After a string of personal losses, including the death of both her parents and a near-fatal car accident, Leah withdrew from college and embraced a more free-spirited lifestyle, inspired by the writings of Jack Kerouac. The catalyst for her disappearance came on March 9, 2000, when Leah packed her Jeep Cherokee and withdrew $3,000 in cash, telling no one where she was headed.
