- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the UConn Football Coaches Show, Mike Crispino along
- 0:03Speaker 1: with Jason Candle. Coach, we're going to talk to Hayden
- 0:05Speaker 1: Pegg in a couple minutes here. The junior, Richard Jr.,
- 0:09Speaker 1: he and Kavion Sherman are your leading tacklers right now, 34-piece.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hayden's had three breakups, pass coverage-wise. But can you tell
- 0:19Speaker 1: us about the growth of players like this, a guy
- 0:22Speaker 1: that has been around the UConn's campus for, he told me,
- 0:26Speaker 1: four seasons now, getting a shot here to play and
- 0:30Speaker 1: actually really contributing to what's going on. I mean, what's
- 0:33Speaker 1: that say about a player like that?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think he's, first of all, an
- 0:38Speaker 2: elite human being. Goes about his process in his day
- 0:43Speaker 2: the way a pro should and does. And, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 2: just very mature and comfortable in his own skin. you know,
- 0:51Speaker 2: he goes out with a great competitive spirit each and
- 0:52Speaker 2: every day to practice. It was evident to me in
- 0:54Speaker 2: spring practice that he was, you know, not just your,
- 0:58Speaker 2: your average walk-on guy that's occupying a roster spot that
- 1:01Speaker 2: he had, he meant serious business and he was going
- 1:03Speaker 2: to try to make an impact on the team any
- 1:05Speaker 2: way he could. He values his special teams reps, um,
- 1:08Speaker 2: get some success there, tastes a little bit of that,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and then just continues to, it just snowballs from there.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So he's been playing great. Um, you know, we were
- 1:17Speaker 2: rewarded and we put them on scholarship and, you know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: one of those feel good moments for the team. And
- 1:21Speaker 2: a lot of times coaches, I think, you know, they
- 1:24Speaker 2: paste that stuff all over social media and it's almost like,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, you're doing it for your own attention as
- 1:29Speaker 2: a coach, but you know, this is, this is, this
- 1:32Speaker 2: was all about him and his ability to persevere and
- 1:35Speaker 2: get to the point in time where it needed to
- 1:36Speaker 2: be rewarded for his work. And I know his teammates
- 1:40Speaker 2: really respect him and they appreciate how he approaches each
- 1:42Speaker 2: and every day. And I definitely know our coaching staff
- 1:44Speaker 2: does as well.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yes, his dad, Dave Pegg, played for Yale back in
- 1:50Speaker 1: the late 90s. I mean, Dan Hurley talks about this
- 1:54Speaker 1: in terms of recruiting players, and I'm sure you have
- 1:56Speaker 1: this similar philosophy. How much do the parents matter when
- 2:01Speaker 1: you recruit guys? I mean, because it's going to come
- 2:04Speaker 1: down to how they were brought up and what kind
- 2:07Speaker 1: of attitudes they have towards life and their confidence and
- 2:10Speaker 1: their approach.
- 2:11Speaker 3: And certainly Hayden Pegg seems like one of those guys.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think in recruiting, I say it often. I,
- 2:16Speaker 2: you know, I tell parents, look, like if you screwed
- 2:18Speaker 2: this up for 17 years, I sure as hell can't
- 2:20Speaker 2: fix it in four. You know, like that's just what
- 2:24Speaker 2: it is.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So we want to make sure that, you know, we
- 2:28Speaker 2: have guys that are a product of good parenting and,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, that doesn't mean that everybody has to have
- 2:35Speaker 2: elite resources growing up.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I mean, you know, like there's kids that had really
- 2:40Speaker 2: tough upbringings, but they have a great perspective because at
- 2:43Speaker 2: the end of the day, they had you know, a
- 2:44Speaker 2: great fundamental base from a parent, a grandparent, an uncle,
- 2:48Speaker 2: a cousin, whoever was really, you know, the purpose and
- 2:52Speaker 2: the why factor in their life to put them in,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you know, a position where they could grow as an individual.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And then they probably got around some really good coaches
- 3:00Speaker 2: in high school and being in a good program and
- 3:03Speaker 2: learning the lessons that, you know, that sports teaches you. So, yeah,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you don't have a chance to have a culture. You
- 3:12Speaker 2: don't have a chance to have the good fabric of
- 3:14Speaker 2: your team if you don't start there.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Adversity is a word that came up a little bit,
- 3:21Speaker 1: I think, over the last few days. I actually walked
- 3:23Speaker 1: out of the stadium the other day. I went by
- 3:26Speaker 1: some of the folks who I know who come to
- 3:28Speaker 1: Tailgate and come to the football games.
- 3:30Speaker 3: They've been doing it for years.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And just listening to some of their comments, you know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: talking about bouncing back from those deficits, getting the lead
- 3:38Speaker 1: in overtime games, dealing with adversity. That's what I was
- 3:41Speaker 1: hearing from some of the fans. I was happy about
- 3:44Speaker 1: that because I felt like that was one of the,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you know, kind of telltale signs of what happened on Saturday.
- 3:51Speaker 3: How did you view that in the big picture? Well,
- 3:54Speaker 3: I would agree.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And I'm glad that, you know, that people see that
- 3:58Speaker 2: sports are about momentum and if you can, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: and it's about the pressure of those, you know, those
- 4:04Speaker 2: situations when momentum flips. And I think, you know, I
- 4:07Speaker 2: talk to our team all the time, like there's pressure
- 4:08Speaker 2: in sports or, every turn and you're either applying it
- 4:11Speaker 2: or you're, or you're feeling it.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And, um, you know, if you can look at.
- 4:16Speaker 2: The scoreboard and stare there or look at the stat
- 4:20Speaker 2: sheet and, you know, look and put your energy in places,
- 4:22Speaker 2: it doesn't matter, man. Oh man, you, that, that pressure
- 4:25Speaker 2: is going to crush you. But if you can just
- 4:27Speaker 2: focus on playing the next play and, you know, doing
- 4:30Speaker 2: a really good job with your next rep that you get,
- 4:33Speaker 2: you will, that, that momentum can flip because you'll start
- 4:36Speaker 2: to apply the pressure back to your opponent. And, And
- 4:38Speaker 2: a lot of cases we did that Saturday and, you know,
- 4:40Speaker 2: give credit to Syracuse too, because they put us in
- 4:43Speaker 2: some tough situations too.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Quick thought on, if you have any info on
- 4:47Speaker 1: Javon Brown, he went down, he had to be carted
- 4:50Speaker 1: off in the ball game. It was, it was a
- 4:52Speaker 1: very emotional time for everybody, both teams kind of gathering there.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Do we have any kind of update on his condition?
- 4:59Speaker 1: What's happening with him?
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Javon was discharged from the hospital Saturday night. You know,
- 5:06Speaker 2: the neurological stuff is all clear, all of that stuff
- 5:09Speaker 2: back to walking around here on his own two feet,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you know, waiting to see what it's going to be
- 5:14Speaker 2: like as far as, you know, how a timeline of
- 5:17Speaker 2: when he's able to get back on the practice field
- 5:19Speaker 2: and get back to play. But, you know, what, where
- 5:23Speaker 2: everybody's mind goes when a, you know, a stretcher comes
- 5:26Speaker 2: out on the field and, you know, you get into
- 5:28Speaker 2: those types of situations, like all that stuff is long-term,
- 5:31Speaker 2: I think all clear. And, you know, when I were
- 5:33Speaker 2: just trying to do the best we can to, They're
- 5:36Speaker 2: given the proper protocol to get him back and get
- 5:37Speaker 2: him back on the field and doing what he loves
- 5:39Speaker 2: to do.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah, boy, that's good news, Coach. Appreciate hearing that.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Back with more from Jason Candle. The UConn Football Coaches
- 5:46Speaker 1: Show continues. Temple in Philadelphia on Saturday on Learfield.
