Transcript
- 0:00Joe: Slimier than blood, too.
- 0:01Joe: So funny.
- 0:02Dylan: Yeah.
- 0:04Dylan: When the vampire blood like sprayed all over them.
- 0:08Dylan: Yeah.
- 0:08SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I was like, Joe, it's shiny.
- 0:12SPEAKER_05: Sparkly.
- 0:58Dylan: Spooky season has officially arrived, and we're starting with vampires, mullets, motorcycles, an unreasonable amount of fog, and possibly the most aggressive saxophone performance ever put on film.
- 1:10Dylan: It's 1987's The Lost Boys.

- 1:32Dylan: So if that's not suitable for little ears, we hope you'll tune in next week.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Santa Carla, the murder capital of the world.
- 1:43Dylan: Alright, Joe.
- 1:44Dylan: So before we jump into the movie, let's talk about how we watched it.
- 1:49Joe: We watched the 4K re-release.
- 1:53Joe: Um it was just uh I think it was a new transfer.
- 1:58Joe: Uh it looks um better than the uh original Blu-ray release.
- 2:04Joe: Yeah.
- 2:05Joe: It looked crispy.
- 2:06Joe: It comes with a blue Blu-ray version as well, but uh there's plenty of special features and stuff.
- 2:13Dylan: So was the initial like release of it like a bad transfer?
- 2:19Joe: Um it was not great because it was early on, you know, when they were doing Blu-rays, and as technology gets better, they sometimes go back and and rescan everything.
- 2:30Joe: And that's fair.
- 2:31Joe: So I think pretty sure it was a rescan.
- 2:34Dylan: Yeah.
- 2:34Dylan: I mean, because all of like the dark scenes and like the you know the nighttime shots, I mean, they looked clean.
- 2:42Dylan: You know how sometimes it kind of gets that like grainy, pixelated effect.
- 2:46Joe: Yeah.
- 2:47Joe: And yeah, it's sometimes those transfers will be so grainy that it's really hard to make stuff out.
- 2:54Joe: But this is really good.
- 2:55Joe: I felt like there was a good balance to it.
- 2:58Dylan: Yeah, it kind of goes the other way with some of it too, though, where you like see it too clearly.
- 3:05Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:06Joe: It's like whoa.
- 3:09Joe: They all get facelifts.
- 3:14Dylan: So when did this movie come out?
- 3:16Joe: 1987.
- 3:19Dylan: Nice.
- 3:20Dylan: I was gonna say, like watching it, you can kind of tell that it's a you know, project of the 80s.
- 3:26Dylan: Yes.
- 3:27Dylan: Oh, very much so.
- 3:28Joe: Very much so.
- 3:31Dylan: When did when did Fright Night come out?
- 3:34Dylan: Just kind of as a time reference.
- 3:36Joe: Time reference.
- 3:38Joe: Um 1985.
- 3:40Joe: Really?
- 3:41Joe: Yeah.
- 3:42Joe: Okay.
- 3:43Joe: I wanted to be sure it's pretty sure it was then, but because I was five when it came out.
- 3:47Joe: So yeah.
- 3:51Dylan: So you were seven when this came out?
- 3:53Joe: Seven or seven or eight, yeah, depending on you know.
- 3:56Dylan: So who directed this one?
- 3:58Joe: Uh Joel Schumacher.
- 4:01Joe: He's best known for Batman, uh, the George Clooney version.
- 4:08Joe: Um, but he's done a lot of other movies, and um he was actually the second uh director.
- 4:16Joe: Um so Richard Donner, who had directed Goonies and Superman, uh, was originally doing this film, but it took so long to develop that he just kind of moved on.
- 4:29Joe: He's he said something to the effect of I had done this movie in my head so much that I was bored.
- 4:35Joe: Oh yeah.
- 4:36Joe: Yeah.
- 4:37Joe: And so his wife suggested Joel Schumacher.
- 4:39Joe: Interesting.
- 4:41Joe: So and Richard Donner ended up executive producing the film.
- 4:45Joe: Okay.
- 4:46Joe: So he still had a hand in it.
- 4:47Joe: Still had a hand in it, right?
- 4:48Joe: Yeah.
- 4:50Joe: Yeah, you don't want to go too far from something you started, you know.
- 4:56Dylan: So set in the fictional Santa Carla, California.
- 5:01Dylan: You ever been there?
- 5:02Joe: Um I've been to Santa Clarita.
- 5:06Joe: Uh I think I've been to Santa Cruz.
- 5:08Joe: I'm pretty sure I have.
- 5:09Joe: I've been up and down the coast.
- 5:11Joe: So yeah.
- 5:12Joe: I just I've never gone to specifically see some of those things.
- 5:18Joe: Um, some of the sets and you know, the the boardwalk and all that that's still out there.
- 5:23Joe: And apparently it is known as the murder capital of the world.
- 5:28Joe: So I don't think that was painted on the side.
- 5:31Joe: There's like three murderers or something in that area.
- 5:34Dylan: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:35Joe: Wow.
- 5:35Dylan: I thought, yeah.
- 5:37Dylan: And that makes it the murder capital?
- 5:39Joe: Well, having three murderers in there with all the yeah.
- 5:42Joe: See, guess they've never been to New York.
- 5:45Joe: Yeah, if you if you were to stand up all the bodies uh in in from end to end.
- 5:50Joe: Yeah, from end to end, you would have a population problem.
- 5:57Joe: Already talking through our favorite lines.
- 6:01Dylan: Yeah.
- 6:03Dylan: How they wrapped it so nicely, how they had it like the horror and spooky, but then still threw in the um like the comedy and the like kind of just the the family dynamic of it.
- 6:18Joe: Yeah.
- 6:19Joe: When uh it was in development, the other producers and you know, movie people who wanted to know where their money was going, yeah, would say, you know, what so what kind of movie is this?
- 6:30Joe: Is it comedy?
- 6:31Joe: Is it a horror movie?
- 6:32Joe: And he would just say, Yes.
- 6:34Joe: Yes.
- 6:37Joe: Which is one of the best answers you can give to people who are worried about their money.
- 6:43Joe: So uh before watching this, um when you pictured a vampire movie, what what did you picture?
- 6:51Dylan: You know, I feel like it's kind of that whole cliche of like the the old, you know, kind of crusty vampire.
- 7:00Dylan: Yeah, that's like always where my head goes, right?
- 7:04Dylan: You know, like Dracula vibes.
- 7:06Dylan: Uh-huh.
- 7:06Dylan: Yeah.
- 7:06Dylan: So like having them be like younger and like kind of the band of misfits.
- 7:14Dylan: Uh-huh.
- 7:14Dylan: Right.
- 7:14Dylan: Yeah.
- 7:15Dylan: It was definitely a fun take on it.
- 7:17Dylan: Yeah.
- 7:18Dylan: So, and then obviously, you know, sparkling twilight vampires.
- 7:22Dylan: Right.
- 7:23Dylan: Yeah.
- 7:23Dylan: Yeah.
- 7:24Joe: You got all the variations of vampires that have come out.
- 7:30Dylan: I mean, I I did ask before we watched it this um this evening.
- 7:34Dylan: I said, Joe, so would you say it's more like Twilight Vampires or more Fright Night Vampires?
- 7:40Joe: Yeah.
- 7:41Joe: And I said, I think it's in the middle.
- 7:44Joe: Yeah.
- 7:45Joe: If you haven't seen it, here's the quick setup.
- 7:49Joe: After their parents divorce, brothers Michael and Sam move with their mother to the California beach town of Santa Carla.
- 7:57Joe: Michael soon falls in with a mysterious group of motorcycle riding teenagers led by the charismatic David.
- 8:05Joe: Well, Sam befriends two self-proclaimed vampire hunters who insist something supernatural is happening in town.
- 8:12Joe: And as Michael gets pulled deeper into Santa Carla's nightlife, the brothers discover there may be a very good reason the town is known as the murder capital of the world.
- 8:25Dylan: It gets pulled deeper to the nightlife.
- 8:27Dylan: I like what you did there.
- 8:28Dylan: Yes.
- 8:30Dylan: So you were like seven to eight when this movie came out.
- 8:35Joe: Uh-huh.
- 8:35Dylan: So what was your first time watching this movie like?
- 8:39Joe: Well, the funny thing is there's a couple of movies I experienced this way, but we had a neighbor upstairs.
- 8:46Joe: Uh, there was a family, and they had cable.
- 8:49Joe: So uh every once in a while they would invite us up to go and watch whatever movies that we're playing on HBO or something.
- 8:56Joe: So I think I came part way through into the movie and saw it for the first time, but then me and my brother were able to get a copy from my dad who had HBO.
- 9:06Joe: Okay.
- 9:06Joe: And then we'd watch it on our own.
- 9:09Joe: And we we loved rewinding scenes and watching.
- 9:13Joe: Yeah.
- 9:14Dylan: One thing with this movie though is I I really did like how like 80s it felt.
- 9:20Dylan: Yeah.
- 9:21Dylan: Especially like with the mullets.
- 9:23Dylan: I know I pointed that out to you like while we were watching it.
- 9:25Dylan: Uh-huh.
- 9:27Dylan: The hair sells it.
- 9:28Joe: Right.
- 9:29Joe: It totally does.
- 9:31Dylan: I definitely would not call it like a scary movie, but it was definitely like a good campy vampire.
- 9:38Dylan: Yeah.
- 9:38Joe: Yeah.
- 9:40Joe: Definitely was.
- 9:41Joe: The original idea of it was supposed to be more along the lines of Goonies.
- 9:47Joe: Yeah.
- 9:47Joe: And uh Corey Feldman had already been talking to Richard Donner about coming, you know, and doing this movie.
- 9:54Joe: Oh, yeah.
- 9:55Joe: He had already done Goonies with Richard Donner, so it was gonna be, you know.
- 10:00Joe: Uh, and so once Joel Schumacher kind of got a hold of it, he wanted it to be more, you know, older older kids, and he said he wanted to make them older and sexy.
- 10:12Joe: Yeah.
- 10:13Joe: And uh he wanted, but he wanted to keep the basic rules of a vampire movie.
- 10:18Dylan: Yeah.
- 10:18Dylan: So what would you say the basic rules of a vampire movie is?
- 10:23Joe: Yeah, I think I you know, from what they kept is you know, being in the dark, the whole, you know, drinking blood and then having to do a kill.
- 10:33Joe: Uh those are kind of you know staples in the vampire world.
- 10:38Joe: Yeah.
- 10:40Joe: Um, and it didn't really matter like who bit whose neck.
- 10:45Joe: It was like it was just kind of whatever, you know, whatever you did.
- 10:49Joe: Right.
- 10:49Joe: And in this one, it it's kind of different too, because you're drinking the blood and then you're doing a kill, and then uh other movies are you get bit on the neck, and then all of a sudden that's right, that's what triggers it.
- 11:01Joe: Yeah, and then you have the need to feed.
- 11:05Joe: So um typical, like they talk about the the rules of uh killing a vampire, uh steak in the heart, um holy water, garlic, the essentials, the basics.
- 11:19Joe: Right.
- 11:21Dylan: Yeah, I like how they um kind of played with the reflections throughout the two.
- 11:28Dylan: Yeah.
- 11:29Dylan: And, you know, showed Mikey what's the name?
- 11:33Dylan: Michael.
- 11:34Dylan: Michael, eyes close, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:38Dylan: Um you know, showed Michael like half trans translucent.
- 11:44Dylan: Uh-huh.
- 11:44Joe: Transparent.
- 11:45Joe: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:45Joe: Translucent.
- 11:46Joe: Trans something, yeah.
- 11:47Joe: Right in there.
- 11:48Joe: But not Transylvania.
- 11:53Joe: But yeah, we're we we're not doing Rocky Horror this season.
- 11:58Joe: We should have.
- 11:58Joe: Tim Curry just passed.
- 12:00Joe: I know.
- 12:01Joe: All right, we're taking it.
- 12:04Joe: Wind it back.
- 12:05SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 12:09Dylan: So would you say that uh the Lost Boys help make vampires cool?
- 12:16Joe: Oh, definitely.
- 12:17Joe: Um, I think that you know, one of the big things takeaways for me is not just like the youngness, but there's some I hate the word trope, because it's not really that.
- 12:31Joe: It's just more of the teen elements of a movie.
- 12:36Joe: And you know, changing things up so it's more modern, yeah, but it's still the vampire lore.
- 12:44Joe: And like um, the kind of idea of you're a teenager and you're gonna party all night and sleep all day.
- 12:52Joe: Right.
- 12:52Joe: Well, that's like eternity for them.
- 12:54Joe: That's like their life, you know.
- 12:56Joe: It's kind of like a rock star life, and and that's kind of what he wanted is to show that those classic teen moments kind of thing.
- 13:04Joe: Yeah.
- 13:04Joe: Um, I really felt like, you know, jump kind of jumping ahead into scenes, but that that whole um arc of Michael um meeting those guys and then getting kind of wrapped in all this stuff.
- 13:20Joe: Um, like they're so they're you know, riding through the beach and they're racing each other, and that reminded me of the Chicky Run and Rebel, you know, and it was really like the whole rebel setup of star being kind of the Natalie Wood and the rest of the guys pushing him into it, but instead of the guy dying, they're already dead, yeah.
- 13:48Joe: So, you know, and then there's just the typical like um peer pressure stuff, you know, like it goes from they're they're teasing him with the with the worms and the um maggots, yeah.
- 14:02Joe: And uh, and then the whole teen pressure of come on, you want to drink it, you know, and the stars like, no, don't do it, right?
- 14:10Joe: Right.
- 14:11Joe: So it makes it like this, you know, don't drink, you know, kind of thing, but it's really like dire, you know, this dire situation.
- 14:20Joe: But yeah, so they they include those elements of of like a modern take of how would uh a youth in this culture deal with being a vampire?
- 14:33Joe: Yeah, you know, uh the other part where he talks to his mom, and she's like, he's like, you know, I'm dealing with more important things that you wouldn't understand, and she finishes his sentence, and it's the typical mom son, yeah, you know, but it's like, no, you don't understand, right?
- 14:54Dylan: Yeah, they hit the cliche like right on the nose on that one.
- 14:57Dylan: Yeah, you're like, actually, you don't understand.
- 15:00Dylan: No, not even close.
- 15:02Dylan: Yeah, grandpa might.
- 15:06Dylan: Yeah.
- 15:07Dylan: Grandpa's leading a thing or two.
- 15:09Dylan: Yeah, apparently.
- 15:11Dylan: That was that was the best twist, like at the end.
- 15:14Dylan: Yeah.
- 15:15Dylan: Grandpa's just the root beer.
- 15:17Dylan: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:18Dylan: He goes and drinks the root beer.
- 15:20Dylan: What does he say?
- 15:22Dylan: All the damn vampires.
- 15:24Joe: Yeah, he's like, that's the one thing I I always hated about Santa Carlos all the dang vampires.
- 15:30Joe: And their face is just like, what?
- 15:33Joe: Yeah.
- 15:34Dylan: You knew.
- 15:35Joe: Yeah.
- 15:39Dylan: All right.
- 15:40Dylan: I think we should talk characters.
- 15:42Dylan: Okay.
- 15:43Dylan: So you have Michael played by Jason Patrick.
- 15:49Dylan: Jason Patrick.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: Older brother.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:53Joe: Yeah.
- 15:53Joe: He was um yeah, he was a good choice.
- 15:56Joe: He was the first choice.
- 15:58Joe: Was he?
- 15:58Joe: Yeah, he was awesome.
- 16:00Joe: Joel Schumacher had seen him in another movie and was just like, yeah, I I gotta get him.
- 16:05Joe: So he was he was the first choice, but the hardest one to to join it, because he didn't want to like in the 80s, there was a lot more like horror genre teen movies were campy and B movie and straight to video type of stuff.
- 16:24Joe: But they had the names for this movie, you know, Warner Brothers, Richard Donner, Joel Schumacher, and so you know, he didn't want to do prosthetics and makeup and and all this stuff, and they promised him he wouldn't, and then they lied.
- 16:41Joe: But that's what kept them from doing it, is just he didn't want to be part of like a you know horror, you know, vampire exploitation kind of thing, you know.
- 16:52Dylan: But I did think like with the prosthetics that he did have on, like I thought it really worked though.
- 17:01Dylan: Yeah.
- 17:02Dylan: Like it really um enhanced the scene for kind of a lack of better term with that.
- 17:08Joe: Right.
- 17:09Joe: Yeah, and uh I think that the cool way they did it was that Jason Patrick had so much resistance to it, and Michael had so much resistance to becoming a vampire that when he finally gets ticked off enough, he gets into you know murder mode.
- 17:29Joe: But yeah, it was subtle, it wasn't like a super aggressive um you know makeup, and he wanted that.
- 17:38Joe: Um Joel Schumacher wanted them to still look attractive in the makeup as opposed to you know gory or you know, yeah.
- 17:50Dylan: Did a good job with that.
- 17:52Dylan: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:54Dylan: Yep.
- 17:55Joe: I mean thing about Jason Patrick is that that chiseled jaw.
- 18:01Joe: Oh, no joke.
- 18:02Dylan: Well, and I I had to laugh because um, you know, at the beginning he's like clean shaven.
- 18:09Dylan: Yeah, and then once he drinks the blood and wakes up the next morning, then he's got like the the five o'clock.
- 18:14Dylan: Five o'clock shadow.
- 18:16Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:17Joe: And it's just like, yeah, the one thing uh about him that he's just a great actor.
- 18:24SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 18:24Joe: Um my two favorite other movies from him are uh called Narc and Rush.
- 18:30Joe: Okay.
- 18:30Joe: Uh, and in both of them he plays like a uh you know detective, basically.
- 18:35Joe: But um he was up later on for the role of Jim Morrison in the Doors movie, and there's actually the scene where they're in the cave, there's a doors poster in the back, and this is all that yeah, and so then like his his face kind of goes across together and they look exactly alike, you know, like his hair and everything.
- 18:58Joe: It's like why didn't they just choose him?
- 19:00Joe: I mean, Valcomer is amazing, I'll say that.
- 19:03Joe: Yeah, but yeah.
- 19:06Joe: So that's all I gotta say about that.
- 19:13Dylan: So next we have uh Sam played by Corey Haim.
- 19:19Dylan: Corey Haim, yeah.
- 19:22Joe: So Corey Haim had done some previous movies, um, and and Joel Schumacher thought that he would be great, so he had him in.
- 19:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 19:35Joe: And he basically said, called him Sam, and he was like, Oh, that's the that's the you know, character's name.
- 19:41Joe: He's like, Oh, I got the part.
- 19:44Joe: He's like, Yeah, he got the part.
- 19:46Joe: So the cool thing is that Corey Heyman and um Jason Patrick hung out a lot so that they could really be like brothers.
- 19:56Joe: Yeah.
- 19:56Joe: So Jason Patrick being older would take them places and they'd go hang out and do stuff together, you know.
- 20:03Joe: So they like formed a camaraderie.
- 20:06Joe: Yeah.
- 20:07Joe: The bond.
- 20:08Joe: Yes.
- 20:11Joe: And then I'll jump ahead.
- 20:15Joe: Uh the Frog Brothers, um, Corey Feldman and uh uh Jason Newlander, Corey Feldman, and Corey Haim would go on to to do multiple movies together.
- 20:30Joe: Yeah, and this was the first start of like the Corey films.
- 20:34Joe: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 20:36Joe: So yeah, then David is played by Kiefer Sutherland, which if you if you notice, there's two actors from Stand By Me in this, yeah.
- 20:50Joe: And both uh, you know, basically Kiefer Sutherland is the villain again, you know.
- 21:00Joe: So yeah, which is pretty cool.
- 21:02Joe: I'd like to think that the character from Stand By Me became a vampire.
- 21:09Joe: Funny.
- 21:10Joe: I'm just gonna throw out the theory.
- 21:12Joe: The timeline fits.
- 21:15Dylan: We're starting this rumor here and now.
- 21:17Dylan: Yes.
- 21:19Joe: Well talk amongst yourselves.
- 21:23Dylan: And I don't know if it's because we had kind of just watched Young Guns, uh-huh, you know, a month ago now.
- 21:31Dylan: But like, you know, when you first came up on screen, I was like instantly recognizable, you know?
- 21:37Dylan: Yeah.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Doc.
- 21:40Dylan: The other doc.
- 21:41Dylan: What have they done to you?
- 21:43Dylan: Yeah, I know.
- 21:44Joe: They gave you a mullet.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: You pulled it off.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:53Joe: Some some crazy contact lenses.
- 21:56Joe: Yeah.
- 21:56Joe: Oh yeah.
- 21:57Joe: Oh.
- 21:58Joe: They were glass back then.
- 22:00Joe: Too yeah, so I think the teardrops were real.
- 22:05Dylan: Yeah, I bet.
- 22:07Joe: But yeah, he was uh he was seen in a movie called That Close Range, and he was just like kind of a side part in that movie.
- 22:18Joe: Um, so it was like stand by me at close range little part, and then Joel Schumacher saw that and then cast him in this movie.
- 22:26Joe: Yeah, and because of the way he looked in that movie, and um they had him in and you know they gave him the part it was pretty fast.
- 22:36Joe: Yeah, I mean he has such a just he has very few lines.
- 22:41Dylan: His screen presence though, yes, it carries it so well, right?
- 22:46Joe: Yeah, yeah, he does.
- 22:48Joe: It's it's you know, of the three movies that we've done, I think this is the better part, you know.
- 22:56Joe: It just he takes that menacingness uh from stand by me and just like pumps it up to ten or eleven, you know.
- 23:06Dylan: Like going back to um Corey Feldman, what else have we watched that he's in?
- 23:14Joe: Uh Corey Feldman was in Goonies.
- 23:16Joe: Okay.
- 23:16Joe: And he was in Standby Me.
- 23:18Joe: Okay.
- 23:18Joe: The kid with the glasses, the dressed like a military kid.
- 23:23Joe: Yeah.
- 23:24Joe: Um, so he was mouth in Goonies, uh wore the gray um jacket.
- 23:31Joe: He talks the maid into yeah.
- 23:34Joe: Yup.
- 23:37Dylan: His did they like have him put on some kind of like a voice for this?
- 23:45Dylan: Because when he starts speaking, I was like, Yeah.
- 23:49Dylan: What is he doing?
- 23:52Joe: So when they were both cast, um he they were told, you know, you guys are gonna play this serious.
- 24:02Joe: And to Joel Schumacher, them playing playing it over the top and serious would be part of the comedy in it.
- 24:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 24:10Joe: And which it was so he told them to go out and rent like um Chuck Norris movies and uh, you know, Rambo and Stallone movies and Schwarzenegger movies, and they're like, You're this, you you guys are these characters, like stay within that.
- 24:27Joe: And everything you see about vampires and all that, you're serious about, and and so then the rest kind of just follows in with it.
- 24:35Joe: Yeah, so that's why they're automatically have the bandanas and like all these little parts from those movies, you know, and then they're speaking in a low tone tone because they're serious.
- 24:47Dylan: That was very funny, yeah.
- 24:52Dylan: So you also have Star, uh played by Jamie Gertz.
- 24:58Joe: Yep, mm-hmm.
- 24:59Joe: Yeah, she's been in a lot of different movies.
- 25:02Joe: Um yeah, she was basically Jason Patrick had already had the part, and the part of Starr was supposed to be this kind of blonde pixie girl, and that's all uh Joel Schumacher would look for.
- 25:17Joe: Yeah, and Jason Patrick had done a movie with her in a play, and so he suggested, well, why don't you give her a shot?
- 25:24Joe: You know, and and he was kind of like hesitant.
- 25:27Joe: Joel Schumacher was hesitant because he he had something in his head, and once he met her and and saw her act, it was like, okay, yeah, she could take the part, and yeah, they changed the character a little bit for her, you know.
- 25:40Dylan: So yeah, because I I like that she kind of had the you know gypsy kind of feel to her.
- 25:50Joe: Yeah, yeah, she does.
- 25:51Joe: Little flower child, right?
- 25:53Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:54Joe: It's it's funny because like you don't know what time frame they're from, you know.
- 26:00Joe: Yeah, and I almost get 60s from her because of the name.
- 26:04Joe: Yeah, I can see that.
- 26:08Dylan: So, okay, what was up with uh Laddie?
- 26:13Dylan: So um as far as I just felt like it was like kind of off the wall, yeah.
- 26:23Dylan: Having essentially a little kid running around.
- 26:28Joe: Yeah.
- 26:28Joe: Yeah.
- 26:29Joe: Yeah.
- 26:31Joe: In other movies, that's frowned upon um to do that to a kid.
- 26:39Joe: Um and specifically in uh interview with the vampire, uh, that it's it's frowned upon by other vampires to do that.
- 26:48Joe: Okay.
- 26:49Joe: So I don't know, I don't really know, like I know that there is definitely a line of missing kids, and that's kind of a underlying theme.
- 27:01Joe: Yeah, kind of see that.
- 27:02Joe: And his is actually you know revealed on the milk carton, the classic.
- 27:08Joe: Yeah, but I didn't get to see the dates.
- 27:12Joe: I was gonna rewind it and see, but I forget.
- 27:15Joe: I know the I think the birth date was 70, but I can't remember, you know, what when he went missing.
- 27:23Joe: Yeah.
- 27:24Joe: But um, yeah, he was an interesting character because he had obviously turned, so he had obviously killed.
- 27:34SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 27:34Joe: And so it's like, whoa, like because she talks about how it was so hard for her to resist for so long, but you have a kid in that situation, it's probably not gonna take them very long.
- 27:47Joe: Right.
- 27:47Joe: You know, it's like kid in the you know, cookie jar type of thing, you know.
- 27:53Dylan: Yeah, when you have like zero impulse control.
- 27:58Joe: Right, yeah.
- 27:59Joe: Yeah, you're in the time of your life when you're learning that, and then all of a sudden it's amped up, you know.
- 28:07Dylan: So yeah.
- 28:09Dylan: So then you have Lucy, who's the mom, yeah, played by Diana Weist.
- 28:16Joe: Diane Diane Weist.
- 28:18Joe: Diane Diane Weist?
- 28:20Joe: Yeah.
- 28:21Joe: She had um she had actually while they were filming, got an Oscar.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: Oh really?
- 28:29Joe: Yeah, her previous movie was up, and then she got an Oscar.
- 28:34Joe: So yeah, it's like if that would have happened, I would have gone back to the table and been like, oh, let's renegotiate.
- 28:42Joe: Right.
- 28:43Joe: But they said that she was so nice that she was really similar to the character of the mom that she was just like, you know, it is what it is.
- 28:53Dylan: Yeah, you know.
- 28:56Dylan: So who who was the lead vampire?
- 29:05Joe: That was Edward Herman.
- 29:08Joe: Edward Herman.
- 29:10Joe: Do you know U Cinnamon?
- 29:14Dylan: Oh, I don't like this game.
- 29:15Dylan: Yeah.
- 29:17Dylan: You never do.
- 29:20Dylan: Um not ringing a bell.
- 29:24Joe: Have you watched Gilmore Girls very much?
- 29:27Dylan: I've never seen that.
- 29:28Joe: Okay.
- 29:28Joe: We'll have to watch that next.
- 29:30Joe: All of it.
- 29:31Joe: The whole series.
- 29:32Joe: Yes.
- 29:32Joe: Because once you start, you can't stop.
- 29:35Joe: Um Annie.
- 29:38Joe: And the president in Annie.
- 29:40Joe: Oh, okay.
- 29:42Joe: Yeah.
- 29:42Joe: Which, you know, for me being an Annie fan and then seeing this movie, I'm like, what?
- 29:50Dylan: Well, can I say he's timeless?
- 29:52Dylan: Yeah.
- 29:54Dylan: Oh what?
- 29:58Dylan: Yeah, he is.
- 29:59Dylan: Yeah, the I loved how they had like the um, you know, how they suspected him of being a vampire, yeah, and had all of like the classic tropes along with it.
- 30:13Dylan: Yes.
- 30:13Dylan: And then like you, the audience, like totally seeing all of the signs with it.
- 30:20Dylan: Yeah.
- 30:21Dylan: And then you're like, it's just crashing and burning.
- 30:25Dylan: Right.
- 30:25Dylan: So then it's just like he's sabotaging his mom's date.
- 30:28Joe: Yeah.
- 30:29Joe: Yeah.
- 30:29Joe: Yeah.
- 30:30Joe: It makes it so, you know.
- 30:32Joe: Um, Joel Schumacher said he wanted a combination of whimsy and serious.
- 30:37Joe: Yeah.
- 30:37Joe: And he wanted somebody who would be able to be so kind of ambiguous that he could uh trick the audience with.
- 30:47Joe: Yeah.
- 30:50Joe: Yeah.
- 30:51Joe: He uh Ed Herman said that he never thought that he'd ever be in a character where he was more like, you know, sexy and and fashionable.
- 31:00Joe: Yeah because he's used to playing the president and used to playing being in suits, yeah.
- 31:06Joe: And all that kind of upper, you know, echelon where he's more a driver corvette and he, you know, fashionable and all that kind of stuff.
- 31:17Dylan: Um I loved later on when they're like, but how did you know Netavar's stuff get you?
- 31:25Dylan: He's like, You invited me in.
- 31:27Dylan: Yeah.
- 31:28Dylan: Yeah.
- 31:30Joe: Yeah.
- 31:30Joe: How does he say it?
- 31:31Joe: He's like, he's like, everybody knows that you don't invite a vampire into your house or something like that.
- 31:40SPEAKER_09: Don't ever invite a vampire into your house, you silly boy.
- 31:43SPEAKER_09: It renders you powerless.
- 31:45Joe: He's like, what?
- 31:46Joe: And then he's like, yeah, yeah.
- 31:48Joe: And uh Frog Brothers are like, yeah, you know, duh.
- 31:52Dylan: Yeah.
- 31:55Dylan: And I think to top it all off, we have grandpa.
- 31:59Dylan: Yes.
- 32:02Dylan: Played by Bernard Hughes.
- 32:04Dylan: Bernard Hughes.
- 32:06Dylan: Main character syndrome right there.
- 32:07Dylan: Exactly.
- 32:08Dylan: He just steals the story.
- 32:11Joe: I mean, he he I mean, of all the people in the film, is he not the hero?
- 32:17Dylan: He is definitely the hero.
- 32:19Dylan: Yeah.
- 32:20Dylan: To his family and the widow done.
- 32:27Joe: Yeah, and not to any of the animals that he he harmed in the filming of the movie.
- 32:34Joe: Yeah, the biggest movies he was in is uh Sister Act to Tron and The Lost Boys.
- 32:43Joe: Yeah, I think I do remember him in Tron now that I think about it.
- 32:46Dylan: Oh, yeah.
- 32:48Dylan: Man, the fact that he just comes crashing through the door at the end, though.
- 32:52Dylan: Yeah is just perfect.
- 32:54Joe: Oh man, yeah, it it uh yeah, it's just so classic.
- 33:00Joe: I mean, because the thing is, is there's subtle hints when you look back, and when he comes when uh you know Ed Herman comes over to the house, he's a little like skeptical, and then you start to see him putting something together in the background, and then that becomes the device that he comes up with.
- 33:24Joe: Oh, really?
- 33:26Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:28Joe: Yeah, he he's like there's a scene where they show him working on stuff, and and you don't know what he's working on.
- 33:35Dylan: Yeah.
- 33:36Dylan: You just try not to look at it in case it's fluffy from down the road.
- 33:40Dylan: Right, yeah, exactly.
- 33:42Dylan: The widow Johnson's dog.
- 33:45Dylan: I think the music in this just might make it your episode.
- 33:49Dylan: It's so 80s.
- 33:51Joe: I mean, do we have to talk about that?
- 33:53Dylan: I mean, well, you don't have to.
- 33:56Joe: Just kidding.
- 33:57Joe: You know, I'm just kidding.
- 34:00Joe: It's 80s in a good way to me.
- 34:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 34:03Joe: Yeah I think the biggest, you know, song that everybody loves is Cry Little Sister.
- 34:11Joe: And I think the use of it is just such an it's in that transition period where Michael's, you know, like with Star and everything, and he's going through all the changes.
- 34:24Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:24Joe: It's just the whole Dal Shout thing.
- 34:27Joe: And um, so I think that's most people's favorite.
- 34:32Joe: Um, and uh the writer uh Gerard McMahon uh wrote um any relation.
- 34:47Joe: So he wrote the theme song after reading the script, but had having not seen the film yet.
- 34:53Dylan: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 34:55Dylan: Wow, I'd never understood how they could do that.
- 34:57Joe: Yeah, because it just like lines up perfectly with the right, yeah, and your imagination kind of takes over, and then you know, with the scripts, there's scenes in there that weren't used or you know, uh deleted scenes, yeah, you know, and so that influences your writing as well, yeah.
- 35:17Joe: So um cool thing is the song that kind of begins and ends the you know, there's a couple of oldies that they're tuning through.
- 35:30Joe: Um so uh uh uh Joel Schumacher thought that these these particular vampires would be fans of the doors, uh, because of like the imagery that they use in in their music and uh kind of about death and different things like that.
- 35:50Joe: Um so he thought, all right, I'm gonna I'm gonna try to get the song, and that kind of turned into getting the Echo and the Bunnymen to uh record it.
- 36:03Joe: And when they went to ask permission from the Doors, uh the keyboardist Rayman Zarek actually volunteered to produce and play on the track.
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 36:14Joe: Yeah, so an original Doors member is playing on that track, which makes it so cool because you listen to the you know keyboard parts and and you're like, oh yeah, that's totally um, and then there are about three in excess songs on there, and they just pretty much just gave them the songs and said, you know, just take these songs to use in the movie.
- 36:45Joe: Yeah.
- 36:46Joe: And he was so like just you know thankful for that that he kept telling them, you know, there's one day I'm gonna one day I'm gonna do you a favor.
- 36:59Joe: But he's like, I'm gonna, I you know, I gotta give this favor back somehow.
- 37:03Joe: And so when they did their second album or you know, next album following, uh, there's a song called Devil Inside, and he directed it for free.
- 37:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 37:14Joe: So like to have like, you know, imagine your music video being, you know, directed by Martin Scorsese or Francis For Coppola.
- 37:26Joe: Right.
- 37:26Joe: They got Joel Schumacher, that's pretty cool, you know.
- 37:30Joe: Um so the big the big uh song uh when the you know they go to the boardwalk.
- 37:42Joe: Uh I still believe it's a lesser known song, and I'm not sure what how Lost Boys fans kind of rate it.
- 37:50Joe: Okay.
- 37:51Joe: I feel like it's the un one of the underdogs.
- 37:53Joe: I'll talk a couple about a couple of those, but you know, it really stands out because that saxophone is it's just oiled shirtless and oiled up.
- 38:03Dylan: Yeah that stands out.
- 38:05Joe: Right, it does.
- 38:07Joe: You cannot forget that.
- 38:11Joe: Um, yeah, playing saxophone and everything.
- 38:13Joe: And he was actually a touring uh um studio musician with Tina Turner.
- 38:20Joe: Oh, yeah.
- 38:21Joe: And I guess apparently there's a concert that they had recorded before this movie that he's like basically looks exactly the same with the no shirt and everything.
- 38:31Joe: Nice.
- 38:31Joe: Yeah.
- 38:32Joe: I think the last time I I found a YouTube video of of interviews with them.
- 38:38Joe: He was there, but he was wearing a tank top.
- 38:44Dylan: That video would have gotten way more views if yeah, exactly.
- 38:50Joe: People just don't know how to market these things, right?
- 38:53Dylan: Honestly, though.
- 38:54Joe: Yeah, one of my favorite uh songs is um The Lost Boys song.
- 39:03Joe: And um yeah, so the song The Lost Boys Lost in the Shadows um is by Lou Graham, and uh it's just it's one of the first I think it's a song that plays when they're doing the bike race or whatever, yeah.
- 39:21Joe: And it's the whole like it it to me, it has so much energy, and there's such a like kind of a footloose vibe to the song, like the the drums and stuff like that.
- 39:32Joe: Okay, but Lou Graham, um a I believe he was the lead singer of Foreigner, and so like I mean, just he's done so many songs, but he does this solo song, and it just to me it's kind of I asked my brother what his favorite song was on the soundtrack, and he said this was it, and I totally agree.
- 39:56Joe: I think it's not as well known as people it you know make it out to be.
- 40:01Joe: Yeah, because I think everybody kind of you know Cry a Little Sister is a good song, but I really feel like this gives it energy.
- 40:10Joe: Um then the last song that like want to mention is um Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by Roger Daltrey.
- 40:22Joe: Um it's originally an Elton John song, and Elton John singing it, you get that you know kind of you know lost uh loved one or kind of lost my the person I love kind of vibe.
- 40:40Joe: And then this in the vampire context, it just has a different feel, yeah, you know, and it's in the credits at the end.
- 40:48Joe: And um when I was kind of watching it initially before this, it just wow, it just has a different vibe to me.
- 40:58Joe: Don't you know, because the lyrics in it and and everything of don't let the sun go down?
- 41:03Joe: I mean, it's like you know, very vampire-ish.
- 41:06Dylan: Yeah, almost more about kind of losing yourself in that versus your loved one, yeah, right.
- 41:14unknown: Yeah.
- 41:15Dylan: So would you say that the Lost Boys work nearly as well without a soundtrack of this caliber?
- 41:24Joe: I don't know.
- 41:25Joe: I mean, it'd be interesting to see a pure just soundtrack with it.
- 41:30SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 41:30Joe: To see how, but I think yeah, you gotta kind of play to the culture and the teens and what's going on.
- 41:39Joe: And yeah, I mean, in excess and um, you know, Echo and the Bunnymen were some of the top artists at the time, and you know, we're probably Warner Brothers artists and why they got picks, but um The Who and Roger Daltrey were making a comeback at the time.
- 41:56Joe: The whom.
- 42:00Joe: Um so yeah, I think I think I don't think that soundtrack alone would, you know, really carry it.
- 42:10Joe: Yeah, you know, with trying to have that vibe, you know.
- 42:13Joe: I mean, Young Guns could have been but uh yeah, and there's some there's definitely some scenes where there's some callback to that old horror uh organ sounds.
- 42:33Dylan: Yep, there was a few times where that came came through.
- 42:36Joe: Yeah, yeah, and you're like, oh, we're watching a vampire movie.
- 42:44Dylan: Ooh, uh right, Joe.
- 42:48Dylan: So let's talk about Santa Carla.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 42:55Dylan: Schumacher like just created like such a distinctive place.
- 43:03Joe: Yeah.
- 43:05Joe: Yeah, like the what was it?
- 43:11Joe: He was trying to find a different way to come up with showing the typical vampire going to sleep.
- 43:21Joe: And with being in California and having Santa Carla as the back or Santa Cruz as the backdrop, um, he decided to do this hotel that had sunk into the ground.
- 43:33Joe: Yeah.
- 43:34Joe: And and thus, as one of the frog brothers said, it's its own giant coffin.
- 43:41Joe: Yeah.
- 43:43Joe: So that I think to me that was that was like a a great choice to to kind of think that far in putting history into this non existent town.
- 43:55Joe: Yeah.
- 43:57Joe: Um and uh yeah.
- 44:00Joe: I mean they took advantage of everything that was there anyway, you know, video stores and um you know comic book stores and you know all that kind of stuff.
- 44:08Joe: Yeah um yeah I've seen people go go back there and go on like the monorail thing and oh yeah yeah but the like the bridge is actually like I want to say like it's only ten feet off the ground in reality or something.
- 44:27Joe: Oh yeah like you can actually jump off of it and it's it I think it's in action it's from what I remember I think it's actually in Santa Clorita which way near I went when I went to college um so I'd love to go back and find it but yeah it's just it's just this tiny almost a footbridge funny yeah hey it's all about the framing right it is it is and they used you know they used uh that footbridge as well as a studio you know made up which were so that when they dropped they actually look like they were going into ether right into the fog into the fog yeah and then you have like the punk culture and apparently the like there was more of a story with the punks that they they you know ate or whatever yeah they took Michael to and uh they they were actually like punk surf German bad guys oh okay yeah because I saw in the credits uh that it you know it said what was it like punk German bad guys yeah and I was like I was like what yeah yeah did I miss part of this yeah so it was more like yeah they were they were doing wrong by killing them but it was almost kind of a righteous kill like that's some integrity in there killing of course they're they're vampires they're not monsters right their makeup that's so interesting though yeah I liked how they had like the missing persons posters everywhere you know we kind of talked about that a little at the top of the episode but like how they had it like everywhere and they just had them like layered yeah you know like it had been going on for a long time right and and really one of the ideas in there when he when he came on board was kind of what if Peter Pan were actually a vampire you know and he was taking all these kids to Neverland type of thing parents would notice you know right and and in the modern age parents would you know put up signs and say my kid's gone and so like some of these kids were probably had become vampires and not just you know killed off but yeah yeah and so it's kind of a whole like why it's called the Lost Boys is because it's this you know kind of underarching idea of you know David's essentially Peter Pan.
- 47:20Dylan: Let's not go that far yeah just all of the world building that went into it I it really just makes you feel like kind of the you know Santa Carla itself is kind of its own character in a sense.
- 47:43Joe: Yeah yeah it's you know you kind of they kind of show all the like different kind of freaks in the you know town and and all the different personalities and all the different things going on and you know all the layers all the layers yeah yeah and they build it so fast too because they just come right in and yeah and I feel like that the People are strange cover really contributes to that.
- 48:12Joe: Yeah this is your acceptance of that yeah yeah so could you pick out some favorite scenes oh man the whole like you're a mm-sucking vampire just wait till I tell mom it's it's so little brother like it's so like the there they just put them these kids and they the mom and everything into these family scenarios to where like you react naturally to what the situation you'd be in you know because initially he's all mad I'm gonna tell mom and then later on he's like you know I I won't tell mom yeah right mom appears and you're like never mind yeah yeah um I liked the motorcycle ride yeah the chicken yeah exactly is because like it's so reminiscent of that you know about how like he doesn't throw himself off the end but he gets darn close yeah they uh so like another one my my me and my brother would rewind this over and over but when um uh Sam you know is with Michael and he's kind of looking around for the other vampire and then he gets you know picked up into the air and you know sprays them and they go down and uh he shoots an arrow and me and my brother would always say you miss sucker and we would rewind it and just laugh because it's just like it's such a great part and then you know that goes into you know hit at him actually hitting the arrow and then there was a deleted scene where he's playing with the stereo and realizes it's it like has a short circuit to it.
- 50:07Joe: Oh yeah so there was like a little more you know with that to it yeah with that scene it's almost like a Easter egg and then a payoff and you know and uh but still he you know gets shot right into it and then you uh you have the death by stereo kind of and Joel Schumacher said that they had to actually add uh some more screen time to let the laughs go because they added some extra scenes because they like the when the audience saw that the reaction was just like nice I like how they like really held the vampire back like it just like you know going into it yeah like that it's a vampire movie and like they don't hide it from you like they show them going after people but they show it in first person.
- 51:06Dylan: Yes.
- 51:07Dylan: So like you never see the vampire until later.
- 51:11Dylan: So then when you get to that you know bonfire scene uh-huh and they all change and it has the the fire glow on them like that payoff is just so good.
- 51:22Joe: Yeah yeah it's it goes back to the kind of the Jaws thing you know like with Jaws you know the you got his perspective of things yeah and really it goes back to uh they only they had a very limited budget and they had they're very limited on special effects and how they were going to do things and so they decided to do kind of the Jaws direction of things and they they when they did the scenes there's one kind of initial thing where after they're done uh killing they go into the cave and you kind of see that them going in there.
- 52:02Joe: Well there was another the other shot when they go to find Sam and and the frog brothers they just put that scene in reverse yeah I noticed that I noticed that yeah and so they had you know because they had they had I guess they had forgotten to do a shot to where they're coming out yeah so they just reversed it yeah because my immediate thought was what are we doing flying backwards?
- 52:31Joe: Right right yeah yeah yeah yeah and uh yeah it's kind of cool with the makeup and stuff where and how they added the feet you know yeah because he wanted to have some kind of like kind of like vampire bat throw throwback into yeah you know that kind of lore stuff um and yeah it it's definitely cool how they just save it and you know they they prolong things and you're not really sure what yeah you know yeah I mean another one for me is like the final house like showdown uh it was just so good yeah all the just all the different ways that they you know killed him and like you know the bathtub yeah and he's like he's like oh garlic doesn't work oh yeah yeah the garlic's not what you should be worried about yeah yeah I mean all the all the uh uh booby traps that they set it's very goonies yes it's very data yeah yeah it is it is I wish they would have had data but uh yeah I mean it I love it because they just show the setup and the everything they're doing they go into the Catholic church and still the holy water you know smash the garlic and and get all that ready and then like you know when that first uh they're talking initially when they're talking to Sam about vampires and them dying they describe vampires some in explode and some implode and and all that and they actually show all the different vampires imploding and exploding and like that first one that just like you know he goes through the pipes of the house and everything so crazy.
- 54:39Joe: Yeah and then save the best for last year yeah in my humble opinion but I mean grandpa yeah that payoff that's the whole payoff man like the fact that he knows the whole time what's going on and they're just trying to figure it out like at any point he could have been like hey guys by the way right don't go out at night yeah but the funny thing too is that would they have believed him you know like right would the daughter have thought oh he's going senile now oh yeah you know because they definitely lead into that yeah like oh grandpa's been on his own for a little too long yeah yeah they think he's dead when they walk in so it's yeah it had to be that way yeah that's man I mean there's yeah just so many good stuff that sticks out like the other thing too is that kind of looking back on the reveal of star and who she is and everything like looking back at when Michael first sees her it's actually her kind of vampiric feminine while that's pulling him in it's not necessarily him like falling in love with her it's her kind of attracting him so that she charming him so that she can take him and you know be her first.
- 56:57Joe: Carla I want to say Santa Clara because there is a place called Santa Clara um yeah Kiefer Sutherland's distinct hairstyle was based on like glam punk oh yeah you can definitely pick up on that yeah yeah if you look at some of the 80s stars at the time uh specifically Billy Idol has that look yeah yeah like they have to have modeled it after him um so when Michael is floating in the room it's kind of like um like in back to the future in the first scene they go from the uh they go from a real set a live set you know real street to the back lot yeah and then back to like Burbank like it goes from Burbank to you know all these different places right and so what they did with this was with a floating scene where you know he's first becoming the vampire and the you know they're on the phone with the mom and all that right he goes he's on a lift initially like he's he's kind of on this lift yeah and then he's in the studio on a uh ceiling that's built upside down and then and so he's like kind of like moving back and forth and then he's on wires floating in the air and then he goes outside and so then they're on the outside set and he's floating again from with a lift with you know wires you know so it's like they had to do all these different shots in different places to make it one cohesive.
- 58:46Joe: Hey it works though it does it does and the same thing I think I mentioned with the foot bridge is they had to you know they initially shot on the foot bridge and then they went into a studio into a higher ceiling studio set where you can all fall on boxes and stuff with plenty of fog in the back.
- 59:05Joe: Right it's so cool how they worked that in any way you know because it's like spooky and foggy yeah so can't have vampires without the fog.
- 59:18Joe: Yeah so to your Twilight uh question uh Coryham said that all the blood had glitter in it to give it a shimmery effect yeah but it was it was slimier than blood too so funny yeah because yeah when the vampire blood like sprayed all over them yeah and I was like I was like Joe it's shiny it's sparkling um so the film began June 2nd 1986 and ended June 23rd 1986 so it was like within the month that they filmed the whole movie wow and you know that's that's probably just a production you know but that's still filming um like I think when the movie started uh Jason Patrick was 18 and but he had his 20th on on on set oh yeah that'd be cool yeah so there's like all this development and and all this stuff but he had his 20th on set nice yeah it's it's a long ways um in Max's video store you can see a single copy of of the Goonies oh yeah which again starred Corey Feldman and was you know Richard Donner directed it.
- 1:00:47Joe: Yeah yeah yeah there's a couple of Easter eggs another one is um there's uh there's a uh poster of uh echo and the bunny man in the back yeah um and then like funny funny lore is that so Sam has a poster of Rob Lowe on on his closet door I noticed that so the poster had sparked rumors of a debate on what Sam's orientation was oh yeah because it was on the closet so and so there was this subtext you know that was floating around and you know but the funny thing too is that there's a picture of Molly Ringwald on the other side and and so what like actually came out was Schumacher just said like I had just worked with Rob Lowe on St.
- 1:01:48Joe: Almo's Fire and thought it would be funny to put up his poster in there and then he thought you know these kids would probably have a bunch of brat pack actors on the wall anyway.
- 1:02:00Joe: So there was no subtext there was no intention of anything but it just kind of floated on and just worked out that way yeah and the way he dressed and he had one earring and all this stuff yeah it's like people will run with everything and this was before the internet so yeah there was no way to confirm it through a podcast um the name Michael is mentioned approximately a hundred and eighty eighteen times yeah wow in case you forget who you're talking about yeah exactly so since it is our spooky month in case you didn't know Joe we're watching spooky movies oh that explains it yeah so we're gonna have a uh spooky meter okay we don't want to call it the twilight meter the twilight meter so we're gonna kind of line up how our movies of this month kind of compare and just see like you know how they were how they were made um kind of carries that Halloween tradition with it.
- 1:03:23Dylan: Yeah so um this one definitely covers kind of that campy Halloween feel to it though.
- 1:03:33Joe: Yeah yeah yeah yeah on you know when you asked me if it is it more like Twilight or is it more like Fright Night You know I forgot about some of those gory scenes yeah and those you know and so I'm like well maybe it's more like Fright night than I thought it was you know I mean I just figured it was more Twilight just because of the shirtless saxophone player.
- 1:03:57Joe: Yeah yeah it really throws you off at the beginning right Joel Schumacher's really good about that Twilight doesn't even exist yet but I'm gonna throw them all off with the shining eye foreshadowing yeah yeah I would definitely say that it's uh a good Halloween night movie though yeah like it definitely would go on like the the you know watch rotation yeah yeah I mean there's you know in Santa Cruz where the movie was filmed they do uh you know uh Lost Boys Night and yeah so yeah I think it'd be cool to go see it in the theater and you know so yeah spooky meter spooky meter I would have to rate this probably a ooh I'd give it an eight I enjoyed it yeah I thought it was good yeah yeah yeah um I'm gonna add a 0.5 oh here we go just for the for the uh amount of uh core memories yeah yeah okay yeah I will allow it this time okay yeah I mean literally texting my brother on on some of this stuff and when I watched it the other night I sent him a picture of the the friend yeah and he recognizes stuff like that too have you seen podcast bringing families together yes well thanks for listening to have you seen the movie podcast make sure to follow the show on your favorite podcast app and if you're enjoying it leave us a five star rating it really helps the show grow and we want to hear from you text us your name and a movie suggestion using the link in the description you can follow all of our socials in the description as well everything you need is right there.
- 1:06:06Joe: We'll be back next week with another movie premiere Joe I got one last question for you do you own a saxophone?
- 1:06:24Dylan: I don't but I played it in junior high I don't but I do have a few bottles of baby oil.
- 1:06:31Joe: Yeah will I play it again?
- 1:06:33Joe: I still believe this is a roll credit studio production
