- 0:18Speaker 1: Case Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We are well into early season whitetail hunting, but ambition
- 0:25Speaker 2: is not lost because hunters around the country remark how
- 0:27Speaker 2: weather changes are increasing deer movement.
- 0:31Speaker 3: This is rutfresh. Let's go what's going on? Everybody.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Welcome to another edition of rut Fresh Radio. This is
- 0:48Speaker 4: Week two, Week two of multiple weeks throughout the entire
- 0:53Speaker 4: fallow winter that we're going to be doing this. We're
- 0:54Speaker 4: talking to people from all over the country this week.
- 0:58Speaker 4: We're trying to bring to you a lot of these
- 1:00Speaker 4: deer seasons that are open that people think about, but
- 1:03Speaker 4: also the ones that are a little more ambiguous. Case
- 1:07Speaker 4: I feel like this is the first time it actually
- 1:10Speaker 4: feels a little bit more like deer season.
- 1:12Speaker 3: All summer, it's been blazing hart, it has been blazing hot.
- 1:15Speaker 2: The recent addition of cool weather is like almost a
- 1:20Speaker 2: new feeling because it's been so long.
- 1:22Speaker 3: But never fear.
- 1:24Speaker 2: First light has you covered whether it's hot or cold,
- 1:26Speaker 2: to get you some first light gear.
- 1:29Speaker 3: It's gear for deer. It is gear for deer. We're
- 1:32Speaker 3: in here for the deer, for the deer. And who
- 1:34Speaker 3: we're gonna hear from today? Oh man, just so many rhymes.
- 1:39Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:39Speaker 4: We got a few people that are gonna we're gonna
- 1:41Speaker 4: hearing from Greg Litzinger in Delaware. I don't even know
- 1:44Speaker 4: that season was open yet.
- 1:45Speaker 2: How big is Delaware? About the size of our county,
- 1:48Speaker 2: I feel like it is about a county size. I
- 1:50Speaker 2: feel like it's very small. I wanted to be like, man,
- 1:52Speaker 2: where are you hunting? But you know, I wouldn't be
- 1:54Speaker 2: hard to find it one day. So it's like deon, man,
- 1:57Speaker 2: it ain't hard to find That's right. Lucas Psycho and
- 2:00Speaker 2: North Dakota. He's a good friend of ours, optimist and uh,
- 2:03Speaker 2: just a really good deer hunter. He's always on just
- 2:07Speaker 2: big old and I ain't even talking about Michigan mature.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I'm talking about some mature bucks, you know what I mean.
- 2:12Speaker 2: This ain't two year olds.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Christian Babcock he's getting over a food sickness of food poisoning,
- 2:19Speaker 4: which I know how brtle that can be, but it's
- 2:21Speaker 4: a good way to start your diet. He's out in
- 2:23Speaker 4: Nebraska this week and he's been having some decent success,
- 2:28Speaker 4: good sightings, good report for us. And then our old buddy,
- 2:32Speaker 4: Brian Grossman. He's not old, He's just a buddy that
- 2:35Speaker 4: has been a buddy for an old time.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You know it was Spanish, you'd say Ola, buddy, like
- 2:40Speaker 2: that kind of old buddy.
- 2:42Speaker 4: I feel like there's a lot of people that put
- 2:43Speaker 4: La in English too, you know, when they're trying to
- 2:45Speaker 4: tie the short of old, you know, and they put
- 2:49Speaker 4: the apostrophe, or instead of putting the apostrophe, they put
- 2:51Speaker 4: a E at the end. It's Ola Olan grocery yelle.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Brian's out in Georgia. So another Southern boy who man.
- 3:00Speaker 4: He he puts a challenge on himself, you know, he's
- 3:04Speaker 4: he's a part of an entity that knows a lot
- 3:10Speaker 4: about managing deer. Yet he and he does that too,
- 3:14Speaker 4: but he still really challenges himself on public land every
- 3:16Speaker 4: year and has been really working hard to do that.
- 3:20Speaker 4: He actually had some success this past week, so September
- 3:23Speaker 4: deer doesn't he he does. Man, It's weird that Georgia
- 3:26Speaker 4: is open in September. I feel like it's got to
- 3:29Speaker 4: be just pretty much home for us, but just with
- 3:32Speaker 4: a deer season.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Yeah, so hot. I don't know.
- 3:35Speaker 2: There's a there's a trend nationally to have these earlier seasons,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and I kind of wonder what that's driven by. I
- 3:42Speaker 2: think it's pretty much economics. I would have massed. I mean,
- 3:45Speaker 2: hunters want an opportunity at velvet deer, and that's kind
- 3:49Speaker 2: of pretty apparent. But like, I don't know what a
- 3:53Speaker 2: state's motivation is unless they have their like exceeding quotas
- 3:58Speaker 2: or exceeding you know, the amount of deer that they're
- 4:01Speaker 2: trying to have in a landscape. So they're just gonna
- 4:02Speaker 2: open up more season outside of the travel thing, and
- 4:05Speaker 2: sooner or later it's gonna kind of flip flop. As
- 4:07Speaker 2: we see more and more of these states opening up
- 4:09Speaker 2: more early seasons, it's gonna not be as special anymore.
- 4:14Speaker 2: So you're gonna have less travel and it's like, well, it.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Easier to find guys for refresh though, I guarantee you
- 4:20Speaker 4: that that's right if you want your state to be
- 4:26Speaker 4: refreshed on retfresh and.
- 4:30Speaker 3: We're not hitting it.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Let us know, because we try to make sure we
- 4:33Speaker 2: hit every state in the country that has a white
- 4:36Speaker 2: tailed deer season throughout the year. But these early seasons
- 4:39Speaker 2: are kind of hard because I don't really know what's
- 4:41Speaker 2: going on in Vermont Vermont, to tell you the truth,
- 4:44Speaker 2: but especially.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Now when Bernie is out of the main news, you know,
- 4:48Speaker 3: I mean.
- 4:50Speaker 4: There's a there's a way to get in touch with
- 4:52Speaker 4: us too. Probably the best way would be just send
- 4:54Speaker 4: an Instagram messages a message. So that's uh the element wild.
- 4:58Speaker 4: So you can check that out if you if you
- 5:00Speaker 4: follow Wired to Hunt, but you don't follow us, we're
- 5:03Speaker 4: over there. If you send a message to Wired to Hunt,
- 5:06Speaker 4: it will not get responded to Norm will it probably
- 5:08Speaker 4: even get read. You know, I don't know I'm speaking
- 5:11Speaker 4: from Mark, but I can promise you that, I can
- 5:13Speaker 4: almost promise you we will not find out that your
- 5:16Speaker 4: state needs to be highlighted if you send that.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Message there, So Tyler, Yes, sir.
- 5:19Speaker 2: The guys on the podcast today talk a lot about
- 5:23Speaker 2: tactics remaining pretty similar, but weather change is making a
- 5:30Speaker 2: difference on how many deer they observe. You yourself are
- 5:37Speaker 2: I'm going to go and say likely to shoot a
- 5:38Speaker 2: September buck this year, am I yes? Likeliness, their likeness
- 5:42Speaker 2: is high. What pattern you know? This is called retfresh right,
- 5:48Speaker 2: because people like to hunt the rut. We all realize
- 5:52Speaker 2: the road is not going on in September. It's not
- 5:54Speaker 2: lost on us, I promise guys. So in fact, September
- 5:58Speaker 2: is about as far from the road as it gets outside.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Of like may.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Right, So what pattern do you expect to kill a
- 6:06Speaker 2: deer on in September?
- 6:09Speaker 3: Is it gonna better?
- 6:11Speaker 6: No?
- 6:11Speaker 3: Not in on on?
- 6:13Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I man, I would say I'm going to
- 6:23Speaker 4: kill a deer on a pattern that a lot of
- 6:25Speaker 4: guys are hunting right now, which is bed to feed,
- 6:27Speaker 4: bed to food, however you want to say it, And
- 6:31Speaker 4: probably I expect to shoot a deer.
- 6:35Speaker 3: In the evening headed to food. That's my that's my thought,
- 6:39Speaker 3: and probably not corn but something else. Let me ask
- 6:45Speaker 3: you a question. You said evening.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It's because a lot of times early season evenings are
- 6:51Speaker 2: kind of like sometimes the only time people hunt. I've
- 6:54Speaker 2: hunted mornings and evenings, but it's because I've had a
- 6:57Speaker 2: lot of room. I think the average hunter, if they're
- 7:01Speaker 2: hunting this time, you may or may not have a
- 7:03Speaker 2: ton of different areas to go to, especially if they're
- 7:05Speaker 2: hunting private ground, So how apt are you to hunt
- 7:10Speaker 2: or to write off mornings if you only have like
- 7:14Speaker 2: a limited area, so you have one hundred acres to hunt,
- 7:18Speaker 2: are you gonna hunt a morning?
- 7:20Speaker 4: I think I think it would be more based on
- 7:24Speaker 4: what the deer doing than how much room I have.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I think, you know, generally speaking, the less room you have,
- 7:32Speaker 4: probably you're probably right, you're probably on the right track there,
- 7:35Speaker 4: But I definitely think that it would be more. I
- 7:38Speaker 4: would think more about when is that deer most killable
- 7:43Speaker 4: and or is he killable in the morning, as opposed to,
- 7:49Speaker 4: you know, the number of acres. So I think, like
- 7:52Speaker 4: I guess what I'm saying is I killed the deer
- 7:55Speaker 4: October fourth on bed to feed nothing else. In a
- 7:59Speaker 4: bachelor group with another nice eight point killed a ten
- 8:02Speaker 4: point on public ground. They were I don't know what
- 8:07Speaker 4: you know if there's a term for it, but I
- 8:09Speaker 4: always call it back to bed food stage or staging,
- 8:13Speaker 4: and so essentially deer all early season they'll leave these
- 8:17Speaker 4: agfields and pretty early usually and then they'll get into
- 8:21Speaker 4: cover and then they'll feed around for quite a while
- 8:23Speaker 4: sometimes so they may not even move a lot, or
- 8:26Speaker 4: they may still kind of browse through and move pretty good,
- 8:28Speaker 4: which they were doing that morning. And you know, really
- 8:33Speaker 4: what they're looking what you're looking at is like high
- 8:35Speaker 4: Stem count high Ford count cover that a deer, it feels,
- 8:41Speaker 4: you know, is pretty has got a good advantage of
- 8:45Speaker 4: for the cover for what he likes for that time
- 8:48Speaker 4: of year when he's not like stupid like they are
- 8:51Speaker 4: on the rut, you know, and just crazy.
- 8:53Speaker 3: And so you know you've.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Got the cover aspect, but you also need something for
- 8:58Speaker 4: them to browse on. So in this case, it was
- 9:00Speaker 4: a lot of willows for the cover, I felt like,
- 9:03Speaker 4: and a lot of just random I don't even know.
- 9:05Speaker 4: It was in South Dakota. There's Forbes everywhere. That was
- 9:07Speaker 4: a couple of years ago. So they were just browsing
- 9:10Speaker 4: like crazy. This was so fat. So I think that's
- 9:13Speaker 4: kind of what I look at more than ething, is
- 9:15Speaker 4: like can I kill that deer in the morning? And
- 9:17Speaker 4: so I knew where these deer were probably going to
- 9:21Speaker 4: destinate the night before. I had made assumptions, but I
- 9:24Speaker 4: hadn't actually seen these deer in this field, and so
- 9:27Speaker 4: and then I put together that betting would be, you
- 9:30Speaker 4: know whatever, a half mile away or something. So it's
- 9:32Speaker 4: kind of my long winded answer to that. I guess
- 9:34Speaker 4: it's good. Wind is good this time of year, especially
- 9:37Speaker 4: long ones. Yeah, I mean, if it's still it's not good.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Guys the little breeze to make sure that sin is
- 9:44Speaker 2: going in the right direction, I think that to kind
- 9:46Speaker 2: of go along with that and to kind of play off.
- 9:48Speaker 3: The joke had just made. Early season.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Deer are really patetrable and if you mess up that pattern,
- 9:56Speaker 2: it could be a sad day for you. So don't
- 9:58Speaker 2: go in there blowing your went in a sketchy direction
- 10:01Speaker 2: or whatever, because they are just pretty sensitive this time
- 10:03Speaker 2: of year. They have nothing else to do except to live.
- 10:06Speaker 2: They're not trying to breed, they're not trying to fight,
- 10:08Speaker 2: none of that stuff. They just want to live, so
- 10:10Speaker 2: they will blow out.
- 10:12Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:12Speaker 4: This is a good point man. In fact, those deer
- 10:15Speaker 4: had been seen one of by one of our compotteries,
- 10:18Speaker 4: I think maybe two days before or the day.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Before, Yeah, and.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Had gotten your wind I think at some point, right, yep,
- 10:27Speaker 4: And they were they were not long ways away, but
- 10:29Speaker 4: they were off that pattern for sure. They were onto
- 10:31Speaker 4: a different pattern. And I didn't intend to go hunt
- 10:33Speaker 4: this buck, but that's the buck. The two bachelor bucks
- 10:36Speaker 4: that came in were the ones you had seen, Like.
- 10:38Speaker 2: There's a decent distance from where I had seen them,
- 10:40Speaker 2: and they winded and left out, not like freaking out
- 10:43Speaker 2: or anything, you know, running.
- 10:44Speaker 3: But they end. Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 2: So anyways, I think that's a good thing to keep
- 10:49Speaker 2: in mind this early season. I'm excited to hear what
- 10:51Speaker 2: the other guys around the country have to say, because
- 10:54Speaker 2: it's interesting to me, honestly, is that around the country
- 10:57Speaker 2: almost the same thing is happening everywhere right now, and
- 11:01Speaker 2: as the the year starts to progress and fall starts
- 11:04Speaker 2: to push down, we get to see the changes kind
- 11:06Speaker 2: of happen for different hunters around the country. So it's
- 11:09Speaker 2: an exciting time of year. And I say it almost
- 11:11Speaker 2: every podcast right now. Der season is close. It's real close.
- 11:14Speaker 2: In fact, some of you are having it dear season
- 11:15Speaker 2: right So congratulations to you. I'm about to leave out
- 11:18Speaker 2: on a top secret near mission myself and then go
- 11:22Speaker 2: shoot the biggest elk of my life. It's gonna happen. Wow, Yeah,
- 11:26Speaker 2: I'm calling dude, call it September. Well, I haven't shot
- 11:29Speaker 2: very big Elk. I saw a few olk, but they're all,
- 11:31Speaker 2: like you know, in the high two hundreds, so yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 2: I can do better than that.
- 11:34Speaker 3: I feel like you might have shot one that was
- 11:36Speaker 3: bigger one time too.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 3: He lived over it though sadly I hate to bring
- 11:41Speaker 3: it up. Well you did, but I did.
- 11:45Speaker 4: But I just was thinking because you might end up
- 11:48Speaker 4: seeing some of that footage here pretty soon.
- 11:50Speaker 3: So uh yeah.
- 11:52Speaker 2: By the way, guys, if you're listening today, there's an
- 11:54Speaker 2: Element episode as well. Go check out that on our feed.
- 11:58Speaker 2: But for now, let's get to here. You're what the
- 12:00Speaker 2: guys around the country have to say about white Tail Bucks.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Now on the phone, I've got my good friend Greg
- 12:07Speaker 4: lit singer not to be confused with Ashley Simpson, the
- 12:10Speaker 4: lip syncer. Greg, you've been hunting Delaware, man, how's how's
- 12:15Speaker 4: that been?
- 12:17Speaker 7: It was hot, yeah, hot and shifting winds, which makes
- 12:22Speaker 7: for a fun time in the woods.
- 12:23Speaker 4: You know, that makes it near impossible, man, the shifting
- 12:25Speaker 4: winds thing. Those kind of still days or variable winds, man,
- 12:29Speaker 4: can be really tough.
- 12:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 7: Two days we had good win and they were the
- 12:34Speaker 7: best days of being the woods. You know, steady wind
- 12:37Speaker 7: you ever seen, but that shifting wings, shifting warm winds
- 12:40Speaker 7: are just it's tough.
- 12:41Speaker 4: I wonder if the deer feel that, Like if a
- 12:44Speaker 4: deer is like man, I got a consistent win, like
- 12:46Speaker 4: it's instinctual more than this, but like, you know, I
- 12:49Speaker 4: got something that I can stick my nose into and walk.
- 12:52Speaker 7: You know, I think older bucks, yes, younger bucks probably
- 12:55Speaker 7: not so much, but I think there's been around for
- 12:57Speaker 7: as he wants a steady so much that he wins.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Sure, so public land in Delaware, not a lot of
- 13:03Speaker 4: people thinking about that that are at least across the US.
- 13:06Speaker 4: And uh, it was hot and variable winds, but you
- 13:11Speaker 4: still had some deer come by, right, Yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 7: I was on deer almost every morning. Every time I
- 13:15Speaker 7: went out, I had deer almost in range and three
- 13:19Speaker 7: three four times out there I could have I could
- 13:22Speaker 7: have killed some does. But you know, foliage and stick sometimes.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Yeah, this time here can be tough. Did you what
- 13:31Speaker 4: kind of patterns were you basing your hunting sets on?
- 13:35Speaker 7: Fifty yards off? You know, bean fields? Cornfields?
- 13:39Speaker 3: Cool?
- 13:40Speaker 7: I think people sleep on the corn when there's beans around.
- 13:43Speaker 7: But I get the same pattern.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Deer going the food.
- 13:46Speaker 7: They're not gonna walk the mile to get beans and
- 13:48Speaker 7: there's corn right there, you know, m hm.
- 13:50Speaker 2: As you know, the months pushing on here, I feel
- 13:54Speaker 2: like the bachelor groups are going to start to spread out.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Did you see bucks in bachelor groups?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Do you feel like they were kind of loaners?
- 14:01Speaker 7: My buddy seen them in groups and I started noticing
- 14:04Speaker 7: some rub and scrapes that are they're not ready to
- 14:06Speaker 7: break off some.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Of these boats.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, still a velvet half and half. Yeah, yeah, gotcha.
- 14:14Speaker 4: So I guess as you as you look at the
- 14:17Speaker 4: next week and maybe weather, maybe moon, maybe you know,
- 14:21Speaker 4: even consistent winds, Like you said, if it's more consistent,
- 14:24Speaker 4: what are there anything? Is there anything to look up
- 14:26Speaker 4: like forward to Is it gonna be better or worse?
- 14:28Speaker 4: It's the same. Are you gonna switch patternings?
- 14:30Speaker 7: I think it's gonna be better because the temperature is going.
- 14:32Speaker 3: To be more favorable for better winds.
- 14:36Speaker 7: Okay, we had that warm, warm weather and variable winds
- 14:39Speaker 7: and then like the dreaded east wind it's it's I
- 14:43Speaker 7: don't see a lot of big deering east wims personally.
- 14:45Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:46Speaker 2: When you've got a big system like out in the
- 14:48Speaker 2: Atlantic over there, does that like you know, there's a
- 14:51Speaker 2: huge hurricane it's building. Do you feel like that gives
- 14:55Speaker 2: you good consistent weather or is that gonna be something
- 14:57Speaker 2: that makes it volatile?
- 14:59Speaker 7: If it if it makes it up in full force,
- 15:01Speaker 7: and yeah, you can get some some consistency four a
- 15:04Speaker 7: day or two out of it.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Four it turns the crap.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, So are you are you changing your patterns
- 15:10Speaker 4: the way you're hunting or what you're hunting?
- 15:11Speaker 3: What pattern you're hunting on.
- 15:14Speaker 5: The food?
- 15:15Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 15:15Speaker 4: Okay, I got you.
- 15:16Speaker 7: Yeah, so not so close to the food in the evening.
- 15:20Speaker 5: You know, I might back off.
- 15:21Speaker 7: One hundred and fifty yards, but I don't know if
- 15:23Speaker 7: he's going to break your daylight. You know, I prefer
- 15:27Speaker 7: to shoot him an hour before I don't. I'm not
- 15:30Speaker 7: a fan of gray light as I get older because
- 15:32Speaker 7: my vision isn't the best. So I like to shoot
- 15:34Speaker 7: them a little bit before dark.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Do you uh, I know off air will go We're
- 15:42Speaker 2: talking a little bit. You said that you got to
- 15:43Speaker 2: a field or an area and you were already on
- 15:46Speaker 2: the field early. Is that something that you've been noticing
- 15:48Speaker 2: lately or and you having to adjust kind of when
- 15:51Speaker 2: you hit in the woods.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Ye, usually I find that when the red moons. I'm
- 15:56Speaker 7: not I don't fully believe in the red moon, but
- 15:58Speaker 7: some in season, like early season, before pressure kicks in,
- 16:02Speaker 7: they were saying that deer were gonna be on the
- 16:04Speaker 7: field edge at like five o'clock and five o'clock.
- 16:07Speaker 3: The deer are pouring out.
- 16:08Speaker 2: So there's something to it for sure. If that's the case, man,
- 16:12Speaker 2: that's cool. As you look forward to the next week here,
- 16:15Speaker 2: if you had to rate the buck movement on a
- 16:18Speaker 2: scale of one to ten, what do you think that
- 16:19Speaker 2: looks like.
- 16:21Speaker 3: It's gonna get better?
- 16:22Speaker 7: I won't give it.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Probably a six, all right, dude. Yeah, six is encouraged
- 16:26Speaker 3: the time. It works every time. Man.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Yeah, well, thanks for giving us the report.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Man.
- 16:33Speaker 4: I appreciate you man, as a friend and as a
- 16:35Speaker 4: fellow hunter. Man, I know you you are worth your salt.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Man.
- 16:38Speaker 4: You do a good job and uh and you get
- 16:40Speaker 4: after the big old bucks. Yeah dude, so uh anyway,
- 16:43Speaker 4: I hopefully get talk to you again this year. But
- 16:45Speaker 4: if not, man, h I hope you get after him
- 16:47Speaker 4: and kill some big bucks there in Delaware and everywhere else.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Same with same as you guys. Save to you guys.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Thanks man, Now on the phone, Lucas Psycho, good buddy
- 16:56Speaker 4: of ours from North Dakota. He's uh, he's been hunting
- 17:00Speaker 4: as usual and uh, bucks tend to go down around you.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Man.
- 17:03Speaker 3: What else has been going on?
- 17:06Speaker 6: Not much, man, just just wrapped up a deer camp
- 17:08Speaker 6: with the guys and knocked down a couple of bucks
- 17:10Speaker 6: and one particularly pretty big one and and uh yeah,
- 17:13Speaker 6: fixing to go out this evening.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Here, Dude, you are a big buck magnet. Dude, I
- 17:18Speaker 4: don't understand it.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Just like as I'll say this, I'm statistically lucky.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Well, I would say, statistically you're pretty good deer hunter probably,
- 17:28Speaker 4: you know. But uh, anyway, man, what'd y'all so you
- 17:32Speaker 4: had two deer go down and camp?
- 17:35Speaker 5: Uh?
- 17:35Speaker 4: Was there any commonalities between how you guys were able
- 17:38Speaker 4: to take them, Like what patterns you're hunting them on
- 17:40Speaker 4: or whatever? Yeah?
- 17:41Speaker 6: Yeah, just strictly bed to bet to you know, bed
- 17:43Speaker 6: to food, right.
- 17:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:45Speaker 6: Alf Alfa fields. Elf alfa fields have been hot. You know,
- 17:48Speaker 6: that's the that's the green right now up here. So anyway,
- 17:51Speaker 6: we got alf alfa fields, we've been hitting those, hitting
- 17:53Speaker 6: those hard and hunting the transition areas for bead to food.
- 17:57Speaker 6: So you know, mornings have been hotter than been the
- 18:00Speaker 6: evenings for for the most part. Uh, they generally are,
- 18:03Speaker 6: especially when we get we got some ninety degree tempts
- 18:06Speaker 6: there over opening week and almost almost one hundred one day,
- 18:10Speaker 6: and uh so evening movement was almost nothing.
- 18:14Speaker 3: And then but what.
- 18:15Speaker 6: That does do over around here seems like the mornings
- 18:17Speaker 6: they they moved a little bit later on those hot days.
- 18:20Speaker 2: So dude, I love that strategy. That's the thing that
- 18:23Speaker 2: I'll love to do too. I love morning's early season.
- 18:26Speaker 2: And one of the things I've seen you do a
- 18:27Speaker 2: lot is uh like, find a buck and move in
- 18:31Speaker 2: on him. Is that still what y'all are doing kind
- 18:32Speaker 2: of here in this early season or are you hunting?
- 18:36Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 18:37Speaker 6: Absolutely, we you know, we uh we had we had
- 18:40Speaker 6: to make a make a good a good move on
- 18:43Speaker 6: one of the bucks, and.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Uh it took us.
- 18:45Speaker 6: It took us three four days to figure it out,
- 18:46Speaker 6: but we finally figured it out and got in on
- 18:48Speaker 6: him and he just you know, just so happened to
- 18:50Speaker 6: walk to my buddy rather than me, which is just
- 18:52Speaker 6: fine because that's what we're out there for, is we're
- 18:54Speaker 6: out there to share it share it with the guys
- 18:56Speaker 6: we want to share with, you know, so for sure,
- 18:58Speaker 6: So that's that's what it's all belt. So he smacked
- 19:01Speaker 6: him hard, shot him, and Uh, what.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Shit of the bucks where you're at have shared their
- 19:07Speaker 2: velvet so far?
- 19:07Speaker 3: Do you think? What's that? What percentage of the bucks
- 19:10Speaker 3: where you're at have shared their velvet so far? Do
- 19:12Speaker 3: you think?
- 19:14Speaker 6: Uh? Well, by right now we're probably looking at majority. Yeah,
- 19:18Speaker 6: So it was it was like fifty percent through the week,
- 19:20Speaker 6: it seemed like though. So the one buck we the
- 19:23Speaker 6: one buck my buddy Dustin got was was vent full velvet,
- 19:26Speaker 6: and then uh, the one that my buddy, my other
- 19:29Speaker 6: buddy got on the sixth was pretty much out cool.
- 19:34Speaker 4: So in the next week or so, are they still
- 19:37Speaker 4: is do you still feel like you're gonna because I
- 19:39Speaker 4: know when we first got on, you were talking to
- 19:41Speaker 4: me about off air about you're gonna be getting back
- 19:44Speaker 4: after him again. Are they gonna still be doing the
- 19:46Speaker 4: same type of things, bed to feed, same type of
- 19:49Speaker 4: betting and and also probably on alfalfa or you think
- 19:52Speaker 4: there's gonna be some sort of switch.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Nope, I think we're gonna stay stay the same.
- 19:57Speaker 8: As far as.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Movement, patterns for for the next few weeks here. For sure,
- 20:01Speaker 6: this week, like it's seventy degrees now, so and it's
- 20:05Speaker 6: supposed to stay stay seventy. A little bit of rain
- 20:08Speaker 6: moving through here this weekend, so it's uh it's gonna
- 20:11Speaker 6: be good.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And uh it looks like we're.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Still gonna warm up in like the eighties this next
- 20:15Speaker 6: coming week here, uh so, which is great because one
- 20:18Speaker 6: thing that sucks is if you just have stagnant weather patterns,
- 20:21Speaker 6: So just deer get a little bit.
- 20:22Speaker 8: Stagnant, kind of almost like they're bored.
- 20:24Speaker 6: Yeah, so, uh, you know, we get this this up
- 20:26Speaker 6: and down movements, whether it's even hot super hot to
- 20:28Speaker 6: super cool and off. I'll take it as long as
- 20:31Speaker 6: that that that that weather pattern is changing, you know.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so with the impending weather change coming, if you
- 20:37Speaker 2: had to rate what you think the next week is
- 20:39Speaker 2: going to be like on a scale of one to ten,
- 20:41Speaker 2: what do you think that's gonna look like for buck movement.
- 20:44Speaker 6: I think we're gonna be sitting right close to it,
- 20:46Speaker 6: right around an eight nine ground here. I think you're
- 20:49Speaker 6: gonna you're gonna you're gonna have some good opportunities and
- 20:51Speaker 6: and and uh you know, you're gonna move really well
- 20:54Speaker 6: for at least the next four or five days for sure,
- 20:56Speaker 6: and then we're gonna get a change and wins likely
- 20:59Speaker 6: with that that a d degree temps will get some south.
- 21:01Speaker 6: So what it does too, it opens up all these
- 21:03Speaker 6: different areas to hunt, you know, with the other wins
- 21:06Speaker 6: that you generally don't have. So you know, it gives
- 21:08Speaker 6: you those, you know, opportunities to move in on stuff
- 21:10Speaker 6: that you you haven't been to. So those first sit
- 21:13Speaker 6: hunts are are you know that those are gonna be
- 21:15Speaker 6: very valued available for guys.
- 21:17Speaker 3: So yeah, dude, you're so good at this.
- 21:21Speaker 8: Man.
- 21:21Speaker 4: I just I appreciate you having on the phone and
- 21:23Speaker 4: spending time with us man and just putting some wisdom
- 21:26Speaker 4: into the podcast. And uh, you know, appreciate your energy, dude.
- 21:29Speaker 4: You're always such an optimistic dude and just full energy.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Man. So I hope you uh, I hope you guys
- 21:34Speaker 3: have a great season.
- 21:35Speaker 5: Man.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Hell yeah you too. You guys too.
- 21:37Speaker 5: You know, I always appreciate chatting.
- 21:39Speaker 3: With you guys.
- 21:56Speaker 2: All right, now, I've got our buddy Brian Grossman from
- 21:59Speaker 2: the NDA and he has been doing a little early
- 22:02Speaker 2: season hunting in the Great State of Georgia brin.
- 22:04Speaker 3: What's going on?
- 22:06Speaker 9: Oh man, a whole lot just uh yeah, enjoying the season,
- 22:10Speaker 9: finally being open.
- 22:10Speaker 3: That's good man.
- 22:11Speaker 2: What's better than Georgia the hunting, the dogs or the braves.
- 22:16Speaker 5: Oh, it's it's the hunting for me.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Oh that's good. That's cool. Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 2: So you've been out in the early season. You had
- 22:26Speaker 2: some success. Shot you at dough with a recurve. That's awesome.
- 22:28Speaker 5: Man.
- 22:29Speaker 3: What what kind of pattern were you hunting when you're
- 22:31Speaker 3: out there?
- 22:33Speaker 9: Yeah, it's uh, it's it's pretty tough right now because
- 22:36Speaker 9: we're not I'm not seeing anything in the way of
- 22:40Speaker 9: acorns dropping. Still a little early to I guess to
- 22:46Speaker 9: see what's gonna.
- 22:47Speaker 5: Happen with those. But uh, you know, there are.
- 22:50Speaker 9: Some things like for simmons and muscadines that that you
- 22:54Speaker 9: can on this time of year. You know, if you
- 22:56Speaker 9: can find them and find some that are that are
- 22:59Speaker 9: being here, you know, that's that's always a pretty good bet.
- 23:03Speaker 9: But for the most part, it seems like, at least
- 23:06Speaker 9: where I'm at, they're kind of still on that that
- 23:09Speaker 9: summer browse pattern. You know, anything anything green out there,
- 23:13Speaker 9: you know, forbes, shrubs, tree leaves, you know, all all
- 23:17Speaker 9: that kind of stuff that that seems to be where
- 23:21Speaker 9: it's at right now, which, uh, which which can be
- 23:23Speaker 9: pretty tough.
- 23:24Speaker 5: Down here, because there's there's plenty of that to go around.
- 23:27Speaker 4: I heard that, man, So are you setting up on
- 23:29Speaker 4: you know, habitat transitions or what are you looking at
- 23:32Speaker 4: when it comes to I mean, if you've got a
- 23:33Speaker 4: bunch of forbes around, what are you what are you
- 23:35Speaker 4: really keying in on? What's the limited resource there?
- 23:39Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 23:39Speaker 9: I mean right now, until I do start finding that
- 23:43Speaker 9: that concentrated feed sign, I'm just sticking to cover, you know,
- 23:47Speaker 9: good heavy cover, trying to find you know, those entrances
- 23:51Speaker 9: and exit routes kind of on the periphery of good
- 23:54Speaker 9: cover and uh and you know, set up on that.
- 23:58Speaker 9: It's it's just hard to peg down a food source,
- 24:00Speaker 9: you know. I'm trying to hunt in the vicinity, you know,
- 24:04Speaker 9: with them feeding on forbes and greenery and that kind
- 24:06Speaker 9: of stuff. You know, clearcuts are always a great bet.
- 24:12Speaker 9: You know, thin pines around here where they've really thinned
- 24:14Speaker 9: the pines back and you get a good understore growth
- 24:18Speaker 9: or or you know, any any place where some kind
- 24:20Speaker 9: of natural opening you know, in the woods with that
- 24:25Speaker 9: understore growth can can be a good spot.
- 24:27Speaker 8: For sure.
- 24:28Speaker 2: There's a little bit of cool weather and some precipitous
- 24:31Speaker 2: precipitation in the forecast for a lot of the country
- 24:34Speaker 2: right now.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Is that something you got in Georgia coming up here too?
- 24:38Speaker 9: It is going to cool down a little bit for Georgia,
- 24:42Speaker 9: I guess, you know, starting I think maybe later this week, uh,
- 24:46Speaker 9: in the in more more low eighties as opposed to
- 24:49Speaker 9: like you know, upra eighties nineties that we've been having,
- 24:52Speaker 9: so that will definitely be welcome. Not a whole lot
- 24:56Speaker 9: of rain in the forecast for where I'm at. I'm
- 24:58Speaker 9: actually finally finally worked up a about a three quarter
- 25:03Speaker 9: acre food plot here on my place, which I'm excited about.
- 25:06Speaker 9: But yeah, ever since I worked the ground up, there's
- 25:09Speaker 9: no rain has happened and no rains in sight, so
- 25:12Speaker 9: I'm still kind of waiting to put the seed down
- 25:15Speaker 9: for that.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Shoot, man, Yeah, that's that. If there's hard and fall
- 25:19Speaker 3: from the sky, it's hard to get it there sometimes.
- 25:21Speaker 9: Yeah, No, no no sense in putting the seed down
- 25:24Speaker 9: until they you know, start to see some rain in
- 25:26Speaker 9: that far.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Are you prioritizing those cool days as the days you're
- 25:29Speaker 2: trying to get out in the woods, or you just
- 25:31Speaker 2: kind of taking it easy until the season kind of
- 25:33Speaker 2: progresses on.
- 25:36Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I'm a I'm an equal opportunity type hunter.
- 25:39Speaker 9: I'm getting out anytime I can, regardless of weather.
- 25:42Speaker 5: But yeah, I certainly man.
- 25:44Speaker 9: If I see it's going to be, you know, a
- 25:46Speaker 9: good cooler day, I want to be out there for sure,
- 25:50Speaker 9: Not not necessarily just because deer movement, but just because
- 25:53Speaker 9: it's it's a more comfortable time to be out there.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:56Speaker 4: So going into the next week, does anything change? You
- 25:58Speaker 4: still hunt and cover. Mean, you're not gonna get any rain,
- 26:01Speaker 4: so you're not gonna see any food, food plotting or
- 26:03Speaker 4: anything like that. If you were to go hunting this
- 26:05Speaker 4: next week, is it the same type of scenario or
- 26:08Speaker 4: are you're gonna change things up a little bit.
- 26:12Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I'll probably still be sticking the cover,
- 26:14Speaker 9: but every time I'm out there, I'm gonna be kind
- 26:16Speaker 9: of scout my way in, you know, looking for uh,
- 26:20Speaker 9: for that feed sign, because you know it's only only
- 26:22Speaker 9: a matter of time for for some make corns start
- 26:25Speaker 9: hitting the ground and uh, you know, those those patterns
- 26:29Speaker 9: start shifting a little bit, so it's always always looking
- 26:32Speaker 9: for that most recent sign.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:34Speaker 4: So on a scale of one to ten, what would
- 26:38Speaker 4: you assume buck movement is going to be like next week?
- 26:43Speaker 9: You know, i'd probably just in general for this time
- 26:46Speaker 9: of year, probably put it.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know six something like that.
- 26:51Speaker 9: I mean, I mean, you know, the deer gonna move regardless,
- 26:54Speaker 9: they're gonna move. It's just a matter of where and
- 26:58Speaker 9: being there. But like I said, with the on that
- 27:00Speaker 9: summer feed pattern, they don't they don't have to move
- 27:03Speaker 9: around a lot because of.
- 27:04Speaker 5: The cover and the food source are.
- 27:06Speaker 9: Kind of one of the save ye yeah, gotcha. Yeah,
- 27:10Speaker 9: i'd say kind of mid range there.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Awesome, man, Well, we appreciate your time. I hope you
- 27:14Speaker 4: get after him in Georgia once it starts cooling down.
- 27:16Speaker 4: I hope you get rain Man. And we're praying for
- 27:19Speaker 4: the same here. So uh, we'll talk to you later
- 27:21Speaker 4: on the season. Brian, All right, man, sounds good. You
- 27:24Speaker 4: gotta be safe out there all right now? I have
- 27:26Speaker 4: Christian Babcock from Hunter's Advantage. What's going on, dude?
- 27:30Speaker 8: Hey, how's it going guys? Good to talk to you again.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Yeah, we're good. Man, we're just chilling. You know.
- 27:35Speaker 4: We got a cold front and things are feeling like
- 27:38Speaker 4: Dearie out there. But there's no season opening Texas. You know,
- 27:42Speaker 4: there's only a few states open right now, one of
- 27:44Speaker 4: which is Nebraska, which is where you have been. And
- 27:48Speaker 4: I hear there's something in the water and the food
- 27:51Speaker 4: out there.
- 27:54Speaker 5: You're not lying.
- 27:54Speaker 8: There a good, good battle with some whitetail bucks and
- 27:57Speaker 8: Mulei's and then food poisoning too. It's kind of a trifecta.
- 27:59Speaker 8: Are you sure fever it might have been? It might
- 28:03Speaker 8: have been, guys, I'm not sure.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Well, so how'd the trip go, man?
- 28:07Speaker 4: I I'm kind of interested in what they were doing
- 28:10Speaker 4: this last week out there.
- 28:12Speaker 8: Yeah, it's been a couple of days over in kind
- 28:14Speaker 8: of the western portion of the state and then moved
- 28:16Speaker 8: over to more of the mixture of white Tail and
- 28:19Speaker 8: Mewley country. But we saw some pretty good buck movement
- 28:23Speaker 8: in the middle, you know, the early mornings and late
- 28:26Speaker 8: evenings like you'd expect kind of in September, and it
- 28:28Speaker 8: was awesome. We saw some good cold fronts too up there.
- 28:31Speaker 8: I mean many days with lows in the fifties, which
- 28:35Speaker 8: for someone that lives in Texas, like you guys, is
- 28:37Speaker 8: a is kind of wildest part of the year. But
- 28:39Speaker 8: it was.
- 28:39Speaker 3: It was a good hunt, man.
- 28:41Speaker 2: That is one of the nice things about going north,
- 28:43Speaker 2: you know for the early season. Is that nice whether
- 28:45Speaker 2: you get when you're out there.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Uh, you know, in the.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Past, especially the past few years, Nebraska's really suffered from drought.
- 28:53Speaker 2: This year has been a little better, but you know,
- 28:55Speaker 2: later towards the end of the summer it still got
- 28:57Speaker 2: really dry that it seemed like a lot of the
- 28:59Speaker 2: crops were in or were there some foul fields around.
- 29:03Speaker 8: Yeah, it seemed the majority of the stuff we were
- 29:05Speaker 8: seeing was in standing corn right now, and then a
- 29:08Speaker 8: lot of a cut and bailed alfalfa, which seemed to
- 29:11Speaker 8: be where a lot of those deer were spending their time.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Absolutely, Man, that's a good thing to key in on.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Did you feel like that alfalfa was better in the
- 29:20Speaker 2: morning or the evening or and was the corn the
- 29:22Speaker 2: inverse of that?
- 29:24Speaker 8: Yeah, the standing corn, we saw some deer around it
- 29:26Speaker 8: in the evenings, but you know, they get into that
- 29:29Speaker 8: stuff and kind of just disappear. So it seemed like
- 29:31Speaker 8: the morning and the evening was pretty consistent on the alfalfa,
- 29:35Speaker 8: and we had pretty good luck getting in between that
- 29:38Speaker 8: on on private and then some of those deep cuts
- 29:41Speaker 8: that are filled with cedars. It seem, you know, kind
- 29:43Speaker 8: of getting them on bed to feed filter and back
- 29:45Speaker 8: between food and bedding and those deep cuts, and we
- 29:48Speaker 8: saw some pretty good activity doing that.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Gotcha, so are you would you feel like you're sitting
- 29:53Speaker 4: closer to betting or closer to the food.
- 29:57Speaker 8: Closer to betting because there, you know, most of the
- 30:00Speaker 8: food that was on the public with standing corn, and
- 30:02Speaker 8: that's kind of a jungle to try to hunt in
- 30:04Speaker 8: and around this time of year. So we were key
- 30:07Speaker 8: and him where I'm betting, I'd.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Say, okay, So you know, if you were going to
- 30:11Speaker 4: be there this next week, would you be doing more
- 30:13Speaker 4: of the same or do you think things are going
- 30:15Speaker 4: to change it all?
- 30:17Speaker 8: I'd be doing probably the exact same thing we were
- 30:19Speaker 8: doing this week. Yeah, trying to get them going back
- 30:22Speaker 8: to betting off of food. That seemed to be a
- 30:24Speaker 8: pretty good tactic. I mean, there were several instances where
- 30:27Speaker 8: me and my buddy Gabe saw a deer, you know,
- 30:30Speaker 8: under one hundred and fifty yards and then once you
- 30:32Speaker 8: get in that country and you get an opportunity, you know,
- 30:35Speaker 8: and it's just kind of up to you to steal
- 30:36Speaker 8: the deal from there. So we were in the chips,
- 30:38Speaker 8: you know, between the food poisoning and that. But that's
- 30:42Speaker 8: exactly I'd do it again, just this time with a
- 30:44Speaker 8: good stomach.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I don't blame you. Man.
- 30:46Speaker 2: So were you spend a lot of time like on
- 30:48Speaker 2: the ground spot and stalking whitetail or do you feel
- 30:50Speaker 2: like setting up ambush doll is a better thing to
- 30:53Speaker 2: go right now?
- 30:54Speaker 3: Man?
- 30:55Speaker 8: What I love about that country is it's open and
- 30:57Speaker 8: you know, you can really see quite a way. So
- 31:00Speaker 8: we spend a lot good amount of time sitting up
- 31:02Speaker 8: on you know, ledges and just glassing and trying to
- 31:04Speaker 8: make moves from there. I'm sure somebody could. I just
- 31:06Speaker 8: know that I didn't feel like going out there and
- 31:09Speaker 8: using a saw for an hour on a cedar tree.
- 31:11Speaker 8: So that just sounded more my style with Spot and
- 31:14Speaker 8: stock this week.
- 31:15Speaker 2: It's a good way to sweat it up, even if
- 31:16Speaker 2: it is a kind of career, you know, man, looking forward.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Here, do you feel like the buck movement's going to
- 31:25Speaker 3: be nice?
- 31:25Speaker 2: You know, you said things are gonna be kind of
- 31:27Speaker 2: consistent and then what would you rate that on a
- 31:29Speaker 2: scale of one to ten?
- 31:32Speaker 8: Yeah, I saw on the next week, there's a few
- 31:35Speaker 8: days with showers that are going to be losing the forties.
- 31:37Speaker 8: I think I you'd see some pretty good buck movement,
- 31:39Speaker 8: maybe extending through the day, not just the first thirty
- 31:43Speaker 8: minutes to an hour of light. If I was to
- 31:44Speaker 8: go back this next week, and I'd be pretty excited
- 31:47Speaker 8: about it. Sadly I'm not, but i'd be pumped up
- 31:50Speaker 8: I was going back next week.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it's cool.
- 31:52Speaker 2: So what would you rate it on a scale of
- 31:54Speaker 2: one to ten for buck movement for next week?
- 31:57Speaker 8: Probably probably a four, which I would have rated the
- 32:01Speaker 8: last last week. Maybe a two. You know, it's still
- 32:04Speaker 8: early season hunting, but there's plenty of opportunity out there.
- 32:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:07Speaker 2: I appreciate the realistic approach on that too. A four
- 32:10Speaker 2: is still a pretty good day in the whitetail woods Man.
- 32:12Speaker 2: So that's a good report, dude. We appreciate the time,
- 32:15Speaker 2: and I'm glad you're feeling better because I know that
- 32:18Speaker 2: food poison and stuff's rough, dude, and I hope that
- 32:21Speaker 2: you don't have to encounter any more of that adversity
- 32:23Speaker 2: throughout the season. You've had enough so far, so from
- 32:26Speaker 2: here on as smooth sailing.
- 32:27Speaker 8: Right, that's right, Peton mind is here we go?
- 32:30Speaker 3: It sounds great man. Well we'll talk to you again.
- 32:32Speaker 8: See all right, thanks guys.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Really appreciate those guys and all the solid reports from
- 32:37Speaker 2: around the country. There's a lot of optimism right now,
- 32:39Speaker 2: and you should be optimistic too if you're not, and
- 32:42Speaker 2: you need to maybe hone up on some of your skills.
- 32:44Speaker 3: There's a really cool.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Article from Tony Peterson on effective bino use for hunting
- 32:49Speaker 2: white tailed deer on the Wired to Hunt feed. And
- 32:52Speaker 2: by the way, episode three of One Week of November
- 32:56Speaker 2: comes out this week. We'll link to that stuff below.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Also check out the podcast.
- 33:00Speaker 3: If you haven't, you get to hear a lot about
- 33:02Speaker 3: our day today.
- 33:03Speaker 2: There will be a new episode of that today. If
- 33:05Speaker 2: you're listening to this on Wednesday, this has been rut fresh.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Remember keep it fresh.
