- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to you pick up and deliver it the podcast
- 0:05Speaker 1: where I pick up my audio recorder as I step
- 0:07Speaker 1: off the train and deliver an episode two while I
- 0:10Speaker 1: walk home. I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:20Speaker 2: A Greetings listener.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's a lovely day here in suburban Chicago. I would
- 0:24Speaker 1: put the temperature at high forties, maybe low fifties, right
- 0:31Speaker 1: in that butter zone where maybe you want to wear
- 0:34Speaker 1: a hat, but when the sun's out you probably don't
- 0:37Speaker 1: want to wear a hat. It's a good spot to be.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It's nice weather. It's a little chillier than one expects
- 0:42Speaker 1: for mid April, but it's.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Early April, so okay.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Well, I had a lovely weekend for a number of reasons.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We got a couple lifers when we went out birding.
- 0:54Speaker 1: If you're not a birder, a lifer is a bird
- 0:56Speaker 1: that you've never seen before. We saw a red throated
- 0:59Speaker 1: loon last Saturday, and we saw a Louisiana water thrush
- 1:05Speaker 1: on Sunday. Two new birds for us, very exciting, more
- 1:11Speaker 1: apropos for this podcast. I got a bunch of new
- 1:14Speaker 1: games too. That's because this weekend was also the semi
- 1:19Speaker 1: annual meeting twice a year Chicago No Ship Math Trade.
- 1:24Speaker 1: The Chicago No Ship Math Trade is organized by Mark,
- 1:27Speaker 1: who is Panderu Express on Board game Geek. Thank you Mark,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and it uses the standard math trade application, the online
- 1:39Speaker 1: wish list generator, and it takes about a month. You
- 1:44Speaker 1: submit a bunch of games, you do a bunch of trades,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and then you go to the library and in Chinatown
- 1:52Speaker 1: and you trade games with people. They also do this thing.
- 1:55Speaker 2: They do the.
- 1:57Speaker 1: What do they call it the trade auction where they
- 2:02Speaker 1: have the option to put games that were in the
- 2:06Speaker 1: or that you can put games into a very short
- 2:11Speaker 1: board game geek auction and then bring those games to
- 2:14Speaker 1: the trade as well. So I generally let myself spend
- 2:17Speaker 1: bid up to twenty dollars on that auction as well,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and then I sell games in it. So this time
- 2:24Speaker 1: I sold eleven. I spent about twenty dollars and I
- 2:29Speaker 1: sold about eleven dollars, so I ended up paying nine
- 2:31Speaker 1: dollars for the auction plus the cost of parking, which
- 2:35Speaker 1: was like twenty bucks. So that is the process. So
- 2:40Speaker 1: let's talk about the games. I will start with the
- 2:43Speaker 1: games I got rid of, and what I'm gonna do
- 2:45Speaker 1: is just buzz through the games I got rid of,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and I'm gonna talk a little bit about maybe I
- 2:49Speaker 1: say one special thing about them, and then why I
- 2:51Speaker 1: gave them up, and then I will talk about the
- 2:54Speaker 1: games that I got and why I was interested in them.
- 2:58Speaker 1: So start with Rolling Realms. This is Jamie Stigmayer's Roll
- 3:05Speaker 1: and Right game. The neat thing about it is it's
- 3:08Speaker 1: got a whole bunch of different cards that are themed
- 3:10Speaker 1: around the stone Meyer Games games, so it's kind of
- 3:15Speaker 1: a meta game.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And he has continued to release.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Rolling Realms promo packs for each different game that comes out,
- 3:23Speaker 1: so you could have a massive collection.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I thought this was pretty.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Fun, but we played it like twice and then there's
- 3:30Speaker 1: been not much clamor or interest in continuing to play it.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I thought it was fine, but I didn't think it
- 3:36Speaker 1: was substantially better than stuff like Silver and Gold, and
- 3:39Speaker 1: ultimately the novelty of the different game packs was not
- 3:45Speaker 1: enough to keep me into it. So Rolling Realms traded
- 3:49Speaker 1: nextcept I have Android Infiltration. This is a fun little
- 3:53Speaker 1: push your luck game where you are trying to make
- 3:56Speaker 1: your way up a series of cards each room in
- 4:00Speaker 1: Fantasy flight style. Oh this is from Donald Ax Vakrino
- 4:03Speaker 1: in Fantasy Flight style. Each room has its own little
- 4:06Speaker 1: special powers which make.
- 4:08Speaker 2: For interesting play.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It's set in the Android the ne Android Netrunner universe,
- 4:15Speaker 1: So you are or in the Android universe, I guess.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So you are a team of ne'er do wells breaking
- 4:21Speaker 1: into a corporate structure to steal secrets, but you're all
- 4:27Speaker 1: kind of in it for your own nefarious goods or
- 4:32Speaker 1: nefarious purposes, so you break in together, but then you're
- 4:34Speaker 1: all kind of each person for themselves.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I like this game. I thought the.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Mechanism of climbing your way up the different floors was
- 4:43Speaker 1: pretty neat, and the way that the different players interacted
- 4:47Speaker 1: worked really well. But it was very complicated. It was
- 4:51Speaker 1: hard to explain quickly and hard to keep in mind,
- 4:55Speaker 1: so like I learned it. I played it, and then
- 4:57Speaker 1: when I would go back, I'd have to like relearn
- 4:59Speaker 1: the whole thing significantly, so it didn't stay in the
- 5:01Speaker 1: collection as much as I liked the theme, that's Android infiltration,
- 5:06Speaker 1: except you have bees. This is a real time flower
- 5:11Speaker 1: game where you are bees pollinating flowers. I played it once.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I thought it was fun, but nothing special. It sat
- 5:18Speaker 1: on my shelf for two years and ready to go, so.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Sky Team.
- 5:24Speaker 1: This one was one of the ones I put in
- 5:27Speaker 1: the trade thinking I would be able to get something
- 5:29Speaker 1: good for it, and it worked. It was a higher
- 5:31Speaker 1: value trade. I liked this game. I thought it was interesting,
- 5:36Speaker 1: but it is only a two player game, and I
- 5:39Speaker 1: only I almost only play two player games with my wife,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and she does not want to play a game about
- 5:45Speaker 1: flying a plane. She doesn't like flying very much, and
- 5:48Speaker 1: so a game about trying not to crash is absolutely
- 5:51Speaker 1: not her favorite thing. I did play it with another
- 5:55Speaker 1: person I usually played two player games with, and they
- 5:57Speaker 1: didn't really like it either. So even though I thought
- 5:59Speaker 1: it was really interesting, I'm not going to keep a
- 6:01Speaker 1: game that I'm never gonna get to play, so, especially
- 6:04Speaker 1: if it's got trade value. So that's one of the
- 6:06Speaker 1: interesting things like games that I if I think it's
- 6:09Speaker 1: really good but I'm not able to play it much,
- 6:12Speaker 1: sometimes it'll go on to the trade pile because I
- 6:14Speaker 1: think I can get something interesting in exchange, and maybe
- 6:17Speaker 1: the thing that I get will be something I can
- 6:20Speaker 1: play more. So that's kind of the logic that I'm
- 6:23Speaker 1: using as I go into these trades. Next up, we
- 6:25Speaker 1: have a game of Thrones second Edition. This is a
- 6:28Speaker 1: game that I had got. I got a copy of
- 6:30Speaker 1: a Game of Thrones from a friend and I donated
- 6:34Speaker 1: that to my college board game club because I found
- 6:37Speaker 1: another copy at Goodwill.
- 6:39Speaker 2: The copy I found a Goodwill.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Was in very good condition, so I kept the one
- 6:42Speaker 1: that was in very good condition, gave the one that
- 6:44Speaker 1: was in okay condition to my board game.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Club at school, and then it sat there for like
- 6:49Speaker 2: a year.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I haven't played it because that's a big event game,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and on the rare chance that I get to play
- 6:55Speaker 1: a big event game of Game of Thrones, it's usually
- 6:57Speaker 1: gonna be with Rob or other friends from Toggle, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: there are multiple copies available in that group, including Rob's copy,
- 7:04Speaker 1: which is decked out with cool bits. Andy has the expansion.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So I don't really need a Game of Thrones, so
- 7:11Speaker 1: I was happy to put it in the trade and
- 7:12Speaker 1: I got something good for it. Next up is Cathedral.
- 7:16Speaker 1: This is a really.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Interesting wooden abstract game. I like it.
- 7:19Speaker 1: There's just not much space for wooden abstract games and
- 7:22Speaker 1: my collection again, two player games. If a game is
- 7:26Speaker 1: primarily a two player game, that's got to be a
- 7:28Speaker 1: game that my wife is going to want to play,
- 7:30Speaker 1: or I have to really really like it for it
- 7:32Speaker 1: to stay in the collection, and Cathedral did not fit
- 7:34Speaker 1: either of those categories. It is a lovely wooden game, though,
- 7:37Speaker 1: so I was happy to pass it on to someone
- 7:39Speaker 1: who would play it. Furnace is a game that I
- 7:43Speaker 1: really liked at the time that I got it. It's
- 7:46Speaker 1: one of the games I played at gen Con and
- 7:47Speaker 1: immediately bought it because I loved the way it treated auctions.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think it's a really clever mechanism. You're bidding on cards,
- 7:53Speaker 1: and if you win the card, you get the top
- 7:55Speaker 1: of the top of the thing, and if you don't
- 7:58Speaker 1: win the card, you get the resources of bottom. There's
- 8:01Speaker 1: a similar mechanism using trick taking in Brian Boru, which
- 8:05Speaker 1: is probably why I like Brian Boru, and I just
- 8:07Speaker 1: realized that that parallel was there. The theme of Furnace
- 8:12Speaker 1: is really boring though you're trading resources. It's neoze, and
- 8:19Speaker 1: so I did not play Furnace very often. It did
- 8:23Speaker 1: not have much attraction for the people I play games with.
- 8:26Speaker 1: It sat unplayed, even though I admire it, So let's
- 8:29Speaker 1: move it on. Next up isaf Leaf is a really
- 8:32Speaker 1: interesting game where you are playing leaf shaped tiles and
- 8:37Speaker 1: making connections based on the number where the points of
- 8:40Speaker 1: those tiles touch.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I like Leaf quite a bit.
- 8:44Speaker 1: There was a sort of confusing issue where somebody else
- 8:47Speaker 1: had a damaged box and I didn't mind a damaged box,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and they seem really disappointed, so I traded with them,
- 8:52Speaker 1: and I indvertently traded away my expansion as well. I
- 8:57Speaker 1: had the expansion and I was in the box I
- 8:59Speaker 1: traded it that away. I didn't realize I had given
- 9:01Speaker 1: away my expansion for base Leaf, and then so when
- 9:05Speaker 1: I put it on the trade, I said it had
- 9:08Speaker 1: the expansion in it, and I didn't say anything about
- 9:10Speaker 1: the damage box because I'd forgotten. So then I ended
- 9:13Speaker 1: up offering the person I traded with another game to
- 9:16Speaker 1: say sorry for the trade error. So a little disappointing
- 9:23Speaker 1: to not really get my trades worth for Leaf by
- 9:27Speaker 1: giving away extra stuff, but I don't know if I'd
- 9:29Speaker 1: have gotten as good a trade had I marketed it properly.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Next up is a Great Western Trail second Edition. This is
- 9:35Speaker 1: a game I really admire, but I don't really enjoy,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and I've had it for two and a half years
- 9:39Speaker 1: now and.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Never played it. So time to move it along.
- 9:43Speaker 1: It's also a game that just has a really consistent
- 9:46Speaker 1: rating on board game Geek, so it does yield a
- 9:49Speaker 1: positive response from people. Next up is It's a Wonderful World.
- 9:55Speaker 1: This one was maybe the hardest one to put on
- 9:57Speaker 1: the trade pile because I do really like this game.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I think that the mechanism it uses for a building
- 10:03Speaker 1: is really interesting that when you play a card, you
- 10:06Speaker 1: can either spend it for its resources or you can
- 10:09Speaker 1: put it in your building zone and you can put
- 10:12Speaker 1: resource on it to build it, and once you build it,
- 10:14Speaker 1: it generates resources for you, and the resources generate in
- 10:18Speaker 1: orders to this whole thing where you like build a
- 10:19Speaker 1: building and then it generates resources that let you build
- 10:22Speaker 1: another building before the next round of resources, and very
- 10:25Speaker 1: compelling way that the game works. Pretty samey after a
- 10:31Speaker 1: few rounds, I didn't buy the I think there was
- 10:34Speaker 1: an expansion I did not buy that, But also it's
- 10:37Speaker 1: sort of futuristic themed, and when I first got it,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I thought there was probably room in my collection for
- 10:42Speaker 1: both that and Seven Wonders, But honestly, I've never played it.
- 10:47Speaker 2: I very rarely play it.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I mostly play Seven Wonders and so at some point
- 10:52Speaker 1: it's like, why am I keeping this? You're a white
- 10:56Speaker 1: breasted nuthatch. Next up is La Patisserie Rococo. This one
- 11:00Speaker 1: is definitely goes in the category of we played it.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I could recognize it's good, we didn't enjoy it a lot,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and I might as well trade it while it's hot
- 11:11Speaker 1: and get something really good for it instead. That was
- 11:13Speaker 1: kind of what that was kind of the thinking. Ten
- 11:17Speaker 1: Penny Parks is kind of the same boat as Furnace.
- 11:21Speaker 1: This is the game I really liked.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I think that the way.
- 11:25Speaker 1: The tiles fit together is very interesting. I love the
- 11:27Speaker 1: art design or the graphic design of it, and the
- 11:31Speaker 1: art from Vincent du Trade very cool. But it just
- 11:34Speaker 1: wasn't getting played. And almost anytime we want to play
- 11:36Speaker 1: a game like that, we'll play either Barren Park or
- 11:40Speaker 1: Patchwork or Tipperary, and so Ten Penny Parks was just languishing.
- 11:46Speaker 1: So rather than languishing and not getting played, I'll give
- 11:49Speaker 1: it to someone else who will play it and I
- 11:50Speaker 1: get to try something new.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Nextcept, we have Scapegoat.
- 11:54Speaker 1: This is a social deduction game that's pretty interesting. There's
- 11:58Speaker 1: a gimmick where one person is gonna be the scapegoat.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Everybody has to agree and vote for that one person,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and if you are the one person, you can escape
- 12:07Speaker 1: by going to the cops. But if somebody goes to
- 12:10Speaker 1: the cops in error when they aren't the scapegoat, then
- 12:13Speaker 1: everyone loses. So there's this interesting thing where you feel
- 12:17Speaker 1: persecuted and you go to the cops and you've made
- 12:19Speaker 1: everyone lose the game. I thought it was interesting, but
- 12:22Speaker 1: it was not a game I could get played very often,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and it ended up just being one of those ones
- 12:26Speaker 1: where I don't play that many social deduction games, and
- 12:28Speaker 1: I already have a stable of ones that I think
- 12:30Speaker 1: are really good, so I'm not gonna not gonna play them.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I said, we have the final Flick Tier. This is
- 12:36Speaker 1: a flicking game where you are flicking dice that are
- 12:39Speaker 1: ships and attacking other players with the dice. This is
- 12:43Speaker 1: from designer Gave Barrett. The art on the cover is Okay.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Comes with a really good pair of neoprene mats and
- 12:50Speaker 1: lots of cool dice and cards. I thought it was
- 12:51Speaker 1: really fun. We played it once or twice, but my
- 12:55Speaker 1: family does not seem to like flicking games, so it
- 12:58Speaker 1: languished and I let it go. Next up, we have
- 13:01Speaker 1: Lord of the Rings The Duel. This is an interesting
- 13:03Speaker 1: game from Cosmos where you one person is playing Gandalf,
- 13:06Speaker 1: the other person is playing the ball rog and they're
- 13:11Speaker 1: fighting on the bridge. It's our really good two player
- 13:14Speaker 1: card prediction game where you're trying to spot what the
- 13:17Speaker 1: other person's doing. I thought it was neat, but it
- 13:19Speaker 1: wouldn't get that much play, and frankly, if I'm gonna
- 13:21Speaker 1: play a game like that.
- 13:22Speaker 2: I should play Strife. So off it goes.
- 13:25Speaker 1: And finally Clue Conspiracy I thought did not like, so
- 13:28Speaker 1: I let that go. So those are the sixteen games
- 13:31Speaker 1: I got rid of in the math trade. Here are
- 13:34Speaker 1: the fifteen games that I acquired. I'm gonna talk a
- 13:36Speaker 1: little bit less about each of these because I haven't
- 13:37Speaker 1: played them, but i'll tell you the thing that attracted
- 13:40Speaker 1: me to them, and I'm gonna try to avoid saying
- 13:43Speaker 1: and I've heard it's good, because most of these I've
- 13:46Speaker 1: either heard they were good or they looked intriguing in
- 13:49Speaker 1: some way. So I'm gonna try to demonstrate the intriguing part.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Why did I put them down as a game i'd
- 13:54Speaker 1: be interested in having either by buying cheaply in an
- 13:56Speaker 1: auction or by trading one of my games for them.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I don't recall which game traded for which game, so
- 14:03Speaker 1: we're just gonna be in the dark about that as
- 14:06Speaker 1: we listen. First up is Horrified Greek Monsters. I like
- 14:11Speaker 1: the Horrified system, and I've always wanted to try the
- 14:14Speaker 1: other Horrified games, but I don't know that I like
- 14:17Speaker 1: it enough to buy it. That's the other thing I'm
- 14:19Speaker 1: not going to keep saying. I don't know if I
- 14:21Speaker 1: like it enough to buy it, but I'm interested in trade.
- 14:23Speaker 1: That's why I traded for it, so I'm not gonna
- 14:25Speaker 1: say it. I like the theory, the idea of the
- 14:28Speaker 1: Greek monsters as the villains. It's a fun alternate world.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I'm more interested in it than the American cryptids, for example,
- 14:38Speaker 1: So keen.
- 14:39Speaker 2: To try that.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Next tip, we have Bury Me in the Rift. This
- 14:43Speaker 1: is a very simple or a lightweight solo game with
- 14:47Speaker 1: cool art that I got in the auction for a dollar.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I think Horseless Carriage. This is a I guess I
- 14:55Speaker 1: thought this looked like an interesting Splotter game that seemed
- 14:59Speaker 1: a little less mean than some of the other ones.
- 15:02Speaker 2: It was the newest one.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's very highly rated and I haven't played a spottery
- 15:07Speaker 1: game on the table. I didn't want to play food
- 15:09Speaker 1: Chain Magnate. The theme is interesting, but the gameplay that
- 15:13Speaker 1: I've read about just seems horrifying and the Great Zimbabwe
- 15:17Speaker 1: I hate the way it looks, so I'm also not
- 15:19Speaker 1: a big fan of playing a game of that theme
- 15:22Speaker 1: designed by a couple of Germans, so horseless carriage, I
- 15:25Speaker 1: thought I'd give a try Istanbul the Dice Game. I
- 15:28Speaker 1: mostly picked this because Istanbul is very highly rated. The
- 15:31Speaker 1: Dice Game is rated well, and one of the social
- 15:35Speaker 1: media board game folks that I follow she really really.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Likes all things Istanbul.
- 15:40Speaker 1: She has talked about Istanbul the Dice Game being a
- 15:43Speaker 1: really nice little filler. So we got that and I'm
- 15:46Speaker 1: excited to get the feel for it. I've already played
- 15:50Speaker 1: it once and I did enjoy it. Next tip, we
- 15:53Speaker 1: have Mystery Rummery Mystery Rummy Jack the Ripper. I've always
- 15:58Speaker 1: been fascinated by this school of game. There are a
- 16:02Speaker 1: bunch of different Mystery Rummy games. This is the first
- 16:05Speaker 1: in a series from designer Mike Elliott, who's best known
- 16:08Speaker 1: for the Thunderstone Quest deck building game, but I think
- 16:13Speaker 1: many other games as well, and so keen to try it.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I'm not a huge fan of the Jack the Ripper theme,
- 16:20Speaker 1: but it does seem to be the theme except we
- 16:24Speaker 1: have Fayo. This is an excellent example of a game
- 16:27Speaker 1: I heard about one mechanism and I really want to
- 16:29Speaker 1: see how it works. Fayom is a game about ancient
- 16:32Speaker 1: Egypt where you are I don't know, doing area controller
- 16:35Speaker 1: building stuff. But there seems to be this mechanism with
- 16:39Speaker 1: the cards where you discard the cards in the order
- 16:43Speaker 1: and then later you pick them back up out of
- 16:45Speaker 1: your discard pile, and so the order you play them
- 16:48Speaker 1: in becomes really important because you get them back in
- 16:50Speaker 1: your hand in reverse order of the order you played them.
- 16:53Speaker 1: That seems to be the big deal with the game.
- 16:55Speaker 1: The art is sort of classic Freedman Freeze art style.
- 17:00Speaker 1: It's sort of green and not super evolved.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Looking at it looks like a much older game than it.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Is, but I'm excited to try. It's also new and
- 17:09Speaker 1: shrink Tranquility is the next one. That is a tiny
- 17:12Speaker 1: box all play game where you are cooperatively sailing a
- 17:17Speaker 1: ship on the ocean and trying to avoid it. Looks
- 17:20Speaker 1: from the cover at least getting eaten by a tentacle monster.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Like I said, it's cooperative puzzle game that looks fun.
- 17:27Speaker 1: No Ma Hollow is a lightweight set collection game with
- 17:33Speaker 1: interesting tile placement elements and really good teaming. It's going
- 17:38Speaker 1: to be an excellent game to play. I can't wait
- 17:39Speaker 1: to try it. Tayo Tiwacan City of the Gods is
- 17:44Speaker 1: probably the highest rated game that I got. This is
- 17:47Speaker 1: one I've wanted to play for a while. I played
- 17:48Speaker 1: it once or twice on board game Arena or Yukata
- 17:51Speaker 1: and it was just too much to try to track
- 17:54Speaker 1: in my brain asynchronously. So getting to play it on
- 17:57Speaker 1: the real table looks very excited. I think this will
- 18:01Speaker 1: be probably the I think it's a simone Lucciani design.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I think it'll be the one that'll stick. I'm very
- 18:07Speaker 1: excited for this too. TiO Khan City of the Gods
- 18:12Speaker 1: Seasons is an out of print game that I've played
- 18:18Speaker 1: a few times and I can recognize has kind of
- 18:20Speaker 1: Resarkhana levels of replayability and combo building. I'm very excited
- 18:25Speaker 1: to get this to the table and get to play
- 18:27Speaker 1: it some, and then I will probably return to the
- 18:30Speaker 1: online form and try it a bunch there, so that's seasons.
- 18:33Speaker 1: If you're interested in giving it a try, send me
- 18:35Speaker 1: an invite on board game Marina Warhammer Quest the Adventure
- 18:39Speaker 1: Card Game. Honestly, I put my dollar in or five
- 18:43Speaker 1: dollars in for the auction for this one, thinking it
- 18:45Speaker 1: was Pathfinder Quest or Pathfinder the Adventurer Card Game. But
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm still excited for it. It looks neat and my
- 18:53Speaker 1: son and I will probably enjoy going through the adventures
- 18:57Speaker 1: of it. I thought it would be a slightly bigger
- 18:58Speaker 1: box of cards than it is. It might be a
- 19:00Speaker 1: relatively limited play, but I paid a relatively limited.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Amount of money for it, so no harm, no foul.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Reign of Dragonists is a trick taking game, or it's
- 19:12Speaker 1: a ladder climbing game. You can find my review of
- 19:15Speaker 1: it in an earlier episode of the podcast. I will
- 19:17Speaker 1: link it in the show notes. I played it at
- 19:19Speaker 1: gen Con last year with listener Krishni John kenos Hey.
- 19:23Speaker 1: John and I enjoyed it moderately. I didn't quite enjoy
- 19:28Speaker 1: it enough to buy it at the full fifteen bucks
- 19:31Speaker 1: from Grandpa Backs Games, but I did enjoy it enough
- 19:35Speaker 1: that when it came up in the auction on this event.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I snapped it up so excited to play that again
- 19:42Speaker 1: and have another easy to access card game in my quiver.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I don't have a quiver, but you know what I mean.
- 19:49Speaker 1: I picked up Volka, which is a I don't know,
- 19:52Speaker 1: a card battler of some sort. There was a free
- 19:54Speaker 1: table and it was new and shrink and I looked.
- 19:56Speaker 1: It's not highly rated, but I thought it the art,
- 19:58Speaker 1: at least is cool. I've seen the owner of the
- 20:01Speaker 1: game company Terrible Games on TikTok, so I don't know.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I'd try. It didn't cost me anything.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Her story is a game about being a biographer or
- 20:10Speaker 1: a history writer, writing history about powerful women. I'll be
- 20:14Speaker 1: interested to see. I've seen a number of people talk
- 20:16Speaker 1: about this game being really good, and I hope it is.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I absolutely hope it is. It worries me that it
- 20:22Speaker 1: feels a little forward in It feels like an educational game,
- 20:28Speaker 1: like a game specifically designed to teach you about a
- 20:31Speaker 1: particular history moment, which I salute the desire to do that,
- 20:35Speaker 1: but I really want the game to be good as well,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and sometimes when you go educational topic first, the game suffers.
- 20:43Speaker 2: So I'm a little leery, but it looked like a
- 20:45Speaker 2: good trade.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And so I hopped on that one. And finally Starship Captains.
- 20:49Speaker 1: This is the CGE game that's sort.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Of like.
- 20:53Speaker 1: A Star Trek type story, looks pretty fun, great art.
- 20:58Speaker 1: It reminds me of the art from Space Base, so
- 21:02Speaker 1: I don't know if the artist is the same. It's
- 21:04Speaker 1: got a kind of cartoony look a little bit like
- 21:06Speaker 1: Star Trek. Below decks as well, and I think it
- 21:09Speaker 1: will be an interesting engine builder.
- 21:13Speaker 2: The Secret Cabal gave.
- 21:14Speaker 1: It a middling to middling positive review, and so I
- 21:18Speaker 1: thought I would give it a try when I had
- 21:20Speaker 1: the opportunity to get it for free or in trade.
- 21:25Speaker 1: So that brings me to the end of my review
- 21:28Speaker 1: of Out with the some games, In with some others.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Hopefully you are excited to hear about those in the
- 21:34Speaker 1: way that I am excited to play them. I'm keen
- 21:37Speaker 1: to give them a try. You know how they are. Well,
- 21:42Speaker 1: I've just arrived home and I'm about to head in,
- 21:44Speaker 1: so I want to say, what games have you acquired lately?
- 21:46Speaker 1: Head over to board Game You Killed three two sixty
- 21:48Speaker 1: nine and share your thoughts there or post about this episode. Generally,
- 21:52Speaker 1: let us know what you think and share your thoughts
- 21:54Speaker 1: with the fellow listeners. Thanks for joining me on my
- 21:57Speaker 1: walk today. I'll your next walk is the cousins is
- 21:59Speaker 1: Mind Well, good bye. The art is sort of classic
- 22:23Speaker 1: Freedman freedom freeze, Freezeman, freedom freeze Freeman, Freedomen freeze art style,
