- 0:00Hey you guys, this is friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Happy Wednesday.
- 0:06We have made it to midweek. I pray that y'all are doing well
- 0:11and just wherever life finds you that you can experience more of
- 0:15the heart of God each day. Today we are going to be
- 0:19continuing through Second John. This quiet time really
- 0:23challenged me because it exposed how easy it is to slowly drift
- 0:29away from fully depending on Jesus.
- 0:32And it can be without even realizing it.
- 0:35We're going to talk all things striving, self-reliance, how to
- 0:39remain rooted in the truth, and why it is so important to
- 0:44consistently remind ourselves of the gospel message on the daily.
- 0:49So let's go ahead and read second John verse 8.
- 0:54It says be on your guard so that you do not lose all that you
- 0:59have diligently worked for, but receive a full reward.
- 1:04OK, when I first read this verse, I immediately was brought
- 1:09back to something that Paul says in first Corinthians 15 about
- 1:14believing in vain. And this message that he is
- 1:18preaching is not because salvation is earned by works,
- 1:23but because it is possible to slowly drift away from the
- 1:26simplicity of the true gospel. I think that this happens a lot
- 1:33more often and more subtly than we realize.
- 1:36Because you can begin fully dependent on Jesus.
- 1:41You know that you are saved by grace.
- 1:43You know that you could never earn salvation.
- 1:46But over time, the focus can slowly shift.
- 1:51You may start feeling like God loves you more when you perform
- 1:55better, or everything depends on your effort.
- 1:59You have to sustain yourself spiritually.
- 2:02And then Christianity starts to become exhausting.
- 2:07That's not because Jesus is heavy, but because you started
- 2:11carrying things that you were never asked to carry on your
- 2:15own. Galatians 3 verse 3 says your
- 2:19new life began by the Spirit. Why then, would you so foolishly
- 2:24turn from living in the Spirit by trying to finish by your own
- 2:29works? So that ties into John's warning
- 2:34here. And second, John, it is not just
- 2:37about abandoning Christianity entirely, it's about guarding
- 2:41yourself from drifting away from the true gospel, the message of
- 2:46Jesus Christ. Drift is not always happen
- 2:51through rebellion. Sometimes it is through
- 2:54self-reliance. And I think this world
- 2:58consistently pushes that message that it is all about you.
- 3:03It is on your own strength, it's about your work, your success.
- 3:08But the Gospel points us away from ourselves and turns us to
- 3:13Jesus, to his finished work on the cross.
- 3:17False teaching at the time that John was riding.
- 3:21Second, John was focused on self instead of Christ because these
- 3:26false teachers were trying to choose what they wanted to
- 3:29believe and what they wanted to teach about Jesus.
- 3:33But it is the same for today. A lot of people create a version
- 3:38of Christianity that focuses more on pride and control rather
- 3:43than dependence on God. But y'all self was never meant
- 3:49to be our savior. Proverbs 16 verse 18 says pride
- 3:54goes before destruction. And sometimes pride does not
- 3:59look loud or arrogant in the moment.
- 4:02Sometimes it looks like believing in yourself more than
- 4:07believing in God or thinking that everything depends on you.
- 4:12And I think that's why so many people can burn out spiritually,
- 4:17because they're trying to produce through striving what
- 4:21only comes through abiding in Jesus, as we see in John 15.
- 4:27That's humbling to think that we are nothing without Jesus, but
- 4:32it is also so free. The gospel was never Jesus got
- 4:37you started, so now you get to keep yourself saved.
- 4:41No Jesus saves you, he sustains you and he finishes what he
- 4:46started. Philippians one verse 6 says,
- 4:51being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you
- 4:55will carry it on into completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
- 5:01So God is not done with you. He is constantly working on your
- 5:05heart, drawing you closer to Him, and He will finish what He
- 5:10started in you. So I think this is such a great
- 5:14reminder that we must keep preaching the gospel to
- 5:18ourselves every single day. It is not just when we first get
- 5:22saved, but daily because our hearts drift so easily into
- 5:28striving and into performance. Ephesians 2 verse 8 to 9 I think
- 5:35is a verse that we hear a lot, but I did want to read it in a
- 5:39different translation because it really just helped purify my
- 5:43mind and was such a great reminder for me.
- 5:47It says for it was only through this wonderful grace that we
- 5:51believed in Him. Nothing we did could ever earn
- 5:55this salvation. Salvation is never a reward for
- 5:59good works or human striving. You did not earn God's grace in
- 6:05the beginning, therefore you will not sustain yourself by
- 6:09human effort now. The Christian life begins and
- 6:15ends with Jesus. It continues through dependence
- 6:19on Him. So I think an important question
- 6:23to ask ourselves right now is, have I slowly made my
- 6:28relationship with God more about my performance than on His
- 6:32grace? When you fail because you will,
- 6:39do you run toward God or is it away from Him?
- 6:45Striving hides from God, But grace, when you have that full
- 6:49revelation of His grace, it propels you into His arms.
- 6:54You run back to Him. Maybe some of you today are just
- 6:59spiritually drained because you've been trying to carry
- 7:02something that Jesus can only carry that he was meant to
- 7:06carry. Maybe it's trying harder, fixing
- 7:10yourself, performing for approval.
- 7:14But meanwhile Jesus is whispering, abide in me, remain
- 7:19in me, continue in me. Another thing that I loved while
- 7:26studying this verse is that everything has always been about
- 7:31Jesus, not us. Romans 11 verse 36 says for out
- 7:36of Him, the source and sustainer of everything, everything finds
- 7:42fulfillment in Him. Your life literally exists to
- 7:49point back to Christ, and when John talks here about receiving
- 7:55a full reward, I don't believe that he's talking about earning
- 7:59salvation because salvation is by grace alone.
- 8:05But scripture does speak about eternal rewards that are
- 8:09connected to faithfulness and perseverance in this life.
- 8:13Galatians 6 verse 9 tells us to not grow weary and doing good
- 8:18because in the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not
- 8:22give up. So some of you may need that
- 8:26reminder today. Do not grow weary.
- 8:30Faithfulness usually does not look flashy.
- 8:34It is a daily surrender, a daily obedience, daily returning to
- 8:40the gospel again and again. So today, if some of you are
- 8:47feeling spiritually exhausted, trapped in striving, I just want
- 8:52to say I get it. It's so easy to fall back into
- 8:56that habit, into a mindset of striving.
- 9:00But maybe the invite for you is just to enter into God's grace
- 9:06fully and to allow it to cascade over you, and to remember that
- 9:12you were not made to do this on your own.
- 9:15Return to abiding. Return to utter dependence on
- 9:19Jesus. You did not save yourself, so
- 9:24you do not have to sustain yourself either.
- 9:27Jesus Christ is the author, the pioneer, the perfector of your
- 9:32faith. So let's go ahead and pray
- 9:35together. Dear Jesus, thank you for your
- 9:43grace that is free flowing. That is nothing that we could
- 9:49earn, nothing that we could deserve.
- 9:54Thank you for your finished work on the cross, for your
- 9:57endurance, for every single detail that you went to great
- 10:03lengths to accomplish so that we could live in freedom right now.
- 10:10Thank you that your salvation was never based on our
- 10:14performance or our work. I pray that we would remain
- 10:19rooted in truth. Would you guard us from drifting
- 10:23into striving or relying on our self?
- 10:28May we flee from selfish ambition.
- 10:30God empower us to do so. It is so easy to go back to what
- 10:36is familiar, to what we can try to control, but I pray that we
- 10:41would abide in You daily, that we would continually remind
- 10:45ourselves of the gospel. May we never be ashamed of the
- 10:49full gospel of Jesus Christ. Would you help us to stay
- 10:53faithful and to depend on Your Spirit more and more?
- 11:00Increase our faith, God. May we walk by faith, not by
- 11:04sight, led by your spirit. In step with your spirit, we
- 11:10pray these things in your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
- 11:15OK y'all, that is today's podcast episode.
- 11:18Hope you'll have a great rest of your Wednesday or whenever
- 11:21you're listening to this, that this blesses you.
- 11:24And I am just so excited to continue studying the word of
- 11:28God together. And I will see y'all on the next
- 11:31podcast episode.
