- 0:00Speaker 1: This is your eighteenth win this season when holding your
- 0:04Speaker 1: opponent under forty percent shooting. Just talk about the defense
- 0:09Speaker 1: throughout the course of the season, especially compared to the defensive.
- 0:12Speaker 1: What was last year?
- 0:13Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, we uh, I think we spent a majority
- 0:16Speaker 2: of the year as a top five defense, and you know,
- 0:20Speaker 2: just the life and death nature of this tournament I
- 0:23Speaker 2: think has created the urgency. And I thought the kind
- 0:30Speaker 2: of the best thing that we did was was get
- 0:33Speaker 2: into them in the full court, and get into them
- 0:35Speaker 2: a little bit more in the half court and move
- 0:38Speaker 2: some of those you know, two man actions a little
- 0:41Speaker 2: bit further away and you know, put them under you know,
- 0:45Speaker 2: a little bit you know, more duress. But you know,
- 0:48Speaker 2: obviously to hold them a thirty three percent from the field,
- 0:53Speaker 2: three assists, eight turnovers in the game. Uh, we want
- 0:56Speaker 2: a lot of one on one battles, not all. But
- 0:58Speaker 2: uh yeah, our defense sustained this. We end up. I mean,
- 1:03Speaker 2: we had so many opportunities. I mean we I mean
- 1:06Speaker 2: we could have made eighteen threes. I mean we had
- 1:09Speaker 2: two's at the rim. I mean, you know, we we
- 1:13Speaker 2: could have played better offensively and finished plays more. But
- 1:16Speaker 2: great ball security and the defense was Elite.
- 1:20Speaker 3: On the left side of the room, coach Dana, Dana
- 1:23Speaker 3: and Nielsen and sports stand. Kind of what I asked
- 1:25Speaker 3: I was, when you have in a rock fight like this,
- 1:27Speaker 3: when you need very little play counts, how much does
- 1:29Speaker 3: it help not only having guys that are capable of
- 1:31Speaker 3: getting a rebound on a bad angle, but understand how
- 1:34Speaker 3: critically important that kind.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Of a play is.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we knew what it was. I mean,
- 1:38Speaker 2: you're coming into the game as a as an underdog
- 1:42Speaker 2: versus a team that you beat by thirteen points earlier
- 1:45Speaker 2: in the season, you know, which was kind of surprising.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You know that, that's how we kind of came into
- 1:54Speaker 2: the game. And obviously I've been waiting to say that,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and now I forgot your question.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Go back to Danas, Mike.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It's just like sitting on that though.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I'm glad I got it out of your system, just
- 2:08Speaker 3: in case no one asked. That's okay. My question was
- 2:10Speaker 3: with Silas's rebound, about having the have players who recognize
- 2:14Speaker 3: the importance of such small players, not just being able
- 2:16Speaker 3: to do them.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I just thought players like you know, like Silas, just
- 2:20Speaker 2: what he's done for our basketball team. The mentality I mean,
- 2:24Speaker 2: it was everything we're lacking last year. Just a guard
- 2:27Speaker 2: like him, ball hawk, incredible toughness on the backboard. You know,
- 2:33Speaker 2: it made you know, made Wagler work for it, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: made Boswell. I mean, you know, just his on ball
- 2:38Speaker 2: defense and he's a shell of of himself. Offensively, I
- 2:42Speaker 2: mean he is really you know, gutting it out and hit.
- 2:47Speaker 2: The courage that he has showed I think has been
- 2:49Speaker 2: inspiring for the group. Guys like Jayden Ross too. Just
- 2:53Speaker 2: the defense that that he's able to play on the perimeter.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I thought that that's obviously those were game changers up
- 3:01Speaker 2: front for Zeck.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Zach Wrazilla, Nework post Dan with Tarris. You know, he's
- 3:07Speaker 5: had games obviously where he's been incredible during the season,
- 3:10Speaker 5: you know, so when they were beat when you guys
- 3:12Speaker 5: beat Saint John's, but the consistency that you've seen in
- 3:16Speaker 5: these five and then he's making free throws, Like what
- 3:19Speaker 5: do you what do you point to of why he
- 3:21Speaker 5: all of a sudden now it's every game he's bringing it.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think you know, these these players that
- 3:28Speaker 2: have careers and you just it's why you kind of
- 3:31Speaker 2: never give up on a player, you know, you stick
- 3:33Speaker 2: with a player. You stick with a player because of
- 3:36Speaker 2: the characteristics that he has. Obviously he's got enormous talent,
- 3:39Speaker 2: but he's a man of great character. He's a man
- 3:42Speaker 2: of great faith, he's got great work habits. Uh, you know,
- 3:45Speaker 2: he's a very humble person. Uh, he's in Uh, he's
- 3:48Speaker 2: just a great, great young man. So, uh, we've all
- 3:53Speaker 2: just been waiting for this from him, and uh, this
- 3:56Speaker 2: version of him, which you know, this version of him
- 3:59Speaker 2: is one of the best players in this tournament, one
- 4:01Speaker 2: of the best players left in this tournament. He's played
- 4:03Speaker 2: as well as anyone has played in this tournament. And
- 4:06Speaker 2: it's all we've ever wanted for him. Hasn't been, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: been an easy process, you know, when to get him there,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you know, but he's there now, and hopefully this is
- 4:17Speaker 2: the player he is for the rest of his basketball life.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Third row center. You have a audio Joseph CBS Sports.
- 4:24Speaker 4: You have a team that averages fifteen cissis a game.
- 4:27Speaker 4: You have four playmakers on that Illinois team. You hold
- 4:30Speaker 4: him to three assists. Is that some sort of coaching
- 4:33Speaker 4: strategy that you were deploying about preventing extra passes or
- 4:36Speaker 4: was that just the nature of them missing a lot
- 4:38Speaker 4: of threes.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I think a lot of that has to do with
- 4:41Speaker 2: how we guard. And again, you know, like we both
- 4:44Speaker 2: could have made more shots. We'll both go back and
- 4:47Speaker 2: look at the game, you know, and see the missed opportunities,
- 4:51Speaker 2: you know. But for us, it's very important for our
- 4:53Speaker 2: players in one on one situations to be able to
- 4:59Speaker 2: hold up on an island like a cornerback, uh, you
- 5:03Speaker 2: know in football that plays a lot of man coverage,
- 5:06Speaker 2: because we do want to try to, you know, take
- 5:08Speaker 2: the three point line away from you know, players like
- 5:11Speaker 2: Davis Uh, you know, in this game, try to limit
- 5:14Speaker 2: Wagler to the tough contested off the dribble ones. You know,
- 5:19Speaker 2: Ben is an excellent three point shooter. We were willing
- 5:23Speaker 2: to live with uh Mrkovic h and Eva's Izovich uh
- 5:29Speaker 2: like kind of stunt them, you know, because they were
- 5:31Speaker 2: you know, thirty percent free throw shooters. So we picked
- 5:34Speaker 2: our poison with some of the guys that we were willing,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, to let shoot the.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Three on the right side towards the back.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Coach Justin Williams from the Athletic late in the game,
- 5:43Speaker 4: it was kind of the opposite of the Duke game
- 5:45Speaker 4: where they're closing the gap.
- 5:46Speaker 5: What was your message in the huddle to kind of
- 5:48Speaker 5: keep your guys composure.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I mean, we were I thought we were just getting
- 5:51Speaker 2: great shots. I mean we were. We were getting great
- 5:54Speaker 2: shots the whole way through, and that's not easy. You know.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I thought we were able to execute to get good
- 5:59Speaker 2: looks all over the you know, like we had a
- 6:02Speaker 2: great process, you know, the way we were going about
- 6:05Speaker 2: you know, our offensive execution, the efforts we were making defensively.
- 6:10Speaker 2: You know, I just thought we had a great process
- 6:12Speaker 2: and we're going about things the right way. So you
- 6:14Speaker 2: just you know, when you're doing that as a team
- 6:16Speaker 2: and you're just not making the shots, you just you know, hey, listen,
- 6:20Speaker 2: if we get stops and rebound the ball and don't
- 6:22Speaker 2: turn it over, we're gonna keep getting great shots. And
- 6:24Speaker 2: you know, we're doing to make a couple. And we've
- 6:26Speaker 2: been in games like this the whole year. You know,
- 6:28Speaker 2: the year hasn't been a joy ride. We haven't been
- 6:30Speaker 2: a machine of destruction. We've been a team that's had
- 6:33Speaker 2: to kind of grind out games like this. So we're
- 6:35Speaker 2: we're comfortable in a possession game like that,
