- 0:00Hey y'all, welcome back to In the Stillness.
- 0:03This is friendly. Happy Thursday everyone.
- 0:06I'm super excited for today's episode.
- 0:09We are starting the last chapter of First John chapter 5, and
- 0:15this portion of scripture is honestly so foundational to our
- 0:18faith. Your eternity, your salvation,
- 0:23ultimately your destiny, all hinges on what you believe about
- 0:28Jesus Christ. Not just believing that he
- 0:31existed, not just believing that he was a good teacher or some
- 0:37good prophet and moral example, but believing that Jesus is the
- 0:42Christ, the Messiah, the Savior of the world, the Son of God.
- 0:48And I think it's so important to address because a lot of people
- 0:52today, even entire religions, will acknowledge Jesus to a
- 0:57certain extent, but they stopped short of surrendering to him as
- 1:02their Lord and Savior. Some say that he is a Son of
- 1:06God, but not the Son of God. Some say that he was a wise and
- 1:13compassionate person. But scripture is so clear about
- 1:18who Jesus Christ is. So let's go ahead and dive into
- 1:22first John chapter 5. Today we're going to be reading
- 1:25through verses 1 to 5. Everyone who believes that Jesus
- 1:31is the Messiah is God's spiritual child and has been
- 1:35fathered by God himself. And everyone who loves Father
- 1:40God loves his children as well. This is how we can be sure that
- 1:46we love the children of God, by having a passionate love for God
- 1:52and by obedience to His commands.
- 1:55True love for God means obeying His commands, and His commands
- 2:01don't weigh us down as heavy burdens.
- 2:04You see, every child of God overcomes the world, for our
- 2:09faith is the victorious power that triumphs over the world.
- 2:15So who are the world conquerors defeating its power?
- 2:19Those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
- 2:25OK, I love this so much because John does not waste time in his
- 2:31writing. He immediately connects belief
- 2:34with love, obedience, and with victory.
- 2:39Your faith, it matters eternally.
- 2:42Romans 10 says we are saved by confessing Jesus as Lord and
- 2:47believing in our hearts that God raised him from the dead.
- 2:52In First Corinthians one Paul talks about Christ being a
- 2:55stumbling block to many people because ultimately the world it
- 3:00craves spirituality but not always surrender.
- 3:05They want the inspiration without true repentance.
- 3:09They want a savior that fits their preferences and what they
- 3:13expect instead of the actual Jesus that is revealed in
- 3:17scripture. But Jesus does not leave room
- 3:21for neutrality. Guys.
- 3:23He is either Lord of your life or he is not.
- 3:28And this truth should make us both bold and compassionate.
- 3:33Bold because we don't have to water down the gospel.
- 3:37It is clear cut what it is. But also compassionate, because
- 3:43people are genuinely spiritually lost without Jesus.
- 3:47There are so many people desperate for the truth.
- 3:51The gospel divides because truth divides.
- 3:56Light exposes the darkness. And to those receiving Jesus,
- 4:01the gospel is good news. It brings life.
- 4:05But to those who are choosing to reject him, it confronts their
- 4:10very thing that they're holding onto apart from God.
- 4:15So maybe a thing to reflect on here is, do I genuinely believe
- 4:20Jesus is who he says he is? Not just intellectually, not
- 4:25just head knowledge, but heart knowledge with my entire life.
- 4:32Genuine belief changes you. And John then moves into
- 4:37something really convicting. If we love God, we will love His
- 4:42children. So how we treat fellow believers
- 4:47in the faith, it reflects something deeper about how we
- 4:51feel towards God and about our relationship with Him.
- 4:57I want us to think about these things honestly.
- 5:00How do you speak about your fellow brothers and sisters in
- 5:03Christ? Are your combos full of life and
- 5:07encouragement? Or more, with degrading comments
- 5:12or gossip. How do you think about them?
- 5:16Are you harvesting bitterness in your heart?
- 5:19Being overly competitive? Are you constantly jealous or
- 5:23envious? I want to pause here because
- 5:28envious so dangerous. Not only because it leads to
- 5:32comparison, and comparison really is the thief of all joy
- 5:36and peace, but also because it places pressure on another
- 5:42person to be someone that they were never meant to be for you.
- 5:47God created each person uniquely and in His own image, so you
- 5:53don't need to become someone else to feel valuable, and they
- 5:58don't need to shrink for you to feel secure.
- 6:03Also, how are you acting toward believers?
- 6:07Are you serving them actively? Are you praying for them?
- 6:11Celebrating them? Showing up for them?
- 6:15A good reflection question that I'm also thinking about is do
- 6:19the people around me feel loved by God through the way that I
- 6:23treat them on the day-to-day? Love is not just a feeling, it
- 6:30is visible through our actions. Scripture says that faith
- 6:35expresses itself through love. And then John says something
- 6:41huge. True love for God means obeying
- 6:44His commands. The root of love is obedience.
- 6:52Think of a plant as an example. Obedience is not just some
- 6:56random branch attached to Christianity.
- 7:01It's not a surplus. It is the root system.
- 7:04Everything else grows from there.
- 7:08And I say this knowing that obedience is not always the
- 7:12easiest option. Sometimes obedience looks like
- 7:15staying in and spending quality time reading the Word of God or
- 7:21going to a worship night, being around Christian community
- 7:25instead of going out and just getting drunk at a bar.
- 7:28Sometimes obedience looks like denying your flesh's desires and
- 7:34pursuing holiness and purity over instant pleasure.
- 7:39Sometimes obedience looks like discernment over distraction or
- 7:44forgiving someone. When everything in you is
- 7:47craving revenge, oftentimes it's in the smallest daily decisions.
- 7:54What music you're listening to, what you're watching TV shows,
- 7:58movies, how you are spending your money, even what you choose
- 8:03to eat and how you steward your body.
- 8:06Colossians 3 verse 23 says whatever you do, work at it with
- 8:11all your heart as working for the Lord.
- 8:16Everything becomes worship when it is surrendered to Him.
- 8:20And I think one of the healthiest questions that we can
- 8:24regularly ask ourselves is this. What is most glorifying to God
- 8:29in this moment? Not what is most comfortable,
- 8:34not what gets approval from people or makes you feel good,
- 8:39but what glorifies God most. Here is the beautiful part to
- 8:44this question. God does not ask us to obey Him
- 8:48without empowering us to do it. John quite literally says that
- 8:53His commands are not burdensome. Why?
- 8:57Because God gives us the Holy Spirit, which gives us the power
- 9:03to obey. In obedience.
- 9:05It then transitions from a duty to our delight.
- 9:11Psalm 37 four says delight yourself in the Lord and He will
- 9:15give you the desires of your heart.
- 9:18I think most of us have probably heard this verse, and this is
- 9:23not because God is some genie just handing out every worldly
- 9:28craving that we have, but it's because when you truly delight
- 9:33yourself in Him, your desires become aligned with His desires.
- 9:38He transforms your heart and with that what you want.
- 9:43I've honestly been reflecting on this a lot lately.
- 9:47God is such an abundant giver. He does not just barely provide
- 9:52enough. Ephesians 3 verse 20 says He
- 9:56does immeasurably more than all we ask or can even imagine.
- 10:01God delights in blessing His children, and it's not always in
- 10:07the timing that we expect. It can stretch us to wait on His
- 10:10blessings, but it is always in the timing that is best because
- 10:16He knows when we are ripe for the blessing, when we are
- 10:19prepared enough to receive the fullness of what He wants to
- 10:23give. And every time that you leave
- 10:28behind something unhealthy, simple, distracting, or
- 10:32something that is simply less than God's best because of
- 10:36obedience to Christ, you are not losing.
- 10:41You are making room for something that is far better,
- 10:44far more rewarding, Whether it is a relationship, a habit, a
- 10:49lifestyle, maybe it is a mindset.
- 10:52Whatever it is, God honors obedience because He is good, He
- 10:58is perfect. And I just imagine the Father's
- 11:03heart when He sees His child, choosing him, the better
- 11:07portion, choosing worship, purity, patience, choosing
- 11:13surrender. It's not because he's
- 11:16controlling us, but because He knows where life is found.
- 11:21Righteous living produces peace, joy, love, all the fruits of the
- 11:27Spirit. Life is still going to have its
- 11:31hardships. Obviously, following Jesus does
- 11:34not mean that life just becomes easy.
- 11:37But it does become simpler when you're living for an audience of
- 11:41one because you get to stop performing for yourself or for
- 11:46other people. You stop chasing constant
- 11:49validation and exhausting yourself trying to prove your
- 11:52worth because God already approves of you in Christ Jesus.
- 11:58He already loves you so deeply. You are already accepted.
- 12:03And then John ends with this incredible truth that every
- 12:07child of God overcomes the world overcomer becomes synonymous to
- 12:16your identity as a son or daughter of Christ.
- 12:19It is not just a goal that you're striving towards someday.
- 12:23It is who you are now as a believer.
- 12:26You are a conqueror. You are a victor.
- 12:30You are a triumphur, a child of God, so you do not have to climb
- 12:36a ladder to earn your victory. Jesus already won it at the
- 12:40cross, and it's now that you live from victory, not for
- 12:45victory. So my charge for y'all is own
- 12:49that identity. Live with it out of a humble
- 12:52heart posture, but with confidence.
- 12:56Walk in faith today. Walk in obedience, walk in joy,
- 13:01because you belong to Jesus and that should change everything in
- 13:06your life. Let's go ahead and pray.
- 13:11Jesus, thank you. Thank you that you are the true
- 13:16Messiah, the Son of God. You are our Savior who brought
- 13:22us from death to life. You have rescued us from the
- 13:27grave. Thank You that it is through
- 13:30faith in You alone that we become children of God and
- 13:34overcomers. I pray that you would help us to
- 13:38walk in genuine love. May we have joyful obedience.
- 13:44Give us a deeper surrender to your will, to your plans, to
- 13:48your timing. I pray that we would desire what
- 13:52glorifies You most and that we would trust that Your plans are
- 13:56always better than our own. Would you fill us with courage
- 14:01to live boldly for you and to love others well?
- 14:05We love you so much. Jesus.
- 14:08We praise you, we thank you. May we honor you with our lives.
- 14:13In your precious name we pray. Amen.
- 14:17OK guys, that was a little longer than I was planning, but
- 14:21there were so many good things to unpack and I really love this
- 14:24quiet time with the Lord. So I hope that it blesses y'all
- 14:27as well. And I will see y'all on the next
- 14:30podcast episode.
