- 0:09Speaker 1: It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. And today
- 0:14Speaker 1: kicks off another week. It's a short week and the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Eagles face the Washington Commanders in primetime Sunday night in
- 0:21Speaker 1: Landover at Northwest Stadium. But before that happens, we have
- 0:26Speaker 1: a week of preparation to cover. And today was the first.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Day of that.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And we heard from Nick Sirianni earlier in the day.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And we also heard from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. We
- 0:39Speaker 1: heard from Jalen Carter in the locker room. We heard
- 0:41Speaker 1: from Reek Wolin. I had a chance to catch up
- 0:45Speaker 1: with running back Elijah Mitchell, who's on the practice squad.
- 0:49Speaker 1: But as the injury situation continues to develop here with
- 0:54Speaker 1: the Eagles, he may be factoring relatively prominently in the
- 0:58Speaker 1: backfield on Sunday night.
- 0:59Speaker 2: But we'll get to all of that.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I want to remind everybody to continue to check out
- 1:04Speaker 1: the coverage on InsideTheBirds.com, the Checko Daily app, the Inside
- 1:08Speaker 1: the Birds podcast, Birds Weekly, and all the great shows
- 1:11Speaker 1: that we have inside the data, all the great stuff
- 1:13Speaker 1: that we have on the platform. And right before we
- 1:18Speaker 1: got into the locker room and before Vic Fangio spoke,
- 1:21Speaker 1: the Eagles made some roster moves and they placed running
- 1:27Speaker 1: back Damian Pierce on injured reserve. He injured himself in
- 1:31Speaker 1: the game. I think that was in the third or
- 1:33Speaker 1: fourth quarter. It's an undisclosed injury because it happened so
- 1:36Speaker 1: late in the game it wasn't disclosed. But Jaden Blue
- 1:41Speaker 1: is now back on the active roster. Elijah Mitchell is
- 1:44Speaker 1: on the practice squad. He reverted back to the practice
- 1:47Speaker 1: squad after the game. He was elevated for Monday Night Football.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And then on the practice squad, the Eagles signed guard
- 1:53Speaker 1: Evan Bernston, wide receiver Quentin Skinner, and defensive back Sean Wade.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So let's look at the running back situation, and then
- 2:01Speaker 1: we'll get to the practice report and some of the
- 2:03Speaker 1: things that Vic Fangio had to say. The running back
- 2:09Speaker 1: situation is a little shaky right now. And when you
- 2:13Speaker 1: consider the fact that Saquon Barkley battled to go out
- 2:17Speaker 1: there and do whatever he could for the team, but
- 2:19Speaker 1: he has the hamstring and the back injury, and Saquon
- 2:25Speaker 1: you have to wonder that version of Saquon Barkley, he
- 2:27Speaker 1: was still dominant, but sometimes you have to.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Protect the player from themself.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And in this case, maybe you want to give him
- 2:35Speaker 1: a little bit more time to get healthy. And even
- 2:37Speaker 1: if he does play, I have to imagine that the
- 2:41Speaker 1: Eagles would have him on a pretty significant pitch count,
- 2:44Speaker 1: just given the nature of his injury.
- 2:47Speaker 2: And you're not going to make it any better by
- 2:48Speaker 2: being out there.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You need a healthy Saquon Barkley or close to healthy
- 2:53Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley in order to really try to get this
- 2:57Speaker 1: thing rolling. And maybe this week, on a short week
- 3:00Speaker 1: no less... you would think that maybe it would be
- 3:04Speaker 1: pretty questionable that he would be out there. Now, Saquon
- 3:07Speaker 1: seemed to think that he was going to be able to,
- 3:09Speaker 1: he seemed pretty optimistic after the game. But then again,
- 3:13Speaker 1: you have to let this week play out in practice.
- 3:15Speaker 1: But if he doesn't go, and even if he does,
- 3:19Speaker 1: the number two running back in that case, if Saquon
- 3:21Speaker 1: does go, would be Elijah Mitchell. And he's a sixth-year veteran.
- 3:25Speaker 1: He was drafted out of Louisiana, Lafayette, Louisiana. And I
- 3:29Speaker 1: remember watching him play. I covered the Sun Belt. for
- 3:33Speaker 1: a different outlet back then, years and years ago, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: that was a player that I highlighted. I think that
- 3:38Speaker 1: there's still stories that I've written about him as a
- 3:41Speaker 1: player to watch at one point, and they had a
- 3:43Speaker 1: three-headed rushing attack at Louisiana Lafayette, and I thought that
- 3:48Speaker 1: he was the most impressive, and he's hung around.
- 3:51Speaker 2: He jumped in.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I talked to him today, and he mentioned that when
- 3:56Speaker 1: his opportunity first came, it was because Raheem Mostert, a
- 3:59Speaker 1: former Eagles running back, got injured, and Kyle Shanahan ghosted
- 4:02Speaker 1: him and said, are you ready to go? And he
- 4:05Speaker 1: jumped in there, and he was a really good fit
- 4:06Speaker 1: for the outside zone and some of those stretch runs
- 4:09Speaker 1: that they were doing and they implemented there.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And he liked what he saw in Philadelphia.
- 4:16Speaker 1: For the brief time that he was there in training camp.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And he mentioned that if there was an opportunity to
- 4:22Speaker 1: come back, that's where.
- 4:23Speaker 2: He wanted to be.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And talked about the connection that he has with Nick Sirianni.
- 4:28Speaker 1: He really seems to like the organization, even though he
- 4:31Speaker 1: hasn't had a ton of time.
- 4:33Speaker 2: He felt the brotherhood.
- 4:36Speaker 1: He felt just the overall warm reception that he got.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And he ends up coming back.
- 4:42Speaker 1: He mentioned that when he did get hurt and waived,
- 4:44Speaker 1: he was working in Dallas, working out at Sports Academy.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And he hadn't really played a ton of special teams yet.
- 4:53Speaker 1: But he was out there on special teams for the
- 4:55Speaker 1: Eagles on Monday night. By the end of the game,
- 4:57Speaker 1: he was getting carries because they shut down Saquon and
- 5:01Speaker 1: Damian Pierce left the game injured. So you could see
- 5:04Speaker 1: a lot of Elijah Mitchell on Sunday night. In fact,
- 5:08Speaker 1: you're likely to, regardless of what happens one way or another.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But I'm curious to see what he can do. And
- 5:14Speaker 1: if you think about this. Think about all of the
- 5:17Speaker 1: Eagles running backs who have taken snaps this season. Saquon Barkley,
- 5:21Speaker 1: Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley, Damian Pierce, Carson Steele, Elijah Mitchell,
- 5:28Speaker 1: maybe Jaden Blue this week as well. And then the
- 5:31Speaker 1: running backs who are on injured reserve. Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley,
- 5:35Speaker 1: Damian Pierce, Carson Steele. And I mean, that is just
- 5:40Speaker 1: one of those seasons that you just can't make sense of.
- 5:43Speaker 1: That position has just been injury riddled. And you could
- 5:49Speaker 1: see as many as seven players through the first eight
- 5:53Speaker 1: weeks of the.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Season get backfield, get carries out of the backfield.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It's just unheard of. And I just wanted to kind
- 6:00Speaker 1: of summarize the running back situation right now as the
- 6:05Speaker 1: week begins. So let's get to the practice report because
- 6:10Speaker 1: Wednesday's practice was a walkthrough, a closed walkthrough, and the
- 6:16Speaker 1: report is an estimation. So not practicing for the Eagles,
- 6:20Speaker 1: had they practiced, would be running back Saquon Barkley, hamstring back,
- 6:24Speaker 1: linebacker Jahad Campbell, hamstring quad, wide receiver Britton Covey, knee,
- 6:29Speaker 1: cornerback Jonathan Jones, hamstring back. Wide receiver, Devontae Smith, hamstring.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Wide receiver, Dontavian Wicks, ankle.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Limited.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Defensive back, Michael Carter, abdomen. Outside linebacker, Jonathan Grenard, ankle.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Outside linebacker, J. Lux Hunt, knee, ankle. Linebacker, Smile Mondin, knee.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Defensive tackle, Mauro Jomo, neck. Outside linebacker, Nolan Smith, concussion.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Good news there that Nolan Smith would have worked. had
- 6:55Speaker 1: the Eagles practiced, and he's returning from the concussion, as
- 6:59Speaker 1: I mentioned, and that's a very encouraging sign there. Full
- 7:03Speaker 1: participants would have been linebacker Zach Vaughn, shoulder, cornerback Ja'Corian Bennett, knee,
- 7:09Speaker 1: guard Landon Dickerson, pectoral, outside linebacker Arnold Abacate, shoulder, tight
- 7:14Speaker 1: end Dallas Goddard, knee, center Drew Kendall, knee, guard Tyler Steen, shoulder.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Great news there with regard.
- 7:21Speaker 1: To especially Landon Dickerson, shoulder, Dallas Goddard who returned from
- 7:25Speaker 1: that game, Drew Kendall who returned for that game, that
- 7:29Speaker 1: they left that game healthy and that is certainly encouraging
- 7:34Speaker 1: because the Eagles needless to say need all of the
- 7:37Speaker 1: help that they can get as they are considerably undermanned
- 7:41Speaker 1: as it is to be able to go into Washington
- 7:44Speaker 1: and put their best foot forward. So I'll be obviously
- 7:48Speaker 1: keeping an eye on Saquon Barkley this week along with
- 7:51Speaker 1: You know, Jihad Campbell, who now has the hamstring and quad.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Wicks and Smith, of course, I'll be keeping an eye on.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Smith with the hamstring, I don't know. That's a tricky situation.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I've talked a lot this season about how fickle.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Those injuries are.
- 8:09Speaker 1: You might need to shut him down for another game,
- 8:11Speaker 1: maybe another week after that, just to ensure that it's
- 8:14Speaker 1: fully healed and recovered, because otherwise it's going to continue
- 8:18Speaker 1: to be an ongoing issue. This is something that he
- 8:20Speaker 1: first sustained August 4th in training camp, and it's certainly
- 8:24Speaker 1: not going to get any better by playing. I know
- 8:26Speaker 1: Devontae has tried to play through it at certain points,
- 8:29Speaker 1: but you risk setback, and that's really what's happening right now.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Wicks with the ankle, we'll have to wait and see there.
- 8:37Speaker 1: But We also heard from Jalen Carter today. And Jalen
- 8:42Speaker 1: Carter mentioned that he's probably not going to be 100%
- 8:45Speaker 1: this year. But he mentioned that the wrist is getting,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you know, the cast on his wrist is getting smaller.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And he said he's feeling better. It's probably not going
- 8:56Speaker 1: to be 100% this season, but he's feeling better. He's
- 8:58Speaker 1: getting better. And the cast is getting smaller. He said,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I think last week was my last week. But to
- 9:05Speaker 1: be safe, I might just do a soft cast, leave
- 9:08Speaker 1: it at that, and then maybe next week after.
- 9:10Speaker 2: No cast.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Of course, that's probably contributing to the disappointing start to
- 9:17Speaker 1: the season for him. He obviously keeps his expectations very high.
- 9:21Speaker 1: No one's going to keep them higher than the player themselves.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So I understand that while there's a lot of frustration
- 9:27Speaker 1: on the outside, just understand that all of these players
- 9:31Speaker 1: have a lot of pride. And they don't want to
- 9:34Speaker 1: put something on tape that's not their best. And that's
- 9:37Speaker 1: something that they're, you know, you have to wear that.
- 9:40Speaker 1: They're going to have to wear what happened on Monday
- 9:41Speaker 1: night this week.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And they.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Have taken accountability for it. Jalen Carter spoke today, as
- 9:49Speaker 1: I mentioned. And he said, when asked about the defense
- 9:54Speaker 1: being considered a strength going into the season, why do
- 9:57Speaker 1: you think it hasn't in recent weeks performed to the
- 9:59Speaker 1: levels that many expected? And he said, you know, people's
- 10:02Speaker 1: standards are bigger than what ours are coming through the season.
- 10:06Speaker 2: We all know it's a fresh new season. It's a
- 10:08Speaker 2: fresh restart.
- 10:08Speaker 1: No matter what we did last year, the last three years,
- 10:11Speaker 1: four years, don't matter. It's a whole new season. It's
- 10:14Speaker 1: a whole new group, new faces, new chemistry in the
- 10:16Speaker 1: locker room. So obviously we have to, you know, it's
- 10:19Speaker 1: a restart for us. We don't look at it like, oh,
- 10:21Speaker 1: we got, obviously we know we got good players, but
- 10:24Speaker 1: we don't go out there saying just because we got
- 10:26Speaker 1: good players, we're going to do this on the field.
- 10:29Speaker 1: It's not showing right now. So obviously we just got
- 10:31Speaker 1: to work together. One of our traits is, together detail toughness.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And that's what we're going to be working on this
- 10:38Speaker 2: week and.
- 10:40Speaker 1: At the end there he mentioned how would you when
- 10:43Speaker 1: asked about how would you assess your play this last
- 10:46Speaker 1: year and the year before and i give the same
- 10:49Speaker 1: answer so trash not to my expectations and i guess
- 10:54Speaker 1: not to what the fans.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Want and it really don't matter what they want so.
- 10:59Speaker 3: So this hit me when i was doing work around
- 11:01Speaker 3: the house the other day and trying to open up
- 11:03Speaker 3: some boxes and cut some things that I can never
- 11:06Speaker 3: find the scissors or.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Knives in my house.
- 11:08Speaker 3: And how great would it be if I just had
- 11:11Speaker 3: my own personal pocket knife that I had on me
- 11:14Speaker 3: all the time? And that's why I can't wait to
- 11:17Speaker 3: get my Benchmade knives. They've got this legendary bug out knife.

- 12:45Speaker 3: Right now, across the U.S., Americans have the potential to
- 12:47Speaker 3: harness limitless, clean, affordable energy. We could be powering our hospitals,
- 12:52Speaker 3: our schools, our farms, and so much more. In some places...
- 12:56Speaker 3: This abundant local power is already helping lower utility bills
- 13:00Speaker 3: and creating jobs. But depending on where you live, you
- 13:03Speaker 3: may not have the option to choose Limitless Energy for
- 13:06Speaker 3: your household. That has to change. We should all get
- 13:09Speaker 3: to choose the energy we pay for. Cheaper, cleaner, Limitless
- 13:14Speaker 3: Energy is out there. Let's find more ways to use it.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Head over to EnergyLimitless.com to learn more about your energy options.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You know, it's sometimes, you know, when you have your
- 13:25Speaker 1: own self expectations, nothing is more, nothing weighs heavier than
- 13:32Speaker 1: your own expectations. So while the fans expectations are extremely
- 13:35Speaker 1: high for Jalen Carter and rightfully so you've seen him
- 13:38Speaker 1: at his best, he holds himself to a higher standard. And, Look,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I thought he had some pointed responses there. It was
- 13:47Speaker 1: good to hear from him after the game. Reek Wolin
- 13:50Speaker 1: also spoke and had some good things to say as well.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And we also heard from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. And
- 13:59Speaker 1: I thought Vic was short and he was very concise
- 14:07Speaker 1: with his messaging there. But I don't know that I don't.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Know what I expected.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I thought maybe you would get a little bit more
- 14:16Speaker 1: of a fiery Vic Fangio coming off that game, and
- 14:19Speaker 1: we didn't necessarily get that. He was to the point,
- 14:22Speaker 1: but he mentioned that Jalen Carter, with regard to how
- 14:26Speaker 1: do you get him more consistent, he said he has
- 14:28Speaker 1: to have the mindset to be more consistent. And Vic
- 14:32Speaker 1: was accountable. He said he didn't do a good job
- 14:35Speaker 1: coaching on Monday night. And with Jalen Carter, the quote was,
- 14:38Speaker 1: he just needs to get the mindset to be consistent.
- 14:42Speaker 1: And Vic, with his accountability piece, mentioned that I did
- 14:46Speaker 1: not do a good job getting them ready in terms
- 14:49Speaker 1: of stopping the run. he's not going to make any excuses.
- 14:53Speaker 1: He's not going to pull any punches. So, I mean,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you're not going to get him, you know, flipping tables
- 14:59Speaker 1: over or anything, pounding on the podium or anything like that.
- 15:02Speaker 1: But you can, you can tell that he wasn't, he
- 15:04Speaker 1: wasn't pleased with that. And he has a certain standard
- 15:07Speaker 1: that's expected to be met. And that also starts with him.
- 15:11Speaker 1: He mentioned that he didn't do a good job coaching
- 15:13Speaker 1: that game. The players out on the field need to
- 15:15Speaker 1: do a better job executing it. That's me saying that. And,
- 15:21Speaker 1: I just think that when you consider all of that,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you know, I don't know what version of this Eagles
- 15:27Speaker 1: defense you're realistically going to get on Sunday against the Commanders,
- 15:32Speaker 1: but I have to think that it's going to be
- 15:34Speaker 1: a point of pride. And if you're looking at this season,
- 15:38Speaker 1: one week this year, you can say that that was
- 15:41Speaker 1: really bad and probably the worst that Vic Fangio has
- 15:45Speaker 1: coached and probably the worst that a Vic Fangio defense
- 15:48Speaker 1: has played. That being said, from an accountability, from a
- 15:53Speaker 1: pride standpoint and everything else, it's hard for me to
- 15:56Speaker 1: imagine that they're not going to come out raring to
- 15:59Speaker 1: go and trying to sort of, uh, reestablish themselves there
- 16:04Speaker 1: and make things happen defensively because they do have a
- 16:07Speaker 1: lot of talent on that group.
- 16:09Speaker 2: They need to be more consistent.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I don't necessarily, um, I'm not leaning into the fact
- 16:17Speaker 1: that they have played a lot of snaps this year.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I don't necessarily buy that, and they never have said that,
- 16:23Speaker 1: to be clear. But it's easy to draw a correlation
- 16:26Speaker 1: because they have been on the field for an extraordinarily.
- 16:31Speaker 2: High number of snaps, I guess, this year.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And the offense did their part, largely, on Monday night,
- 16:39Speaker 1: and the defense didn't do theirs. They didn't play well.
- 16:42Speaker 1: They didn't look fundamentally sound. They... looked a little disjointed
- 16:46Speaker 1: on the back end. And, you know, you need more
- 16:49Speaker 1: from your pass rush. There's just a lot of things
- 16:51Speaker 1: that we've been talking about at different points of the
- 16:54Speaker 1: season that all sort of culminated into the defensive collapse
- 16:59Speaker 1: that you saw on Monday night. So not exactly the
- 17:02Speaker 1: best showing from that group. It happened in prime time.
- 17:06Speaker 1: That was not their best effort. So again, I think
- 17:09Speaker 1: when having another opportunity to play in prime time, you're
- 17:12Speaker 1: going to see them play a little bit better. Now
- 17:15Speaker 1: the commander's offense is not as good as the Dallas offense.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Their offensive line is not as good as Dallas's.
- 17:22Speaker 1: So all of those things factor into my belief that
- 17:26Speaker 1: you're going to see a better version of the Eagles
- 17:27Speaker 1: defense on Sunday night. So we touched on a lot
- 17:31Speaker 1: of different topics. We're just getting started. The week is
- 17:34Speaker 1: just unfolding right now.
- 17:35Speaker 2: And so.
- 17:40Speaker 1: There's going to be plenty more on the DeCecco Daily Podcast,
- 17:43Speaker 1: plenty more on the Inside the Birds platform this week
- 17:46Speaker 1: as we get you ready for Week 8, Eagles Commanders.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
