- 0:00The mind, with its need to correlate facts, gather
- 0:05evidence, and develop proofs, finds it difficult, if not
- 0:09impossible, to credit ideas that seem to fall outside the logical
- 0:14reason. Based on the mind's limited
- 0:16understanding of the oneness of the Universal creation, the mind
- 0:22sets up certain rules and holds doggedly to them until such time
- 0:27as more facts come in to conveniently overturn the past
- 0:32rules. Witness the idea that the sun
- 0:35revolves around the earth, which only in recent centuries was
- 0:39overturned by a new understanding of the operations
- 0:42of the solar system. So the question of whether and
- 0:47to what extent an interaction between an individual and the
- 0:51forces of nature, for instance control of the weather, is one
- 0:55that has adherents on both sides.
- 0:59Those wedded to science and mental logic tend to disbelieve
- 1:02in this possibility, while those who have a more mystical bent
- 1:07can understand the way these forces interact in the unified
- 1:11field of consciousness. At the same time, the mind is
- 1:17being confronted with evidence in the field of quantum physics,
- 1:20which seems to defy the logical rules.
- 1:25Ideas such as quantum entanglement, where two
- 1:28particles distant from one another are linked together such
- 1:33that action by 1 represents action by the other, or the idea
- 1:38that the fact of observation of an event changes the result, or
- 1:43even the results that seem to show that certain current events
- 1:47change the past, all challenge the traditional mental rules in
- 1:52ways that make it clear that those rules are not only limited
- 1:56but arbitrary and incorrect when a greater picture and more facts
- 2:02can be brought together into a coherent picture.
- 2:06The question of the interaction between consciousness in the
- 2:09human being and the natural world is therefore open for
- 2:14review and consideration. We read stories of various
- 2:19shaman who have some connection to the natural world and who are
- 2:23thus able to exercise a certain amount of control over the
- 2:27weather. For instance, one of the most
- 2:29famous stories involves Tibet's famous Yogi Milarepa.
- 2:34In the years before he took up the practice of yoga.
- 2:38After his father died, his uncle and aunt stole away the family's
- 2:42wealth and left his mother, sister and himself in a
- 2:47dependent and destitute position.
- 2:50He yearned for revenge and went to study with a magician who
- 2:55taught him the secret of control of the weather.
- 2:58He went back to his village, called in a hailstorm and
- 3:02destroyed much of the village. Many traditions tell of the
- 3:08ability to control storms. Traditions also speak of the
- 3:12ability to bring needed rainfall to a region.
- 3:16Tales in the Puranas of India tell of how regions either had
- 3:20rainfall withheld or were provided with rainfall based on
- 3:25various actions of kings or curses made by Brahmanas who had
- 3:30been somehow insulted or harmed. The question of interaction
- 3:35between human individuals and the weather is one that has
- 3:38frequently come up all around the world in the tradition of
- 3:42the Abrahamic religions. There is the famous story of the
- 3:46catastrophic flood that, while neither caused by nor prevented
- 3:51by human intervention, yet was known in advance by Noah with
- 3:55sufficient time to build an ark and populate it with two of each
- 4:00species. Similarly, population centers
- 4:04were destroyed by climatic events, which were revealed in
- 4:08advance to Lot, who was told by God to depart to safety before
- 4:13the event took place. Many people experienced an event
- 4:18during the Mother's last balcony darshan in August 1973.
- 4:23It was uncertain that she would actually give darshan that day.
- 4:27On the morning of August 15th, 1973, the announcement was made
- 4:32for a late afternoon, early evening darshan time.
- 4:36People began collecting in the street below the balcony hours
- 4:39in advance. It was pouring rain.
- 4:43Shortly before the time of the darshan.
- 4:47The clouds parted, the rain stopped, and the mother came out
- 4:52to give her blessings to the crowd of the people in the
- 4:55street below. She went back inside and the
- 4:59rain promptly started up again. We also hear of instances where
- 5:05the sense of peace was so solid that nothing, even storms, could
- 5:10disturb it, as is related by the mother in an anecdote about Trio
- 5:14Robindo during a great cyclone. The mother notes quote.
- 5:20I have had innumerable examples of the power of right attitude.
- 5:25I have seen crowds saved from catastrophes by one single
- 5:29person keeping the right attitude.
- 5:32But it must be an attitude that does not remain somewhere very
- 5:36high, and leaves the body to its usual reactions.
- 5:40If you remain high up like that, saying, Let God's will be done,
- 5:46you may get killed all the same, for your body may be quite
- 5:50undivine, shivering with fear. The thing is to hold the true
- 5:55consciousness in the body itself, and not have the least
- 5:59fear and be full of the divine peace.
- 6:04Then indeed, there is no danger. Not only can attacks of men be
- 6:10warded off, but beasts also, and even the elements can be
- 6:14affected. I can give you a little example.
- 6:18You remember the night of the great cyclone, when there was a
- 6:22tremendous noise and splash of rain all about the place.
- 6:27I thought I would go to Sri Aurobindo's room and help him
- 6:30shut the windows. I just opened the door and found
- 6:34him sitting quietly at his desk writing.
- 6:38There was such a solid piece in the room that nobody would have
- 6:42dreamed that a cyclone was raging outside.
- 6:48All the windows were wide open. Not a drop of rain was coming
- 6:53inside. End Quote Reference Sri
