- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37He's. Preparing you.
- 0:39He is causing you to be a vessel prepared for the masters.
- 0:44Use. I don't know what he's going to
- 0:46use. You for I don't.
- 0:47Know what he has coming around? We can only see to the corner.
- 0:50He's the only one that can see around it.
- 0:52We don't know what he has prepared for us, but.
- 0:54What we do know? Is that He can prepare us and
- 0:57use us for great things, even us.
- 1:01Do you believe that? Do you believe that God is
- 1:04preparing you for something good?
- 1:07In the mundane and humdrum of life, it can be easy to just get
- 1:11up, get ready for work, go to work, come home from work, eat
- 1:15dinner, veg out and watch Netflix, go to sleep, rinse and
- 1:18repeat. God in heaven has a greater
- 1:21purpose for your life. He is preparing you to do what
- 1:25He's made you to do. And yes, you do have a purpose.
- 1:29Today, Pastor Lewis invites you to discover that purpose and
- 1:32take a step of obedience. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:36Book of Second Timothy, Chapter 2, with today's edition of
- 1:40Living Waters of Grace. To argue.
- 1:44And strive about words to no prophet to the ruin of.
- 1:49Hears that has. Nothing to do with teaching the
- 1:51word of God. Profane and idle babbling that
- 1:55has nothing to do. With the word of God, those.
- 1:58Things are ungodly, but when we study.
- 2:02The Word of God and we are. Workmen.
- 2:05The Bible says we are workmen. With the word of God we study it
- 2:10just like Paul said a couple verses back.
- 2:12That one of the things we are is a.
- 2:14Farmer A hard working. Farmer and in doing that we have
- 2:19to make. Sure that we are.
- 2:21Hard workers getting into the Word of God, spending time with
- 2:24him in prayer. So that we rightly.
- 2:28Divide and that word. Rightly divide.
- 2:30Actually means cutting straight, cutting the word of God.
- 2:34Straight. We know that farmers cut furrows
- 2:37straight. A Carpenter will cut a board
- 2:40straight. We as pastors or as teachers of
- 2:44the Word, are to cut the Word straight, cut it straight, give
- 2:49it straight. We don't add to it, we don't
- 2:51take away from it, we don't sugarcoat it, we don't
- 2:55breakdance around sin. We cut it straight, just the way
- 3:02the Lord gives it to us. And this and this sum, when he
- 3:05says, Sean, that means to keep away from profane means
- 3:10irreverent, unconsecrated and babbling just simply means empty
- 3:16chatter, He said stay away from those things.
- 3:19Because they don't lead. To godliness it leads to more
- 3:22ungodliness. These things only lead to
- 3:25arguments bitter arguments bitter.
- 3:27Debates. And no one comes out of it
- 3:31benefiting. No one benefits out of it but
- 3:34when you teach. The Word of God there should be
- 3:37a spirit that is. Along with it.
- 3:40That will lead. Us to godliness.
- 3:43It encourages us, it corrects us.
- 3:48If need. Be it convicts us, but it.
- 3:50Leads us to godliness and then in verse 17, verse 17 here it
- 3:57says and their message will spread like here in my in the
- 4:02new King James, it says cancer. But in most other versions it
- 4:05actually uses the term gangrene. And I don't know how many of you
- 4:09are familiar with gangrene, but it is a very nasty infection
- 4:13that one can get and you get it from.
- 4:16A lack of or. No blood flow.
- 4:19Blood flow that's supposed. To be going to the tissues or
- 4:22the limbs or organs and when it doesn't.
- 4:25Go. The tissue dies.
- 4:28When there's no. Blood flow to the.
- 4:30Organs or the limbs? Or the tissue.
- 4:32That tissue dies. And that's what Paul is saying
- 4:36to to Timothy, that their message.
- 4:38Will spread like gangrene. It'll spread quickly.
- 4:43But it is an infection that gets into.
- 4:45The body of believers. And because there's no life in
- 4:50teaching error, there's no life in that.
- 4:52There's no life in teaching heresy.
- 4:55There's no. Life in arguing.
- 4:56There's no life in any of that. And because of that the.
- 4:59Remembers the tissue begins. To die the.
- 5:03Ministry will begin to. Die the life.
- 5:07Is in the blood, isn't it? So he.
- 5:09Says Hymenaeus and Philetus. Are of this sort.
- 5:14They have, you know, they are the ones who were teaching these
- 5:16things and they were actually saying look at verse 18.
- 5:19They have strayed from the truth, and they were saying that
- 5:22the resurrection has. Already passed, so there's been
- 5:25a lot of error. Teaching in.
- 5:27Error that has. Come into the churches, even
- 5:29back in Second Thessalonians we read about.
- 5:32Where the teachers the false teachers?
- 5:34Were coming to the Thessalonians and they were basically saying
- 5:37that the second coming had already.
- 5:39Passed had already come. Jesus already come.
- 5:41You missed it, and they stumbled, the people.
- 5:44And now here they're saying that the resurrection has already
- 5:47come and they're stumbling, the people.
- 5:50But that's what. Happens with heresy.
- 5:52That's what happens with air teaching in air.
- 5:55You stumble the people. And we know how important the
- 5:58resurrection is. That is a core.
- 6:00You know, it's it's a. Core source of our theology.
- 6:03I mean, without the resurrection we have no.
- 6:05Hope do we? Without the resurrection, we
- 6:07have no hope. So Paul's saying these.
- 6:11People, you got to. Stay away from them.
- 6:13But then he says, he gives us that assurance here in verse 19.
- 6:16He says nevertheless, the solid foundation of God stands.
- 6:20Having this heal, the Lord knows.
- 6:22Those who are his, the Lord knows those who are here.
- 6:26The solid foundation stands First Corinthians 311 for no
- 6:31other foundation can be laid other can anyone lay than that
- 6:35which. Is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
- 6:38Who is our firm foundation? He is the solid rock Isaiah. 40
- 6:44and 8. Says the grass.
- 6:45Withers and the flower. Fades, but the Word of God
- 6:48stands. First Peter one in 25, but the
- 6:52word of the Lord endures forever.
- 6:56And then of course, we all know about Matthew and Seven.
- 6:59The Story of. Building a foundation on a rock
- 7:02and building it on the difference of building on a rock
- 7:04and building it on sand. The foundation that is built on
- 7:07a rock will stand. That's a wise man who builds on
- 7:11a rock. And when adversity comes, rather
- 7:13be rain, wind. Or floods.
- 7:16It can. Beat upon the house, but the
- 7:17house will stand. If you are built.
- 7:20On the solid foundation on the truth.
- 7:23Of God's Word. Not heresy, not someone's ideas,
- 7:27not someone's thoughts, not someone who wants to argue when
- 7:30you are built on the truth. Of God's Word.
- 7:33It is a solid. Foundation and you will stand in
- 7:37adversity. You won't fall away, you.
- 7:39Won't deny him. You will stand in adversity.
- 7:42It can keep. You.
- 7:44So then we go to verse. 19 Let's go to the bottom of 19, it says.
- 7:49The Lord knows. Those who are his.
- 7:51And let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from
- 7:55iniquity, and those. Who are Christ?
- 7:58Will depart from iniquity. They will not walk in the ways
- 8:03of the Sinner. They won't walk in the way of a
- 8:06Sinner. They will depart.
- 8:08From Iniquity back in Numbers chapter 16, back around verse 5,
- 8:15Moses is confronting Cora and those who are in rebellion with
- 8:20him, and he said tomorrow the Lord are going to show.
- 8:24Those who are with him, the Lord are going to show.
- 8:27Those who are his. Tomorrow and then in verse 20. 6
- 8:31after it was clear. That it was Moses who was the
- 8:35one that the people should be following.
- 8:37Because of the rod. That Aaron had.
- 8:39That actually spouted. A rod that was not connected to
- 8:43anything, just spouted. And because of that.
- 8:46The Lord said to them. Get away, those of you who are
- 8:51with the Lord, get away. From these tents of wickedness
- 8:55get away from them, and that's. Exactly what, Paul?
- 8:59Is saying here that everyone who names the name of Christ depart
- 9:04from iniquity, And then in verse 20 says, But in a great house
- 9:08there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also wood
- 9:11and clay, some of honor and some of dishonor.
- 9:15Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from the latter.
- 9:18He will be a. Vessel of honor sanctified and
- 9:22useful for the Master prepared. For every good work, this is a.
- 9:27Very encouraging verse here because what it's saying here
- 9:30basically that in a great. House The church is a great
- 9:33house. And there's vessels in a church,
- 9:36just like in your own house you have.
- 9:38Vessels that you probably brought out.
- 9:41On for Thanksgiving. Because they were your.
- 9:44Good China, you know, when company comes over, we bring
- 9:47this China out, you know? Because that's the good stuff.
- 9:51Other stuff to use every day. I know myself.
- 9:54We like to eat off of plate more paper plates you.
- 9:57Know we don't have. The good stuff out every day.
- 9:59We eat off of paper plates. Eat.
- 10:01Throw them away, but in every. House there is, vessels there,
- 10:06there are. Vessels of gold and.
- 10:07Silver, they're good vessels, vessels that.
- 10:10Stand. They're valuable.
- 10:11And then there's. Vessels of wood.
- 10:13And clay, those vessels are not so.
- 10:15Valuable what Paul is. Saying here is that just like
- 10:19they're vessels of honor, vessels of gold and silver,
- 10:22they're vessels of honor because they contain good stuff.
- 10:27They contain good stuff and because of that.
- 10:30They are vessels of. Honor, but they're.
- 10:32Also vessels of. Dishonor.
- 10:35They don't contain good stuff, they contain ungodliness, things
- 10:39that are contrary. To the word of God.
- 10:41They are your disapproved workers of God.
- 10:45And he says. As a result of that, but if that
- 10:50vessel. Would cleanse himself.
- 10:53He can. Become a vessel of.
- 10:55Honor and we cleanse by confessing and allowing the Lord
- 11:00to cleanse us from the things that are unrighteous in our
- 11:03life, and we can become. Vessels of.
- 11:06Honor, we don't have to remain vessels of dishonor.
- 11:11Don't let the enemy make. You feel guilty about.
- 11:14Something you've done and make you feel that God can't reach
- 11:17you now. God can't ever use you again.
- 11:20That is the biggest lie. To Christians, and unfortunately
- 11:25there's Christians who will tell other Christians things like
- 11:27that. You've blew it.
- 11:29You've blown it. God can't use you anymore.
- 11:32You've lost that position. God loves each and every one of
- 11:35us. And he desires for us.
- 11:37To turn back to Him and we can become vessels of honor again.
- 11:43We can repent and we can turn and become cleansed again.
- 11:50It's the blood of Jesus. Christ that has cleansed us from
- 11:53all sin. Is what the Bible says.
- 11:57So then he goes on and he says, and be sanctified.
- 12:00That means be set apart and useful for the master.
- 12:04Prepare for every good work and. This preparing is important to
- 12:09me because there are things that I go through sometimes and I
- 12:12wonder, Lord, why am I going through this?
- 12:14What is going on? What is going on in my life?
- 12:16Why am I going through this? Why?
- 12:18It just seems like it just seemed like things will keep
- 12:20coming sometimes. You get stretches of that.
- 12:23I don't know if anyone else can relate to that, but sometimes
- 12:25you just get stretches of things that keeps coming time after
- 12:28time and time again. And I'm realizing now that God
- 12:31is preparing you. For a good work he's.
- 12:35Preparing you he is. Causing you to be a vessel
- 12:40prepared for the master. 'S use.
- 12:43I don't know what he's going to use.
- 12:44You for I. Don't know what he has coming
- 12:46around. We can only see to the corner.
- 12:48He's the only one that can see around it.
- 12:50We don't know what he has prepared for us, but what?
- 12:52We do know. Is that He can prepare us and
- 12:55use us for great things, even us.
- 12:59And then he goes on into verse 22.
- 13:02He says flee also youthful lust. You know, flee those things.
- 13:07Those things are not of servants of honor or vessels of honor.
- 13:11That's for vessels of. Dishonor.
- 13:13Flee those things. Flee sexual immorality.
- 13:16Flee the love of money. Flee power.
- 13:19But also flee talking about profane and idle babblings.
- 13:23Flee from that. Flee from teaching and error.
- 13:26Flee from striving. Over words, flee.
- 13:28From those things, flee from always wanting to be right.
- 13:32Flee from that, but then you have to pursue.
- 13:36So God. Gives us three things here that
- 13:38we need to do. We need to flee, pursue and
- 13:40avoid. We know what to flee, but now he
- 13:43tells us what we need. To pursue.
- 13:46And we need to pursue faith. We need to pursue love.
- 13:49We need to pursue. Peace.
- 13:51And that. Righteousness is righteous.
- 13:53Righteous. Standing right, standing with
- 13:55God. Let's pursue that.
- 13:56Pursue faith or faithfulness. Pursue love, that agape love.
- 14:02That unconditional. Love that love like Jesus Christ
- 14:05loves. It's very difficult in our flesh
- 14:08to love that way. We usually love those who love
- 14:11us. We usually love those who.
- 14:14Do good things to. Us or for us, we love those who.
- 14:16Act the way we want them to act, and then when they don't, all of
- 14:19a sudden we don't love them as much and we know the.
- 14:22World. The world.
- 14:23'S love is very conditional. They'll walk out of a marriage
- 14:26because they'll just say I just don't love you no more.
- 14:28I just don't love you no more. Very conditional.
- 14:30But the love of God is unconditional, and it never.
- 14:33Fails. It never fails.
- 14:37Even in his chastisement. Of us, It's his love for us.
- 14:42When he convicts us, he's showing his.
- 14:44Love for us and. Obviously, when he.
- 14:46Blesses us. He's showing his.
- 14:48Love for us, but the. Biggest act of his.
- 14:51Love for us? Is when he sent his son Jesus
- 14:54Christ to come and. Die on a cross.
- 14:58For not his sins, our sins. That was the greatest act of
- 15:04love ever. But he said.
- 15:06We do that with. Those who calling the Lord.
- 15:08Out of a pure heart. Need to find other people who
- 15:12are seeking the Lord. The way that we.
- 15:14Either want to seek the Lord or are seeking the Lord.
- 15:17Everyone that sits in the Great house is not necessarily.
- 15:21Of a pure. Heart, and if we're honest with
- 15:24ourselves, most of us from time to time.
- 15:28Will have a heart that's not necessarily pure.
- 15:31There are things that come into our our thoughts.
- 15:33There are things that come into our mind, There are things that
- 15:36we we think about that are not necessarily.
- 15:38Pure. But we have a God that is
- 15:41totally pure. And we can always go to him and
- 15:45ask him even to cleanse us from any impurity that we.
- 15:48Do have but then. In 23.
- 15:51He says avoid Foolish. And ignorant disputes avoid
- 15:55pointless or stupid and. Useless.
- 15:58Unlearned disputes avoid those things because they only
- 16:02generate strife. That means more battles, more
- 16:06fights, more arguments. That's all it does.
- 16:09Getting into these debates sometimes, I mean these
- 16:11conversations got to make sure that when we get into these
- 16:13conversations that first of all our motives are right.
- 16:17You know, we have men that we do breakfast with sometimes.
- 16:22Our brother Tom runs that and we have.
- 16:25Bible. Studies.
- 16:26The men have Bible studies and I can't talk about what the women
- 16:29have because I'm not invited to that.
- 16:30Y'all don't ever, y'all don't invite us to y'all women's
- 16:32studies. But I understand that that's a
- 16:34blessing that we have those. Studies as well.
- 16:37But the point I'm trying to make that in all of these studies,
- 16:39whether it's men's studies or whether it's women's studies,
- 16:42the point I'm making is that if there's a discussion, there is
- 16:45discussion about. The word of God.
- 16:47There's not debate, it's not argument, it's discussion about
- 16:51the word. Of God, because it's.
- 16:53Based on the. Word of God when?
- 16:56Someone comes with a perspective.
- 16:58It is rooted and grounded from the word.
- 17:01Of God I love. Going to our breakfasts on on
- 17:04Saturday mornings because I. Always leave there edified.
- 17:08I've never left one of those. Breakfasts and felt.
- 17:11Angry or bitter? Or upset.
- 17:13Or felt like I was in. An argument with anybody.
- 17:15I've never left there feeling that way.
- 17:17The discussions that we have and we may only get through one or
- 17:20two. Verses because of.
- 17:21Discussion. But it's not discussion about
- 17:24somebody trying to be right or somebody coming up with some new
- 17:28theology. It's not.
- 17:29That it's a discussion about the Word of God.
- 17:33And it's based on the word. Of God.
- 17:35So when you. Leave there.
- 17:36You leave there edified. You leave there looking.
- 17:39To. Be more godly you leave there.
- 17:42Encouraged to be more. Godly so he says.
- 17:46There, as in verse 24, he says and a servant of the Lord must
- 17:50not quarrel, that means a servant of the Lord must not
- 17:52fight, must not be battling, must not get into argument, that
- 17:56word. Quarrel.
- 17:57Actually means it's like hand to hand combat.
- 18:00It's a military term and it actually means like hand to hand
- 18:03combat. A servant of the Lord shouldn't
- 18:05be involved in that. It should not be involved in.
- 18:10Even with just words, you should not be involved in something.
- 18:13That would symbolize. Hand to hand combat.
- 18:17But he said. But be gentle to all, and be.
- 18:20Able to. Teach and be patient.
- 18:23Be able to teach. And be patient.
- 18:27That's a servant. Of the Lord.
- 18:29It's that and then in verse 25, it talks about that humility,
- 18:32the humility of correcting those who are in opposition.
- 18:36And there are sometimes that we come against people who are in
- 18:38opposition of the word, but that doesn't mean again, that we
- 18:43leave them wounded and bludgeon. I mean, there are times that you
- 18:47could get into conversations with some people.
- 18:49Who are just bitter. They're hurting anyway, so they
- 18:53unleash. All of that wrath.
- 18:55On you in a discussion and it's covered.
- 18:59It's covered with thinking. We're we're talking.
- 19:01About the word of. God, no.
- 19:02We're. Really talking about some issues
- 19:04that you have because you walk away.
- 19:06From that feeling bludgeoned. Beat up.
- 19:11Never underestimate the effect. Of our words.
- 19:16It can wound and leave deep wounds, but he says in humility.
- 19:23We should be. Correcting those who are in
- 19:24opposition. And now this is the part I love
- 19:27the most. And it's been, it's been weaved
- 19:29throughout the entire section. There's four reasons.
- 19:33Why we? Should be gentle.
- 19:36There's four reasons why we should.
- 19:37Be. Humble when we're correcting
- 19:40people, even in opposition. There's four reasons why, and
- 19:44it's the ultimate reason #1 repentance.
- 19:48The whole. Reason for correcting people and
- 19:50getting into a. Discussion about the truth of
- 19:54God's Word. Is that that person will come to
- 19:57repentance, or we will come to repentance if we're wrong #2
- 20:02that they may know the truth. All of these are right here.
- 20:05That they may know the truth. John 8 and 32 says, And you
- 20:09shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
- 20:11It's bondage being in heresy and under air.
- 20:16But the truth will set you free. And then the third reason that
- 20:22they may come to their senses or that they recover.
- 20:25People that the devil. Are using to get into these
- 20:28debates and get into these arguments that they enjoy.
- 20:31That's not of God. That's all this.
- 20:32That's of Satan. That's of the devil.
- 20:35It's a plan to try to get there to cause.
- 20:37Confusion in the church, that vision in the church when you
- 20:41come with all those different attitudes and, and, and being
- 20:45angry, that's just being used of the enemy.
- 20:48And it's like being into like being in a drunken stupor.
- 20:51And then the 4th and final reason.
- 20:53Is to escape the trap of that devil.
- 20:57To know that you've you've been used.
- 20:59By the devil. To do things that are ungodly
- 21:04ungodly. It causes confusion, it causes
- 21:06opposition, causes division. It's like a plant to plant
- 21:11destructive heresies, and it comes in secretly, and that's
- 21:16the reason they want. No, Paul is saying.
- 21:19We want to bring that person to repentance, not to just.
- 21:22Destroy that. Person not to just belittle a
- 21:25person who may be an heir, but that person can come to
- 21:28repentance and sometimes that person can come to repentance
- 21:32through you. And then at the very end it says
- 21:36that he to escape the snare of the devil, having been taken
- 21:40captive by him. To do.
- 21:42His will we no longer have to do the will of the evil 1 and if
- 21:48there. Are teachers that we.
- 21:49Even know or teachers that are out there and then we talk
- 21:52about, you know, teachers of prosperity, teachers of
- 21:54inclusion and all these different types of theology and
- 21:57gospels that are out to these different type of gospels that
- 21:59people were preaching air heresy.
- 22:03Let's pray for him. Let's pray.
- 22:06Let's pray that God will. Bring them to repentance, not
- 22:10just talk about them and talk about how.
- 22:13Evil it is, or how bad it is and how they.
- 22:15Should be ashamed of. Themselves or how they get
- 22:17themselves. God's going to deal with them.
- 22:19Well, we got some things God going to deal.
- 22:21With us about too. Let's.
- 22:22Pray for these people. That God will.
- 22:25Perhaps bring them to repentance and that they turn.
- 22:30They weren't always like that. And God can restore.
- 22:34So if we are people who strive, if we're people who.
- 22:39Get involved in empty chatter. If we quarrel, we can repent.
- 22:43If we have some youthful lust that we need to flee, we can do
- 22:47that today and repent from our youthful lusts.
- 22:51And if we need to turn toward godliness, if we need to turn
- 22:54toward righteousness, we need to turn toward faithfulness, love,
- 22:58and peace, if we want God to supply more of that in our lives
- 23:02and in our hearts, we can pray. For that and of course.
- 23:08If you're 1, who's here that have not received Jesus Christ
- 23:11as your Lord and. Savior, let this be the last day
- 23:15that. You don't have eternity with.
- 23:18Jesus Christ. Today you can repent and turn,
- 23:23and you can receive salvation from the wrath of God that is
- 23:27coming. You have an opportunity to do
- 23:29that today. So, Father, we remember today
- 23:32everything that he endured. We remember today.
- 23:36His love for us to even leave glory.
- 23:39To come here, not for his to die.
- 23:42For his sins, but to die. For our sins.
- 23:45And we're grateful for that. Amen.
- 23:49You've been listening to Pastor Louis Harrell here on Living
- 23:52Waters of Grace. We're digging into all that Paul
- 23:56shared with Timothy in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:00Timothy was commissioned to do the following, fight the good
- 24:03fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were
- 24:07also called, and have confessed the good confession in the
- 24:11presence of many witnesses. Timothy would be carrying on
- 24:16what Paul had taught him and continuing on in ministry, even
- 24:20though Paul knew that more hardships would come for
- 24:23Timothy. This is the Christian life.
- 24:26It's not glamorous. It's not some celebrity status,
- 24:31It's hard fought, it's gritty, it's unpopular, but it's worth
- 24:36it. Do you believe that today?
- 24:38Are you willing to fight the good fight even at the cost of
- 24:42earthly pleasures? Living the life of a follower of
- 24:45Jesus will have its heavenly rewards.
