- 0:00As I mentioned before, we are going through the prophets, the
- 0:04prophets who were reigning during the different times of
- 0:08the kings of Israel and Judah. And so we have talked about when
- 0:14we went through like first kings, second kings.
- 0:16I believe that this was discussed our prior books, we
- 0:20talked about Elijah and Elijah, and then we started talking
- 0:25about as far as the prophets go, Jonah, because he was the next
- 0:29one that came in the order of time.
- 0:32So in the like 790 to 770, Jonah was in that period.
- 0:37And now and then we did Amos. We just finished that book and
- 0:41now we're on Hosea. And so this is the next prophet
- 0:45that God sent to warn the people.
- 0:48Now, at this time, Judah and Israel are separate kingdoms.
- 0:54Israel consists of 10 tribes, and Judah and Benjamin are
- 0:59together. They're separate in the southern
- 1:01Kingdom. And so that's the context of
- 1:04this. This is when it happened during
- 1:06that time. And so it does have significance
- 1:09because he was giving this warning to the people of Israel
- 1:16before they were captured by the Assyrians.
- 1:21So this, this, I did read through the whole book and
- 1:27there's 14 chapters. And so maybe it'll be a couple
- 1:31weeks, depends how much I talk. And I'll try not to do too much
- 1:34talking, but only if I feel prompted to say something will I
- 1:39comment on them. So let's get into the
- 1:42introduction of what it says about the book of Hosea or
- 1:47Hosea. I don't know how to say that
- 1:50this book tells a story as contemporary as one discussed on
- 1:54today's talk shows, that of a man's love for his unfaithful
- 1:59wife. But the story of the prophet
- 2:03Hosea and his wife Gomer illustrates another love story,
- 2:09that of God's love for us, a love that endures even when our
- 2:13sins have broken his heart. Here is a picture of God who
- 2:16longs to forgive us when we turn to him.
- 2:19Notice when we turn to Him. So that's when we get
- 2:22forgiveness, when we turn, when we repent.
- 2:26OK, who wrote the book? Hosea, a prophet in the northern
- 2:29Kingdom of Israel. So he is living among the 10
- 2:33tribes of Israel, and he is speaking to them.
- 2:37You know, there is a verse that just came to mind.
- 2:38And it's like a prophet is never welcomed in his hometown.
- 2:41So here it is. Hosea is trying to tell, trying
- 2:45to warn Israel. Guess what's going to happen
- 2:48because of what condition we're in.
- 2:50And nobody believes him. That's just like every time God
- 2:54sends prophets. People don't listen.
- 2:57I mean some do, but not many. So again, this is what he was
- 3:01doing. To whom was it written?
- 3:03Hosea originally delivered his prophecies to the northern
- 3:07Kingdom of Israel. After Assyria conquered Israel,
- 3:11the words were transcribed to scrolls as a record of prophecy
- 3:17fulfilled and as a warning possibly to the remnant left
- 3:22behind in Israel or possibly to the people of Judah.
- 3:27Personally, I think there's also some last days biblical end
- 3:32times when we get to the very end of the book that's
- 3:35referenced. And I'll explain that when I
- 3:37when we get there. Approximately this, when was it
- 3:40written? Approximately 715 BC.
- 3:43But Hosea first prophesied around 753 BC and continued to
- 3:49speak to the people until Samaria and the Northern Kingdom
- 3:53fell in 722 BC. So he had a good, you know, 30
- 3:59plus years where he was speaking to these people, 30 years of
- 4:04speaking to the people about this.
- 4:07What was happening at this time? Jeroboam the Second was a wicked
- 4:11king whose leadership had produced a materialistic,
- 4:15immoral, unjust society. Following Jeroboam the Second, 6
- 4:20kings ruled Israel within 25 years.
- 4:24This was the twilight of the northern Kingdom.
- 4:29So God replaced kings very frequently over periods of time
- 4:36during when they were not obedient to him.
- 4:40And mostly all of the kings of Israel, of the 10 tribes of
- 4:44Israel were evil. And it also, it makes sense
- 4:49because God established Jerusalem and Judah had that at
- 4:56as its capital. But Israel had Samaria at its
- 5:00capital, and it was kind of a war, not a war, a competition
- 5:05between kings. And the one king of Israel
- 5:11didn't want, He wanted to keep his power.
- 5:15So there were two different kings that were established
- 5:18after Solomon's death, and neither one of them wanted to
- 5:22give up their power. I believe the king over Judah
- 5:25was anointed, but the king over Israel was not.
- 5:30It was like the People's Choice. And so there were consequences.
- 5:34It shows like every single if you read through the Bible in
- 5:37Chronicles and Kings. I think both of them kind of
- 5:41repeat some of the same things. They talk about this king was
- 5:45evil or this king was good or followed after the after the
- 5:48Lord. And none of the kings of the 10
- 5:52tribes of Israel were considered good in God's eyes.
- 5:56There was 1 Jehu which will also be mentioned in this book of
- 6:00Hosea who was used by God to pronounce judgment on Ahab's
- 6:06family because Ahab was an evil wicked queen king.
- 6:10He was married to Jezebel and there's a lot about them.
- 6:15They were very evil and God did use a Jehu to pronounce judgment
- 6:23on them. But we'll see in Hosea that Jehu
- 6:26still gets punished also, because what happens is God uses
- 6:32someone's free will to accomplish His ultimate purpose
- 6:37so He can use evil to bring about what He's has planned for
- 6:44the world. OK, So what to look for in
- 6:48Hosea? Don't be shocked by the
- 6:50prostitution, unfaithfulness, and sorrow in this book.
- 6:54Notice the stark consequences of sin as God stated His case
- 6:59against His people. Then look beyond Hosea's
- 7:02suffering and God's pain to see an example of love that will not
- 7:07quit. First, God's love for his people
- 7:11in Israel, and second, God's love for us.
- 7:15Look for ways that Hosea loved his loved his undeserving wife,
- 7:19and consider how God does the same for us.
- 7:24So the Bible really does put things in parable stories that
- 7:28people can relate to, to express the character of God and to
- 7:33express spiritual things. And so literal things do have
- 7:38symbolic meaning and sometimes spiritual meaning.
- 7:42And the more we read the Bible, the more that becomes apparent
- 7:46to us. So to start, let's pray.
- 7:49Dear God, please be with us as we read the words that you
- 7:52inspired this prophet to give to all of us today to read and and
- 7:58let us apply this to our own lives and also see the
- 8:00historical significance to us. But history repeats itself.
- 8:04So let us learn from this and be inspired by the Holy Spirit to
- 8:08change our lives, receive the Holy Spirit to change our lives
- 8:12and come in repentance to you because that's really what this
- 8:15book is all about is turning to God in repentance.
- 8:19So we ask that you guide us as we read this in Jesus name,
- 8:23Amen. The word of the Lord that came
- 8:26to Hosea son of Beri during the reigns of Uziah, Jotham, Ahaz
- 8:35and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam
- 8:39son of Jehovah Ash king of Israel, Hosea's wife and
- 8:45children. When the Lord began to speak
- 8:48through Hosea, the Lord said to him, Go marry a promiscuous A
- 8:54promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an
- 8:59adulterous wife, this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the
- 9:04Lord. So he married Gomer, daughter of
- 9:09Diblium, and she conceived and bore him a son.
- 9:16Then the Lord said to Hosea, call him Jezreel, because I will
- 9:21soon punish the House of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and
- 9:27I will put an end to the Kingdom of Israel.
- 9:31So he's saying that he's going to punish Jehu.
- 9:36Even though he used Jehu to accomplish to, I guess,
- 9:39exterminate some evil, he's still punishing Jehu for what he
- 9:44did in at the massacre at Jezreel.
- 9:47And he's also pronouncing an end to the Kingdom of Israel.
- 9:52And if you recall in 7/22, the 10 tribes of Israel were then
- 9:58captured by Assyria. So that was the end of the 10
- 10:01tribes. Then Judah, the Kingdom of Judah
- 10:04remained for a little bit longer, but it too also then was
- 10:08captured by the Babylonians. So we'll learn, you know, that's
- 10:11why we're doing these prophets in order to kind of have the
- 10:14context of what's happening. And this comes next and and kind
- 10:18of a sequential order because the Bible doesn't assemble the
- 10:21books that way. OK, So in that day, I will break
- 10:27Israel's bow In the valley of Jezreel, Gomer conceived again
- 10:31and gave birth to a daughter. Then the Lord said to Hosea,
- 10:35call her Lo Ruhama, which means not loved, for I will no longer
- 10:43show love to Israel, that I should at all forgive them.
- 10:47I will yet, yet I will show love to Judah.
- 10:51I will save them not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses
- 10:58and horsemen, but I, the Lord their God will save them.
- 11:02So right when I read that this morning, I thought, OK, not by
- 11:06sword, bow, battle, horses, horsemen, none of those things.
- 11:10They aren't going to be saved by that, but I, the Lord their God,
- 11:15will save them. Does that make you think of
- 11:18anything? To me, it made me think of Jesus
- 11:22and I know that so that we're talking about ultimate later on
- 11:26prophecy. But again, history repeats
- 11:29itself there. You'll see this in Scripture
- 11:32like something maybe a foreshadowing, but throughout
- 11:36prophecy, all prophecy tends to show Jesus or point to Jesus.
- 11:42And that's where I mean, that's what I saw when I what I read.
- 11:47When I read this, that's what came to my mind.
- 11:50OK, after she had weaned Lo Ruhama, Ruhama Gomer had another
- 11:57son. Then the Lord said, call him Lo
- 12:00Amim a me, which means not my people, for you are not my
- 12:08people, and I am not your God. Yet the Israelites will be like
- 12:15the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted in
- 12:21the place where it was said to them.
- 12:24You are not my people. They will be called children of
- 12:28the living God. The people of Judah and the
- 12:31people of Israel will come together.
- 12:34They will appoint one leader and will come up out of the land,
- 12:40for great will be the day of Jezreel.
- 12:43That's the end of chapter 1. So again, I think this one
- 12:47leader is Jesus Christ, Yeshua the Messiah, and the people of
- 12:55Judah and Israel will be brought together by Him.
- 12:59I, you know that both of the kingdoms were separated and I
- 13:03don't really know what happened after that.
- 13:06They've just had different leaders of Israel, but you know,
- 13:11no kings of Israel. And I believe that when Jesus
- 13:16returns, that's going to be the one, the one leader that unites
- 13:20all of Israel. And it's, I want to read that
- 13:24again because throughout time there's been persecution of the
- 13:28Israelites and there's been, I mean, think about the World War,
- 13:32World War 2, and think about what happened on October 7th.
- 13:37There's a lot of it in just what's happening right now
- 13:40between Israel and Iran. And there's a desire of the
- 13:46people surrounding Israel to exterminate Israel.
- 13:51And there's no question about that.
- 13:53It's openly spoken of by the leader, the current leader of
- 13:57Iran. And so you think about
- 14:01throughout time, even God himself is aggravated with
- 14:05Israel and he always leaves a remnant because he promised that
- 14:12the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore.
- 14:15So God, if he does something, he will stand by that.
- 14:19So that doesn't necessarily mean that every single Israelite will
- 14:24never die. That doesn't mean it.
- 14:26We obviously know that because the Israelites have been killed
- 14:29over the years. But what that does mean, and
- 14:32what I think this means is this refers to the Millennium.
- 14:35And I believe that the Millennium is really the purpose
- 14:39of that is for God's chosen people, for God's chosen people
- 14:43to repopulate during a time of peace.
- 14:46We will not have peace until Jesus comes back and reigns as
- 14:51king. Until then, there will be wars
- 14:54and rumors of wars, as Jesus said, and all the way up until
- 14:58the time that Jesus returns. So, but during this Millennium
- 15:03time frame is when I believe that God will fulfill its
- 15:07promise to Israel and they will multiply and be like the sand on
- 15:14the seashore that cannot be measured or counted in the
- 15:18place. And I'll read this again in that
- 15:20in the place where it was said to them, you are not my people.
- 15:23They will be called children of the living God.
- 15:26So they'll be called children of the living God because God, you
- 15:29know, lives, he still lives and also because they will see
- 15:32Jesus, they will experience Jesus.
- 15:35That's what I believe the people of Judah and the people of
- 15:38Israel will come together. They will appoint one leader and
- 15:41will come up out of the land for great will be the day of
- 15:45Jezreel. So that is chapter 1.
- 15:48I'll read the questions and answers for chapter 1 and then
- 15:53we'll see if we can keep going our saved the rest for another
- 15:56day. Why would God tell a godly man
- 15:59to marry an adulteress? God called other prophets to
- 16:03integrate their lives into the messages they proclaimed, and
- 16:08there's examples of that through Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel.
- 16:12Yet no prophet endured what Hosea endured.
- 16:17Hosea risk losing everything, family, friends, reputation and
- 16:21self respect. But God was saying through
- 16:24Hosea's marriage, Wake up Israel.
- 16:29Hosea's love for his unfaithful wife demonstrated God's love for
- 16:34his unfaithful people. Like Job, Hosea was called to
- 16:40walk a very difficult path in life.
- 16:43But also like Job, it was through his pain and suffering
- 16:47that Hosea's intimacy with God grew.
- 16:51Did Hosea's wife already have children when he married her?
- 16:55There was a strong possibility that Gomer was a prostitute who
- 16:59had borne children out of wedlock with unknown fathers.
- 17:03These children might have also been the offspring of an
- 17:06adulterous relationship after Hosea married Gomer.
- 17:12What is the significance of the name Jezreel?
- 17:15Jehu, King of Israel from 841 to 814 BC, had engineered the
- 17:22slaughter of the descendants of Ahab at Jezreel in fulfillment
- 17:27of the prophecy of Elijah that's found in First Kings chapter 21
- 17:33and 2nd Kings chapter 10. So Jezreel had become a picture
- 17:37of judgement as well as a warning to heed God's prophets.
- 17:43Why choose such odd names for children?
- 17:46The Israelites often named children to reflect the
- 17:49circumstances surrounding their conception in birth.
- 17:52But the names God selected were unusual even by the standards of
- 17:57Hosea's Jewish culture culture. God chose these names to send a
- 18:01message about the consequences of sin.
- 18:05Wouldn't a name that means not love harm a child's self esteem?
- 18:11Perhaps, but probably not any more than the pain of having a
- 18:15mother like Gomer, who later abandoned her husband and
- 18:19children to live with another man.
- 18:22Since Hosea was committed to demonstrating God's
- 18:25unconditional love, he probably showed more love to Lo Ruhama
- 18:31than Gomer did. This continues to demonstrate
- 18:34the terrible consequences of unfaithfulness to God.
- 18:38It contrasts with God's promise to call the Israelites children
- 18:43of the living God. How could Jezreel be a picture
- 18:46of something good? The events of Jezreel pictured
- 18:49judgment. However, the word Jezreel
- 18:52literally means God scatters a picture of scattering seed for
- 18:57planting. Planting was a positive image
- 19:00because it anticipated a harvest.
- 19:04So that's interesting when it talks about a harvest because
- 19:07think about this. When Jesus returns, he sends his
- 19:10angels to gather his elect, his chosen ones, the ones who had
- 19:14prepared for him. So that is a harvest.
- 19:19And then there's also the harvest of judgment.
- 19:22So first Jesus has the angels gather his elect, then the
- 19:28remaining will be harvested also, but they will be receiving
- 19:33God's wrath. So there's there's essentially 2
- 19:37harvest and we certainly want to be in the one that is not wrath.
- 19:43So if you become a believer, if you are born again and have the
- 19:49Holy Spirit and remain close connected to God, it is said
- 19:57that we are not appointed to wrath.
- 19:59So we will not be that second harvest.
- 20:02That is the winepress that's crushing.
- 20:04It talks about that in the Book of Revelation, so.
- 20:08Anyway, that I'm just going to conclude because I know these
- 20:11podcasts tend to get a little bit long.
- 20:12So this one I'm going to stop after Charter One and then the
- 20:16next podcast will start on Charter 2.
