- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14In our current series, Fruitful Work, we're asking
- 0:16the question, what kind of fruit am I
- 0:18bearing at work?
- 0:19Because we don't always bear the fruit that
- 0:21we want to, but by God's grace, by
- 0:23the power of the Holy Spirit, we can
- 0:24bear fruit that is good.
- 0:27And we've been working backwards through Paul's list
- 0:29of the parts of the fruit of the
- 0:30Spirit in Galatians chapter 5.
- 0:32Today, we get to patience.
- 0:39I immediately thought of Calvin and Hobbes when
- 0:42I thought about patience because of how much
- 0:45Calvin tries his parents' patience.
- 0:48And if for some reason you've never read
- 0:49Calvin and Hobbes, I want you to pause
- 0:51this podcast and pull out your smartphone or
- 0:53your device and Google Calvin and Hobbes and
- 0:55read a few panels because the art that
- 0:58Bill Watterson gave the world in that comic
- 1:00strip far surpasses anything that could enrich your
- 1:04life that you'll get out of this podcast
- 1:05series.
- 1:06But just in case that's you and you
- 1:09haven't followed my instructions and paused the podcast
- 1:10and gone to experience the glory of Calvin
- 1:12and Hobbes for yourself, let me explain.
- 1:15Calvin is a first grader.
- 1:17He is always getting up to no good.
- 1:19He is creatively innovative in his capacity for
- 1:22troublemaking.
- 1:24And so understandably, his mom and his dad
- 1:26often lose patience with him.
- 1:28So I've got a panel right in front
- 1:29of me here in the first panel.
- 1:31Mom's looking under the bed and she's shouting,
- 1:34Calvin, come out from wherever you're hiding and
- 1:35take your bath.
- 1:36And then the second panel, she's got her
- 1:38hand up against her mouth and she's shouting
- 1:40even louder.
- 1:41Do you hear me, Calvin?
- 1:42I mean now.
- 1:43And the now, you know, all of the
- 1:45text is hand lettered by Bill Watterson.
- 1:47So the now is big, bolded, underlined, exclamation
- 1:49point.
- 1:50It's leaping off the page.
- 1:51You really feel the emotional twinge of impatience
- 1:57that seizing Calvin's mom in this moment, because
- 2:00that's that's how great it gets better.
- 2:02But, you know, Bill Watterson is also one
- 2:05of the most careful in regards to licensing
- 2:07Calvin and Hobbes.
- 2:08I've probably already broken some sort of terrible
- 2:10copyright law just by quoting the first two
- 2:12panels on this podcast.
- 2:14Bill Watterson's lawyers don't come after me.
- 2:16But anyways, just go look it up by
- 2:17an anthology series, money well spent.
- 2:21But the point is it's easy to lose
- 2:24patience with a person who tries our patience.
- 2:27So if the fruit of the spirit includes
- 2:30patience, what kind of patience could it be?
- 2:33What kind of patience do we need?
- 2:36Well, the word that's translated patience here sometimes
- 2:39translated long suffering, someone who's able to suffer
- 2:42for a long time, it can also be
- 2:44translated great heartedness.
- 2:47And those two images kind of both have
- 2:49the same idea of like a length or
- 2:51a greatness.
- 2:52You have a supply of something.
- 2:53You need a supply of something in order
- 2:55to be patient with someone.
- 2:59New Testament scholar FF Bruce, he makes us
- 3:01think of the English word short tempered.
- 3:04He says, OK, think about short tempered.
- 3:06The Greek word for patience is the opposite
- 3:08of that.
- 3:08So if we had an English word that
- 3:09was long tempered, that would be the best
- 3:12translation.
- 3:13Again, this idea that you have length, you
- 3:14have a supply that you can use before
- 3:17you get to the point of having a
- 3:18temper, before you get to the point of
- 3:20being angry with someone.
- 3:22So to understand patience, it can also be
- 3:25helpful to understand anger.
- 3:27When do we get angry with someone else?
- 3:28When do we have a temper with someone
- 3:29else?
- 3:30When are we short tempered?
- 3:32Well, it tends to be again with timing
- 3:34when we're in a rush, when we're eager
- 3:36to be somewhere other than where we are
- 3:38right now.
- 3:39Calvin's mom, she doesn't want to be in
- 3:40Calvin's bedroom hunting for him all over the
- 3:42house.
- 3:42She wants to be giving him a bath
- 3:44in the bathroom.
- 3:44She's got an agenda for the night and
- 3:46Calvin is throwing up a roadblock in her
- 3:48agenda.
- 3:48That's why she's getting angry.
- 3:50This is exactly the same for us.
- 3:52It's when something throws a roadblock in our
- 3:54agenda, when a person is not cooperating with
- 3:56what we want to see happen in a
- 3:58certain situation that we get short tempered, that
- 4:00we get angry.
- 4:02So patience is having an inner disposition that
- 4:05allows you, even when there's a roadblock in
- 4:08your agenda, to continue to suffer, to continue
- 4:12to put up with the other person, to
- 4:15continue to be patient.
- 4:17Another way of thinking about this is that
- 4:19rather than rushing ahead to the place you
- 4:22want to be, patience is all about being
- 4:24present right here, right now.
- 4:28It's a capacity for presence.
- 4:31Catholic writer Henry Nowan speaks to this aspect
- 4:35of patience in his delightful little book, The
- 4:37Path of Waiting.
- 4:39He writes, a waiting person is a patient
- 4:43person.
- 4:44The word patience means the willingness to stay
- 4:47where we are and live the situation out
- 4:50to the full and the belief that something
- 4:51hidden there will manifest itself to us.
- 4:55Patient living means to live actively in the
- 4:57present and wait there.
- 4:59Waiting then is not passive.
- 5:01It involves nurturing the moment as a mother
- 5:04nurtures the child that is growing in her
- 5:06womb.
- 5:09Isn't that a beautiful image?
- 5:11Nurturing the moment like an expectant mother nurtures
- 5:14her child.
- 5:15Believing that something can happen in this moment
- 5:18right where we are.
- 5:21So let's think about what makes that hard?
- 5:23What makes it hard to be present in
- 5:25the moment like that?
- 5:27Well, I thought of three ways that it's
- 5:28hard in the work context.
- 5:30One is probably very familiar.
- 5:31It's waiting for the work day to be
- 5:33over.
- 5:34This literally happened while I was getting ready
- 5:37to record this podcast.
- 5:38I was looking at the clock.
- 5:39I was like, man, you know, I've done
- 5:40a lot of extra work recently.
- 5:42Maybe I should just kick off early for
- 5:43the day.
- 5:43It would be nice if I could just
- 5:45go read my Star Wars novel.
- 5:47But then, you know, the irony hit me.
- 5:49I'm like, I'm literally recording a podcast about
- 5:51patience and work and long suffering and says,
- 5:54okay, okay.
- 5:55You know, I bit the bullet and decided
- 5:57to go ahead and prep and record another
- 5:59podcast episode.
- 6:02But this is true in our experience of
- 6:04work, right?
- 6:05The clock moves slower in the afternoon than
- 6:07in the morning.
- 6:07As we're getting close to the end of
- 6:08the work day, it's so easy to get
- 6:10distracted, to disengage from work, to just be
- 6:13fantasizing about our supper or our evening plans
- 6:16rather than to really stay in it.
- 6:19So that's one way that we need patients
- 6:21at work.
- 6:22Another way is with people.
- 6:24Again, patience is primarily about how we interact
- 6:25with other people.
- 6:26So at work, do you ever have people
- 6:28who try your patience?
- 6:30I sure do.
- 6:31Whether it's a, you know, an insufferable boss
- 6:34or a forgetful coworker or a fussy client.
- 6:37Whatever the case may be, we face people
- 6:39who have flaws, who have foibles, who try
- 6:43our patience at work.
- 6:45So that's another place where we need patients.
- 6:46We need that capacity to be present, not
- 6:48just in the moment, but present to that
- 6:51person in the moment.
- 6:54And the final way we need patients that
- 6:55I thought of is at more of a
- 6:57bigger, zoomed out perspective.
- 6:59Not just patients in a moment, but patients
- 7:02over the long haul, waiting for a career
- 7:05breakthrough.
- 7:06Maybe you're job hunting, you're just waiting for
- 7:08that job offer, or you're waiting for a
- 7:10promotion, waiting for a raise.
- 7:12If you're an entrepreneur, maybe you're waiting for
- 7:13an investor to say yes, or waiting to
- 7:15turn that corner towards profitability.
- 7:19Maybe in a deeper sense, it's not so
- 7:21much about your situation, but the meaning of
- 7:22your work.
- 7:23You're waiting for something that really feels like
- 7:25it's your thing, like it connects with your
- 7:27vocation and calling, like it would bring satisfaction
- 7:30and meaning.
- 7:33And this is bigger, long-term kind of
- 7:34waiting is often the hardest, because it may
- 7:36be tied to a sense of deep disappointment.
- 7:38It can even be tied with our sense
- 7:39of identity when it has to do with
- 7:41calling.
- 7:43It could be really challenging to wait in
- 7:46that moment.
- 7:48So what's the solution?
- 7:50How do we find that fruit of the
- 7:52spirit kind of patience that we need for
- 7:54these situations at work?
- 7:56Well, as usual, it's by turning our heart
- 7:59towards God, towards his character, as it's revealed
- 8:02in Jesus Christ, as it's ministered to us
- 8:04by the power of the Holy Spirit, that
- 8:05we find what we really need.
- 8:08Earlier in this series, we looked at where
- 8:10God talks to Moses in Exodus chapter 34
- 8:13and reveals his name.
- 8:15I want to go back to that verse
- 8:16just real briefly and focus on one specific
- 8:19part of it.
- 8:20So again, this is when God is proclaiming
- 8:21his name to Moses, starting in verse 6.
- 8:26The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious
- 8:29God, slow to anger, abounding in love and
- 8:33faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands and forgiving wickedness,
- 8:38rebellion, and sin.
- 8:41That phrase, slow to anger, is key here.
- 8:45Just like we were looking at needing a
- 8:46supply of something being long tempered, God has
- 8:50a really big supply of whatever that something
- 8:52is.
- 8:53He is slow to anger.
- 8:56He does not get tempered quickly.
- 9:00The Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew
- 9:03Scriptures, actually uses the exact same Greek word
- 9:06that Paul uses in Galatians chapter 5 for
- 9:09patience to translate that phrase slow to anger.
- 9:11They say, God is patient, the Lord, the
- 9:15Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, patient, abounding
- 9:18in love and faithfulness.
- 9:22So again, if patience means the capacity to
- 9:24be present in the moment and God has
- 9:26a big supply of whatever it is that
- 9:28you need to have patience, another way of
- 9:31saying the same thing is God has an
- 9:33immense capacity to be present in the present
- 9:36moment, to be present with us in our
- 9:41moments.
- 9:42That's part of how God is patient with
- 9:44us, is he's present with us, even though
- 9:47I'm sure often we try his patience.
- 9:51I want to look at just one biblical
- 9:52story, one Bible story, where someone has this
- 9:56kind of patience of the Lord on their
- 9:58side.
- 9:59And it's somebody who's in that third category,
- 10:00somebody who's waiting for a bigger breakthrough.
- 10:04This is the character of Joseph in the
- 10:06book of Genesis.
- 10:07And his story is very long, we don't
- 10:09have time to get into the whole thing.
- 10:10We'll just look at one little turn in
- 10:11his story when he is falsely imprisoned.
- 10:14What does he do when he's in that
- 10:16prison, when he doesn't know what's going to
- 10:18come next, when he doesn't know if he
- 10:19has hope of ever giving out?
- 10:22Here's what Genesis says, chapter 39 verse 21.
- 10:26But the Lord was with Joseph and showed
- 10:29him steadfast love and gave him favor in
- 10:32the sight of the keeper of the prison.
- 10:34And the keeper of the prison put Joseph
- 10:35in charge of all the prisoners who were
- 10:37in the prison.
- 10:38Whatever was done there, he was the one
- 10:39who did it.
- 10:40The keeper of the prison paid no attention
- 10:42to anything that was in Joseph's charge because
- 10:44the Lord was with him.
- 10:46And whatever he did, the Lord made it
- 10:48succeed.
- 10:51Joseph has been arrested, he's been falsely convicted,
- 10:54he's been thrown in jail, thrown in prison.
- 10:56He doesn't know when he's going to get
- 10:57out, if ever.
- 10:58We know the end of his story.
- 10:59If you've read it, you know, he does
- 11:01get out and some really exciting things happen,
- 11:02but he doesn't know that yet.
- 11:04And what does Joseph decide to do?
- 11:06Well, Joseph looks around and he sees, oh,
- 11:10there are other prisoners here.
- 11:12There's a keeper or a warden here.
- 11:13There are guards here.
- 11:15There are human beings here.
- 11:16How can I help?
- 11:18How can I address the real human needs
- 11:19in this moment where I am?
- 11:23And how is it that Joseph could have
- 11:24that attitude?
- 11:25Because the Lord was with Joseph and showed
- 11:28him steadfast love.
- 11:30The Lord was present in that prison with
- 11:33Joseph.
- 11:35And so what was the solution for Joseph
- 11:36is also the solution for us.
- 11:39When we're waiting for the end of the
- 11:40workday and looking at the clock, it's not
- 11:43just us versus the clock.
- 11:45It's us with the Lord.
- 11:47It's saying, oh Lord, how can I be
- 11:50present to you in these final moments of
- 11:52the workday?
- 11:53God will show you how.
- 11:56When we're trying to be patient with the
- 11:58person in front of us who's trying our
- 12:00patience, it's not just us versus that person.
- 12:02It's, oh, this is a person who bears
- 12:04the image of God.
- 12:06Lord God, how can I love this person
- 12:08with your love in this moment?
- 12:10God will show you how.
- 12:13And then in those bigger moments of waiting
- 12:15for a career breakthrough, waiting for our situation
- 12:18to get better and we don't know if
- 12:19or when or how it will, it's not
- 12:21just us against the world.
- 12:22It's not just us against unemployment.
- 12:24It's not just us against our difficult situation
- 12:26or our dead end job.
- 12:29It's the Lord with us in that situation.
- 12:32And we can say, Lord, show me how
- 12:34to be present to you even in this.
- 12:38And God will show you how.
- 12:41Christian leader Nancy Ortberg in a podcast series
- 12:44that she joined as a guest.
- 12:45This is the podcast, Become New.
- 12:47You can look up this series called Made
- 12:49to Count.
- 12:49It was back in 2022.
- 12:50It's all about work and vocation.
- 12:52That's a great listen.
- 12:52She has this great phrase.
- 12:54She says when she joined the podcast, she
- 12:56says, there are no stepping stone jobs.
- 13:01When you think of your job just as
- 13:03a means to an end, just as a
- 13:04way to get somewhere that you're not currently.
- 13:07It puts you out of the present moment.
- 13:09It makes you disengage from the present moment.
- 13:11You're seeing it just as a stepping stone
- 13:13just as a way to get somewhere else.
- 13:15But Nancy Ortberg says, no, there are no
- 13:18stepping stone jobs.
- 13:19Be present in the job you have today,
- 13:22today.
- 13:23Because that's where the Lord is.
- 13:26That's where the Lord can be found at
- 13:27your job.
- 13:29And when you're present, not just to your
- 13:31work, not just to the people at your
- 13:32work, but also to the Lord, you begin
- 13:35to grow in His kind of patience.
- 13:40Lord Jesus, thank you for being the patient
- 13:42one, for being patient with us, for being
- 13:44present with us.
- 13:46We invite you into our work.
- 13:48We want to be present to our work,
- 13:50present to the people around us, and most
- 13:51of all present to you.
- 13:53Show us how.
- 13:54Do your work in us as we do
- 13:56our work with you.
- 13:58Amen.
- 14:03Thanks for listening.
