- 0:51Speaker 1: years strong. We got a great show for you this week.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Warren. I'm here on my buddy Len Hunsicker.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Hey you doing Len, I'm doing well.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I play Everybody's having a good week out there.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Absolutely. I hope you're having a good week whenever you're
- 1:02Speaker 1: listening to this, if you're in your car, if you're
- 1:03Speaker 1: on a treadmill, if you're taking a walk, taking a run,
- 1:06Speaker 1: wherever you are, we hope that you are doing well.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And if you're on YouTube, hope you're enjoying the content here.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Give this video a like and make sure you subscribe,
- 1:15Speaker 1: Share it with your friends and families out there who
- 1:18Speaker 1: may be Philadelphia sports fans. Been doing it twelve years,
- 1:22Speaker 1: as I mentioned, twelve years strong, and we love talking
- 1:25Speaker 1: about these Phillies sports teams. And we've got a ton
- 1:28Speaker 1: to get into this week. We're certainly going to talk
- 1:30Speaker 1: about the fact that the Philadelphia seventy six ers now
- 1:32Speaker 1: have the number three overall pick in the NFL Draft.
- 1:36Speaker 1: We're going to get into Pete Rose and how he
- 1:39Speaker 1: has officially been reinstated in Major League Baseball now can
- 1:44Speaker 1: possibly be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame even
- 1:47Speaker 1: though he's no longer with us. We'll dive into that.
- 1:49Speaker 1: We're going to talk about Brandon marsh on this Phillies
- 1:51Speaker 1: team as well. Since returning to the Phillies after his
- 1:55Speaker 1: rehab assignment, he's really been killing it. And from there,
- 1:59Speaker 1: we're gonna get into some Phillydelphia union talk. And then
- 2:01Speaker 1: finally the Philadelphia Flyers they have made a new hire
- 2:06Speaker 1: as their head coach. We're going to dive into it
- 2:08Speaker 1: and certainly get into a lot of Flyers talk with
- 2:10Speaker 1: our guests this week before we're thrown down on the table,
- 2:13Speaker 1: We've got Kelly Hinkle from Broadstreet Hockey dot Com. So
- 2:17Speaker 1: that's that's the agenda, folks, that we're gonna be getting into.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Len If you noticed I didn't mention the Eagle schedule.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I didn't mention it at all, buddy, because guess what, still,
- 2:26Speaker 1: we don't cover it because it's ridiculous, no offense to
- 2:30Speaker 1: anybody else out there.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I mean, it's like months away before the season even
- 2:35Speaker 2: begins to start, so it's just like I don't know, like, yeah, hell,
- 2:38Speaker 2: I mean, I get it. It's fun to you know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: just kind of look ahead, you know. Maybe to me,
- 2:44Speaker 2: the big thing is if and this is something that
- 2:46Speaker 2: I've done in the past and maybe some of you have.
- 2:49Speaker 2: If you're planning a trip to an away game, yes,
- 2:52Speaker 2: getting to see Okay, what are the weekends we're looking at?
- 2:54Speaker 2: What are the most appealing destinations? Yes, most appealing games
- 2:58Speaker 2: we might go to. That's that's where it gets really
- 3:01Speaker 2: fun for me. Other than that, you know, I don't know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: I can't really because.
- 3:05Speaker 1: You've done fans of Philly before, right, and there's no
- 3:07Speaker 1: promo here with them or anything.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no promo here. But you know they you
- 3:11Speaker 2: know they do they do top notch work. I'm not
- 3:14Speaker 2: gonna you know, just because they don't sponsor us asn't
- 3:17Speaker 2: mean I can't you know, acknowledge when they're when they
- 3:20Speaker 2: do something well and they do a good job.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Absolutely, So we're not folks. We don't get into the
- 3:25Speaker 1: Eagle schedule. We haven't for years and years and years.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Like Len said, it's just so early to be talking
- 3:32Speaker 1: about it. It's kind of just like it'd be filler
- 3:35Speaker 1: quite frankly for us. That's not what we want to do,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and it's there's a lot going on this week. We
- 3:40Speaker 1: do have a good amount of stuff to talk about. Absolutely, well,
- 3:42Speaker 1: let's dive into it, because I cannot believe what happened.
- 3:46Speaker 1: You Eric myself were in our homes and we are
- 3:49Speaker 1: watching the NBA Draft lottery Len and all of a sudden,
- 3:53Speaker 1: we're like, oh my gosh, this is going to happen
- 3:55Speaker 1: for the seventy six ers. They got a top four pick,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and at first we didn't think they had at it.
- 4:00Speaker 1: There was there was all this confusion, and then all
- 4:02Speaker 1: of a sudden they're in the top four, and then
- 4:04Speaker 1: all of a sudden they get the number three overall pick.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And the implications of this what it means for the
- 4:13Speaker 1: future of this team and this franchise here. Look, they're
- 4:17Speaker 1: not going to get Cooper Flag, They're likely not going
- 4:20Speaker 1: to be drafting Dylan Harper out of Rutgers. Ace Bailey
- 4:24Speaker 1: really seems like the guy who probably should be drafted
- 4:28Speaker 1: Darryl Moore in my opinion, that that's what I'm thinking
- 4:31Speaker 1: at this point. But we're certainly going to get into
- 4:34Speaker 1: it here. But I don't know what were your overall thoughts,
- 4:36Speaker 1: because I was like crap in my pants. I was.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I was like, I cannot believe Adam Silver let this
- 4:41Speaker 1: happen for the seventy six ers. Can't believe you let
- 4:44Speaker 1: it happen.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Well, it's actually kind of funny because you know, you
- 4:47Speaker 2: mentioned being at home for it. I was not at home.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I was on riving Yeah. No, I was driving back
- 4:52Speaker 2: home from South Carolina. Oh, and I was listening to
- 4:56Speaker 2: the to the you know, the lottery show on Sirius,
- 4:59Speaker 2: you know, while I was on the road, and I
- 5:00Speaker 2: happened to look down on my phone and I saw
- 5:02Speaker 2: a couple of texts and it was you guys, and
- 5:04Speaker 2: it was like, and there must have been some confusion,
- 5:06Speaker 2: because I think there was a texture either you or
- 5:09Speaker 2: Eric you knowing you know, Silver screwed us again, or
- 5:11Speaker 2: just saying to that effect where I think there was
- 5:14Speaker 2: initially maybe a thought that they didn't get one of
- 5:18Speaker 2: the top picks, and I guess it conveyed Oklahoma City.
- 5:21Speaker 2: But you know, then shortly after, you know, we found
- 5:24Speaker 2: out that it was you know them and Charlotte and
- 5:26Speaker 2: San Antonio and ultimately Dallas that made the top four.
- 5:31Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean interesting, I mean, obviously I'm glad
- 5:34Speaker 2: to get to keep the pick. But and we'll talk
- 5:37Speaker 2: about what you think they should do and what we
- 5:40Speaker 2: how we think things are going to fall. I'm gonna
- 5:43Speaker 2: be up front right now and say I would not
- 5:46Speaker 2: be surprised at all if they trade this pick, oh
- 5:49Speaker 2: my gosh, and try to get a you know another,
- 5:52Speaker 2: cause Daryl Morey doesn't care about the future. He cares
- 5:56Speaker 2: about right now. He cares about winning right now. He
- 5:59Speaker 2: cares about keeping his job right now. And that's all
- 6:02Speaker 2: any GM ever cares about is keeping their job, and
- 6:07Speaker 2: how you do that is by winning. So they're not
- 6:11Speaker 2: He's not worried about what Ace Bailey or VJ. Edgecomb
- 6:15Speaker 2: is going to be three to four years down the road.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I can promise you that right now. So that doesn't
- 6:19Speaker 2: mean that they're going to trade the pick right but
- 6:23Speaker 2: I definitely like if you, if you ask me, gun
- 6:26Speaker 2: to your head, what do you think they're going to do?
- 6:29Speaker 2: I think that they try to trade the pick?
- 6:31Speaker 1: Wow cely do I Maybe I'm maybe I'm thinking too
- 6:34Speaker 1: logically about this right now, because like on paper, I
- 6:38Speaker 1: think the Sixers need exactly what Ace Bailey offers this
- 6:42Speaker 1: team right now forward, who can develop into an elite
- 6:45Speaker 1: shot making threat from the perimeter, which they desperately need.
- 6:49Speaker 1: He has the physical tools to be a pretty good
- 6:52Speaker 1: defensive player in this league as well. And yes, I
- 6:55Speaker 1: do think the front office and Daryl we are going
- 6:58Speaker 1: to go through all the options here. They're going to
- 7:00Speaker 1: look into all the options, including trading the pick like
- 7:04Speaker 1: you're talking about. But to me, it feels like Bailey
- 7:08Speaker 1: is likely the best outcome here in terms of moving
- 7:14Speaker 1: forward with this team. If you have the Ace Bailey,
- 7:17Speaker 1: Joe el Embiid, Tyree Smaxi, Paul George, and Jared McCain,
- 7:22Speaker 1: that's starting fine, sounds pretty good.
- 7:25Speaker 2: You're thinking of it rationally, and you're also thinking of
- 7:28Speaker 2: it from the standpoint of somebody who's going to be
- 7:31Speaker 2: here ten years from now still watching this team. Daryl Morey,
- 7:35Speaker 2: I would be shocked if he is still here ten
- 7:38Speaker 2: years from now. So that's the lens you're looking at
- 7:40Speaker 2: it through. And you know, there's a lot of things
- 7:43Speaker 2: that could happen in addition to the Sixers, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 2: possibly chopping the pick san Antonio. I mean, there's rumblings
- 7:50Speaker 2: that Giannis is open to move out of Milwaukee, and
- 7:54Speaker 2: right now the Spurs are the hot rumor in terms
- 7:58Speaker 2: of giving up the number two pick. Dylan Harper is
- 8:01Speaker 2: a guy that could be considered a franchise player. He
- 8:04Speaker 2: does not fit in with the fit isn't there in
- 8:07Speaker 2: San Antonio because you have Daron Fox and you have
- 8:10Speaker 2: Stefan Castle who won Rookie of the Year. Do you
- 8:12Speaker 2: need another guard for that reason. I even saw a
- 8:16Speaker 2: couple of mock drafts that said maybe the Spurs go
- 8:18Speaker 2: Ace Bailey at two because that's more of a need.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Same thing with the Sixers, who are also a little
- 8:24Speaker 2: bit guard heavy, and then maybe Dylan Harper falls the Sixers.
- 8:28Speaker 2: So there's a lot of things that have to play out.
- 8:30Speaker 2: There's a lot of, you know, just scenarios that are
- 8:34Speaker 2: going to play out, and a lot of stuff that
- 8:36Speaker 2: you know you're gonna hear. I've heard things about Ace
- 8:39Speaker 2: Bailey in terms of yes, he can shoot, Yes he's
- 8:41Speaker 2: got the link, all that stuff, but a lot of
- 8:43Speaker 2: people are not really on board with his decision making
- 8:47Speaker 2: with the ball. He has turnover prone. So if Sixers
- 8:51Speaker 2: do go in that direction, you're going to have to
- 8:53Speaker 2: wait on him to develop as a player a little bit,
- 8:56Speaker 2: you know, because he's got those deficiencies in his game,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and so for that reason, he's a little bit polarizing,
- 9:02Speaker 2: whereas I've heard a name like VJ. Edgecomb if if
- 9:05Speaker 2: if the top two are indeed you know, Flag and
- 9:08Speaker 2: Harper than a guy like VJ. Edgecomb, who doesn't the
- 9:11Speaker 2: fit isn't as good with the Sixers, but he's more
- 9:14Speaker 2: of a you know, well rounded player, a good defensive player,
- 9:19Speaker 2: isn't there, Yeah, but super athletic guard. But you know,
- 9:26Speaker 2: the upside with Bailey might be higher, But you know,
- 9:29Speaker 2: I guess it's all about your comfort level with the
- 9:31Speaker 2: risk there, and I think there is some risk with Bailey,
- 9:33Speaker 2: but he would be my pick. He would be the
- 9:37Speaker 2: person I would want in terms of what I think
- 9:40Speaker 2: is going to happen when what I want to happen
- 9:42Speaker 2: are two different things. I would like to see them
- 9:44Speaker 2: take Bailey, but yeah, who knows, who knows?
- 9:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't know yet, And so we're certainly going
- 9:49Speaker 1: to talk about it more in the coming weeks before
- 9:52Speaker 1: this NBA draft and again a critical draft for them.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You know, we've got a critical draft with the Philadelphia Flyers,
- 9:58Speaker 1: which we're going to be talking about out with our
- 10:00Speaker 1: guest Kelly Hinkel in a little bit. So with these
- 10:03Speaker 1: two teams, the Philadelphia seventy six Ers and Flyers, two
- 10:07Speaker 1: imperative drafts that are right around the corner here. So Len,
- 10:11Speaker 1: anything else for the Sixers before we move on, because
- 10:13Speaker 1: we've got a jam back show this week.
- 10:15Speaker 2: No, it's just gonna be interesting following, you know, the
- 10:18Speaker 2: rumors and the workouts and things of that nature and
- 10:21Speaker 2: just seeing like, you know, do they you know, do
- 10:25Speaker 2: they really think that you know, he's the guy or
- 10:27Speaker 2: or is because I don't. I don't think Giannis is
- 10:30Speaker 2: going to be coming to Philadelphia. I just don't.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know I was him.
- 10:34Speaker 2: If I was him, I'd rather go to San Antonio
- 10:36Speaker 2: and play with wem Begnyaya. Yeah, uh Wembanyama. But uh,
- 10:40Speaker 2: you know, who knows?
- 10:41Speaker 1: Who knows? Yeah? Who who knows? What's gonna happen? From
- 10:44Speaker 1: a money standpoint, you just never you never know what
- 10:46Speaker 1: this freaking seventy six ers team well sort of like
- 10:48Speaker 1: going to be following it from here on out here
- 10:50Speaker 1: at the PSD podcast Show. But let's move on to
- 10:54Speaker 1: the next topic that we wanted to dive into, and
- 10:56Speaker 1: it is the fact that Pete Rose is now eligible
- 11:02Speaker 1: to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame after
- 11:04Speaker 1: he was officially reinstated this week along with all the
- 11:10Speaker 1: shoeless Joe Jackson, fifteen other deceased baseball players that were
- 11:16Speaker 1: initially removed from Major League Baseball's permanent list of band players.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And this was according to a memo that came out
- 11:23Speaker 1: from the league's commissioner. So it is possibly going to happen.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I was gonna say likely, but possibly going to happen.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Here Len and I got to say, you know, how
- 11:36Speaker 1: many times have we talked about this over the course
- 11:38Speaker 1: of many years on this podcast show. You know, and
- 11:42Speaker 1: we have our feelings about whether or not Pete Rose
- 11:46Speaker 1: should be in the Hall of Fame. I think that
- 11:49Speaker 1: from a fan standpoint, we would like to see it
- 11:52Speaker 1: because of his contributions, of course to the game. I
- 11:55Speaker 1: know I've said a number of times on this show
- 11:57Speaker 1: that I think players should be inducted into various sports
- 12:02Speaker 1: and professional sports hall of Fames because their story contributed
- 12:07Speaker 1: to that particular sport. Certainly Pete Rose did. I would
- 12:12Speaker 1: have loved for him to have been a better human
- 12:14Speaker 1: being and for being Baseball's all time hits King to
- 12:20Speaker 1: be enshrined in the Sports Museum in the Baseball Hall
- 12:24Speaker 1: of Fame, Yes he should be there, but of course
- 12:28Speaker 1: we know that it's tarnished, you know, when you're betting
- 12:31Speaker 1: on your own team, as he did decades and decades ago.
- 12:34Speaker 1: But he's no longer around, and I think that in
- 12:37Speaker 1: itself kind of just lends weight to how Major League
- 12:42Speaker 1: Baseball handles itself at times. You know, I mean, the
- 12:46Speaker 1: guy as of as much of a piece of garbage
- 12:49Speaker 1: as he was in life at times. You know, he
- 12:52Speaker 1: I think he deserved to be in before he died,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and now hopefully it will happen, because I hope it does,
- 12:58Speaker 1: regardless of you know, how we lived as personal life.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I don't know what are your thoughts here at this point, buddy.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you still have the you know, just because he's
- 13:06Speaker 2: reinstated doesn't automatically mean he's going to get in. And
- 13:09Speaker 2: you still have the quote unquote gate gatekeepers of the
- 13:12Speaker 2: game with the writers and you know, the you know,
- 13:15Speaker 2: the I guess Veterans Committee after that, so you know,
- 13:20Speaker 2: he's not a slam dunk to get in right away anyway.
- 13:24Speaker 2: But to me, it just I mean I don't. I
- 13:28Speaker 2: don't want him to hang out with my family. I'm
- 13:30Speaker 2: not asking him to hang out with me. Well he
- 13:32Speaker 2: won't be any Well, let's just let's just go with
- 13:37Speaker 2: if he was living. You know, I'm not looking to
- 13:40Speaker 2: build a personal connection there. As a baseball player. Did
- 13:45Speaker 2: he contribute to the story like you said? And and
- 13:48Speaker 2: was he? Was he a good player?
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Or great player? I mean, I think that the biggest
- 13:55Speaker 2: argument against him, if you want to look at it
- 13:57Speaker 2: from just a stats standpoint, is you could maybe call
- 14:01Speaker 2: him a compiler, a guy that was around for twenty
- 14:04Speaker 2: four years. He is the all time hit leader. He's
- 14:07Speaker 2: also the all time leader in games played, played, appearances,
- 14:10Speaker 2: and at bats. So if you want to say, well,
- 14:12Speaker 2: you know, he hung around long enough, but there still
- 14:17Speaker 2: has to be a reason for them to keep you
- 14:18Speaker 2: around long enough, right, right stuff. So to me, you know,
- 14:23Speaker 2: you're supposed to go up there and get a hit,
- 14:25Speaker 2: and he did it more than anybody.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yep.
- 14:27Speaker 2: That's where that's the argument, And that was he was
- 14:31Speaker 2: a part of one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history,
- 14:33Speaker 2: in the Big Red Machine. I don't know what else
- 14:37Speaker 2: you want right there. I mean, he's in. I'm sorry.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I know, you know, if you're looking at it from
- 14:43Speaker 2: an objective baseball standpoint, I don't know how you keep
- 14:47Speaker 2: him out.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Like I said, I would have loved if he had
- 14:50Speaker 1: been a better person in his personal life.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I wish everybody was exactly what make this world a
- 14:55Speaker 2: lot better?
- 14:56Speaker 1: There you go, there you go. Nobody is perfect, and
- 14:59Speaker 1: yeah he was a he was a real slimeball for
- 15:03Speaker 1: a lot of different things in terms of his life.
- 15:05Speaker 2: But you know, at the end of the day, again,
- 15:07Speaker 2: reprehensible human being. Yeah, so was Ty Cobb and Cobs
- 15:10Speaker 2: in there. Yes, I guess, I guess. I wonder it
- 15:14Speaker 2: seems like now the criteria is, okay, you're band, you
- 15:18Speaker 2: have to die and then will reinstate you.
- 15:20Speaker 1: So I wonder that means the questionable thing here with
- 15:23Speaker 1: this crap, you know what I mean, It's like, now
- 15:25Speaker 1: you're dead, now we'll consider it. Yeah, it's it's kind
- 15:29Speaker 1: of a I mean to me, it's an fu from baseball,
- 15:33Speaker 1: is what it is. You know.
- 15:36Speaker 2: I guess the steroid guys they're they're not banned, so
- 15:39Speaker 2: I mean they're you know, they're still on the ballot.
- 15:42Speaker 2: So I guess it's a different kind of circumstance and
- 15:45Speaker 2: you're gonna see with Pete Rose, but a right put
- 15:49Speaker 2: him in, put him in, He's.
- 15:50Speaker 1: In absolutely all right. Well, as we're moving along with
- 15:54Speaker 1: the show and the topics that we're going to be
- 15:56Speaker 1: diving into this week here and before we uh take
- 16:00Speaker 1: our first break here, wanted to get into some Phillies talk,
- 16:03Speaker 1: but specifically with one center field and that is Brandon Marsh.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I mean, and the question we have is has he
- 16:10Speaker 1: really turned the corner here since returning to the Phillies
- 16:14Speaker 1: after his rehab assignment and the minors and before Tonight's
- 16:17Speaker 1: absolutely debacle of a game with or against the Cardinals.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And I should say, we're recording this on Wednesday, May fourteenth.
- 16:26Speaker 1: What a horrendous game by this Phillies team. The pitching
- 16:30Speaker 1: it was, it was horrendous. Aaron Nola and then the
- 16:33Speaker 1: bullpen it was it was.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Easy to me. To me, he was easy. The biggest
- 16:37Speaker 2: question of this year. Yeah, I mean, there's I don't
- 16:42Speaker 2: know what's happening, Yes, I really don't.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yes, But before May fourteenth, here this Wednesday, Brandon Marsh
- 16:49Speaker 1: was slashing four, twelve, four, forty four and five eighty eight.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Those are his slash numbers, So we wanted to give
- 16:57Speaker 1: our thoughts on what Brandon Marsh's strong return really could
- 17:01Speaker 1: mean for the team here. Can he keep this going
- 17:04Speaker 1: and being this productive? I mean, is he gonna have
- 17:06Speaker 1: slash numbers like this in July? Probably not. But the
- 17:10Speaker 1: fact of the matter is, after his rehab assignment, Len,
- 17:13Speaker 1: he found some consistency. He really did. And granted it's
- 17:16Speaker 1: only eighteen played appearances coming into this Wednesday night game,
- 17:21Speaker 1: but he got off on the wrong foot at the
- 17:24Speaker 1: beginning of this season and he struggled, struggled, struggled and
- 17:29Speaker 1: went on the il with that hamstring injury. And again
- 17:33Speaker 1: after the rehab assignment at Lehigh Valley, He's now shown
- 17:37Speaker 1: us something. From an offensive standpoint, I don't necessarily think
- 17:41Speaker 1: he's getting lucky. I think he has found something. He
- 17:44Speaker 1: needs to keep that consistency going, because that's what this
- 17:46Speaker 1: team needs desperately at this point. From a batting standpoint,
- 17:50Speaker 1: they need some sort of consistency. And again, it's not
- 17:52Speaker 1: gonna be batting four twelve, you know, from here on out.
- 17:56Speaker 1: But that consistency, I think is what is really needed,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and I think random Marsh could actually help provide it
- 18:02Speaker 1: to this team. What are you thinking? I I think
- 18:07Speaker 1: he's an average where Yeah, I mean, look, obviously he
- 18:12Speaker 1: was on the lowest of low's, you know, before he
- 18:17Speaker 1: went on the injury list, and you know who knows.
- 18:19Speaker 2: You know, maybe that contributed to to the batting woes.
- 18:22Speaker 2: You know, he was hitting zero ninety five when in
- 18:25Speaker 2: his last game on April sixteenth, before he went in
- 18:28Speaker 2: an ops of three eighty seven, which is nothing. You know,
- 18:32Speaker 2: since then he has raised his numbers up. They're still subterranean.
- 18:36Speaker 2: He's still hitting below the Mendoza line at one eighty six.
- 18:38Speaker 2: But you know, he's he's a fourth outfielder on a
- 18:45Speaker 2: on a contending team. And look, I know the Phillies
- 18:47Speaker 2: are contending team too, but I I I don't really
- 18:51Speaker 2: see Brandon Marsh at this point as someone who is
- 18:55Speaker 2: an every day outfielder. I don't know. I I just
- 19:00Speaker 2: I just don't.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And that's so much tup me. I just think, yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 1: you know, I don't really know how much room there
- 19:08Speaker 1: is for growth at this point either, like he he
- 19:10Speaker 1: is what he's going to be. I think I don't.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I don't think that there's another level waiting to be
- 19:16Speaker 2: unlocked here. So yeah, he's gonna you know, the law
- 19:19Speaker 2: of averages is gonna it's gonna work its magic and
- 19:22Speaker 2: he's going to round himself out. And you know he's
- 19:24Speaker 2: not he's currently hitting one to eighty six. Well, he's
- 19:26Speaker 2: not going to be down there forever. He'll probably finish
- 19:29Speaker 2: a year like two forty or something like that. You know,
- 19:32Speaker 2: he'll hopefully he continues this hot streak for a while.
- 19:35Speaker 2: That would be great. Any any help that the Phillies
- 19:38Speaker 2: can get would be great. But you know, to expect
- 19:42Speaker 2: him to carry the load for you know, months at
- 19:44Speaker 2: a time is asking a lot for a guy of
- 19:47Speaker 2: his caliber.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I mean, you make some really good points at the
- 19:50Speaker 1: beginning of the season when when Rob Thompson said, you know,
- 19:54Speaker 1: we want him to be the every day center fielder.
- 19:56Speaker 1: We want him hitting against lefties and given him struggles,
- 19:59Speaker 1: you know, was all for it. I said, absolutely, let
- 20:02Speaker 1: him take the bull by the horns and let him
- 20:04Speaker 1: get this done. So has the chance, has the opportunities
- 20:08Speaker 1: a veteran on this team and just completely stumbled out
- 20:13Speaker 1: of the gate. And I'm thinking, oh gosh, okay, there
- 20:14Speaker 1: goes my take. You know, we hardly ever do any
- 20:17Speaker 1: hot takes or anything like this on the show, and
- 20:19Speaker 1: I'm thinking, boy, that really that really stunk. But now
- 20:22Speaker 1: with this consistency that we're seeing from him after his
- 20:25Speaker 1: rehab assignment, thinking to myself, it's look, it's baseball. This
- 20:29Speaker 1: stuff happens. Guys get streaky.
- 20:31Speaker 2: You're gonna go awful streaks like he was on, and
- 20:34Speaker 2: you're gonna get on hot streaks like he is on. Yeah,
- 20:37Speaker 2: So that's that's the game. That's how it goes, you know.
- 20:41Speaker 2: And he is a guy that can, you know, play
- 20:43Speaker 2: a lot of games for you. He can give you
- 20:45Speaker 2: that versatility in center or left field, and you can
- 20:48Speaker 2: use them where you want to use him. And ideally,
- 20:51Speaker 2: you know, that's.
- 20:51Speaker 1: What would happen.
- 20:52Speaker 2: But I mean, I just I don't know. I I
- 20:55Speaker 2: don't know if I consider him to be an every
- 20:58Speaker 2: day major league gutfield.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's just me. They had them in a
- 21:01Speaker 1: platoon for how many years, you know what I mean?
- 21:04Speaker 1: There was a platoon for many years. I guess there's
- 21:06Speaker 1: a reason why. I guess there's a reason why I'm
- 21:08Speaker 1: not out managing there. Huh.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Probably a lot of reasons.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, all right, buddy, Before we go to a break.
- 21:16Speaker 1: You have anything else with regard to Phillies or Brandon
- 21:19Speaker 1: Marsh too.
- 21:20Speaker 2: You know, we did talk about the awful game tonight.
- 21:23Speaker 2: They was a doubleheader. They did win the first game
- 21:26Speaker 2: of the doubleheader two to one, so you know, just
- 21:29Speaker 2: want to throw that out there. I mean, you know,
- 21:31Speaker 2: they did. I think the Cardinals were on a ten
- 21:33Speaker 2: game win streak, which the Phillis busted up there and
- 21:36Speaker 2: they have started a new one at one by beating
- 21:40Speaker 2: Phillies tonight. So yeah, you know, well hopefully the Phillies
- 21:43Speaker 2: can move on. They showed a stretch of the games
- 21:46Speaker 2: coming up and they're playing Pittsburgh, They're playing Colorado, and
- 21:50Speaker 2: then they're playing the Athletics. And I'm sorry, but Pittsburgh
- 21:55Speaker 2: and Colorado those need to be sweeps.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yes they do.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Those those they have to Those are not teams that
- 22:01Speaker 2: you drop games to. Those are bad, bad, bottom of
- 22:06Speaker 2: the of the drek, you know, just just bottom of
- 22:09Speaker 2: the barrel baseball teams. Colorado, especially at least at least
- 22:13Speaker 2: the Pirates have some interesting players. And I think the
- 22:16Speaker 2: Phillies are going to run into Paul Skeins, which is
- 22:18Speaker 2: going to be a challenge. Ye, So you know, I'll
- 22:20Speaker 2: give a little bit of grace, but I still think
- 22:23Speaker 2: that the Phillies should not be dropping a game to
- 22:25Speaker 2: either of those teams.
- 22:26Speaker 1: All right, very we'll see what happened. Yeah, we'll see.
- 22:28Speaker 1: We'll see what happens for sure, And we're gonna certainly
- 22:30Speaker 1: be talking about the Phillies in the weeks to come
- 22:32Speaker 1: and months to come, of course. But before we go
- 22:36Speaker 1: to our break, if you are watching us on YouTube,
- 22:39Speaker 1: subscribe and you can hit that bell to be notified
- 22:42Speaker 1: and we post new videos. If you are listening to
- 22:44Speaker 1: us on whatever podcast platform you're on, Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
- 22:49Speaker 1: subscribe over there as well. We are on various social
- 22:52Speaker 1: media sites. We are on Instagram, Twitter, slash x, I'm
- 22:56Speaker 1: over on TikTok at mister Jeff Warren like our Facebook page.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Over on threads as well, and you can catch me
- 23:05Speaker 1: on Blue Sky. Jeff Warren just searched me out there.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Then you're not gonna be getting on social really anytime
- 23:13Speaker 1: soon again, are you? I don't know.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I think about it every now and again, and I'm like,
- 23:20Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 23:20Speaker 1: You're enjoying it. You're enjoying life without it.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, it's life is life is better without social media?
- 23:28Speaker 3: Is?
- 23:29Speaker 2: I think a lot of the uh, not a lot,
- 23:33Speaker 2: but some of the problems in this country, yes, could
- 23:36Speaker 2: be solved of social media, just in a way.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Oh you inches Whistland Dixie. Right, you take a swig there, buddy.
- 23:43Speaker 1: We're gonna take a break and we're going to be
- 23:45Speaker 1: back in just a bit with some Philadelphia Union talk
- 23:47Speaker 1: and some Flyers talk. Stick with us, all right, we
- 23:51Speaker 1: are back, and why do why don't we get into
- 23:55Speaker 1: that Philadelphia Union talk that we talked about earlier. They're
- 23:59Speaker 1: number three in the Eastern Conference at this point in
- 24:01Speaker 1: the season. Then they look and appear as though they
- 24:05Speaker 1: have the depth and identity to really keep things pushing
- 24:09Speaker 1: forward here With this team, I thought was interesting. So
- 24:14Speaker 1: they had a draw against Columbus and that was an
- 24:17Speaker 1: interesting match. I didn't get a chance to watch the
- 24:20Speaker 1: entire match, but Daniel godzag gasdag sorry, who initially was
- 24:27Speaker 1: given to Columbus for I think like four million dollars
- 24:30Speaker 1: or so interesting watching him out there. Not sure he's
- 24:34Speaker 1: really going to be the type of fit that Columbus
- 24:37Speaker 1: needs from him with his skill set. But what I
- 24:40Speaker 1: thought was interesting in the matchup, I don't know if
- 24:43Speaker 1: you did you watch the matchup at all. Like I said,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I only saw I caught.
- 24:45Speaker 2: The second half of the game, and that was a
- 24:47Speaker 2: tough one because that was a you know, they were
- 24:50Speaker 2: up two to one with a couple of minutes left
- 24:52Speaker 2: and Columbus scored a goal to draw even, and it
- 24:57Speaker 2: just it feels like on their in their home stadium,
- 25:02Speaker 2: the Union led a couple of points slip through their
- 25:04Speaker 2: fingers that they should have had that game.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Yeah, something that I noticed. And when I went over
- 25:08Speaker 1: to a site that we'd like to go to Philadelphia,
- 25:12Speaker 1: soccernow dot com. Uh, you know, we have we have
- 25:14Speaker 1: some friends over there that that do some great writing.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Our friend Josh Schuster comes on the pod every now
- 25:19Speaker 1: and again to talk about the the Union as well.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Kai Wagner was very interesting in this game. He had
- 25:29Speaker 1: an excellent game defensively, but he wasn't the focal point
- 25:35Speaker 1: of the Union's build up. You know, in previous mass matches,
- 25:39Speaker 1: his his his crosses were the team's main creative outlet.
- 25:43Speaker 1: But this time the Union found ways to kind of
- 25:45Speaker 1: build through the midfield and right side as well. And
- 25:48Speaker 1: I thought that was an interesting aspect of this game
- 25:50Speaker 1: where they didn't necessarily need to rely on that part
- 25:54Speaker 1: of kai Wagner's offensive prowess. And even though again it
- 25:59Speaker 1: was it was it was a draw, they only got
- 26:02Speaker 1: one point out of that particular game. This team is
- 26:05Speaker 1: still showing us that they have depth and that they
- 26:08Speaker 1: have a certain energy level with within them, I think,
- 26:11Speaker 1: and being number three in the Eastern Conference has not
- 26:14Speaker 1: nothing to sneeze about, given last year and what the
- 26:16Speaker 1: expectations were for this team coming into this season. Len
- 26:20Speaker 1: I think that, uh, I think we're gonna start. I
- 26:23Speaker 1: would still see some good stuff from the Union from
- 26:25Speaker 1: here on out. Except for tonight. I think they the
- 26:27Speaker 1: last time I know, they they won. They did they win.
- 26:31Speaker 1: They were down like two, they were they were getting there.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they were down to nothing, and they came off
- 26:37Speaker 2: the canvas and and they actually won that game three
- 26:39Speaker 2: to two. Oh my gosh, against you know, against the
- 26:42Speaker 2: n l A Galaxy team, the defending MLS Cup champions.
- 26:46Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean that's uh, that's and look it's
- 26:49Speaker 2: at home, you know, but that's still that's a good win.
- 26:51Speaker 2: That's a that's a really good win, especially coming back
- 26:54Speaker 2: the way that they did.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I didn't think they were going to win that I
- 26:56Speaker 1: was driving, I was driving my kids around to their
- 26:58Speaker 1: activities tonight, just checking all my to see what the
- 27:00Speaker 1: score was. They were down to nothing. I was like, ah,
- 27:02Speaker 1: this is done. Yeah.
- 27:04Speaker 2: No, they came back and won that game. So that's
- 27:07Speaker 2: I mean, that's a great sign right there.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely are Are you liking what you've been seeing
- 27:13Speaker 1: thus far? Just in terms of, you know, there's a
- 27:16Speaker 1: new coach here with this team, it just seems fresh.
- 27:20Speaker 1: It just seems like we're seeing a fresh Philadelphia Union
- 27:23Speaker 1: team here.
- 27:25Speaker 2: It definitely does. I mean they you know, they they
- 27:28Speaker 2: far exceed granted my expectations coming in the season. It
- 27:33Speaker 2: would be hard for them to be lower than they were.
- 27:36Speaker 2: To be dead honest with you, I really did not
- 27:38Speaker 2: see this. So that's a credit you know, to to
- 27:41Speaker 2: the team and and the new coaching staff that's come
- 27:43Speaker 2: in here that they've done what they've done so far.
- 27:46Speaker 2: So yeah, I from what I've seen so far, I'm
- 27:52Speaker 2: very very impressed. You know. It's still there's those moments
- 27:56Speaker 2: like I mentioned with you know, in the Columbus game
- 27:59Speaker 2: where you just like, oh man, you you just let
- 28:02Speaker 2: a huge opportunity sip through your fingers to pick up,
- 28:05Speaker 2: you know, a couple of points on a team that's
- 28:06Speaker 2: right in front of you in the standings. Yeah, you know,
- 28:09Speaker 2: maybe you draw even you know things, maybe if it
- 28:12Speaker 2: ends up, you know, being tied, you know, coming in
- 28:15Speaker 2: the seating at the end of the year, maybe there's
- 28:16Speaker 2: a goal differential, which the Union currently have a goal
- 28:19Speaker 2: differential plus eleven. You know, so you know that that
- 28:22Speaker 2: is you know, every every inch that you can get
- 28:26Speaker 2: you need, especially in those in those games against those
- 28:28Speaker 2: teams that are directly above you. So that one was
- 28:32Speaker 2: a bummer. That one was kind of I watched it
- 28:35Speaker 2: and I it just I got it it. It definitely
- 28:38Speaker 2: made me mad. But by and large, the way that
- 28:42Speaker 2: they performed this season is like I said, way outperformed
- 28:46Speaker 2: what I thought was absolutely yeah, absolutely all right.
- 28:49Speaker 1: We just wanted to do some quick Union talk there
- 28:53Speaker 1: and uh, you know, we we certainly have to lend
- 28:56Speaker 1: and our discussion here before we get to our disco
- 29:00Speaker 1: version with Kelly Hinkel in my interview with her about
- 29:03Speaker 1: this Flyers offseason where the team is going. Today was
- 29:07Speaker 1: a huge day, a huge day, folks, for this Flyers
- 29:10Speaker 1: team and organization. As Danny Brier and the Flyers front
- 29:15Speaker 1: office made the coaching higher. Then a new era is
- 29:20Speaker 1: upon us. Rich Tockett, Rick Tockett, Rick Tockett, did I say.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Rich, Yeah, you did? What am I doing?
- 29:32Speaker 1: It's late?
- 29:32Speaker 2: I I ask myself that question every time I do
- 29:35Speaker 2: a show with you. I know, what is he doing?
- 29:38Speaker 1: God him? I'm tired. It's late. Uh. Rick Tocket their
- 29:43Speaker 1: next head coach. I'm trying to do the build up
- 29:46Speaker 1: here and I completely drop the ball. I just.
- 29:53Speaker 2: You're you're, you're that shortstop that's trying to make the
- 29:55Speaker 2: flashy play yes, instead of just just fundamentally just getting
- 29:59Speaker 2: in front of the ball scooping.
- 30:01Speaker 1: It up everyone. I have no flash. There's no flash.
- 30:05Speaker 2: There's an attempt at flash, but it usually it's the
- 30:09Speaker 2: flash of an airplane going into the ground.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Or it's something like that, you know, car crash. All right, Well, yes,
- 30:20Speaker 1: Rick Tocket, folks, he is the Flyer's next head coach.
- 30:24Speaker 1: A lot of us thought this could possibly happen. I
- 30:28Speaker 1: was thinking that there were other options, perhaps for the
- 30:31Speaker 1: Flyers to take a lot of talent out there, and
- 30:34Speaker 1: I think for where this team is right now, in
- 30:36Speaker 1: the middle literally the middle of this, everybody says the
- 30:41Speaker 1: word rebuild, and we've certainly said it on this show too,
- 30:43Speaker 1: But just the recalibration of who this Flyers team is,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I feel like I feel like I'm going to use
- 30:55Speaker 1: a word that the kids are. The kids say it's
- 30:57Speaker 1: mid It's like a mid to type of decision. I'm like,
- 31:01Speaker 1: I'm like kind of excited it way, but then I'm
- 31:04Speaker 1: kind of like I have this like optimistic aspect of
- 31:07Speaker 1: this lynn and then I have this other side of
- 31:10Speaker 1: me that's like what the majority of Flyers Nation is
- 31:13Speaker 1: saying online now, it's just part of the old boys club.
- 31:17Speaker 1: He was a former player. Of course they're going to
- 31:19Speaker 1: do this. This is the same thing they always do.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Like I get it, but there's still that part of
- 31:24Speaker 1: me that is that has the optimistic aspect like I
- 31:28Speaker 1: do every freaking year with this team, even though it's
- 31:31Speaker 1: a heartbreaker.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I don't know where are you at right now. I
- 31:37Speaker 2: want to be optimistic. I truly do, I really do.
- 31:42Speaker 2: But this, to me, I think Rick Hockett was always
- 31:46Speaker 2: their first choice. Yeah, I think he was always their first, second,
- 31:50Speaker 2: and third choice all at the same time. Had the
- 31:53Speaker 2: guy from Denver not re signed David Carl the University
- 31:58Speaker 2: of Denver. Had he not, you know, going back to school,
- 32:00Speaker 2: maybe they would have given him a more serious look.
- 32:03Speaker 2: But I think Tockett was the guy that they wanted
- 32:05Speaker 2: all along. And it is you know, I've saw I've
- 32:08Speaker 2: seen so many arguments, you know, on Facebook today where
- 32:12Speaker 2: I still am. I just lurk. I don't post anything,
- 32:15Speaker 2: so don't feel the need to look me up, but
- 32:18Speaker 2: I do look at accounts and and you know, people
- 32:21Speaker 2: were going back and forth. Well, you know the guys
- 32:23Speaker 2: they brought in, Vigo and Tortorella and Lobolette. They weren't
- 32:26Speaker 2: flyers guys. But it's just tough when you look at
- 32:29Speaker 2: the at the you know, look at the organization and
- 32:32Speaker 2: you see Danny Brier, former flyer, Keith Jones, former flyer,
- 32:37Speaker 2: Rick Tockett now former flyer, Bob Clark senior advisor, former flyer,
- 32:41Speaker 2: John Leclair, former flyer, Like it's just it's like the
- 32:46Speaker 2: most Yeah, it's the most incestuous organization. I have friends
- 32:52Speaker 2: from a company I worked that you know a while
- 32:55Speaker 2: ago that we still joke about it, and I we
- 32:57Speaker 2: were talking about it today and I made mentioned about
- 33:00Speaker 2: talk it doesn't work out. You still have to get
- 33:01Speaker 2: through you know, Sean Antoski and Trent Klatt and other
- 33:05Speaker 2: Flyers of the past as head coaches before you maybe
- 33:08Speaker 2: go in another direction. And I think I even said, like,
- 33:11Speaker 2: congrats to whoever they pick six overall, because not only
- 33:14Speaker 2: do they maybe have an NHL career ahead of them,
- 33:16Speaker 2: but thirty years from now the Flyers will hire them
- 33:19Speaker 2: after GM or head coach, so they've got that to
- 33:21Speaker 2: look forward to. It's just it's just them from the Oregons.
- 33:28Speaker 2: So when you when you get stuck in a malaise
- 33:31Speaker 2: where you haven't made the playoffs in a few years
- 33:35Speaker 2: and you have that reputation, that's what your fan base
- 33:38Speaker 2: is going to do. Sorry, it's it's just what it is.
- 33:41Speaker 2: So you can't really, I think blame people. My bigger problem,
- 33:46Speaker 2: you know with the whole Rick Hocket thing is, yes,
- 33:49Speaker 2: he did win the Jack Adams Award, I believe two
- 33:52Speaker 2: years ago in Vancouver for the good season he had there.
- 33:57Speaker 2: But if you look in the nine years he's been
- 33:59Speaker 2: a head coach, which he's only made the playoffs twice.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Right, So.
- 34:04Speaker 2: What am I exactly supposed to get excited about here?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Right?
- 34:09Speaker 2: Yes, there's not really a track record of great success here,
- 34:14Speaker 2: So you know, for that reason, I just don't know, like,
- 34:18Speaker 2: you know, I'm glad that you know, he was a
- 34:21Speaker 2: you know, he you know, was a good player for
- 34:24Speaker 2: the Flyers. You know, he'll you know, have some of
- 34:26Speaker 2: that hard news attitude that you know really gets some
- 34:29Speaker 2: of this fan based horny for whatever reason. Yeah, you know,
- 34:34Speaker 2: all the girls that loved him that are like in
- 34:36Speaker 2: their late forties and early fifties, Yeah, they'll be thrilled.
- 34:41Speaker 1: So there's that.
- 34:44Speaker 2: But you know, look, you know, you give the guy
- 34:46Speaker 2: a chance. You know, I I do I want them
- 34:49Speaker 2: to succeed, Yes, of course I do. I think that
- 34:52Speaker 2: they're still a ways away talent wise. I don't think
- 34:55Speaker 2: Rick Tockett or Scottie Bowman or any great NHL coach
- 35:00Speaker 2: you can ever think of, you know, is going to
- 35:03Speaker 2: do much with a team that has no first line center, Yeah,
- 35:07Speaker 2: no number one defenseman. The goaltending is atrocious. There's you know,
- 35:13Speaker 2: it's a team that just you know has all of
- 35:15Speaker 2: the bottom six guys and the bottom two pairing guys
- 35:18Speaker 2: you could ever want, yep, but very little of the
- 35:22Speaker 2: guys up front, the stars that you need to make
- 35:25Speaker 2: plays in this in this game and they don't have them,
- 35:30Speaker 2: and until they get them, you know, and I don't
- 35:33Speaker 2: you know, I don't know what they're going to do
- 35:35Speaker 2: in this draft here. You know, the hopefully they get
- 35:39Speaker 2: a player that's going to help him out, you know,
- 35:41Speaker 2: you never know, they have a number of picks to
- 35:44Speaker 2: go with here, and you know, ideally this hopefully we
- 35:47Speaker 2: come back from going man that twenty twenty five draft.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Look at all the contributors they got for that team. Yes,
- 35:53Speaker 2: that's what I want more than anything.
- 35:55Speaker 1: But I don't want them to swing too big, to
- 35:58Speaker 1: be like this guy has trump tremendous, a tremendous upside,
- 36:02Speaker 1: tremendous ceiling.
- 36:04Speaker 2: I think, I mean, I think that the Flyers are
- 36:08Speaker 2: more likely to keep the pick than the Sixers. But
- 36:12Speaker 2: I think the Flyers it's not gonna happen this year,
- 36:15Speaker 2: I don't think, because I don't think enough money freeze up.
- 36:18Speaker 2: But I think next year, the next offseason, I think
- 36:21Speaker 2: money is going to free up, and I think the
- 36:22Speaker 2: cap is going to go up as well, and I
- 36:24Speaker 2: think that the Flyers are going to go more towards
- 36:28Speaker 2: you know, bye bye bye, you know, and and just
- 36:31Speaker 2: try to bring in talent, which you know is fine
- 36:34Speaker 2: as long as you you know, get the right players
- 36:36Speaker 2: and chemistry is there sign them to you know, eight
- 36:39Speaker 2: year contracts and they get hurt two years into it
- 36:41Speaker 2: and all that stuff that seems to happen all the
- 36:44Speaker 2: time in Philadelphia. Yeah, so we'll see, wait and see.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like I want to be optimistic, but
- 36:55Speaker 1: I just I feel so mid about this right now,
- 36:58Speaker 1: but I want I want to be optimistic about.
- 37:00Speaker 2: So we're gonna be talking about of course you do. Yeah, yeah,
- 37:03Speaker 2: And I'm interested in hearing you know, that interview. Just
- 37:07Speaker 2: go want to hear her thoughts on you know, some
- 37:09Speaker 2: of the the prospects because at this point, that's what
- 37:12Speaker 2: I'm looking at. And you know, we don't watch any
- 37:14Speaker 2: of these games. None of us have access to like
- 37:16Speaker 2: the you know, Canadian Hockey League, the juniors, you know,
- 37:19Speaker 2: not on TV or anything like that. We don't really
- 37:22Speaker 2: watch that stuff. So yeah, you know, I can say
- 37:25Speaker 2: anything I want about any of these prospects, but I've
- 37:27Speaker 2: never seen any of them play, so what do I know. Yeah,
- 37:30Speaker 2: but you know, there are some guys that interest me.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Guys I've read up on and I have tried to
- 37:35Speaker 2: read up on a lot of these guys. But yeah,
- 37:38Speaker 2: I'll be interested to hear what other people think in
- 37:40Speaker 2: terms of who they would like to see them take
- 37:42Speaker 2: at that six pick.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Absolutely, and we're going to get into more NHL draft talk,
- 37:47Speaker 1: some more Flyers draft talk on the PSD podcast show
- 37:50Speaker 1: here in the future for sure. And yeah, the draft's
- 37:53Speaker 1: right around the corner. I meant end of end of June.
- 37:56Speaker 2: It'll be in the June, I believe.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's like twenty seventh, perhaps somewhere around that.
- 38:00Speaker 1: But anyway, folks, that's gonna do it for us. Right
- 38:04Speaker 1: here with Len, we are going to be getting to
- 38:06Speaker 1: our interview and discussion with Kelly Hinkle from Broadstreet Hockey
- 38:10Speaker 1: dot Com in just a bit, Len, Buddy, you got
- 38:12Speaker 1: anything else before I let you go here? No? No,
- 38:17Speaker 1: I am good. All right, sounds good, Well, buddy, We'll
- 38:21Speaker 1: be seeing you later. Folks. We are going to take
- 38:23Speaker 1: another quick break. But again, if you are watching on YouTube,
- 38:27Speaker 1: like and subscribe to us seriously like just we we
- 38:32Speaker 1: we want more. Please love us, love us, love us exactly.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Were doing well on the audio side here. The video
- 38:39Speaker 1: stuff is interesting. It's like I feel like we're starting
- 38:41Speaker 1: the show all over again, because like I mean, I mean,
- 38:45Speaker 1: we're not getting the you're not getting hundreds or thousands
- 38:47Speaker 1: of views or anything like that at this point.
- 38:49Speaker 2: It's a cool element we you know, haven't really done.
- 38:53Speaker 1: So you know whatever we're building, folks, we're building, like
- 38:56Speaker 1: and share this stuff. How about that?
- 38:59Speaker 2: Like the rebuilding Flyers team. We're just twelve years in
- 39:02Speaker 2: and we're still building.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Oh yeah, there, I love it. All right, We're gonna
- 39:07Speaker 1: take a break here and when we get back, we
- 39:09Speaker 1: got our interview with Kelly Hankele. Stick with us.
- 39:13Speaker 2: And now on the table.
- 39:17Speaker 1: All right, and we are back with one of our
- 39:19Speaker 1: good friends of the PSD podcast show here. And yes,
- 39:22Speaker 1: she is wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs shirt right now.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Very proudly. She is wearing that exactly as we are
- 39:30Speaker 1: about to talk about this Philadelphia Flyers team, the offseason
- 39:33Speaker 1: with the future holds for Danny Breer and company. As
- 39:37Speaker 1: some big news came out today as we are recording
- 39:39Speaker 1: this here on Wednesday, May fourteenth, we've got from Brushstreet
- 39:43Speaker 1: Hockey dot Com, Kellyhinkele, how are you great, Jeff?
- 39:46Speaker 3: How are you doing? I'm doing that date for the Flyers.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Exactly right, Tacket becoming the head coach. Who could have
- 39:53Speaker 1: seen this coming, my friend, Yeah, is.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Once again the Flyer's doing the thing that everyone in
- 40:01Speaker 3: the media describes as the Flyers thing to do, yes,
- 40:05Speaker 3: which I don't in my mind is always like a
- 40:08Speaker 3: negative like this isn't a compliment, ram Like when people
- 40:11Speaker 3: are saying that's the most Flyers thing to do, I
- 40:14Speaker 3: don't think it's necessarily a compliment, but we keep doing
- 40:17Speaker 3: it anyway.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Exactly. It's the tradition. It's a tradition, it's culture, it's
- 40:21Speaker 1: what we have come to expect from this organization. It's
- 40:24Speaker 1: just it never ceases to amaze me. I Mean, we
- 40:27Speaker 1: were going to talk about coaching towards the end of
- 40:29Speaker 1: our conversation here, but let's just get into it right
- 40:32Speaker 1: off the bat again. Talk it gonna be the next
- 40:35Speaker 1: head coach of this team and Danny Brier wanting to
- 40:41Speaker 1: sort of just solidify here with this coaching pick where
- 40:44Speaker 1: the direction of this new Flyers era is going to go. Here,
- 40:49Speaker 1: I'm trying, as we've just got the news just a
- 40:51Speaker 1: couple hours ago, Kelly, I'm trying to be objective about
- 40:55Speaker 1: this one because it's something new two, because I don't
- 40:59Speaker 1: want to just like saying about he's a former flyer.
- 41:03Speaker 1: It's the culture thing within this organization. You look at
- 41:07Speaker 1: the wins, the losses, all that with his coaching career,
- 41:11Speaker 1: and you say to yourself, Okay, maybe same old, same old.
- 41:13Speaker 1: But again, I'm trying to be objective with could this
- 41:17Speaker 1: really work for this team to start this new era here?
- 41:20Speaker 1: That is my question that I'm going to be dissecting
- 41:23Speaker 1: in my head during the course of this offseason. I
- 41:25Speaker 1: don't know, like, where are you at right now? Lenn
- 41:28Speaker 1: and I talked about it a little while ago. Where
- 41:30Speaker 1: are you at right now?
- 41:33Speaker 3: Well, so, like I mean, now that it's happened, I'm
- 41:36Speaker 3: going to try to be as optimistic as I possibly
- 41:40Speaker 3: can about it, right because, like I'm gonna be honest
- 41:43Speaker 3: with you, I the reason that I didn't want them
- 41:47Speaker 3: to hire Rick Talckett honestly doesn't have anything to do
- 41:51Speaker 3: with the fact that he used to be a flyer
- 41:53Speaker 3: and hiring old flyers as a flyers thing like that
- 41:56Speaker 3: wasn't a consideration for me.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I just.
- 42:00Speaker 3: I'm not going to pretend that I'm an expert in
- 42:03Speaker 3: what it means to be an NHL head coach. However,
- 42:06Speaker 3: all of us, every single one of us, has his
- 42:09Speaker 3: body of work that we can all look at, yes
- 42:13Speaker 3: and objectively say is this good or is it bad?
- 42:16Speaker 3: And not even is it just is it good or
- 42:18Speaker 3: is it bad? Is it the best choice? Is it
- 42:20Speaker 3: the best fix for the Flyers where they are right now?
- 42:24Speaker 1: Yes? Yes.
- 42:25Speaker 3: I said the other day on the phl Y Show
- 42:29Speaker 3: that I think that if this Flyers team was ready
- 42:32Speaker 3: to turn the corner into we're going to be a contender,
- 42:36Speaker 3: like right next year, starting next year, we're going to
- 42:39Speaker 3: be perennial playoff contenders. Were getting into it. This is
- 42:43Speaker 3: the year that we put the pedal down. We're going
- 42:45Speaker 3: to do it. Okay, maybe then, Maybe then I'm like,
- 42:47Speaker 3: all right, let's bring in Rick Talk and see what happens.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I just don't think they're not there yet. I don't
- 42:53Speaker 3: think anybody is expecting them to be an actually competitive
- 42:58Speaker 3: Cup team next season. I don't think Danny Brier is
- 43:01Speaker 3: expecting them to be that. And so for me, I
- 43:04Speaker 3: just would have liked them to bring in someone that,
- 43:10Speaker 3: in my mind, could have been more of like a
- 43:15Speaker 3: development coach rather than like someone that could grow with
- 43:20Speaker 3: the team or someone who could continue to shape what
- 43:23Speaker 3: is a pretty young team into what they're going to be.
- 43:28Speaker 1: J Woodcroft Honestly, for me, he was one of my
- 43:32Speaker 1: top guys that I was looking at and checked a
- 43:35Speaker 1: lot of the boxes I liked.
- 43:37Speaker 3: I liked him. I liked that since he got fired,
- 43:40Speaker 3: he's been kind of on this like tour to gain
- 43:45Speaker 3: as much knowledge as he possibly can. It's why he
- 43:47Speaker 3: was at the Flyers training camp last year is because
- 43:50Speaker 3: he's been going all over the place to be like,
- 43:53Speaker 3: what can I learn as a head coach to take
- 43:56Speaker 3: into my next job so that I can do better?
- 43:58Speaker 3: That is like a huge thing to me. I don't
- 44:00Speaker 3: think that you see a lot of NHL head coaches
- 44:02Speaker 3: doing this kind of like proactive training of themselves for
- 44:06Speaker 3: their next job, So that I thought was kind of cool.
- 44:08Speaker 3: I was kind of hoping for them to go with
- 44:11Speaker 3: Firschweiler and keep Shaw on as an assistant. And like
- 44:18Speaker 3: a lot of people have argued with me, like, how
- 44:20Speaker 3: can you say that you don't want Rick Tucket when
- 44:23Speaker 3: you don't eat Like, Firstwiler's never had an NHL head
- 44:25Speaker 3: coaching job, how do you know what he's going to be. Well,
- 44:27Speaker 3: first of all, I don't he can be a boat.
- 44:30Speaker 3: I have no idea. What I do know is that
- 44:32Speaker 3: he took an incredibly uncompetitive hockey program at Western Michigan.
- 44:38Speaker 3: That's not a school that you heard about, Like, it's
- 44:40Speaker 3: not BC, it's not BU, it's not North Dakota, it's
- 44:43Speaker 3: not Denver. Like, it's not a hockey school that you
- 44:46Speaker 3: heard of regularly if you you know, casually follow college hockey.
- 44:51Speaker 3: He turned that into a winning program, and every player
- 44:56Speaker 3: that played for him, including Alex Bump, said that they like.
- 45:01Speaker 3: That to me is like, Okay, this is a guy
- 45:03Speaker 3: that a knows how to coach a winning team. I'll
- 45:07Speaker 3: be it at a different level, but I don't. I'm
- 45:10Speaker 3: assuming that could translate. And also he's a guy that
- 45:13Speaker 3: knows how to communicate with players in a way that
- 45:15Speaker 3: makes them both respect him but also like him. And
- 45:20Speaker 3: I the idea that you can't like your head coach
- 45:23Speaker 3: is like a weird thing, like a debate that I've
- 45:25Speaker 3: been having with Charlie runing back and forth for a while.
- 45:27Speaker 3: But like you have to like these guys have to
- 45:29Speaker 3: like dislike the head coach. I don't know why that's
- 45:31Speaker 3: a thing, but like that's what That's what I wanted
- 45:34Speaker 3: to see. Now here's the thing. Maybe Rick Tucket has
- 45:37Speaker 3: learned lessons. Maybe Rick Tucket will be a completely different
- 45:41Speaker 3: head coach than he was in Vancouver or Arizona or whatever.
- 45:44Speaker 3: All I know is that I look at Rick Tucket's
- 45:49Speaker 3: body of work and I see, at best, a mediocre
- 45:56Speaker 3: NHL head coach. At worst, a guy that I don't know.
- 46:02Speaker 3: This year Vancouver was a disaster, and I understand that.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I understand that it was mostly that these two players, JT.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Miller and Elias Petterson hated each other. I don't know
- 46:13Speaker 3: that there's anything Rick Talky could have done to stop
- 46:15Speaker 3: these two dudes from hating each other or acting like
- 46:17Speaker 3: adults when they went to work, because apparently they couldn't
- 46:19Speaker 3: do either of those things. That said, he was the
- 46:22Speaker 3: head coach that was presiding over this team that was
- 46:26Speaker 3: an abject disaster this season, that did not live up
- 46:29Speaker 3: to expectations but had all this locker room drama. Like
- 46:33Speaker 3: at worst, he's the guy that oversaw that nonsense right.
- 46:37Speaker 3: At best, at the very best, he's a guy that
- 46:40Speaker 3: took a team that had a goaltender playing out of
- 46:43Speaker 3: his mind and that was on an absolute pdo vender.
- 46:46Speaker 3: He took them to the second round of the playoffs, Like, okay, yeah,
- 46:53Speaker 3: there's nothing if you take away his name and you
- 46:56Speaker 3: just looked at his record, there's nothing about it that
- 46:59Speaker 3: like excites you, you know what I mean, as like
- 47:01Speaker 3: a head coaching, And it just seemed like the time
- 47:04Speaker 3: that Danny Breer could do something exciting and like inspiring exactly.
- 47:12Speaker 3: And this was an extremely inside the box higher And
- 47:16Speaker 3: I understand that in hockey circles he's incredibly respected and
- 47:21Speaker 3: he was obviously going to get a head coaching job somewhere.
- 47:24Speaker 3: So I'm sure that as far as the NHL, you know,
- 47:27Speaker 3: community at large is concerned, this is a big win
- 47:29Speaker 3: for the Philadelphia Flyers. And I'm really hoping that I like,
- 47:35Speaker 3: he makes me feel stupid in six months, you know
- 47:37Speaker 3: what I mean. Like, I hope that at the end
- 47:39Speaker 3: of the day, I'm like, Wow, I was real dumb
- 47:41Speaker 3: forever doubting that Rick Hockey could do something with this team.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Yep, But I just don't know, I just yeah, he yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 3: I mean, he primarily coaches like a dump and chase style.
- 47:49Speaker 3: I don't want, Like, that's not what I want for
- 47:52Speaker 3: this team. It doesn't seem to be how modern NHL
- 47:55Speaker 3: teams win cups.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Well, that's why I'm hoping there's a change and some
- 47:59Speaker 1: sort of alteration where he has grown over these years. Yeah,
- 48:02Speaker 1: there might be. That's the hope. That is my hope
- 48:05Speaker 1: heading into this upcoming season, that it is going to
- 48:08Speaker 1: be different, that we are going to be able to
- 48:09Speaker 1: see enhance development with the talent that's here, which I
- 48:13Speaker 1: think there are certainly questions about it, but we could
- 48:17Speaker 1: certainly talk about that aspect of what the coaching is
- 48:21Speaker 1: going to be at another time too, because I also
- 48:23Speaker 1: wanted to dive into with you, Kelly, an article actually
- 48:28Speaker 1: that was put up on Broadstreet Hockey dot com by
- 48:30Speaker 1: your colleague Thomas Williams. He wrote a piece this week
- 48:33Speaker 1: about the offersheet compensation thresholds for the upcoming season here
- 48:38Speaker 1: and the Flyers have already been named as a team
- 48:41Speaker 1: that really could utilize an offer sheet this summer, especially
- 48:44Speaker 1: for a young top six center, and I wanted to
- 48:47Speaker 1: get your thoughts about what the offer sheet threshold really
- 48:51Speaker 1: means as a storyline as it pertains to this Flyers
- 48:55Speaker 1: team and how they are going to be moving forward
- 48:58Speaker 1: during the course of this offseason. I just wanted to
- 49:01Speaker 1: get your thoughts on this, so.
- 49:06Speaker 3: I would say, up until, like up until the New
- 49:13Speaker 3: York Islanders won the draft lottery. Yeah, I was very,
- 49:17Speaker 3: very very pro Danny getting out there and doing some
- 49:21Speaker 3: big balls off a sheet to get somebody in here
- 49:26Speaker 3: who could be a game breaker. Now I'm not entirely
- 49:32Speaker 3: sure I want them giving up that twenty twenty six
- 49:35Speaker 3: first under any circumstances. Okay, because even though I don't
- 49:40Speaker 3: think like they're obviously not tanking, they never have been.
- 49:44Speaker 3: I would assume they're going to address the goaltending issue,
- 49:47Speaker 3: which means that like just baseline, they should be better
- 49:51Speaker 3: than they were this season. Right that said, I don't
- 49:55Speaker 3: think it's out of the realm of possibility that they
- 49:57Speaker 3: end up as like a bottom of the lottery lottery
- 50:01Speaker 3: team like That's that wouldn't be a crazy result to me.
- 50:04Speaker 3: Like they could absolutely end up where the Islanders were
- 50:07Speaker 3: this season, and given how good Gavin McKenna is projected
- 50:13Speaker 3: to be, I just think you got a like just
- 50:16Speaker 3: in case you got to hold onto that thing. Yeah,
- 50:19Speaker 3: because even if you even if you have a one
- 50:22Speaker 3: percent chance of winning the lottery, you might just and
- 50:26Speaker 3: then your entire franchise has changed. So at this point,
- 50:32Speaker 3: I still would like to see him do something with
- 50:35Speaker 3: an offer sheet, but something on the lower end that
- 50:40Speaker 3: doesn't involve a first round pick. Like one of the
- 50:42Speaker 3: guys we've been kicking around at Broadstreet Hockey is a
- 50:46Speaker 3: Maverick Bork that plays for the Stars. Yeah, mostly because
- 50:51Speaker 3: he's like a lower end player. So like the threshold
- 50:54Speaker 3: that you're signing him at would only require you, I think,
- 50:56Speaker 3: to give up a second and a third, So no
- 50:58Speaker 3: big deal there. And Dallas is I think one of
- 51:01Speaker 3: those teams that if you target a guy with an
- 51:03Speaker 3: offer sheet, they're going to have trouble matching because they're
- 51:08Speaker 3: not going to want to overpay. Kind of like a
- 51:09Speaker 3: mid tier guy and you're absolutely going to be overpaying
- 51:13Speaker 3: him if you if you issue an offer sheet, like
- 51:15Speaker 3: that's how it works. So I if they do it,
- 51:19Speaker 3: I kind of want to see them just kind of
- 51:21Speaker 3: do what the Blues did and like going for more
- 51:24Speaker 3: of those mid tier guys, like maybe you can steal
- 51:27Speaker 3: one of them rather than going for a high end talent.
- 51:31Speaker 3: That said, like, I think the guy that everyone or
- 51:35Speaker 3: at least people that I talk to were hoping that
- 51:38Speaker 3: they would end up offer sheeting is is like a
- 51:40Speaker 3: Marco Rossi And I think you can get Marco Rossi
- 51:43Speaker 3: in a trade, yeah yeah, And if you can trade
- 51:46Speaker 3: for Marco Rossi because like even then, like if you
- 51:48Speaker 3: even if you're trading next year's first for Marco Rossi,
- 51:51Speaker 3: you can lottery protect it then like there's you know
- 51:53Speaker 3: what I mean, like you can do something with it
- 51:55Speaker 3: to ensure that you're not you know, getting yourself out
- 51:58Speaker 3: of the Gavin mckennel too early.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:02Speaker 3: And also I like the one the thing that I've
- 52:04Speaker 3: been beating on And I don't know if this would
- 52:06Speaker 3: actually happen, but in my mind it makes a lot
- 52:08Speaker 3: of sense. Is Owen Tippot for Marco Rossi? Straight up?
- 52:11Speaker 3: Bill Garon hates Marco. He's he's obviously gettable.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, And.
- 52:16Speaker 3: Bill Garran, to quote Charlie O'Connor, is a size queen.
- 52:20Speaker 3: And Owen Tippett is a big boy. He's a big
- 52:23Speaker 3: boy and he's fast, and like the ceiling on Owen
- 52:27Speaker 3: Tippet I think is pretty high. Yeah, I'm after last season.
- 52:31Speaker 3: It's not that I'm out on Owen Tippet, but at
- 52:33Speaker 3: this point he's a guy that, like if we're trading
- 52:36Speaker 3: him for something that we need, and we need high
- 52:39Speaker 3: end centers and Marcot Rossi is small, yes, but also
- 52:42Speaker 3: he's real good. Yeah, And the Flyers need really good
- 52:45Speaker 3: players before they need to be thinking about how big
- 52:48Speaker 3: they are, like they need to Yeah.
- 52:50Speaker 1: God, what a trade that would be.
- 52:51Speaker 3: I'd do that in a heartbeat, I know, right, So,
- 52:54Speaker 3: like in my mind, I'm like, you know, maybe you
- 52:55Speaker 3: can get Bill Garran on the phone, be like, you know,
- 52:58Speaker 3: Owen Tippet's large and fat. How do you like this?
- 53:01Speaker 3: They might probably be like, I love large and fast.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Let's do it.
- 53:04Speaker 3: So like I think that they could probably get Marko
- 53:06Speaker 3: Rossi in a trade, so like I would like to
- 53:08Speaker 3: see them. I do want them to be aggressive. I
- 53:11Speaker 3: no longer think I want them to be aggressive in
- 53:15Speaker 3: the offer sheet market because of that first round pick.
- 53:18Speaker 3: I kind of I want them to hold on to it.
- 53:20Speaker 1: All right, very good. Well, as we're moving along with
- 53:22Speaker 1: the conversation here, Kelly, I also I wanted to talk
- 53:25Speaker 1: about It's not the biggest deal in the world, but
- 53:28Speaker 1: the Flyers they did make officially a transaction during this
- 53:32Speaker 1: off season here by signing to a one year deal
- 53:35Speaker 1: center Rodrigo Ables for eight hundred thousand dollars. Certainly, again,
- 53:40Speaker 1: it's not the biggest trans transaction in the world, but
- 53:43Speaker 1: Danny Brier wanted to obviously have a serviceable fourth line
- 53:46Speaker 1: center in the pipeline if they needed, like they did
- 53:49Speaker 1: earlier this year. I'm wondering what are your thoughts on
- 53:52Speaker 1: this particular re signing here and what it could mean
- 53:56Speaker 1: for the team.
- 53:58Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's exactly what you said. They
- 54:00Speaker 3: wanted to have some depth at center because it's still
- 54:02Speaker 3: a problem that needs solving. Yeah, and like we don't
- 54:05Speaker 3: know yet if he's going to be able to solve
- 54:07Speaker 3: it this summer. So you know, if they can't solve
- 54:10Speaker 3: it this summer through trade or through signing a free
- 54:13Speaker 3: agent or whatever, they're probably gonna need to call up
- 54:16Speaker 3: somebody from the Fantoms at some point. And enables I
- 54:19Speaker 3: think when he was up looked pretty good. He looked
- 54:22Speaker 3: no solid, solid bottom sixth center, And at this point,
- 54:27Speaker 3: the Flyers can't have too much center depth because the
- 54:31Speaker 3: top end of the center pool is completely empty, right,
- 54:34Speaker 3: So it's just like a little insurance move for a
- 54:37Speaker 3: guy that I think did a pretty pretty good job
- 54:41Speaker 3: when he was called upon, and so it's nice that
- 54:44Speaker 3: he's being rewarded with a new contract. I like him
- 54:46Speaker 3: sticking around if he's the guy that you're calling up
- 54:50Speaker 3: every time you need somebody at center, Like, I'm not
- 54:52Speaker 3: going to be mad about it. He looked pretty good.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right. Well it is again May fourteenth
- 54:58Speaker 1: here on this Wednesday, the we are recording this. The
- 55:01Speaker 1: NHL Draft is a little over a month away at
- 55:05Speaker 1: this point, so I do want to get into some
- 55:07Speaker 1: draft talk with you too. You know, last week on
- 55:10Speaker 1: the show, my co host Eric and I we were
- 55:12Speaker 1: just talking about draft lotteries in general. Kelly just how
- 55:16Speaker 1: I was mentioning just how I can't stand him anymore,
- 55:19Speaker 1: Like I just don't think they are I really don't
- 55:21Speaker 1: care for them. They don't seem to do what they
- 55:24Speaker 1: were really intended to do in terms of tanking and
- 55:27Speaker 1: all the I'm talking NBA draft lottery as well, even
- 55:30Speaker 1: though it worked out for the Sixers this past week.
- 55:33Speaker 1: But you know, as we are looking towards this NHL
- 55:36Speaker 1: Draft and what the Flyers are going to be doing,
- 55:37Speaker 1: what Danny Breer and company are going to be doing
- 55:39Speaker 1: with that number six overall pick, and I think that's
- 55:42Speaker 1: why I was so initially upset last week. It's because
- 55:45Speaker 1: they had the technically the number four pick. They go
- 55:48Speaker 1: down to number six. Look if it's the Sixers and
- 55:50Speaker 1: the draft lottery and they move up to three, I'm
- 55:53Speaker 1: of course happy about it, but honestly, it still stinks
- 55:56Speaker 1: in other ways for other teams. If I'm being an
- 55:59Speaker 1: objective sport fan here, we still again have more than
- 56:03Speaker 1: a month before they start making this first critical selection
- 56:07Speaker 1: of this draft. What are you hoping that Danny Breer
- 56:11Speaker 1: and company does with this first pick of the draft,
- 56:14Speaker 1: because it's going to be so important, it's going to
- 56:16Speaker 1: be so critical.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Yeah. So, just like to be clear, I am not
- 56:22Speaker 3: a draft expert like you, Jeff. I have a full
- 56:25Speaker 3: time job. I do not have time to do a
- 56:28Speaker 3: whole lot of take of children playing hockey like I
- 56:31Speaker 3: just don't. So most of my opinions are based on
- 56:35Speaker 3: aggregating all of the information that I can find from
- 56:38Speaker 3: people who do have time to watch all of these people,
- 56:41Speaker 3: including our own Charlie O'Connor. Yes, at this point, based
- 56:47Speaker 3: on what I've read and what I think the Flyers need,
- 56:51Speaker 3: my hope is that James Hagen's falls to six and
- 56:54Speaker 3: they can take him, okay, he seems like a surefire
- 57:01Speaker 3: at least at least like second line guy, you know,
- 57:05Speaker 3: Like I feel like for me, it doesn't seem like
- 57:09Speaker 3: there's very many sure things after those first two guys,
- 57:13Speaker 3: after Misa and Schaeffer, all of the other guys seem
- 57:18Speaker 3: to have like a wide range of where they could
- 57:20Speaker 3: end up. Like a lot of them do have high
- 57:22Speaker 3: ceilings and if they hit, they'll be good. But then
- 57:24Speaker 3: those same guys also have like hmm, but they could
- 57:27Speaker 3: also you know, just be okay wingers whether you know,
- 57:29Speaker 3: they can maybe just be middle six guys. And and
- 57:32Speaker 3: so I for me, the I hope that the flyers
- 57:38Speaker 3: just they don't reach. I don't want them to do
- 57:43Speaker 3: what they did with Jet. I don't think that this
- 57:45Speaker 3: is the place to like go totally off board and
- 57:47Speaker 3: do something wacky and you know, pick some guy that's
- 57:50Speaker 3: projected to go twelve with the sixth overall pick like
- 57:53Speaker 3: that seems crazy. I just hope, like, however, these first
- 57:56Speaker 3: five shakeout, I just hope they take that next guy
- 58:01Speaker 3: that's supposed to be the guy, whether that's Hagan's or
- 58:04Speaker 3: Frondel or even if like martone falls that far, which
- 58:09Speaker 3: seems unlikely at this point. Like, I just want to
- 58:11Speaker 3: see them take the guy that gives them the best
- 58:15Speaker 3: possible chance to have a player that will be an
- 58:18Speaker 3: impact player. And I think James Hagen's to me, looks
- 58:22Speaker 3: like the most talented center that could probably end up
- 58:25Speaker 3: at six. That said, if he's not there, Charlie really
- 58:30Speaker 3: likes Joe O'Brien. He sounds like he's got pretty good upside,
- 58:36Speaker 3: so that's that would be fine. I just don't I
- 58:39Speaker 3: don't want the guy that seems like, again the Flyers
- 58:43Speaker 3: move to make you know, pejoratively, it's this Brady Martin
- 58:48Speaker 3: kid who's apparently just like a big boy, smash kind
- 58:51Speaker 3: of guy, and that seems to be like the biggest
- 58:54Speaker 3: fear among Flyers people that pay attention to these draft things,
- 58:59Speaker 3: that the Flyers will reach and take him with the
- 59:02Speaker 3: six overall pick, And I just don't want them to
- 59:03Speaker 3: do something like that, Like I don't think this is
- 59:05Speaker 3: the place. Like it's one thing to take a gamble
- 59:08Speaker 3: when you're picking twelve overall like they did last year.
- 59:11Speaker 3: You trade down to thirteen, you take Jet Luchenko, maybe
- 59:14Speaker 3: something happens with six. I feel like you just you
- 59:17Speaker 3: gotta go with the guy that's probably going to be good, yes,
- 59:21Speaker 3: and not reach for it. Like, if you want to
- 59:23Speaker 3: do something wacky, do something like trade a couple of
- 59:26Speaker 3: later picks to move up, do something wacky in the
- 59:28Speaker 3: you know, fourteen to fifteen range. Whatever, that's fine, right, Well,
- 59:32Speaker 3: like Charlie has been saying, I hate I'm always sealing
- 59:34Speaker 3: Charlie's thoughts, but he's very smart.
- 59:36Speaker 1: He is a smart boy.
- 59:38Speaker 3: Yeah, he's been saying, like the dream would be for
- 59:40Speaker 3: them to be able to draft someone like Hagen's or
- 59:42Speaker 3: O'Brien with six overall, because that's kind of like a
- 59:45Speaker 3: as close to a sure thing as you're going to get, right,
- 59:48Speaker 3: and then maybe a guy like McQueen falls to thirteen
- 59:53Speaker 3: fourteen because of the back issue and maybe you can
- 59:56Speaker 3: trade up, and like that's a giant chance that you're taking,
- 59:59Speaker 3: but it's a giant with like a huge upside if
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: it works out for you. Yeah, like that kind of
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: thing I would be okay with. It's not that I'm
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: against them taking swings. I just don't think you take
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: a big swing with six.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: You gotta be you gotta get something. Yes, that's thet
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: they just do that.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Yes, that's the point. You have to get something for
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: the future here, like I get trying to take a
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: swing and if you miss, it's a big, big miss
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: at this critical juncture where this team is at in
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: terms of the restructuring. I'm tired of using the word rebuild,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: but just the restructuring of where this team needs to go.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: So uh, before I let you go, Kelly, I do
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: want to talk about, you know, the draft in terms
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: of the overall theme. And interestingly enough, this flyer shirt
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: that I'm wearing right here, believe it or not, the
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: story behind this. I got this at the broad Street
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Hockey Party when Nolan Patrick was drafted, when.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: The Cursed Draft, the Cursed Draft.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Party, and it was the first time we all met
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: each other. And I think Bill Mattz actually threw me
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: this shirt for some rea amazing. I think he actually
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: just threw it at me here, Jeff, and I don't know.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: I think I think that's what happened. Long story short,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: but I want to get into this draft from an
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: overall perspective again, because it is such an important time
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: in this Flyers era, this new era of this team
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: really trying to turn the corner here. When it's all
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: said and done, Kelly, what are you hoping the theme
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: of this Flyer's draft is going to be, say, like
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: the day after the draft or that week after the
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: draft when we're all dissecting these picks. What are you
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: hoping the theme will inevitably be.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Well, since you mentioned it before I get into it,
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: there will be another ninth annual Broschiet Hockey Draft party
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: h with our friends at PHLI. Details are going to
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: be coming out in the next week or so. Probably
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: better not be.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: On vacation with my family again well twenty seventh. Yeah, yes, oh, I.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: Know it is kind of prime vacation time, so I
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: get it. But there will be another Broughcher Hockey Draft party.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: So if you are listening and you want to come
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: to that, just check out our socials on the PHL.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: So they are fun, folks. I've been to a few.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: They are fun. So again, it's fun.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: It's fun being in a room with a bunch of
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Flyers fans when the Flyers are doing stuff, you know
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: what I mean. It's way better than watching on your
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: couch absolutely. Any anyway, I'm kind of hoping. I'm kind
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: of hoping that just we get out of this draft
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: and like collectively as a fan base, we're feeling like
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: good and and whether that means good about the picks
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: that were made or if they make trades at the draft,
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: we're happy about those. I just think that, like this
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: talkic decision is the first one that Danny Breyers had
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: to make that has that's definitely like a split opinion
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: on like, like, you know, there hasn't really been a
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: lot that he's had to do that I think have
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: been like objectively like you can't look at it be bad,
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: Like you can't look at the Meach Cough pick and
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: be like that was terrible idea, Like that was just
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: objectively good. Like nothing that he's done so far has
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: been polarizing in any way.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Right, even the trades earlier, Like the trades were not
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: as polarizing.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: No, I think, you know, like some people really liked
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: Frost and Ferrabye. They seem to be very popular among
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: like younger fans, which is cool. So I know a
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: lot of people were upset, but I think a lot
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: of people but but but I don't think anyone looked
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: at them or were like, whoh, terrible idea. You're really
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: gonna regret that, you know what I mean? Like they
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: were they were moves that probably had to be made.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: Freeing up the cap space was good, and I don't
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: think either one of those players is going to turn
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: out to be good enough that we're going to like
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: really regret it at the end of the day. This
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: talkic move, though, was the first one where people are
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: I think genuinely like some people really love it and
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: some people really really hate it. And so I think
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: we're heading into this draft for the first time with
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: Danny Brier's kind of like the opinion on him being
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: a little bit up in the air as far as
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: general managers go, because he hasn't given us a reason
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: and yet to not like what he's been doing. So
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: I just hope that we come out of this draft
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: without thinking like, really blew that, or Wow, can't believe
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: they did that, or Wow, that looks really stupid, Like
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: just like I want to, I want to head into
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: this offseason feeling like positive and optimistic, and I think
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: if they're able to, like obviously no one knows if
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: you nailed the draft pick for like five years, Like
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: people pretend like people can pretend that they know with
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: certainty that zeb Buham is going to be better than Jeluchenko.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Nobody does. I don't know, you don't know. Nobody knows.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: We're not going to know for like three or four
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: years if that was a giant miss or not so far. Honestly,
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: it's looking kind of even in my opinion, but anyway,
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: so we're not really gonna know. But but there's gonna
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: be like a vibe, you know what I mean, Like
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: if they end up taking James Hagen's I think the
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: overall the vibe is gonna be like cool, definitely got
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: a guy that's going to help the team if they
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: do so, I'm done like reach on Brady Martin because
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: he's a big Flyers guy. I think a lot of
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: people are gonna be like, ooh, I.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Don't know, toilet memes thing.
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just one of those things where then you're
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: gonna start having people like for so long. For so long,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: the vibes have been so negative around this team. I know,
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: since Danny Breers come on, for the most part, they've
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: been pretty positive. And I would just like to see
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: that continue, because it's a lot more fun when people
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: are not miserable about hockey.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Absolutely, and so.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: I'm just hoping that whatever trays are made, whatever picks
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: are made, there's no one that can look at them
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: and objectively be like this sucks. And I think they
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: can very easily come out of this without anybody thinking
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: that it sucked. And so like that's like it's very
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: low bar. That's really all I need from them. It's
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: just don't don't mess it.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Up, exactly, don't screw it up, Danny, come on, don't
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: screw it up. Great way to end this discussion. She
