Transcript
- Lucas: Willkommen zurück zu Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode one hundred fifty three. Can you believe it, Lucas? Lucas: I know. And we're still at the gym. But today is a very practical topic. Something you'll definitely need. Luna: Oh, I think I know. Is it asking for a towel? Because after a workout, I'm always dripping. Lucas: Exactly. Today's phrases all revolve around getting a towel. Let's start with the most basic one. Lucas: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. I need a towel. Say it with me: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. That's pretty straightforward. Ich brauche = I need, ein Handtuch = a towel. Lucas: Right. Listen again: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Your turn. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Okay, I got that. Lucas: Now, if you're wondering where the towels are, you ask: Wo sind die Handtücher? Where are the towels? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? That's the plural, right? Handtücher instead of Handtuch. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Good. So if I'm at the front desk, I can say that. Lucas: Yep. Or you can be more polite and ask: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Do you have a towel for me? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? That sounds really useful. Haben Sie = do you have, ein Handtuch für mich = a towel for me. Lucas: You got it. Repeat after me: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: And if someone points you in the right direction, they might say: Die Handtücher sind dort. The towels are over there. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. So 'dort' means 'over there'. Good to know. Lucas: Exactly. Now imagine this: you walk up to the gym receptionist and say 'Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich?' What do you think they'll say? Luna: Probably 'Ja, natürlich' or 'Die Handtücher sind dort.' Or maybe they hand you one! Let's practice that scenario. Lucas: Okay. I'll be the receptionist. You ask me for a towel. Luna: Hallo, haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Ja, die Handtücher sind dort. And you could reply: Danke! Or you could say: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Can I have a towel? Luna: Oh, that's another one. Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Let me try that: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Lucas: Perfect. That's a very direct but polite way. You've got all five phrases now. Luna: Let's review them quickly. Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Lucas: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Excellent. You're ready for the gym towel counter. Luna: You know, Lucas, I realize this is really practical. And honestly, if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with German, it's worth supporting. If today's episode was helpful, you can show it at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: Yeah, that's right. It helps us keep making these episodes. Now, back to towels. What if the towels are not there? Luna: Oh, then I'd say 'Wo sind die Handtücher?' again, maybe a bit louder. Lucas: Or you could ask 'Haben Sie ein Handtuch?' without 'für mich'. It's a little shorter. Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch? I like that. Let's practice all five one more time. I'll do the first: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Lucas: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Great job, everyone. Practice these, and next time you're at the gym, you'll be all set. Luna: Bis zum nächsten Mal! Lucas: Tschüss!
