Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Infinite Grace: Overcoming the Law of Inertia to Effectuate Change

- 0:01The law of inertia holds that it takes energy to move something
- 0:05that is stationary, and the more massive the object is, the more
- 0:09energy required to move it. A similar principle operates in
- 0:14human actions. We have our fixed habits,
- 0:17whether physical habits, instincts, trained responses,
- 0:22preconceived notions, biases, determined routines, etcetera
- 0:27that represent our status quo. This all operates essentially on
- 0:32its own, as the same law holds that a body in motion tends to
- 0:37stay in motion. So we have our fixed habits,
- 0:40routines and orbits that we follow regularly, and it takes
- 0:44energy to change any of these and establish a new way of
- 0:49understanding, a new way of doing things, a new way of
- 0:53responding. The embedded habits of nature
- 0:56and nurture are very powerful in their own right.
- 1:01They are there to provide a form of stability to the creation,
- 1:05and any change needs to work out the details in such a way as to
- 1:10not totally destabilize the systems.
- 1:13Thus, our physical nature, our vital nature, and our mental
- 1:18nature all have certain prerogatives and rights of
- 1:22obstruction, delay and denial built into the developmental
- 1:27systems. Only when a needed change
- 1:30achieves the necessary quantum of energy and has overcome the
- 1:35objections and obstructions can it take hold and propagate
- 1:40widely. To the extent that we focus our
- 1:43attention on the difficulties, the obstructions, and attempt to
- 1:48address them directly, we will likely not have the necessary
- 1:52force, energy and focus needed to overcome long established and
- 1:58deeply rooted patterns. That is why it is necessary to
- 2:02refocus the attention on the higher powers of the spiritual
- 2:06evolutionary development and the spiritual force that is
- 2:10attempting to manifest as that is the power, knowledge and
- 2:16intentionality that is needed to accomplish change over time.
- 2:22We may therefore look to the concept of aspiration, which is
- 2:26a turning of the attention to the higher force, consecration,
- 2:31which is a focusing and fixing of that connection once we
- 2:35establish it, and receptivity, which is allowing that force to
- 2:40enter and effectuate change as the method of overcoming the
- 2:44inertia of the world as it currently functions.
- 2:48We may call this response the action of the Divine Grace the
- 2:53Mother notes quote. In the whole manifestation there
- 2:58is an infinite Grace constantly at work to bring the world out
- 3:01of the misery, the obscurity, and the stupidity in which it
- 3:06lies. From all time this grace has
- 3:09been at work, unremitting in its effort.
- 3:12And how many thousands of years were necessary for this world to
- 3:15awaken to the need for something greater, more true, more
- 3:20beautiful? Everyone can gauge from the
- 3:24resistance he meets in his own being, the tremendous resistance
- 3:29which the world opposes to the work of the Grace.
- 3:33And it is only when one understands that all external
- 3:37things, all mental constructions, all material
- 3:40efforts are vain, futile, if they are not entirely
- 3:45consecrated to this light and force from above, to this truth
- 3:51which is trying to express itself, that one is ready to
- 3:54make decisive progress. So the only truly effective
- 3:59attitude is a perfect, total, fervent, giving our being to
- 4:04that which is above us and which alone has the power to change
- 4:09everything. End Quote.
