Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 19th.
- 0:11Words that matter. Has a rumor ever gotten back to
- 0:16you? Something that someone said
- 0:18about you that spread through your friend group before you
- 0:20even knew what was happening? There's something about gossip
- 0:24that moves faster than almost anything else.
- 0:27Proverbs chapter 18, verse 8 nails it.
- 0:30The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels.
- 0:33They go down into the inner parts of the body.
- 0:36Gossip is appealing. It feels like it tastes good in
- 0:39the moment, but it goes deep, it sticks, and it does real damage
- 0:44to the person being talked about and honestly to the person doing
- 0:47the talking. David found himself in a
- 0:50situation in First Samuel, chapter 21, where people were
- 0:54suspicious and afraid of him. He was alone, out of context,
- 0:58and being watched. Aheimlec, the priest, trembled
- 1:01when he saw him. Why are you alone and no one
- 1:04with you? Fear and uncertainty surrounded
- 1:07David. He was walking through one of
- 1:09the most vulnerable seasons of his life, fleeing, hiding,
- 1:13unsure of who he could trust. And in those moments, Psalm 34,
- 1:18verse 4 became his anchor. I sought the Lord, and He
- 1:21answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
- 1:24And Psalm 56 verse 3 echoes it. When I am afraid, I put my trust
- 1:29in God, not in public opinion, not in his own strength or
- 1:34reputation, not in who was talking about him or what rumors
- 1:38were circulating in God. That's such a clear path forward
- 1:43for all of us in a world where words, especially online, can
- 1:47spread so fast and cut so deep. When people are whispering, when
- 1:51fear starts creeping in, when the pressure of what others
- 1:54think becomes overwhelming, the response that actually works is
- 1:58to run toward God, not to keep up with the noise.
- 2:03Proverbs also says in verse 9 that slacking in your work makes
- 2:07you a brother to destruction. Half hearted effort and careless
- 2:10living invite their own kind of chaos.
- 2:13How you work, how you speak, and where you place your trust.
- 2:16These things are all connected. Choose diligence.
- 2:20Choose life giving words. Choose trust in God over trust
- 2:24in your own management of what people think.
- 2:27Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 2:31being our refuge. When fear and gossip surround
- 2:34us, help us to speak words that build rather than whisper.
- 2:37Words that break. When fear creeps in about our
- 2:40reputation, our relationships, our future.
- 2:43Remind us of David's prayer. I sought you and you answered
- 2:47me. We put our trust in you.
- 2:49Deliver us from fear and teach us to live with courage and
- 2:53integrity. In Jesus name, Amen.

- 3:54Proverbs, chapter 18, verses 8 to 9.
- 3:57World English Bible. The words of a gossip are like
- 4:00dainty morsels. They go down into a person's
- 4:03innermost parts. One who is slack in his work is
- 4:06brother to him who is a master of destruction.
- 4:09First Samuel. Chapter 21.
- 4:12World English Bible. Then David came to Knob to
- 4:15Aheimletch the priest. Aheimletch came to meet David
- 4:19trembling, and said to him, Why are you alone, and no man with
- 4:22you? David said to Aheimletch the
- 4:25priest. The king has commanded me to do
- 4:27something and has said to me, let no one know anything about
- 4:31the business about which I send you and what I have commanded
- 4:34you. I have sent the young men to a
- 4:37certain place. Now therefore what is under your
- 4:40hand, please give me 5 loaves of bread in my hand or whatever is
- 4:44available. The priest answered David and
- 4:47said, I have no common bread, but there is holy bread, if only
- 4:52the young men have kept themselves from women.
- 4:55David answered the priest and said to him, Truly, women have
- 4:59been kept from us as usual these three days.
- 5:02When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though
- 5:05it was only a common journey. How much more than today shall
- 5:09their vessels be holy? So the priest gave him holy
- 5:13bread, for there was no bread there, but the show bread that
- 5:16was taken from before Yahweh to put hot bread in the day when it
- 5:20was taken away. Now a certain man of the
- 5:23servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Yahweh, and
- 5:27his name was Doge the Edomite, the best of the herdsmen who
- 5:31belonged to Saul. David said to Ahem, Lech, isn't
- 5:35there here under your hand, spear or sword?
- 5:38For I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me,
- 5:41because the King's business required haste.
- 5:44The priest said, Behold, the sword of Goliath, the Philistine
- 5:48whom you killed in the valley of Allah is here wrapped in a cloth
- 5:52behind the ephod. If you would like to take that,
- 5:55take it, for there is no other except that here David said,
- 5:59there is none like that, give it to me.
- 6:02David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to
- 6:06Achish the king of Gath. The servants of Achish said to
- 6:09him, Isn't this David, the king of the land?
- 6:13Didn't they sing to one another about him, and dances, saying,
- 6:16Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
- 6:20David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of a
- 6:24Chish, the king of Gath. He changed his behavior before
- 6:28them and pretended to be insane in their hands, and scribbled on
- 6:32the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his
- 6:35beard. Then a Chish said to his
- 6:38servants, Look, you see the man is insane.
- 6:41Why then have you brought him to me?
- 6:43Do I lack Mad Men that you have brought this fellow to play the
- 6:46madman in my presence? Should this fellow come into my
- 6:49house? Psalm chapter 34.
- 6:52World English Bible. I will bless Yahweh at all
- 6:54times. His praise will always be in my
- 6:57mouth. My soul shall boast in Yahweh.
- 7:00The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
- 7:03O magnify Yahweh with me, Let's exalt His name together.
- 7:07I sought Yahweh and He answered me and delivered me from all my
- 7:10fears. They look to Him and were
- 7:13radiant. Their faces shall never be
- 7:15covered with shame. This poor man cried, and Yahweh
- 7:19heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.
- 7:22Yahweh's Angel encamps around those who fear Him and delivers
- 7:26them. Oh, taste and see that Yahweh is
- 7:28good. Blessed is the man who takes
- 7:31refuge in him. O fear Yahweh, you his Saints,
- 7:35for there is no lack with those who fear Him.
- 7:37The Young Lions do lack and suffer hunger, but those who
- 7:40seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.
- 7:44Come you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of
- 7:47Yahweh, who is someone who desires life and loves many
- 7:50days, that he may see good. Keep your tongue from evil and
- 7:54your lips from speaking lies. Depart from evil and do good.
- 7:58Seek peace and pursue it. Yahweh's eyes are toward the
- 8:02righteous. His ears listen to their cry.
- 8:05Yahweh's face is against those who do evil to cut off their
- 8:09memory from the earth. The righteous cry and Yahweh
- 8:12hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
- 8:16Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart and saves those
- 8:19who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the
- 8:23righteous, but Yahweh delivers Him out of them all.
- 8:26He protects all of His bones. Not one of them is broken.
- 8:30Evil shall kill the wicked. Those who hate the righteous
- 8:33shall be condemned. Yahweh redeems the soul of His
- 8:36servants. None of those who take refuge in
- 8:39Him shall be condemned. Psalm chapter 56.
- 8:42World English Bible. Be merciful to me God, for man
- 8:46wants to swallow me up all day long.
- 8:48He attacks and oppresses me. My enemies want to swallow me up
- 8:53all day long, for they are many who fight proudly against me.
- 8:57When I am afraid. I will put my trust in you.
- 8:59In God I praise his word. In God I put my trust.
- 9:04I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?
- 9:07All day long they twist my words.
- 9:09All their thoughts are against me.
- 9:10For evil they conspire and lurk. Watching my steps, they are
- 9:14eager to take my life. Shall they escape by iniquity?
- 9:18In anger cast down the people's God?
- 9:21You count my wanderings, You put my tears into your container.
- 9:24Aren't they in your book? Then my enemies shall turn back
- 9:28in the day that I call. I know this, that God is for me.
- 9:32In God I will praise His word. In Yahweh I will praise His
- 9:35word. I have put my trust in God.
- 9:38I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
- 9:41Your vows are on me, God. I will give thank offerings to
- 9:44you, for you have delivered my soul from death and prevented my
- 9:49feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of
- 9:52the living. Thanks for joining us on Bible
