Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I don't want to brag, but I've peaked. What? I
- 0:02Speaker 1: have peaked.
- 0:03Speaker 2: In what way?
- 0:04Speaker 1: Because I do a bit of writing for the newspaper
- 0:06Speaker 1: called Sunday Times. Yes, of course.
- 0:08Speaker 2: We read it every week.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We see it.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yes, and online.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And I got a letter from someone, an email from
- 0:12Speaker 1: a lady, and she said she'd put my column on
- 0:16Speaker 1: her fridge. Oh. Oh, that's better than the bottom of
- 0:19Speaker 1: the budgie cage. It was a joy, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Which one?
- 0:26Speaker 1: It was the one– and I wanted to talk about
- 0:29Speaker 1: it with you guys because obviously it's about– it was
- 0:32Speaker 1: about Father's Day. So it's Father's Day on Sunday. Yeah,
- 0:34Speaker 1: it is. Okay. And I thought, you know what? I
- 0:38Speaker 1: did a column about the questions you should ask your
- 0:40Speaker 1: dad before it's too late. Now, G-Man, you just said
- 0:42Speaker 1: your dad's turning 80. Next year, yeah. Get your pen
- 0:45Speaker 1: out because I reckon this is the sort of conversation
- 0:49Speaker 1: you need to have, I don't know, about your situation, Les.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Have you– No, my dad died.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Yeah, mine too.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Bloody cancer.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And that's what drives me. Same with my dad. I
- 1:00Speaker 1: didn't have these conversations. I didn't get to ask these questions.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So I don't want anyone else to miss out. And
- 1:07Speaker 1: if it's hard, just blame Barrow. Just blame me. Just say, Dad,
- 1:10Speaker 1: Barrow said I need to ask you these questions. And
- 1:12Speaker 1: he'll go, what did you listen to him for? That
- 1:14Speaker 1: bloody idiot who wants to support the Dockers. He will say, no,
- 1:19Speaker 1: he might be on the fence with that one. So
- 1:21Speaker 1: start with this one. Dad. what are you most proud
- 1:24Speaker 1: of in your life? Okay, just start with a good opener,
- 1:29Speaker 1: you know, and then to get something out of it
- 1:31Speaker 1: for yourself, say, where were you most proud of me?
- 1:34Speaker 1: Enough about you.
- 1:37Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 1:40Speaker 1: If the answer is not, well, you, then we'll go, well,
- 1:43Speaker 1: what are you most proud of me?
- 1:45Speaker 2: A leading question if ever I heard one.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good, Liz. That's enough about you, Dad. Now
- 1:51Speaker 1: about me. So then dig a little bit deeper. Say,
- 1:54Speaker 1: is there anything you wish you'd done differently in your life?
- 1:58Speaker 1: And what's been the best thing, Dad, about being a dad?
- 2:02Speaker 1: And also what's been the hardest thing, dad? You know, like,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and who's been the biggest influence? Cause then you can
- 2:07Speaker 1: see where his values came from. Yes. Like, would you
- 2:10Speaker 1: know who's your dad's biggest influence? Was it? Oh, probably
- 2:13Speaker 1: his dad. Yeah. Well, that's right. More stories about the
- 2:16Speaker 1: granddad as well. What's something about you? You reckon I
- 2:20Speaker 1: still don't understand dad. You know, what, what's this? What's
- 2:23Speaker 1: this something there that you, you think I've got, I've
- 2:26Speaker 1: got it wrong. You know, what do you really like? And,
- 2:31Speaker 1: Maybe talk about mistakes. What was the biggest mistake you
- 2:33Speaker 1: ever made, Dad? And you hope the answer is not you.
- 2:38Speaker 1: You might get a response that you don't want to hear.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And then finish with a big one. Go, Dad, what's
- 2:45Speaker 1: one story from your life that I've never heard? Because
- 2:49Speaker 1: you forget, Lise, don't you, that your dad had a
- 2:51Speaker 1: whole life before you were around and stuff that he did. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And you never sort of go, because dads are always last,
- 2:57Speaker 1: aren't they? They never get asked. at Christmas or whatever, hey, Dad,
- 3:01Speaker 1: when you were 17, what were you doing? That's never
- 3:03Speaker 1: been asked ever. You know what I mean? Dad, did
- 3:06Speaker 1: you get in trouble with the police when you were
- 3:08Speaker 1: younger or what was the wildest thing you ever did, Dad?
- 3:11Speaker 1: You'll be surprised.
- 3:13Speaker 3: And, you know, what you were saying about don't wait
- 3:15Speaker 3: until it's too late to have that conversation, the thing
- 3:18Speaker 3: about dads of our generation is is they're not notoriously
- 3:22Speaker 3: known for being big speakers about anything, you know, at all, particularly,
- 3:27Speaker 3: and about these things. They don't really talk about these
- 3:30Speaker 3: sort of things. And yet, if you wait until the
- 3:33Speaker 3: very end, all of a sudden they will be forthcoming.
- 3:35Speaker 1: So.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Don't wait. Encourage them to do it now.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So you've been down that track, same as me. I have,
- 3:41Speaker 1: I have, exactly. In the hospital, that's when they start going, blah, blah, blah.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and just, you know, when we knew.
- 3:47Speaker 1: That there wasn't very much. Running out of time, I've
- 3:49Speaker 1: got to tell you this.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Exactly, exactly. There's so many things I wanted to say.
- 3:52Speaker 3: And I was surprised at how, you know, he was–
- 3:56Speaker 3: Open to the discussion and enjoyed hearing the things that,
- 3:59Speaker 3: because all, you know, all your life you think, oh,
- 4:02Speaker 3: dads don't say much, do they?
- 4:03Speaker 1: They're not like moms. That's such a beautiful point. Yeah.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Because he wanted to.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Tell you stuff before he ran out.
- 4:08Speaker 3: So you might be surprised at how, you know, sharing
- 4:11Speaker 3: he is happy to be.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You might have to see a psychologist afterwards. There might
- 4:15Speaker 1: be stuff in there that you've got to deal with
- 4:17Speaker 1: as well.
- 4:18Speaker 3: So go over with a really nice bottle of red.
- 4:21Speaker 1: If I look a little rattled on Monday morning, you'll
- 4:23Speaker 1: know I didn't go well. Can you report back on
- 4:26Speaker 1: exactly what happened?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, happy Father's Day to all the dads on Sunday.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I'm having a DNA test as well. Oh, no. The resemblance. No,
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure we're good there. Like looking in the mirror?
- 4:40Speaker 1: Is that right? That's where my hair went. That's right. Ah,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you're a beauty. No, no need for one of those,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I don't think. That's for sure. Happy Father's Day. Happy
- 4:50Speaker 1: Father's Day. Don't just buy socks and undies. Come on,
- 4:53Speaker 1: have the chat. Have a talk. Blame Barra. Don't worry,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I will be.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Coffee, a beer.
- 4:58Speaker 1: You might be sorry. And ask him something you've never
- 5:01Speaker 1: asked him before. That's a good idea. Yeah, all right.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Good idea. I'll see you Friday. Yeah, we'll catch you Friday. Ooh,
- 5:06Speaker 1: after the big game.
