- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Conspiracy The Show with your hosts Adam Todd
- 0:16Speaker 1: Brown and Connor mcspatn. Hey, everybody, welcome to Conspiracy The Show.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm Adam Todd Brown, I'm your host. Connor mcspadden, once
- 0:38Speaker 1: again has been tossed into the back of a black van.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We were at the corner crossing the street coming to
- 0:44Speaker 1: the Conspiracy the Show building where we record, and a
- 0:48Speaker 1: van pulled up and it said one of you in,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and I said, Connor, American City Control. Yes, it was
- 0:55Speaker 1: an American City Pest Control van. My favorite FBI front
- 0:59Speaker 1: operation of all time.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I saw them out front of my house the other day.
- 1:03Speaker 1: It was the thirteenth time too. Yeah. Yeah, they keep
- 1:07Speaker 1: showing up. But I have guests today so it's fine.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But I will do this motherfucker by myself if I
- 1:13Speaker 1: have to. No, I wouldn't. That would be weird. I
- 1:15Speaker 1: did a solo podcast this week. It was fun, but
- 1:17Speaker 1: it wasn't like this would I would just be telling
- 1:19Speaker 1: people a story.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It's tough when you're done with your punchline. Yeah, you
- 1:23Speaker 2: do a punchline, then you gotta keep it, Yeah, to
- 1:25Speaker 2: keep going.
- 1:25Speaker 3: That's what I would just say.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Eh, I did. I literally did that. At one point,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I made a joke and went a good reference, right,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and I hope people at home responded, Hey, that's Laura Crawford.
- 1:39Speaker 4: The same I have the same reaction to a bad
- 1:41Speaker 4: joke and threats of my own death.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Oh no, oh that's right. Yeah. I threatened to kill
- 1:46Speaker 1: Laura if she stole my lighter before we before we
- 1:49Speaker 1: started recording. And that's Adam Ganzer. Howdy. How's it going? Man?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Going great? Thanks for doing the podcast, your third conspiracy podcast, right? Uh?
- 1:58Speaker 1: I did the Jordan ones. Yeah, yeah, because we did
- 2:02Speaker 1: two episodes of the Jordan thing and then this and
- 2:06Speaker 1: this is Laura's I think third conspiracy episode.
- 2:10Speaker 3: We didn't we did.
- 2:11Speaker 1: We did mirage men, We did one with Connor.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Oh we'd yeah about the media and the CIA.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Right, that's a fun episode.
- 2:19Speaker 3: That is a fun episode. This episode and.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Now the episode oh that's right. Yeah, that was a
- 2:25Speaker 1: creepy episode. And this is kind of a holdover from
- 2:29Speaker 1: when we did Sports Month on Conspiracy the show. That's
- 2:33Speaker 1: when me and the gans talked about the Michael Jordan conspiracies,
- 2:37Speaker 1: which is a fascinating thing to look into. But I
- 2:40Speaker 1: never got to this episode, which is the real reason
- 2:43Speaker 1: why Donald Trump hates the NFL. And this is one
- 2:48Speaker 1: we do episodes like this sometimes where it's not really
- 2:51Speaker 1: even a conspiracy, like we just all sort of know.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But it's just not like you said before we recorded this,
- 2:57Speaker 1: it's just not as common of knowledge as you would.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Ex and not publicly admitted yet. Right one day it'll
- 3:03Speaker 2: be publicly admitted and then it won't be a conspiracy.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But right now, it's just all the facts point to this.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Well, you could also say the conspiracy could be is
- 3:11Speaker 4: there a conspiracy by the NFL higher ups to keep
- 3:15Speaker 4: Donald Trump out of the NFL? Did they conspire to
- 3:19Speaker 4: keep him out? And it's right, they probably did work
- 3:22Speaker 4: in secrets in some ways to keep him out. And
- 3:25Speaker 4: did Donald Trump work with people within his administration to
- 3:29Speaker 4: defame the NFL? Will they conspire to take down the NFL?
- 3:33Speaker 4: He worked with other people who that was their conscious agenda.
- 3:36Speaker 1: We'll get to it. But the part about the.
- 3:37Speaker 4: NFL twiracies, you might not think it seems like any
- 3:40Speaker 4: but there's two.
- 3:41Speaker 1: But the part about the NFL conspiring against him, I
- 3:44Speaker 1: think you can shut down right away because it's less
- 3:46Speaker 1: that they conspired against him. It's just that they did
- 3:49Speaker 1: their due diligence, Yeah, and did a good job screening
- 3:53Speaker 1: a person who wanted to enter their organization. The country
- 3:56Speaker 1: could take some lessons, sure from that?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Well, I would argue, apparently they had access to his
- 4:01Speaker 2: text retur.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Exactly, not a bit.
- 4:03Speaker 2: They legitimately knew his finances better than we, right, Yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 2: so that's upsetting.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so we're gonna talk about, uh, what it all
- 4:12Speaker 1: really goes back to. I think the genesis of it
- 4:15Speaker 1: all is the USFL, which is anyone old enough to
- 4:18Speaker 1: remember the USFL, No fucking way. I had a set
- 4:21Speaker 1: of USFL trading cards that I kept for about seven
- 4:26Speaker 1: years and then sold for a nice chunk of money.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Really because the USFL. They they were this upstart football
- 4:34Speaker 1: league that wanted to be an alternative to the NFL.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And for the first couple of seasons they played in
- 4:41Speaker 1: the spring, which is cool because you could basically have
- 4:44Speaker 1: football all year round, and they were getting big name
- 4:49Speaker 1: talent from that you would expect to go to the NFL.
- 4:52Speaker 1: They were drafting big name talent right like herschel Walker
- 4:54Speaker 1: started in the USFL. Steve Young. I couldn't believe that, ye.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Ye, there's a very good thirty for thirty about the
- 5:01Speaker 4: USSL that I did see, and it seemed like they
- 5:03Speaker 4: marketed really the right way. They did an excellent job
- 5:07Speaker 4: early on marketing in it, marketing it, and their approach
- 5:12Speaker 4: was not was not to put down the NFL at all.
- 5:14Speaker 4: I don't remember them as opposed to when the XFL
- 5:17Speaker 4: came out. They were kind of like, you have a
- 5:19Speaker 4: problem with X, Y and Z about the NFL. This
- 5:22Speaker 4: is the alternative to that, whereas the USFL was more like,
- 5:25Speaker 4: wo gonna be nice if they were football in the spring.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Would be cool to watch football all yearn oh year cool.
- 5:30Speaker 2: It's not better football or a rebuttal to football. It's
- 5:33Speaker 2: just more of it, right, more.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Of the football that you like. And this is at
- 5:37Speaker 3: the standard that you expect.
- 5:38Speaker 2: It's crazy to me that as as late as the
- 5:41Speaker 2: eighties they're still doing these leagues. I mean, like, I know,
- 5:43Speaker 2: we're still doing it now, but like not in a
- 5:45Speaker 2: serious way, like this is a serious endeavor.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah, they really fucking went.
- 5:49Speaker 2: It's because in the seventies all these alternate leagues fucking worked.
- 5:52Speaker 1: They all worked.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly, So like in the eighties, we keep
- 5:56Speaker 2: doing it and it worked for basketball, right.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's kind of where the problem begins is
- 6:02Speaker 1: Trump joins the league. He initially refused to join the league,
- 6:05Speaker 1: but within like a year he ends up entering this
- 6:09Speaker 1: franchise called the New Jersey Generals. So the the USFL,
- 6:13Speaker 1: what happens is, well, we should talk about one article
- 6:17Speaker 1: I read that was really interesting. It's called the NFL
- 6:19Speaker 1: Stiff Arm Trump. Now he's hackling from the White House,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and this article just kind of goes into detail about
- 6:25Speaker 1: how a lot of NFL owners to this day still
- 6:27Speaker 1: love Trump, but they're also just kind of talking about
- 6:30Speaker 1: Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah, they a lot of NFL owners publicly say they
- 6:35Speaker 2: love Trump.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Right, let's call it what it is. Yeah.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Also, a fair bit of time in this article is
- 6:40Speaker 2: spent to Jerry Jones' drinking habit, which, yeah, they.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Drank a plastic cup full of liquor twice. Yeah, when
- 6:47Speaker 1: the guy he asked fucked, He asked the writer if
- 6:49Speaker 1: he wanted a shot, and he came back with a
- 6:51Speaker 1: souvenir cup full of I.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Got like nauseated just reading that hurt.
- 6:58Speaker 1: That's like the least thinking about it drink to me. No, yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I would. I would thump of scotch. Yeah, I would
- 7:05Speaker 1: request ice and a glass and a soda. Yeah, I
- 7:09Speaker 1: don't care how good the scotch is.
- 7:10Speaker 3: They have a ginger ale, please.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I love a neat Scotch, but not in the quantity
- 7:16Speaker 2: of beer. Cup full of it twice.
- 7:20Speaker 1: That's well.
- 7:21Speaker 4: The thing that this, it's just the game with this
- 7:23Speaker 4: right now, is why they would be pro Trump. And
- 7:25Speaker 4: in a sense because the main point of people who
- 7:28Speaker 4: are owners of teams is to build new stadiums.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Yeah, usually, and that involves a lot of government.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Interaction and yeah, you know, and also.
- 7:35Speaker 4: See politicians if they probably figure, oh, we ride this
- 7:38Speaker 4: Trump wave, we get a bunch of new guys into office,
- 7:41Speaker 4: and then I can strong arm them into paying for
- 7:43Speaker 4: my fucking stadium.
- 7:44Speaker 3: It's great.
- 7:44Speaker 1: And also they're the number one and two most valuable
- 7:47Speaker 1: teams in the NFL. So if anyone has something to
- 7:51Speaker 1: gain from tax loopholes and all the things that come
- 7:54Speaker 1: with being friends of the president, it's the fucking Patriots
- 7:57Speaker 1: and the Cowboys. Ye, that's true. Do you know which
- 7:59Speaker 1: one most valuable? Huh?
- 8:01Speaker 3: Cowboys?
- 8:01Speaker 1: Very good? Yeah, Hey, they ask an interesting question at
- 8:04Speaker 1: the end of this, would Trump be president if he'd
- 8:06Speaker 1: succeeded in becoming an NFL owner. I do like, I
- 8:10Speaker 1: don't know. That's it's the wheels are spinning in my
- 8:13Speaker 1: head now. I like the idea that his entire campaign
- 8:17Speaker 1: was him going, I'm gonna fucking get big enough to
- 8:20Speaker 1: pull down the NFL. You will let me in. I
- 8:23Speaker 1: feel like if there's one theory of Trump.
- 8:25Speaker 2: That we all have to sort of say this has
- 8:27Speaker 2: to be true, it's that nothing will ever make him happy,
- 8:30Speaker 2: Like every resource and dollar you pour into him is
- 8:33Speaker 2: into a black darkness where he will not return.
- 8:37Speaker 1: So I don't know. I don't think so.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I don't think an NFL team, like giving him the
- 8:40Speaker 2: Bills doesn't mean suddenly.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Yeah, he's still got the Bills. It's the Bills. I
- 8:46Speaker 1: feel like that actually wouldn't be bad for football if
- 8:49Speaker 1: he owned the Bills. Can I say that? I mean yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I mean the Bills need some personality and checked it
- 8:54Speaker 1: into their shit. They do all have. The fans are
- 8:57Speaker 1: like all eaten ass in the parking lot. What the
- 9:00Speaker 1: fans are doing? They have a wild fan base, yes
- 9:03Speaker 1: they do.
- 9:03Speaker 3: What's going on with that is this based on an
- 9:05Speaker 3: article or here's saying.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Rie it's based.
- 9:07Speaker 2: The entire site dead Spin is basically dedicated to things
- 9:10Speaker 2: Bill's fans are doing before and after games.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you need to go check that out.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Well again, honestly, with the way the America is going
- 9:18Speaker 4: with the healthcare crisis, I think instead of drinking beer
- 9:21Speaker 4: and eating brought worst before a game, people should be
- 9:23Speaker 4: eating ass and smoking pot, be dropping some ecstasy or whatever.
- 9:27Speaker 4: But to this question, I think Donald Trump would not
- 9:31Speaker 4: be priced if he succeeded in becoming an NFL owner,
- 9:33Speaker 4: because well, it depends when, right, right, If he had
- 9:37Speaker 4: gotten in twenty fourteen, I think no, he would.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Not have lunched. I think he would have No, there
- 9:42Speaker 1: had been.
- 9:43Speaker 4: No time before twenty sixteen if he had become an
- 9:45Speaker 4: owner in the Colts, right he wanted to.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Be Yeah, he tried, apparently tried to buy the Colts Baltimore,
- 9:51Speaker 1: the Baltimore the early Yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, the Baltimore Cults.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Probably right around the time he decided to join the USFL.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Had he been successful in getting the Colts, I think
- 10:00Speaker 4: he would have still tried to be present.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I could see that.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Yeah, oh yes, And no answer that question.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Yeah, he had. He tried three times. Well, he tried
- 10:09Speaker 1: twice to join the NFL, and the one time he
- 10:12Speaker 1: was like, just offered it and said no. He could
- 10:15Speaker 1: have bought the Patriots in nineteen eighty eight, Yeah, and
- 10:18Speaker 1: didn't want to bring on their debts, so he was
- 10:20Speaker 1: like no because he.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Hates debts, because he hates debts so much.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, and now the second most profitable team in
- 10:27Speaker 1: the NFL. So there's that business acumen he's known for.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Another article we talked about Sean Gregory writing for Time,
- 10:33Speaker 1: the NFL fought Donald Trump's bullying thirty years ago and
- 10:36Speaker 1: one should do it again. And there's also a really
- 10:39Speaker 1: good documentary that Laura mentioned called uh, small Potatoes.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Yeah, small potatoes, And it's it's interesting because recently I
- 10:46Speaker 4: was like, you know what, I like small potatoes and
- 10:48Speaker 4: I am sick of their association with minus skill problems.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, a small potato, A tiny, little roasted potatoes.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Part Yeah, you just little olive oil, a little salt
- 10:56Speaker 4: and pepper, roll them around, throw them in the oven
- 10:58Speaker 4: on a sheet of aluminum for absolutely brilliantside dish.
- 11:01Speaker 1: That's a treat. Put him in a skillet for a
- 11:03Speaker 1: little bit after Brown.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe you got an Aoli to dunk that shit in.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Hey, hey, Maron, But instead we associated with Trump fucking
- 11:17Speaker 1: up the USFL. That's a cosmic injustice right there.
- 11:20Speaker 3: That small potatoes.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That's what that documentary is about, and that's what this
- 11:24Speaker 1: article is about. And it's what the book Football for
- 11:28Speaker 1: a Buck, which covers the brief life of the USFL,
- 11:31Speaker 1: is about. And in this article they're interviewing Jeff Pearlman,
- 11:34Speaker 1: who wrote that book.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I like that guy, Yeah, that guy, I let it fly. Yeah,
- 11:39Speaker 2: I was a fan. He was just basically like, yeah,
- 11:42Speaker 2: Trump is a is a dirt bag huckster. Ert he
- 11:45Speaker 2: thinks he's a dirt bag huckster. That's not me making
- 11:48Speaker 2: up a funny phrase. That's what he said. Yeah, love it.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And sure, what his coverage of the USFL makes clear
- 11:55Speaker 1: is everyone in the USFL pretty much fucking hated Trump.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Right too, hated to be in meetings with him, right
- 12:01Speaker 4: where they describe him as never shutting up.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Right, They're like, you could not get him to shut up.
- 12:08Speaker 4: And when he did shut up and finally someone else
- 12:10Speaker 4: was talking, it was very apparent he was not listening
- 12:13Speaker 4: to a word they were saying.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Right, does that sound familiar to anyone? M exactly the
- 12:19Speaker 1: claims in the book that just came out about Trump,
- 12:21Speaker 1: like what it's like working in the Trump White House.
- 12:24Speaker 1: It sounds a lot like working in the Trump USFL House.
- 12:27Speaker 1: What I love about this article or if you want
- 12:29Speaker 1: to go out and read the book, they both open
- 12:31Speaker 1: with this letter from the owner of the USFL's Tampa
- 12:36Speaker 1: Bay franchise, where he literally at one point says, you're
- 12:40Speaker 1: a lot younger than me.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Which taller.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you're younger, younger, so I will have no problem
- 12:46Speaker 1: punching you in the mouth. Oh, I love that. It's
- 12:50Speaker 1: so great. Like he's addressing how Trump kind of requires
- 12:54Speaker 1: that everyone sort of saying his praises when he's around
- 12:56Speaker 1: and give him credit for being the best. And he's like, now,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I'll fucking fuck you up if you keep talking that way. God,
- 13:03Speaker 1: a billionaire fight. I would pay for that. Oh yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 1: there's no way. These two were billionaires at the time.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Well, he was saying that, He's like, if you continue
- 13:10Speaker 4: to talk about other owners in the press.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I think was specifically his issue was that.
- 13:15Speaker 4: You are bad mouthing other owners in the press and
- 13:18Speaker 4: making us all look foolish by your and he's like,
- 13:21Speaker 4: if I hear that you're talking about these people again,
- 13:23Speaker 4: I will punch you in the mountain.
- 13:24Speaker 1: One of the interesting things that came up in there's
- 13:27Speaker 1: also an article on Newsweek where the hell did I
- 13:30Speaker 1: put it?
- 13:31Speaker 2: Uh?
- 13:32Speaker 1: Trump's NFL fight dates back to his failed USFL experiment
- 13:35Speaker 1: in the eighties by Tim Marson. It's kind of the
- 13:37Speaker 1: same article, but it's a more straightforward interview with the
- 13:40Speaker 1: guy who wrote this book, and he talks in that
- 13:43Speaker 1: article about this situation where Trump drafts Doug Flutey to
- 13:49Speaker 1: play for the New Jersey General, which admittedly was a
- 13:53Speaker 1: fucking coup at the time. I'm sure I'm old enough
- 13:56Speaker 1: to remember that and be like, holy shit, Doug Flutey.
- 13:59Speaker 1: And then a few years later the Bears had Doug
- 14:00Speaker 1: flute and I was like, oh, fucking Doug. Oh, he's
- 14:02Speaker 1: right in the past, but.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Five four Doug flute Yeah.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But he signed Doug Flutey and then immediately reached out
- 14:11Speaker 1: to all the other owners and was like, Hey, how
- 14:13Speaker 1: cool is it that I signed Doug Flutey. I think
- 14:16Speaker 1: all of you should pay his contracts because it's going
- 14:19Speaker 1: to be so good for the league that I signed Doug.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And it's like exactly what he's doing with the fucking
- 14:24Speaker 1: border wall now, where he's like, hey, I'm gonna build
- 14:27Speaker 1: this wall, but Mexico pay for.
- 14:29Speaker 4: It, or he wants he wants the not the UN members,
- 14:32Speaker 4: the NAFTA members, NATO, NATO sorry, NATO members to pay
- 14:36Speaker 4: their share, but.
- 14:36Speaker 1: He doesn't want to pay taxes, at least in this
- 14:39Speaker 1: At least in this version, there's some logic to why
- 14:42Speaker 1: he would want them to pay, because it's like, hey,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I just bost I just bolstered the revenues of this league.
- 14:47Speaker 4: League works for any sports league.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Wait, but wasn't it implied that they kind of did
- 14:54Speaker 2: acquiesce to this.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Wasn't it implied? No, not that not the paying Doug Flutie.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I think that's probably what cause the Tampa Bay owner
- 15:01Speaker 1: to fire that letter off. If anything, There's one more
- 15:04Speaker 1: really fun tidbit from this time article where apparently at
- 15:09Speaker 1: one point Trump like, I feel like him entering the
- 15:12Speaker 1: USFL was because he got rejected by the NFL when
- 15:15Speaker 1: he tried to buy the Colts. Sure, And at one
- 15:17Speaker 1: point he goes on record and says that Pete Roselle
- 15:21Speaker 1: expressed that he wished Trump had bought the Colts, and
- 15:24Speaker 1: then like fucking in court, Pete rosell testifies as to
- 15:28Speaker 1: him saying, mister Trump, as long as I or my
- 15:31Speaker 1: heirs are involved in the NFL, you will never be
- 15:34Speaker 1: a franchise owner in the league.
- 15:35Speaker 2: It's pretty that's pretty pretty definitive rejection. Yeah, on public record.
- 15:39Speaker 4: That just reminds me of how like a stalker will be. Like, yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 4: she she's in love with me. She's been sending messages
- 15:46Speaker 4: to me that Olivia Naton John is in my brain
- 15:48Speaker 4: and she wants to get married right, And she's like,
- 15:50Speaker 4: I am frightened of you. I've told you to leave
- 15:52Speaker 4: my property multiple times, my security guards, I've arrested you.
- 15:56Speaker 3: And he's like, yeah, she's playing hard it guys, because
- 15:58Speaker 3: she's alone with me.
- 15:59Speaker 4: That's not It almost feels like a psychotic stalking relationship.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So then he joins the USFL as the owner of
- 16:06Speaker 1: the New Jersey Generals and immediately, like he claims it's
- 16:09Speaker 1: not his intent, but like immediately starts pushing for a
- 16:12Speaker 1: merger with the NFL.
- 16:14Speaker 4: It's basically he's shooting President Reagan to get Chody Foster's He's.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Like, watch me kill this whole league just.
- 16:22Speaker 1: To get you to love me. Yeah, that is exactly
- 16:25Speaker 1: what he's doing. And he like really goes out of
- 16:28Speaker 1: his way to set this up as a confrontation with
- 16:30Speaker 1: the NFL to the point where he asks he gets
- 16:34Speaker 1: the entire league to agree to start playing in the fall,
- 16:38Speaker 1: like at the same time as the NFL, Which why.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I feel like, you know, man, I feel like Donald
- 16:44Speaker 2: Trump is proof that there's a certain level of shamelessness
- 16:47Speaker 2: or like bald faced like hypocrisy that people don't know
- 16:51Speaker 2: what to do about. Yeah, like these rich, powerful men
- 16:54Speaker 2: who decided as a lark to start a football league,
- 16:57Speaker 2: let him do this.
- 16:58Speaker 1: They're just like they're like all right, in the USFL
- 17:01Speaker 1: operates or did it operated initially in such a sweet
- 17:05Speaker 1: spot for sports, because like baseball's just starting, so you
- 17:09Speaker 1: don't give a shit about that yet the NFL's over.
- 17:12Speaker 1: There's like besides March madness, there's really unless you like
- 17:16Speaker 1: fucking watch hockey like a weirdo. I don't know when
- 17:18Speaker 1: that nightmare of a sport starts. It's concurrent with the NBA. Okay, good,
- 17:23Speaker 1: but it like there's not that much going on. They
- 17:26Speaker 1: had it made. There's a really good quote in this
- 17:29Speaker 1: article from Houston Gambler's owner Jerry Argovitz. Donald didn't love
- 17:33Speaker 1: the USFL. We had a great league and a great idea,
- 17:36Speaker 1: but then everyone let Donald Trump take over. It was
- 17:39Speaker 1: our death. You hear that, America, It was our death.
- 17:43Speaker 1: That awkward silence is going to get edited out. Oh
- 17:46Speaker 1: the software I used, but yeah, everyone should just know
- 17:49Speaker 1: it existed. And yeah, what he's referring to is not
- 17:53Speaker 1: just Trump's idea to move to the fall, But then
- 17:56Speaker 1: they filed this insane antitrust lawsuit against then because they're
- 18:01Speaker 1: arguing that the NFL doesn't provide room for competition. And
- 18:07Speaker 1: the I think everyone in the world's argument was you
- 18:10Speaker 1: could just play in the spring like you have been
- 18:12Speaker 1: and that would take care of it, right, And Trump's like, nope,
- 18:17Speaker 1: it's playing them fall.
- 18:18Speaker 4: And there's no real case that they could say that
- 18:20Speaker 4: the NFL prevented them from appearing on any networks or
- 18:23Speaker 4: advertising in any way. We're making people aware of their product.
- 18:28Speaker 4: So in terms of a monopoly, if you're going to
- 18:30Speaker 4: monopolize that, you have to say that they control the
- 18:33Speaker 4: means of production and they control the means of marketing,
- 18:36Speaker 4: and they control, you know, basically all of that, and
- 18:39Speaker 4: they don't.
- 18:40Speaker 1: No, no, they don't at all.
- 18:41Speaker 3: They don't.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And they took this like, your scouts can go see players. Yeah,
- 18:46Speaker 4: they're not preventing you from doing that. So you can
- 18:48Speaker 4: get players, you can get teams and coaches.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Yeah. And what's funny is they won the lawsuit, but
- 18:53Speaker 1: they were awarded a dollar in damages, so it was
- 18:56Speaker 1: almost worse than losing.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Definitely worse. Yeah, that's a humiliating number of dollars to win.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, his thought was, well, we're gonna
- 19:06Speaker 1: go up against them and then we'll just draw from
- 19:08Speaker 1: their audience so they'll be like, oh shit, we need
- 19:10Speaker 1: to merge. And that did not happen. Motherfucker's quit fucking
- 19:14Speaker 1: with the USFL when it moved to the fall. And
- 19:17Speaker 1: it's like, you did it to yourself in this case.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I thought this was interesting. The NFL's strategy was to
- 19:23Speaker 1: just make Trump look kind of like an arrogant douchebag
- 19:26Speaker 1: because what he wanted what the USFL's case was trying.
- 19:30Speaker 1: What they were trying to say was that hey, the
- 19:33Speaker 1: NFL is bullying us and they're not letting us participate in.
- 19:39Speaker 1: The NFL's defense of that was, no, this is just
- 19:42Speaker 1: a douchebag leading a bunch of naive business owners down
- 19:46Speaker 1: the wrong path.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Right if there aren't ratings attached or a television camera
- 19:50Speaker 2: attached to judging what Trump is doing, Yeah, that's always
- 19:55Speaker 2: how he's going to get right, Like his behavior is
- 19:58Speaker 2: that so Like they were just like, if we just
- 20:00Speaker 2: treat him like what he is, and nobody but the
- 20:03Speaker 2: judicial officers have to judge it, right, guess what he loses,
- 20:06Speaker 2: you know, like.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and they it came up a lot that he
- 20:10Speaker 1: was just trying to force a merger with the two leagues,
- 20:14Speaker 1: and he was like, no, I'm not in emails. Yeah,
- 20:17Speaker 1: the documents, they produced so many documents where he talks
- 20:20Speaker 1: about a merger strategy. So he's literally caught lying in court.
- 20:25Speaker 1: This is a quote from Patricia Patricia Sabili or Sabilia,
- 20:29Speaker 1: a juror in the eighty six trial. He did not
- 20:32Speaker 1: do the USFL. Well, what's funny in hindsight is that
- 20:36Speaker 1: his so called business genius ruined it for them. He
- 20:39Speaker 1: was not believable in anything he said. He came off
- 20:43Speaker 1: as arrogant, and unlikable sounds about right. Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Yeah, and they're lucky that they got it put before
- 20:48Speaker 4: a jury in this case, because you know, juries are
- 20:51Speaker 4: all about weaving a narrative, and the narrative of the
- 20:55Speaker 4: NFL has a monopoly on this. That's that's a vague,
- 20:59Speaker 4: kind of far reaching narrative, doesn't really have key players.
- 21:02Speaker 4: You would have to identify this villainous character that's constructing this,
- 21:07Speaker 4: the side players and everything. And they didn't really get
- 21:09Speaker 4: that done with the NFL, whereas on the other side
- 21:12Speaker 4: of it, constructing the narrative of this is a buffoonish, cowardly,
- 21:16Speaker 4: untrustworthy businessman who's leading these menistry.
- 21:19Speaker 3: That's a much more believable narrative. Yeah, and easy to follow.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Yeah, they really had it going well for He made
- 21:24Speaker 4: it quite easy for them.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and yet they won the suit. Yeah, that's what's
- 21:28Speaker 1: so strange.
- 21:29Speaker 2: The one dollar seems very fitting, right, the winning the suit.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I can't get my mind around.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Well, I think the I think it's the argument that
- 21:36Speaker 1: you did, like you could just have kept playing in
- 21:39Speaker 1: the spring. But I'm sorry, and forgive me if I
- 21:42Speaker 1: don't understand. Why would you award them a win that
- 21:46Speaker 1: I don't recall from the documentary they didn't talk about it.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that so like something about their case was accurate
- 21:53Speaker 2: but not enough to give them damages.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Probably that the NFL exerted so much influence over TV
- 22:00Speaker 1: and advertisers at that time. If I just had to guess,
- 22:04Speaker 1: I'd say there was probably some exclusivity contracts that the
- 22:08Speaker 1: NFL signed where they were like, if you work with us,
- 22:10Speaker 1: you can't work with anyone else, which is a thing
- 22:14Speaker 1: that I think happens a lot, but in this case,
- 22:17Speaker 1: I could see the USFL being like, well, that means
- 22:19Speaker 1: that we can't advertise and shit during the fall. And
- 22:23Speaker 1: I think the jury was probably like, yeah, you're right,
- 22:25Speaker 1: but also, what about you just playing in the spring
- 22:27Speaker 1: like you were in the first place. And I think
- 22:30Speaker 1: probably the merger thing where Trump's like, no, I'm not
- 22:33Speaker 1: trying to push a merger and then it comes out
- 22:35Speaker 1: in court that you're just trying to make a merger happen.
- 22:38Speaker 1: That's not going to make the jury feel for you.
- 22:43Speaker 1: It probably made everyone feel like Trump was just thinking
- 22:46Speaker 1: he was smarter than everyone in the room and was
- 22:49Speaker 1: going to make a merger inevitable by moving to the fall.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Well, It's just interesting because like you when you use
- 22:54Speaker 2: on the surface, you hear this story, you think, like,
- 22:56Speaker 2: so these owners are like not that smart, I mean,
- 22:58Speaker 2: because like we really easily poke holes and why they
- 23:01Speaker 2: did this lawsuit and yet they did win the lawsuit, right, So,
- 23:05Speaker 2: like you want, like the thing that I want to
- 23:07Speaker 2: say about it that fits into our narrative is that, like,
- 23:09Speaker 2: like the Trump factor is not just that they went
- 23:12Speaker 2: all this way doing a thing they didn't really want
- 23:14Speaker 2: to do, because all they wanted to do was have a.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Fucking football league that was successful.
- 23:18Speaker 2: It's that like he used their own principles against them
- 23:21Speaker 2: to get to a point where he destroyed the very
- 23:23Speaker 2: thing they were trying to do and then further destroyed
- 23:26Speaker 2: their ability to like get restitution for it, right you
- 23:29Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like they even had a case
- 23:31Speaker 2: and he still fucked that up too.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 23:34Speaker 4: The issue with him, and he did have an undue
- 23:36Speaker 4: influence on the league guys compared to other honors, because
- 23:38Speaker 4: they made the point that a New York league was
- 23:41Speaker 4: so essential to their operations as a whole league. So
- 23:44Speaker 4: he already had undue influence or a larger share of
- 23:47Speaker 4: influence than he necessarily warranted, and he's the kind of
- 23:51Speaker 4: person that can bring in weaker people within his orbit,
- 23:54Speaker 4: so he already has an outsized position of power. He
- 23:56Speaker 4: brings in a couple other teams to agree with him,
- 23:59Speaker 4: and then it just becomes what do you want to do?
- 24:00Speaker 4: Have internal fighting the whole time or let him do
- 24:03Speaker 4: what he wants? Yeah, do you want to have just
- 24:04Speaker 4: a stancil and so you get no business?
- 24:06Speaker 3: Or what have these teams refused to play?
- 24:08Speaker 1: What do you do? You know?
- 24:09Speaker 3: Yes, kind of have to capitulate to it at some point.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Again, it's mob bus shit. Yeah, And that probably came
- 24:15Speaker 1: up in the lawsuit also because I wonder how many owners.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I'm sure it was a system where a certain amount
- 24:23Speaker 1: of like like, I'm sure they voted, and there had
- 24:25Speaker 1: to be a certain percentage of owners that decided to
- 24:28Speaker 1: go short. So I'm sure there were holdouts too who
- 24:30Speaker 1: are just watching this case like, fuck, we're going to
- 24:33Speaker 1: be done. Yeah, this is going to be a catastrophe. Yeah,
- 24:37Speaker 1: and it was. And this is one last quote from
- 24:40Speaker 1: Jeff Perlman, the guy who wrote the book about the USFL.
- 24:44Speaker 1: He's talking about Trump. If I needed to tell you
- 24:46Speaker 1: that he bullied other owners. He was a bully, but
- 24:49Speaker 1: somehow people went along with it. They just did. They
- 24:53Speaker 1: thought he knew what he was talking about, or they
- 24:55Speaker 1: didn't want to argue, or they didn't want to get
- 24:57Speaker 1: in his way. He was in meetings USF meetings. He
- 25:00Speaker 1: was a nightmare to deal with. He would not shut up,
- 25:03Speaker 1: but when other people spoke, he never listened to them.
- 25:06Speaker 1: He was just like he was the worst. You you're
- 25:09Speaker 1: the exhaustion of the Yeah, he fucking runs out of
- 25:12Speaker 1: steam talking about how terrible Trump is. I think it's
- 25:16Speaker 1: Connor who has told this story a couple times on
- 25:19Speaker 1: this podcast. And I don't know what the source of
- 25:22Speaker 1: it is. But apparently when you're elected president, the you
- 25:26Speaker 1: have to watch a video about the horrors of nuclear
- 25:30Speaker 1: war and what it causes and like the destruction it causes.
- 25:34Speaker 1: And apparently, like Bush cried, like all these presidents like
- 25:39Speaker 1: had really heavy reactions, and Trump was apparently on his
- 25:42Speaker 1: phone through most of it. Like if that's I like,
- 25:46Speaker 1: I don't know what the source of that is, but
- 25:48Speaker 1: if that's true, we're so fucked. Like that's a bad
- 25:51Speaker 1: Like that's like killing animals as a kid.
- 25:55Speaker 4: That's just it's just not within his purview as something
- 25:57Speaker 4: that's real, right, Well, I mean just the images just
- 26:01Speaker 4: don't speak to him in the same way because he's
- 26:03Speaker 4: seen them before or he I think sometimes people resist
- 26:07Speaker 4: things that they feel are emotional traps.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 4: I think that's sometimes when people feel like they're being
- 26:12Speaker 4: trapped to give an expected emotional reaction, they go very
- 26:15Speaker 4: much the opposite way. I want to give no reaction
- 26:17Speaker 4: because it's a sense of control. It's like, don't put
- 26:20Speaker 4: me in this place where I have to experience an
- 26:23Speaker 4: emotion for you.
- 26:24Speaker 3: I'm not your pet, I'm not your child, you know.
- 26:27Speaker 4: So for him, I think he probably shuts down in
- 26:28Speaker 4: those moments and he's like, you will get nothing from me.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I don't. Yeah. So let's talk about his next attempt
- 26:33Speaker 1: to enter into the NFL. And I love this fucking
- 26:37Speaker 1: article title. They just saw him as this scumbag huckster
- 26:41Speaker 1: Trump Kaepernick and how the NFL reignited the culture wars
- 26:45Speaker 1: on Vanity Fair by Mark Leibovich. Is that the same guy?
- 26:49Speaker 1: Because the first from New York Times right there pointing
- 26:53Speaker 1: at a screen going ham on Trump in the NFL.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Good for you, Mark Leibovich. She's like, I.
- 26:59Speaker 3: Could get another r Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Yeah. So in twenty fourteen, Trump tried to buy the
- 27:05Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills, which, like we mentioned earlier, his third attempt
- 27:08Speaker 1: or third chance at owning an NFL franchise, which super ironic.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Want to buy the Bills. As much as he talks
- 27:14Speaker 1: about people choking.
- 27:16Speaker 3: It makes them think about money.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Yeah, Bills, Yeah, probably that. It's just I will until
- 27:22Speaker 1: they win one. It will never make me think of
- 27:24Speaker 1: anything but missed field goals and lost super Bowls four
- 27:27Speaker 1: in a row, four consecutive. Getting there four times is incredible.
- 27:33Speaker 1: They're one of the greatest teams of all time, No, absolutely,
- 27:37Speaker 1: and they just never won such a It was so hard.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I wish I had a friend who was a Bills
- 27:42Speaker 2: fan and like the hope died after two and like
- 27:45Speaker 2: it's worse that they kept going to the Super Bowl.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I think there's something to that. I think when your
- 27:49Speaker 1: your fan base as a collective starts feeling like, all right,
- 27:53Speaker 1: how's this gonna go wrong? Look, I know the secret
- 27:56Speaker 1: isn't real, but I think the secret's kind of real sometimes,
- 27:59Speaker 1: like they're they're in that thing.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Like so, like if you're a Cleveland Browns fan right now,
- 28:04Speaker 2: right and they start winning some games. You can enjoy that,
- 28:06Speaker 2: right if you're a Cleveland Browns fan and they keep
- 28:09Speaker 2: going like eleven and five and keep winning, but never
- 28:12Speaker 2: get the like get the cup or whatever. Right, Like,
- 28:15Speaker 2: that's fucked. That's the worst experience there is as a
- 28:17Speaker 2: fan because you can't. You have to keep getting your
- 28:19Speaker 2: hopes up. They demanded of you. Yeah, that's the bills
- 28:23Speaker 2: they demanded of you.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yeah, are you familiar at That's a great thirty for thirty.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Also about it's about the Buffalo Bills team that went
- 28:31Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl four straight years and lost all
- 28:33Speaker 1: four years and like every time they should have won
- 28:36Speaker 1: any of them.
- 28:37Speaker 3: But I don't particularly remember that one.
- 28:39Speaker 1: It's really I like the theory that in one of
- 28:41Speaker 1: the games there was a helicopter above the stadium, and
- 28:46Speaker 1: the theory is that because that helicopter was hovering, it
- 28:49Speaker 1: knocked the potentially game winning field goal off. Oh my god,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I love so much. So Trump wanted to buy those
- 28:56Speaker 1: fucking losers in twenty fourteen. Shout out to chet Wild
- 28:59Speaker 1: he's from yeah and it he was rejected once again.
- 29:04Speaker 1: And here's the thing we mentioned this earlier. Oh was
- 29:07Speaker 1: it a conspiracy? To keep him out of the league. Nope,
- 29:09Speaker 1: they just saw his finances, Like because when you're entering
- 29:12Speaker 1: into the NFL, it's not like that's apparently more responsibility
- 29:16Speaker 1: than becoming president. But it's a conspiracy in the sense
- 29:19Speaker 1: that all job interviews are conspiracies. Well, yeah, yeah, he
- 29:23Speaker 1: didn't get in because yeah, it takes agreement and cooperation
- 29:25Speaker 1: among people, but that doesn't always mean it's a criminal conspiracy.
- 29:29Speaker 1: They have to evaluate your merits, right, and they said
- 29:32Speaker 1: he didn't have.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Them or yeah, his stability I think, yeah, it probably
- 29:37Speaker 4: wasn't an issue necessarily of having enough assets at that time,
- 29:40Speaker 4: as much as being a stable source of assets, yeah,
- 29:43Speaker 4: or a stable presence in the media.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and by that time he had fi like yeah,
- 29:48Speaker 1: you're right, filed bankruptcy multiple times by then, Like he
- 29:51Speaker 1: couldn't This was happening at a time when he couldn't
- 29:53Speaker 1: get money in the United States. That's been covered so
- 29:57Speaker 1: many times, like by twenty fourteen his money coming from Russia,
- 30:01Speaker 1: So the NFL was probably like no, yeah, And.
- 30:04Speaker 4: As far as sources of funds come from owners of
- 30:07Speaker 4: large teams like this, it is typically industry, and you know,
- 30:12Speaker 4: it's like the Gillette, you know, owns the team. People
- 30:15Speaker 4: who were in oil, people who were in manufacturing. Those
- 30:18Speaker 4: are usually the business, not usually real estate. Yeah, you
- 30:20Speaker 4: don't really hear a lot of real estate tycoons. They
- 30:22Speaker 4: tend to be involved in things like art, the arts.
- 30:25Speaker 3: I mean the finance a movie or destroying the arts.
- 30:29Speaker 2: They used to be in, like the like the Jerry
- 30:31Speaker 2: Buss was a real estate tycoon and he owned the Lakers.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I mean that used to be a thing in the eighties,
- 30:36Speaker 2: but it's not a thing now because you can't make
- 30:38Speaker 2: enough money in it now.
- 30:39Speaker 1: So this apparently caused a rift between Trump and Robert
- 30:42Speaker 1: Craft because he thought Craft should have done more to
- 30:45Speaker 1: help him get into the NFL. And I was just
- 30:49Speaker 1: curious if maybe Craft thought Trump should have done more
- 30:52Speaker 1: to help him get his Super Bowl ring back from
- 30:54Speaker 1: Vladimir Putin because Trump that story. Yeah, let's watch it.
- 31:00Speaker 1: There's a quick news report about it.
- 31:02Speaker 3: And when a KGB agent steals your ring, what do
- 31:05Speaker 3: you yes?
- 31:06Speaker 1: Video, there's video.
- 31:07Speaker 5: You can see a Russian president, Vladimir Putin holding the
- 31:10Speaker 5: Super Bowl ring that belonged to Robert Kraft.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Robert Kraft reaches and just gets denied for a minute there,
- 31:17Speaker 1: it looked like there had been a weird mix up.
- 31:20Speaker 5: The Patriots owner said he gave the ring as a
- 31:22Speaker 5: token of his quote respect and admiration for Putin was
- 31:27Speaker 5: the CBS News Moscow buro cheek.
- 31:29Speaker 1: We heard some rumor that Putin took somebody's ring at
- 31:33Speaker 1: an event, but it somebody.
- 31:36Speaker 3: There was no big deal somebody at the time, but
- 31:39Speaker 3: she took up and he cunts.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I loved it.
- 31:44Speaker 3: It's that football garbage.
- 31:46Speaker 1: A bit idiot they throw like a sphere around. Yeah,
- 31:50Speaker 1: they initially they did make Robert Kraft say that he
- 31:53Speaker 1: gave it to him because we didn't want to like
- 31:56Speaker 1: upset Russia and Putin.
- 31:58Speaker 2: This is what Robert Kraft gets, Yeah, for respecting Putin.
- 32:03Speaker 3: Thugs guess what they jack your shit?
- 32:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, like, also, what the fuck does Putin
- 32:08Speaker 1: want that ring for? You know what I mean, like
- 32:09Speaker 1: just to pay that guy. It's apparently on display at Grate,
- 32:13Speaker 1: like in a library in the Kremlin right now.
- 32:16Speaker 2: It's like it's like something stolen from the Crusades. Yeah,
- 32:20Speaker 2: he just has a display there for all history. Yeah,
- 32:22Speaker 2: it's all Just make another one, Robert Kraft, you fucking baby,
- 32:26Speaker 2: Just make one.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Well, he probably can't put out all his Stalin memorabilia.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Just yeah, no kidding. Yeah, they they finally made up
- 32:34Speaker 1: when Trump was running for president. Yeah, and Robert Kraft
- 32:38Speaker 1: approached Milania I think, and was Donald No, he approached Avankak.
- 32:44Speaker 3: It's so funny to get those two mixed up.
- 32:46Speaker 1: After it was announced that the bills had been sold
- 32:48Speaker 1: to someone else, yep, Trump tweeted, Wow, NFL ratings are down,
- 32:53Speaker 1: big league. Glad I didn't get the bills. Come on,
- 32:57Speaker 1: so even in twenty fourteen, I mean, pretty much since
- 33:00Speaker 1: Twitter has existed, this has been Trump's m O. He
- 33:02Speaker 1: apparently also during the I forget like the people that
- 33:07Speaker 1: bought the bills are awful too. I'm sure they're like
- 33:09Speaker 1: big business time.
- 33:10Speaker 2: I wouldn't bet on the character equality of any NFL
- 33:13Speaker 2: owner person.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but apparently while they.
- 33:15Speaker 4: Were doing anyone who owns billions of dollars, Yeah, I
- 33:19Speaker 4: don't think I can speak to Yeah, the character of
- 33:21Speaker 4: anyone who is a billionaire.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Apparently, during their press conference announcing the purchase of the bills,
- 33:26Speaker 1: Trump just live tweeted through the whole thing and was
- 33:28Speaker 1: shit talking him. So that's that's on brand.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Right, I'm god, it just makes you so sad that,
- 33:34Speaker 2: like we've known it for so long.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Yeah, you know. And my favorite they talk about this,
- 33:41Speaker 1: I think counts as the final NFL snub for Trump.
- 33:47Speaker 1: This is also from that Vanity Fair article and this
- 33:50Speaker 1: writer is first of all, he talks about how much
- 33:53Speaker 1: Trump loves Tom Brady. And there's a quote from a
- 33:56Speaker 1: Sports Illustrated article. If one thing stands out about Tom
- 34:00Speaker 1: I'm Brady, it's that he loves those women and guess what,
- 34:03Speaker 1: they love him too. And this is he also speaking
- 34:06Speaker 1: to Howard Stern. He said I think he and Ivanka
- 34:10Speaker 1: would make a great combination. Yeah, exactly. And what's really
- 34:16Speaker 1: fun about this article. The writer shares a story about
- 34:20Speaker 1: how he was interviewing Trump at his golf course in
- 34:24Speaker 1: Rancho Paulos Verdes, which is very close to here, and
- 34:27Speaker 1: the Trump keeps badgering him to call Tom Brady, and
- 34:31Speaker 1: he's like, Tom will say great things about me. You
- 34:33Speaker 1: got to get Tom Brady on the phone. And the
- 34:35Speaker 1: guy finally is like, fine, I'll call Tom Brady. And
- 34:37Speaker 1: he asked Tom Brady for a quote about Trump, and
- 34:40Speaker 1: Tom Brady says, I really have no interest in political talk.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Right now. I have learned way too much about politics
- 34:46Speaker 1: the last seven months. Let's talk about this upcoming XFL reboot,
- 34:51Speaker 1: which is the most garbage Trump pandering, fucking nonsense I've
- 34:56Speaker 1: ever seen. I hope it made me sad when I
- 34:59Speaker 1: hope thinking of this gave Vince McMahon cte if anyone
- 35:03Speaker 1: wants to read about it. The Make Football Great Again
- 35:05Speaker 1: League is a bad idea by Roger Sherman writing for
- 35:08Speaker 1: The Ringer. Don't support this bullshit because here, like the XFL,
- 35:12Speaker 1: I hated the original incarnation of it where they were like,
- 35:15Speaker 1: we have no rules, and yeah, I mean that was cute.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Coontics made it out of the league into the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Yeah he had a good run somehow, but it was
- 35:26Speaker 1: just they were like, no rules, that's going to make
- 35:28Speaker 1: this league cool and authentic. No, it's going to mean
- 35:30Speaker 1: your receivers can't catch passes because you let defensive backs
- 35:34Speaker 1: punch them in the stomach as they're running downfield.
- 35:37Speaker 3: And then they like, how did they start the game.
- 35:40Speaker 3: They started to start the game with like dodgeball. Like dodgeball.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, they set the ball at the fifty yards and
- 35:47Speaker 1: the teams had to fucking run.
- 35:49Speaker 2: It was still the bacon. Yeah, like a childhood exercise.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Oh see, this is what makes me sad about it
- 35:53Speaker 2: is like d aout er right right, it's thinking about
- 35:57Speaker 2: like where are the American audience for football where they
- 36:00Speaker 2: think it is, right, So like in the nineties, they're like,
- 36:02Speaker 2: I'm going to give you more violent dream, more sex
- 36:05Speaker 2: is going to go like way further past like any
- 36:08Speaker 2: of the rules of football. Right, that's the that's the appeal.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Now it's like, we're going to make these football players
- 36:14Speaker 2: obey us. Yes, that's the that's the fucking gimmick of
- 36:18Speaker 2: that creepy That sucks.
- 36:21Speaker 4: It's selling a different male fantasy because the male fantasy
- 36:25Speaker 4: of that era was to be unbound by restrictions of
- 36:28Speaker 4: your sexuality or your violence, and the male fantasy of
- 36:31Speaker 4: this era is to control the bodies of black men
- 36:35Speaker 4: that are far greater than you from the safety of
- 36:37Speaker 4: your comfort of your own home, where you don't have
- 36:40Speaker 4: to reflect on yourself as a fan. You can just
- 36:42Speaker 4: see obedience and fantasy and acting of following the rules.
- 36:46Speaker 2: But it's also yes, that's true, but also like they're
- 36:49Speaker 2: intentionally removing the cheerleaders. Yes, like that's this strange magmatic Yeah,
- 36:54Speaker 2: they're they're going for really conservative types, which I think
- 36:58Speaker 2: has a very I think this is Trump thinking all right, now,
- 37:02Speaker 2: I got it. Now I know how to go up
- 37:04Speaker 2: against the NFL. We have to just politicize it and
- 37:07Speaker 2: go after the really conservative types who watch football. Now,
- 37:12Speaker 2: like if we can interject some anger about kneeling during
- 37:15Speaker 2: the national anthem and then offer them this alternative, which
- 37:18Speaker 2: that's the creepiest thing about it. The XFL originally was
- 37:22Speaker 2: no rules, and now it's got some very specific rules
- 37:25Speaker 2: which we haven't mentioned yet, but one of them no criminality,
- 37:31Speaker 2: which that's such a racist, dog whistle fucking thing to
- 37:34Speaker 2: put in your NFL rules.
- 37:37Speaker 4: And whereas Vince McMahon has also been investigated for crime, right,
- 37:41Speaker 4: which is a great irony, and if.
- 37:43Speaker 1: You've watched it, he's committed crimes on the air. Yes,
- 37:46Speaker 1: you know, yeah, all players required to stand for the
- 37:49Speaker 1: national anthem? Sure, of course, of course, that's like the
- 37:51Speaker 1: one thing I knew would be in it. Yeah, which
- 37:53Speaker 1: the WWE plenty of wrestlers have been arrested for crimes
- 37:57Speaker 1: and are still in the league, and there's no national anthem.
- 38:00Speaker 1: I don't believe they do well.
- 38:02Speaker 4: They do always in times of a national tragedy, they
- 38:06Speaker 4: for everything. They will say, we want to have given
- 38:08Speaker 4: a moment of silence and hand over the hard They
- 38:10Speaker 4: do many events for the troops, and they perform overseas
- 38:14Speaker 4: and right maybe's and they.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Do play the national anthem.
- 38:16Speaker 4: They have had after nine to eleven they had dead
- 38:19Speaker 4: Jillian Garcia's put.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Then the national anthem.
- 38:21Speaker 1: And that's not like after nine to eleven, of course,
- 38:23Speaker 1: but they've done him.
- 38:25Speaker 3: They've done the national anthem bit more than you would expect.
- 38:27Speaker 3: But Trumps but it's not as regular.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Trump's criticism of espnist that they're not airing the national
- 38:32Speaker 1: anthem before each contest, which is certainly something he doesn't
- 38:36Speaker 1: require of the WWE.
- 38:38Speaker 2: No, there's no way Vince McMahon believes this is the
- 38:41Speaker 2: best product. I mean, like that's what we're getting to, right.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Vince mcman has has his whole life stood for the
- 38:47Speaker 2: opposite of this, like the Attitude era and all wrestling
- 38:50Speaker 2: that led up before it until they went corporate, Like
- 38:52Speaker 2: he believes in the opposite of this. So like this
- 38:55Speaker 2: league is clearly pandering to a real bummer thing, right,
- 38:58Speaker 2: that's having a mic moment, right, Yeah, Well, Vince.
- 39:01Speaker 4: McMahon was never really that radical in terms of what
- 39:04Speaker 4: he wanted to do with wrestling, about not having rules
- 39:06Speaker 4: and stuff like that. He kind of was forced into
- 39:10Speaker 4: making a more extreme product by their demand for people
- 39:14Speaker 4: had seen Japanese wrestling and seen ecw and they wanted
- 39:16Speaker 4: more extreme action.
- 39:17Speaker 3: So he was never really like.
- 39:18Speaker 4: A guy who wanted people to you know, extreme or
- 39:21Speaker 4: like any kind of cage matches. That wasn't really his thing.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Yeah, he sold it a bunch, No, he did, but
- 39:28Speaker 3: that was never like what he thought of as good wrestling.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Miss been one of the guys who looked like bodybuilders
- 39:33Speaker 4: to press slam each.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Other, right, you know, right, wanted he wanted.
- 39:36Speaker 4: He didn't want blood. He didn't want blood or guts
- 39:39Speaker 4: or that's just stuff that he just.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Just a guy. You want to sacrifice some bodies for money, yeah,
- 39:45Speaker 1: and will give you anything you asked for.
- 39:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:48Speaker 4: And to me, the no cheerleader thing in the New
- 39:50Speaker 4: League seems very much a reaction to that kind of
- 39:53Speaker 4: red pill stuff because it's like, you know, in the nineties,
- 39:56Speaker 4: we had like, oh, we want free sexuality, we want
- 39:59Speaker 4: hot lesbian action, want girls who are you know, exhibitionists?
- 40:02Speaker 4: And then I feel like there was almost too much
- 40:04Speaker 4: of that, and now it's like guys reacting that. It's
- 40:07Speaker 4: like she's a slut, she's a whore, and they're kind
- 40:09Speaker 4: of sick of being bombarded with women's sexuality and they
- 40:12Speaker 4: just seem to judge it more where they're just like, oh,
- 40:14Speaker 4: she's a shameless model slut and she won't fuck me.
- 40:18Speaker 4: And they're like, yeah, they're like, let's just remove all
- 40:20Speaker 4: of that for the equation because it's too sticky and uncomfortable.
- 40:23Speaker 2: But also because they I mean, it might just be
- 40:26Speaker 2: practical where because like you can't go a year without
- 40:29Speaker 2: five treating scandals in the NFL.
- 40:32Speaker 4: Where they're like, are you upset at those dirty, filthy
- 40:36Speaker 4: super Bowl halftime shows? And yeah, beyond say it's probably
- 40:40Speaker 4: sick of Jane jac and Beyonce and all.
- 40:41Speaker 3: These black flots. Yeah, I think it's a mix ruining
- 40:45Speaker 3: your football.
- 40:45Speaker 1: I think it's a mix of all of those things.
- 40:47Speaker 1: It's just this strange.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Rising theocracy that I don't think if they really understood,
- 40:53Speaker 2: if they really made the thing they wanted, whether they'd
- 40:55Speaker 2: be happy with it now.
- 40:56Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 40:57Speaker 2: That's the thing is I feel like we're all we're
- 40:59Speaker 2: pitching to an America nobody really wants. Yeah, who wants
- 41:02Speaker 2: this authoritarian, fun, free, fucking.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Twenty five percent of the country. I don't think they
- 41:08Speaker 1: really do. I mean, I know they're voting for it,
- 41:10Speaker 1: but yeah, I don't think that's what I guess we'll see.
- 41:12Speaker 4: I don't think they want it new out of whole
- 41:14Speaker 4: cloth like this. I think they they want the product
- 41:17Speaker 4: they already watched to shift. They don't want a new
- 41:20Speaker 4: product that is all of these things.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I think that. I mean, I don't know.
- 41:24Speaker 2: I have a lot of different theories about this, but
- 41:26Speaker 2: like one of the things is to me, this just
- 41:27Speaker 2: seems like an like old man ideas.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Yeah, like this just seems like like old men who
- 41:32Speaker 1: used to understand things are just now old and the
- 41:35Speaker 1: cultures passed him by. Like, but I don't think force
- 41:37Speaker 1: it back. I don't think it's entirely that. I think
- 41:40Speaker 1: someone somewhere gets that this is going to resonate with
- 41:44Speaker 1: a certain Sure, yeah, it's a demographic in the United States.
- 41:48Speaker 4: Yeah, like a watch like a consumer group, and it's
- 41:51Speaker 4: they're like, what are your top five things that you
- 41:53Speaker 4: would like to change it at the NFL and they
- 41:54Speaker 4: just amalgamated a bunch of you know, questionnaires.
- 41:57Speaker 2: But like, there's no way that this was like we're
- 42:00Speaker 2: going to get New York and Los Angeles and Chicago,
- 42:02Speaker 2: and like we're gonna get both coast to.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Buy in on this league. This way, there's no way.
- 42:06Speaker 1: But that's still a thing that will resonate with Trump supporters,
- 42:09Speaker 1: where they'll be like, we don't give a fuck. Make
- 42:11Speaker 1: the biggest team in Columbus. We don't give a shit.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Like so it's it's it's going to be an exclusively
- 42:18Speaker 2: uh like right wing Trump supporter league.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I mean, they'll get a California team for sure. It'll
- 42:24Speaker 1: just watch It'll just be northern California. Yeah, I guess
- 42:26Speaker 1: that's right. Yeah, yeah, friends. Now, I just don't state
- 42:29Speaker 1: in New York they'll have a Buffalo franchise probably sure.
- 42:31Speaker 3: I just don't know what quality athletes are going to
- 42:34Speaker 3: really want to do this.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Well, I know they will, I know they bodies, but
- 42:38Speaker 1: they won't have if I didn't include it in the notes.
- 42:41Speaker 1: But their budget is only like one hundred million for
- 42:45Speaker 1: the first season, and that's like about ninety million less
- 42:48Speaker 1: than most teams in the NFL individually have to spend
- 42:52Speaker 1: on players each year.
- 42:54Speaker 2: But there's but again, if you watch Hard Knocks or yeah,
- 42:57Speaker 2: there are of those guys who can't make a team
- 43:00Speaker 2: who will take yeah, yeah, one hundred and fifty grand
- 43:02Speaker 2: a year to play football.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's gonna take the same thing as the USFL,
- 43:06Speaker 1: where they're actually getting big name players out of college,
- 43:09Speaker 1: which I can't see happening, especially because one of the
- 43:12Speaker 1: things that causes big name players in college to drop
- 43:15Speaker 1: low enough to where they might be affordable is off
- 43:18Speaker 1: the field problems. Right, So what are they gonna sign
- 43:20Speaker 1: a bunch of goddamn Aaron hernandez is and then straighten
- 43:23Speaker 1: them out? Yeah, in the Trump League, this.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Guy's a great player. He's spin a Koma for four year.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Yeah. This doesn't seem like it's gonna work to me.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I just can't see how. Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 2: No, I don't think I'm wrong. Maybe I don't see
- 43:32Speaker 2: the world for what it is. I just don't see
- 43:34Speaker 2: how it's gonna work.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's gonna be interesting to see how this
- 43:38Speaker 1: plays out. That's why I'm not I don't want to
- 43:40Speaker 1: be so quick to be like boycott the NFL. It's like,
- 43:42Speaker 1: right now, that kind of feels like like you're more
- 43:46Speaker 1: sticking it to the players who have been protesting in
- 43:49Speaker 1: the NFL. It's not a simple answer, yeah, because I
- 43:52Speaker 1: was thinking.
- 43:53Speaker 2: That when the owners were signing that agreement, that like
- 43:56Speaker 2: we're gonna make them so that they all have to
- 43:57Speaker 2: stand for the anthem. Yeah, if I can watch football,
- 44:00Speaker 2: are going to do that. But they've kind of taken
- 44:03Speaker 2: both sides of that argument. And also, yeah, the players
- 44:06Speaker 2: are the ones to lose the money and I and
- 44:08Speaker 2: they deserve to make that money.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I think, you know, like they're incredible what they do.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I don't know. Yeah, it's tough. Oh man, oh boy.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Football shouldn't be this complicated. No, it's impossible to watch
- 44:19Speaker 1: without commentators already. Now we got to get all this
- 44:21Speaker 1: political commentary involved too. We haven't had the president involved
- 44:24Speaker 1: in football this much since Teddy Roosevelt, yeah, or since Obama.
- 44:28Speaker 1: Like I think Obama was always in fantasy leagues and
- 44:31Speaker 1: ship and he'd show up at halftime.
- 44:32Speaker 2: But like Teddy Roosevelt made them change the rules. Oh yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 2: didn't because they were they were dying in the field
- 44:38Speaker 2: right when they were playing like that was like a.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Good running on the greatest generation when you could close
- 44:43Speaker 1: line a motherfucker, I don't think.
- 44:47Speaker 3: Line.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Yeah there are like there's bring back close lines, bring
- 44:52Speaker 1: back letting NBA players dunk their free throws.
- 44:55Speaker 3: I often think, what would happen they used to do that?
- 44:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I need to check. That used to be a
- 44:59Speaker 1: thing you could on the line that you have to
- 45:01Speaker 1: jump from the line. But if you were like like
- 45:03Speaker 1: Wilt Chamberlain, that's just like a little jump in a reach, right,
- 45:06Speaker 1: and you could just dunk your ship. Should absolutely let
- 45:09Speaker 1: him do that. Yeah, let's start our own league. Yeah, honestly,
- 45:12Speaker 1: would it be worth.
- 45:14Speaker 3: X F and you have to do exactly.
- 45:21Speaker 1: It's in the books. We did it all right? Well,
- 45:25Speaker 1: this was a fun episode. Yeah, I guess we'll see
- 45:27Speaker 1: how it shakes out. I still I'm in love with
- 45:30Speaker 1: this theory that Trump's entire presidency is NFL motivated. I'm
- 45:34Speaker 1: gonna fucking run with it. I just think that, like,
- 45:37Speaker 1: has anybody ever treated him legitimately other than TV Russia? Right,
- 45:42Speaker 1: And that's why we are where we are now Russia
- 45:44Speaker 1: and NBC. Yeah, thanks guys, So what do we have
- 45:49Speaker 1: to plug before we get out of here. This is
- 45:51Speaker 1: a Patreon only episode, which, man is the public missing
- 45:54Speaker 1: out because this was fun.
- 45:55Speaker 3: This is really fun so much. You have to Patreon
- 45:58Speaker 3: subscribe to get this.
- 45:59Speaker 1: It's it's fun. Five dollars a month you get all
- 46:01Speaker 1: our shit. Nice. But I'll send it to you if
- 46:03Speaker 1: you want to hear it. I wouldn't be that way.
- 46:05Speaker 3: No, maybe maybe I'll listen to it again. I did
- 46:07Speaker 3: listen to some of my other ones over again.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so much fun. Great, it's interesting to see
- 46:12Speaker 1: what I said. And also we're doing a PUI podcast
- 46:16Speaker 1: at the end of the month live at the Hollywood Hotel.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Oh nice, which is that's where we come out, do comedy,
- 46:21Speaker 1: sober and get fucked up and come back and record
- 46:24Speaker 1: a podcast. So if you want to come to that.
- 46:26Speaker 1: It's the last Saturday of the month at the Hollywood Hotel.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I believe it's October twenty seventh, but if you look
- 46:31Speaker 1: in the twenty seventh isn't a Saturday, then it's not
- 46:33Speaker 1: the twenty seventh, it's whatever the last Saturday of the
- 46:36Speaker 1: month is. I don't write these things down. There's a
- 46:38Speaker 1: good idea it is a twenty seventh, twenty seventh. Yeah,
- 46:41Speaker 1: there it is, Thanks Laura. What do you have to plug?
- 46:44Speaker 3: What do I have to plug?
- 46:45Speaker 4: I'm gonna be a black Hat comics since Saturday, doing
- 46:48Speaker 4: a cosplay shows.
- 46:49Speaker 3: That's gonna be fun.
- 46:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna be.
- 46:50Speaker 3: Hawk girl and I don't know, we get some more.
- 46:54Speaker 3: When is this coming out?
- 46:55Speaker 1: You're just gonna put this UPISCE going up tomorrow?
- 46:58Speaker 3: Tomorrow? Okay? And then on Wednesday Day, I'm gonna bet
- 47:00Speaker 3: the show Bear City in Long Beach. That'll be fun.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Nice Long Beach. Yeah, LBC, so much drama, but now
- 47:07Speaker 1: there's gonna be comedy. It's a little hard.
