- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean. Here it is.
- 0:14Monday is the 28th of August and how fantastic that you have
- 0:20clicked on play and you and I are going to begin our weeks
- 0:23together as we continue reading through the book of Isaiah.
- 0:27We are going to read another 11 chapters of Isaiah and then we
- 0:31are going to put that big old book down and we're going to
- 0:35jump into the New Testament and read through ACT, which will be
- 0:39fantastic as it always is. But that is in another 2 1/2
- 0:43weeks time. Today, if you recall at the end
- 0:46of last week, we were reading about Isaiah warning his people
- 0:51about the Assyrians bearing down on them.
- 0:54Well, we are picking up where we left off there, and he will
- 0:57continue to tell them about what's happening and that it's
- 1:01going to be okay because as history tells us, God will
- 1:05destroy all 185,000 Assyrian soldiers who are surrounding
- 1:11them. But they don't quite know this
- 1:12yet. And in this chapter you were
- 1:14going to hear the word Ariel. And no, this is not Isaiah
- 1:18foreshadowing The Little Mermaid in all of its Disney glory and,
- 1:23well, not such great gender politics in 2023 watching it.
- 1:28Not that I've watched it recently, but if I did, that
- 1:30would be okay, because it's a classic.
- 1:31And I Yeah, enough about me and The Little Mermaid.
- 1:34Ariel is actually one of the poetic names for Jerusalem.
- 1:38So when we talk about Ariel, we're actually talking about
- 1:41Jerusalem. So all of that said, let us read
- 1:45together to hear the words of Isaiah speaking to these people
- 1:50in the midst of a giant enemy bearing down on their doorstep
- 1:53as we read together. Isaiah, Chapter 29.
- 2:06What sorrow awaits Ariel, the city of David?
- 2:10Year after year you celebrate your feasts, yet I will bring
- 2:15disaster upon you. And there will be much weeping
- 2:18and sorrow for Jerusalem will become what her name, Ariel,
- 2:22means, an altar covered with blood.
- 2:27I will be your enemy. Surrounding Jerusalem and
- 2:30attacking its walls, I will build siege towers and destroy
- 2:34it. Then, deep from the earth, you
- 2:37will speak from low in the dust. Your words will come.
- 2:42Your voice will whisper from the ground like a ghost conjured up
- 2:46from the grave. But suddenly your ruthless
- 2:50enemies will be crushed like the finest of dust.
- 2:53Your many attackers will be driven away like chaff before
- 2:57the wind. Suddenly, in an instant, I, the
- 3:01Lord of Heaven's armies will act for you with Thunder and
- 3:06earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and storm and
- 3:10consuming fire, all the nations fighting against Jerusalem will
- 3:15vanish like a dream. Those who were attacking her
- 3:19walls will vanish like a vision in the night.
- 3:23A hungry person dreams of eating, but wakes up still
- 3:26hungry. A thirsty person dreams of
- 3:28drinking, but is still faint from thirst.
- 3:32When morning comes, so it will be with your enemies, with those
- 3:36who attack Mount Zion. Are you amazed and incredulous?
- 3:40Don't you believe it? Then go ahead and be blind.
- 3:44You are stupid, but not from wine you stagger, but not from
- 3:49liquor. For the Lord has poured out on
- 3:52you a spirit of deep sleep. He has closed the eyes of your
- 3:56prophets and visionaries. All the future events in this
- 4:00vision are like a sealed book to them.
- 4:03When you give it to those who can read, they will say we can't
- 4:07read it because it's sealed. When you give it to those who
- 4:10cannot read, they will say we don't know how to read.
- 4:14And so the Lord says, These people say they are mine.
- 4:18They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from
- 4:22me, and their worship of me is nothing but manmade rules
- 4:26learned by rote. Because of this, I will once
- 4:30again astound these hypocrites with amazing wonders.
- 4:34The wisdom of the wise will pass away, and the intelligence of
- 4:38the intelligent will disappear. What sorrow awaits those who try
- 4:43to hide their plans from the Lord who do their evil deeds in
- 4:47the dark? The Lord can't see us, They say.
- 4:51He doesn't know what's going on. How foolish can you be?
- 4:55He is the Potter, and he is certainly greater than you.
- 4:59The clay should the created thing say of the one who made
- 5:04it, He didn't make me. Does a jar ever say?
- 5:08The Potter who made me is stupid.
- 5:11Soon, and it will not be very long, the forests of Lebanon
- 5:15will become a fertile field, and the fertile field will yield
- 5:21bountiful crops. In that day the deaf will hear
- 5:25words read from a book, and the blind will see through the gloom
- 5:29and darkness. The humble will be filled with
- 5:32fresh joy from the Lord. The poor will rejoice in the
- 5:37holy One of Israel. The scoffer will be gone.
- 5:40The arrogant will disappear and those who plot evil will be
- 5:44killed. Those who convict the innocent
- 5:47by their false testimonies will disappear.
- 5:51A similar fate awaits those who use trickery to pervert justice
- 5:55and who tell lies to destroy the innocent.
- 5:58That is why the Lord who redeemed Abraham says to the
- 6:02people of Israel, My people will no longer be ashamed or turned
- 6:07pale with fear. For when they see their many
- 6:10children and all the blessings I have given them, they will
- 6:14recognize the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob.
- 6:18They will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
- 6:22Then the wayward will gain understanding and complainers
- 6:26will accept instruction. Nothing gets past you thought.
- 6:40You know us inside and out. You know what awaits us.
- 6:44You know what has befallen us, and you are a part of it all.
- 6:51We just praise you, our glorious father.
- 6:56You are a majestic, all knowing God and we love you.
- 7:01Thank you that even though you know us and all of our faults
- 7:04and foibles, you love us nonetheless and we love you and
- 7:10we worship you, and it's in your name that we pray Jesus.
- 7:14Amen.
