- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is Luna. Luna: Hey everyone. We are picking up right where we left off. Last time we talked about stretching before a workout. Lucas: Right. We learned that you might say, 'Ich muss mich dehnen.' And your legs might feel tight, so you would say, 'Meine Beine sind ganz fest.' Luna: Yes. And after stretching, we usually want to start moving. But sometimes, the machines look complicated. Lucas: Exactly. That is what today is about. Walking onto the gym floor and needing assistance. It happens to everyone. Luna: I feel shy asking strangers for help. I worry about sounding foolish. Lucas: You are not foolish. You are being smart. Safety first. So, let us look at the first phrase. Luna: Okay. What do I say if I see someone using a machine I want to use? Lucas: You can simply ask: Kann mir jemand helfen? Luna: Kann mir jemand helfen? Lucas: Good. Let me break it down slowly. Kann. Mir. Jemand. Helfen? Luna: Kann. Mir. Jemand. Helfen? Lucas: Perfect. 'Kann' means 'can'. 'Mir' means 'me'. 'Jemand' means 'someone'. And 'helfen' means 'to help'. Luna: So it literally translates to 'Can someone help me?' Lucas: Exactly. It is polite, clear, and very common. Let us try it again together. Luna: Kann mir jemand helfen? Lucas: There it is. Nailed it. Now, imagine you are standing in front of a treadmill. You do not know how to start it. Luna: Oh no. The buttons have lights everywhere. I am lost. Lucas: That is when you use our second phrase. How benutze ich das? Luna: Wie benutze ich das? Lucas: Let's slow it down. Wie. Benutze. Ich. Das? Luna: Wie. Benutze. Ich. Das? Lucas: Very good. 'Wie' means 'how'. 'Benutze' comes from 'benutzen', which means 'to use'. 'Ich' is 'I'. And 'das' is 'that'. Luna: So it means 'How do I use that?' Lucas: Correct. This is perfect for when you are confused by a screen or a lever. Luna: Wie benutze ich das? Lucas: Again. Slowly. Luna: Wie benutze ich das? Lucas: And one more time, normally. Luna: Wie benutze ich das? Lucas: Excellent. You are getting the rhythm now. Now, let's add a third situation. Luna: What is that? Lucas: You want to sit on a bench or stand at a squat rack, but there is a towel or a bag on it. Luna: Oh, I hate that. I always leave my stuff there by accident. Lucas: It happens. So you ask politely: Ist hier noch frei? Luna: Ist hier noch frei? Lucas: Let's take it apart. Ist. Hier. Noch. Frei? Luna: Ist. Hier. Noch. Frei? Lucas: 'Ist' is 'is'. 'Hier' is 'here'. 'Noch' means 'still' or 'yet'. And 'frei' means 'free' or 'available'. Luna: So it means 'Is this still free?' Lucas: Exactly. It implies you are asking if the spot is available for you to use. Luna: Ist hier noch frei? Lucas: Try it again. Make it sound natural. Luna: Ist hier noch frei? Lucas: Yes. If someone says yes, they might say 'Ja, bitte.' Which means 'Yes, please.' Luna: If they say no? Then I just move along. Lucas: Right. They might be keeping their spot. Or they might say 'Warten Sie kurz.' Which means 'Wait a moment.' Luna: Okay. So we have three phrases for the gym floor. Lucas: Let's review them quickly. First, asking for general assistance. Luna: Kann mir jemand helfen? Lucas: Second, asking how to use a machine. Luna: Wie benutze ich das? Lucas: And third, checking if a spot is available. Luna: Ist hier noch frei? Lucas: These are incredibly useful. You do not need to speak perfect German to get help. Luna: True. Just these small phrases open doors. Literally. Lucas: Speaking of opening doors, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, consider supporting us. Imagine you are walking toward the weight area. Luna: I see a guy sitting on the bench. I want to do leg presses. Lucas: Do you ask him directly? Or do you look around? Luna: I walk over and ask: Ist hier noch frei? Lucas: He looks up and says: Ja, bitte. Come right here. Luna: Great. I sit down. But the seat is too high. I cannot reach the pin. Lucas: So you turn to the person next to you. You smile. You say: Kann mir jemand helfen? Luna: He adjusts the seat for me. Thank you very much. Lucas: Now you finish your set. You walk over to the cable machine. It looks scary. Luna: The cables twist. I don't want to hurt myself. I ask: Wie benutze ich das? Lucas: A trainer walks by. He shows you how to lock the pin. He nods at you. Luna: I feel so much better. I understand what I am doing now. Lucas: That is the goal. Confidence comes from knowing what to say. Luna: I still practice these in my head. Every day. Lucas: Good habit. Let's repeat the first one again. For memory. Luna: Kann mir jemand helfen? Lucas: And the second one. Luna: Wie benutze ich das? Lucas: And the last one. Luna: Ist hier noch frei? Lucas: You are doing great. These phrases will serve you well. Luna: I feel ready for the gym floor now. No more hiding in the corner. Lucas: That is the spirit. Speak up. Ask questions. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I am learning so much. Lucas: We are glad to hear that. Practice these until we chat again. Luna: See you next time. Tschüss!
