- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to another episode of Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. I'm still thinking about those pineapple buns from last time. They were so good. Luna: Oh, totally. I could go for one right now. But today, what are we learning? I'm ready for something new. Lucas: Today, let's head to the playground. We've talked about swings and slides, but what if you want to make a new friend there? Let's learn how to ask someone's name and introduce yourself. Luna: Ooh, that's practical. I always wanted to chat with other parents at the playground. So, how do I ask, what's your name? Lucas: Great question. In Cantonese, you say, It literally means, you are called what name. So, when you meet someone new, you can ask, Hmm, that's a mouthful. Let me try. Lucas: That's really good. You got the intonation right. Now, when they ask you back, you can say, 我叫... and then your name. So, 我叫 Luna. Luna: So, 我叫 Luna. That's easy. Luna. I like it. So, if someone asks me 你叫咩名, I just say 我叫 Luna. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to be extra friendly, you can start with a simple 你好, which means hello. We've used that before, but let's put it together. Luna. Nice. So, I can walk up to someone and say, 你好,我叫 Luna. And then ask, 你叫咩名. Lucas: Perfect. You've got the flow. Now, let's practice a tiny scene. Imagine I'm a new kid at the playground. You come up to me. Go ahead. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Oh, that was great. And I would answer, 我叫 Lucas. Nice to meet you. So, now you know how to ask and answer names. But there's another useful phrase: 我係... which also means I am... You can use it to introduce yourself in a slightly different way. For example, 我係 Lucas. Luna: 我係 Luna. So, 我叫 and 我係 both mean I am? What's the difference? Lucas: Great question. 我叫 is more like my name is, while 我係 is more like I am. You can use either, but 我叫 is more common when giving your name. Let's practice both. Say, 我叫 Luna. Now, 我係 Luna. Luna: 我叫 Luna. 我係 Luna. Hmm, they feel similar. I think I'll stick with 我叫 for now. But it's good to know both. Lucas: Definitely. And there's one more phrase that might come in handy: 你係邊個. That means who are you. But it's a bit more direct, so use it carefully. Usually, it's better to ask That sounds a bit blunt. I'll stick with 你叫咩名. So, we have 你好, 我叫, 你叫咩名, and 我係. Lucas: You got it. Now, let's do a quick review. Repeat after me. Lucas: And 我係 Luna. Luna: 我係 Luna. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's do a tiny conversation. I'll be the new kid. You approach me. Luna: Okay. Lucas. Nice to meet you. And then I might ask, 你係邊個? but that's a bit direct. Anyway, great job. You're ready to make friends at the playground. Luna: I love it. This is so useful. And by the way, if you're enjoying these lessons, a few of our listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's what keeps this podcast going and ad-free. So, if you've learned something today, consider supporting us there. No pressure though. Lucas: Yeah, we really appreciate anyone who helps out. It lets us keep making these small, focused episodes. Anyway, back to the playground. So, Luna, what if you want to ask about the person's friend? Like, is that your friend? Luna: Oh, that's a good next step. How do I say that? Lucas: That would be 佢係唔係你朋友? But let's save that for another episode. For today, focus on the basics: 你好, 我叫, 你叫咩名, and 我係. Practice those, and you'll be ready to meet someone new. Luna: Sounds good. I'll practice at the playground later. Thanks, Lucas! Lucas: You're welcome, Luna. And thanks to all our listeners for joining us today. Keep practicing, and see you next time on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo.
