- 0:30Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents
- 0:33Folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:35story. I'm your host, Dustin.
- 0:38Today we are back in the book of Azorian folk tales written down
- 0:41by Elsie Spicer Eels. In the first story, we hear how
- 0:44well, locking up your daughter works, and in the second we
- 0:48learn about Jupiter's granddaughter and how she's
- 0:50still around in the Azores. OK, let's begin.
- 0:55Jose the Beast Slayer, the story of the boy who grew up in the
- 0:59forest. There once was a king who had a
- 1:03little daughter. He went to the wise men of the
- 1:05forest to learn how to best bring her up, and this is what
- 1:08he was told. For 20 years you must keep your
- 1:11daughter in the tower of the forest.
- 1:13It should have no door, only a little window which you may pass
- 1:17food to her. You must give her meat which has
- 1:20no bones in it. The king ordered a tower to be
- 1:23constructed in the deep forest. It had no door and only a little
- 1:27window. Here the Princess was placed
- 1:31every day. Food was passed to her through a
- 1:33little window. The king himself took charge of
- 1:36this, so that he might be sure that there was no meat given to
- 1:39her which had bones in it. The years flew by, and at last
- 1:43the 20 year period was nearly up.
- 1:46Then the king went away one day and left the servants to carry
- 1:49food to the Princess. They were careless and gave her
- 1:52meat which had a bone in it. The little Princess had grown
- 1:56very tired of being shut up in the tower in the forest.
- 1:59Ah, she said, when she discovered the bone in the meat
- 2:02at last. I have something with which to
- 2:04make this window a little larger.
- 2:07I've tried in vain to make it bigger with my finger nails.
- 2:10She used the bone to dig away the wall on each side of the
- 2:13window, and soon the little opening had grown so large that
- 2:17the Princess could lean her head out of it and look up at the
- 2:19lofty trees. That very day, a Duke passed
- 2:23that way on a hunting expedition and saw the beautiful Princess
- 2:26in the tower. He fell in love with her
- 2:29immediately. Now that the Princess had
- 2:32someone to help her make the hole larger, it was an easy
- 2:35matter to make it big enough to escape.
- 2:38That very night she ran away with the Duke.
- 2:41When the king returned from his journey, he found the tower in
- 2:44the forest entirely empty. There was nothing but a yawning
- 2:48hole to tell him of his daughter's escape.
- 2:51He tried in vain to find out what had become of her, but
- 2:54there was no person who could tell him anything about her.
- 2:58The Princess had gone with the Duke across the great river
- 3:01which no one else knew how to cross.
- 3:03She lived in a big cave on the rocks, and after all the years
- 3:07in the tower, it seemed like a wonderful home indeed.
- 3:11She would never tired of admiring the trees and flowers
- 3:13of the forest and listening to the songs of the birds.
- 3:17When at last her baby son was born, she thought that she was
- 3:20the happiest person in the whole world.
- 3:24Now when the baby was two years old, the Duke decided that they
- 3:27must take him to a Hermitage to be baptized.
- 3:30They went down to the great river, and he carried his little
- 3:33son across it in safety. Then he returned for the
- 3:36Princess, but on his way his foot slipped and he fell into
- 3:40the strong river. The strong current bore him
- 3:43swiftly away, leaving the Princess on one side of the
- 3:45river and her little son on the other.
- 3:49How shall I get across? Cried the Princess when she saw
- 3:52what happened. Don't worry, Mother replied.
- 3:55The child I'll come and get. You.
- 3:59To her amazement, he crossed the great river in safety and
- 4:03bravely escorted his mother to the other side despite her tears
- 4:06and cries of fear. Well done my son, she said when
- 4:11they were on the other bank. You are indeed a son to be proud
- 4:15of. They went to a church and the
- 4:18boy was baptized. Jose the Beast Slayer was the
- 4:21name he chose. Then they wandered on, till at
- 4:24last they came to a house with a door with which a little window
- 4:28had been cut. The boy thrust in his arm and
- 4:31opened the door as if it had been his own.
- 4:34Walk in, mother dear. Were his words.
- 4:37Together they entered the house and together they explored the
- 4:40various rooms. There was nobody there and there
- 4:43was nothing to eat. Accordingly, Jose went out
- 4:46begging. He asked Almes at the royal
- 4:49palace and there he was given money to buy food.
- 4:53There was even enough leftover to pay for a gun.
- 4:57Now that he owned a gun, there was no need of begging any more.
- 5:00He shot plenty of game for his mother and what was left he
- 5:04carried to the royal palace to give to the king.
- 5:08One day in the deep forest, he entered a cave where the giant
- 5:11of the forest lived. What are you doing here, little
- 5:15penny chicken? Asked the huge giant as he
- 5:18frowned down at Jose. I may be a little penny chicken,
- 5:22but I'm not in the least afraid of giants.
- 5:24The boy replied boldly. What a little penny chicken like
- 5:31you is not afraid of me. Cried the giant as he picked him
- 5:34up roughly and set him on his neck.
- 5:37Jose seized the giant's long beard and drew it around his
- 5:40neck so tightly that the giant fell to the floor dead.
- 5:44Then Jose seized one of the money bags and ran home with it
- 5:46to his mother. You must carry some of this to
- 5:49the king, said his mother, when she saw it and heard his story.
- 5:53Accordingly, Jose carried the money as a gift to the king who
- 5:57was. Bring me all this.
- 5:59Asked the king when he saw it. A little lad, replied the King's
- 6:02servants. Leave him to me.
- 6:05I'd like to see him, said the king.
- 6:09Accordingly, the boy was led before the throne.
- 6:13What is your name, my lad? Asked the king kindly.
- 6:17I am called Jose the Beast Slayer, Your Majesty.
- 6:20Replied the boy as he bowed low before the throne.
- 6:24Who are your parents? Asked the king.
- 6:26My father is dead, replied Jose. And my mother is a Princess who
- 6:30ran away from the tower in the forest.
- 6:33Jose had often heard the story of his mother's life in the
- 6:36tower. It was the tale that he liked
- 6:38best of all. At the boy's words, the king
- 6:42startled and looked at him sharply.
- 6:45Tell me about this tower. He said eagerly.
- 6:48It was a tower in the deep forest.
- 6:50Replied Jose. It had no door, only a little
- 6:53window through which food? Was passed to her.
- 6:56She could not have any meat with any bones.
- 6:59This was because the wise man of the forest had told her father
- 7:02that it was the best way to bring her up one day.
- 7:04Her. Father went away.
- 7:06And the servants gave her meat with a bone in it, and I always
- 7:10suspected. Something like that interrupted
- 7:12the king. Jose looked at him in surprise.
- 7:17Were you there? He asked.
- 7:19The King nodded. Go on with your story, my little
- 7:22boy. Jose told the circumstances of
- 7:26his mother's escape from the tower, just as she had so often
- 7:29described them to him. Tears were running down the
- 7:32King's cheeks when the last the story had ended.
- 7:36My. Lad, you are my own grandson.
- 7:38Cried the king as he took him in his arms.
- 7:41Proud I am too, that I have a grandson like you.
- 7:44Where is your mother now? My mother is in the house in the
- 7:48forest, replied Jose. It is she who told me to carry
- 7:51the money to the king. Why did she never come to me?
- 7:55Asked the father. She was afraid she'd be punished
- 7:59for running away from the tower without any door, Was Jose's
- 8:01reply. When the Princess was brought to
- 8:05the royal palace, there was a great feast which lasted for
- 8:08three days and three nights. Then the king sent his men with
- 8:11Jose into the forest to The Cave where the giant had lived.
- 8:15They brought home so many bags of gold that it required the
- 8:18entire Royal Army to transport it.
- 8:21Years passed, and when the old king died, it was Jose the beast
- 8:25Slayer, who was the king of the land.
- 8:28The End. OK and story #2 The Princess of
- 8:53the Lost Island. The story of Euphemia and her
- 8:57good deeds. Euphemia was the daughter of
- 9:00King Atlas and the granddaughter of the great God Jupiter.
- 9:05She was more beautiful than her fifteen sisters, though they
- 9:08were all lovely. All the ten sons of Neptune
- 9:11admired her charms and sought to marry her, but she would wed
- 9:15none of them. There was, in truth, no one in
- 9:19all the world who was worthy of her.
- 9:22Euphemia herself knew this and preferred to remain a star in
- 9:26the constellation of the Hiades, her sisters.
- 9:28Rather than wed an unworthy husband, Euphemia became a
- 9:34Christian, they say, through the efforts of the cherubim.
- 9:38She decided to come down to earth and go about doing good
- 9:41deeds. Accordingly, she came to the
- 9:44island called the Seven Cities. Now in the Island of the Seven
- 9:48Cities there lived a rich and venerable Christian Prince.
- 9:52He adopted Euphemia as his own daughter.
- 9:54She was called Princess Euphemia of the Island of the Seven
- 9:57Cities. As soon as she came to the
- 10:01island, all pain and misery vanished from it.
- 10:04Joy reigned, banquets were held, songs were sung, gay dances were
- 10:08danced. It was if every day there were
- 10:11feast day. Time passed, many changes came
- 10:16to the island, but Euphemia herself remained, always young
- 10:19and always beautiful. One day, 2 priests from the
- 10:23outside world visited the island.
- 10:26They saw the magnificent palaces, the beautiful gardens.
- 10:292 tame lions followed them about.
- 10:32They were as gentle as if they had been dogs.
- 10:36We are in the celestial region, said one priest to the other.
- 10:39Let's stay here forever, said the other priest.
- 10:42It is indeed a paradise of which we have dreamed.
- 10:47The two priests had come in a tiny launch from a large boat.
- 10:52We should return and tell our friends about the celestial
- 10:54region, they agreed. Tomorrow we will all explore
- 10:57this wonderful country. It was almost dark when the two
- 11:01priests reached their ship. By the little launch, they
- 11:05reported all the things they had seen and heard in the new land.
- 11:09The next morning, however, the island had entirely disappeared.
- 11:13The water stretched before their gaze with an unbroken rippling
- 11:17blue surface. What has become of our beautiful
- 11:21island? The good priests asked in
- 11:22amazement. We were anchored off the shore
- 11:25of one of the enchanted islands. Was the opinion of everybody.
- 11:29Euphemia, they say, has not yet disappeared entirely.
- 11:33She has changed her form. She is still found in the Azores
- 11:37and the plant called Solania, the flower of Saint Cosmo.
- 11:43She is still doing good deeds. Pain disappears when she comes,
- 11:47just as it did on the lost island.
- 11:50St. Cosmo, the patron state of all
- 11:52good physicians, could never have gained his reputation
- 11:55without her good deeds. The end.
- 12:20Wow, that second story was so beautiful.
- 12:22A granddaughter of Jupiter deciding that she was happier
- 12:24without a partner and deciding to dedicate herself to helping
- 12:27the people ease their pain. And the first story was quite
- 12:31sweet once I upped the age a little bit.
- 12:34She was originally 12. I made her 20.
- 12:37Just a little difference there. Also, I liked how the strong
- 12:40baby killed the giant. And it was sweet that the
- 12:42Princess reconciled with her father after he locked her up
- 12:45for two decades of her life. Still, I'm really enjoying these
- 12:49stories and the podcast Shout out is to the Teacher Think
- 12:53Aloud podcast hosted by Anna and Shay.
- 12:55This podcast focuses on teaching and ways for teachers to improve
- 12:58their teaching. I absolutely love their show and
- 13:02use it in my daily life to improve the quality of my
- 13:04content. And so if you like their show as
- 13:07much as I do, give them a like a rating and a review.
- 13:11And the listener shout out is to the central Chitlin city of
- 13:14Viiborg in Denmark. Viiborgh is a city in Central
- 13:18Yutland, the capital of both Viiborgh Municipality and the
- 13:22region of Mid T Holland. Viiborgh is also the seat of the
- 13:26Western High Court, the High Court for the Yutland Peninsula.
- 13:30Viiborgh Municipality is the second largest Danish
- 13:33municipality, covering 3.3% of the country's total land area.
- 13:37And so to my listener in Viiborgh, I say Tak OG could
- 13:40not. Thank you and good night.
