Speaker 1: The season with Peter Schreeger as a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with my Heart Radio. Welcome everybody to
• 0:24
Speaker 1: another episode of the Season with Peter Schreeger. I'm Peter Schreeger.
• 0:28
Speaker 1: I host Good Morning Football in the NFL network every
• 0:31
Speaker 1: single morning Monday to Friday from seven at ten AM,
• 0:35
Speaker 1: and then I do the Fox NFL Kickoff out in
• 0:38
Speaker 1: Los Angeles on the weekends. And it is now week fifteen,
• 0:43
Speaker 1: and I feel like we're figuring some things out with
• 0:46
Speaker 1: some teams, but there's still a lot to be figured out.
• 0:50
Speaker 1: And as we do this podcast, it's a weekly one
• 0:52
Speaker 1: and it's week after weekend, we're trying to tell the
• 0:54
Speaker 1: story of the season. I still don't have a lot
• 0:57
Speaker 1: of answers in my producer here, Aaron jan Kaufman. Aaron,
• 1:01
Speaker 1: do you feel like this thing is just completely wide open?
• 1:04
Speaker 1: Like I do. Yeah. I feel like even this weekend
• 1:08
Speaker 1: there were some games that I was like, Oh, yeah,
• 1:09
Speaker 1: the Dolphins are gonna win, that's gonna be the division,
• 1:12
Speaker 1: Like the fight is going to be there with Buffalo
• 1:14
Speaker 1: in Miami. And No, there's so many things that are
• 1:16
Speaker 1: still open. Uh. We were just talking about a couple
• 1:19
Speaker 1: of teams that like, there's there's a lot of games left.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: I'm looking at the schedule for week fifteen, and we'll
• 1:25
Speaker 1: get into the Saturday tripleheader. I will be on the
• 1:29
Speaker 1: sidelines as the sideline reporter for Dolphins at Bills. I
• 1:34
Speaker 1: am wildly, wildly unprepared for what to wear on that sideline.
• 1:39
Speaker 1: I have not thought that through, and I will have
• 1:41
Speaker 1: to pack something. Um. I also am wildly, wildly confident
• 1:46
Speaker 1: that I will be eating my weight in Buffalo wings
• 1:49
Speaker 1: when I arrive on Friday, and thus will be waddling
• 1:52
Speaker 1: around the field and six layers of clothing trying to
• 1:55
Speaker 1: concentrate on football while I'm wondering where the nearest toilet is.
• 1:59
Speaker 1: I will also, um say this, that's just one of
• 2:02
Speaker 1: the games, like Giants Commanders, two teams that are seven
• 2:07
Speaker 1: five and one on Sunday night. Awesome game, Lions at Jets,
• 2:11
Speaker 1: awesome game, Titans at Chargers, awesome games. Suddenly Patriots at Raiders,
• 2:18
Speaker 1: very interesting game. And if you want to talk about
• 2:21
Speaker 1: two teams going in the wrong directions, like all right,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: we've got the Vikings who just lost again and you're like,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: all right, like what's up with those guys? And then
• 2:32
Speaker 1: I go over to the other teams in the NFC
• 2:34
Speaker 1: and it's like, all right, well, the Cowboys, they they
• 2:36
Speaker 1: might have the wins, but they almost lost to the Texans.
• 2:38
Speaker 1: And now they play the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Like really
• 2:40
Speaker 1: cool slate a lot of games, um, and I'm excited
• 2:44
Speaker 1: for it. I don't have all the answers, but I
• 2:46
Speaker 1: do know this. Patrick Mahomes pulled one out of his
• 2:49
Speaker 1: ass again, and I love that pass. It was one
• 2:51
Speaker 1: of the coolest passes we will see. And Baker Mayfield
• 2:55
Speaker 1: did something that we've never seen in NFL history showing
• 2:58
Speaker 1: up thirty six hours before a game and winning an
• 3:01
Speaker 1: NFL game as a starting quarterback and doing it without
• 3:04
Speaker 1: any false starts or any delay games. That's just the intro.
• 3:07
Speaker 1: Let's get to the four downs, Aaron, All right, here
• 3:09
Speaker 1: we go. First down. You were there on the sideline
• 3:13
Speaker 1: this weekend for the Eagles. You got to see him
• 3:14
Speaker 1: up close and personal. Are they as good in person
• 3:17
Speaker 1: as they look on TV? Alright? So the Eagles have
• 3:20
Speaker 1: something that I don't know if it's been coined before,
• 3:22
Speaker 1: but they're like, get off the bus, scary. What do
• 3:27
Speaker 1: I mean by that? I watched this team get off
• 3:29
Speaker 1: the bus on Sunday. I was there at nine am.
• 3:31
Speaker 1: I was interviewing Sirianni for the Fox pregame show, right
• 3:34
Speaker 1: outside their locker room. And they come off the bus
• 3:38
Speaker 1: and it's six ft eight, three fifty pounds Jordan my
• 3:41
  Speaker 1: Alatta and he's followed by h I don't know, and
• 3:44
Speaker 1: Dominican Sue, and then Fletcher Cox and then Lane Johnson
• 3:48
Speaker 1: and then Javon Hargrave and then Brandon Graham and they're
• 3:52
Speaker 1: just the biggest, most physical looking team coming off the bus.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: And then they've got these guys like a J. Brown,
• 3:59
  Speaker 1: who's a who's an all pro talent, and you've got
• 4:02
Speaker 1: Davante Smith who's not get off the bus scary, but
• 4:05
Speaker 1: then you get him in that uniform him and he's
• 4:07
Speaker 1: downright frightening. And of course you've got the quarterback in
• 4:10
Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts who was wearing like a magenta blazer and
• 4:13
Speaker 1: it just looks to look it comes in, does not smile,
• 4:16
Speaker 1: and then they go out there and it's you know,
• 4:18
Speaker 1: focus on the game, and you know this could be
• 4:20
Speaker 1: a trap game. You've got two games ahead of your
• 4:22
Speaker 1: air with the Bears, and then the Cowboys that are
• 4:24
Speaker 1: big games and they just kick the snot out of
• 4:27
Speaker 1: the Giants in the Giants building, and it was like
• 4:29
Speaker 1: from go. They had two sacks on the first three
• 4:33
Speaker 1: plays of the game. They ran all over the Giants
• 4:35
Speaker 1: Smiles Sanders had a hundred forty four yards and then
• 4:38
Speaker 1: you know, the passing game was going to the defense. Electric.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: That's what scares me about this Eagles team. Last week
• 4:46
Speaker 1: they played Derrick Henry and the Mighty Mighty Derrick Henry.
• 4:49
Speaker 1: You know, running game, he runs alert thirty yards. This
• 4:52
Speaker 1: week at Sae Kwon Barkley, he's gonna play. I don't
• 4:54
Speaker 1: think Sae Kwon did anything in this game. Instead, it's
• 4:56
Speaker 1: just blowouts. They're rolling. That seems good. And I think
• 5:01
Speaker 1: they're as deep as any team in the league if
• 5:03
Speaker 1: you go through all the different levels. And I also think, uh,
• 5:07
Speaker 1: they're as mentally tough as any team. Like they are
• 5:09
Speaker 1: so focused, so dialed in. They didn't treat that like
• 5:11
Speaker 1: it was some surprise or some Super Bowl win. They
• 5:14
Speaker 1: were like, oh, yeah, the Giants will beat the Giants
• 5:15
Speaker 1: and will be whoever's in front of us next. Really
• 5:18
Speaker 1: disciplined team, really good team, really well coached. Uh get
• 5:22
Speaker 1: off the bus. Scary. That's the Philadelphia Eagles speaking of
• 5:25
Speaker 1: getting off the bus. Uh, you know it's a few
• 5:27
Speaker 1: days removed, and we know you have some connections in
• 5:30
Speaker 1: Los Angeles. What do you think about Baker Mayfield. Let
• 5:34
Speaker 1: me unempty the bag a little bit on just how
• 5:36
Speaker 1: crazy this was. So he gets there thirty six hours
• 5:40
Speaker 1: at a time. First of all, the story is true.
• 5:43
Speaker 1: He didn't have any knowledge of it, but he booked
• 5:46
Speaker 1: a flight to l A just in case that they
• 5:48
Speaker 1: they picked him up off the waiver wire. He thought
• 5:50
Speaker 1: logically it would make sense. He didn't have any contact
• 5:52
Speaker 1: with the Rams, he can't legally, and they do put
• 5:55
Speaker 1: the waiver wire claiming on him. They get them, and
• 5:57
Speaker 1: the thought was, all right, maybe he'll play a few
• 6:00
Speaker 1: snaps then, Like before the game, I think McVeigh was
• 6:03
Speaker 1: really tempted just to start him because they had a
• 6:04
Speaker 1: conversation like we'll go to it instead, they start Wolford.
• 6:08
Speaker 1: It's one drive and they put in Baker. Now here's
• 6:10
Speaker 1: the cool part. So Baker Mayfield comes from you know, Carolina,
• 6:15
Speaker 1: but before that, Cleveland where Bill Callahan was the offensive
• 6:19
Speaker 1: line coach, and some of those same concepts are what
• 6:21
Speaker 1: they do in UH in l A. As Kevin Carberry,
• 6:25
Speaker 1: who's the offensive line coach for the Rams, was was
• 6:28
Speaker 1: under Callahan in Washington. All right, that seems very like,
• 6:32
Speaker 1: you know, tangent or whatever. But he knew the concepts,
• 6:34
Speaker 1: but isn't the language. So the offensive coaches UH put
• 6:39
Speaker 1: together a wristband for Baker Mayfield and it was a
• 6:41
Speaker 1: detailed like sixteen plays on his wristband with the exact
• 6:45
Speaker 1: verbiage of what they call it in l A. And
• 6:47
Speaker 1: the hope was they would call it into Baker, he
• 6:50
Speaker 1: would look at his wrist band and he'd be able
• 6:52
Speaker 1: to relay it to the to the huddle and then
• 6:53
Speaker 1: they'll go play. The game starts and Sean McVeigh has
• 6:57
Speaker 1: access in Baker Mayfield's ear from the forty second mark
• 7:02
Speaker 1: on the play clock to the fifteen second mark, so
• 7:04
Speaker 1: for thirty seconds he can speak to him in his ear.
• 7:07
Speaker 1: He can get in his ear and tell him everything.
• 7:09
Speaker 1: They didn't use the wristband once McVeigh would tell him
• 7:12
Speaker 1: what he wanted, so we could say like we're gonna
• 7:14
Speaker 1: go fly pattern here, or we're gonna go UH four
• 7:17
Speaker 1: verts whatever. And then after telling him what the play
• 7:20
Speaker 1: call is McVeigh would tell Baker what they call it
• 7:23
Speaker 1: in the offense. So he's like, four verts, which just
• 7:26
Speaker 1: means four guys going deep. Okay, we call that this.
• 7:30
Speaker 1: Then he goes back in the huddle so the offensive
• 7:32
Speaker 1: lineman could hear it, and he's like, all right, we're
• 7:34
Speaker 1: gonna run this which is what you guys call this play? Right, Like,
• 7:37
Speaker 1: that's what you call it? Okay, so we're gonna run
• 7:39
Speaker 1: that um and that's what you and they all are
• 7:41
Speaker 1: nodding and they're like, hey, yeah, that's that's what we
• 7:43
Speaker 1: call it. They get to the center, they get to
• 7:45
Speaker 1: the snap. Zero delayed games, zero false starts, and a
• 7:49
Speaker 1: fourteen point come back to do what they did nine yards,
• 7:53
Speaker 1: no timeouts without knowing the name of any of the
• 7:56
Speaker 1: plays on the offense is some of the most absurd
• 7:59
Speaker 1: stuff you'll ever hear. Now, you could say a million
• 8:02
Speaker 1: things about the Raiders defense, how they had dumb penalties,
• 8:04
Speaker 1: and you know what is Jerry Hillary slapping the ball
• 8:07
Speaker 1: out of Baker's hands for why are they doing past interference?
• 8:09
Speaker 1: And wow, the Raiders gave him the game. I don't
• 8:11
Speaker 1: care who that was against what Baker Mayfield did last
• 8:14
Speaker 1: Thursday night. Was was was in the face of all convention,
• 8:18
Speaker 1: like all convention about what we've learned about football, how
• 8:21
Speaker 1: it's the most uh you know, difficult thing to understand
• 8:24
Speaker 1: and quarterback is it takes years and years to find.
• 8:27
Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield walked off a bus, had one walk through
• 8:31
Speaker 1: practice uh twenty place uh the day before, and then
• 8:34
Speaker 1: was able to run an offense and did it without
• 8:37
Speaker 1: any you know, personal miscuse, without any penalties, and they
• 8:41
Speaker 1: won the game. I don't know if they win another
• 8:43
Speaker 1: game all season, I don't care. That was one of
• 8:44
Speaker 1: the coolest things we'll see all season long. Alright, Peter,
• 8:47
Speaker 1: third down, like you said, you're head in the Buffalo
• 8:50
Speaker 1: for this Saturday. I think it's supposed to be six
• 8:52
Speaker 1: inches of snow. Are you ready? Yeah? It's been everything
• 8:55
Speaker 1: from they said one inch and then they said six inches.
• 8:59
Speaker 1: Now they're saying it's like four inches, and then they're
• 9:00
Speaker 1: saying it's gonna be ten to twenty degrees. And the
• 9:03
Speaker 1: word was lake effect. I don't know that means. Aaron,
• 9:07
Speaker 1: are you from Buffalo? I know you're a Bills fan, Like,
• 9:09
Speaker 1: what's your Buffalo ties? So I'm not from Buffalo. My
• 9:12
Speaker 1: family is My dad's side of the family is from Buffalo.
• 9:14
Speaker 1: My dad grew up there, but I used to go there.
• 9:16
Speaker 1: You know, we would like do Christmas at home and
• 9:18
Speaker 1: then drive up to Buffalo from Connecticut. Okay, so I
• 9:22
Speaker 1: am familiar with snow and cold weather, but I don't
• 9:26
Speaker 1: have a ton of Saturdays in December Buffalo experience. But yeah,
• 9:32
Speaker 1: just pack a hat, a scarf, some gloves, some you know,
• 9:35
Speaker 1: long underwear. I think you'll be Okay, Okay, I'm gonna
• 9:38
Speaker 1: do it. I've done cold weather games before. I worked
• 9:40
Speaker 1: a Seahawks at Vikings playoff game when the Vikings had
• 9:44
Speaker 1: those couple of years where they were playing outside at
• 9:47
Speaker 1: the University of Minnesota Stadium, and that was the famous
• 9:50
Speaker 1: Blair Walsh game. That one was the coldest game I've
• 9:51
Speaker 1: ever been to. I was outside for that one. I
• 9:54
Speaker 1: did a Packers forty Niners playoff game where I was
• 9:57
Speaker 1: roaming the sidelines and it was a Saturday night in
• 9:59
Speaker 1: Greenbair or Sunday night in Green Bay, and uh Kaepernick
• 10:03
Speaker 1: came out sleeveless, and I was like, all right, if
• 10:05
Speaker 1: he's playing sleeve this, why am I crying with my
• 10:08
Speaker 1: eight layers and my giant jacket from Cabilla's I'll be okay,
• 10:14
Speaker 1: I kidd it. I kid around earlier about the eating situation.
• 10:17
  Speaker 1: I have this I don't know if it's a this
• 10:20
Speaker 1: is my therapy couch. I don't know what it is,
• 10:22
Speaker 1: but like I have this like feeling that I need
• 10:24
Speaker 1: to go nuts with the wings and like it's my obligation,
• 10:27
Speaker 1: it's my pilgrimage, Like I've got to go and if
• 10:29
Speaker 1: if I'm getting I want to try Buffalo wings that
• 10:31
Speaker 1: are great, but I have this like feeling I'm gonna
• 10:34
Speaker 1: I'm gonna overdo it. Um, do you have a wings place?
• 10:36
Speaker 1: Do you have any knowledge of that stuff? Or is
• 10:38
Speaker 1: this one of those we've got a kind of crowdsource.
• 10:40
Speaker 1: So I actually, you know, I haven't been to Buffalo
• 10:44
Speaker 1: and probably like ten years, but I do have a
• 10:47
Speaker 1: good list of some of the top places that you
• 10:49
Speaker 1: know are kind of like if you're going there and
• 10:52
Speaker 1: you want some wings, I have a good variety for you. Okay,
• 10:55
Speaker 1: do you have it? Do you have it handy? Yeah? Yeah? Alright,
• 10:57
Speaker 1: so let on because I'll pick one right now based
• 10:59
Speaker 1: on this list. One of them is Lennova, another is
• 11:04
Speaker 1: bar Bill and then to it like kind of the
• 11:07
Speaker 1: ones that are always pitted against each other. I think
• 11:09
Speaker 1: our anchor bar and Duff's. Now. One of the great
• 11:13
Speaker 1: things is you can go to pretty much any of
• 11:15
Speaker 1: these wings spots. You don't have to just get wings.
• 11:18
Speaker 1: You can also order a pizza. You can also you know,
• 11:20
Speaker 1: you can get a whole bunch of stuff, so it
• 11:21
Speaker 1: doesn't have to just be wings at each thing. So
• 11:23
  Speaker 1: I don't know how many days you're there. I don't
• 11:25
Speaker 1: know if you can carve out enough time for lunch
• 11:28
Speaker 1: a couple, it's gonna be one meal. I want to
• 11:30
Speaker 1: fly on Friday. Do good morning football. I'm gonna fly
• 11:33
Speaker 1: on Friday, and we've got meetings that Oh there's actual
• 11:37
Speaker 1: football game going on. I probably have to worry about
• 11:38
Speaker 1: that at some point. Um, but I do want to
• 11:41
Speaker 1: get toys. Now. I've heard about this Lenovo. Uh is
• 11:44
Speaker 1: it Lenovo or Lenova Nova? Nova? Lenovo is like a
• 11:48
Speaker 1: laptop right like was like in the Dell computer days.
• 11:51
  Speaker 1: I've got a Lenovo. Um. Sorry, if they're a big
• 11:53
Speaker 1: sponsor to I heart radio guys, apologize. Maybe we can
• 11:56
Speaker 1: get some free stuff. Um. Then I heard about this
• 11:59
Speaker 1: bar bill that's where Kyle Brandt went last year when
• 12:01
Speaker 1: he went. And Kyle is kind of the resident Bill's guy.
• 12:03
Speaker 1: I feel like I'd be kind of going in on
• 12:05
Speaker 1: his terrible tory if I went to bar. But he
• 12:07
Speaker 1: also came back and he was like, I had the honey, ginger, salmon, pineapple,
• 12:11
Speaker 1: fruit like fruit tasting one. I'm like, what is that
• 12:13
Speaker 1: I got? Give me buffalo wings. I don't do all
• 12:15
Speaker 1: that stuff. So I think I'm gonna do Lenova because
• 12:20
Speaker 1: I think there's an anchor bar in the airport. There's
• 12:22
  Speaker 1: a there's a restaurant in the airport that's a no.
• 12:24
Speaker 1: And then I think, uh, Duff's I've been hearing about
• 12:27
Speaker 1: since my friends went to like Sunny Buffalo. My friend
• 12:30
Speaker 1: Scott Berman, my summer camp buddy went to went to
• 12:33
Speaker 1: Sunny Buffalo and he was big on Duffs and duffs
• 12:36
Speaker 1: and duffs and always talking duffs. And I feel like
• 12:39
Speaker 1: I want to try something different. So I'm making my
• 12:41
Speaker 1: choice right now. Lenova. Lenova is the choice. I'm going
• 12:45
Speaker 1: to alert them, um. I hope they listened to the
• 12:48
Speaker 1: podcast and then I'll give my full review next week. Perfect.
• 12:51
Speaker 1: I'm excited. Alright. Fourth down we like to shout someone
• 12:55
Speaker 1: out and I want to give a shout out. Uh,
• 12:59
Speaker 1: let me get on my soapbox here. I'm gonna get emotional. UM.
• 13:02
Speaker 1: I really really like and respect Jared Goff, and I
• 13:05
Speaker 1: think what he's on over the last year and a
• 13:07
Speaker 1: half is pretty cool stuff. In a world of social
• 13:10
Speaker 1: media and online bullying and everybody having an opinion and
• 13:14
Speaker 1: everyone being a Twitter keyboard, tough guy, Jared Goff was
• 13:19
Speaker 1: a punchline. Jared Goff was traded, along with two first
• 13:23
Speaker 1: round picks and a third round pick to the Detroit
• 13:25
Speaker 1: Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford goes on
• 13:29
Speaker 1: and wins a Super Bowl with the Rams, and Golf
• 13:32
Speaker 1: is on one of the worst teams in football, and
• 13:34
Speaker 1: they start off one in six and it's like, we're
• 13:36
Speaker 1: gonna be moving on in Detroit. They're gonna get the
• 13:37
Speaker 1: first pick in the draft, they're gonna fire everybody, they're
• 13:39
Speaker 1: gonna get a new quarterback, and Jared Goff is gonna
• 13:42
Speaker 1: be some backup for the rest of his career. Instead,
• 13:45
Speaker 1: Jared Golf is having not only a Pro Bowl season,
• 13:47
Speaker 1: but he's one of the top I'd say I would
• 13:50
Speaker 1: say he's the number two quarterback in the entire NFC
• 13:52
Speaker 1: this season, I would say it's Jalen Hurts and it's
• 13:54
Speaker 1: Jared Golf. And he's eighth in the league in passing yards,
• 13:58
Speaker 1: he's fit in passing touchdowns, he's all over all the
• 14:01
Speaker 1: PFF advanced stuff. And they're winning games. And the Lions
• 14:04
Speaker 1: are like this awesome story. And you know, they say
• 14:07
Speaker 1: that comparison is the thief of joy. That's a statement.
• 14:11
Speaker 1: I really think it's cool because you start looking at
• 14:13
Speaker 1: your career and you look at other people are doing,
• 14:15
Speaker 1: and you start looking at your friends from college and
• 14:17
Speaker 1: what they're doing. If you're Jared Golf, if you wanted
• 14:19
Speaker 1: to compare situations, you were the number one overall picked
• 14:23
Speaker 1: for the Los Angeles Rams. He won multiple playoff games.
• 14:26
Speaker 1: You beat Drew Brees in an NFC Championship game in
• 14:29
Speaker 1: his building. You went to the Super Bowl, you were
• 14:32
Speaker 1: given an extension by the Rams. You you were everything
• 14:35
Speaker 1: living in southern California, and you were traded to what
• 14:39
Speaker 1: was a graveyard for NFL players, the Detroit Lions, whoever
• 14:43
Speaker 1: won since ninety seven, and you were forgotten, and if
• 14:47
Speaker 1: not forgotten, you were dismissed. And now like how what
• 14:51
Speaker 1: a cool story? Like, what a cool story? And I'll
• 14:53
Speaker 1: tell you the best part about what I love about golf.
• 14:56
Speaker 1: He hasn't said a peep. He didn't bitch, he didn't moan,
• 15:00
Speaker 1: he didn't complain when everyone was saying that, oh McVeigh,
• 15:03
Speaker 1: you know, couldn't get over the top with golf. He
• 15:05
Speaker 1: didn't have some pithy respond. It's about mcphig's game planning
• 15:07
Speaker 1: the Super Bowl that day. Nothing nothing but class all
• 15:11
Speaker 1: the way through. And I know the guys in l
• 15:13
Speaker 1: A really well, as we mentioned already, and I know
• 15:16
Speaker 1: they really like Jared Golf, and I think they're really
• 15:18
Speaker 1: happy for him. Um, that's a rare trade that might
• 15:20
Speaker 1: have worked out for both sides because I don't think
• 15:23
Speaker 1: the Rams in a million years would give up anything
• 15:25
Speaker 1: for what they got last year's Super Bowl run. It's
• 15:28
Speaker 1: once in a lifetime stuff, and Stafford led him there.
• 15:31
Speaker 1: But the Lions, I don't think they were winning a
• 15:33
Speaker 1: super Bowl last year with Matthew Stafford. I think they're
• 15:35
Speaker 1: pretty happy with Jared Golf and they'll have two first
• 15:38
Speaker 1: round picks in a third round pick to go with it. Uh,
• 15:40
Speaker 1: Jared Golf, we see you, and not only do our respect,
• 15:42
Speaker 1: your your play on the field. I love the way
• 15:45
Speaker 1: you've handled the last eighteen months and the way you've
• 15:47
Speaker 1: been able to block things out and just focus on yourself,
• 15:50
Speaker 1: your team, and now you're getting all the success for it.
• 15:52
Speaker 1: Very cool story, Jared Golf. That's the kind of stuff
• 15:54
Speaker 1: I love in the NFL. All right, Aaron, fourth down,
• 15:57
Speaker 1: you get a shout out to have you giving it
• 15:59
Speaker 1: to I'm gonna do another number one drafted quarterback. I'm
• 16:01
Speaker 1: gonna do Trevor Lawrence. Yeah, talk about it. The Jags.
• 16:05
Speaker 1: You know, there's there's like Josh Allen had Stefon Diggs
• 16:09
Speaker 1: come in that really helped his progression. H Jalen Hurts
• 16:12
Speaker 1: had a j. Brown come in, and Lawrence really hasn't
• 16:15
Speaker 1: had the big marquee receiver. I mean, they signed Christian
• 16:18
Speaker 1: Kirk this offseason to a big contract that, regardless of
• 16:23
Speaker 1: whether or not you think the money was the right amount, um,
• 16:26
Speaker 1: Lawrence doesn't have like the guy. He's got a bunch
• 16:32
Speaker 1: of different guys. He's got Kirk, He's got z Jones,
• 16:35
Speaker 1: Evan Ingram, Marvin Jones. This is not like Murders row
• 16:38
Speaker 1: of receivers, but they're they're playing really well for him.
• 16:42
Speaker 1: He's shown so much growth in just the last month
• 16:44
Speaker 1: even um and they may not win the a f
• 16:47
Speaker 1: C South, but they're nipping at the titans heels and
• 16:51
Speaker 1: this may not be their year, but I think it's
• 16:54
Speaker 1: it's clear going forward the next few seasons. The Jaguars
• 16:57
Speaker 1: are on the right path for like them taking over
• 17:00
Speaker 1: the AC We got a quarterback coach and Doug Peterson
• 17:04
Speaker 1: like that was Urban Meyer was a disaster last years
• 17:06
Speaker 1: ahead coach. I say that objectively, it didn't work. He
• 17:09
Speaker 1: gets fired midway through the season and it's like, all right,
• 17:11
Speaker 1: let's start from scratch again. I would almost give last
• 17:13
Speaker 1: year of Mulligan and I would say this. Titans have
• 17:16
Speaker 1: lost three straight. They look rudderless. The last two weeks
• 17:18
Speaker 1: have been have been, you know, crazy, with the with
• 17:22
Speaker 1: the firing of a general manager, with the loss to
• 17:24
Speaker 1: the Eagles. Within the loss here, uh, you know at
• 17:27
Speaker 1: home to the Jaguars. There seven and six and the
• 17:31
Speaker 1: Jaguars are five and eight. There's four weeks left. There
• 17:34
Speaker 1: is a chance that the Jaguars can hurdle the Titans,
• 17:38
Speaker 1: but the Jags are gonna have to beat the Cowboys
• 17:39
Speaker 1: this weekend. I mean in recent memory. I don't have
• 17:43
  Speaker 1: any I remember I all these games. I know, I've
• 17:47
Speaker 1: got this crazy bank of like who called the games.
• 17:50
Speaker 1: I'm trying to go through it. This is the first time,
• 17:54
Speaker 1: I think in probably five ten years, that Fox is
• 17:57
Speaker 1: setting their A crew, which is Burkhart Olson, Aaron Andrews
• 18:03
Speaker 1: to Jacksonville. They're calling Jaguars Cowboys. That's obviously because the
• 18:07
Speaker 1: Cowboys bring his national audience and it's an early window
• 18:09
Speaker 1: and whatever you whatever you want to say, but Jaguars
• 18:12
  Speaker 1: are deserved of it. I don't. I didn't roll my
• 18:14
Speaker 1: eyes or say what when I saw that the Jaguars
• 18:16
Speaker 1: were getting the Fox A game treatment. That's pretty cool.
• 18:18
Speaker 1: And Aaron, I think a spot on. I think Trevor
• 18:20
Speaker 1: Lawrence is leading the way. That's great stuff. Aaron um
• 18:23
Speaker 1: this week on the season with Peter Schrager, We're gonna
• 18:26
Speaker 1: have an awesome guest. And he's he's one of my
• 18:29
Speaker 1: favorite guys in the league. He might not be a
• 18:30
Speaker 1: household name yet. He's the running backs coach at the
• 18:34
Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. He's also the assistant head coach to Nick Sirianni.
• 18:37
Speaker 1: He's got a really cool path. His name is Jamal Singleton.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: Jamal played at air Force, was one of the great
• 18:42
Speaker 1: players in air Force history. He went coached in college,
• 18:45
Speaker 1: then he bounced around the NFL a little bit. Two
• 18:47
Speaker 1: years ago he joined the Eagles coaching staff. That the
• 18:50
Speaker 1: number one team in the NFL right now. They've got
• 18:52
Speaker 1: a great running back in Miles Sanders, and I think
• 18:55
Speaker 1: you really are gonna get to know and like Jamal Singleton.
• 18:58
Speaker 1: Let's bring him on the podcast right after this. Joining
• 19:05
Speaker 1: us is our guest this week on the season with
• 19:07
Speaker 1: Peter Schreeger. Is the running backs coach and the assistant
• 19:12
Speaker 1: head coach in Philadelphia, the number one team in the NFC.
• 19:16
Speaker 1: He's an awesome dude. He's been around the league, he
• 19:18
Speaker 1: was in the college game, and he's got a great
• 19:19
Speaker 1: story to tell. Ladies, gentlemen, let's welcome in. Jamal Singleton's
• 19:24
Speaker 1: doing great, man. Thanks for having me. That interrom is
• 19:26
Speaker 1: pretty cool. Make me sound better than I really am.
• 19:28
Speaker 1: It's not bad, right I think your story is really cool.
• 19:31
Speaker 1: But this team right now is the is the main
• 19:33
Speaker 1: story for everybody. The Eagles run game has been among
• 19:38
Speaker 1: the best in the league for years, and the last
• 19:40
Speaker 1: two seasons you've been running that running backs room. But
• 19:42
Speaker 1: right now, Miles Sanders is having his first one thousand
• 19:45
Speaker 1: yards season. He had a hundred and forty four and
• 19:47
Speaker 1: a tug the other day against the Giants. What are
• 19:50
Speaker 1: you seeing from Miles Sanders on a day to day
• 19:52
Speaker 1: basis That has him stepping up one extra notch. But
• 19:55
Speaker 1: was already a great NFL career, You know, it's it's awesome.
• 19:58
Speaker 1: He came back this season on a mission. There was
• 20:01
Speaker 1: no offense butts about it. I think the way he
• 20:03
Speaker 1: worked in the off season, and I think some of
• 20:05
Speaker 1: that just takes the maturity of own up in this league.
• 20:07
Speaker 1: But he came back fired up. You can see there's
• 20:09
Speaker 1: a little bit of nasty, physical nous to his play
• 20:12
Speaker 1: right now that I think has helped him gain some
• 20:14
Speaker 1: of those extra yards and put himself in position to
• 20:17
Speaker 1: to get some of the accolades he's getting now. But
• 20:18
Speaker 1: you ask him, he's not done yet, right We've got
• 20:21
Speaker 1: a lot left in the tank and we want to
• 20:23
Speaker 1: make sure we keep pushing forward. You know, I was
• 20:25
Speaker 1: talking to coach Sirianni before the game for Fox. We
• 20:28
Speaker 1: did an interview and I said, like this cold, it's winter,
• 20:32
Speaker 1: and this Eagles team it kind of feels like this
• 20:35
Speaker 1: is what you guys were built for. Is there something
• 20:37
Speaker 1: in the culture about these type of games in December,
• 20:40
Speaker 1: cold weather and hopefully January and February as well, no doubt.
• 20:44
Speaker 1: I mean, I think you just look at the heart
• 20:46
Speaker 1: of this city. I mean there's a rugged toughness about
• 20:49
Speaker 1: being here, and I think just our players are have
• 20:51
Speaker 1: kind of adapted to that just with the time here.
• 20:53
Speaker 1: We kind of represent Philadelphia and I think that's what
• 20:56
Speaker 1: we have to be this time of year and really
• 20:58
Speaker 1: throughout the years, that tough, kind of nasty, kind of
• 21:01
Speaker 1: get after people in it. It's really our veteran leadership
• 21:03
Speaker 1: that we have. You see those guys, man, you should
• 21:05
Speaker 1: flet your actually see Kelsey. I mean, those are those
• 21:08
Speaker 1: are tough guys that that you want to go to
• 21:10
Speaker 1: war with. And it's it's great that this is the
• 21:12
Speaker 1: time of year that hey, it's time to go to war.
• 21:15
Speaker 1: You know, your quarterback is twenty four years old. And
• 21:18
Speaker 1: this guy, uh, we knew about the college accolades, but
• 21:21
Speaker 1: he goes in the second round and then he finally
• 21:22
Speaker 1: gets the gig. He does take you to the playoffs
• 21:24
Speaker 1: last year, but there were even questions this offseason, I
• 21:27
Speaker 1: feel like, watching objectively, Jalen Hurts has made a giant leap.
• 21:31
Speaker 1: You tell me, did you see this coming? Did you
• 21:33
Speaker 1: did your coaching staff know that this would be Jalen
• 21:35
Speaker 1: Hurts not only just great leader, a great running quarterback,
• 21:38
Speaker 1: good passer, but potential m v P of the league.
• 21:41
Speaker 1: I think if you know Jalen at all, and I've
• 21:43
Speaker 1: had an interesting perspective of it because when I was
• 21:46
Speaker 1: in college in the college game, I got to see
• 21:48
Speaker 1: him in camps and then actually was when we were
• 21:50
Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl. He was on our team, so he
• 21:52
Speaker 1: was a Senior Bowl quarterback at that point, So I
• 21:54
Speaker 1: had some interaction there and there's just some things that
• 21:57
Speaker 1: I took away personally from that. I watched how he
• 21:59
Speaker 1: interacted with fans. I watched how he worked, I watched
• 22:02
Speaker 1: how he prepared, and then when I got here to
• 22:04
Speaker 1: the Eagles, same guy. I mean, just working and preparing,
• 22:07
Speaker 1: and I think he's just he's gonna will himself to
• 22:10
Speaker 1: do great things. And I think that's what's been great
• 22:12
Speaker 1: about him and this year, and he's only gonna get better.
• 22:15
Speaker 1: He continues to get better. But I mean, come on, now,
• 22:18
Speaker 1: Jalen hurts his ball in this year and it's awesome
• 22:20
Speaker 1: to see it and just to see the supporting cast
• 22:22
Speaker 1: around him, all the guys and the pieces and just
• 22:25
Speaker 1: the team camaraderie that we have. He's a big part
• 22:28
Speaker 1: of that because of how he works day in and
• 22:30
Speaker 1: day out. Like what's he like? Because we see it
• 22:32
Speaker 1: on TV and there's a great shot on the Fox
• 22:34
Speaker 1: broadcast of a j Brown calculin laughing and quiz walkings,
• 22:40
Speaker 1: and there's Jalen Hurts the quarterback amidst those guys, but
• 22:45
Speaker 1: laser focused, no smiles, no goofing. This isn't a blowout
• 22:48
Speaker 1: tony one nothing score and and Jalen's just focused. Is
• 22:52
Speaker 1: at him every day? That is And it's funny because
• 22:55
Speaker 1: I saw that and I had to laugh myself. But
• 22:57
Speaker 1: he is, He's locked in, He's got that laser focus.
• 23:00
Speaker 1: He's got plenty things that are motivating him. Maybe the
• 23:03
Speaker 1: doubters are part of that, and just seeing him he's
• 23:05
Speaker 1: about his business. You go back and I'm not to
• 23:08
Speaker 1: call out a stadium, you know, stadium fell down and
• 23:10
Speaker 1: fans kind of and the man who just standing there, calm,
• 23:13
Speaker 1: cool and collective, and I think that's what allows him
• 23:16
Speaker 1: to continue to grow, to continue to be the leader
• 23:18
Speaker 1: that he is. It's awesome. It's awesome to have a
• 23:20
Speaker 1: young man like that who's doing all the things that
• 23:23
Speaker 1: he's doing, is having the success he's having, and ultimately
• 23:25
Speaker 1: the team is winning the way we are now. All right,
• 23:27
Speaker 1: so you're the running backs coach. We also have this.
• 23:29
Speaker 1: This title is an associate head coach or assistant head coach.
• 23:32
Speaker 1: What's the title? This assistant head coach? Right? All right?
• 23:35
Speaker 1: So what is that? What are those duties? What does
• 23:37
Speaker 1: that mean? Because obviously you've got your own position group
• 23:39
Speaker 1: and those guys live and die and swear by your
• 23:41
Speaker 1: words and your coaching. But then you've got this assistant
• 23:43
Speaker 1: head coaching thing. Just looking at an ORC chart. If
• 23:45
Speaker 1: someone's coming out of college or wants to be a coach,
• 23:48
Speaker 1: what does the assistant head coach in the NFL do?
• 23:50
Speaker 1: If I'm being honest, whatever Nick tells me to do,
• 23:53
Speaker 1: that's exactly what my job is. So it's it does.
• 23:56
Speaker 1: It's like you said, it starts with the room. It
• 23:57
Speaker 1: will always start with the running back room. Those are
• 24:00
Speaker 1: my those guys are my first priority for helping to
• 24:02
Speaker 1: prepare them for game day and all that, and then
• 24:04
Speaker 1: there's just anything that Nick will need from me. You know,
• 24:06
Speaker 1: I have a different background on things, and he bounces
• 24:09
Speaker 1: ideas off me every now and then, and there's certain
• 24:11
Speaker 1: things that we talk about, but it's it starts with
• 24:13
Speaker 1: the running back room and then again, whatever Nick needs
• 24:15
Speaker 1: me to do, I'm ready and willing. What is he
• 24:18
Speaker 1: like Take us through a day with Nick Sirianni because
• 24:21
Speaker 1: he might be on his way to be an NFL
• 24:22
Speaker 1: Coach of the Year, and I still feel like fans
• 24:24
Speaker 1: at home know him for wearing a Philly sweatshirt and
• 24:27
Speaker 1: maybe and beat hat, But like, what's he like as
• 24:30
Speaker 1: a coach? What's he like in those meetings and what's
• 24:32
Speaker 1: he like on those fields in the practices? You know,
• 24:35
Speaker 1: I'll tell you what this is. And being a military
• 24:37
Speaker 1: man and coming from some different organizations, you look at
• 24:40
Speaker 1: kind of what what's what is the team built on?
• 24:42
Speaker 1: What are their core values? And you really saw Nick
• 24:45
Speaker 1: came in with his his core values of what he wanted.
• 24:48
Speaker 1: He wanted a team to connect, he wanted him to compete,
• 24:50
Speaker 1: he wanted to be accountable, he wanted to have a
• 24:52
Speaker 1: good football i Q right, and he wanted to be
• 24:54
Speaker 1: great and fundamentals and those are those are catchphrases in
• 24:58
Speaker 1: some places, right, but he came in and those are
• 25:00
Speaker 1: the epitome of what we do every single day. It's like, hey,
• 25:04
Speaker 1: we need to connect, we need to get to know
• 25:06
Speaker 1: each other. There we need to compete. We got hoops
• 25:08
Speaker 1: up all over this building. I brought my daughter's facilities.
• 25:11
Speaker 1: Basketball hoops everywhere. So I brought my daughter in and
• 25:14
Speaker 1: she's nine years old. She's asking why all the hoops
• 25:16
Speaker 1: that because we compete, doesn't matter what we're doing. We compete.
• 25:19
Speaker 1: And that's just the mindset that he's put in, and
• 25:21
Speaker 1: it's it's amazing. A bunch of much of my coaching
• 25:24
Speaker 1: friends in the in the profession of have reached out
• 25:26
Speaker 1: and the one thing that they've said is like, man,
• 25:29
Speaker 1: it looks like you guys are having so much fun. Yes,
• 25:33
Speaker 1: and of course winning is fun, don't get no doubt.
• 25:35
Speaker 1: But we have an environment here in a culture where
• 25:38
Speaker 1: guys are allowed to be themselves and know how to
• 25:40
Speaker 1: flip the switch and time to go, time to get
• 25:42
Speaker 1: to work. And I think Nick is really the embodiment
• 25:44
  Speaker 1: of that. He's a great dude, he's crazy dude. We've
• 25:47
Speaker 1: seen him on the sideline. He gets excited, he's emotionally
• 25:51
Speaker 1: he runs down the sideline chasing the other day. Come on,
• 25:54
Speaker 1: I mean, if you're a player and you see your
• 25:56
Speaker 1: head coach getting that excited about you doing well, it's
• 25:59
Speaker 1: it's awesome, and it just the whole building feeds off
• 26:01
  Speaker 1: of it, and it's it's it's been a great environment
• 26:04
Speaker 1: here for two years. I mean, we had some low
• 26:05
Speaker 1: times the first year out, and he can just stay true,
• 26:08
Speaker 1: stay true to his process and all that. So I
• 26:11
Speaker 1: got much love for Nick and we're having a great
• 26:12
Speaker 1: time right now, just trying to keep this thing going
• 26:14
Speaker 1: as far as we can take me through that basketball
• 26:17
Speaker 1: hoop philosophy, because I remember going out to Seattle and
• 26:19
Speaker 1: I was at a practice and Pete had one in
• 26:21
Speaker 1: the meeting room, and I said, what's this all about?
• 26:22
Speaker 1: It goes offense, defense, we shoot free throws. But it
• 26:25
Speaker 1: sounds like Nick's got it to another level where how
• 26:27
Speaker 1: do you incorporate the basketball hoops and what does that
• 26:29
Speaker 1: breed as far as a culture. You know, it's interesting
• 26:32
Speaker 1: you go before before every meeting, team meeting starts, there's
• 26:35
Speaker 1: gonna be five or six guys in there, if not
• 26:37
Speaker 1: even more shooting hoops, talking trash. I mean, they're they're
• 26:41
Speaker 1: playing games and competing against each other, and it's just
• 26:43
Speaker 1: a part of the core values that Nick says about,
• 26:46
Speaker 1: let's compete. And then you know, us coaches get involved
• 26:48
Speaker 1: every now and then and we're shooting it from the
• 26:50
Speaker 1: rafters as far back as we can and it's just fun.
• 26:53
Speaker 1: And you lead into the meeting, there's some energy, there's
• 26:55
Speaker 1: a vibe that goes in. You know, our offensive coordinator
• 26:57
Speaker 1: coordinator saints like and does some things. He'll throw a
• 27:00
Speaker 1: ball back to offensive line to start the meeting, say hey,
• 27:02
Speaker 1: you got to hit this shot from there, and they're
• 27:04
Speaker 1: chucking and they're just banging off the back board and
• 27:07
Speaker 1: all that stuff. So it's like it's a great time
• 27:09
Speaker 1: and it's a great vibe, and I think it's just, hey,
• 27:11
Speaker 1: we're just doing those things that allow us to, Hey,
• 27:13
Speaker 1: you know, we got a job to do. We've got
• 27:15
Speaker 1: work to do, but dang it, you can be passionate
• 27:17
Speaker 1: and love what you do and have fun. And I
• 27:19
Speaker 1: think that's probably the biggest thing that's going on here.
• 27:21
Speaker 1: People are having fun playing here. Yeah, you know, I'm
• 27:24
Speaker 1: a big fan of Patti Mills. I liked Andrew Gays
• 27:27
Speaker 1: when he was at Seaton Hall. Does Jordan my Alatta
• 27:29
Speaker 1: the Australia have any sort of stroke? Can he shoot
• 27:32
Speaker 1: all the big lefty he Yeah, he comes, he takes
• 27:36
Speaker 1: some hooves. Yeah, he shoot, He shoots some hooves and
• 27:38
Speaker 1: and gets it done. So now Jordan's got a little
• 27:41
Speaker 1: game to him, and you see how athletic he is.
• 27:42
Speaker 1: He can definitely shoot the hoop. I love that. Um
• 27:46
Speaker 1: let's talk about you a little bit because I think
• 27:47
Speaker 1: you got one of the cooler stories. You mentioned you're
• 27:49
Speaker 1: a military man. You went to Air Force, but your
• 27:52
Speaker 1: father was a military man as well. Take us through
• 27:54
Speaker 1: your childhood and what led you to the game of football.
• 27:57
Speaker 1: You know, it's it's interesting because it wasn't probably about
• 28:00
Speaker 1: ten years ago. I actually lived in the US more
• 28:03
Speaker 1: than I lived overseas. You know. My dad was in
• 28:05
Speaker 1: the military. My other was British and he met her
• 28:08
Speaker 1: when he was stationed in England. I was actually born
• 28:10
Speaker 1: in Turkey. Um, no memories of it was it was
• 28:13
Speaker 1: very very very young when we left. My first memories
• 28:16
Speaker 1: are of England and and really I got family over
• 28:18
Speaker 1: there as well. But I traveled a lot growing up
• 28:21
Speaker 1: as a kid, and uh really kind of enjoyed it.
• 28:24
Speaker 1: I got to see things and do things that people
• 28:26
Speaker 1: have never seen. I love now that the NFL is
• 28:28
Speaker 1: being so active in in London with those games. My
• 28:31
Speaker 1: first ever NFL football game was at one Blee Stadium.
• 28:34
Speaker 1: It was a exhibition match way back when when I
• 28:37
Speaker 1: was a kid. So for me that I've actually had
• 28:39
Speaker 1: the opportunity to coach over there was over there as well.
• 28:42
Speaker 1: So to be able to be at my first game overseas,
• 28:45
Speaker 1: coaching a game overseas has been pretty cool. But yeah,
• 28:48
Speaker 1: that that military path, just the people you've met, people
• 28:51
Speaker 1: I've met. I followed in my dad's footsteps. My brother
• 28:54
Speaker 1: serves too. I've got a nephew that's currently serving, and
• 28:57
Speaker 1: you know, the Air Force Academy really kind of built
• 28:59
Speaker 1: my foundation as a coach. I was fortunate I had
• 29:02
Speaker 1: one of the greatest men, not just coaches, greatest men
• 29:05
Speaker 1: that I ever got to play for and Fisher to
• 29:07
Speaker 1: Bury and he I still get text from him after
• 29:09
Speaker 1: games today and it's it's awesome. But he was one
• 29:11
Speaker 1: of those guys that cared more about what type of
• 29:13
Speaker 1: man you became than just what type of football coach
• 29:16
Speaker 1: you became and and I tried to get both and
• 29:18
Speaker 1: and just fell in love with the game at a
• 29:20
Speaker 1: very early age. When you're stationed overseas, there's you know,
• 29:23
Speaker 1: the military basis, and you play the other military bases,
• 29:26
Speaker 1: you play the other kids. So I was I was
• 29:28
Speaker 1: playing football at a very early age. I didn't quite
• 29:30
Speaker 1: get into soccer. That was the one thing I kind
• 29:32
Speaker 1: of stayed away from. But uh, but it was great
• 29:34
Speaker 1: just growing up and and started there. I was in
• 29:36
Speaker 1: high school my freshman year playing ball there, and then
• 29:38
Speaker 1: came back stateside my sophomore year and and kind of
• 29:41
Speaker 1: went from there. And it was just an opportunity for
• 29:43
Speaker 1: me at the Air Force Academy to play football, to
• 29:46
Speaker 1: get a great degree, and and really have a job afterwards.
• 29:48
Speaker 1: I didn't quite realize what that job was going to
• 29:50
Speaker 1: be at the time, and uh have ended up being coaching.
• 29:53
Speaker 1: So I'm just was thankful for that opportunity, and I
• 29:55
Speaker 1: think it really helps me and my coaching day to
• 29:57
Speaker 1: day profession of having that military background and having some
• 30:01
Speaker 1: of those things that I use and just how I
• 30:03
Speaker 1: coach and how I teach. We'll see ultimate resp acts
• 30:06
Speaker 1: from around the league when everyone knows your path and
• 30:09
Speaker 1: and your military background. So you said you were born
• 30:11
Speaker 1: in Turkey and of course lived in in England. Where
• 30:14
Speaker 1: else did you live? Did you have other countries? Like
• 30:16
Speaker 1: what's on the passport when we go through your Yeah,
• 30:19
Speaker 1: so as a kid, we also we lived in Germany
• 30:22
Speaker 1: for two and a half years um actually about an
• 30:24
Speaker 1: hour south of the Munich game. So we were went
• 30:26
Speaker 1: into place called Augsburg. So maybe I'll get a chance
• 30:29
Speaker 1: to get over there, because all I remember about Germany
• 30:31
Speaker 1: is how amazing the food was, how amazing the candy was.
• 30:35
Speaker 1: And we used to have a Dang bakery truck that
• 30:37
Speaker 1: rolled through the neighborhood and we'd be chasing people at
• 30:40
Speaker 1: the ice cream truck in the US. We were chasing
• 30:41
Speaker 1: donuts over there in Germany. But it was a lot
• 30:44
Speaker 1: of fun and just doing that and and get be
• 30:46
Speaker 1: able to get back there when I'm older would be
• 30:48
Speaker 1: pretty cool. Again, was a kid there, but spent a
• 30:50
Speaker 1: little bit of time in Italy. Don't have a whole
• 30:52
Speaker 1: lot of memories of it. But my brother and I
• 30:55
Speaker 1: were talking about it the other day. He was talking
• 30:56
Speaker 1: like I knew what we was talking about. And kids,
• 31:01
Speaker 1: so but no, I've been able to do some awesome things.
• 31:04
Speaker 1: Germany was a pretty cool place with just the histre
• 31:06
Speaker 1: of it, and got to see castles and you know,
• 31:08
Speaker 1: just some different things that I think, at the end
• 31:10
Speaker 1: of the day of allowed me just to have a
• 31:12
Speaker 1: slightly different perspective on things. You get to the college
• 31:16
Speaker 1: game as a coach, you really take off at Oklahoma
• 31:18
Speaker 1: State with some great running backs, and you enter the
• 31:21
Speaker 1: NFL game and you get to coach some of the
• 31:23
Speaker 1: all time legends. I'm gonna say some names and you
• 31:25
Speaker 1: tell me some memories. Let's start off with Frank Gore.
• 31:30
Speaker 1: Frank to Tank, that's my man. Now. So here's the thing.
• 31:33
Speaker 1: You walk into a room, Yeah, this is your first
• 31:36
Speaker 1: day coaching in the NFL, and you're coaching a guy
• 31:39
Speaker 1: that you've watched play for years, is a Hall of
• 31:42
Speaker 1: Fame guy, and all that's going through my mind is
• 31:46
Speaker 1: what the heck am I going to teach this? What
• 31:48
Speaker 1: do I say to him? Exactly? You know? And and
• 31:51
Speaker 1: that's that was an amazing thing. Just he would sit
• 31:55
Speaker 1: back and you just knew he was taking in every
• 31:57
Speaker 1: single word that I said. And it was probably a
• 32:00
Speaker 1: week or two where I think I got the stamp
• 32:02
Speaker 1: of approval for him, he's like this guy those ball
• 32:05
Speaker 1: and bay. Basically at that point I kind of kind
• 32:08
Speaker 1: of had the room. You know, it was a good
• 32:10
Speaker 1: opportunity for me to teach and do those things, and
• 32:12
Speaker 1: I think I had, actually, as crazy it may sound,
• 32:15
Speaker 1: taught Frank maybe a thing or two he hadn't learned
• 32:17
Speaker 1: in in the past. And we still have a good
• 32:19
Speaker 1: relationship and keep in touch now. But that it is.
• 32:22
Speaker 1: You walk into that room and its it could be intimidating,
• 32:24
Speaker 1: but I always just stay true to myself and made
• 32:26
Speaker 1: sure that you know, it was all about the ball
• 32:28
Speaker 1: and different techniques and be detailed, and I think he
• 32:31
Speaker 1: appreciated that, and you know it was fortunately he had
• 32:34
Speaker 1: a thousand yards of Russian when I was there when
• 32:36
Speaker 1: the oldest guys to get it, so that was a
• 32:37
Speaker 1: cool moment for him. And the crazy, crazy thing about Frank,
• 32:40
Speaker 1: I gotta tell his story. So he would get all
• 32:43
Speaker 1: the game balls after games and he didn't care, but
• 32:46
Speaker 1: like he get he was like, here have this. He
• 32:48
Speaker 1: would give me these game balls I still have in
• 32:50
Speaker 1: my house and I told him, hey, when you were
• 32:52
Speaker 1: tired and you get I'm giving you these back. They're
• 32:54
Speaker 1: gonna meet something. Yeah, so I've kind of been holding
• 32:57
Speaker 1: them for him all these years now that I gotta
• 32:59
Speaker 1: get him back to hopefully I just maybe take it
• 33:01
Speaker 1: when he gets inducted to the Hall of Fame and
• 33:03
Speaker 1: give him to him. I remember doing a game of
• 33:05
Speaker 1: Frank Corps. Maybe he was. I forget what team he
• 33:07
Speaker 1: was even on at this point. It was at the
• 33:09
Speaker 1: end of the run for him, and I asked him, like,
• 33:11
Speaker 1: you want to get into coaching, and his son was
• 33:13
Speaker 1: playing already in college, and he said, I've always liked
• 33:16
Speaker 1: scouting and I have an eye for talent. And I
• 33:19
Speaker 1: was like, damn you remember. Can you imagine Frank Gore's
• 33:21
Speaker 1: an NFL general manager? Could you see that some day?
• 33:25
Speaker 1: You know? He used to come in and that's how
• 33:27
Speaker 1: he kind of watched opponent tape and he was like
• 33:29
Speaker 1: he knew. He was like, yeah, he ain't got no
• 33:31
Speaker 1: dog in and Mark, yeah, he's shop. This guy is
• 33:34
Speaker 1: pretty good, Like he would have some details stuff. So
• 33:36
Speaker 1: I could definitely see him transitioning into that part of
• 33:39
Speaker 1: the football career. Here, I'm gonna give you one more
• 33:42
Speaker 1: named Marshawn Lynch. You coached him when he was in Oakland.
• 33:44
Speaker 1: What do you got from Marshall, especially walking into that room,
• 33:47
Speaker 1: no doubt. You know, I love that dude. He's such
• 33:50
Speaker 1: He's so genuine and that's what you see the media
• 33:54
Speaker 1: stuff and you maybe get a little bit of him
• 33:56
Speaker 1: when he was playing. You know, I'm just here, so
• 33:58
Speaker 1: I don't get fine, everybody knows all that stuff. But
• 34:00
Speaker 1: here's the one thing about Marshawn, and this is all
• 34:03
Speaker 1: I needed to know when I got to Oakland. You know,
• 34:05
Speaker 1: I sat down with the young running backs each individually
• 34:07
Speaker 1: when I get there. It's kind of common thing I do.
• 34:10
Speaker 1: Sat down with them and I just remember, hey, you know,
• 34:13
Speaker 1: I had a little tough time, but Marshaun helped me
• 34:15
Speaker 1: out and boom next guy. Yeah it was rough here,
• 34:17
Speaker 1: but Marshawn, you know, he helped me get through some things.
• 34:20
Speaker 1: And he kept saying it was like all that. I
• 34:22
Speaker 1: was like, that's all I need to know. This man
• 34:24
Speaker 1: is a phenomenal teammate and he takes care of his
• 34:27
Speaker 1: guys and they love him in the locker room. I
• 34:29
Speaker 1: didn't need to know anything else. You know. Now we
• 34:31
Speaker 1: had some great conversations. There's even some you know, teaching
• 34:34
Speaker 1: techniques and things that he did visually that I've incorporated
• 34:37
Speaker 1: into the things that I teach as well. It's a
• 34:39
Speaker 1: give and take. I tell these guys all the time,
• 34:41
Speaker 1: I'm stealing stuff from you. Do you maybe think you're
• 34:43
Speaker 1: getting stuff from me? I'm stealing stuff from you as well.
• 34:45
Speaker 1: And he was just great that way and just phenomenal physical.
• 34:49
Speaker 1: Still one of the toughest running backs to play the game.
• 34:51
Speaker 1: I truly who You'd watch some tape and not to
• 34:54
Speaker 1: call out anybody, but there's a few people that turned
• 34:56
Speaker 1: it down when he was coming through. The whole business
• 34:59
Speaker 1: decision is definite business. I'm so happy for your success
• 35:05
Speaker 1: now and you're you guys are that top team in
• 35:06
Speaker 1: the NFC. You and I have had conversations in recent
• 35:08
Speaker 1: offseasons about coaching, you know, hiring practices and you know,
• 35:13
Speaker 1: things that maybe we'd like to see changed over the years. Now.
• 35:15
Speaker 1: Obviously you're a person of color, You've got this incredible resume. Uh.
• 35:20
Speaker 1: When you look at the NFL as a landscape, you
• 35:23
Speaker 1: personally like, do you want to have a large, a
• 35:25
Speaker 1: louder voice, maybe have access to Hey, here's some things
• 35:27
Speaker 1: you can do, and if you could make any suggestions
• 35:30
Speaker 1: on opening doors for other faces and other voices, what
• 35:33
Speaker 1: would be some of the suggestions you might have. You know, definitely,
• 35:37
Speaker 1: that's that's something that's at the forefront right now. And
• 35:39
Speaker 1: I've always felt that it comes down to training and opportunities,
• 35:43
Speaker 1: right It's it's do the people have the proper training,
• 35:45
Speaker 1: do they have access to that training? And you know,
• 35:48
Speaker 1: obviously a little bit of military jargon there, but it
• 35:50
Speaker 1: really is that coaching is the same way. How can
• 35:53
Speaker 1: I how can we get guys the ability to learn
• 35:55
Speaker 1: maybe to be in the coach in the quarterback room,
• 35:58
Speaker 1: to learn quarterback play. And I think it may go
• 36:00
Speaker 1: down to even at the lower levels, like having more
• 36:04
Speaker 1: minorities playing the blows positions, playing the quarterback position, to
• 36:07
Speaker 1: where they kind of grows. You just look at the
• 36:09
Speaker 1: nature of this profession, that position, because of its leadership,
• 36:14
Speaker 1: because of its having to understand the entire side of
• 36:16
Speaker 1: the ball, those type of things kind of lends itself
• 36:18
Speaker 1: for those guys to become head coaches. So just just
• 36:21
Speaker 1: training in opportunities, anything that the NFL can do, and
• 36:24
Speaker 1: I know there's some programs that they have in place
• 36:26
Speaker 1: to where they do that, and then just the interaction
• 36:29
Speaker 1: at the end of the day, there's there's thirty two
• 36:31
Speaker 1: guys that are making kind of those decisions and being
• 36:34
Speaker 1: able to have some interactions with those guys to where
• 36:37
Speaker 1: they get a chance to maybe meet the young man
• 36:39
Speaker 1: from a different part and kind of build their list
• 36:42
Speaker 1: of possible candidates. You know, GM is the same way.
• 36:45
Speaker 1: So just anything that we can do that from training
• 36:48
Speaker 1: from the ground roots, from the start, from the bottom up,
• 36:50
Speaker 1: and then anything that we can have that allows these
• 36:52
Speaker 1: guys to have some accessibility to some of the people
• 36:56
Speaker 1: that are kind of making the decisions, it's only going
• 36:58
Speaker 1: to help. And I think I was gonna cut you
• 37:02
Speaker 1: off and say, I think getting in the room for
• 37:04
Speaker 1: the interview helps to you know, like and getting that
• 37:06
Speaker 1: opportunity to have your reps and getting all that I
• 37:09
Speaker 1: want to help anyway I can to make it a
• 37:11
Speaker 1: different situation. Obviously, the optics as we see it now
• 37:14
Speaker 1: are not ideal. And it's you know, a lot of
• 37:17
Speaker 1: it is just like you said, there's thirty two owners.
• 37:19
Speaker 1: How do we introduce different faces, different voices that maybe
• 37:23
Speaker 1: those owners won't have interaction with every day, especially if
• 37:25
Speaker 1: they're not in their building exactly it is, and it's
• 37:29
Speaker 1: you know, you have some of the coach meeting. I
• 37:31
  Speaker 1: think that, Actually I don't. I don't know the name
• 37:33
Speaker 1: of the program. I hate to say that, but the
• 37:34
Speaker 1: the NFL had a recent program where they did some
• 37:36
Speaker 1: things like that. I mean, and it's even from simple
• 37:39
Speaker 1: stuff to you know what, Maybe it's a golf outing,
• 37:41
Speaker 1: Maybe it's just some social meetings that you can set
• 37:44
Speaker 1: up for those guys. And but I do think that
• 37:46
Speaker 1: the most important thing is do we have viable candidates,
• 37:49
Speaker 1: And that's making sure that the pool of viable candidates
• 37:52
Speaker 1: from guys that are trained, guys that are prepared because
• 37:56
Speaker 1: you just never know, I mean going into an interview
• 37:58
Speaker 1: for a head coach. Not that I've had one of those,
• 38:00
Speaker 1: but I could see is it could be pretty intimidating.
• 38:02
Speaker 1: You've got GM, you've got owners, you've got all that stuff. Well,
• 38:05
Speaker 1: how prepared it as a guy to walk into that
• 38:07
Speaker 1: situation and allowing that? And I think that's just for
• 38:10
Speaker 1: everybody just getting those experience you mentioned it, getting the reps.
• 38:13
Speaker 1: I remember my first ever interview for a coaching job.
• 38:15
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, that's the worst thing I've ever done.
• 38:18
Speaker 1: But I learned so much from that one failure that
• 38:22
Speaker 1: it helped me grow so much but if you never
• 38:24
Speaker 1: even have that chance to to experience that failure, the
• 38:26
Speaker 1: growth is a little bit harder to achieve. I think
• 38:30
Speaker 1: you're an incredible dude, and I think this team is
• 38:32
Speaker 1: on a roll right now. If you could sum up
• 38:35
Speaker 1: the vibe in that building right now, from ownership from
• 38:38
Speaker 1: Mr LORII on down to to the guys who worked
• 38:41
Speaker 1: the day to day in the cafeteria and the ladies
• 38:43
Speaker 1: work in the cafteria, Like, what's the feeling right now
• 38:45
Speaker 1: in Philadelphia for our listeners who are tuning in now
• 38:47
Speaker 1: as we enter week fifteen of what's been a really
• 38:49
Speaker 1: cool Eagles season. Well, let me see that. And I've
• 38:52
Speaker 1: been a couple of other places, and this is not
• 38:54
Speaker 1: me kissing up. This is just true to my heart.
• 38:57
Speaker 1: This place here is unlike any other place I've been
• 38:59
Speaker 1: in this facility, just the people here, and it starts
• 39:02
Speaker 1: at the top of Mr. Laura. I mean, we have
• 39:04
Speaker 1: everything you could possibly need to succe eat and he's
• 39:07
Speaker 1: gonna give us everything that we need. You jump down
• 39:09
Speaker 1: to how we talk about the players that we have
• 39:11
Speaker 1: here and the things that he's been able to bring
• 39:13
  Speaker 1: into this building. It's it's been phenomenal. I mean I
• 39:15
Speaker 1: just my room alone. It's always been like, hey, what
• 39:17
Speaker 1: do you need? How can we get better? How can
• 39:19
Speaker 1: we get better? And that when it starts there, it's awesome.
• 39:22
Speaker 1: Then you got nick. I mean, running things is is
• 39:24
Speaker 1: always a great vibe. We already talked about the fun,
• 39:27
Speaker 1: the competing, just his passion and energy that's gone that
• 39:30
Speaker 1: everybody it's this building is awesome. I mean, it's just
• 39:33
Speaker 1: it's one of those things that we're in Philly. We're
• 39:35
Speaker 1: winning the vibe you talk about. I've been some places
• 39:37
Speaker 1: where you win and it ain't always as fun here
• 39:40
Speaker 1: it is. It's it's top of the world right now.
• 39:43
Speaker 1: We've gotta keep it and and it's the great thing
• 39:45
Speaker 1: is we've got it, but everybody's still hungry. It's like
• 39:48
Speaker 1: in the building, we haven't done anything yet. We haven't
• 39:51
Speaker 1: done anything. Miles is all, yeah, I got no, he
• 39:53
Speaker 1: hasn't done anything yet, and he'll tell you that. So
• 39:55
Speaker 1: it's just that vibe of you know, it's a mission
• 39:58
Speaker 1: like military man, We're on a mission and then we
• 40:00
Speaker 1: ain't done until the mission is completed. And that's the vibe. It's, hey,
• 40:03
Speaker 1: we're having fun, We're enjoying what we're doing. But we
• 40:06
Speaker 1: came here to work and we're going to continue to
• 40:08
Speaker 1: work until the work is done. Oh man, you gotta
• 40:11
Speaker 1: ready to run through a wall right now. And I'll
• 40:13
Speaker 1: tell you what, tell you what. You got the Bears
• 40:16
Speaker 1: this weekend and then you got that game Christmas Eve
• 40:19
Speaker 1: in Dallas. Hey, I'm not saying you're I heard the
• 40:26
  Speaker 1: Bears that I know, I know, I know, and I
• 40:30
Speaker 1: think that's important. And I feel like I got that
• 40:32
Speaker 1: vibe being around this team just a little bit on
• 40:35
Speaker 1: Sunday on the sidelines that they were focused on the
• 40:37
Speaker 1: Giants and they weren't thinking about Super Bowl, and they
• 40:40
Speaker 1: weren't thinking about the Cowboys, and they weren't thinking about
• 40:42
Speaker 1: the forty niners in Brock Party. You guys are doing
• 40:45
Speaker 1: something really special and I think you, specifically in that
• 40:47
Speaker 1: running backs room, have been doing something really special. I
• 40:50
Speaker 1: gotta thank you for doing all that. And I guess,
• 40:53
Speaker 1: on the way out, just your one message from I
• 40:55
Speaker 1: guess for Philly fans who might be tuning in what
• 40:58
Speaker 1: this team, what you want to represent from Philadelphia, and
• 41:01
Speaker 1: you know kind of you're feeling as far as the
• 41:03
Speaker 1: mutual relationship between this Eagles franchise that fan base. It's
• 41:08
Speaker 1: we're brothers. It's amazing. And keep going back to multiple
• 41:12
Speaker 1: road games. We're down in Arizona and we have home
• 41:16
Speaker 1: field advantage. The home team has to go silent cadence
• 41:19
Speaker 1: in a two minute series because our fans are so loud.
• 41:23
  Speaker 1: And I said that, I don't I don't want lukewarm.
• 41:25
Speaker 1: I don't want lukewarm. I want all in. And these
• 41:28
Speaker 1: they're gonna be all in, and they're all in when
• 41:30
Speaker 1: you're doing right, and they're gonna let you know when
• 41:32
Speaker 1: you're doing wrong. And that's the best part about this place.
• 41:35
Speaker 1: It's the team that they don't understand. These guys walking
• 41:37
Speaker 1: down working in the streets, affiliate here, we're the same way.
• 41:40
Speaker 1: We're just doing it a little bit different. We're working
• 41:42
Speaker 1: just as hard as you guys were, trying to bring
• 41:44
Speaker 1: everything we can to to your lives, your daily so
• 41:47
Speaker 1: when you come into that stadium on Sundays, you can
• 41:50
Speaker 1: have a good time, get going, hooting holler, maybe maybe
• 41:54
Speaker 1: a boo every now and then, just because you're passage
• 41:56
Speaker 1: about it, and that's okay, that's okay. But this is
• 41:59
Speaker 1: this is place right here. When you talk about the
• 42:01
Speaker 1: fan base, when you talk about this organization. I can't
• 42:04
Speaker 1: think of a better place in the world to be
• 42:05
Speaker 1: than right here. Now. I'll tell you, it almost feels
• 42:09
Speaker 1: like it's cliche or it's pandering or something like you
• 42:12
Speaker 1: watch Elane Johnson, you watch Jason Kelsey, you see a
• 42:15
Speaker 1: Javon Hargrave, Like those guys are lunch pale guys and
• 42:19
Speaker 1: they represent Philadelphia, and I feel like your team right now,
• 42:23
Speaker 1: this Eagles is as symbolic of that city as any
• 42:27
Speaker 1: of the Eagles teams we've had in recent history. No, No,
• 42:29
  Speaker 1: they're a big part of it. We're doing a lot
• 42:31
Speaker 1: for them and they're doing a lot for us, and
• 42:33
  Speaker 1: it's it's it's a great opportunity. And these guys are
• 42:36
Speaker 1: getting fired up about things that really matter. I mean,
• 42:38
Speaker 1: Miles the other day, he's got so hyped up about
• 42:41
Speaker 1: a block, his blocking and now I'm not gonna lie.
• 42:44
Speaker 1: I got pretty hyped up too because he got after it.
• 42:46
Speaker 1: But those are the thing. And you see our line
• 42:48
Speaker 1: on a QB sneak and they're so far. The energy
• 42:52
Speaker 1: is awesome, and the energy is phenomenal. Again starts with
• 42:55
Speaker 1: up at the top of our ownership and our GM
• 42:57
Speaker 1: and then obviously coming down our head coach with Nick
• 42:59
Speaker 1: and it's just permeating throughout the building. We got the
• 43:02
Speaker 1: right people in this building. Dude. I love talking to
• 43:05
Speaker 1: Jamal Singleton, running backs coach for the Eagles, also the
• 43:08
Speaker 1: assistant head coach. You got a bright future ahead of you,
• 43:10
Speaker 1: but you've already done such a cool thing in your career.
• 43:13
Speaker 1: And thanks for representing not only uh, you know, the
• 43:16
Speaker 1: Eagles every week, but also your military background and all
• 43:19
Speaker 1: the different people who want to be head coaches someday.
• 43:22
Speaker 1: You're doing something on a day to day basis that
• 43:24
Speaker 1: I think is really inspiring and I appreciate that. Just
• 43:27
Speaker 1: trying to be the best I can be for these
• 43:29
Speaker 1: young men in this building. That service, that's what that is.
• 43:32
Speaker 1: And uh, Jamal, thank you so much. Good luck this weekend,
• 43:36
Speaker 1: and we won't talk about any weeks further one at
• 43:39
Speaker 1: a time, all right. Thank you. Jamal Singleton was fantastic
• 43:48
Speaker 1: running backs coach for the Eagles, a great man, great story,
• 43:52
Speaker 1: and we love bringing him on the podcast. We also
• 43:55
Speaker 1: like bringing in our guy, Taylor Kyle's. Taylor works with
• 43:58
Speaker 1: the NFL Network Research group back in Los Angeles and
• 44:02
Speaker 1: he and I go back and forth during the week
• 44:04
Speaker 1: and say, what can we do that makes this podcast
• 44:06
Speaker 1: a little bit smarter? And I I kicked off my
• 44:10
Speaker 1: shout out this week to Jared Goff and what he's
• 44:12
Speaker 1: been through off the field in his mental toughness, but
• 44:15
Speaker 1: I wanted to bring in Taylor talk a little bit
• 44:17
Speaker 1: more on the field. Taylor, Welcome to the season with
• 44:20
Speaker 1: Peter Schregen. Thank you brother, great to be back. Thank
• 44:23
Speaker 1: you again for having me. Love having you on. And uh,
• 44:26
Speaker 1: I love what the Lions are doing on offense. You're
• 44:28
Speaker 1: gonna make us smarter. Jared Goff is having this Pro
• 44:31
Speaker 1: Bowl season. If it wasn't for Jalen Hurts, he'd be
• 44:33
Speaker 1: the number one quarterback in the NFC this season. And
• 44:35
Speaker 1: I think it feels like I came out of seemingly nowhere,
• 44:38
Speaker 1: but golf has done this in the past. What are
• 44:40
Speaker 1: you seeing from Jared Goff this year that maybe we
• 44:43
Speaker 1: haven't seen the past few seasons. So it's pretty funny
• 44:46
Speaker 1: because roster wise, there are some overlaps that kind of
• 44:50
Speaker 1: the rams, like he got the really good receiving corps obviously,
• 44:53
Speaker 1: Almon Ross st Brown Shark, Jamison Williams catching his first
• 44:56
Speaker 1: career touchdown, which is pretty fantastic. But the Lions, he
• 45:00
Speaker 1: may have the best offensive line he's ever had. Talk
• 45:02
Speaker 1: about it. I love that's sucking Lions offensive line. Let's go.
• 45:06
Speaker 1: I'm mean Peney school going in motion and catching the
• 45:10
Speaker 1: game clinching pass was one of the most out of
• 45:12
Speaker 1: pocket things I have ever seen, and it gave me
• 45:15
Speaker 1: the best goose bumps. Like that was fantastic. But when
• 45:18
Speaker 1: you got athletes like that on the line, man, you're
• 45:20
Speaker 1: gonna get a lot done. And you know, with the Rams,
• 45:23
Speaker 1: they had that whole outside sown scheme boot off It,
• 45:25
Speaker 1: which everyone's still trying to copy. But with Dan Campbell's system,
• 45:29
Speaker 1: what they're doing more is they run a lot of
• 45:31
Speaker 1: downhill schemes. They can do anything, but it's a lot
• 45:33
Speaker 1: of downhill stuff where teams are saying, Okay, we need
• 45:36
Speaker 1: to load the box to defend these guys. Now, Jared
• 45:39
Speaker 1: Golf is getting more opportunities against more man coverage, more
• 45:43
Speaker 1: single high defenses, and he despite the fact that he's
• 45:47
Speaker 1: using play action and one of the lowest rates of
• 45:49
Speaker 1: his career, he has three more touchdowns on play action
• 45:52
Speaker 1: than the closest player, So the play action is one
• 45:56
Speaker 1: element of it. He's getting a lot of good plays
• 45:58
Speaker 1: with his receivers obviously doing a great job. He's getting
• 46:00
Speaker 1: the protection back there. But I think you have to
• 46:03
Speaker 1: bring the off field part of it as well, because
• 46:05
Speaker 1: the confidence he's playing with is something that we just
• 46:08
Speaker 1: we saw glimpses of it last season his first year
• 46:11
Speaker 1: with the Lions, but really like the decision making, the anticipation,
• 46:15
Speaker 1: just the willingness to kind of let him rip it
• 46:17
Speaker 1: and not necessarily lean on play action. As I said before,
• 46:21
Speaker 1: you know, they're giving them more chances to drop back
• 46:23
Speaker 1: and go downfield. And although he's not throwing downfield really
• 46:26
Speaker 1: more than he used to. He's got some of the
• 46:28
Speaker 1: lowest air yards per attempt that he's had in his
• 46:30
Speaker 1: career past two years, or top three lowest he's had.
• 46:34
Speaker 1: But at the same time, he's actually making the throws,
• 46:36
Speaker 1: and you see him throwing more confidence where instead of
• 46:39
Speaker 1: kind of being reserved to just a handful of plays
• 46:41
Speaker 1: where if its long yardage pretty much with the rams
• 46:44
Speaker 1: could guarantee he was just going to throw a deep
• 46:46
Speaker 1: end route. Now you're seeing a little more diversity in
• 46:48
Speaker 1: the scheme and him knowing I got these top receivers
• 46:51
Speaker 1: and the staff that believes in me, I can kind
• 46:53
Speaker 1: of let that thing ring and go downfield when I
• 46:55
Speaker 1: need to and actually execute. It's been really, really cool
• 46:57
Speaker 1: to watch for a guy who, as you said, has
• 46:59
Speaker 1: been through a lot in his career, especially mentally. And
• 47:02
Speaker 1: now here's the question from men, let's put your hat
• 47:04
Speaker 1: on a you're an a p voter. You know NFL honors,
• 47:07
Speaker 1: we do comeback Player of the Year, and a lot
• 47:09
Speaker 1: of times it's just the guy who tore his knee
• 47:11
Speaker 1: up last year. And I'm saying that flippantly. I mean,
• 47:13
Speaker 1: that's an awesome story, and that guy comes back and
• 47:15
Speaker 1: runs for a thousand yards. Jared Goff wasn't injured last year.
• 47:18
Speaker 1: Jared Goff, if anything, his feelings might have been hurt.
• 47:22
Speaker 1: Would you say he's eligible for comeback player here? Do
• 47:24
Speaker 1: you think that's insulting to golf, who would probably say, like, hey,
• 47:27
Speaker 1: I've been here all along. It's not some comeback story.
• 47:29
Speaker 1: I've been here. It's just it just took time to
• 47:31
Speaker 1: get together and to make this thing work. I don't
• 47:34
Speaker 1: think he'd be disrespectful to golf because I think even
• 47:36
Speaker 1: he'd acknowledge that the pieces around him or some of
• 47:38
Speaker 1: the best again, that he's had in his career, and
• 47:41
Speaker 1: now I think he's being able to elevate the talent
• 47:43
Speaker 1: around him as well and kind of capitalize on it now.
• 47:45
Speaker 1: Personally come back player of the Year, I'd go Geno
• 47:48
Speaker 1: Smith had a rough week last week, I will admit that,
• 47:51
Speaker 1: but I mean, what he's done after being off the
• 47:54
Speaker 1: map for so long, it's been very impressive. But at
• 47:57
Speaker 1: the same time, what Golf is doing, man like, I
• 47:59
Speaker 1: don't think anybody's you know, saying that, oh, this is
• 48:02
Speaker 1: exactly what we thought we were going to see from
• 48:04
Speaker 1: Jared Goff, and even he speaks to you the confidence
• 48:07
Speaker 1: that he has this season. I keep going back to
• 48:08
Speaker 1: that word confidence. Confidence. But when you know you're the
• 48:11
Speaker 1: essentially the face of a franchise, is the quarterback, that's
• 48:14
Speaker 1: a pretty impressive piece of the pie there. And uh yeah,
• 48:17
  Speaker 1: I don't think it's disrespectful. I think it's pretty fair
• 48:19
Speaker 1: to say, you know, Golf was successful obviously helped bring
• 48:23
Speaker 1: his team to a Super Bowl with the Rams, but
• 48:25
Speaker 1: he wasn't the guy. He wasn't the featured player. And
• 48:27
Speaker 1: I'm not necessarily saying that he is the guy for
• 48:30
Speaker 1: the Lions offense. I think those running backs are doing
• 48:33
Speaker 1: a fantastic job as well. They're really doing a lot
• 48:36
Speaker 1: for that offense. But I mean, he's playing in a
• 48:39
Speaker 1: level that he hasn't in his career, So I think
• 48:41
Speaker 1: it's very fair to say that he's in the running
• 48:43
Speaker 1: for comeback Player of the Year. I love it. I'm
• 48:45
Speaker 1: gonna give you one name right now, and it's gonna
• 48:46
Speaker 1: come up a bunch in the final weeks of this season.
• 48:50
Speaker 1: Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson is the offensive coordinator of the Lions.
• 48:54
Speaker 1: He's thirty six years old. He does play calls, and
• 48:58
Speaker 1: he's the one who's calling that sewell play. And I
• 49:00
Speaker 1: know we're always looking for the next young offensive mind.
• 49:02
Speaker 1: There's a lot of great ones out there. But don't
• 49:04
Speaker 1: be shocked if a thirty six year old you've probably
• 49:07
Speaker 1: not as familiar with not you ever, what I'm saying
• 49:09
Speaker 1: because he's been with the Detroit Lions and he's with
• 49:12
Speaker 1: the Miami Dolphins. Is a wide receivers coach before then, Uh,
• 49:15
Speaker 1: Ben Johnson has been been really in golf here. I
• 49:17
Speaker 1: think it's a cool story and Uh, Taylor, I appreciate you.
• 49:20
Speaker 1: Thanks for bringing a light exactly what Jared Goff is doing.
• 49:23
  Speaker 1: I didn't realize he's doing even less play action. I
• 49:24
Speaker 1: feel like every time I'm watching him, it's that play
• 49:26
Speaker 1: action pass and that deep pass. No, they're just calling
• 49:28
Speaker 1: at the right time. He's making most of those opportunities exactly.
• 49:31
Speaker 1: All Right, you're the man. Thanks for making us smarter.
• 49:33
Speaker 1: We'll get back with you next week. Absolutely can't wait.
• 49:36
Speaker 1: Thank you, brother. All Right, Taylor was great and does
• 49:38
Speaker 1: a lot of the NFL network research and I really
• 49:40
Speaker 1: appreciate it. But I go back with my next guest.
• 49:43
Speaker 1: Jason Thornberry is one of the smartest football guys I know,
• 49:47
Speaker 1: an amazing researcher, fantasy football expert, all the stuff. We
• 49:51
Speaker 1: were on a crew together for many years uh doing
• 49:55
Speaker 1: Fox games. I was a sideline reporter. He was the
• 49:57
Speaker 1: stats and research guy. And on Friday nights, thorn was
• 50:00
Speaker 1: what we called him. He got to pick where we're
• 50:02
Speaker 1: going for dinner, and he would always pick the best
• 50:04
Speaker 1: steakhouse in town. We would have the best time and
• 50:07
Speaker 1: we would rattle up that bill and Thorn would have
• 50:09
  Speaker 1: a giant t bone steak or a tomahawk And I
• 50:12
Speaker 1: love this guy. And then I stopped doing the sidelines.
• 50:15
Speaker 1: I get in the studio and Jason Thornberry gets elevated
• 50:18
Speaker 1: to the number one crew at Fox through and work
• 50:20
Speaker 1: with Olson and Burkhardt, and I couldn't be prouder of him.
• 50:23
Speaker 1: Then I'm watching this game on Sunday. It's a blowout
• 50:26
Speaker 1: late in the fourth quarter, and Kevin Burkhart just throws
• 50:29
Speaker 1: out a little comment and says, Jason Thornberry is gonna
• 50:32
Speaker 1: be traveling from San Francisco where the game was, to
• 50:36
Speaker 1: Seattle where he lives, and he's going through. Okay, nahwa
• 50:39
Speaker 1: okay nawa. I said, Oh, I know exactly what that means.
• 50:43
Speaker 1: That's an inside joke I had to bring on thorn
• 50:45
Speaker 1: because we're gonna go deep cut sports media travel situations
• 50:49
Speaker 1: and we're gonna talk about what that means. Jason Thornberry,
• 50:51
Speaker 1: welcome to the show. Well, thank you for having me. Peter,
• 50:54
Speaker 1: you are a crazy man for having uh. Behind the
• 50:57
Speaker 1: scenes you talked about is travel. But that's that's what
• 51:00
Speaker 1: makes the podcast so good. I've been, first of all,
• 51:02
Speaker 1: a big fan, big fan of the podcast. He texted
• 51:05
Speaker 1: me a couple of weeks ago. I flattered and overwhelmed
• 51:07
Speaker 1: that you were listening. If you if you would like
• 51:09
Speaker 1: to get into why you were wrong about Turkey on
• 51:12
Speaker 1: Thanksgiving at some point today. I could do that for you,
• 51:15
Speaker 1: but you know it's your show, so you go where
• 51:17
Speaker 1: you want. It is. Uh, you're a Seattle guy, and
• 51:21
Speaker 1: you fly out of Seattle, and what's that airport called
• 51:23
Speaker 1: tack Sea, giant monstrosity of an airport. Um, but you
• 51:30
Speaker 1: probably do a lot of East Coast games, do it
• 51:33
Speaker 1: working with Burkhardt and those guys, a lot of Dallas trips,
• 51:35
Speaker 1: on of Philadelphia trips. You are living a lot of
• 51:38
Speaker 1: your life on an airplane, true or false, I plead
• 51:41
Speaker 1: guilty to that. Yeah, I'm I do it. Yeah, I
• 51:44
Speaker 1: do a lot of a lot of the times. I'm
• 51:46
Speaker 1: doing a lot of work on an airplane, working on
• 51:47
Speaker 1: an airplane all the time. So I hear you, I
• 51:49
Speaker 1: do the same. I live in New York and I
• 51:50
Speaker 1: work in l A every weekend, so I spend fourteen
• 51:53
Speaker 1: hours a week during this season on the weekends on
• 51:56
Speaker 1: those airplanes. And you become not obsessed, but the life
• 52:02
Speaker 1: of air plane and flight travel becomes a big part
• 52:06
Speaker 1: of your happiness and your mental health and everything, and
• 52:08
Speaker 1: your physical well being. And when you get a certain
• 52:12
Speaker 1: status on the airline, your life becomes a little easier.
• 52:16
Speaker 1: You get to board the plan first, you get the
• 52:18
Speaker 1: upgrades when they're available, and you get to at least
• 52:21
Speaker 1: lean into the fact that, hey, I gave my entire
• 52:24
Speaker 1: winter to traveling, and now I'm getting some perks out
• 52:27
Speaker 1: of this thing. So when I giggle and cackle at
• 52:30
Speaker 1: home hearing that Jason Thornbury on a national broadcast is
• 52:33
Speaker 1: traveling from San Francisco through Okinawa to Seattle, I had
• 52:39
Speaker 1: to hit you up and say, get us into it,
• 52:41
Speaker 1: tell us what that means. We didn't get any context
• 52:43
Speaker 1: from Burkhardt. I just laughed because I know this certainly
• 52:46
Speaker 1: was some illusion or some reference to the way you're
• 52:49
Speaker 1: going to collect your miles at the end of the year,
• 52:51
Speaker 1: because on January one, you started zero on the doometer again.
• 52:55
Speaker 1: And I know where you're probably at. You're probably right
• 52:57
Speaker 1: at that gold medallion thing, right. I mean, I'm close, baby,
• 53:01
  Speaker 1: I'm close, and I'm not. Uh. I got to I
• 53:04
Speaker 1: got to late November and I realized I got a
• 53:06
Speaker 1: little bit of work to do here, because you know,
• 53:10
Speaker 1: sometimes I just lost track of it. I usually I'll
• 53:12
Speaker 1: bring it down for you. I usually I'm I'm obsessed
• 53:15
Speaker 1: with this, So I usually keep the spreadsheet to make
• 53:18
Speaker 1: sure that the airline is properly crediting me and all
• 53:21
Speaker 1: this stuff. And there was one year where they screwed
• 53:23
Speaker 1: up and I was on the phone with him, like, look,
• 53:25
Speaker 1: I got a spreadsheet that shows me I know how
• 53:26
Speaker 1: many miles I got. I went back and forth and
• 53:28
Speaker 1: they figured it out and they were wrong and I
• 53:30
Speaker 1: got credit. So I'm kind of obsessed with it. But
• 53:32
Speaker 1: this year I let it go a little bit. I
• 53:34
Speaker 1: got to the end of November and I'm like, wow,
• 53:36
Speaker 1: I'm really behind. So I had to make some trips up.
• 53:38
Speaker 1: I didn't actually connect through Okinawa, that was Burkhart's funny
• 53:42
Speaker 1: way of saying, but I did have a crazy trip.
• 53:45
Speaker 1: Where can I just say to this is all above board,
• 53:48
Speaker 1: by the way, I'm not. I'm all all these things
• 53:51
Speaker 1: are within policy with Fox, the Fox travel folks, they're awhere.
• 53:55
Speaker 1: It's it's all under budget. These flights cost less. What
• 54:00
Speaker 1: do you do seven connecting flights that justice? You're actually true?
• 54:04
Speaker 1: It's actually true. So uh. Anyway, So I went from
• 54:08
Speaker 1: Seattle where I lived, to Boston, back to Seattle and
• 54:12
Speaker 1: then to San Jose and then on the way home,
• 54:15
Speaker 1: I went the way home, I went San Jose, Seattle,
• 54:19
Speaker 1: Jay Seattle, so you know it was it was an
• 54:24
Speaker 1: eleven thousand mile weekend. And put it on the board, Baby,
• 54:29
Speaker 1: put it on the board, and you know, I'm back
• 54:31
Speaker 1: on track. So this week I have another kind of
• 54:34
Speaker 1: crazy one, but then after that it'll be okay. I
• 54:36
Speaker 1: needed I also needed to build up a little buffer
• 54:38
Speaker 1: because um, we have a Christmas Eve game and I
• 54:42
Speaker 1: really want to get home for Christmas morning, so I
• 54:46
Speaker 1: can't be taking a while. So I got to get
• 54:49
Speaker 1: home for that. So I needed to build it up
• 54:51
Speaker 1: a little bit. All Right, if you think you're crazy, hey,
• 54:54
Speaker 1: I've done this. I've done this multiple years because all right,
• 54:58
  Speaker 1: I'm a I'm a Delta flyer. I'll just say it
• 55:00
Speaker 1: like it isn't Delta flyer and the highest level is diamond.
• 55:04
Speaker 1: And you get to mid December and you've been on
• 55:06
Speaker 1: the road all season and you're flying, and you're like,
• 55:09
Speaker 1: I'm gonna be short. And what they do is the
• 55:11
Speaker 1: different legs count and all the miles count. So sometimes
• 55:15
Speaker 1: if I've got to go to Los Angeles from New York,
• 55:17
Speaker 1: I might take a pit stop in Salt Lake City.
• 55:20
Speaker 1: I might just to get those extra ones. We might
• 55:22
Speaker 1: be going through Atlanta and everyone might think that's crazy,
• 55:24
Speaker 1: but the difference of of seeing that status hit is
• 55:28
Speaker 1: such a sick thing for us folks who travel for
• 55:30
Speaker 1: a living that it matters. Now you're going to Jacksonville.
• 55:33
Speaker 1: That's can't be a direct shot from Seattle. What is
• 55:35
Speaker 1: the route this week? There actually is a direct shot
• 55:39
Speaker 1: from Jacksonville, but from Seattle Jacksonville. Yeah, but what I'm
• 55:44
Speaker 1: doing is uh again a little crazy. But I'm doing
• 55:49
Speaker 1: in Seattle to Boston to Miami to Jacksonville. And and
• 55:55
Speaker 1: what you just said was the pits stop, the pit
• 55:57
Speaker 1: stop in Miami shog because this how long the flights
• 56:02
Speaker 1: of from Miami to Javil is very short. But but
• 56:07
Speaker 1: the minimum, the minimum amount of of miles they give
• 56:11
Speaker 1: me is five hundred. So even though that's like a
• 56:14
Speaker 1: hundred and eighty two three hundred miles, whatever, you get
• 56:17
Speaker 1: the free three. I mean, it's it's a win for everyone.
• 56:20
Speaker 1: So we're beating the system. You have to. And I
• 56:24
Speaker 1: want to say too, it isn't just about like and
• 56:27
Speaker 1: partly it's about the scoreboard. Like when I'm getting on
• 56:30
Speaker 1: that flight and I'm standing in line and they're like, Okay,
• 56:32
Speaker 1: are hundred thousand miles or whatever the top group, the diamonds.
• 56:37
Speaker 1: I want to be in that group, Like, I don't
• 56:39
Speaker 1: want anybody getting on that flight thinking that they got
• 56:43
Speaker 1: one over on me, Like I am the top guy, right,
• 56:46
Speaker 1: first one on, first one off. That's my that's my thing.
• 56:50
Speaker 1: So but but the real reason is is anybody who's
• 56:53
Speaker 1: traveled knows traveling is not fun. It's not easy. And
• 56:57
Speaker 1: if you don't have status on that airline, you barely
• 57:00
Speaker 1: get a smile out of those people. If you have status,
• 57:03
Speaker 1: they roll out the red carpet for you. So um,
• 57:06
Speaker 1: you know, the higher you are on the status level,
• 57:08
Speaker 1: the more likely you are to get a first class upgrade.
• 57:10
Speaker 1: And let me tell you, sitting sitting in the coach,
• 57:13
  Speaker 1: it's it's a dehumanizing experience. You know, you're you're sitting
• 57:19
Speaker 1: there and I have you know, I'm not a huge
• 57:21
Speaker 1: but I have fairly cart. The cart comes, the cart,
• 57:26
Speaker 1: the cart every single time, bam in the shoulder every
• 57:30
Speaker 1: single time. And then you got this guy next to
• 57:32
Speaker 1: you in the middle seat who's like six pounds and
• 57:36
Speaker 1: he's spilling over into your seat. You're trying to work
• 57:38
Speaker 1: on your laptop and the guy in front of you
• 57:40
Speaker 1: is putting down, is reclining, and you're you're right like
• 57:44
Speaker 1: and you're going like this, it's impossible. Right. I have
• 57:47
Speaker 1: two good stories for you in recent memory. All Right,
• 57:49
  Speaker 1: I'm racing to make a flight out of l A
• 57:53
Speaker 1: racing and they're like, you know when they do the
• 57:55
Speaker 1: name on the on the thing, like Mr Shroger. We're
• 57:57
Speaker 1: about to close the doors and I get to the
• 57:59
Speaker 1: gate and there's a line of like of like you know,
• 58:02
Speaker 1: ten people, and I'm last on the line. I'm like fine,
• 58:05
Speaker 1: I'm fine, and I put my thing in and the
• 58:08
Speaker 1: woman at the gate like lights up. She's like, oh
• 58:09
Speaker 1: my god, thank you for being diamond. Am I go, no,
• 58:11
Speaker 1: no, no no problem, like, no, no big deal, no big deal.
• 58:14
  Speaker 1: I walk on and I've got a I've got a
• 58:16
Speaker 1: carry on bag and I go into the first class
• 58:18
Speaker 1: where I got upgraded to because of my diamond status,
• 58:21
Speaker 1: and I'm about to put it up and I'm last
• 58:24
Speaker 1: one on the plane and the lovely flight attendants like, sir,
• 58:27
Speaker 1: you're gonna have to check that, and I go, oh no, no, no, no, no,
• 58:31
Speaker 1: I'm diamond. And she looked at me and said Okay,
• 58:34
Speaker 1: put it right there. You deserve it. Thank you for
• 58:36
Speaker 1: your thank you for your service, as if I was,
• 58:38
Speaker 1: as you know, thank you for your service. Please please.
• 58:43
Speaker 1: You know what's sick too is sometimes when I am
• 58:46
Speaker 1: in coach, they come by and they give you this,
• 58:48
Speaker 1: uh they give it this a chocolate bar, and you know,
• 58:51
Speaker 1: and they say, oh, thank you, you know, thank you
• 58:53
Speaker 1: for all your your your service or whatever you're thinking.
• 58:58
Speaker 1: And the times that they don't do that, I look
• 59:00
Speaker 1: at him, I'm like, don't you got a chocolate bar
• 59:02
Speaker 1: for me? I mean, I want them. I want to
• 59:06
Speaker 1: say thank you for flying, like I want acknowledgement. But
• 59:10
Speaker 1: really it's about the first class upgrades. That's why I
• 59:12
Speaker 1: do it. And I was explaining this to the guys
• 59:14
Speaker 1: on Saturday night at a production meeting, and our producer
• 59:19
Speaker 1: Richie Zience was calling me Marco Polo and which was funny.
• 59:23
Speaker 1: But the like KB and Greg Olsen and they don't
• 59:28
Speaker 1: know those guys are flying first class their That's what
• 59:30
Speaker 1: I said. I'm like, you think Craig Olson's ever sat
• 59:32
Speaker 1: in coach, That's what I'm saying. I was like, if
• 59:35
Speaker 1: I had, you know, if I had a first class
• 59:39
  Speaker 1: like that, I would, but I can't. So I got
• 59:42
Speaker 1: receiving yards. And you know, maybe you know all things
• 59:46
Speaker 1: hied in ho many year or whatever it is. You know,
• 59:49
Speaker 1: maybe I would be on that list too, but I'm not.
• 59:51
Speaker 1: My My only other story that you'll love is this,
• 59:53
Speaker 1: My wife travels with me sometimes and like she sees
• 59:56
Speaker 1: a version of me that she does not like. It
• 59:59
Speaker 1: is a version of me that she is disgusted by.
• 1:00:02
Speaker 1: She thinks, I'm just this this hard. Like she calls
• 1:00:04
Speaker 1: an airport Peter because I walk in and I'm telling you,
• 1:00:08
Speaker 1: they're like, all right, we'll be doing boarding in like
• 1:00:10
Speaker 1: fifteen minutes. And she's like, I gotta use the restaurant. Like,
• 1:00:12
Speaker 1: you're not gonna be sorry. We're not missing that first.
• 1:00:15
Speaker 1: We're not missing our group. I'm not walking with group two.
• 1:00:17
Speaker 1: I cannot get on group. You are getting right on
• 1:00:19
Speaker 1: this gate. You're sitting right here. She's like, stop it.
• 1:00:21
Speaker 1: I'm going to get a tollbar own bar from Hudson
• 1:00:23
Speaker 1: News and like you no, no, we are not missing
• 1:00:26
Speaker 1: group on. And there she's like, they still have to
• 1:00:28
Speaker 1: do the pre boarding and they got to do the
• 1:00:30
Speaker 1: you know, the people with the you know, the need
• 1:00:33
Speaker 1: extra help and they have the military service. I go Erica.
• 1:00:36
Speaker 1: You're not going anywhere. Hold your pe in, you're not
• 1:00:39
Speaker 1: getting your food. We're sitting right here. You had an
• 1:00:41
Speaker 1: hour in the airport to do all that. We are
• 1:00:43
Speaker 1: not getting boarded. No one is getting on that plane
• 1:00:45
Speaker 1: before me. I am using my servant, my my status. Um,
• 1:00:49
Speaker 1: I become a different person. But there are a few
• 1:00:52
Speaker 1: kindred spirits out there. So when I heard you were
• 1:00:53
Speaker 1: going through Okay, Nawa to get to Seattle from San Francisco,
• 1:00:57
Speaker 1: I said, Thorne, you were my brother, my brother in arms.
• 1:01:00
Speaker 1: I'm right there with you. I had a similar story
• 1:01:03
Speaker 1: where my whole life, you know, I'm I'm standing there
• 1:01:06
Speaker 1: waiting board and they always say if you have children,
• 1:01:08
Speaker 1: you can get on, right And I always thought, man,
• 1:01:11
Speaker 1: I can't wait for that. So one of the first
• 1:01:13
Speaker 1: times I'm flying my wife and my young son. At
• 1:01:16
Speaker 1: that point, my wife decides to go to the restroom
• 1:01:20
Speaker 1: and where I'm like, what no, And so I gotta
• 1:01:24
Speaker 1: take him. I'm not going to change his diaper on
• 1:01:26
Speaker 1: the plane. All this stuff. I'm like, okay, we're the
• 1:01:29
Speaker 1: first one on. Sure enough, They're like, if you have
• 1:01:32
Speaker 1: little kids, you can get on the plane, and I'm
• 1:01:34
  Speaker 1: just I'm I don't know what. I'm just out of
• 1:01:36
Speaker 1: my mind. I'm out of my mind. I'm like my
• 1:01:38
Speaker 1: whole life. This is the moment I've been waiting for
• 1:01:40
Speaker 1: my whole life. And that is why I had the kids.
• 1:01:42
Speaker 1: This is the only reason I had the kid. This
• 1:01:45
Speaker 1: was it. Yeah, she um, she thinks I'm a little
• 1:01:48
Speaker 1: nuts when it comes to it, but you know whatever,
• 1:01:51
Speaker 1: she you know, she's great, She's awesome with it. But yeah,
• 1:01:54
Speaker 1: traveling with her, you know, I've trained her, and I've
• 1:01:56
Speaker 1: trained the kids to have two boys. I've trained them.
• 1:01:59
Speaker 1: We go through security like we are awesome through security,
• 1:02:02
Speaker 1: and they know, they know the whole situation and and
• 1:02:05
Speaker 1: it's good. But they they also want to sit in
• 1:02:07
Speaker 1: first class. And I'm like, I'm sorry, sorry, okay. So
• 1:02:13
Speaker 1: that's that's a good airline discussion real quick before we
• 1:02:16
Speaker 1: wrap it. There's nothing that I find um more, I
• 1:02:20
Speaker 1: don't know what the word is, like discouraging or unsettling
• 1:02:23
Speaker 1: or I feel less successful. Then when I go into
• 1:02:25
Speaker 1: that first class and I get the upgrade and I'm
• 1:02:27
Speaker 1: sitting there and I see, you know, four seats, two
• 1:02:31
Speaker 1: parents and and two kids, and I'm like, gosh, does
• 1:02:34
Speaker 1: that six year old? No, does he understand just how
• 1:02:37
Speaker 1: good that is? And it's he gonna grow up to
• 1:02:40
Speaker 1: be a different person because he was flying first classes
• 1:02:42
Speaker 1: a six year old, Like, like, we we cut our teeth, dude,
• 1:02:45
Speaker 1: we sat in thirty two. Way we turned this. That kid,
• 1:02:49
Speaker 1: that kid with the iPad, that kild kick in my seat.
• 1:02:51
Speaker 1: I don't even mind the kick in the seat in
• 1:02:53
Speaker 1: the iPad. It's just the entitlement that he gets to
• 1:02:55
Speaker 1: sit in first class while you know I had to
• 1:02:58
Speaker 1: wait until I was thirty eight years old to get
• 1:02:59
Speaker 1: that upgrade. It's the same thing if people, if you
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: can't relate to that, let me let me give you this.
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: It's the same thing as you take your kid to
• 1:03:07
Speaker 1: the ball game, right do you do you get the
• 1:03:09
Speaker 1: best seats behind home play? No, you go up to
• 1:03:12
Speaker 1: the right field bleachers and you make them sit in
• 1:03:14
Speaker 1: the nosebleeds for like five, six, seven game a couple
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: of seasons worth. So he knows what a privilege it
• 1:03:21
Speaker 1: is to sit behind the dugout, you know what I mean.
• 1:03:23
Speaker 1: I took my kid up there and he's like, wow,
• 1:03:25
  Speaker 1: I can't see anything, Like yeah, that's the point that's
• 1:03:27
Speaker 1: the point. You can't see anything. So when we finally
• 1:03:30
Speaker 1: do go sit behind the behind the dugout, we do
• 1:03:32
Speaker 1: sit behind home plate, you'll really enjoy it. You really
• 1:03:34
Speaker 1: appreciate it. The same thing with find I don't get
• 1:03:37
Speaker 1: I have a lot of airline rules and we probably
• 1:03:39
Speaker 1: you probably don't want to hear them, but one of them,
• 1:03:41
Speaker 1: this is the best stuff we thought. One of the
• 1:03:44
Speaker 1: A number one is kids do not sit in first class.
• 1:03:47
Speaker 1: It must be it has to be like an emergency
• 1:03:49
Speaker 1: or something, because they don't understand what it means to
• 1:03:53
Speaker 1: be in that wide seat and not have your shoulder hit.
• 1:03:56
Speaker 1: They just don't get it. It's not their fault. They
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: just don't belong there. They don't get it. But yeah,
• 1:04:01
Speaker 1: that's that's right at the top of the list. I
• 1:04:02
  Speaker 1: can't especially if I don't get an upgrade and I
• 1:04:06
Speaker 1: walk through and I'm like, oh, there's a five year
• 1:04:08
Speaker 1: old sitting there. What do you think when you get
• 1:04:10
Speaker 1: on there and you don't have the upgrade and you
• 1:04:11
Speaker 1: see one of the uh, one of the you know,
• 1:04:14
Speaker 1: a flight attendant from a different flight sitting up there,
• 1:04:16
Speaker 1: or you see that one. That one hurts. That hurts
• 1:04:19
Speaker 1: anytime an the fly first class. I do, but I
• 1:04:23
Speaker 1: mean I'm a long time paying I've paid my dues, man,
• 1:04:29
Speaker 1: I've paid my dues. Yeah, anytime, any any I'm always
• 1:04:34
Speaker 1: And that's another reason why having status is important, because
• 1:04:36
Speaker 1: I check in for the flight and if I'm not
• 1:04:38
Speaker 1: immediately upgraded, and I go onto wait list and I
• 1:04:41
Speaker 1: checked that wait list, and if I'm not number if
• 1:04:43
Speaker 1: I'm not number one on the wait list, wed me too.
• 1:04:49
Speaker 1: I'm like, who is this guy? Who is it? Who?
• 1:04:52
Speaker 1: So I'm looking at the I'm getting in line. I'm
• 1:04:53
Speaker 1: looking like, who's who? Who's the one that got the upgrade.
• 1:04:56
Speaker 1: It's like when you were in high school and and
• 1:04:58
Speaker 1: like you'd be like the best player on your team
• 1:05:00
Speaker 1: or whatever, and then you hear about the kid from
• 1:05:02
Speaker 1: the other town. I want who is that kid? No doubt? Yeah,
• 1:05:06
Speaker 1: so doorn Berry. In addition to flying, you do a
• 1:05:09
Speaker 1: great job every week. You do a lot of those
• 1:05:11
Speaker 1: stats and the research on that number one Fox game.

Speaker 1: All right, thanks quickly. Plug plug your podcast, plug your stuff.
• 1:05:38

• 1:05:41
Speaker 1: my my day job. My day job work for rotal

• 1:06:17
  Speaker 1: I'll do it. I'll do it, wrote a wire. I
• 1:06:19
Speaker 1: would have said, take Brock take brock Purty first. Over all,
• 1:06:22
Speaker 1: that would back in the spring, and um, you're the
• 1:06:25
Speaker 1: man wrote a wire everybody check it out. And that
• 1:06:27
Speaker 1: right there is Jason Thornberry. Uh, Jason, thanks dude, thorns
• 1:06:32
Speaker 1: the Man. Uh, what a fun podcast for having here.
• 1:06:35
Speaker 1: Lots of voices, but I wanted to end it, Aaron. Um,
• 1:06:38
Speaker 1: we said before last week's episode or that we would
• 1:06:41
Speaker 1: watch the final two White Lotus episodes. Spoiler alert. If
• 1:06:44
Speaker 1: you haven't watched any of the season, you haven't watched
• 1:06:46
Speaker 1: the finale. Spoiler alert. We're gonna have a quick, quick
• 1:06:51
Speaker 1: discussion on it, Aaron. I want to know from one
• 1:06:55
Speaker 1: to ten your feelings on the finale. Did it? Did
• 1:06:57
Speaker 1: it fulfill all the expectations for you? Yeah? I loved it.
• 1:07:00
Speaker 1: I mean I think that uh, having twenty four hours
• 1:07:05
Speaker 1: now to digest it, I think I preferred season one
• 1:07:08
Speaker 1: over season two actually, but the finale was great. Had
• 1:07:12
Speaker 1: like probably the funniest moment of the season as well
• 1:07:16
Speaker 1: as the best acting moment, and so the finale was
• 1:07:20
Speaker 1: like top notch for sure. I say season two by
• 1:07:22
Speaker 1: a landslide over season one. And I thought, as funny
• 1:07:25
Speaker 1: as you might think, the Tanya scene was I thought
• 1:07:28
Speaker 1: the tension of those ten minutes, I was on the
• 1:07:32
Speaker 1: edge of my seat. That was like any thriller I've
• 1:07:34
Speaker 1: ever seen. I was far more, um, I guess, dramatically
• 1:07:38
Speaker 1: affected than comedically. I thought I saw the fear in
• 1:07:40
Speaker 1: Porsche's eyes when she was in that car with Jack,
• 1:07:42
Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is really scary. I don't know
• 1:07:45
Speaker 1: where this is going. Um and Quentin and his crew,
• 1:07:49
Speaker 1: I thought that was that was some of the great
• 1:07:51
Speaker 1: villain Uh, you know acting, we've seen that actor. I'm
• 1:07:55
Speaker 1: going Tom Tom Huer, Tom Hollander. I am not familiar
• 1:08:00
Speaker 1: with him. Are you familiar with his work? So he
• 1:08:03
Speaker 1: has done um god, he's been in like a lot
• 1:08:07
Speaker 1: of TV shows as well as like uh uh Pride
• 1:08:11
Speaker 1: and Prejudice so British, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um. He
• 1:08:15
Speaker 1: is also a theater guy. I mean, he's he's very talented.
• 1:08:19
Speaker 1: He was he just oozed like slides terror, terror and
• 1:08:26
Speaker 1: and in the beginning, like you see him as this,
• 1:08:29
Speaker 1: he's sort of doting on on Jennifer Coolidge and um,
• 1:08:34
Speaker 1: you do get a little undercurrent of like this can't
• 1:08:36
Speaker 1: be all good. Yeah, And it keeps going and it
• 1:08:38
Speaker 1: keeps going, and like the I mean, I love the
• 1:08:42
Speaker 1: them at the opera and oh is that the Queen?
• 1:08:45
Speaker 1: So there's so much Yeah, Um, he's incredible. H the
• 1:08:49
Speaker 1: guy who played Jack, Like, where did he come from?
• 1:08:52
Speaker 1: I have no idea. So what I heard was what
• 1:08:54
Speaker 1: he's singing, that thing about the bubbles and and that
• 1:08:56
Speaker 1: through the town. Apparently that's the west Ham United song.
• 1:09:01
Speaker 1: And he's like this brash, you know. And then when
• 1:09:06
Speaker 1: Porsche calls him out on you know, the stuff with
• 1:09:09
Speaker 1: the uncle, and you see the whole look in his
• 1:09:11
Speaker 1: eyes change, and like you get the feeling that when
• 1:09:15
Speaker 1: he was talking about being in a hole and you
• 1:09:17
Speaker 1: know that these guys are not guys you mess with
• 1:09:19
Speaker 1: Quentin and those boys, and I thought that it was
• 1:09:22
Speaker 1: just terrifying. Um, the m v P of the finale,
• 1:09:28
Speaker 1: or have an MVP of this season for you? Because
• 1:09:29
Speaker 1: I love this show. I think it's gonna win all
• 1:09:31
Speaker 1: the Emmys, and I think they're all gonna win awards.
• 1:09:33
Speaker 1: But if you're not watching White Lotus, just it's six episodes,
• 1:09:37
Speaker 1: seven episodes, it's fantastic. Um, Aaron, you'r m VP of
• 1:09:41
Speaker 1: this season. So I want to pick Daphne Megan Faye
• 1:09:46
Speaker 1: because I thought she was someone who was so unassuming.
• 1:09:50
Speaker 1: At the beginning, I thought she was one of the
• 1:09:52
Speaker 1: characters I disliked the most after episode one and I
• 1:09:56
Speaker 1: thought I had her figured out and I percented not
• 1:10:00
Speaker 1: and she I mean like the scene with her on
• 1:10:02
Speaker 1: the beach with him, the look in her eyes, her
• 1:10:05
Speaker 1: face changed, it's all visual amazing, and that was like,
• 1:10:09
Speaker 1: she's another theater person. She she started off on Broadway.
• 1:10:13
Speaker 1: I loved her so much. I do think you have
• 1:10:16
  Speaker 1: to consider Jennifer Coolidge for m v P. And I
• 1:10:20
Speaker 1: also think, um Lucy, Lucia and Mia you have to
• 1:10:26
Speaker 1: be in there too. So that's that's where I'm going.
• 1:10:28
Speaker 1: I really want to give it to Daphne. I think, yeah,
• 1:10:30
Speaker 1: I think it's Daphne. The actress's name is what Megan
• 1:10:33
Speaker 1: Fayhey or Morgan Faye I think I think it's never
• 1:10:35
Speaker 1: had seen her before, never had heard of her. And
• 1:10:38
Speaker 1: I was listening to a podcast, I think the Prestige
• 1:10:41
Speaker 1: TV podcast with Bill Simmons and Mallory Rubin and Joanna
• 1:10:45
Speaker 1: and they were saying that she's a very well known,
• 1:10:48
Speaker 1: decorated theater actor and um wonderful musicals and has a
• 1:10:53
Speaker 1: beautiful singing voice and all that like, but I thought
• 1:10:56
Speaker 1: the facial stuff from her was amazing. So now quick questions. One,
• 1:11:01
Speaker 1: it goes without saying, I guess now, but I wasn't
• 1:11:03
Speaker 1: sure at the time. Um Ethan played by Will Arp
• 1:11:06
Speaker 1: and Daphne played by the aforementioned Uh Megan Faye. They
• 1:11:11
Speaker 1: go to that little island. They do they do do
• 1:11:14
Speaker 1: the deed? Is that what you that what we're supposed
• 1:11:16
  Speaker 1: to thank? Yes? I think so. Uh. There's a there's
• 1:11:20
Speaker 1: this little thing on HBO after the episode UM where
• 1:11:23
Speaker 1: Mike Waite talks about it and he's kind of flipping
• 1:11:25
Speaker 1: about it like it's we can assume what we want
• 1:11:29
Speaker 1: and um, and yes, the assumption is yes. But I
• 1:11:32
Speaker 1: think the main thing is like that trip to the
• 1:11:34
Speaker 1: island where Ethan goes and he doesn't stop, and he
• 1:11:38
Speaker 1: keeps looking back and he keeps walking. That is when
• 1:11:41
Speaker 1: like the two couples transition and suddenly Ethan becomes Camp
• 1:11:47
Speaker 1: becomes d that's good. They merge and they're they're so judgmental.
• 1:11:52
Speaker 1: He and Harper the entire first half of the series,
• 1:11:56
Speaker 1: and then by the end of it they're no better.
• 1:11:59
Speaker 1: They're in the same position. And it seemed like Ethan
• 1:12:00
Speaker 1: needed to do that to be able to look at
• 1:12:02
Speaker 1: Harper and obviously have that moment with her at the end,
• 1:12:05
Speaker 1: but like they're cuddling in the air report at the end,
• 1:12:07
Speaker 1: Like it almost reminded me of the first season when
• 1:12:10
Speaker 1: you had, uh, I guess it was what's your name
• 1:12:13
Speaker 1: Alexis Didario? What's her name? Yeah? Yeah, her character. I'm
• 1:12:18
Speaker 1: terrible with names, but she and you think she's gonna
• 1:12:21
Speaker 1: have the courage to make a big change and walk
• 1:12:23
Speaker 1: away and all this stuff, but she doesn't either. There
• 1:12:26
Speaker 1: was something I do feel like season one, everyone kind
• 1:12:29
Speaker 1: of left and kind of was in almost the same
• 1:12:31
Speaker 1: state as when they got there, and in season two
• 1:12:34
Speaker 1: it did feel like some characters sort of fell back
• 1:12:37
Speaker 1: into the same Like you have the three guys the
• 1:12:40
Speaker 1: generational thing with the woman walking by them in line
• 1:12:43
Speaker 1: and they all look so some of it is like, oh, yeah,
• 1:12:45
Speaker 1: we have almost appreciative Albis, like yeah I got played
• 1:12:48
Speaker 1: just down the drains, but like whatever, yeah I got played.
• 1:12:54
Speaker 1: But but there is something nice kind of seeing Ethan
• 1:12:57
Speaker 1: and Harper like maybe they did change a little bit,
• 1:12:59
Speaker 1: whether or not it's good and whether or not they're
• 1:13:01
Speaker 1: proud of the change. Uh, you know. One of the
• 1:13:04
Speaker 1: big things that Daphne said is like, what is it
• 1:13:06
Speaker 1: that makes you happy? And it's not something that you
• 1:13:10
Speaker 1: can necessarily judge for an outside relationship. And to say
• 1:13:13
Speaker 1: like they didn't vote their lovey dovey in public, so
• 1:13:16
Speaker 1: they can't possibly be happy, well maybe they are. And like,
• 1:13:20
Speaker 1: you know, the conspiracy theory online or the thought is
• 1:13:24
Speaker 1: that that kid is not Cameron's kid, and that's an
• 1:13:27
Speaker 1: illegitimate kid. It's the trainer's kid because a she said
• 1:13:30
Speaker 1: earlier on in the season, blonde hair, blue eyes was
• 1:13:33
Speaker 1: the trainer And then she shows the photo to Harper
• 1:13:35
  Speaker 1: and she's like, you're showing me a picture you're a kid.
• 1:13:37
Speaker 1: She's like, oh, am, I never mind. And then he
• 1:13:39
Speaker 1: is so angry and annoyed and in such disdain when
• 1:13:43
Speaker 1: she's like, come say hello to your son and he's like, oh,
• 1:13:46
Speaker 1: well he's flossing. Um did you read it that way too?
• 1:13:49
Speaker 1: So I had this conversation with some friends the other day,
• 1:13:52
Speaker 1: and I personally am not convinced, just by him being
• 1:13:55
Speaker 1: upset at flossing and having to stop. If I'm in
• 1:13:58
Speaker 1: the middle of flossing and I have to stop doing something,
• 1:14:00
Speaker 1: I'm gonna forget what tooth time on. It's gonna be
• 1:14:02
Speaker 1: hard to go back. And I just think, you know,
• 1:14:05
  Speaker 1: they've had maybe a rough dinner and he's just a
• 1:14:09
Speaker 1: little preturbed with that. I love the mystery around the
• 1:14:13
Speaker 1: trainer and the showing of the children and what does
• 1:14:15
Speaker 1: that mean? Does that just mean like, does she not
• 1:14:18
Speaker 1: really have a trainer? It's just the kids that are
• 1:14:20
Speaker 1: this thing that she finds happiness from. Is the trainer
• 1:14:22
Speaker 1: actually the father of the children? I mean, I loved it.
• 1:14:24
Speaker 1: I thought that the whole thing was great, and I
• 1:14:27
Speaker 1: love having that unanswered mystery about the trainer and yes
• 1:14:31
Speaker 1: or no with the father last one, Greg gets all
• 1:14:34
Speaker 1: the money. So did you watch the thing at the
• 1:14:38
Speaker 1: end with with Mike White? Did? Yeah? And so he
• 1:14:40
Speaker 1: he has like the little comment of you know, maybe
• 1:14:43
Speaker 1: they'll be able to trace it back to Greg Um.
• 1:14:45
Speaker 1: I don't know, because that's not satisfying. I hate that dude.
• 1:14:50
Speaker 1: But maybe that's White lotus in a nutshell, that that's
• 1:14:52
Speaker 1: how the world works. Yeah, it's Abitania is not a
• 1:14:55
Speaker 1: likable character either. I mean, she treats Porsha terribly. She
• 1:14:58
Speaker 1: treats the woman from the first season horribly, there's nothing
• 1:15:01
Speaker 1: re deeming, and you're rooting for at the end because
• 1:15:03
Speaker 1: you just wanted to work, you know. And that's like
• 1:15:05
Speaker 1: one of the things about great TV is you change
• 1:15:08
Speaker 1: your feelings about people throughout your rooting for someone, and
• 1:15:11
Speaker 1: then you're not, and then you're rooting against everyone. And
• 1:15:14
Speaker 1: then like you thought you were rooting for Tanya and
• 1:15:17
Speaker 1: then the phone call she has with Porsche, and then
• 1:15:20
Speaker 1: you're suddenly like, wait, am I rooting for you right now?
• 1:15:22
Speaker 1: And now I don't know? Yeah, so, uh, I don't know.
• 1:15:25
Speaker 1: It's uh. Greg is a fascinating character with how horrible
• 1:15:30
Speaker 1: he is, but very well done with everyone on that
• 1:15:33
Speaker 1: show loved it, and I'm so glad I loved it.
• 1:15:36
Speaker 1: I love season one last year, I love season two.
• 1:15:39
Speaker 1: I told you that when I was at mcveigh's house
• 1:15:40
Speaker 1: over the bye week, I made him and his wife
• 1:15:42
Speaker 1: Ronica watched season one. I'm gonna let him get through
• 1:15:45
Speaker 1: this season. I'm gonna make him watch season two. Maybe
• 1:15:46
Speaker 1: we'll have him on the podcast to give a full
• 1:15:48
Speaker 1: review of White Lotus, but uh gosh, this is a
• 1:15:51
Speaker 1: three hour podcast. Guys. I hope you enjoyed it. You
