- 1:59Now, I know that was a long kind of pitch there for you, right?
- 2:02But this is where I'm transitioning my career.
- 2:04So I have to try to do as much as possible to promote it.
- 2:07Hope you understand. And now let's actually get into
- 2:11some Elon Musk news because this is a pretty big deal.
- 2:16California with Tesla, They're facing a set back for robo
- 2:21taxis. Can Elon navigate the regulatory
- 2:25maze that is known as California?
- 2:28Lot of regulations. California Public Utilities
- 2:31Commission CPUC recently halted Tesla's application for a robo
- 2:36taxi permit. Tesla's application fell short
- 2:40in key regulatory requirements, including comprehensive details
- 2:44on safety measures, emergency responses, in plans for law
- 2:49enforcement interaction. The rejection marks a pretty big
- 2:54pause in Tesla's planned expansion into autonomous ride
- 2:57sharing services in California, already delayed multiple times
- 3:01by complex regulatory demands now.
- 3:05Tesla initially submitted its robotaxi permit in January 2025,
- 3:10seeking approval to operate fully autonomous vehicles
- 3:13commercially statewide, and the CPUC requested extensive
- 3:18documentation covering safety protocols, cybersecurity
- 3:22details, and coordination strategies with emergency
- 3:25personnel. And according to the Commission,
- 3:27Tesla's submission lacks specific clarity and depth on
- 3:31handling road incidents, customer safety assurances, and
- 3:35operational transparency. The CPUC identified concerns
- 3:40primarily related to Tesla's Full Self Driving Beta software
- 3:43Critical to the Ribotaxi operations.
- 3:47Now, FSD Beta currently operates in thousands of private Tesla
- 3:51vehicles throughout California, but faces ongoing federal and
- 3:55state investigations regarding its overall safety and
- 3:58performance reliability. Now, the CPUC noted Tesla's
- 4:02limited data sharing and insufficient evidence supporting
- 4:06safety claims in real world urban traffic environments.
- 4:12So Tesla's approach is kind of overconfident at this point.
- 4:20There's thorough regulatory compliance requirements, and
- 4:23they require transparent cooperation with oversight
- 4:26bodies. Tesla's applications
- 4:28historically downplay or even omit specific information,
- 4:33creating friction with regulatory entities that require
- 4:35comprehensive proof of safety and reliability.
- 4:39Now, this current delay follows previous friction between Tesla
- 4:42and California regulators. Last year, California's
- 4:45Department of Motor Vehicles criticized Tesla's promotional
- 4:48language around Full Self Driving, describing it as a
- 4:53potentially misleading for consumers about the actual
- 4:56capabilities of the tech. The DMV is criticisms under
- 5:00score an ongoing disconnect between Tesla's aggressive
- 5:03promotional claims and the cautious scrutiny of regulatory
- 5:07bodies. Tesla CEO Elon Musk continues
- 5:10promoting a pretty huge vision here, promising full scale
- 5:15robotaxi deployment in multiple cities by late 2025.
- 5:20Now Elon has always been on Elon time.
- 5:26He says multiple cities by 2025, he wants to have 10s of
- 5:29thousands of robotaxis on the road by the end of or by 2026.
- 5:35We only have a few months left before 2026, you know.
- 5:39He frequently claims Tesla's autonomous software will achieve
- 5:42safer driving performance compared to humans.
- 5:46Tesla still faces significant obstacles demonstrating
- 5:49consistent safety across diverse driving scenarios, particularly
- 5:53in crowded urban settings. Now, Tesla remains under
- 5:59heightened scrutiny from federal regulators as well, including
- 6:02the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the
- 6:04NHTSA. They launched multiple probes
- 6:07into Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self Driving Beta systems after
- 6:11accidents involving stationary emergency vehicles.
- 6:14The regulatory body demands increased transparency in proof
- 6:18of the effectiveness of Tesla's self driving systems.
- 6:21California currently serves as the primary proving ground for
- 6:24robo taxi deployments, with competitors Cruise and Waymo
- 6:28already operating limited autonomous taxi services in
- 6:31urban environments like San Francisco.
- 6:33Cruise, owned by General Motors, and Waymo Alphabet, received
- 6:37CPUC authorization after extensive regulatory reviews,
- 6:41detailed testing documentation, and operational transparency.
- 6:46Now, Tesla's comparatively less collaborative approach raises
- 6:50obstacles to obtaining the required approvals.
- 6:53Now, achieving successful regulatory approval for robo
- 6:56taxi operations in California hinges heavily on detailed,
- 6:59verifiable, and transparent safety data.
- 7:03Cruise and Waymo both invested significant resources into
- 7:06addressing regulator concerns, proactively developing dedicated
- 7:10safety teams publicity, publicly releasing extensive safety
- 7:15reports, and consistently engaging in transparent
- 7:17dialogues with those same regulators.
- 7:20Tesla's recent submission lack this depth, resulting in the
- 7:23Cpuc's rejection. Tesla basically does what Tesla
- 7:27wants to do until somebody tells them that they're not supposed
- 7:29to do it and then they go back instead of doing it right the
- 7:33first time. Course they should have done.
- 7:35I mean, it's Tesla. They're an engineering company
- 7:38that should be able to cross the TS and dot.
- 7:40The IS right now. The success to successfully
- 7:43advance into robotaxi and California test, the must
- 7:47prioritize resolving regulatory issues, developing detailed
- 7:52safety demonstrations, and sharing comprehensive
- 7:54operational data. Regulators like the CPUC and
- 7:57HTSA increasingly prioritize transparency and demonstrable
- 8:02reliability, forcing Tesla to align its ambitious technology
- 8:06goals with practical regulatory standards.
- 8:09And without clear improvements, Tesla risks continued delays and
- 8:15scrutiny from regulators in California and also other
- 8:19states. I mean, if Tesla does this to
- 8:21California, and we all know California is one of those
- 8:23states where the regulatory system is in depth, let's just
- 8:28say they put it as easy as possible, very in depth.
- 8:35There's a lot of regulations in California.
- 8:38If you can pass California regulations, you're pretty much
- 8:41good anywhere else in the country.
- 8:42Maybe New York is similar, but yeah, California is the way.
- 8:48If you want to, if you want to get a world or a countrywide,
- 8:51you want to pass California first.
- 8:54So if Tesla could come back with some data for California,
- 8:59they'll be able to roll out the cyber taxi in the Golden State.
- 9:06Hey, thank you so much for listening today.
