- 0:42wild that I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park.
- 0:48Be there. OK everybody, deep breath.
- 0:54I'm looking a little rough today.
- 0:56Time for me to clean up. Leaving for Daytona next week on
- 1:02Wednesday. I'm headed to Daytona next week
- 1:05on Wednesday. I will be racing nine nights at
- 1:10Volusia Raceway Park. I'll be driving for my dear
- 1:13friend Nick Hoffman. Cars going to look good.
- 1:18So I'm excited to get down there and win a Gator.
- 1:21Win a Gator. Oh, yeah.
- 1:24I'll tell you what, if I, if I would have not found dirt
- 1:27racing, I don't know what my life would have looked like.
- 1:31Dirt racing really saved me, gave me a lot to do after
- 1:37winning nine NASCAR Xfinity races in NASCAR.
- 1:45OK, everybody, it's Hall of Fame time.
- 1:49It is NASCAR Hall of Fame time and we've got Ray Hendrick going
- 1:55in. We got handsome Harry Gant going
- 1:59in and we got Kurt Busch going in.
- 2:03Let's take a let's take a second to talk about all three of them.
- 2:10Ray Hendrick, I don't know much about him.
- 2:12I know he's a bad ass. Congratulations Ray and well
- 2:16deserved handsome Harry Gant. Now I got a lot to say about
- 2:23Harry. Harry taught me a lot.
- 2:27I'm in an autograph session with Harry Gant and we're, I think
- 2:32we're at Lebanon, I-44 Speedway of all places, about 2 1/2 hours
- 2:37up the road here. So I signed my autograph.
- 2:44I just signed it on a hat. Harry looks at me and goes, boy,
- 2:49you write your name smaller. You give all of us more space to
- 2:54write. Scared me half to death.
- 2:58Harry taught me to write small on the bill of a hat because
- 3:04when we would do these autograph sessions, Brother Rusty, I, he
- 3:08don't get, you cannot get Rusty Wallace.
- 3:11Rusty is such a badass. Rusty would Rusty get a hat and
- 3:17he'd take it and he'd go and there'll be about 10 other
- 3:20drivers and they're like, where do I write?
- 3:25I always thought, I always thought it was such a badass
- 3:28move by brother Rusty. And we'd all try to find a place
- 3:32to write. Well, I didn't do that to Harry.
- 3:35I just, I just wrote my name normally.
- 3:38But he looked at me and he said, boy, when you sign these hats,
- 3:41you write your name small. You give all of us a place to
- 3:45write our names. That was my first bitch smack
- 3:51from handsome Harry. Yes, Sir.
- 3:52I said yes, Sir. My next thing about Harry is
- 3:59those jeans. He would wear jeans that were
- 4:04starched, and I think he still does today.
- 4:06I got some. I got some pitch.
- 4:08If Charlie edits this up, I'll, I got a picture of me and Harry
- 4:15at Trackside Live at Charlotte in 2025.
- 4:19I'm going to go back at that picture.
- 4:21But Harry was known for starched jeans.
- 4:25Those jeans had a line down the middle.
- 4:27They'd cut you. They'd cut you.
- 4:30But what was so awesome about the Cowboys back in the days,
- 4:34all our country western superstars like, you know,
- 4:38George Strait, they had those, those jeans starched.
- 4:44I'll tell you, another person like that was Mark Martin's dad,
- 4:46Julian, Julian Martin. He'd starch those jeans now
- 4:52around, around the Wallace house.
- 4:54Kim, my wife, she's a proud lady.
- 4:58She always took care of my clothes when I was in NASCAR.
- 5:01And she downed the hell out of those jeans And she she'd do her
- 5:04best to put a, put a, a line right in the middle.
- 5:08So back in those days, we believed in iron jeans.
- 5:12And boy, they looked good. That's a lost art.
- 5:19The other thing about Harry is everything I learned about Harry
- 5:24is not Harry racing. So Harry comes off at Turn 4 at
- 5:31Pocono and his car starts getting sideways on him.
- 5:36So anyway, they said, Harry, we would like you to run the
- 5:42rookies meeting, you know, for the rookies.
- 5:45The rookies always had to get there early and they'd ask a
- 5:47veteran to run the the rookies meeting.
- 5:50Harry's running the rookie meeting for Pocono.
- 5:55And he looked at all of us. He said, boys, he says now when
- 6:00you come off that turn 4 and your car starts to swerping on,
- 6:05you turn it left and lock her down just in that country.
- 6:11That's the way. So, you know, turn the last
- 6:15corner at Pocono, it's real wide sweeping and you're you're
- 6:20trying to give it all the gas you can to get down that long
- 6:23straightaway. Well, the ass in start coming
- 6:25out on you and you you try to save it and you go, you go like
- 6:29this and then you start chasing it like this.
- 6:33Then like this. Well Harry in that country
- 6:35voice, he'd call it swarping. He said when that car starts to
- 6:39swarping, you turn it left and lock her down.
- 6:46Saves your day and you won't hit the wall.
- 6:52I love Harry again. The next thing I know about
- 6:59Harry is when Harry was running the Grand American Division.
- 7:05I've saw a couple pictures out there.
- 7:07Rusty brother. Rusty raced Harry and in the
- 7:11Grand American division, really good division.
- 7:14They don't have it anymore, but it was all about Camaros and
- 7:18Firebirds. So I'm on the AT at this time.
- 7:24I'm cocky. I'm not a race car driver, but
- 7:27Rusty just got done winning over Richie Evans.
- 7:31Oh, yeah. We built our car right here in
- 7:34St. Louis, MO, a little town called
- 7:36Valley Park. We built that car in Valley
- 7:41Park, ran 200 and something mile an hour, and Rusty was lucky and
- 7:46able. I'm showing respect to Richie
- 7:48because we've lost to Richie Evans, but Rusty outrun Richie
- 7:52Evans that day and we got pictures out there.
- 7:55I'll post them. And we won.
- 7:59And in my cocky way, I'm going past Harry.
- 8:03And I say winning isn't everything.
- 8:09It's the only thing. And out of nowhere, Harry Gant
- 8:13goes. That's right, boy, I didn't know
- 8:16Harry was there. I was just acting silly.
- 8:22Now I realize how hard winning is.
- 8:25I should have never said that. I guess that's why they have
- 8:28podiums. First, second and third.
- 8:31It's hard to win. Only one person wins.
- 8:35I know a lot more about Harry. Harry's a good man.
- 8:39He's a working man. All right, We're at 9 minutes,
- 8:45so I got to let you all go. Have a great Wednesday,
- 8:48everybody.
