• 1:41
Speaker 3: Tuesday morning. Take it easy if you are traveling, although
• 1:44
Speaker 3: it seems like I haven't had a lot of reports
• 1:47
Speaker 3: of traffic issues here now in southern West Virginia it
• 1:49
Speaker 3: seems to be a different story. But around the Charleston
• 1:52
Speaker 3: area roads seem to be wet as as as I'm
• 1:55
Speaker 3: saying this right now, and they tell us that by
• 1:59
Speaker 3: midday afternoon we're going to get that warm wedge in
• 2:02
Speaker 3: here and it's going to probably turn to more rain
• 2:06
Speaker 3: than anything else, so that could do it for us. However,
• 2:08
Speaker 3: things can change. Meteorologist Brian Hughes from Stormtracker thirteen. He's
• 2:12
Speaker 3: becoming a regular on the show the last couple of months.
• 2:14
Speaker 3: Brian Hughes is going to join us to talk about
• 2:16
Speaker 3: it a little bit later on. Also, Judge Mary Claire
• 2:19
Speaker 3: Akers will be stopping by. She is gearing up for
• 2:21
Speaker 3: the annual King of Hearts event this Friday, where she
• 2:24
Speaker 3: plans on marrying up a whole lot of people at
• 2:27
Speaker 3: the courthouse. They do this every year. Talking to her
• 2:29
Speaker 3: about that. Plus, former legislator and now media mogul HD
• 2:33
Speaker 3: Media is Doug Scaff will be stopping by. I want
• 2:35
Speaker 3: to talk to Doug about several things related to media,
• 2:38
Speaker 3: but also a preview of the legislative session that is
• 2:41
Speaker 3: about to take place, and yes to the texture that
• 2:44
Speaker 3: ask about it. I will ask him about the changes
• 2:47
Speaker 3: in the comics in the Gazette and the puzzles. You
• 2:50
Speaker 3: can do whatever you want to, but you go messing
• 2:53
Speaker 3: with people's comics and puzzles and they get a little
• 2:55
Speaker 3: bit bothered about it. So yes, Skaff, just know if
• 2:58
Speaker 3: you're driving in right now. I am going to ask
• 3:00
Speaker 3: you about that as well in your calls and text

• 3:10
Speaker 3: zero eight, want to welcome to the show now Senator
• 3:13
Speaker 3: Ann Sharnock, who's been appointed by Governor Morrisseyat to field
• 3:16
Speaker 3: a vacancy in the seventeenth district. Did I get the
• 3:18
Speaker 3: number right there, Senator, yes, she did. Now are you
• 3:21
Speaker 3: officially Senator? Now have you been sworn in yet?
• 3:23
Speaker 7: I was sworn in Thursday. I am official.
• 3:25
Speaker 3: You have been sworn at and so they were ready,
• 3:28
Speaker 3: well that's coming, that's coming. So yeah, you were appointed
• 3:32
Speaker 3: to that to that seat to fill the vacancy. That
• 3:35
Speaker 3: was the seat that was of the vacancy that was
• 3:37
Speaker 3: created by Senator Eric Nelson right, who was named Secretary
• 3:41
Speaker 3: of Revenue. A lot of folks in the area know
• 3:44
Speaker 3: who you are here in the Kanaal Valley, but for
• 3:46
Speaker 3: those who don't know, give us the bio on An Sharnock.
• 3:49
Speaker 7: I'm a lifelong resident of Kanall County. I'm graduate of
• 3:53
Speaker 7: George Washington, have two degrees from WVU, practice law in
• 3:58
Speaker 7: this town for over four years, served as the Charleston
• 4:03
Speaker 7: Munimal judge for a little bit over twelve years, and
• 4:06
Speaker 7: now I'm in the state Senate.
• 4:09
Speaker 3: So explain that district to us. District seventeen. I always
• 4:12
Speaker 3: like to have people explain the district. What areas do
• 4:14
  Speaker 3: you actually cover?
• 4:16
Speaker 7: District seventeen is wholly within Kannaal Campy.
• 4:19
Speaker 3: It's the one that's holy because the other one is
• 4:21
Speaker 3: all over the place.
• 4:22
Speaker 7: Hey, and then part of Kanall County is also in
• 4:24
  Speaker 7: District seven.
• 4:25
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 4:26
Speaker 7: Yeah, So District seventeen, if you start at the Kanal
• 4:29
Speaker 7: River and go south, it's all of Charleston proper. You
• 4:33
Speaker 7: go to the east and go up to about Marmette.
• 4:35
Speaker 7: You go to the west and you head down through
• 4:37
Speaker 7: parts of South Charleston and Saint Albans. If you cross
• 4:41
Speaker 7: the river, start up at Montgomery, come down the river
• 4:45
Speaker 7: to Greenbrier Street, head out Greenbriar Street and go to
• 4:48
Speaker 7: Pinch and Elkview and Clendennon and head to the west
• 4:51
Speaker 7: for just a little bit assistant though.
• 4:53
Speaker 3: One of the things that I like to bring up
• 4:55
Speaker 3: when I talk to people that represent areas like this
• 4:57
Speaker 3: here in Kanaha County is it is a very diverse area.
• 5:01
Speaker 3: And what I mean is is and listeners hear me
• 5:03
Speaker 3: say this every day about certain areas. The wants, needs, concerns,
• 5:08
Speaker 3: issues with one area of Kanawk County maybe totally different
• 5:11
Speaker 3: than the other areas you serve.
• 5:13
Speaker 7: And this is one of the few districts in West
• 5:16
Speaker 7: Virginia that has such a dichotomy between the urban areas
• 5:20
Speaker 7: of Charleston and the more rural areas once she gets
• 5:24
Speaker 7: outside of Charleston. So it's a mix. I mean, there
• 5:27
Speaker 7: are a lot of needs and they're different based based
• 5:30
  Speaker 7: on the geography.
• 5:31
Speaker 3: How do you plan on attacking that.
• 5:35
Speaker 7: The best way that I can, But you have to
• 5:37
Speaker 7: listen to people. You have to understand what their needs
• 5:40
Speaker 7: are and what their wants are. And I've got big
• 5:43
Speaker 7: ears I can do that.
• 5:44
Speaker 3: Talking to Anne Sharnock again, who is the new State
• 5:46
Speaker 3: Center out of District seventeen the Dave Island Show in
• 5:49

• 6:09
Speaker 3: You talked about you served as as municipal judge for
• 6:11
Speaker 3: a while and you've been around politics, you know, for
• 6:14
Speaker 3: some time. What have you learned in your past experiences
• 6:17
Speaker 3: that you think will make you a good fit to
• 6:19
Speaker 3: be a state senator?
• 6:21
Speaker 7: Well? As a judge, you have to listen, and I
• 6:25
Speaker 7: think I listened pretty well, and I certainly welcome people
• 6:29
Speaker 7: talking to me and getting in touch with me so
• 6:31
Speaker 7: that I can listen to what they want and what
• 6:33
Speaker 7: they need, and what they're complaining about or what they're
• 6:36
Speaker 7: happy about. If somebody would like to call me and
• 6:38
Speaker 7: tell me that things are going well, I would love
• 6:40
Speaker 7: to hear that. So I think that's an important and
• 6:43
Speaker 7: it's just open mind, sound judgment. Those are things you
• 6:48
Speaker 7: have to do as a judge, and I think that
• 6:50
Speaker 7: fits very well with.
• 6:51
Speaker 3: Being a Just like a lot of times, what I
• 6:54
Speaker 3: found in dealing with the folks around the legislature over
• 6:56
Speaker 3: the years, is that there are various walks of life,
• 7:00
Speaker 3: just like with everybody else, makes up who you are
• 7:03
Speaker 3: and things that they've learned, even sometimes when it's not
• 7:05
Speaker 3: in a court room or it's not around you know,
• 7:07
Speaker 3: you mentioned as an attorney and later a judge, It
• 7:11
Speaker 3: makes up who you are.
• 7:12
Speaker 7: Well, certainly your experiences have met My experiences through the
• 7:18
Speaker 7: years have made me who I am today. I am
• 7:20
Speaker 7: not the same girl I was twenty thirty, forty years ago.
• 7:25
Speaker 7: But you add those together and that's who you are.
• 7:28
Speaker 3: What as we look ahead to the session, and of
• 7:32
Speaker 3: course the Governor Morrissey will give his State of the
• 7:34
Speaker 3: State tomorrow night, you folks will gavel in tomorrow and
• 7:38
Speaker 3: then everybody will kind of you know, listen to what
• 7:40
Speaker 3: the governor says and you really get to work. I
• 7:41
Speaker 3: guess on Thursday, what do you see heading into the
• 7:45
Speaker 3: session as the some of the biggest needs for your
• 7:48
Speaker 3: area and what are you looking forward to him? What
• 7:50
Speaker 3: do you want to see happen?
• 7:53
Speaker 7: Well, I think the most important thing is listening to
• 7:56
Speaker 7: the Governor's address tomorrow night. We have spent the last
• 8:00
Speaker 7: two weeks with this discussion about does the state have
• 8:03
Speaker 7: enough money. Is there a four hundred million dollar hole
• 8:06
Speaker 7: or is there not? Depends on who you talk to.
• 8:09
Speaker 7: I'm interested. That's the first thing that interests me in
• 8:12
Speaker 7: his address tomorrow, and then is where are we financially?
• 8:17
Speaker 7: And then second what's his agenda? What does he want
• 8:19
Speaker 7: to see done? What is he proposing? And I think
• 8:23
Speaker 7: that we will you know once I once I you know,
• 8:26
Speaker 7: once we hear that, we'll have a better idea of
• 8:29
Speaker 7: where this session's gonna go.
• 8:31
Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean that's what you have to do is
• 8:33
Speaker 3: every year you kind of got to wait to see
• 8:34
Speaker 3: what the governor's especially when you have a new governor.
• 8:37
Speaker 3: And I think one thing that we have taken away
• 8:39
Speaker 3: so far from the first couple of weeks of the
• 8:41
Speaker 3: Morrisy administration is and it's not better or worse, it's
• 8:45
Speaker 3: just different. It's he's going to be a even though
• 8:47
Speaker 3: they're the same party, he's going to be a lot
• 8:48
Speaker 3: different type of governor. I think than what what now
• 8:51
Speaker 3: Senator Senator Jim Justice was.
• 8:54
Speaker 7: And I agree with you it is it's going to
• 8:56
Speaker 7: be a sea change.
• 8:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. I want to get give you the opportunity
• 9:01
Speaker 3: to thank anyone that you would like to thank you know, family, friends, whomever.
• 9:08
Speaker 3: I'll just give the last thirty or forty seconds to you.
• 9:11
Speaker 7: Go ahead, Well, thank you very much. Of course, I'm
• 9:13
Speaker 7: eternally grateful to Governor Morrissey for appointing me to this position,
• 9:19
Speaker 7: and I so appreciate that and I'm so looking forward
• 9:22
Speaker 7: to it. And of course, you know, I have family
• 9:24
Speaker 7: here in town. I've got a great set of siblings
• 9:28
Speaker 7: and siblings in law and nephews, and they're all big supporters,
• 9:32
Speaker 7: or at least I will say.
• 9:33
Speaker 3: That until you get in there and do something they
• 9:35
  Speaker 3: don't like.
• 9:37
Speaker 7: So I'll hear about that.
• 9:38
Speaker 5: Oh, sure you will.
• 9:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, your friends and family are always really good at that.
• 9:41
Speaker 7: But I just appreciate the trust the Governor's given me,
• 9:44
Speaker 7: and I hope I earn it with the people of
• 9:46
  Speaker 7: the seventeen.
• 9:47
Speaker 3: All right, Well, I appreciate you being here and you
• 9:50
Speaker 3: being one of the locals here, you know, just as
• 9:52
Speaker 3: a Senator Nelson was, he was a regular on the show.
• 9:55
Speaker 3: I expected we'll have you on maybe a couple times
• 9:57
Speaker 3: during the session, either from the capital or from here.
• 10:00
Speaker 3: Have you got settled into the office.
• 10:01
Speaker 7: Yet, I've found my office.
• 10:03
Speaker 3: You vend your office that's step one and I.
• 10:05
Speaker 7: Think that's very important. And yes, I'm getting there. I'm

Speaker 3: there's a lot of differences, you know, between the urban

Speaker 3: the flooding in the Kanawha County. But they're back talking
• 14:17
Speaker 3: about the people of recovery Point. They're going to be
• 14:19
Speaker 3: on the show tomorrow. They've got a big event. It's
• 14:21
Speaker 3: going to be happening soon. It's a musical event, raise
• 14:23
Speaker 3: a little money. We're gonna talk to them about that.
• 14:25
Speaker 3: And Eric Cage, the president of West Virginia State University,
• 14:28
Speaker 3: will be stopping by the show tomorrow as well. Big
• 14:31
Speaker 3: Ley Pigley Wiggly hotline three zero four three four five
• 14:34
Speaker 3: fifty eight fifty eight. Tony Vid Taylor Text three zero
• 14:37
Speaker 3: four nine three five five zero zero. Let's welcome in now.
• 14:40
Speaker 3: Doug scaff of HD Media, former legislature, legislator. You recently
• 14:44
Speaker 3: ran for Secretary of States. You got a lot of
• 14:46
Speaker 3: stuff in your resume, man, a lot of stuff.
• 14:48
Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been I've been around the block a few times.
• 14:50
Speaker 5: It's out there on the capitol for.
• 14:51
Speaker 3: Sure, and probably at least so the last couple of years,
• 14:54
Speaker 3: best known as being the most famous snake bite victim
• 14:57
Speaker 3: in West Virginia history.
• 14:58
Speaker 5: There was two hundred and seven bytes record in West Virginia,
• 15:00
Speaker 5: and I was honored to have four of them, and
• 15:02
  Speaker 5: I don't want any more.
• 15:03
Speaker 3: So that's what that count says, Okay, that counts. That's
• 15:06
Speaker 3: not one bite, that's four.
• 15:07
  Speaker 5: I got my money's worth, that's for sure. Howerheads don't
• 15:10
Speaker 5: mess around in Boom County.
• 15:11
Speaker 3: How is the nobody? People in southern Watreetia don't mess
• 15:14
Speaker 3: around period? So how is the recovery gone? I know
• 15:17
Speaker 3: you probably get tired of talking about this.
• 15:19
Speaker 5: That's the cold weather. It's I have constant throbbing in
• 15:22
Speaker 5: my heel. I've got two dead nerves that are permanently
• 15:24
Speaker 5: damaged for forever. I've got three that are might come
• 15:27
Speaker 5: back over time. It's just a slow process. It's just
• 15:29
Speaker 5: nerve less pain, and you just deal with it. Get
• 15:32
Speaker 5: injections once a month, and not.
• 15:34
Speaker 3: Just something you're gonna have to do, like for for
• 15:35
Speaker 3: the reminder of your life.
• 15:36
Speaker 5: You know what, I'm not complaining. I'm blessed. I got
• 15:38
Speaker 5: You're here. I got to keep my leg I'm here.
• 15:40
Speaker 5: It didn't the snakes didn't hit my son. I just
• 15:43
Speaker 5: I don't wish it on anybody. It's one of the
• 15:44
Speaker 5: most painful things that anybody could go through. And I
• 15:47
Speaker 5: just hopefully educated a few people and brought awareness. A
• 15:49
Speaker 5: lot of these real estate agents and people who put
• 15:51
Speaker 5: signs out there said, hey, you brought you shed some
• 15:53
Speaker 5: light on what I do out there in the weeds.
• 15:55
Speaker 5: For sure, just be careful.
• 15:56
Speaker 3: A lot of people, I think, with your story and
• 15:59
Speaker 3: you and I talked about it all on the show
• 16:00
Speaker 3: and off the show, I think a lot of people thought, Okay, well,
• 16:03
Speaker 3: you get met by a snake, you either die or
• 16:05
Speaker 3: you recover. But there's a lot in the recovery. I mean,
• 16:08
Speaker 3: I had no idea that it was this long night,
• 16:11
  Speaker 3: long term event.
• 16:12
  Speaker 5: I'll have pain forever. I never go. I can't run,
• 16:14
Speaker 5: I can't jump. Well I never did it that well anyways,
• 16:15
  Speaker 5: but I can't. I can't run, but I do go
• 16:17
Speaker 5: to the gym and try to, you know, try to
• 16:19
Speaker 5: work out a little bit, but I just can't put
• 16:21
Speaker 5: a lot of weight to pressure on it.
• 16:22
  Speaker 3: Well, I'm glad you're here, but I'm here. I'm glad
• 16:25
  Speaker 3: you're here.
• 16:26
Speaker 5: Here, I get to live to see another session that's
• 16:28
Speaker 5: not on the outside this time and kind of watch
• 16:30
Speaker 5: all the festivities. So I'm excited for that. And still
• 16:32
Speaker 5: running the papers, and we got a lot going on.
• 16:34
Speaker 5: We keep adding to our portfolio there and HD Media,
• 16:36
Speaker 5: so it's been great.
• 16:37
Speaker 3: Let's start off. I do want to get to the session.
• 16:39
Speaker 3: Let's start off by talking about HD Media. So what
• 16:43
Speaker 3: exactly is your title?
• 16:44
Speaker 5: Again for people that don't I am president, the big
• 16:46
Speaker 5: president of all of HD Media. It's a conglomerate of
• 16:49
Speaker 5: thirteen papers in an outside West Virginia. We're in Virginia
• 16:52
Speaker 5: now and we're over in Ohio. We also print a
• 16:55
Speaker 5: total of thirty two papers from all around the region.
• 16:58
Speaker 5: We have the largest printing press in a three D radios.
• 17:00
Speaker 3: And you still and you're still printing them too.
• 17:02
Speaker 5: We're printing them right here in good old Charleston, West Virginia.
• 17:04
Speaker 5: We people come in just to see our press. We
• 17:06
Speaker 5: had a bunch of students in from WVU last week.
• 17:08
Speaker 5: They just wanted to see the presses. They were so
• 17:09
Speaker 5: fascinated because it's a two story press. It goes it's
• 17:12
Speaker 5: a whole city block almost of a building. And the
• 17:14
Speaker 5: third of it is the printing presses.
• 17:16
Speaker 3: And the history of the of the paper.
• 17:19
Speaker 5: In the history of the paper, I mean, people love news.
• 17:22
Speaker 5: It's just the way they consume it is changing.
• 17:24
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 17:24
Speaker 5: There's people who are always going to want a physical paper.
• 17:26
Speaker 5: And there's a lot of papers, you know, especially done there.
• 17:29
Speaker 5: It is right here, you got there in your hand.
• 17:30
Speaker 5: It's the touch and the feel and the smell of
• 17:32
Speaker 5: the paper. They ain't on your hand. But just seeing
• 17:34
Speaker 5: the kids and the families from the especially some of
• 17:37
Speaker 5: the royal communities, they love seeing that once a week paper.
• 17:39
Speaker 5: We have a lot of weeklies that just come out
• 17:40
Speaker 5: once a week and it's mailed to you. And just
• 17:42
Speaker 5: the way people consume it digitally. Like you all here,
• 17:44
Speaker 5: you got to continue to change. You got to offer video,
• 17:46
Speaker 5: you got to offer podcasts. You gotta change with the times.
• 17:49
  Speaker 3: H It's yeah, it's constantly changing. That's the name.
• 17:52
  Speaker 5: You know.
• 17:53
Speaker 3: We went through the name change a couple of years
• 17:54
Speaker 3: ago from West Virginia Radio Corporation, because radio is just
• 17:57
Speaker 3: one of the things we do. Now it's WVRC media.
• 18:00
Speaker 3: We're on video, we're on you know, digital and websites
• 18:03
Speaker 3: and you guys, I mean me.
• 18:05
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 18:05
Speaker 3: Here's the thing people say all the time that that
• 18:07
Speaker 3: and I hate this term legacy media. They're always crapping
• 18:10
Speaker 3: all over Legacy media is not No, it's not at all,
• 18:14
Speaker 3: and we have the numbers to back that up. People
• 18:16
Speaker 3: are just consuming it in different ways. As you said, done,
• 18:20
  Speaker 3: It's it's all about the personalities. It's like you, I
• 18:22
Speaker 3: get to see your studio here under construction. You know
• 18:24
Speaker 3: it's good or bad. You're gonna be on video now,
• 18:25
Speaker 3: so I get to look at you all the time.
• 18:27
Speaker 3: But No, the thing, the way that people consume it
• 18:29
Speaker 3: is changing, and we must change. If we want to
• 18:31
Speaker 3: deliver news and entertain and inform people, you have to
• 18:34
Speaker 3: do it in whichever way the people want to consume it.
• 18:36
Speaker 3: All right, you know what I'm going to ask next.
• 18:37
  Speaker 5: I know it's coming, don't hit me with it. What's
• 18:39
Speaker 5: the biggest complain of it?
• 18:40
Speaker 3: The biggest complain of the week is is that at
• 18:43
Speaker 3: some point, what last week or whatever, there was a
• 18:46
Speaker 3: change in the comics and and the puzzle page. And
• 18:50
Speaker 3: I'm going to give you a chance. And you know,
• 18:52
Speaker 3: it's kind of funny because I have, you know, have
• 18:54
Speaker 3: all the various mayors on, you know, from all the community,
• 18:56
Speaker 3: from Ayor Goodwin and James and Mullins and all the
• 18:59
Speaker 3: Mayrithon area, and they say the one number one thing
• 19:01
Speaker 3: that they get complaints or concerns about are fireworks and
• 19:04
Speaker 3: Christmas parades. They it's not potholes, not crime, and that's
• 19:08
Speaker 3: the number one complaint about. But there are constantly changes
• 19:12
Speaker 3: that have to happen in this company and your company
• 19:14
Speaker 3: as well. But some changes were made Doug to the
• 19:17
Speaker 3: puzzles and the comics in the in the hard cop
• 19:20
Speaker 3: I guess on the online version two of the of
• 19:22
  Speaker 3: the paper.
• 19:23
Speaker 5: I mean, it's like making sausage. There's so much stuff
• 19:25
Speaker 5: that goes into in news paper. I'm telling you, you just
• 19:27
Speaker 5: don't know. Defendant, go ahead and the com there's no defense.
• 19:30
Speaker 5: My mom is is the biggest creek. I cannot believe
• 19:33
Speaker 5: you missed with dagwood and peanuts and you took some
• 19:37
Speaker 5: of my favorite car. Here's the deal. To make a
• 19:39
Speaker 5: comic space, it doesn't just appear magically and sent to us.
• 19:43
Speaker 5: Five or six different outlets send us different comed shrips.
• 19:46
Speaker 5: You have to pay individually almost for each comic strip.
• 19:48
Speaker 5: And we build it every night. We build a page
• 19:51
Speaker 5: and we try to find, you know, the best and
• 19:53
Speaker 5: what people want in the most popular and yes, one
• 19:55
Speaker 5: of the biggest complaints and phone calls and anything, if
• 19:58
Speaker 5: you mess with the crossword puzzles or the comics, you're
• 20:02
Speaker 5: gonna hear about it. So that is one big things.
• 20:04
Speaker 5: So a lot of things. You think, oh, they just
• 20:05
Speaker 5: buy the newspaper to read the articles and stories. So
• 20:07
Speaker 5: many people buy it for those crossword puzzles every day
• 20:10
Speaker 5: to read the comics. And yes, so it was it
• 20:13
Speaker 5: was a combination of a lot of things. But you
• 20:15
Speaker 5: have to buy the different comics just from different entities.
• 20:17
Speaker 5: And so we were trying to consolidate mainstream and organize,
• 20:21
Speaker 5: you know, our efforts to buy just from one or
• 20:24
Speaker 5: two outlets instead of five or six outlets, and some
• 20:26
Speaker 5: of those did not provide some of the popular things.
• 20:29
Speaker 5: So we're gonna I'm not gonna say they're coming back,
• 20:31
Speaker 5: but we're gonna we're gonna evaluate it. We're gonna see
• 20:33
Speaker 5: and we're gonna work together to see you know what.
• 20:35
Speaker 5: We same thing the stock page, the business page. We
• 20:37
Speaker 5: get that from the AP wire. They just told me
• 20:39
Speaker 5: yesterday they're changing the way that that's gonna look, you know,
• 20:41
Speaker 5: So the way that you see your stocks on the
• 20:43
Speaker 5: business page, the graphs, that's gonna change. They're gonna send
• 20:46
Speaker 5: it to us individually. We're gonna have to come, you know,
• 20:48
Speaker 5: put it together of stocks of local interest is what
• 20:51
Speaker 5: we do, Build it and put it out there.
• 20:53
Speaker 3: All right, talking to a Doug scaff of HD Media,
• 20:55
Speaker 3: but a vallance showing five of eighty live is brought
• 20:57
Speaker 3: to you part by Bridge Valley offering custom tailored trainings
• 20:59
Speaker 3: to supply of skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
• 21:02
Speaker 3: Visit Bridge Valley dot edu. All right, let's focus on
• 21:05
Speaker 3: the legislature. Now, you something that you know just a
• 21:08
Speaker 3: little bit about. What do you make of the changes
• 21:11
Speaker 3: in the Senate? You know, I mean Randy Randy Smith
• 21:13
Speaker 3: is going to be the new Senate President. There's several
• 21:16
Speaker 3: other changes. What do you think about?
• 21:18
Speaker 5: It's exciting how you get to that change? How do
• 21:20
Speaker 5: you get to the Senate President, and there's all this
• 21:22
Speaker 5: jockeying and maneuvering and putting your team together, and it
• 21:24
Speaker 5: is like a little great school election. You know, you're
• 21:26
  Speaker 5: you're sitting there and you're you're who's the right person
• 21:29
Speaker 5: for the job. And I heard him speak a little
• 21:31
Speaker 5: just a while ago at the issues and eggs and
• 21:32
Speaker 5: he goes he is the face of the Senate Caucus,
• 21:34
Speaker 5: but he surrounds himself with a lot of wonderful and
• 21:36
Speaker 5: great minded people that can make it happen. So he
• 21:40
Speaker 5: is an average day West Virginian. You know, I've served
• 21:43
Speaker 5: with Randy. He's a great person. He's down the earth.
• 21:45
Speaker 5: He gets it, you know, and he cares about one thing,
• 21:47
Speaker 5: and that's providing good quality of life and jobs for
• 21:50
Speaker 5: the future and next generations of West Virginians, for the kids.
• 21:52
Speaker 5: He probably said that three or four times today. I
• 21:54
Speaker 5: think he has eleven or twelve grandkids. He has multiple
• 21:56
Speaker 5: kids himself. I mean, he he gets it and he
• 21:58
Speaker 5: just wants to do good for the pull West Virginia.
• 22:00
Speaker 5: And he's got ten, no, I think ten or eleven
• 22:04
Speaker 5: new senators. So that's a lot, you know, you think
• 22:06
Speaker 5: about it, that's you know, a good handle in the
• 22:09
Speaker 5: House of Delegate. You have one hundred members and you
• 22:11
Speaker 5: have a twenty percent of them, you know, change over
• 22:13
Speaker 5: every year, twenty to twenty five percent. So this session,
• 22:16
Speaker 5: everyone's full of optimism and excitement and they're eager to
• 22:19
Speaker 5: get started. And they ran on these platforms and I'm
• 22:21
Speaker 5: gonna go down to Charleston and I'm gonna do this,
• 22:23
Speaker 5: this and this, and then boom reality things.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: Two weeks later, they're jaded.
• 22:28
Speaker 5: Then you got the governor pushes his agenda down and
• 22:30
  Speaker 5: then you know, it's it's it's it's such a conservative
• 22:33
Speaker 5: makeup of both bodies right now, and I think most
• 22:35
Speaker 5: of the items will be aligned on, but you still
• 22:37
Speaker 5: have differences within side the party. You know, you'll have sure,
• 22:41
Speaker 5: you'll have different views. You know, you'll have your your
• 22:43
Speaker 5: center right views or have your far right views, and
• 22:46
Speaker 5: so then you'll start seeing some infighting amongst the people.
• 22:48
Speaker 5: And the first couple of weeks everyone's together, they're all
• 22:51
Speaker 5: rowing in that same boat. And then they get in
• 22:52
Speaker 5: those committee meetings and then then the fun begins. And
• 22:55
Speaker 5: I think the biggest difference this year is the budget.
• 22:58
Speaker 5: You know, this this four hundred million dollar thing, animal
• 23:02
Speaker 5: beast deficit that the governor is saying is out there,
• 23:05
Speaker 5: but depending on who you talk to, I'm not sure
• 23:07
Speaker 5: it's quite all out there. Speaker of the House and
• 23:10
Speaker 5: it's Senate President. They meet regularly with the governor, and
• 23:14
Speaker 5: I know for a fact they even talked about it
• 23:15
Speaker 5: this morning. They don't believe that it's that big of
• 23:17
Speaker 5: a four hundred million dollar deficit that the governor's tout,
• 23:20
Speaker 5: So we just have to wait and see where he's
• 23:21
Speaker 5: getting those numbers. I worked on Finance Committee for numerous years.
• 23:25
Speaker 5: We put together a budget. Senate puts together a budget.
• 23:27
Speaker 5: They come together with the governor's budget as kind of
• 23:30
Speaker 5: the framework, and then you see where the differences are. Okay,
• 23:34
Speaker 5: they feel pretty confident in the House that there's not
• 23:36
Speaker 5: that big a hole that he's talking about. But hey,
• 23:38
Speaker 5: let's go back in time for a minute. You know,
• 23:40
Speaker 5: go back to the Earl Ray Tomlin Day's ear Ray
• 23:42
Speaker 5: Tomlin days. You go back to even the Mansion days.
• 23:45
Speaker 5: Jim and Justice especially, All governors come in on the
• 23:47
Speaker 5: first day and they want to say, Hey, this guy
• 23:49
Speaker 5: is falling. I'm going to be the hero. I'm gonna
• 23:52
Speaker 5: be the one that sets us back on the course.
• 23:53
Speaker 5: You remember that, you know we're gonna have.
• 23:55
  Speaker 3: That's not a Republican or.
• 23:57
Speaker 5: That's just the governors want to come in and they
• 23:59
Speaker 5: want to save the day. And you know, I think
• 24:01
Speaker 5: that's what Morsey. Hey, listen, I want to put the
• 24:02
Speaker 5: snake the flag in the ground. I want to put
• 24:04
Speaker 5: the stake in the ground and say, listen, there is
• 24:07
Speaker 5: hey common sense says, yes, you can't cut all these
• 24:10
Speaker 5: taxes like we've done the last few years, which is
• 24:12
Speaker 5: good for the people, but without having a new revenue
• 24:15
Speaker 5: stream coming in to fill those holes. So at some
• 24:17
Speaker 5: point it might catch up to us. That is correct.
• 24:21
Speaker 5: I agree with the governor on that. So you have
• 24:23
Speaker 5: to have revenue streams to come in to fill the
• 24:25
Speaker 5: holes for the tax cuts that we've made in the past.
• 24:28
Speaker 3: So Senator, I'm sorry. Governor Morrissey came in. Uh from
• 24:33
Speaker 3: day one, as I said, guns a blazing, you know,
• 24:35
Speaker 3: much like Trump, you know, and UH and in Washington said,
• 24:39
Speaker 3: you know, from I'm gonna I'm doing this, and I've
• 24:41
Speaker 3: got executive orders and I've I've got this and what's
• 24:44
Speaker 3: your what's your overall feel about? Uh about the Morrissey administration.
• 24:47
Speaker 5: Well, you know, I think, hey, Morrisey's hands on. I
• 24:50
Speaker 5: mean that one hundred percent. I mean, he's there. He
• 24:52
Speaker 5: wants to be in everything. He he calls me regularly
• 24:54
Speaker 5: and asks how how this playing the media, or how's
• 24:56
Speaker 5: this going to play in the media. Ask for my opinion,
• 24:58
Speaker 5: I ask you here there. Whether it you know it
• 24:59
Speaker 5: takes it or not, that's on him. But he does
• 25:00
Speaker 5: he does care. I mean he is all in.
• 25:03
  Speaker 10: Uh.
• 25:03
Speaker 5: He he wants to be involved in everything. So you
• 25:05
Speaker 5: can't say that he's not going to be present, because
• 25:07
Speaker 5: it's going to be night and day. He's going to
• 25:09
Speaker 5: be around. He's going to see him around the Capitol.
• 25:10
Speaker 3: And he's moved into the governor's mansion.
• 25:12
Speaker 5: He's actually lived in the mansion. He's going to be everywhere.
• 25:14
Speaker 5: That guy tears up the road. I gotta give him that.
• 25:16
Speaker 5: He wears he wears tennis shoes for a reason, you know,
• 25:18
Speaker 5: because he's always on his feet and he's everywhere. That's
• 25:21
Speaker 5: a hands on type of governor. And either you love
• 25:23
Speaker 5: that or you don't. And how he here's here's what
• 25:26
Speaker 5: I'm anxious to see how he gels from with a
• 25:29
Speaker 5: new with the legislature, that's not used to having a
• 25:32
Speaker 5: hands on governor for the past seven or eight years,
• 25:35
Speaker 5: so it's gonna be a little different. He's gonna be
• 25:37
  Speaker 5: I think he's gonna be around. I think he's going
• 25:38
Speaker 5: to see him pop in the committee meetings. I think
• 25:39
Speaker 5: you're going to see him come in and address the
• 25:41
Speaker 5: legislators on a more regular basis and come into their caucuses.
• 25:44
Speaker 5: I think you're going to see that from him. It's
• 25:46
Speaker 5: just the type of person he is.
• 25:48
Speaker 3: And again, as I was talking to Senator Sharnock earlier,
• 25:51
Speaker 3: you know, you don't know exactly what's going to happen
• 25:53
Speaker 3: until he gives that speech tomorrow night. What are you
• 25:55
Speaker 3: looking forward to in that speech? I know you talked
• 25:57
Speaker 3: about the budget, but if you had a whiteboard, Doug,
• 26:00
Speaker 3: and you went in and you said, all right, all right,
• 26:02
Speaker 3: scaff I want you to make a list two three
• 26:05
Speaker 3: for the big things. Obviously, we got to address the
• 26:08
Speaker 3: budget situation because there's saving to be a very big discrepancy.
• 26:11
Speaker 3: I had Larry Pack on the show yesterday and I
• 26:13
Speaker 3: heard him over your event Friday with the Press Association,
• 26:17
Speaker 3: who said, you know, the difference between the budget is
• 26:20
Speaker 3: whether I do it or my wife does the household budget.
• 26:22
Speaker 3: You know, it's good that you use that a couple
• 26:24
Speaker 3: of times. Interesting analogy, but that's one of them. But
• 26:27
Speaker 3: there's also some and that's serious. But there was also childcare,
• 26:32
Speaker 3: you know, foster care issues, things of that nature.
• 26:35
Speaker 5: There's four or five big ticket items and we got
• 26:36
Speaker 5: to stop kicking the can down the road. And it's
• 26:38
Speaker 5: never going to go away. The foster care issue is
• 26:40
Speaker 5: not going to go away. You gotta fix it. You
• 26:42
Speaker 5: got to It's going to be a long term fix.
• 26:43
Speaker 5: I heard speaker Handsha'll say today it's time to roll
• 26:46
Speaker 5: up our sleeves, bring people together and realize you can't
• 26:48
Speaker 5: just pass one piece of legislation and expect the problem
• 26:50
Speaker 5: to go away. You got to bring all the stakeholders together.
• 26:52
Speaker 5: It could take time. You got to set the tone
• 26:54
Speaker 5: for years to come. But you have to have funding
• 26:56
Speaker 5: mechanism for some of our big problems like pe i A.
• 27:00
Speaker 5: It's not going to go away. I mean, we have
• 27:02
Speaker 5: to be good stewards of the people's money. Yes, we
• 27:04
Speaker 5: also also be good employers and we employ a lot
• 27:07
Speaker 5: of people and throughout the state and public employees, and
• 27:10
Speaker 5: then you have to give them. You provide for them,
• 27:12
Speaker 5: just like any other employer insurance. So it's our job,
• 27:16
Speaker 5: you know, if we're going to have employees and act
• 27:18
Speaker 5: as an employer to be good stewards of our employees.
• 27:21
Speaker 5: So one thing we have to do is you can't
• 27:23
Speaker 5: just say, oh, here's eighty six million dollars, let's fix
• 27:25
Speaker 5: this whole. What's worry about in two years from now.
• 27:27
Speaker 5: There needs to be a funding mechanism. There needs to
• 27:30
Speaker 5: be constant funding for that. Another example, public education, all right,
• 27:34
Speaker 5: we talk about it. We school choice is fantastic. You know,
• 27:37
Speaker 5: it's great to go whichever school you want to go to.
• 27:39
Speaker 5: That's fantastic. We've done a great job we focusing on
• 27:41
Speaker 5: giving people choices, allowing people to use you know, certain dollars.
• 27:45
Speaker 5: But what I don't don't forget about the public education system.
• 27:48
Speaker 5: You can't take from one system and give to another
• 27:51
Speaker 5: and not worry about the public education system. If you
• 27:53
Speaker 5: want different results, you want to continue to move our
• 27:57
Speaker 5: state forward, and all these business as that are coming here,
• 28:00
Speaker 5: they look at our education system. They see what type
• 28:02
Speaker 5: of education system we have. You have to quit talking
• 28:04
Speaker 5: about it, and we got to put resources there to
• 28:06
Speaker 5: flip it upside down. Maybe it's a different funding mechanism.
• 28:09
Speaker 5: Figure out how the school formula is calculated. Just dive
• 28:13
Speaker 5: deep into it. Let's put together a two, three, four,
• 28:15
Speaker 5: five year plan. I think you're gonna hear the governor
• 28:17
Speaker 5: talk about public education as well as school choice. You're
• 28:20
Speaker 5: gonna hear them talk about the peia. You're gonna hear
• 28:22
Speaker 5: them talk about the budget. Obviously, economic development and developing
• 28:25
Speaker 5: our fossil fuels. You know, no one knows how this
• 28:28
Speaker 5: tarif that China put on with the coal industry and
• 28:31
Speaker 5: the fifteen percent and whatnot, you know, and export's coming in.
• 28:33
Speaker 5: No one's going to know how that trickles down in
• 28:35
Speaker 5: the little Old West Virginia because we send a lot
• 28:37
Speaker 5: of trouble stuff to China. We send a lot of
• 28:39
Speaker 5: coal outside the state. So we're waiting to see how
• 28:42
Speaker 5: that affects us. But I do know that we have
• 28:44
Speaker 5: you have a governor and you have a legislature who's
• 28:46
Speaker 5: much in liigne to utilizing our fossil fuels and reaping
• 28:49
Speaker 5: the economic benefits of that. But you know one thing
• 28:51
Speaker 5: that's interesting. You talk about the next generation, and I'm
• 28:53
Speaker 5: not sure the Governor's gonna mention this or not but
• 28:55
Speaker 5: AI and all the opportunities out there, AI and all
• 28:58
Speaker 5: that artificial intelligence need energy to power this artificial intelligence age.
• 29:03
Speaker 5: And what does West Virginia have. We have a lot
• 29:05
Speaker 5: of energy. So I hope we can seize the moment
• 29:08
Speaker 5: on that. I hope we can bring these data centers here.
• 29:10
Speaker 5: When I was in the legislature, we traveled all around
• 29:11
Speaker 5: the country talking about bringing data centers here. And you
• 29:14
Speaker 5: have powers by energy, and we have energy. So I'm
• 29:16
Speaker 5: hoping the economic development. If I had to guess, the
• 29:19
Speaker 5: big ticket out of economic development, peia public education. But
• 29:24
Speaker 5: unfortunately there's always those social war issues that pop up
• 29:28
Speaker 5: in the culture. Stuff.
• 29:29
Speaker 3: Don't get me started.
• 29:30
Speaker 5: And it's really two percent. We can agree at the
• 29:33
Speaker 5: legislature and mile years here. I would vote on a
• 29:35
Speaker 5: thousand bills, and probably nine hundred and ninety of them
• 29:38
Speaker 5: we'd all vote together in the line. But then there's
• 29:40
Speaker 5: ten or twelve that get the most heat by us
• 29:42
Speaker 5: the media because they're the most controversial.
• 29:44
Speaker 3: Well, and it's slow hanging fruit a lot of times.
• 29:47
Speaker 3: You know you don't have to I mean, you know
• 29:48
Speaker 3: the stuff that you mentioned is hard. Let me have
• 29:51
Speaker 3: a text here for you, says ask why doesn't West
• 29:54
Speaker 3: Virginia partner with neighboring states for a PEIA co op please?
• 29:58
Speaker 5: I think I think we're gonna have to creative like that.
• 30:00
Speaker 5: I think we're going to look at that. I think
• 30:02
Speaker 5: anything we can do because we can't kee keeping it down.
• 30:05
Speaker 5: We got to think differently, We got to act differently.
• 30:06
Speaker 5: It's not going away. Other states are having the same
• 30:09
Speaker 5: issue we are. And you know, we have so many
• 30:10
Speaker 5: people that live along those neighboring states. You know, we
• 30:14
Speaker 5: got to be able to pay they are what it's
• 30:16
Speaker 5: our educators more and pay them better. But our state,
• 30:18
Speaker 5: you know, people who work on our roads and our instructure.
• 30:20
Speaker 5: Why would they choose to stay in West Virginian work
• 30:22
Speaker 5: if we can't take care of them? So, yes, we
• 30:24
Speaker 5: need to partner with them. We need to circle zones
• 30:26
Speaker 5: around all the different key areas of the stay and
• 30:28
Speaker 5: make sure we're in lined with the job opportunities around
• 30:31
Speaker 5: the states. We don't lose our people.
• 30:32
Speaker 3: All right. I got a couple of HD media questions
• 30:35
Speaker 3: here for you, and we'll close with that question for you, says,
• 30:39
Speaker 3: I know you have no control over coupons, but do
• 30:41
Speaker 3: you know why paper coupon inserts have gotten so minimal
• 30:44
Speaker 3: in the last five years. A lot of us depend
• 30:46
Speaker 3: on those to keep our stockpiles filled up, to help family, friends,
• 30:49
  Speaker 3: and even donations.
• 30:50
Speaker 5: Yes I do, and hey, I want those paper coupons
• 30:52
Speaker 5: back because they pay us to put those paper coupons
• 30:54
Speaker 5: in the paper. But unfortunately, the large look at the retailers.
• 30:58
Speaker 5: Tell me, all the retailers that have moved out Pennies, Macy's,
• 31:01
Speaker 5: you name it, they're all going to digital coupons. Now.
• 31:04
Speaker 5: Look at Kroger's. Kroger's was one of the biggest inserts
• 31:07
Speaker 5: of our papers almost weekly, and they started going digital coupons,
• 31:10
Speaker 5: and they're send it to you. They want all those
• 31:11
Speaker 5: phone numbers you put in to get those Kroger discounts. Yep,
• 31:14
Speaker 5: that's how they track you. They want to be able
• 31:15
Speaker 5: to track you. They want to be able to sendize
• 31:17
Speaker 5: them and prioritize and distinguish who's which coupons go to
• 31:20
Speaker 5: what person, And that's why they did away for it.
• 31:23
Speaker 5: So they're cutting costs just like everybody is. So the
• 31:25
  Speaker 5: big manufacturers, whether it's Walmart, Kroger's, Macy's, Jason, they're all
• 31:29
Speaker 5: getting rid of those coupons and they're going to the
• 31:32
Speaker 5: digital coupons to save money, all right.
• 31:33
Speaker 3: The other one that says I live in Winfield, but
• 31:35
Speaker 3: I received the Canawa Metro instead of a Putnam one
• 31:38
Speaker 3: I've emailed about this.
• 31:39
Speaker 5: Well, that's a great question. Yeah, I'll need to look
• 31:41
Speaker 5: at that. It depends on where you fall and what
• 31:44
Speaker 5: the carriers and what they pick up. So depending on
• 31:46
  Speaker 5: I guarantee you half a Puttnam, it's split because you're
• 31:49
Speaker 5: we a lot of people.
• 31:50
Speaker 3: I live in Taze and I get the I get
• 31:51
  Speaker 3: the Putnam.
• 31:52
Speaker 5: You either put them.
• 31:52
Speaker 3: So obviously to this texture, you're gonna need to move
• 31:55
  Speaker 3: to Taste Valley.
• 31:55
Speaker 5: I think tast value and move over here.
• 31:57
Speaker 3: No, no, no, we'll look at that, all right.
• 31:58
Speaker 5: Final clinical question, reach out to me, send me their address.
• 32:01
Speaker 3: All right, there you go, there you go text, all right,
• 32:02
Speaker 3: final question, serious biz here? All right, what's the future
• 32:05
Speaker 3: look like for Dug scaff What are you gonna do?
• 32:06
  Speaker 3: You're not going away, don't don't try. You're gonna do
• 32:10
Speaker 3: something else? Politically? What is it?
• 32:11
Speaker 5: I love? I love giving back to people. Since I
• 32:13
Speaker 5: was in eighth grade, I served the people of my class,
• 32:15
Speaker 5: my high school, my junior high, my college, I always
• 32:18
Speaker 5: love bringing people together and work, and so it's someday. Yeah,
• 32:20
Speaker 5: I haven't rolled out running for office again when the
• 32:23
Speaker 5: timing's right. But right now it's fun raising my three boys,
• 32:27
Speaker 5: building this this media company, starting over, doing going more
• 32:31

• 32:36
Speaker 5: committees or helping out in the process. I just want
• 32:38
Speaker 5: to help make a difference here, just like you, Dave,
• 32:40
Speaker 5: and whatever I can do to help make a difference,
• 32:42
Speaker 5: I will do that.

Speaker 3: society far more than most all economic type issues. If

Speaker 3: we fix our social issues, the economic issues would solve themselves,
• 35:38
Speaker 3: But our Chambers style Republicans flat out refused to think

• 36:18
Speaker 3: Well, I mean, at this point, if you're it was

Speaker 3: canon a two hour delay, right, all right, so it's
• 36:23
Speaker 3: it's effectively seven forty three now, you know for that,
• 36:26
  Speaker 3: So I don't I mean, I'm gonna talk to Brian
• 36:29
Speaker 3: Hughes a little bit later on. But they seem to
• 36:31
Speaker 3: think that, you know, by by midday that it's going
• 36:35
Speaker 3: to be mainly a rain event. You just came in.
• 36:36
Speaker 3: What's it like out there now? I haven't been out
• 36:38
Speaker 3: in a couple hours.
• 36:39
Speaker 14: Well, it's not bad, I think to anybody who drives
• 36:41
Speaker 14: around here, this is really not a big deal.
• 36:43
Speaker 3: But you also have to keep in mind too that
• 36:45
Speaker 3: you know, there's a big difference between here and when
• 36:47
Speaker 3: you get out into like cap'n Creek or Capital, you know,
• 36:50
Speaker 3: some of those other areas.
• 36:51
Speaker 14: And I've got team drivers, so I'm not super comfortable
• 36:53
Speaker 14: with them driving. I'm fine, but I don't know about them.
• 36:57
Speaker 3: All right, It's time to marry up some people. It is.
• 36:59
Speaker 14: It is that time year again. February fourteenth, Friday, which
• 37:02
Speaker 14: is always a good day for weddings. We've got several
• 37:04
Speaker 14: scheduled and we are ready for more if anybody out
• 37:07
Speaker 14: there wants to do it.
• 37:08
Speaker 3: All right, So explain the history of this.
• 37:10
Speaker 14: Thing, Well, every year I explain it. This started with
• 37:13
Speaker 14: Judge King, whose seat I was eventually appointed to. Before
• 37:17
Speaker 14: I was elected to it, he and I were friends
• 37:19
Speaker 14: and I was in front of him for a long
• 37:21
Speaker 14: time as a prosecutor, and one year he kicked it
• 37:25
Speaker 14: off and decided to do weddings on February fourteenth, and
• 37:28
Speaker 14: it just kind of snowballed from there. He had stopped
• 37:30
Speaker 14: doing it in the later years, but I revived it
• 37:33
Speaker 14: as a way to remember him and think about the
• 37:36
Speaker 14: fund that we had on those days.
• 37:37
Speaker 3: Because it's been incredibly popular of the last couple of year, it.
• 37:40
Speaker 14: Has people really like to do it.
• 37:43
Speaker 3: So what do people need to make appointments? Is that
• 37:46
Speaker 3: the way this works.
• 37:47
Speaker 14: They can they can call my secretary, who is Mindy Martin,
• 37:51
Speaker 14: and that number is three zero four three five seven
• 37:55
Speaker 14: zero three six seven, or they can just walk in.
• 37:58
Speaker 14: The Only thing you need is a valid license, which
• 38:01
Speaker 14: you can get from any county clerk here in West Virginia. Okay,
• 38:03
Speaker 14: I can do the wedding.
• 38:05
Speaker 3: So is there a I mean, you have to forgive me.
• 38:07
Speaker 3: It's been thirty two years since I last got married.
• 38:09
Speaker 3: What is what a required? What's required to get married?
• 38:12
  Speaker 2: Now?
• 38:13
Speaker 14: You go to the county clerk's office, as far as
• 38:15
Speaker 14: I know, you pay them their fee, and they look
• 38:18
Speaker 14: at your license whatever they do, and they give you
• 38:21
Speaker 14: your license and you can get married immediately.
• 38:23
Speaker 3: Okay, media, Because so wasn't there a waiting period of
• 38:25
Speaker 3: want to pull you had to have a blood test?
• 38:26
Speaker 14: I feel like there was, and maybe it was like
• 38:28
Speaker 14: that when jab jump or something.
• 38:30
  Speaker 3: I don't know. There's something third.
• 38:31
Speaker 14: Years ago which I have to say this, Dave. Today
• 38:34
Speaker 14: is my husband's birthday.
• 38:35
Speaker 3: Okay, his birthday, the honorable delegate.
• 38:37
  Speaker 5: The honorable delegate.
• 38:38
Speaker 14: So I'm encouraging folks out there to wish him a
• 38:40
Speaker 14: happy birthday however they can.
• 38:42
Speaker 3: Just to Is it going to involve Relish?
• 38:44
  Speaker 7: I hope.
• 38:45
Speaker 3: So you know this thing and last time I had
• 38:47
  Speaker 3: JB on the.
• 38:48
Speaker 7: Show, he talked about.
• 38:49
Speaker 3: It, this thing between between you and your husband, Delegate
• 38:53
Speaker 3: Jbacres over hot Dog rewichh.
• 38:56
Speaker 14: This whole thing started because he wore a T shirt
• 38:59
  Speaker 14: that said, I think it's a mustard onions I can't remember,
• 39:03
Speaker 14: and he put it up on West Virginia Day and
• 39:06
Speaker 14: I just commented, you forgot the relish and it kicked
• 39:08
Speaker 14: off this whole thing that still lives on.
• 39:10
Speaker 3: It's kind of taken in a life of its own.
• 39:13
  Speaker 9: It has.
• 39:14
Speaker 14: People have really strong preferences about Relish on hot dogs,
• 39:17
Speaker 14: and I do agree.
• 39:17
  Speaker 5: I like it.
• 39:18
Speaker 3: People have strong preferences on hot dogs period, you know
• 39:22
Speaker 3: here and I'm by hot dogs. Judge, this has gone
• 39:25
Speaker 3: away off the rails. I'm by hot dogs like I
• 39:27
Speaker 3: am by pizza. There are different kinds and depends on
• 39:30
Speaker 3: where you My wife is. My wife is from Chicago,
• 39:32
Speaker 3: the Chicago dogs, which is a totally different animals. I
• 39:36
Speaker 3: also like a West Virginia dog, but I also like
• 39:38
Speaker 3: the coney dog. You know, there's no bad hot.
• 39:40
Speaker 14: Dogs, that's true. And I do say, we're in West Virginia.
• 39:43
Speaker 14: We're always free to do what we want here. That's
• 39:45
Speaker 14: our slogan. So however you want your hot dog, that's
• 39:47
  Speaker 14: the right way.
• 39:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, you knock yourself out.
• 39:49
Speaker 14: Yeah, absolutely, I'm winning the Relish wars. By the way,
• 39:51
Speaker 14: I have to say that most people see.
• 39:53
  Speaker 3: Now, I like releisht a hot dog, but I don't
• 39:56
Speaker 3: want it with chili. I want it just maybe relition
• 39:59
Speaker 3: must or the chili in the rallies. Yeah, I don't
• 40:01
Speaker 3: know so much about that. But anyway, all right, so
• 40:04
Speaker 3: I do want to ask you in all seriousness. I
• 40:06
Speaker 3: mean you and I joke a lout, but I do
• 40:08
Speaker 3: want to ask you a very serious question. We'll get
• 40:11
Speaker 3: back to the Valentine's de thing here in a moment.
• 40:13
Speaker 3: A couple of weeks ago, we had a verdict rendered
• 40:15
Speaker 3: by the jury and the White Feather Lance trial in
• 40:17
Speaker 3: your court room. Now, don't want to get into specifics
• 40:19
Speaker 3: or anything like that, but I want to talk about
• 40:21
Speaker 3: the difficulty of handling a case like that that is
• 40:24
Speaker 3: so high profile because this was everywhere, and just talk
• 40:30
Speaker 3: about what goes into that again, not about this case,
• 40:33
Speaker 3: any high profile case.
• 40:34
Speaker 14: Well I can do that. I can talk about court procedures. Yes,
• 40:37
Speaker 14: I'm allowed to talk about that. But just you know,
• 40:39
Speaker 14: for the folks that are listening it, don't understand there
• 40:41
Speaker 14: are rules for judges that dictate that we really we
• 40:45
Speaker 14: can never talk about any case that may wind up
• 40:48
Speaker 14: in front of us. We can never talk about any
• 40:50
Speaker 14: case that is in front of us, so people maybe
• 40:52
Speaker 14: don't understand why we're not able to speak.
• 40:54
  Speaker 7: But that's why.
• 40:56
Speaker 14: For a case like this, you know, there were a
• 40:58
Speaker 14: lot of people there. There were a lot of people
• 40:59
Speaker 14: in the gallery. There were a lot of people in
• 41:01
Speaker 14: and out, so we have to think about security every day.
• 41:04
Speaker 14: We have to make sure we have enough people in
• 41:06
Speaker 14: there to control the crowd. I mean, I'm sure you've
• 41:09
Speaker 14: seen there was the guy in I can't remember what
• 41:12
Speaker 14: state who ran up and tacked the judge in the
• 41:14
Speaker 14: middle of the sentencing, so we have to be very
• 41:17
Speaker 14: cognizant about safety. It's I mean, it can be nerve wracking.
• 41:24
Speaker 14: There's just a lot of people in and out, so
• 41:25
Speaker 14: it can be distracting. But frankly, I'm kind of used
• 41:28
Speaker 14: to it because I tried so many cases as a
• 41:30
Speaker 14: prosecutor and I've been in that environment a lot, so
• 41:33
Speaker 14: it's not really unnerving. The only part to me that
• 41:36
Speaker 14: is different is my back is not to the crowd anymore.
• 41:38
Speaker 14: My face is to the front, so I can see
• 41:40
Speaker 14: all of them, and I think a lot of the
• 41:41
Speaker 14: people in the gallery don't realize I can see what
• 41:43
Speaker 14: you're doing out there all right.
• 41:45
  Speaker 5: You think I can't, but.
• 41:48
Speaker 3: She's a mother and a wife. She sees everything. She
• 41:50
Speaker 3: sees everything. I appreciate you answering that because I thought
• 41:53
Speaker 3: that was something very important. All right, went back to
• 41:56
Speaker 3: why you're here Texas. Does the judge do val renewals
• 41:59
Speaker 3: as well for Valentine's Day? Yes?
• 42:01
  Speaker 7: Absolutely.
• 42:02
Speaker 14: If you want to renew your vows with your Valentine,
• 42:04
Speaker 14: please come in. We were happy to do that as well.
• 42:07
Speaker 14: Bring your friends and family.
• 42:08
  Speaker 5: It's fun, all.
• 42:09
Speaker 3: Right, So let's talk about the procedure again. They need
• 42:11
Speaker 3: to call. I mean, the walk ins are welcome, but
• 42:13
Speaker 3: it might be good to call.
• 42:14
  Speaker 12: Sure.
• 42:15
Speaker 3: I wouldn't think that with valent has they been on
• 42:16
Speaker 3: a Friday, that you might have more people because they
• 42:19
Speaker 3: have the weekend to go. Although it's going to be
• 42:20
Speaker 3: incredibly wet this weekend. I would think that maybe you
• 42:23
Speaker 3: want to, you know, wait a couple of days, but regardless,
• 42:26
Speaker 3: I would think you have more.
• 42:27
Speaker 14: Well, I mean, I think rain is good luck for weddings, right,
• 42:30
Speaker 14: so if it rains on Friday, it's allegedly good luck.
• 42:32
  Speaker 7: I don't know.
• 42:33
Speaker 14: Okay, good, but yes, you can call and make an
• 42:35
Speaker 14: appointment with my secretary of MINDI three three zero four
• 42:38
Speaker 14: three five seven zero three six seven, or you can
• 42:42
Speaker 14: just walk in, but.
• 42:42
Speaker 3: You have to have a valid get your stuff ahead
• 42:45
Speaker 3: of time. Go down to Via.
• 42:46
Speaker 14: Well, you can be from anywhere from West Virginia. I
• 42:48
Speaker 14: do a lot of weddings folks from Putnam County and
• 42:50
  Speaker 14: Cable County.
• 42:50
Speaker 3: Okay, there you go. So all right, So just from
• 42:52
Speaker 3: your respective county clerk where you reside. It doesn't have
• 42:55
Speaker 3: to be or does it happen mean if it does
• 42:58
Speaker 3: not have to be a county can county license just
• 43:01
Speaker 3: a county clerk. Any county clerk can do. Yeah, all right,
• 43:03
Speaker 3: and we'll check in with you live from the courthouse
• 43:05
  Speaker 3: as well.
• 43:06
Speaker 14: Friday, I have to plug Jab's birthday once again. Go ahead,
• 43:09
Speaker 14: Happy birthday, JB. I love you very much. I hope
• 43:11
  Speaker 14: you're having a good day.
• 43:12
Speaker 7: I'm sure that you're very busy.
• 43:14
Speaker 3: Well, you know he's about to you're about to get
• 43:16
Speaker 3: rid of him for a couple of months with the
• 43:18
Speaker 3: with the session going on, So that's true.
• 43:19
Speaker 14: One other thing I want to explain about Judges kind
• 43:21
Speaker 14: of came to mind is that luck I get to
• 43:24
Speaker 14: sit with him at the State of the state, which
• 43:26
Speaker 14: is quite a privilege and I enjoy that. But you
• 43:28
Speaker 14: will not see any of the judges clapping or standing
• 43:31
Speaker 14: up like everyone else in the crowd when that goes on,
• 43:33
Speaker 14: because we can't. So I like to explain that ahead
• 43:36
  Speaker 14: of time.
• 43:37
  Speaker 3: That's that's interesting. I didn't know that. I'm going to
• 43:39
Speaker 3: have you on sometimes, judge, just to talk about rules
• 43:41
Speaker 3: people don't know about. I'm happy to do that.
• 43:43
Speaker 14: I would love to tell everyone why, because people scratch
• 43:46
Speaker 14: their heads all the time. Why didn't the judge do this?
• 43:47
Speaker 14: Why didn't the judge you that? And there's a lot
• 43:49
Speaker 14: of reasons for all of those things.
• 43:51
Speaker 3: Well, let's well, we'll block out some more time for
• 43:53
Speaker 3: you on that. You'n going to talk about that.
• 43:55
Speaker 14: But anybody who wants to get ready our wedding, I
• 43:57
Speaker 14: can't talk anyone who wants to get married. Please, you're welcome.
• 44:01
Speaker 14: Anybody who doesn't have a present for their Valentine thinks, hey,
• 44:04
Speaker 14: let's do avour renewal. That's smart.
• 44:06
  Speaker 5: It's good.
• 44:07
  Speaker 7: Women like that.
• 44:07
Speaker 3: Appreciate that texture point that, all right, Judge Mary Clareakers.
• 44:11
Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, all right.

  Speaker 6: It's been a long morning.
• 47:54
Speaker 5: You think you think? All right?
• 47:56
Speaker 3: All right? All right? So where are we right now?
• 47:58
Speaker 3: I'm stuck. I haven't looked out the window. And because
• 48:00
Speaker 3: I have this little radio thing, I do. So what's
• 48:02
  Speaker 3: going on?
• 48:03
  Speaker 12: Now?
• 48:03
Speaker 3: How long is it going to last? And when the
• 48:04
  Speaker 3: spring here go?
• 48:06
Speaker 10: Spring is not here getting here soon enough? So I'll
• 48:09
Speaker 10: start there first. But right now, listen. More than anything,
• 48:13
Speaker 10: this storm has overperformed across parts of the Paintsville, Logan, Madison,
• 48:19
Speaker 10: Danville areas, back over to Beckley. Significant amount of accidents
• 48:25
Speaker 10: on the urnpikeer in the Beckley area down on sixty
• 48:27
Speaker 10: four east of Beckley. But you get up to the
• 48:31
Speaker 10: Huntington I sixty four area Charleston, everything is in pretty
• 48:35
Speaker 10: good shape. Main roads are fine, They're just wet. The
• 48:37
Speaker 10: stone's been coming down, so it's going to continue to
• 48:40
Speaker 10: come down for at least about another hour or two
• 48:42
Speaker 10: before the rain showers start mixing again within the next
• 48:44
Speaker 10: hour across the canal valley, and then we are going
• 48:47
Speaker 10: to continue to see the snow slowly switching over to
• 48:50
Speaker 10: rain as we head into the afternoon.
• 48:52
Speaker 3: I think one Brian possibly had some people confused, was
• 48:55
Speaker 3: that the winter storm warning goes till tomorrow morning. But
• 48:59
Speaker 3: you guys have been saying all this thing's pretty much
• 49:01
Speaker 3: going to be out of here. I mean, I mean,
• 49:02
Speaker 3: the rain's going to stick around, which is more problematic
• 49:04
Speaker 3: perhaps than what the snow is. But the snow and
• 49:07
Speaker 3: things like that are going to pretty much move out
• 49:08
Speaker 3: here for our area about afternoon.
• 49:10
Speaker 10: Right, Yeah, exactly. I mean I've said that from the
• 49:13
Speaker 10: very beginning. I'm more concerned about the water part of
• 49:16
Speaker 10: things than i am the snow. At all, but in
• 49:19
Speaker 10: fact and said, you know, all these schools of Long
• 49:22
Speaker 10: Eyed sixty four should have never.
• 49:23
Speaker 6: Gone on a two hour deway.
