- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, October 11 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this feast Monsignor William R. Kelly writes, The Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the first ages of the church the day sacred to our Blessed Lady under her great title of Mother of God was January 1.
- 0:41Evident traces of this devotion remain in the liturgy proper to the feast of the circumcision which is now kept on that day. Many churches having petitioned for a special festival in honor of Our Lady's Divine Maternity, a day usually in the month of October, was granted by the Holy See for its celebration. By a decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, 04/24/1914, the October 11 was assigned. Pius XI raised it to a double of the second class and extended it to the universal church. All Catholics believe that Mary is the Mother of God.
- 1:34This does not mean that she is not a creature of God nor that God did not exist before she was created. It means that he who was her son was a divine person. In Christ there are two natures, the nature of God and the nature of man. But in him there is only one person, a divine person, the second person of the Blessed Trinity. Hence all that may be predicated of either nature may with propriety be said of the Saviour in the concrete form without distinguishing the two natures.
- 2:21So we may say that God was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We then refer to the person of the Son of God who is both God and man. Christ who is God was born according to his human nature of the Blessed Virgin. She is therefore truly the Mother of God. Commemorated today is the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost.
- 2:55Of this day, Dom Gaspar Lefebvre writes, this Sunday's mass makes us own that our misfortunes are caused by our unfaithfulness in conforming to the divine will as relayed in the introit in the epistle. Therefore in the same way as the people of Israel when in exile lamented their sins and prayed that God's mercy should be manifested in their favor, as in the introit in the offertory, so the Christian people ask the Lord, through the prayers of his spouse, the church, to pardon their sins so that they may serve him with a tranquil heart which we pray for in the collect by always obeying his commandments as we pray in the post communion. All filled with the Holy Ghost who must fix our attention during the season following Pentecost are gathered together in the temple and take a part in the ceremonies of worship as mentioned in the epistle. They raise to the Lord their eyes full of hope and sing canticles to his glory as in the gradual and the alleluia verse. For in him alone do they put their trust as relayed in the communion verse.
- 4:33Like the king's ruler of whom the gospel speaks, they persevere with faith in their prayer and as he obtained the healing of his dying son so do they obtain it for their souls, to which God applies the heavenly remedies which purify them from all stain, which the priest prays for in the secret prayer. Let us join with faith in the prayer of the church that God, appeased thereby, may pardon us, purify us, and grant us to serve him with confidence. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit.
- 5:31Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel. Oh, sing unto the Lord a new song, for he hath done marvellous things. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel.
- 6:18The Collect. Let us pray. O God, who was pleased that at the message of an angel, thy word should take flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant to us thy suppliance that we, who believe her to be truly the mother of God, may be helped by her intercession with thee, through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost.
- 7:06Be appeased, O Lord, we beseech thee, and bestow pardon and peace upon thy faithful people, so that our sins being forgiven us in quietness of mind, we may give ourselves to thy service through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach. No vine ever yielded fruit so fragrant. The enjoyment of honor and riches is the fruit I bear.
- 7:55It is I that give birth to all noble loving, all reverence, all true knowledge in the holy gift of hope. From me comes every grace of faithful observance. From me all promise of life and vigor. Hither turn your steps, all you that have learned to long for me. Take your fill of the increase I yield.
- 8:28Never was honey so sweet as the influence I inspire. Never honeycomb as the gift I bring. Mine is a renowned that endures age after age. Eat of this fruit and you will yet hunger for more. Drink of this wine and your thirst for it is still unquenched.
- 8:58He who listens to me will never be disappointed. He who lives by me will do no wrong. He who reads my lesson aright will find in it life eternal. The gradual. A shoot is to rise from the stock of Jesse.
- 9:26Out of his roots, a flower shall spring. This shall be one upon whom the spirit of the Lord will rest. Alleluia. Alleluia. Virgin mother of God, he whom the entire world cannot hold enclosed himself within thy womb and was made man.
- 9:51Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time, when they set about their return home, the boy Jesus, unknown to his parents, continued his stay in Jerusalem. And they, thinking that he was among their traveling companions, had gone a whole day's journey before they made inquiry for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances. When they could not find him, they made their way back to Jerusalem in search of him.
- 10:34And it was only after three days that they found him. He was sitting in the temple in the midst of those who taught there, listening to them, and asking them questions. And all those who heard him were in amazement at his quick understanding, and at the answers he gave. Seeing him there, they were full of wonder. And his mother said to him, My son, why hast thou treated us so?
- 11:11Think what anguish of mind thy father and I have endured searching for thee. But he asked them, What reason had you to search for me? Could you not tell that I must needs be in the place which belongs to my father? These words which he spoke to them were beyond their understanding. But he went down with them on their journey to Nazareth, and lived there in subjugation to them.
- 11:46The Offertory When his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, she was found to be with child by the power of the Holy Ghost. The secret, by thy gracious mercy, O Lord, and the intercession of Blessed Mary ever Virgin, Mother of thine only begotten Son, may this offering be of avail to us for welfare and peace now and for evermore through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost. May these mysteries we beseech thee, O Lord, bring us from heaven a healing medicine, and may they root out all vice from our hearts through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 13:12Amen. The Preface of Our Lady. It is truly meat and just, right and for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the festivity of Blessed Mary ever Virgin, who also conceived thine only begotten Son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost and the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the Blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it.
- 14:18Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 14:49Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Blessed be the womb in which the Virgin Mary bore the Son of the eternal Father. The Post Communion. Let us pray.
- 15:11May this communion, O Lord, cleanse us from all sin and through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, make us sharers of the heavenly remedy. Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of the twentieth Sunday after Pentecost. In order, O Lord, that we may become worthy of receiving the gift of Thine adorable sacrament, make us be at all times observant of thy commandments through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 16:17Amen. The Last Gospel. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John. At that time a nobleman whose son was lying sick at Capernaum, hearing that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son who was at the point of death. Jesus said to him, you must see signs and miracles happen or you will not believe.
- 16:59Sir, the nobleman said to him, come down before my child dies. Go back home, Jesus told him. Thy son is to live. And the man began his journey home, putting his trust in the words Jesus had spoken to him. And while he was on his way down, his servants met him with the message that his son was still alive.
- 17:33So he asked what time it had been when he felt easier and they told him he recovered from his fever yesterday at the seventh hour. The father recognized that it had happened at the very time when Jesus said to him, thy son is to live. And he and all his household found faith. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
