- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is Almost Famous podcast. We were sitting here today
- 0:08Speaker 2: with Bob, Trista and Joan. We have an incredible interview
- 0:13Speaker 2: for you. Who knows how long it goes, probably goes
- 0:15Speaker 2: quite a while. Okay, so obviously Bob and Trista host
- 0:19Speaker 2: the Almost Famous og which is just so much fun
- 0:23Speaker 2: to listen too. Tonight we have a whole group, the
- 0:26Speaker 2: whole Golden Bachelor cast is now here eating outside. Here's
- 0:34Speaker 2: the deal. I just want to say this for everybody. Well,
- 0:37Speaker 2: I've done this for seven years now, and I mean
- 0:41Speaker 2: was the Bachelor one point, so I got to do
- 0:43Speaker 2: some cool stuff. Bob, you can agree, Trista, you're the Bachelor.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I was nervous tonight because I've been such a fan
- 0:51Speaker 2: of the Golden Bachelor contestants.
- 0:53Speaker 3: So we have to Yeah, we were like.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I actually like like anxiously like excited because.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Because you were like I mean putting it out there
- 1:03Speaker 4: that you were like I want to host this show.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I had to have lunch with Jesse a week and
- 1:06Speaker 2: after to apologize you did well because I was like, dude,
- 1:09Speaker 2: I wasn't trying to take your job. I just didn't
- 1:11Speaker 2: think you wanted it, Like I didn't. I mean, college football,
- 1:14Speaker 2: How are you going to do college football with a
- 1:15Speaker 2: bachelor season? Like I thought the job was wide open,
- 1:19Speaker 2: regular yeah, like how are you doing all the time?
- 1:23Speaker 2: So I was like, man, I only thought that this
- 1:26Speaker 2: was not a thing you wanted. And I was like, yeah,
- 1:29Speaker 2: if there's an open seat, please consider me, because I
- 1:33Speaker 2: think this show is going to be a hit, which yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 2: it is, it is. I wasn't wrong, It's right, it's
- 1:40Speaker 2: been a hit.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Oh, I've said the same thing. I say.
- 1:42Speaker 3: So this is my big thing has been and this
- 1:45Speaker 3: is I've said this since day one. Age appropriate casting are.
- 1:50Speaker 3: My biggest fear of this show was that they were
- 1:53Speaker 3: going to have seventy year old Gary and they were
- 1:55Speaker 3: going to cast a thirty nine year old fifty one
- 2:00Speaker 3: year old just to get this drama that they want
- 2:02Speaker 3: to manufacture. I loved that that was not what happened.
- 2:05Speaker 3: This year. We're watching the show, I'm seeing absolutely stunning
- 2:09Speaker 3: beautiful women who are age appropriate as our NAXT guest.
- 2:15Speaker 3: But it was just lovely to see it, and it
- 2:17Speaker 3: was like, it wasn't the bullshit, no drama that you
- 2:21Speaker 3: see when you're seeing a lot of these shows.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Do you know what I love really nice?
- 2:26Speaker 4: It's I can more relate to you guys and your
- 2:31Speaker 4: plight to find love again than I can to the
- 2:35Speaker 4: twenty six year olds who and it's nothing. It's nothing
- 2:40Speaker 4: against them. I honestly feel like everyone deserves love, but
- 2:44Speaker 4: for me personally, and I feel like a lot of
- 2:47Speaker 4: people around the country, we relate to the fact that,
- 2:52Speaker 4: you know, maybe we don't have a relationship currently, and
- 2:56Speaker 4: we've lived life, and.
- 2:58Speaker 1: We know who we are that we've lived life, so
- 3:02Speaker 1: we had like these huge backstories.
- 3:03Speaker 5: So like the book, yeah, like is like we're over
- 3:06Speaker 5: that you don't like, are.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Like we've had happen now, okay, so like we've you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: we've lost our spouses and we the women have been
- 3:13Speaker 1: divorced when lady husband had committed suicide. We have kids
- 3:16Speaker 1: who have gone through I had a daughter who was
- 3:18Speaker 1: home the reason I left. She had just had a baby,
- 3:20Speaker 1: she was suffering terrible postpartner depression like that those bullsh
- 3:24Speaker 1: things like you like you looked at me wrong, like
- 3:26Speaker 1: that stuff was not happening in our season. And we
- 3:28Speaker 1: kind of agreed on that right in the beginning. We
- 3:30Speaker 1: kind of came together. The first time we met, we
- 3:32Speaker 1: were like, okay, I too, Like my tribe is here.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I finally found like going through life, going through trying
- 3:39Speaker 1: to find love when you're in your sixties and seventies sucks.
- 3:43Speaker 5: It's not fun. It doesn't happen organically. You have to
- 3:45Speaker 5: make an effort.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It's kind of demeaning a little bit being out there,
- 3:49Speaker 1: being in this age and looking for love.
- 3:50Speaker 5: And like I walked into a room and I found
- 3:52Speaker 5: like my tribe.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah, there were twenty two or twenty one other people
- 3:56Speaker 1: like going on the same journey as me.
- 3:57Speaker 5: And it felt so comforting to have like all.
- 4:00Speaker 1: These people that I could talk to and like kind
- 4:02Speaker 1: of learn from, because like I didn't know.
- 4:04Speaker 5: How to do this. I had no idea.
- 4:06Speaker 1: My husband had passed away, it'll be almost three years now.
- 4:09Speaker 1: At the time when I applied for this, it was.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Only two years.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I hadn't really like gone into the dating game yet,
- 4:14Speaker 1: and I didn't really know how to do it.
- 4:15Speaker 5: And I learned so much from these women.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And they give you so much confidence, Like you gained
- 4:20Speaker 1: the confidence that they have to go out there and
- 4:22Speaker 1: like like you deserve it. They made me feel like
- 4:25Speaker 1: we deserve it. I mean that was kind of the
- 4:27Speaker 1: whole message from this season.
- 4:28Speaker 5: There was hope, Like I love that I have hope.
- 4:30Speaker 4: So Joe.
- 4:31Speaker 3: I've always had this thing about the Bachelor, which I've
- 4:34Speaker 3: said for many years, and it's you know, it's it's
- 4:37Speaker 3: been a thing. Maybe it's just to take the piss
- 4:39Speaker 3: out of myself a little bit, but I've always said, like,
- 4:42Speaker 3: you know, when you look at the show The Bachelor,
- 4:45Speaker 3: it's not about the guy. It really isn't. And you know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: I think you probably know what I'm a say, cause
- 4:50Speaker 3: I've said it to you a million times. But people
- 4:52Speaker 3: always will say, like, what's your advice for the next Bachelor,
- 4:55Speaker 3: And I'll say, well, my advice is it's not about you, right,
- 4:58Speaker 3: It's about a bunch of women who have never in this.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I got to say, to be honest, I don't think
- 5:06Speaker 3: it applies for this for the Golden Bachelor, But in
- 5:10Speaker 3: the past I've always kind of taken the piss out
- 5:12Speaker 3: of myself and saying like, it doesn't matter about the guy.
- 5:16Speaker 3: It matters about a bunch of women who are overachievers,
- 5:19Speaker 3: who have done amazing things in their lives and they
- 5:22Speaker 3: don't you know, see themselves coming in second place to anything.
- 5:27Speaker 3: But watching this season made me rethink this a lot,
- 5:31Speaker 3: because I've always sort of had this dismissive mindset with it,
- 5:35Speaker 3: and I hate to admit it, but it's kind of true.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And watching this season, I saw like genuine friendships and
- 5:41Speaker 3: genuine personalities blossom throughout the course of the show. And
- 5:45Speaker 3: you all are beautiful and intelligent and you know, accomplished
- 5:51Speaker 3: people who have reached this milestone and in your life,
- 5:56Speaker 3: and you're also kind of at this point where it's like,
- 5:58Speaker 3: what's next for me? And so was Gary? What was
- 6:02Speaker 3: next for you? I mean, was that was where you
- 6:04Speaker 3: were going with this?
- 6:05Speaker 5: It's certainly a possibility.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I mean, I obviously knew that there were twenty two
- 6:08Speaker 1: of us and only one was going to go home
- 6:10Speaker 1: with him, so twenty one people weren't. I was very
- 6:14Speaker 1: open to the process of like, I didn't want him
- 6:18Speaker 1: to pick me as like a default or because you know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: he didn't have dates with other people. I wanted him
- 6:24Speaker 1: to go and explore a relationship with every single other
- 6:27Speaker 1: person and then if he picked me in the end,
- 6:29Speaker 1: then that was great, or if I picked him in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the end I mean, really, it's a two way street.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you got to pick him too.
- 6:33Speaker 5: And you know, like we're not like.
- 6:34Speaker 1: The young girls they're looking for, you know, fathers. You know,
- 6:38Speaker 1: they have biological clocks.
- 6:39Speaker 5: We don't have that.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'm not looking for a husband that's a good provider.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I have my own money. I'm not looking for somebody
- 6:45Speaker 1: who's going to be a good father. My kids are
- 6:47Speaker 1: all grown. I was looking for a true companion. So
- 6:50Speaker 1: I have like kind of different things that I'm looking for,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and I think the same is true, you know, for him.
- 6:56Speaker 1: So he had I mean really twenty two really kind
- 6:59Speaker 1: of different but interesting women that he could have chosen from.
- 7:02Speaker 1: He needed to pick the person that was best for him.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And I didn't know if that was me. But I
- 7:06Speaker 1: could have been me.
- 7:07Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I didn't My journey ended released, you know, kind of
- 7:10Speaker 1: pretty pretty quickly, so it could have been me.
- 7:13Speaker 5: And I went there. I went.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I came here thinking that I was of hosibility, right,
- 7:17Speaker 1: And now it's a two way street and it's not
- 7:19Speaker 1: just him picking me, but it's me picking him. And
- 7:21Speaker 1: it's same, you know, with all the women like Nancy
- 7:24Speaker 1: left on her own, I left on my own. You know,
- 7:26Speaker 1: some people left on their own because like maybe he
- 7:28Speaker 1: wasn't the perfect match.
- 7:30Speaker 5: So that's all right. It was okay, it's a two
- 7:31Speaker 5: way street.
- 7:43Speaker 2: There's so much here that we're going to get into.
- 7:46Speaker 2: But was there any point in your experience where you
- 7:48Speaker 2: did think, hey, maybe this isn't right for Gary and myself.
- 7:53Speaker 1: So I'm sure, as you all all know, because you've
- 7:56Speaker 1: done this, you in the beginning, you have very small
- 7:59Speaker 1: little nippets of time with the person, so like you'll
- 8:02Speaker 1: have like two minutes or five minutes, and they're they're quick,
- 8:05Speaker 1: so you have like kind of like superficial conversations with them.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I fortunately got a date with him, and so after
- 8:11Speaker 1: the talent show, I had a date and we had
- 8:13Speaker 1: one of those epic dates where you go on a
- 8:15Speaker 1: yacht and there's a lot of hubbub. We had like
- 8:17Speaker 1: a regular old, boring date where you go and you
- 8:19Speaker 1: sit down at a table and you have dinner. Of course,
- 8:22Speaker 1: as you know, you can't eat, so you sit there at.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Yeah, the food smells so good. It was just such
- 8:32Speaker 5: a smell delicious. I was starving.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Now.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That probably is the most common question that I still
- 8:38Speaker 2: get asked is why don't you eat the food? So
- 8:40Speaker 2: when you're an og, the food is brought out, you
- 8:44Speaker 2: ate it. You had a great date, normal people, normal people.
- 8:46Speaker 2: When I was on the show as the Bachelor, the
- 8:50Speaker 2: food would be beautiful, but it had been sitting out
- 8:52Speaker 2: for three hours, right, so they had plated it the
- 8:54Speaker 2: lobsters and the whatever first allergist lobster. So I was
- 8:58Speaker 2: never eating that'sfish guy, Yeah, fish guy, but too, it
- 9:02Speaker 2: has been sitting out forever. Yeah, so we never ate.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I ate in between dates.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, we did, so they fed me before I went
- 9:08Speaker 1: on the date. But I like, I sat down and
- 9:10Speaker 1: it was an ars smelled good, so ours was kind
- 9:12Speaker 1: of it came from an Italian restaurant right next door,
- 9:15Speaker 1: so it was like smelling good, it was warm. They
- 9:18Speaker 1: sat us down. I want to eat it so badly,
- 9:20Speaker 1: but we couldn't. But it was okay. So we had
- 9:22Speaker 1: this like actually really good conversation. It was like a
- 9:25Speaker 1: normal date where you sit there for like three hours
- 9:27Speaker 1: and you just talk about life. And we had a
- 9:29Speaker 1: really really good conversation. And at that point I thought, like,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you know, I could see myself with him.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Possibly. I knew we had like a kind of a
- 9:37Speaker 5: big age difference. So I'm sixty. He had just turned
- 9:39Speaker 5: seventy two. Okay, so that's like a big age difference.
- 9:42Speaker 5: So I was still my wife and.
- 9:44Speaker 3: I call that a Thursday.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Already said that tonight thirteen years right, so you know,
- 9:50Speaker 6: all right, a right, sorry, Well I that a Tuesday, Tuesday,
- 9:55Speaker 6: And so things can work, obviously, you know they can work.
- 9:58Speaker 1: In certainly at this age, I think that it's more
- 10:00Speaker 1: likely to work because like you don't have to worry
- 10:02Speaker 1: about having kids and.
- 10:03Speaker 5: You know, biological yeah, that kind of crap.
- 10:05Speaker 1: So I did see for the first time actually in
- 10:09Speaker 1: my dating since my husband passed, I.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Kind of felt like I saw a future with somebody.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I did feel like he was a really good guy
- 10:15Speaker 1: and we had a lot in common, and the conversation
- 10:18Speaker 1: was super easy and flowed and like we had, you know,
- 10:21Speaker 1: conversations and you and you probably realized this that you
- 10:24Speaker 1: have these important conversations. You don't just talk about crap
- 10:27Speaker 1: because yeah, you're making you're both making a decision in
- 10:30Speaker 1: thirty days. Yeah, you can't talk about like you know,
- 10:35Speaker 1: what your dog's names, you talk about the weather.
- 10:38Speaker 5: You have to talk about like would you ever move
- 10:39Speaker 5: to my hometown or where do you picture yourself living.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Yeah, you jump automatically to the stuff you have.
- 10:45Speaker 5: To do, big station. So we had those conversations.
- 10:47Speaker 3: That's important.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Yeah, So I felt like I never felt like he
- 10:51Speaker 5: wasn't a good match for me. But my journey ended
- 10:53Speaker 5: so quickly that I don't think I ever got to
- 10:55Speaker 5: the point either way. I never got to like be
- 10:58Speaker 5: all invested or not invested. It was like in limbo
- 11:01Speaker 5: and then it was over.
- 11:02Speaker 4: And I have to say I went. I walked up
- 11:05Speaker 4: to Joan tonight and said, I was so inspired in
- 11:10Speaker 4: a way because watching her leave the show because she
- 11:16Speaker 4: needed to, you know, be there for her daughter. Just
- 11:20Speaker 4: it is how I feel like I would hope I
- 11:23Speaker 4: would have reacted, you know, or would react if that
- 11:27Speaker 4: were my situation. But I think that you know your
- 11:33Speaker 4: value system I really respect and anyway, Yeah, so I
- 11:39Speaker 4: appreciated you.
- 11:40Speaker 5: You would have left because because.
- 11:42Speaker 4: That's what we do. We talked about it.
- 11:44Speaker 3: That's all we do is I.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Didn't even get the thing twice, and I feel I
- 11:47Speaker 1: feel kind of bad that I'm getting credit for this.
- 11:49Speaker 4: People.
- 11:49Speaker 5: You're such a good mom, right, I feel like, yeah, everything,
- 11:52Speaker 5: but you have to.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Give yourself credit, because honestly, there are people out there
- 11:56Speaker 4: that are not good moms and they wouldn't do that.
- 12:00Speaker 4: You need to give yourself credit.
- 12:01Speaker 5: It's true.
- 12:01Speaker 1: So I have gotten some you know, as you know,
- 12:03Speaker 1: you get a lot of messages from people I'm strangers,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and a lot of them is like, oh my god,
- 12:07Speaker 1: you're such a good mom, and I answered, oh, you know,
- 12:09Speaker 1: super thank you.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 1: But then I get a message every once in a
- 12:11Speaker 1: while and not rarely, honestly, that my mom was not
- 12:15Speaker 1: there for me when I had and I had this depression,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and my heart goes out with them, out for them,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and I think, you know, they were really ripped off
- 12:22Speaker 1: in the mom category because that's not right, and you know,
- 12:25Speaker 1: that was a lousy mom. So all of us good
- 12:27Speaker 1: or decent moms would do that, and the crappy moms didn't,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and that's they got, you know, feel bad for them.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I'm gonna do some different I want to dive into Joan.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I have some really if you're okay with it, like
- 12:41Speaker 2: more like specific questions. But I want to keep Bob
- 12:43Speaker 2: and Tristy here for the next twenty thirty minutes. We're
- 12:47Speaker 2: going to do a crossover it's going to be almost
- 12:49Speaker 2: famous OG and almost famous here with Joan. We'll be
- 12:53Speaker 2: back with more.
