- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me covering the live action
- 0:13One Piece series from Netflix Season one, episode three, Tell No Tales.
- 0:22In this episode, we are meeting oos up for the first time, and
- 0:28we're getting the kuro pirate that I was hoping to see but sort of wondering
- 0:33if maybe they would dance around. There is some dancing, but it's not
- 0:39the type that I enjoyed the most. Welcome to Unspoiled. Welcome to the
- 1:03show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very much to Gabby for commissioning
- 1:08this episode. Yeah, you guys, this has been really fun because I've
- 1:15watched some of One Piece with Owen, but I've been watching this live action
- 1:21with him a lot more than I have watched the cartoon with him, and
- 1:26it's fun to see him being like, oh, oh, what kind of
- 1:30gum gum fruit did he get? Did he was it this one? Was
- 1:34it this one? And he just tries to like guess what's happening, and
- 1:38you know, there's a lot of guesses in there that I feel like,
- 1:41oh, that could have worked too, but he has a much better grasp
- 1:46of the spirit of what gumgum fruits are named than I did when I started
- 1:49this series, because every time I find out what certain fruits are called,
- 1:55I'm like, really, that's it, that's just okay, that's just what
- 1:59we're going with our right And I think that once this is because like,
- 2:04we don't get a reveal in this episode episode about what fruit he ate.
- 2:10It's just that we see a little bit of his powers, and that's kind
- 2:16of all we're getting in this one. It's just a little taste. So
- 2:22I'm really really excited because the atmosphere of this particular episode was so what's the
- 2:32word claustrophobic. I think I really found myself on edge, even though I
- 2:45know what's happening here, you know, I know all where we're heading,
- 2:51and I still found myself kind of going like, oh god, guys,
- 2:54yeah, I'll have to get out of here. This is no good,
- 2:57you know. So let's start at the beginning here, because as usual,
- 3:02I'm getting ahead of myself. But we begin things at Syrup Village, which
- 3:10I gotta tell you, guys, did not remember at all that that's the
- 3:15name of the village us Up comes from. I don't know if it was
- 3:20just not really put front and center in the animation the way it is in
- 3:23the live action, and you know, I have no doubt that it is
- 3:29mentioned, but it really didn't like hit for me at all, and I
- 3:35really kind of like that name, so I'm surprised that it didn't make more
- 3:38of an impression. But here we are, and we're getting to see how
- 3:46Usap, you know, has sort of lost everybody's goodwill by running through the
- 3:53entire village. We're seeing him as a little child here telling everyone that the
- 3:59pirates are coming, and he's ringing this alarm bell and getting everybody, like,
- 4:02you know, riled up. Folks are actually taking cover and going inside
- 4:09their homes and locking and shutting the doors and closing the shutters. Everybody is
- 4:15preparing for a fight. And then you have one person looking at him like
- 4:24a couple days later as he's running through and shaking their head, going mm
- 4:29nah, I don't think so. And the camera turns and we have got
- 4:33a grown oose up. I think he's meant to be probably like eighteen.
- 4:40I don't remember what age she's supposed to be in the show, but this
- 4:44guy to me looks like he's probably like twenty four, but I bet he's
- 4:46younger. Than that, and he is still playing the same game. And
- 4:55there's somebody who's like, you have got to get your life straightened out.
- 5:00There haven't been pirates in years, and the way you keep doing this shit
- 5:05is pathetic. And I really felt like the way he says pathetic, I
- 5:13was like, that was harsh, even though I have absolutely no doubt that
- 5:17were I to be someone living in this town, I would have just as
- 5:20little patience. We get the title card for this one, A lovely long
- 5:28nosed skull for the Jolly Roger. Delightful. I really enjoy this bit with
- 5:33a title card, just being a different like Jolly Roger every time. It
- 5:39makes me so happy. I'm excited to see what else we get coming up.
- 5:44Sara Francis Oosup is seventeen, same age as loofy Okay. For some
- 5:47reason, Usup feels like he should be older than Loufy, But uh,
- 5:53that's just sort of the vibe because Lufy always feels really young, Like he
- 5:58just feels younger than he's meant to be, you know, And that's not
- 6:02necessarily I'm not saying that as like a flaw in the show. It's just
- 6:09because of what his personality is like, so we go back then to our
- 6:15friends on the I don't know if this boat that Nami stole has a name
- 6:21actually now that I say that, but uh, you know, it's the
- 6:25little one that she took from the the I keep wanting to say, Red
- 6:30nose pirates. Is that what they're called? What is buggies? Are they
- 6:36called the buggy pirates? Are they called the clown pirates? What is the
- 6:42name of his like crew? But yeah, these guys, they're the ship
- 6:49that she stole from them has sprung a leak, and uh, the way
- 6:56that this is done is really funny because when a Zoro comes out, he
- 7:00says there's something wrong with a toilet, and she's like, there is no
- 7:04toilet on this ship, and there's a long pause before he just goes oh.
- 7:11And it really gave me the impression that he had taken a shit somewhere
- 7:17he shouldn't have. I don't think that's actually what's meant to have happened,
- 7:24but like, I'm just really curious, you guys, if I was the
- 7:28only one that sort of hurt it that way. They're called the buggy pirates.
- 7:38Oh, come on, Usually they're not named after the captain exactly are
- 7:42they They're usually sort of maybe I'm not remembering, And let's name the ship
- 7:47Nami's booty, says Sarah, and I absolutely will not. In the midst
- 7:53of all of this as well, is of course Lofy trying to draw the
- 7:57Jolly Roger, and I enjoy how completely exactly the same it is as the
- 8:05one in the animation. Florian says also thought Zoro took a dump there,
- 8:11right, thank you. Okay, I'm relieved it wasn't just me, But
- 8:16yeah, he draws this, and she's like, well, we're not a
- 8:20crew and this is my boat and you're not hanging that shit here. So
- 8:24when Zoro comes out, he sees it and just says, that's unique.
- 8:28And I really love the energy here. Do you know what Zoro is reminding
- 8:31me of when it comes to Loofy is any of you who have seen Ted
- 8:37Lasso. He's really giving The way that Roy is with his niece, Chloe,
- 8:43I think her name is just you know, as much as he is
- 8:50extremely gruff and cranky, there is a sweet tolerance to everything that he does
- 8:58that makes it feel like, I know he really loves her and cares about
- 9:03her, and it's just the you know, he has difficulty showing his emotions
- 9:09and being tolerant is probably as affectionate as he gets, which that's valid.
- 9:18You know, not everybody is made to be the super like, vocally supportive
- 9:24type. Let's see surf instance. Generally they're the ones with just captain's name.
- 9:33Pirates are the ones with the most egotistical captains. Okay, I like
- 9:37that. That makes sense. So now me, when she hears that there's
- 9:43like water being taken on, she runs in there. She finds the transponder
- 9:48that has been swamped with water, and it seemed to me like when she
- 9:52picks it up, it's still the snail in it is still moving, and
- 9:56it seemed okay. But she puts it up to her ear and evidently nothing
- 10:00happens. So she's really bummed about that, and obviously this is going to
- 10:05be an ongoing problem with her. I really felt for this little snail too.
- 10:09I know it's not even real, but you know how sensitive snails are
- 10:13to salt, and then I have to assume salt water is just gonna kill
- 10:18it. And also the fact that she has to put that thing in her
- 10:20ear really makes me deeply uncomfortable. I know that it's like you know,
- 10:26but no. So this is when Lufy starts talking about how we're gonna need
- 10:33a better ship to make it to the grand line, and he mentions the
- 10:39name straw Hat Crew, to which Zuro says, I don't get it.
- 10:46Demons are scary, but like a hat is not scary, And Lufy says,
- 10:52who says pirates have to be scary? And I love how not Me
- 10:58and Zorro don't make eye contact here. They look like toward one another,
- 11:07but they don't lock eyes. And there's something about that gesture that I love
- 11:11in that they're both clearly not really on the same page as Loofy. But
- 11:18they aren't on the same page as shit. They're either they're not a pair.
- 11:22It's not like us against Loofy. They feel they are very separate from
- 11:28both people they are sharing this boat with. And I love the question of
- 11:35like, who says pirates have to be scary? Well, that's a good
- 11:37fucking question. Who says Indeed, that's another element of him wanting to be
- 11:43a different kind of pirate. And I just really enjoy this ongoing I'm gonna
- 11:50prove you wrong on this kind of thing. That's going with him, and
- 11:54the way that, of course Zorro interprets things because Zorro is a pirate hunter,
- 12:00but also Nami because she has been victimized by pirates in a really specific
- 12:03way and clearly has her own thing going on there. But yeah, Lufy
- 12:11says, the point is, we need a new ship. Where do we
- 12:13get one? And she points out that the nearest ship, the nearest area
- 12:18is the Gecko Islands, and I think we can make it there before our
- 12:22ship sinks. And it's interesting because once they get there, it's made really
- 12:28clear that Nami had fully expected we were going to steal a new ship,
- 12:35and Lufy is aghast, like to him, I mean, what steal it?
- 12:41No, no, no, what why would we do that? Like
- 12:45that's extremely rude. We wouldn't do that. And I just really enjoy the
- 12:54the fact that each of them finds the other person's position on this like incomprehensible,
- 12:58you know. But for now, we are going to the Marines.
- 13:03Now, I'm going to kind of cover everything that's going on with Garp and
- 13:09Kobe in one shot, because it's honestly, it can be boiled down to
- 13:16like only a few sentences and that isn't. I don't mean that to sound
- 13:22like I'm saying this is way too drawn out. It didn't need to be
- 13:26this long. That's not what I'm saying at all. What I mean is
- 13:31that we get show, don't tell, which I like, and the show
- 13:37takes longer to do than the telling of which is how it should be.
- 13:43So the way that this unfolds is, first we have Helmepo, who has
- 13:50tied a not in the rigging that is not awesome, get it so funny.
- 14:01And Kobe, who has been at sea and knows what he's doing,
- 14:07spots that it is a weak point and he goes and fixes it because he's
- 14:13doing his goddamn job. And how Meppo spots him doing this and gets extremely
- 14:18offended. It's like a combination of simply, I can't believe that you're calling
- 14:24into doubt that I know how to do things, But mostly it's I am
- 14:28outraged that you, an inferior cadet, are questioning me considering my position on
- 14:39this ship, my position amongst everything because of who my daddy is. And
- 14:45uh as soon as he gets in Kobe's face on this, of course,
- 14:52then we have Garb who comes out and wants to know who tied that knot
- 14:54and how Meppo fully thinks Garb is about to yell at the person and who
- 15:00did it, so he throws Kobe under the bus, so he thinks and
- 15:03it's like, oh, yeah, he's the one who did it. And
- 15:07it turns out Kobe did a great job, and Garp can tell that he's
- 15:11like been on the sea before and knows what he's doing. And I don't
- 15:16know the way that Garp says the next line, it indicates to me that
- 15:22he saw the bad not that Helmepo tied, but he basically just says,
- 15:26to Hellmepo, I really expected better out of you, like your dad should
- 15:30have taught you more by now. It's kind of inexcusable that you don't know
- 15:33more. And this is one of those moments where I fully believe that this
- 15:39ship is like too small for Helmepo to get away with too much. But
- 15:45if we weren't on this ship, I would feel like maybe Garp was making
- 15:48things worse for Kobe in the long run, because somebody like Helmepo, if
- 15:54they are able to just like pinch and poke and bully person in private into
- 16:02giving them credit, helmepa would absolutely do that shit, like that's on his
- 16:07personality. So I for a minute I was sort of like, ah,
- 16:12man, dude, I know what you're trying to do. And I love
- 16:15this because I don't want him to keep like lording it over Kobe. But
- 16:21in a way, isn't this making things worse? And I stepped back and
- 16:25thought about it and decided I don't think it is making things worse. I
- 16:27think that Helmepo is too much of a coward to really do anything when everybody
- 16:33is in such close proximity. But could be wrong about that. We shall
- 16:37see. And overall, like the vibe that you get from garb Oh,
- 16:45I'm sorry, there's a bunch of people here in the chat, Serfem says,
- 16:49I love Lufy's main reason to be a guess at stealing the ship wasn't
- 16:52hating the idea of stealing in general, but that if the ship is going
- 16:56to be part of the crew, they shouldn't treat it. So yeah,
- 17:00it's very much like, oh my god, that is so ghast, Like
- 17:03this ship is supposed to be a member of the crew and we're just gonna,
- 17:06like what rip it off from somebody? Like no, and Saraphim says,
- 17:12between Garp and Bogart paying attention to the newbies, hum up oing getting
- 17:15away with anything. I keep forgetting about Bogart too. That's a good point
- 17:18because he really does have his finger on the pulse of everything. So yeah,
- 17:26this this like culminates in Garp. He wants to play a game against
- 17:38Kobe, and I can't remember the name of this game, but whatever it
- 17:45is. Kobe at first is losing, and Garp tells him, Bro,
- 17:52you are overthinking everything. You have got to just go for it and stop
- 18:00worrying so much, which I am so guilty of overthinking. I would absolutely
- 18:07be in Kobe's shoes here. And he tells Kobe, you've got to start
- 18:11acting decisively. And what he does is institute's a time limit on how long
- 18:18Kobe can take before he makes his next move, which I like. This
- 18:25is something that's kind of a great hack in general, if you are somebody
- 18:29who struggles with indecision, or if you are somebody who struggles with like procrastination
- 18:34as well, deciding to like put a timer on and just do as much
- 18:40as you can get done within that timer's limit, it's really really shocking you
- 18:47guys, how much you can get done in such a short time. Like
- 18:51I have found that a big part of my procrastination is due to and I
- 18:56anticipate things are going to take a lot longer than they actually end up taking.
- 19:00So I will put something off because I have this like, oh,
- 19:04it's going to be at least an hour to get it done, maybe longer.
- 19:07And then I put twenty minute timer on and I'm like, let me
- 19:11just do what I can for twenty minutes, and I finish. I finish
- 19:15it in twenty minutes, and then I have to step back and be like,
- 19:18oh my god, I've been putting this off for so long because I
- 19:22thought it was going to take ages, and it just was twenty minutes and
- 19:26I had been putting it off for so long. Like just a tip from
- 19:32me to you, but yeah, this kind of thing of being like you
- 19:37need a time on your turn. Anybody who has played a like board game
- 19:44with somebody who is really indecisive knows exactly this feel. This is the kind
- 19:49of thing that you have to do with certain players because otherwise the game goes
- 19:53on for fuckingever. And yeah, I just really appreciate the whole way that
- 20:02Garp is like taking Kobe under his wing, because like we know, and
- 20:06I'm really kind of relieved at the way this shook out. I am at
- 20:11a point in the animated series where this has been discovered, like I have
- 20:17gotten to the point where they reveal of Kobe and Helmepo being taken Undergarp's wing
- 20:22and taught I now know, but that takes so much longer in the animated
- 20:27show to get to. And if this live action had come out when I
- 20:34wasn't as far along in the anime, this would have spoiled me potentially,
- 20:44which I think would you guys are so conscious of that, I don't think
- 20:47you would have commissioned it. So I'm really relieved that I got to the
- 20:52point in the anime where this is revealed so that I was allowed to watch
- 20:57the live action because I could easily see it just being like, you know,
- 21:04a fifty episodes too early, and then I wind up having to miss
- 21:11out on the live for such a long time, which would have broken my
- 21:15heart. So anyway, this ends with how much Oh he comes in and
- 21:23I love. I don't know what he thought Garp was doing. I think
- 21:29that he was expecting to come in and find like Kobe being punished by Garp
- 21:33somehow, or Kobe doing like I don't know, swabbing the decks, like
- 21:37I genuinely don't know. But it's very clear that when he comes in and
- 21:42finds the two of them just playing a game, he doesn't know what to
- 21:48think of that. And it's like a very unwelcome revelation that the two of
- 21:52them are just fucking chilling like bros. And that's not a good sign.
- 21:59If you are trying to kiss somebody's ass and you come in and find out
- 22:03that they have been like hanging with a different person and having a good time,
- 22:07that spells disaster for your little plan. So anyway, in the end,
- 22:15Kobe gets promoted above Helmepo, and he's what Garb says is nepotism will
- 22:26only get you so far. And I just kind of enjoy that the nepotism
- 22:30is being straight up pointed out in you know, this is not subtext,
- 22:37this is the text. I'm here for it. I love this, and
- 22:40Helmepo, I'm really like, just rise to the challenge, bro. Like
- 22:45I he is such a goon, but I think he is potentially capable.
- 22:52You know, it's just the sort of thing where like, are you going
- 22:56to take him at his word or are you going to sulk and not do
- 23:00what you are capable of doing because you just feel away about it, which
- 23:06I will confess I have been guilty of in the past, Like I'm not
- 23:11too good to admit that. I have definitely had moments where somebody has called
- 23:15me out for sort of like taking it easy on myself, and I really
- 23:19didn't appreciate it. I didn't like being called out that way, and I
- 23:22sort of sulked. And you're only hurting yourself. They're pointing it out because
- 23:27they are aware you can do better than you're doing, which is a compliment
- 23:33really. Like so anyway, that's pretty much everything for Kobe and Helmepo.
- 23:40But so let's see, Oh, Cirfum says, to be fair, when
- 23:47it was commissioned, none of us knew the details and just assumed. But
- 23:49while it does make a few reveals earlier than in the anime, it's all
- 23:52things you are well passed, Okay, cool. Yeah, I didn't really
- 23:56think about that. I keep thinking that y'all had commissioned it like once it
- 23:59came out, but it was before it came out. But yeah. So
- 24:04anyway, let's get back into things with when is it Syrup Village? So
- 24:15actually I'm gonna bounce really quickly over to Buggy because we get a little thing
- 24:22with him. He is, uh, I love this so much getting his
- 24:29parts together out of the crates after finally having gotten back to his huge tent
- 24:36after being kicked through the wall of it while tiny, and this wild looking
- 24:44fucking guy with gills in his neck comes in and Buggy tells him we're closed,
- 24:53and this guy says, our along wants a word. And when he
- 25:00he says our Along wants a word, he's out of sight, and Buggy's
- 25:03back is to the guy and facing us, and you can see his whole
- 25:07posture change, like it's very clear to him. Arlong frightens him, like
- 25:14this is not somebody to play with, and he knows that. But I
- 25:18think he just interprets this guy as being a flaky a lackey. I was
- 25:22gonna say a flunky, and then I said a lackey, and then I
- 25:25made it a flacky. I don't know, maybe flaky is the new thing,
- 25:27guys. Maybe I could turn that into something. But he doesn't take
- 25:34this dude seriously and he tries to like fight back, and it just immediately
- 25:41he gets knocked out. It's like embarrassing. Frankly, I really kind of
- 25:48felt for him on this one. But we see later that our along is
- 25:56expecting tribute because he has been getting shitit in Arlong's territory and he has not
- 26:04paid the piper. So his solution is to suggest that maybe the people Arlong
- 26:12should really be concerned with are the straw Hat Pirates. I don't think he
- 26:19calls them the straw Hat Pirates yet. I'm not sure that name is anything,
- 26:23but uh yeah, he just basically sort of goes bull, what about
- 26:29them? And as much as like Arlong is no fool, he's not like
- 26:37letting Buggy off the hook here. He is interested in what it is that
- 26:41Buggy is saying. And let's take a step back here and talk about Arlong.
- 26:48You guys, is this dude scary or what? I am so excited?
- 26:56Like he looks scary in the previews for were but the previous you see
- 27:02him for only an instant. The main thing that you get in the preview
- 27:06is his voice, which is spectacular. His voice is it's so echoing and
- 27:14throaty. It sounds like he's talking into a coffee can, Like I don't
- 27:18know how he's doing this. I have to assume that this is some kind
- 27:22of post production that they do on his voice, but he sounds so rad
- 27:27But it's one thing to really sound intimidating, and it's another thing to watch
- 27:32the character and see how he carries himself. And I found him to be
- 27:37genuinely alarming. This is the guy that you feel very clearly he is a
- 27:48step or two steps up from Buggy in terms of like danger, And I
- 27:56just really am excited about how great this show has been with casting, with
- 28:03nailing the tone like this is not easy, you know. It's the sort
- 28:07of thing that it's real easy to sit back and complain about after the fact,
- 28:12and we can all say, like, well, here's where they clearly
- 28:15went wrong, and it's easy for us to tell, you know, in
- 28:19hindsight, but in terms of like how to do it well. While you're
- 28:26putting together everything from scratch, things can sort of get lost a little bit.
- 28:32And I get the sense that the people who worked on this really knew
- 28:37the show well and liked the show for what it was and wanted to honor
- 28:42that in a very specific way that I think comes across a lot here.
- 28:48I just there's there's a respect paid, you know, to the material.
- 28:55And I do think that what they are changing and what they're tightening up is
- 29:00so far across the board. I'm one hundred percent behind pretty much every choice
- 29:06they have made. But I think that the changes that they have made are
- 29:14also in respect, like they're going, well, these couple of plot points
- 29:18are really interesting, So what if we tighten things up so that we could
- 29:23get to those sooner, or so we could make the timing of this make
- 29:26more sense or whatever. So I'm not at all a person who has the
- 29:33attitude of like, if you like something, you can't change anything about it.
- 29:37I have never been that type. And in fact, I think if
- 29:41you are trying to change the way you're telling a story from a book to
- 29:47a movie, or a book to a TV show or anime to live action,
- 29:52there have to be changes otherwise what's the point. And I think all
- 29:55the changes that they have made are really really smart and feel like they are
- 30:02for the betterment of the like pacing and everything. So arlong, Yeah,
- 30:11I can't wait to see more of him. That's going to be delightful.
- 30:14Sorry about the dog's barking, if you can hear that, So all right
- 30:19we go. We go to the scene where Loofy sees the Mary for the
- 30:25first time, and yet another thing changing it to live action. In the
- 30:30anime, the marriage just sort of appears like as a gift, you know,
- 30:36so to all of them when they are ready to leave, and it's
- 30:41like that's a thing in the anime is that people could build a whole ship
- 30:47practically overnight, Like it's very, very quick, and the show is establishing
- 30:52that this ship exists already, and you know it's not completely done from the
- 31:00way that it's being portrayed here, but uh, it's something that Loufy has
- 31:06his eye on right away. And it turns out that uh, oh my
- 31:14god, Usap I wanted to say, sanjy Oosap is on the ship and
- 31:18he's like cleaning things out. He tries to present himself as having a much
- 31:22higher tier sort of job than he really does, and I love the reverence.
- 31:30Like Lufy looks at the figurehead and raises his hand to it really slowly,
- 31:36like is this real? Is am I seeing this? And there's just
- 31:41something so sweet about it, like you guys know, I have never really
- 31:45been particularly into the design of the Going Mary. I found this ship like
- 31:52Figurehead to be kind of weird and whatever. But again, it feels like
- 31:59somebody really respecting the source material here, and I have to imagine that this
- 32:06actor, he's like channeling this moment of playing this incredibly iconic role and seeing
- 32:17the fucking ship for the first time. Like I don't think this actor is
- 32:22actually seeing it for the first time, but you know what I'm saying,
- 32:24Like, the whole approach here feels very much like I can't believe I get
- 32:34to be here and be the one doing this, and I just really love
- 32:38the awe of this moment. So there's a little back and forth here where
- 32:45USAP tells him all of these unlikely things about how the ship is like,
- 32:50you know, the fastest top of the line, pure luxury, and I
- 32:55don't know how much of the technical terms about like you know, the way
- 33:00it's built inside, how much of that is correct. We know that he
- 33:04is a born liar, so I'm not like he may not be lying entirely.
- 33:13There's certainly a possibility he's completely telling the truth. I don't know quite
- 33:17enough, so I won't cast aspersions, but he really has like a bit
- 33:25of a bonding moment here with Loofy, And I really want to talk about
- 33:34the actor who plays Oosap for a second, So usop beloved character. You
- 33:40guys know how much I have grown to love him. He was somebody who
- 33:45really frustrated me a lot at first, and as time passed, I just
- 33:50was like, oh my god, I just felt for him so much,
- 33:52especially as as a character who is in and amongst people with unbelievable abilities,
- 33:58and he himself does have any like. He starts off with no real gift
- 34:05beyond being able to use a sling shop pretty well and lying his ass off,
- 34:09and the only other person who doesn't have any like superpowers is Nami.
- 34:17So he is somebody that I was really sort of like, I wonder how
- 34:23they're going to cast and how this guy is gonna pull it off, because
- 34:28I didn't warm to us up right away. I found him difficult to like
- 34:32initially due to a combination of how much he lies and the fact that he's
- 34:38a coward and there and there was also like the weird aspect of his character
- 34:46where he is so like proud of the fact that his father never came home
- 34:53again, and from the little bit you get in this episode, it feels
- 34:59to me like they're going to handle that a bit differently, because there's a
- 35:01moment where Lufy says, I've met your dad, I know him, and
- 35:07he says, like you've hung out, and when Lufy says yes, Usup
- 35:12says oh that's cool and seems like truly saddened by it, which is the
- 35:22energy that I would expect but that you don't really get much of in the
- 35:27show. So I think they're going to go in a slightly different direction with
- 35:32it. But because of the way it was done in the anime, I
- 35:37was always just sort of like, I don't feel like I understand you Usup,
- 35:40Like you are giving your dad a pass when he should have been there
- 35:45for you, and you seem to like be glad that he wasn't, or
- 35:51I don't know, if it's supposed to be that he's just really making excuses
- 35:53and telling himself a story about how he's okay with it, and it's supposed
- 35:58to be that he's really not, but it felt like he was so anyway,
- 36:01all that said, I felt like this actor does a really nice job
- 36:07of getting across that this is a likable, good natured dude who is like
- 36:20he means well always, you know, but also is kind of like can't
- 36:30help himself. Like there's much more of a sense of I've got to talk
- 36:35myself up because where I'm coming from is so humble that I don't want to
- 36:43reveal how like basic my origins are. In like, I guess I'm saying
- 36:52that he's bringing a tiny bit of a sense of shame that's motivating the lying,
- 36:58whereas in the anime it was very much like I'm just lying because I
- 37:06can at any given moment, which is certainly a way to go. But
- 37:10I feel like adding this layer of like I've got to keep it hidden from
- 37:15people what the truth is, and so I'll lie as a distraction that feels
- 37:22more real and understandable to me. And also he has an ease to him
- 37:32as well, which I feel like is going to be really nice when we
- 37:37start to see more of him, to see that in contrast with when he's
- 37:40really really afraid, there is he has a little bit of swagger, a
- 37:45little bit, not a lot, but it really comes through as like part
- 37:51of the lying, you know. So anyway, this whole thing. I
- 37:57really enjoyed this first meat. And eventually when they say that they want to
- 38:01buy the ship, he's talking about how you know, you've got to talk
- 38:06to the person who owns the shipyard. So we have them all brought over
- 38:12to the estate, where there's a momentary confrontation between the cook and oosup,
- 38:22and before things can really begin to get mixed up, here comes Kaya,
- 38:27and the actress playing Kaya does such a good job of being simultaneously extremely sweet
- 38:35and also looking really really unwell. And you guys, I was so excited
- 38:42so Captain Kuro is this This actor is fucking killing it. He is so
- 38:55good, he is eating up the scenery. I am so delighted with him.
- 39:04And he does the fucking like adjusting his glasses with the palm of his
- 39:07hand thing that you guys know, the first time I saw him doing this,
- 39:09I was like, what the fuck is with him adjusting his glasses that
- 39:13way? That's so weird. And how delighted I was at the reveal of
- 39:17why he does it this way. And I'm so excited about them keeping that
- 39:23detail. I know that it's like, of course they kept that detail,
- 39:27but I just you know, and this actor is perfect at being extremely precise
- 39:36and polite, but also radiating like a sinister sort of vibe that makes you
- 39:44go, ooh ah, you know what, I have a I have a
- 39:50thing, and you would just find a reason to not be around him anymore.
- 39:54This dude, it's so good, you guys. I'm so excited.
- 39:59And when he he really begins to like unleash the ugly side of himself.
- 40:07He's genuinely really scary. I was so pleased. So we have the conversation
- 40:16about whether they can come in and have dinner. He doesn't want her to
- 40:22for we know what reasons, but at the moment, It's Kaya's birthday and
- 40:28she can sort of just be like, come on, it's my birthday.
- 40:30Let me do what I want. So everybody is invited in, but they
- 40:35are going to have to have baths and change into something more formal before they
- 40:40are allowed to have dinner with her. And this gives us a scene of
- 40:46just Kaya and oos up together where he is storytelling and she is very taken
- 40:52with the stories that he's telling, but also as she's laughing and enjoying herself,
- 40:58she is still coughing and made really clear like she is not doing great.
- 41:05So this, uh, there's a really interesting scene. It's kind of
- 41:10funny because I mean, you guys know. So there's a scene where Namia
- 41:19is getting changed and she is really feeling a bit of a way about this
- 41:27massive closet full of clothes that are invaluable and just open for her to choose
- 41:35whatever she wants. She is somebody who doesn't have a lot, and if
- 41:39she could just like sell all these clothes, you'd probably have, you know,
- 41:43enough money to make up the difference on the debt that she's trying to
- 41:47repay. But she talks a lot about how like the rich don't have the
- 41:54same emotions you and I have. They don't understand caring about things the way
- 42:00that you and I do, And what this is meant to be is a
- 42:07bit of like her learning that the rich have feelings too, because later on,
- 42:14when she actually talks to Kaiya, she finds out all of the clothing
- 42:19in here belonged to Kia's mother, who died at sea, and Kia hasn't
- 42:23had the wherewithal to go through it and sell or donate things because she misses
- 42:30her parents so much that she still hasn't really coped and then Nami feels embarrassed
- 42:37at the fact, Like you don't see her be embarrassed externally, but it's
- 42:40very clear that inside she's having a little bit of a like, Wow,
- 42:46I was really hard on her, and to find out how it actually is,
- 42:52I guess I was pretty wrong about that. But you guys know that
- 42:57I have just got absolutely no fucking patient for the rich at this moment.
- 43:01So while I understand the let's like have this moment and Provenami wrong, most
- 43:09of me was agreeing with her, especially like the rich don't have the same
- 43:14emotions. Kaya is a very different case because she's like terminally ill and being
- 43:19manipulated by an external force. But honestly, when there are like people out
- 43:23there suffering and you have a huge amount of like possessions that you could sell
- 43:29and do some good with and you just aren't, it's very difficult for me
- 43:32to not be like, do anything, do fucking anything. So, yeah,
- 43:39her ranting against the rich, it's supposed to be a teachable moment,
- 43:45but I was frankly just nodding my head most of the time, because,
- 43:49like I am a firm believers there's a type of rich, you know,
- 43:53there's a lot of people who when you talk about fuck the rich, they
- 43:55think that you're coming at them, and it's like, are you a multimillion
- 44:00No, then you're not the person I'm talking about. But I really do
- 44:04firmly believe there is a level of rich you cannot achieve unless you are a
- 44:15bad person, like they're just to me. There is a threshold where what
- 44:22you have is more than adequate, and you should reach that and then be
- 44:28like, Okay, well, mostly I'm just going to give the rest of
- 44:30this away, and if you don't feel the obligation to do that, I
- 44:37genuinely think there's something wrong with you. So I am you know, not
- 44:45trying to say again, Kaya is exact because her situation is very unique.
- 44:52But mostly I do tend to agree that like, the emotions of the super
- 44:58rich are not the same as ordinary people, because I don't know how you
- 45:00walk around in a regular ass village a half mile from your house where everybody
- 45:08is like scraping by and don't do something to help them. But this is
- 45:15just me on my usual fuck the rich soapbox as I often get up on
- 45:21there, and I will be getting stepping down from it now. Sorry,
- 45:27sarahim says, given what we know of the richest, most powerful people on
- 45:30the planet, the celestiald dragons, really doubt Oda is trying to paint the
- 45:35rich as sympathetic in general, just that Kaya herself is I would agree with
- 45:38that. Yeah, And that's what I mean, is like it felt like
- 45:43a bit of a but again, her her situation is just extreme. It's
- 45:49just extreme. She has an extreme situation going on. So let's see.
- 45:55I'm trying to jump around here because I want to make sure I have enough
- 45:59time to talk about everything, because I'm already running out of time. So
- 46:02we get the scene in the kitchen where it's revealed that the blue haired girl
- 46:07and the chef are both in on the whole killing Kaya thing, and they
- 46:16have poisoned the soup. He almost takes a taste of it because he is
- 46:23just on autopilot as a chef. We have Kuro coming in and holding out
- 46:30a glass and saying what is this? And I was not totally clear what
- 46:37it was about the glass that he has an issue with. It's I'm not
- 46:43sure that we're actually supposed to see what it is. But and he has
- 46:47those like white gloves on as well. In this scene, but oh,
- 46:52it's got a little chip. Wait, there's a little chip and like a
- 46:57stain I think is what we see it zeros in on it, but it's
- 47:00like really really quick, Yeah, there it is. It's it is pretty
- 47:07gross, like she should have caught this. But he picks us up,
- 47:12says what is this and drops the glass and it causes her to jump in
- 47:17such a way that I really appreciated. It feels like her reaction is out
- 47:22of proportion to what just happened. But because her reaction is out of proportion,
- 47:27it gives you an indicator that this guy is extremely dangerous and will pop
- 47:30off at any second. Like you know what I'm saying, anybody who has
- 47:34lived with a person who is really volatile and abusive. It can start with
- 47:38just them trying to scare you in a silly, almost petty way, and
- 47:44begin to snowball pretty quickly into them like really acting out, and we go
- 47:52from there to the dinner itself, which I said the word claustrophoe tense,
- 48:01I mean, just really painful to sit through. And you know, it's
- 48:07like remarkable to me the way that Lufy moves through this speech that he gives
- 48:14about trying to buy the ship with the ease of somebody who is completely unaware
- 48:20of the tension, being like so thick you could cut it with a knife.
- 48:24It's completely in character. But it just for me. I'm like,
- 48:28how are you able to? Like, he gets up on the table and
- 48:32walks over everybody's food toward her, like in the most inappropriate fashion, and
- 48:37I'm just watching him, like, oh my god, loofy, sir,
- 48:40please sit, But no, he will not sit. He will be heard.
- 48:45And there's also, of course her wanting to have some of the fish,
- 48:49but she is instructed no, she has to have what's good for her
- 48:52constitution, which the soup is blue, and I believe that the tea that
- 48:59she's being has been blue as well, which is supposed to signal that the
- 49:02same poison is in the tea as in the soup. It's just much more
- 49:07concentrated. And I really liked that Nomi tries to stick up for her a
- 49:14little bit and just be like, well, it's your birthday, you should
- 49:17be able to eat what you want, and Kuro like chimes in and she
- 49:23just looks at him and says, so she can't speak for herself, and
- 49:29just really kind of puts him in his place for a second in a way
- 49:31that I've truly admired. But all of this results in him getting irritated and
- 49:43basically being like, you guys have to get out of here. Kaya is
- 49:47like, absolutely not, it's way too late. They can't be out there.
- 49:52Let them stay the night, and he agrees, but says that they
- 49:55have to be gone by, you know, first thing in the morning.
- 50:00So then we have the scene in the wine cellar and I can't remember,
- 50:07guys the remind me the name of the sheep man, but he is the
- 50:13one that's like trying to represent Kaya, and he has seen that Kaya is
- 50:16supposed to be handing over all of the shipbuilding business to Kuro, and he
- 50:23thinks this is extremely suspect and wants to talk to Kaya about it, and
- 50:30Kuro isn't going to let him. And this is the first time that we
- 50:36see his powers and the first time that we see his knife hands. And
- 50:44I really like this scene. I really really loved it. The only thing
- 50:52about it that I felt was kind of weird was the dude who's playing our
- 50:58sheep guy has what almost looks like a smile on his face, even though
- 51:02he is supposed to be feeling threatened and afraid. I wasn't really getting threatened
- 51:12and afraid from his body language and his face. I just felt like his
- 51:16expression was off, and I wasn't sure if that wasn't meant to be because
- 51:22of the fact that he's like supposed to be sort of sheep like. But
- 51:27I like felt as if he probably could have been played by somebody else and
- 51:32it would have been a little bit better. I don't know, that might
- 51:36just be me, but anyway, this is when Kuro comes up from behind
- 51:40him with his fucking, you know, Freddy Krueger fingers, and we see
- 51:47them like splay out behind this dude in a real spooky fashion before they come
- 51:54through his back and he gets impaled through the scent. Now in the show,
- 52:00or I keep saying the show, this is a show. In the
- 52:04anime, this guy is still alive. Later on, I had definitely thought
- 52:09he was murdered in this. It looks like he's actually dead, but he
- 52:15may not be. We shall see. So then we have Lufy and Zoro
- 52:22running into each other in the hallways of the house. The place is apparently
- 52:28really difficult to find your way around. Lufy, of course is trying to
- 52:30find something to eat, so he's going to the kitchen. Zorro is trying
- 52:35to find something to drink, and Nami is out here just raiding the place.
- 52:39And she's got a pillowcase that she's filling steadily with all kinds of stuff,
- 52:45and it is she hears like footsteps coming toward her and ducks into a
- 52:52room without really checking adequately, and it turns out this is Kaya's room,
- 52:59and that's how she winds up in this conversation with Kaya about her parents and
- 53:04her history and everything. I love. When Kaya says, have you ever
- 53:07lost somebody close to you? And Namy says no, even though we know
- 53:12she has, But even with somebody who would have no way of telling whether
- 53:16she's like telling the truth or not, or be able to use that against
- 53:20her. Nammy is just so unwilling to be vulnerable even now. It's just
- 53:29a reflex, you know, which strikes me as very very true. So
- 53:37the two of them bond a little bit of love. When there's at some
- 53:43point she like asks Namy a question, and whatever Namy's response is, she
- 53:49says, I'm jealous. I think it might be. When Namy says,
- 53:52I haven't lost anyone close to me, and she says, I'm jealous,
- 53:54and Namy says, says the rich girl in a real snide sort of way,
- 54:00and Kiya is like, you really aren't good at this friend's thing,
- 54:07are you? And there's like a pause and then Nammy starts laughing and it's
- 54:09like, I guess I'm not. And I really liked that bit. I
- 54:15just felt like the connection felt genuine. Nammy is sort of being a little
- 54:20chagrined, but she's not taking it back or anything. It's not like she's
- 54:24not feeling that embarrassed about it. It's just sort of a, h you
- 54:30got a point, you know. So Yeah, I really enjoyed the convo
- 54:35between the two of them, And in the end, Kaya is about to
- 54:40just let her walk away with all of the stuff that she was stealing.
- 54:45She said something about how like I've got too much shit already, and nam
- 54:49decides that it's a bit of a shabby thing to do to a girl that
- 54:52she has grown to like and doesn't take it. In the kitchen, meanwhile,
- 55:00is down here just playing with his sling shot while in the night away,
- 55:07and this is when Lufy finds out that Yeah, Sup is his dad,
- 55:13and he is so excited he's part of Shank's crew. Wait, you
- 55:21know my dad? Yeah, yeah, I do. He's the best,
- 55:24always made time for some pirate wisdom. So you guys like hung out,
- 55:30Yeah, that's cool, And it's obvious he's distressed. Lufy doesn't seem to
- 55:42see that. Zoro chimes in, if you're gonna talk about feelings, I'm
- 55:45really gonna need that drink, and then Usat mentions the wine cellar. Of
- 55:52course, when they go down there, they find sheep Man's body and begin
- 55:57to realize that some shit has gone quite quite wrong. And we then have
- 56:06the like Kuro comes in, well, well, well it appears we have
- 56:14some rats in our cellar. Now. He lets us up run off and
- 56:21rightfully says, nobody is going to believe a thing that he says, so
- 56:25let him say what he needs to say. I don't think Louvie went to
- 56:30the basement with them. I'm pretty sure he didn't, so he isn't part
- 56:34of this yet. But we get a pretty funny moment where Zoro is about
- 56:39to fight Kuro and he just gets bashed on the back of the head and
- 56:47goes down like a sack of flower. It's really honestly hilarious because he's posturing
- 56:57so bad with these two swords, looking tough a hell like genuine, and
- 57:01then the way he just fucking hits the floor. Oh rough. So yeah,
- 57:07this is when USAP runs off these fucking two, uh dump the bodies
- 57:15plus his swords down a well, of course, assuming that these two are
- 57:21totally dead. We'll see about that. And Kuro himself is just trying to
- 57:28like keep things fucking quiet for right now, so I'm trying to jump ahead
- 57:36a little bit here. So yeah, this is when USAP is running through
- 57:38the town yelling to everybody that they're pirates and nobody is believing him. It's
- 57:45also the middle of the night, which is interesting because I don't know how
- 57:46many times he's done this at night, but he, like, I would
- 57:52really think that if he has only ever done this during the day, if
- 57:55he starts doing it at night, that might get my attention slightly more.
- 58:00But it doesn't matter because in the end he literally says, there really are
- 58:07pirates. Why won't anyone believe me? And I was like, why will
- 58:13anyway? Sir? You know very well, why what do you mean?
- 58:19Come on? Like all you have ever done is this over and over and
- 58:23over again. And he's sort of reminiscing here as we go into a flashback
- 58:30of him very very young at his mother's bedside and you know, him telling
- 58:37her that his father's coming back soon and then once he gets here, you'll
- 58:42be well again. And he like she says, of course, of course
- 58:46that's true, and dies like on the spot in a way that I was
- 58:52almost found kind of comical, like it's not and she plays the scene well,
- 58:57but it was really a moment of like wow, that's wow. Right
- 59:01then, okay, And as he's saying like, why wi't anybody believe me,
- 59:07he looks up and sees Cody, who is or Kobe who is saying
- 59:12I believe you, And that's how the episode ends. Oh right. Florian
- 59:16says, Lufy stayed in the kitchen and ate the soup. I forgot about
- 59:20that because, like I think, I remember that he eats the soup in
- 59:24the anime as well, and obviously like that shit did not poison him,
- 59:30so I can't recall why not if it's the fact that he's got the rubber
- 59:32powers that makes it so it doesn't affect him. The same way or what
- 59:37you know. But uh, yeah, that's right. Thank you for that
- 59:40reminder, because he picks the soup up and I had a moment of like,
- 59:44oh no, and then I thought, wait, I think I remember
- 59:46this, so yeah, so yeah, that's the end of the episode.
- 59:51I really this is so much fun, you guys. I'm enjoying it so
- 59:53much. I'm really enjoying going through with the Owen. It's just a really
- 59:58fun thing to see someone who has only had a real tangential sort of like
- 1:00:07touchstones with this show watching this and having like some frame of reference but not
- 1:00:15knowing everything that's going to happen. And also like, I really am curious,
- 1:00:20you guys, how many people there are out there who watched this without
- 1:00:23ever having seen the anime and not having any idea what the anime is like.
- 1:00:30Because I keep being brought up short as I realize how weird some of
- 1:00:37this might seem if you don't know what this world is like so far.
- 1:00:42You know, we've got these like weirdo fishmen that are out here yelling at
- 1:00:47Buggy the Clown, and they're talking about like, oh you humans, And
- 1:00:52it's very clear ar Lung does not consider himself to be human. But then
- 1:00:59we have this fire sheep man who I believe would consider himself human, except
- 1:01:06that he isn't. Like come on, and there's no explanation given. Like
- 1:01:13the ways in which people's wild appearances in this world vary, there's very very
- 1:01:22little backstory on most of that. So I can't help but wonder, like
- 1:01:27people who don't know the aesthetics of the show going in, what do they
- 1:01:32think about these kinds of moments? Like truly very very curious about it.
- 1:01:42Anyway, Okay, so I have to wrap up. Thank you guys again
- 1:01:45so much. Appreciate you for hanging out, and thank you also to Gabby
- 1:01:50for commissioning this Until the next time. To lou motherfuckers, that was an unspoiled network
