- 0:14Randy Black: What can we learn from the things God chose not to tell us?
- 0:20Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black.
- 0:25Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. He's a troublemaker.
- 0:31Welcome back to Randy Unscripted. I'm Randy Black, and this is the podcast where
- 0:35I talk about whatever happens to just come across my brain whenever it happens to come across it.
- 0:41And this episode, it started when I couldn't sleep the other night because I
- 0:47had just listened to an episode of We Get to Do This,
- 0:51by Adam Curry and Pastor Jimmy Pruitt, and the title of that episode was Presence
- 0:55Over Pixels, and there's a link to it in the show notes for this episode.
- 0:59And during the conversation that they were having, Adam shared something that had happened.
- 1:05That someone at their church who listens to the podcast and works in the security
- 1:10team and some other stuff at the church handed him a note, a gentleman named James.
- 1:13And the note had a very simple question on it.
- 1:17It said, do you know what God left out of the Bible?
- 1:21And then underneath it was an answer, your opinion.
- 1:26I laughed. It was clever.
- 1:30But what really caught my attention wasn't just the punchline.
- 1:35It's what happened next.
- 1:37Pastor Jimmy then started talking about the weight of preaching God's word,
- 1:41of sharing God's word, and the responsibility of handling scripture with care, handling it carefully.
- 1:49He talked about resisting the temptation to preach your opinions instead of preaching God's truth.
- 1:56And that's an extremely important conversation.
- 1:59But after I listened to the episode and my mind kept racing and going in different
- 2:04directions with it, I kept thinking about the question itself.
- 2:10Not about my opinion, but about God's omissions.
- 2:15Because the more I thought about it, the more I realized something.
- 2:19God didn't accidentally leave things out of the Bible. He intentionally left
- 2:24things out. And that raises a really fascinating question.
- 2:28What can we learn from the things God chose not to tell us? And that's where
- 2:33I want to spend a little bit of time today.
- 2:37So let's start with a simple question. Is the Bible complete?
- 2:43Most Christians would answer, absolutely. And they're right.
- 2:47But maybe we need to find what we mean by that word complete.
- 2:54Do we mean that it contains every conversation that ever happened?
- 2:58Every miracle that Jesus performed? Every sermon that every apostle preached?
- 3:03And every detail about every biblical character?
- 3:07Of course not. In fact, one of the men that God used to write Scripture tells us exactly that.
- 3:16Listen to these words from John chapter 20, verses 30 and 31.
- 3:23And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples,
- 3:27which are not written in this book.
- 3:29But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ,
- 3:33the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name.
- 3:39John says something extremely remarkable there. There were many other signs.
- 3:46Many, not a few, not one or two, many.
- 3:53Think about that. John spent years walking with Jesus.
- 3:58He watched him teach. He watched him heal.
- 4:02He watched him perform these miracles. He watched lives change.
- 4:08And when it came time to write his gospel, he didn't write everything he knew. He couldn't have.
- 4:15But more importantly, he didn't need to. Notice what he says there.
- 4:20These are written. Why?
- 4:25That ye might believe. John wasn't trying to satisfy every curiosity.
- 4:31He's trying to point people to Christ.
- 4:34His purpose wasn't information.
- 4:38His purpose was transformation. And I wonder if sometimes we approach the Bible
- 4:44with the wrong expectation.
- 4:46We want it to answer every question.
- 4:49God intended it to answer the most important ones.
- 4:53You know, like, who's God? Who am I? Why is the world broken?
- 4:58Can I be forgiven? Who's Jesus? How can I be saved? How should I live?
- 5:03Those questions, the Bible answers with remarkable clarity.
- 5:09But then there's other questions. Questions we'd all love answers to.
- 5:13Questions that Christians have debated for centuries.
- 5:18And God simply doesn't tell us.
- 5:23Not because he couldn't, but because he chose not to.
- 5:28I think that's worth thinking about, because if we believe that scripture is
- 5:31inspired, then we also have to believe its silence is inspired.
- 5:36Not in the sense that silence is a new revelation, but in the sense that what
- 5:42God chose not to reveal is every bit as intentional as what he did reveal.
- 5:48God is not an accidental author. He's deliberate, purposeful, intentional.
- 5:54Nothing made it into Scripture by mistake, and nothing was left out by accident.
- 6:03Once you start looking for them, you realize the Bible is full of these unanswered questions.
- 6:09Some of them are small. Some of them are enormous. Take, for example,
- 6:14the woman caught in adultery in John chapter 8.
- 6:17The religious leaders drag her before Jesus. They demand an answer.
- 6:21Jesus kneels down and begins writing in the dirt.
- 6:26And then the Bible never tells us what he wrote.
- 6:31You ever wondered about that? I have. For 2,000 years, people have tried to figure it out.
- 6:38Some believers wrote that he writes down the names of the accusers.
- 6:43Some think that he wrote down their hidden sins.
- 6:47Others think he may have written down some scripture.
- 6:50The truth of it is, we don't know. We don't know because God never told us.
- 6:59Here's another one. What did Jesus actually look like?
- 7:05Think about that. The most influential person in human history,
- 7:09and the Bible never gives us a physical description.
- 7:14No height, no eye color, no hair color, nothing. God could have told us, but he didn't.
- 7:24Or what about Paul's thorn in the flesh? Paul mentions it.
- 7:27He prayed three times for God to remove it, and God said no.
- 7:31But Paul never actually tells us what it was.
- 7:36Was it poor eyesight? Was it a physical illness? Was it constant persecution?
- 7:40Was it a spiritual struggle?
- 7:43Those are all thoughtful arguments for all of the possibilities.
- 7:47But they're still just possibilities because Scripture doesn't tell us.
- 7:54Then there's Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. He's there at Jesus' birth.
- 8:00He's there when Jesus is 12 years old in the temple. And then he just disappears
- 8:04from the biblical record.
- 8:06There's no explanation. There's no obituary. There's no farewell. Just silence. Hmm.
- 8:14Let's think about this one. How many wise men visited Jesus?
- 8:19Every nativity scene at Christmas says there are three. Every Christmas pageant says three. The Bible?
- 8:27It never says. It mentions three gifts. Gold, frankincense, myrrh.
- 8:35But it never tells us how many men brought them. Maybe there were three.
- 8:41Maybe there were 12. we simply don't know.
- 8:45The same is true for the author of Hebrews, for the exact location of the Garden
- 8:50of Eden, the appearance of the Ark of the Covenant, the childhood of Jesus,
- 8:55the fate of so many biblical figures whose stories simply stop.
- 9:01And if anything like me, part of you wants answers because unanswered questions bother us.
- 9:07As humans, we like closure. We like details. We like certainty.
- 9:12But here's something I've been thinking about.
- 9:14Maybe the lesson isn't hidden in the answers. Maybe it's hidden in God's decision not to answer.
- 9:22Every one of those mysteries reminds us of something.
- 9:26God was under no obligation to satisfy my curiosity.
- 9:31He wasn't writing a Bible to answer every question that I'd have someday.
- 9:36He was revealing himself. And that is a very different purpose.
- 9:42When I was younger, I used to think that if I just studied long enough,
- 9:44I'd eventually have every answer.
- 9:47The older I get, the more comfortable I've become saying three simple words. I don't know.
- 9:56And maybe that's not a weakness.
- 10:00Maybe that's wisdom. Because every time I say, I don't know,
- 10:04I'm also saying something else.
- 10:06But God does. There's something freeing about that. It reminds me that faith
- 10:11isn't built on knowing everything.
- 10:13Faith is built on trusting the one who does.
- 10:21So why? Why would God leave so many questions unanswered?
- 10:25And I don't pretend to know every reason. Ironically, that'd be another opinion.
- 10:31But I do think Scripture gives us a principle.
- 10:34Listen to this from Deuteronomy 29, verse 29.
- 10:38The secret things belong unto the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed
- 10:43belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
- 10:50I love that verse because it draws a very clear line. There are secret things,
- 10:55and there are revealed things.
- 10:58God never apologizes for the existence of mystery. He simply reminds us that
- 11:03some things belong to him.
- 11:05Think about that for a moment.
- 11:08We live in a culture that believes every mystery should be solved.
- 11:12Every question deserves an answer. Every secret should eventually be uncovered.
- 11:18But that's not how God operates.
- 11:20Sometimes his answer is revelation.
- 11:23Sometimes his answer is silence. And both of those are acts of wisdom.
- 11:29The more I've thought about this,
- 11:30the more I've realized that maybe God's omissions are actually gifts.
- 11:34Take Jesus' appearance. If Scripture had given us an exact physical description,
- 11:39we would have spent centuries trying to recreate his face instead of following his teachings.
- 11:45If we knew exactly where the Ark of Covenant was today, would people be worshiping
- 11:49God or standing in line to worship the Ark?
- 11:54If Paul had identified his thorn in the flesh, would everyone whose suffering
- 11:59looked different conclude that God couldn't relate to them?
- 12:04Instead, God left it undefined. Every believer who struggled with weakness can
- 12:10see themselves in Paul's story.
- 12:13Sometimes God's silence makes his word more broadly applicable.
- 12:17It forces us to focus on the principle instead of getting distracted by the particulars.
- 12:25That's true all throughout Scripture. God often gives us what we need without
- 12:30satisfying every curiosity that we have.
- 12:33And that's where another passage comes in.
- 12:36Paul writes this in 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 and 17.
- 12:41All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine,
- 12:46for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
- 12:50that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
- 12:56Notice what Paul doesn't say.
- 12:59He doesn't say scripture answers every question. He says scripture thoroughly
- 13:03equips us. There's a huge difference.
- 13:07The Bible isn't incomplete because it doesn't answer every curiosity.
- 13:12It's complete because it contains everything God intended to give us for knowing
- 13:16him, following him, and living faithfully.
- 13:20Maybe we've been measuring the Bible by the wrong standard. Instead of asking,
- 13:25does it answer every question I have?
- 13:27Maybe we should ask, has God given me everything I need to know Him?
- 13:32And the answer to that question is unmistakably yes.
- 13:36The Bible doesn't leave us lacking. It leaves us trusting.
- 13:41There's a difference there. God isn't withholding what's necessary.
- 13:45He's withholding what isn't. And learning to trust that distinction may be one
- 13:50of the marks of a mature faith.
- 13:54So, what happens when God doesn't answer a question?
- 13:59Well, usually we do.
- 14:03Have you ever noticed that? Where the Bible leaves a blank space,
- 14:08we're often eager to fill it.
- 14:11Sometimes with tradition, sometimes with assumptions, sometimes with sincere
- 14:16study, and sometimes with our opinions.
- 14:20Now, before I go any further, let me be clear. There's nothing wrong with studying.
- 14:24There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions. There's nothing wrong
- 14:28with trying to understand difficult passages of Scripture.
- 14:31In fact, we're commanded to study God's Word. The problem isn't careful study.
- 14:36The problem is confusing our conclusions with God's revelation.
- 14:42There's a difference. One of the healthiest phrases Christians can learn is this, I don't know.
- 14:51Those three words aren't a sign of weak faith. Sometimes they're a sign of mature
- 14:56faith, because saying I don't know also means I'm not going to claim God said something he didn't.
- 15:02That is an act of reverence. And I've noticed something over the years.
- 15:07The older I get, the less impressed I am by people who have an immediate answer
- 15:11for every theological question.
- 15:14And the more I appreciate people who are willing to open their Bible,
- 15:17to read the text carefully and admit where mysteries remain.
- 15:22That's not compromise. That's humility. I think one of the dangers facing the
- 15:27church today isn't that we have too few opinions.
- 15:33It's that we sometimes speak with absolute certainty where scripture speaks
- 15:38with intentional silence.
- 15:41Man, that's dangerous because eventually people stop hearing the difference
- 15:45between thus saith the Lord and here's what I think.
- 15:50Those are not the same thing. As Christians, we should have deep convictions. Absolutely.
- 15:58But our strongest convictions should also rest on the clearest teachings of Scripture.
- 16:04The further we move from what God explicitly said, the more humble we should become.
- 16:11Maybe that's one of the reasons that James' note he handed Adam struck such a nerve with me.
- 16:16Do you know what God left out of the Bible? Your opinion.
- 16:21Again, at first it made me laugh. Now it makes me pause because every time I
- 16:27open God's Word, I have a choice.
- 16:30Am I going to let Scripture shape my thinking or am I going to spend my time
- 16:35trying to shape Scripture around mine?
- 16:39One approach produces pride. The other produces worship.
- 16:45And I know which one of those that I want. I don't want to become someone who's
- 16:50famous for having answers, because I don't.
- 16:54I'd rather become someone who's faithful to the answers God has already given.
- 16:59Because at the end of the day, my opinions don't transform lives. God's Word does.
- 17:08As we wrap this up today, I want to go back to where we started.
- 17:12A simple question on a handwritten note.
- 17:15Do you know what God left out of the Bible? Your opinion.
- 17:20It's a clever line. It made me laugh when I heard it, but after spending time
- 17:24thinking about it this week, I don't think the biggest lesson is about my opinion.
- 17:29I think it's about God's purpose. Every page of scripture reminds us that God is intentional.
- 17:35Nothing was included by accident. nothing was omitted by mistake.
- 17:40He gave us exactly what we need to know all about Him and to know Him.
- 17:47Exactly what we need to understand for ourselves.
- 17:51Exactly what we need to know about our Savior. And exactly what we need to live
- 17:57faithfully until He returns.
- 18:01Would I still like to know what Jesus wrote in the dirt? Absolutely.
- 18:05Would I love to know what Paul's thorn in the flesh really was? Of course.
- 18:11Do I wish I knew more about Jesus' childhood? Man, without question.
- 18:18But none of those unanswered questions have ever kept me from knowing Christ.
- 18:24They've never kept me from understanding the gospel. They've never kept me from following him.
- 18:29And maybe, just maybe, that's the point.
- 18:33Sometimes we become so fascinated by what God chose not to say that we overlook
- 18:39what he has already said.
- 18:41Maybe instead of asking, what did God leave out? We should spend more time asking,
- 18:47what am I doing with what he put in?
- 18:50Because the greatest challenge facing most Christians isn't a lack of information.
- 18:56It's a lack of obedience. Jesus did not say, if you know these things, you'll be curious.
- 19:03What he did say in John chapter 13, verse 17 was this, if you know these things,
- 19:09happy are ye if ye do them.
- 19:12Man, knowledge matters.
- 19:15Study matters. Questions matter.
- 19:18But eventually, every Bible study has to become a life that's lived.
- 19:24So here's my challenge for you this week. Keep asking good questions.
- 19:30Dig into God's Word. Study faithfully. Read carefully. Learn from mature believers.
- 19:37Search through the Scriptures.
- 19:39But when you come to a place where God simply has chosen not to speak,
- 19:44don't feel obligated to speak for Him.
- 19:47Be comfortable saying those three little words, I don't know.
- 19:52That's not weakness. That's humility. And humility has always been the right
- 19:57posture before a holy God.
- 20:00Then, take that same energy, that same passion, that same curiosity,
- 20:05and pour it into the things God has made unmistakably clear.
- 20:10Love the Lord your God. Love your neighbor. Forgive those who've wronged you.
- 20:14Walk humbly. Share the gospel. Remain faithful.
- 20:17Those aren't mysteries. Those are marching orders.
- 20:21If we spend as much time obeying what God has clearly revealed,
- 20:25as we do with debating what he intentionally left unrevealed,
- 20:30I think we'd look a lot more like Christ.
- 20:33And maybe, maybe that's the biggest lesson that I've taken away from all of this.
- 20:38The Bible isn't a rough draft waiting for us to finish it. It's a finished work,
- 20:43that invites us to trust its author.
- 20:47Let me leave you with the words of the prophet Isaiah.
- 20:51For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
- 20:57For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your
- 21:02ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
- 21:05That's from Isaiah 55 verses 8 and 9.
- 21:09Sometimes the greatest expression of faith isn't claiming to know everything.
- 21:13It's simply trusting the one who does.
