- 0:00Speaker 1: For sure, and if it's Vic versus Squid, I'm a
- 0:04Speaker 1: little scared for Vic unless Victor has a.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Car, in which case Squidy screwed.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Because if there's one thing that we've learned from this
- 0:11Speaker 1: show is that if Vic has a car, it's gonna
- 0:14Speaker 1: crash and it's gonna mess up someone's day. Hello, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: welcome to May the Review be with you? With Nick
- 0:20Speaker 1: and Joe. I'm Joe Nick, and today we are doing
- 0:25Speaker 1: a mid season review of The Penguin HBO. Max is
- 0:30Speaker 1: the Penguin, Colin Ferrell's The Penguin, and we just concluded
- 0:34Speaker 1: with episode five Homecoming. We couldn't wait to do a
- 0:40Speaker 1: review of this. Honestly, we probably would have waited until
- 0:43Speaker 1: we got to the ending, but considering how wild this
- 0:47Speaker 1: show is, we just want to get out here and
- 0:49Speaker 1: express our thoughts right now.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Nick, you actually just saw the episode. How are you
- 0:54Speaker 2: feeling after it?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Totally insane. I've got like a ridiculous amount of notes
- 0:59Speaker 3: from the Homecoming episode. I mean, this is We're not
- 1:02Speaker 3: gonna get to all this. These are just thoughts, right
- 1:04Speaker 3: and things talk about.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We're gonna be guiding this conversation, but I'm just going
- 1:06Speaker 2: on memory at.
- 1:07Speaker 3: This point insane. I mean, episode four was insane right right.
- 1:12Speaker 3: In the end of episode four, Sophia essentially gases the
- 1:14Speaker 3: whole Falcone family and keeps one person a lot, well,
- 1:17Speaker 3: keeps two people alive, the daughter and then the and Betty,
- 1:20Speaker 3: which we'll get to, uh and then like so that
- 1:23Speaker 3: ends on like an insane ending, right, she just like
- 1:26Speaker 3: kills everyone. And episode five basically doesn't slow down.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Really.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Penguin gets his hands dirty a bunch, which is which
- 1:35Speaker 3: was totally I was a little bit shocked about, to
- 1:36Speaker 3: be honest, even though I guess I shouldn't have been.
- 1:38Speaker 3: But anyway, this show does not have a bad episode.
- 1:43Speaker 3: This show is high octane and awesome.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It has not let go of the tension since episode one.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Since the first scene of episode one with Alberto and
- 1:58Speaker 1: oz it is, it has just been NonStop fun. I
- 2:02Speaker 1: think we briefly described our feelings on the first episode
- 2:06Speaker 1: in one of our previous casts, and basically the way
- 2:10Speaker 1: I went into the show was I didn't have very
- 2:13Speaker 1: high expectations and it blew me away, and it has
- 2:15Speaker 1: continued to blow me away every episode. The last one Homecoming,
- 2:20Speaker 1: We're about to get into it. There were moments where
- 2:23Speaker 1: I was basically just like watching it like this because
- 2:26Speaker 1: I was so I was so sure like something horrible,
- 2:29Speaker 1: another horrible shoe was about to drop at any given moment.
- 2:32Speaker 2: You know, it is.
- 2:35Speaker 1: It has been so much more fun and interesting and
- 2:38Speaker 1: will thought out that I ever ever thought it was
- 2:40Speaker 1: going to be. It is probably my favorite show on
- 2:43Speaker 1: television right now.
- 2:45Speaker 3: It's hard to disagree that, is it is? It is
- 2:48Speaker 3: really really really well done. Yeah, it's hard to pick
- 2:53Speaker 3: another show on TV right now that's better. There's some
- 2:55Speaker 3: that are that are also doing really well, and I
- 2:58Speaker 3: think I thought All Along as one of those. But man,
- 3:01Speaker 3: there's just something like really cool and dark and different
- 3:04Speaker 3: about the Penguin right cause it's just there's no heroes. Man,
- 3:09Speaker 3: it's all villain on villain on villain. Which villain do
- 3:12Speaker 3: you like better? Are you picking the right villain to
- 3:15Speaker 3: come out on top? There ain't no heroes, There ain't
- 3:17Speaker 3: no Batman.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It's always funny.
- 3:21Speaker 1: The showrunners basically see Milliot's character as like the closest
- 3:25Speaker 1: thing to a hero right in this show, and like
- 3:28Speaker 1: she's the most terrifying character easily.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Yeah, it's so interesting because like the show is called
- 3:35Speaker 3: the Penguin, right, and so for all intents and purposes,
- 3:38Speaker 3: like the main character is Oswald cobble Pot or the Penguin,
- 3:42Speaker 3: but Sophia Falcone or as we got in this episode,
- 3:47Speaker 3: GIANTI I think, is what her her name is Gigante.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Excuse me, Gigante. Sophia Gigante is pretty much right up
- 3:55Speaker 3: there with the main character. Like, it would be hard
- 3:58Speaker 3: for me to tell you that the penguin is the
- 4:00Speaker 3: main character and everyone else is supporting, because really it's
- 4:03Speaker 3: the penguin and Sofia are the main characters driving the show.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And I mean, if you had to pick a hero
- 4:09Speaker 3: esque character, I guess it's Sofia. But she is, just,
- 4:12Speaker 3: like you said, the worst one. So I don't know.
- 4:15Speaker 3: There ain't no heroes, That's all I'm saying.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Ain't no heroes, Ain't no heroes.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Episode five Homecoming, Let's just get into it right here.
- 4:25Speaker 2: This is where we're vibing.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It pretty much picks up with what you were saying, Nick,
- 4:31Speaker 1: Sophia has had a carbon monoxide leak in the house
- 4:36Speaker 1: and it's basically killed virtually the entire Falcone family except
- 4:40Speaker 1: for Johnny Vetti, which she has some strategic points that
- 4:43Speaker 1: she's going to use him for, not before a lot
- 4:46Speaker 1: of torture, which that scene in and of itself was
- 4:50Speaker 1: very interesting. We know Oz is getting ready to make
- 4:53Speaker 1: his move on the Marconi's and get his mushrooms back.
- 4:58Speaker 1: He makes a play on stealing the sun and there's
- 5:01Speaker 1: an exchange that goes horrifically nightmarish for everything, for everyone. Ultimately,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I feel like this episode it's very properly titled his homecoming,
- 5:12Speaker 1: with of course Oz ending up like in his family
- 5:15Speaker 1: roots thanks to Victor smuggling his mom back to the
- 5:18Speaker 1: Crown point, right, But it's kind of like a it's
- 5:22Speaker 1: a reset of the game board, right at least for
- 5:25Speaker 1: the war that's about to happen, you know, like the
- 5:27Speaker 1: pieces are all being realigned, and like there's like a
- 5:30Speaker 1: new like line in the sand that's being drawn for
- 5:33Speaker 1: like the upcoming fight.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah that's a great Yeah, that's a great way to
- 5:38Speaker 3: kind of summarize everything. It's a reset of the board,
- 5:40Speaker 3: right because now we've got Sophia and kind of going
- 5:44Speaker 3: to see the last marony, like sal who is an
- 5:48Speaker 3: escaped from prison now randomly but his family's dead so
- 5:52Speaker 3: it's like sal Maroni and Sophia Gigante now basically teaming
- 6:00Speaker 3: up after their families were, you know, going at it
- 6:03Speaker 3: for decades. But now they're teaming up, and their common
- 6:07Speaker 3: enemy is Oswald Cobbapot, the penguin, who has seemingly returned
- 6:11Speaker 3: home as you alluded to, and has found his new
- 6:14Speaker 3: layer in the trolley station underneath Gotham.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Basically, I kind of want to jump straight to the end. Actually,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I mean, there are plenty of other things I want
- 6:25Speaker 1: to talk about, but so I get such big I
- 6:31Speaker 1: think it's oh, shoot, now I'm trying to remember the
- 6:34Speaker 1: exact thing. Yeah, okay, I get such big Batman return
- 6:39Speaker 1: vibes from the end of this episode. Nice, Right, Like
- 6:44Speaker 1: we talked about the Danny DeVito penguin the last time
- 6:47Speaker 1: we were talking about the penguin, and I think there's
- 6:51Speaker 1: a clip in that episode if you go back, and
- 6:53Speaker 1: it's it's Danny DeVito, you know, screaming.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Like I Am not a human thing, and.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Like he's like in his like penguin layer. Right, that's
- 7:04Speaker 1: like underneath the city, and the trolley station that they're
- 7:09Speaker 1: in looks so much like that, even with like the
- 7:12Speaker 1: puddles of water that are scattered about that look like
- 7:15Speaker 1: the pools for the penguins that are swimming in and
- 7:17Speaker 1: out of his layer. It looks so much like that.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And also I don't know, I get like hardcore Batman
- 7:25Speaker 1: and Robin vibes from Victor in Oz, like they're kind
- 7:30Speaker 1: of an inversion.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Of Batman and Robin.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah, now we have like the tunnels that Batman and
- 7:34Speaker 1: Robin used to like get in and out of the city, right, right.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the relationship between Vic and Oswald have. It
- 7:43Speaker 3: has been such a fun like character development like throughout
- 7:47Speaker 3: the season, and especially for Vic. What a what a
- 7:52Speaker 3: big moment he had. I think it was two episodes ago,
- 7:55Speaker 3: right where he was about to flee and leave the city, right,
- 7:57Speaker 3: and then he made this decision at the bus station
- 8:01Speaker 3: that he couldn't leave Oz and then high tails it
- 8:05Speaker 3: out of there and then ends up saving Oz and
- 8:08Speaker 3: Sofia from essentially being murdered and ambushed, right, and then
- 8:11Speaker 3: that leads us to this whole crazy Sophia development. And
- 8:16Speaker 3: then now with what happened today or you know, with
- 8:18Speaker 3: this episode with the penguin and Victor and everything else
- 8:21Speaker 3: that unfolded but the relationship between them very Batman and
- 8:25Speaker 3: Robin esque, but just of course on the dark side
- 8:27Speaker 3: of it, on the villain side. And so yeah, I'm
- 8:32Speaker 3: assuming Penguin's just gonna like raise up an army from
- 8:34Speaker 3: the depths of destruction from this flood, you know, and
- 8:40Speaker 3: massive all these you know, You've got a whole nother
- 8:43Speaker 3: sector of Gotham that was like kind of like Vick
- 8:46Speaker 3: was saying, like nobody comes here. Everyone's like written this
- 8:49Speaker 3: part of Gotham off right, but there's we clearly see
- 8:52Speaker 3: that there's still crime in that area, and there's still
- 8:55Speaker 3: a bunch of people just like waiting for their own
- 8:58Speaker 3: moment to shine. And I the Penguin is the perfect,
- 9:02Speaker 3: the perfect villain and leader for that kind of a
- 9:05Speaker 3: broken down section of Gotham. So I imagine he's going
- 9:09Speaker 3: to like rally the troops in that area.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I think you're exactly right, because I was wondering, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: as as Sophia is merging the Gigante and the Marony family,
- 9:21Speaker 1: I think it said Marconi earlier.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Thank you for correcting me.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Did Marconi?
- 9:27Speaker 2: I think I did?
- 9:29Speaker 1: We have like friends in Chicago who are the Marconi's.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I think I inserted them into this show. But yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 1: the Maronis. She she's merging the two families, and based
- 9:42Speaker 1: on the previews for the next episode, it looks like
- 9:43Speaker 1: she's also banking on the support of like the Triad
- 9:46Speaker 1: as well. Uh So, like that left me thinking, like, well,
- 9:50Speaker 1: like what support could like Oz possibly rally right? And
- 9:54Speaker 1: I think you just nailed it. You know, we know
- 9:56Speaker 1: Oz has come back to Crown Point. We found out
- 9:59Speaker 1: that this is this is where he was from, right,
- 10:02Speaker 1: and we know from the beginning of this of this
- 10:06Speaker 1: show that there is there was a respected mobster in
- 10:09Speaker 1: that neighborhood that he admired that he wants to be. Right.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He even referenced him again in this episode with like
- 10:18Speaker 1: the chariot that he'd like drive around in throughout the neighborhood.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So I think that's that's what Oz is going to
- 10:23Speaker 1: become for Crown Point. He's going to become this like
- 10:26Speaker 1: respected guy and like Vic might even be like the
- 10:29Speaker 1: liaison for like, since Oz had been gone for so
- 10:32Speaker 1: long from Crownpoint and maybe Vic is well known enough
- 10:36Speaker 1: to like act as a bridge. I don't know, there's
- 10:38Speaker 1: something happening going to happen with that Squid character. Yeah,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and I'm so scared to see what it's gonna be.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Vic's like last stepping stone into becoming a true villain
- 10:51Speaker 3: is to probably get his revenge in a gruesome way
- 10:56Speaker 3: on this Squid character that he's like scared of. Right, Like,
- 11:00Speaker 3: Vic has had this crazy character arc where he, you know,
- 11:05Speaker 3: was just like a kid trying to make a couple
- 11:08Speaker 3: bucks so that he could survive after his family gets
- 11:10Speaker 3: completely wiped out from this you know, terrible tragedy and
- 11:13Speaker 3: Gotham hanging her out with the wrong crowd, and he
- 11:17Speaker 3: gets like saved by Penguin basically brought under his wing,
- 11:22Speaker 3: and then has these internal struggle like, oh do I
- 11:25Speaker 3: want to do this? Is this right? Can I? Can
- 11:27Speaker 3: I just fully and leave Gotham? And Penguin essentially lets
- 11:29Speaker 3: him make a choice and lets him go, and then
- 11:31Speaker 3: he decides not to go, and he's just like, well,
- 11:33Speaker 3: now you're in it, and he says it in this
- 11:35Speaker 3: episode he's like I'm all in. It's like okay, well
- 11:40Speaker 3: you still have this. He still has this major development
- 11:45Speaker 3: that he needs, which is, you know, if you want
- 11:49Speaker 3: to be a bad guy, you got to get your
- 11:50Speaker 3: hands dirty and more dirty. Than you already have. Right,
- 11:52Speaker 3: he hasn't really nothing too. I mean he's gotten, he's
- 11:57Speaker 3: got his fair share of like illegal things he's done,
- 11:59Speaker 3: but you know, getting some revenges is like a level
- 12:04Speaker 3: of villainship that he has to earn, and I think
- 12:06Speaker 3: we're gonna get that at some point in the next
- 12:08Speaker 3: couple episodes for sure.
- 12:10Speaker 1: And if it's Vic versus Squid, I'm a little scared
- 12:13Speaker 1: for Vic unless Victor has a car, in which case
- 12:17Speaker 1: Squid is screwed. Because if there's one thing that we've
- 12:19Speaker 1: learned from this show is that if Vic has a car,
- 12:22Speaker 1: it's gonna crash and it's gonna mess up someone's day.
- 12:29Speaker 2: He just got killed by a day. Wo Lanos, motherfuck up?
- 12:33Speaker 2: How you like me now?
- 12:34Speaker 1: Huh?
- 12:35Speaker 3: Yeah, he is very good at crashing vehicles.
- 12:39Speaker 2: He's so good at it.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, go ahead.
- 12:45Speaker 1: But yeah, I love that prediction on Vic. I think
- 12:49Speaker 1: we were both scared for Victor at the start of
- 12:52Speaker 1: this show that ultimately we will probably see him die
- 12:56Speaker 1: as a result of Oz's ambitions. I still think there's
- 12:59Speaker 1: a aussibility that that could happen, but I'm feeling much more.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I feel like there's there's now a route where Vic
- 13:08Speaker 1: comes out okay in this well, maybe not unscathed, but
- 13:12Speaker 1: alive at least.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I think there's a route where he comes out alive,
- 13:16Speaker 3: but he's not gonna be He'll be finally like fully
- 13:19Speaker 3: transitioned to the dark side. If you will, Yeah, full mobster,
- 13:24Speaker 3: full mobster in the penguin world, a made man in
- 13:26Speaker 3: Penguin's uh in Penguin's leadership, if you will, can we
- 13:33Speaker 3: can we talk about two things, two scenes, oh please,
- 13:37Speaker 3: One from Sophia and one from the Penguin. So there's
- 13:40Speaker 3: the scene where Sophia had you know, of course, there's
- 13:43Speaker 3: a torture scene with with with with Vetty or VD
- 13:48Speaker 3: excuse me, Johnny D Johnny vid, which is like almost
- 13:53Speaker 3: looked like something out of Saw for a second, not
- 13:55Speaker 3: as bad, but close. Pretty much just torture. And he
- 14:00Speaker 3: tells her this story about her mother, which is like
- 14:04Speaker 3: super smart on his part because it really gets him
- 14:07Speaker 3: to the point where he might actually survive and not
- 14:11Speaker 3: be killed by Sophia. Right, he just has to accept
- 14:14Speaker 3: that she's the new boss.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Right, He's like playing into that.
- 14:18Speaker 3: He's playing into that. It's like, okay, good, this is
- 14:19Speaker 3: a smart move, like this is your only shot, dude, Like,
- 14:22Speaker 3: and then we transition, we get the net. We get
- 14:24Speaker 3: a quick scene where the doctor Julian from Arkham comes
- 14:28Speaker 3: to Sofia, and at first I thought he was wearing
- 14:30Speaker 3: a wire, but he's not wearing a wire. He's just
- 14:32Speaker 3: equally as insane and wants to be a part of
- 14:34Speaker 3: whatever she's building because.
- 14:35Speaker 2: He's just he's just so like high on her s shit.
- 14:39Speaker 2: He's like, yeah, he's.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Creepy and in love and he also was he became
- 14:45Speaker 3: insane by working at Arkham, clearly. But then we get
- 14:49Speaker 3: the scene where she's got the everyone who's left like
- 14:52Speaker 3: in the room and she's talking about, you know, the
- 14:55Speaker 3: Falcone family is dead and it's the Dagonte family now,
- 14:59Speaker 3: and and then Johnny Vitty opens his stupid mouth and
- 15:04Speaker 3: he's trying to like backwalk what she's saying about the
- 15:07Speaker 3: Felcones being gone and like like changing the name. And
- 15:10Speaker 3: I'm just like, oh, this guy, he's about to get
- 15:12Speaker 3: shot in the head. And sure enough she texts O
- 15:15Speaker 3: her fuck are good and just like it's like, okay, well,
- 15:18Speaker 3: I gave you an opportunity. He had one opportunity, and
- 15:22Speaker 3: I think she was going to give him one. She
- 15:24Speaker 3: was going to give him the chance to actually like
- 15:27Speaker 3: get in line, and he opened his stupid mouth and
- 15:30Speaker 3: he got shot right in the head. And everyone else
- 15:32Speaker 3: in the room loved what she had to say because
- 15:34Speaker 3: it was awesome. She's like, I'm going to share all
- 15:35Speaker 3: this with you, joined me perfect, why not? Like what
- 15:41Speaker 3: other choices do you have? So that scene was like insane, right,
- 15:46Speaker 3: Like Johnny Vitty, what an idiot he had it? He
- 15:49Speaker 3: was there, he was fine.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and like he it was had This was dumb
- 15:54Speaker 1: on his part for so many reasons, right, Like he
- 15:56Speaker 1: had already played like the last card that he had,
- 15:59Speaker 1: which was of the tagless money was right, and then
- 16:04Speaker 1: for him to like step on her toes, It's like,
- 16:06Speaker 1: do you not remember how dangerous this person is, dude.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I guess he thought, you know, he had the backing
- 16:13Speaker 1: of the rest of the gangsters at that point.
- 16:15Speaker 3: It is stupidity, perisipidity.
- 16:18Speaker 2: And then he bought them very quick.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Yeah. And then the other scene is Penguin. I love
- 16:24Speaker 3: how like every episode where we get some sort of
- 16:27Speaker 3: or at least for the most but we get some
- 16:28Speaker 3: sort of insight into how smart penguin actually is. But
- 16:32Speaker 3: then we also get a moment where even though he's
- 16:35Speaker 3: so smart, he can't possibly see all the outcomes and
- 16:39Speaker 3: he isn't prepared for everything. And like a perfect example
- 16:43Speaker 3: is this episode where he planned the whole like kidnapping
- 16:48Speaker 3: the Maroney Sun perfectly, bring me the mushrooms, I'm bringing
- 16:54Speaker 3: you your son. He knew he had the whole plan
- 16:58Speaker 3: to like cover him in gasoline and then I was
- 17:02Speaker 3: gonna light him on fire and kill the wife as well.
- 17:05Speaker 3: And simultaneously he's hired somebody in the prison to stab
- 17:08Speaker 3: Salvatormaroni to get rid of him as well. Right, so
- 17:12Speaker 3: he's got this whole plan and he's gonna get the
- 17:14Speaker 3: mushrooms back and all this stuff, and it's like, you
- 17:16Speaker 3: know what it actually, he's like, sounds pretty brilliant.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I actually verbally said out loud when he lit the
- 17:22Speaker 1: sun on fire.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I was like that was so smart.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Yeah, like very smart. And it's like and he's like,
- 17:29Speaker 3: it's like awesome. But we get this very smart move, right,
- 17:34Speaker 3: Like he's gonna get rid of him that family completely
- 17:36Speaker 3: and he's gonna slide right in and he's gonna have
- 17:38Speaker 3: all the mushrooms. What he doesn't see foresee is that
- 17:41Speaker 3: it could be an ambush, which it was, but they
- 17:44Speaker 3: were able to get out of it, so they closed
- 17:46Speaker 3: the garage door behind him, right, and they insulate him,
- 17:49Speaker 3: and he's not thinking about lighting people on fire in
- 17:52Speaker 3: a warehouse that might have some kind of extinguishing system,
- 17:56Speaker 3: which then ruins the mushrooms. So that's like penguin coming
- 18:00Speaker 3: up with a brilliant plan but not thinking of all
- 18:02Speaker 3: the possibilities of something going wrong. And then the other
- 18:05Speaker 3: scenario too, of well, what if the guard stabs Maroni
- 18:08Speaker 3: but he doesn't die, right.
- 18:11Speaker 2: It's a half measure.
- 18:11Speaker 3: It's a half measure, So that doesn't go well for
- 18:14Speaker 3: him either, right, So he he has like two buckets
- 18:17Speaker 3: of mushrooms left, Missus Marony and son are dead. Salvatore
- 18:22Speaker 3: escapes prison, so it's like half and half. Then he
- 18:28Speaker 3: gets you know, essentially screws him up because he has
- 18:31Speaker 3: to flee to Crown Point. And now Sophia is like
- 18:34Speaker 3: really on a on the up and up here with Salmaroni.
- 18:39Speaker 3: So really just kind of fascinating to see the smarts
- 18:43Speaker 3: of the penguin not always fully come.
- 18:46Speaker 1: To fruition that being said his mom. There, this is
- 18:52Speaker 1: a ticking time bomb, y yes, And I thought for
- 18:56Speaker 1: a moment today was going to be the day that
- 18:58Speaker 1: it explodes, and it was going to be with victim
- 19:00Speaker 1: and like she's gonna get everyone killed here.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I am.
- 19:06Speaker 1: This is an amazing performance of you know, a woman
- 19:09Speaker 1: with dementia, and it is terrifying and heartbreaking and at
- 19:15Speaker 1: times heartwarming. It's just overall just a part of this
- 19:20Speaker 1: show I don't think I was ever prepared for. And
- 19:23Speaker 1: how she's very like in a very Lady Macbeth way,
- 19:27Speaker 1: like pushing Oz like further and further into the darkness
- 19:31Speaker 1: of this city.
- 19:32Speaker 3: You know, I think I wrote down like she's insane
- 19:36Speaker 3: like five times in my notes, Like that long list
- 19:39Speaker 3: of notes is just like Oz missus cobbopot is crazy.
- 19:44Speaker 3: And part of it's because of the dementia, but the
- 19:46Speaker 3: other part of it is because she just is not
- 19:48Speaker 3: a good role model and she's clearly taught him all
- 19:52Speaker 3: the wrong things and she wants power just as much
- 19:55Speaker 3: as he does. Not that I'm complaining, And it's more
- 19:59Speaker 3: terrifying in ways, right because because of the dementia, so
- 20:01Speaker 3: you have just no idea what she does and doesn't
- 20:04Speaker 3: remember and what she will or will not do or
- 20:05Speaker 3: say in the moment. I was sure she was about
- 20:08Speaker 3: to blow the Vic's cover when they first got the
- 20:11Speaker 3: Crown Point. I was like, Oh my gosh, she's gonna
- 20:12Speaker 3: like yell at the Squid guy and it's gonna be
- 20:14Speaker 3: a whole thing right now. But somehow it wasn't. That's
- 20:19Speaker 3: for later, I guess.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yeah. I do think we've set up, you know, a little.
- 20:25Speaker 1: We've mentioned this before. It's a it's a mini like
- 20:28Speaker 1: like a secondary antagonist with Squid, which I don't think
- 20:32Speaker 1: we quite understand what the beef is there.
- 20:34Speaker 2: We know that his family didn't.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Like Squid and that he was like a shady character,
- 20:39Speaker 1: and obviously VIC is like really nervous around him. Bad dude, Right,
- 20:43Speaker 1: And maybe this is someone actually I wonder, I wonder
- 20:46Speaker 1: if this is someone who's like really risen in the.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Chaos of Crown Point since the flood.
- 20:51Speaker 3: For sure.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I think like this is who they're going to
- 20:54Speaker 1: have to take out to like gain this new army. Yeah.
- 20:56Speaker 3: I think you're one hundred percent correct, But that's a
- 20:58Speaker 3: great prediction. Like definitely see that him being the main
- 21:03Speaker 3: antagonist of the Crown Point area in regards to like
- 21:06Speaker 3: the penguin and Victo.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you know, considering this is absolutely where they're
- 21:14Speaker 1: going with this, Considering like Sophia and like Oz, they're
- 21:18Speaker 1: they're kind of two sides of the same coin. Like
- 21:20Speaker 1: Sophia's I wouldn't say she's amazing at planning either, she's
- 21:23Speaker 1: great at improvising as well, right, right, right, And they
- 21:27Speaker 1: they appeared like when they when they were teamed up,
- 21:30Speaker 1: you know, temporarily they were a great force to be
- 21:33Speaker 1: reckoned with, right, able to like play off of each
- 21:35Speaker 1: other's like improvisations. But like the big differences between them
- 21:40Speaker 1: was how how they see each other? Right, She's kind
- 21:45Speaker 1: of disgusted by Oz and like how you know, he's
- 21:48Speaker 1: he's lowly, he's poor, Like there's that classism between them,
- 21:54Speaker 1: and I think like in their character paths, like that
- 21:57Speaker 1: classism kind of defines like the trajectory of like the
- 22:00Speaker 1: rest of their story here. And I think we're making
- 22:04Speaker 1: some pretty good predictions with Oz, And I think the
- 22:06Speaker 1: thing that sells it for me is Sophia's the way
- 22:10Speaker 1: that she has purchased her army is by taking the
- 22:13Speaker 1: Falcone wealth and dividing it among like Gotham's like black
- 22:19Speaker 1: market elite, right among those who are already like pretty powerful,
- 22:24Speaker 1: whereas like Oz is probably gonna pull off like some
- 22:27Speaker 1: dark Robin hood stuff, you know.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, just yeah, He's he had the only chance
- 22:36Speaker 3: he has is to rally the crown point underworld, if
- 22:40Speaker 3: you will, then no one else is paying attention to
- 22:42Speaker 3: and then everyone's written off, which is the perfect it's
- 22:45Speaker 3: really the perfect compliment to to Oz and the penguin
- 22:49Speaker 3: and to what he is and where he came from. Right,
- 22:51Speaker 3: that's really the perfect army for him to raise. Right,
- 22:54Speaker 3: he was never going to have the respect of the
- 22:57Speaker 3: the black market like bosses, right.
- 23:00Speaker 2: So yeah, elites, elites think you Yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 3: So this is like this is shaping up to be
- 23:05Speaker 3: a really interesting last couple episodes here.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so too.
- 23:11Speaker 1: That being said, with the episodes that we've had so far,
- 23:14Speaker 1: what do you think has been the strongest episode?
- 23:17Speaker 2: Your favorite episode?
- 23:18Speaker 3: Oh man, it's a good question. I think my favorite
- 23:23Speaker 3: episode honestly was probably episode four so far, which is
- 23:26Speaker 3: the previous one, and that's just when Sophia, Like it
- 23:31Speaker 3: was really like a Sophia episode, right, Like we got
- 23:34Speaker 3: to see like her what happened to her after that
- 23:36Speaker 3: ambush from episode three where Vic like crashes the car
- 23:39Speaker 3: and like they get away. We really got some more
- 23:42Speaker 3: insight into Sophia's like like younger life and how she
- 23:47Speaker 3: got there, and then her character roc of like she
- 23:51Speaker 3: was not a murderer before, but Arkham basically made her one,
- 23:55Speaker 3: and then like at the end of episode four, she
- 23:59Speaker 3: just got is the entire family. This recent one five
- 24:02Speaker 3: homecoming was insane as well.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Episode four was probably the most It was the most interesting,
- 24:10Speaker 1: and it was kind of the most different too, with
- 24:13Speaker 1: them really playing with the lucidity of like of Sophia's
- 24:18Speaker 1: mind as she's deteriorating in Arkham, in particular when the
- 24:22Speaker 1: walls start coming literally the walls start coming down, and
- 24:26Speaker 1: like she starts imagining them as like the moment that
- 24:29Speaker 1: she discovered her mom in the bedroom and like she's
- 24:32Speaker 1: still like mentally like trapped there.
- 24:35Speaker 2: That episode is.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Really terrifying, super well done, Milliod, so good, so great,
- 24:43Speaker 1: And I was talking to a friend about this before
- 24:46Speaker 1: the show.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Anytime I learned her name.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Because of this show, anytime I saw this actress before,
- 24:53Speaker 1: it was always just oh, the mother from how I
- 24:54Speaker 1: met your mother. I never even would call her by
- 24:57Speaker 1: the character name. I would just say the mother, and yes,
- 25:02Speaker 1: it's Christi Biliodi. She's incredible, but I love Okay, so
- 25:08Speaker 1: real quick thing on, I had to do some learning
- 25:11Speaker 1: on this character in the comics. I realized I've read
- 25:13Speaker 1: about this character before and I didn't even remember. She's
- 25:17Speaker 1: in Batman The Long Halloween, which is a great story,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and she's she's a mammoth of a woman. She's huge,
- 25:26Speaker 1: and the show purposely went with an actress like Miliodi
- 25:29Speaker 1: who's very petite, and went against the comic, not the
- 25:35Speaker 1: comic origin, but like the comic depiction right in the comic,
- 25:40Speaker 1: like she is the Hangman, right, And they went with our,
- 25:45Speaker 1: at least for comic book people, like our idea of like,
- 25:49Speaker 1: oh yeah, she is the Hangman, and they played on that.
- 25:52Speaker 1: And we were doing the same thing as all the
- 25:54Speaker 1: rest of the characters in that show, right, we were
- 25:57Speaker 1: putting that on her even though she's not. But Gotham
- 26:01Speaker 1: molds her into becoming something darker and worse. Right, Yeah,
- 26:05Speaker 1: and despite the fact that she's not a large person,
- 26:09Speaker 1: I think the persona that she takes on is it's
- 26:13Speaker 1: monstrous right, it's this big monster. And that's when she
- 26:16Speaker 1: finally takes on the Jigante family name.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yeah, right, and it becomes more terrifying in that sense, right,
- 26:22Speaker 3: because like this unassuming woman, seemingly at least at the beginning,
- 26:27Speaker 3: becomes this larger than life, terrifying figure that, for all
- 26:32Speaker 3: intents and purposes is the equivalent of the comic book
- 26:35Speaker 3: version giants or whatever that you will, right, but just
- 26:39Speaker 3: the force of nature that she becomes, right, and she
- 26:41Speaker 3: like describes her mother as a force in this episode,
- 26:44Speaker 3: and she has become that force then probably times one
- 26:48Speaker 3: hundred in this case insane.
- 26:52Speaker 1: It's funny, right, Like it's almost like a self fulfilling
- 26:54Speaker 1: prophecy because you're right, Like, she's not that she's actually
- 26:58Speaker 1: like a seemingly like despite the fact that she's aware
- 27:02Speaker 1: that she comes from a crime ridden family and there's
- 27:04Speaker 1: probably blood on their hands, Like, she's relatively like a
- 27:07Speaker 1: good person at the beginning of all of this, and
- 27:10Speaker 1: they mold her into becoming you know, that which she
- 27:13Speaker 1: was supposed to take the fall for, right, Yeah, it's
- 27:17Speaker 1: just like a true like Gotham tragedy, yeah, right, Like truly,
- 27:23Speaker 1: like some of the best like Gotham tragedies like the
- 27:26Speaker 1: One Bad Day with the Joker, right, like that story.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I feel like this is comparable in a lot of
- 27:33Speaker 1: ways to that. So I'm so glad we got that
- 27:37Speaker 1: flashback episode that you were talking about in episode four,
- 27:40Speaker 1: and the way how it was presented as a flashback
- 27:43Speaker 1: was really cool, only for us to come to the
- 27:46Speaker 1: present for the last like fifteen minutes of the episode
- 27:49Speaker 1: and push the narrative forward by killing the whole Fealtone
- 27:52Speaker 1: family in the most not maybe not the most disturbing ways,
- 27:57Speaker 1: but like in a very like.
- 28:00Speaker 2: It blew me away.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I just didn't see that coming. Very scary, very cool.
- 28:06Speaker 1: What would you say is your favorite character arc of
- 28:08Speaker 1: this show?
- 28:10Speaker 3: It's tough to pick between Sophia and Vic, but I
- 28:15Speaker 3: think it's Vic. But we'll see how the next couple
- 28:19Speaker 3: episodes go. Like right now, I think it's it's Vic.
- 28:23Speaker 2: For me.
- 28:25Speaker 3: It's hard not to pick Sophia already though, Like if
- 28:27Speaker 3: the show is over now, it probably would be Sophia, right,
- 28:30Speaker 3: But we have a couple more episodes left and I
- 28:32Speaker 3: think that there's Yeah, I think we're gonna get a
- 28:34Speaker 3: lot more. We're gonna get like some final development for
- 28:37Speaker 3: Vis for VIC here in the next couple episodes. So
- 28:39Speaker 3: I'm kind of leaning towards him.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I'm right there with you, And it's exactly because of that,
- 28:43Speaker 1: because like it feels like we still have so much
- 28:45Speaker 1: more for.
- 28:46Speaker 2: VIC than I'm really excited about.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yeah. So, yeah, Sophia has become like the months there,
- 28:52Speaker 1: she's like, this is yeah, extremely impressive and insane.
- 28:57Speaker 3: But there's something really interesting about the VIC storyline.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Agree.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Yeah, So we'll see if he fully assumes the Robin
- 29:04Speaker 3: rule to Penguin here if you will here in the
- 29:06Speaker 3: next couple of episodes, he's he's got to kill some people.
- 29:10Speaker 1: What is like, so like, if a robin is the
- 29:13Speaker 1: sidekick to a batman, what is the sidekick to a penguin?
- 29:17Speaker 1: Is that like a I don't know, Is that like
- 29:19Speaker 1: a lamp ray?
- 29:20Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Oh God, I have no idea. What would be.
- 29:27Speaker 2: I don't know, Pasto the Penguin. We'll go with that.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Nick becomes Pesto Jesus. Okay, so we've got three more
- 29:37Speaker 1: episodes on Penguin. We will, of course have our final
- 29:40Speaker 1: review on that. We're very excited for all of it. However,
- 29:44Speaker 1: next time we're going back to our time travel draft, Nick,
- 29:48Speaker 1: what are we watching?
- 29:49Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, we are back finally with the time travel.
- 29:53Speaker 3: So the next category that we're doing is superhero time travel.
- 29:56Speaker 3: So Joe and I both picked a superhero movie that
- 30:00Speaker 3: has time travel in it, and Joe's pick was Darney Darko,
- 30:05Speaker 3: and he insisted a superhero film. We'll hear about that
- 30:07Speaker 3: next week, might as you will. My pick for superhero
- 30:10Speaker 3: film was X Men Days of Future Past and movie
- 30:15Speaker 3: definitively yes. But we're going with Joe's pick this time first.
- 30:20Speaker 3: So we're gonna watch Donny Darko, rewatch Donny Darko, and
- 30:23Speaker 3: then we're going to talk about the time travel aspect
- 30:25Speaker 3: primarily of that film next week, So tune in for that.
- 30:29Speaker 3: That'll be awesome. I can't wait for Joe to make
- 30:31Speaker 3: his case on the superhero aspect here of Danny Darko.
- 30:35Speaker 2: He's got won't I won't even have to.
- 30:38Speaker 1: You're gonna watch it and you're gonna be like, you're
- 30:39Speaker 1: gonna get to one scene, You're gonna be like, God,
- 30:41Speaker 1: damn it, so garingee it.
- 30:46Speaker 3: But that is what you're watching next week?
- 30:48Speaker 1: Yes, yes, So please join us next week and keep
