- 0:20Speaker 2: What's up? Everybody.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Welcome into Jfkble Reviews, a division of the Lone Gum
- 0:25Speaker 1: And podcast. I am your host, Big bad Bob. I'm
- 0:32Speaker 1: getting better at this pointing thing. And tonight we will
- 0:36Speaker 1: be reviewing the book Pieces of the Puzzle and Anthology
- 0:40Speaker 1: by Gail Nick Jackson, with contributions from Doug Campbell, Steve Rowe,
- 0:45Speaker 1: Chris Scally, and James Wagenford. And yes, folks, I do
- 0:52Speaker 1: have the book. I do, and it is hard hardcover,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and she's stick and she's signed by Gail and Doug,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and it would be signed by James wagon Ford as
- 1:20Speaker 1: well if I had my book with me, but actually
- 1:22Speaker 1: had him sign something else for me. And I've been
- 1:26Speaker 1: putting off doing this book for a long time because
- 1:32Speaker 1: several of the people who have written things for this
- 1:34Speaker 1: book are my friends.
- 1:38Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Of course, Doug, it's quite obvious, you know, he's been
- 1:41Speaker 1: my friend for a very long time, over twelve years.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Gail has been a dear friend for over ten years.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Steve row has been on the show. Yes he's a
- 1:52Speaker 1: lone nutter, but he's a good dude. He's one of
- 1:53Speaker 1: my friends. And of course I met James wagon Ford
- 1:58Speaker 1: and had dinner with him, had very awesome conversations with him.
- 2:03Speaker 1: You know, a great guy, very nice, very funny, witty,
- 2:08Speaker 1: down to earth, just just a great dude. And the
- 2:11Speaker 1: one I'm not familiar with very much is Chris Scally.
- 2:15Speaker 1: But you know, to have four of my friends write
- 2:19Speaker 1: a book, you know, I didn't want to come across
- 2:22Speaker 1: reviewing it as being biased, And honestly, I'm gonna try
- 2:28Speaker 1: not to be in this review because I'm gonna give
- 2:34Speaker 1: it to you straight. You know, yes, these are my friends,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but if they wrote a piece of crap, I'll let
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know, okay, And I still love him, it's just
- 2:44Speaker 1: the same, and hopefully they'll still love me.
- 2:47Speaker 2: But I don't think that's gonna be the case.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Now, what's great about this book starting off the bat
- 2:52Speaker 1: is the title, Okay, pieces of the Puzzle. How many
- 2:59Speaker 1: times do you hear me say that on the podcast?
- 3:03Speaker 1: A thousand times?
- 3:07Speaker 2: You know, we may not have.
- 3:11Speaker 1: The entire picture of the Kennedy assassination, but we do
- 3:16Speaker 1: have little pieces here, little pieces there, literally and figuratively,
- 3:22Speaker 1: pieces of the puzzle. And it's an anthology, and I
- 3:32Speaker 1: believe in ancient Greek or Roman and anthology means to
- 3:35Speaker 1: give someone to give flowers, and it's appropriate, and.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I think.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Everybody writing this book and doing their fair sharing parts
- 3:53Speaker 1: certainly gave the man on the cover of this book
- 3:57Speaker 1: their flowers, and hopefully tonight I'll be able to give Gail, Doug, Steve,
- 4:03Speaker 1: Chris and James their flowers as well, because I thoroughly
- 4:09Speaker 1: enjoy books on the Kennedy assassination that are outside of
- 4:16Speaker 1: the norm. And what I mean by that is outside
- 4:22Speaker 1: of the normal. You know, here's the assassination, and you
- 4:26Speaker 1: know one crazy thing at the end, you know, to
- 4:30Speaker 1: maybe make you want to buy the book. This is
- 4:33Speaker 1: not a rehashing of the Kennedy assassination. No, no, if
- 4:38Speaker 1: that's what you're looking for, this is not the book
- 4:40Speaker 1: for you. What this anthology does do, however, is inspect
- 4:47Speaker 1: lesser known parts of the story that are very interesting,
- 4:53Speaker 1: very interesting, and up until the time this book came out,
- 4:58Speaker 1: had largely been over looked by most of the JFK
- 5:04Speaker 1: research community. And we'll get into some examples here in
- 5:08Speaker 1: a minute, but before we do again, pieces of the
- 5:14Speaker 1: Puzzle four hundred and twenty eight pages, nine chapters, most
- 5:20Speaker 1: written by Gail. I mean as this is her book,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and again contributions of chapters from Doug Campbell, Steve Rowe,
- 5:30Speaker 1: Chris Scally, and James Waganvoord vaganvod And if you're looking
- 5:36Speaker 1: for this book, I believe it was self published by
- 5:40Speaker 1: and printed by Johnson Printing in twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I know on Amazon right now if you want a
- 5:52Speaker 1: hardcover like I've got, especially a signed one. I mean
- 5:59Speaker 1: the one on here's got to be signed, because it's
- 6:02Speaker 1: freaking two hundred and thirty seven dollars and fifty cents.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, they also have a paperback version on here.
- 6:16Speaker 1: For twenty six ninety nine, which would probably be you know,
- 6:23Speaker 1: your better better route, you know, unless you like dropping
- 6:27Speaker 1: a ton of money on collectible books. So this book
- 6:35Speaker 1: I'm holding in my hand right now is probably worth
- 6:38Speaker 1: a couple hundred bucks.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And I cherish it and it's awesome and I love it,
- 6:44Speaker 2: and I'll never sell it.
- 6:46Speaker 1: You can pry it off my dead cold bookshelf after
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm dead. I'm sure my kids will enjoy selling it,
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know. I'm glad I can leave them a fortune
- 6:57Speaker 1: in Kennedy books. But I digress. But let's get into
- 7:03Speaker 1: the book.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Man. I love this book so much.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And the reason I wanted to bring it up, and
- 7:17Speaker 1: that was actually Joe's idea, but Joe did not feel
- 7:24Speaker 1: compelled to be here to actually do the book review,
- 7:27Speaker 1: so it's just me. I think the book starts off
- 7:36Speaker 1: with James Wagenford's contributing chapter and his perspective of the
- 7:44Speaker 1: Kennedy assassination from being alive at the time and working
- 7:48Speaker 1: at Life magazine. He's got a very unique perspective on
- 7:52Speaker 1: things and a very unique story and was able to
- 7:54Speaker 1: meet a lot of the characters involved, you know, in
- 7:59Speaker 1: this book, as well as Gail's grandfather Orville. In chapter two,
- 8:08Speaker 1: Steve Rowe writes extensively about the welcome mister Kennedy to.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Dallas UH deal with h.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Bernard Weissman UH Larry Schmidt. Gail follows that up with
- 8:32Speaker 1: in general Walker Robert Surrey. She writes about the Cuban
- 8:39Speaker 1: element in Dallas, and so that extensively five chapters right
- 8:44Speaker 1: there focuses on the far right of Dallas, a subject
- 8:48Speaker 1: had been largely overlooked in UH books about the Kennedy
- 8:54Speaker 1: assassination up until, you know, the time this had came out.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I mean there had been something that mentioned it.
- 8:59Speaker 2: But but you know, these five chapters.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I think are very important to the story and I
- 9:09Speaker 1: highly recommend you reading them now. The reason this book
- 9:16Speaker 1: is relevant to our discussion on the last show and
- 9:20Speaker 1: also will be Wednesday night for members only, it is
- 9:28Speaker 1: chapter seven Finding McCann. What Gail was able to do
- 9:36Speaker 1: was tracked down father McCann, the old sex panther, and
- 9:46Speaker 1: extensively interview him at his home in Texas, and she
- 9:53Speaker 1: was able to develop a friendship with him through common interest,
- 9:58Speaker 1: common grounds, And she's very transparent in relating the interview
- 10:05Speaker 1: with father Marcaan. It wasn't just one interview, it was
- 10:07Speaker 1: multiple interviews in person, on the phone, and she was
- 10:13Speaker 1: able to strike up a very unique friendship with the
- 10:15Speaker 1: guy by being respectful and listening and you know, being interested.
- 10:25Speaker 2: You know, I think he had.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Only been tracked down maybe one time in nineteen eighty
- 10:31Speaker 1: by Frontline, and then they didn't even use anything from
- 10:34Speaker 1: talking to him. So at the time she interviewed him,
- 10:39Speaker 1: I think he was in his eighties eighty two maybe, so,
- 10:43Speaker 1: you know, elderly man at this point, but apparently still
- 10:47Speaker 1: in good enough shape to travel internationally. I believe his
- 10:51Speaker 1: son was living in Thailand. He eventually had a son,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and I believe did a couple of tours in i
- 11:03Speaker 1: Iraq and then move back to Thailand. I believe his
- 11:05Speaker 1: mother was from the area. But I believe his mother
- 11:12Speaker 1: uh passed away from d the Dingay fever in like
- 11:15Speaker 1: six within s like six days of getting it.
- 11:18Speaker 2: So it's a very tragic story.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And uh, but the interviews with father McCann are very revealing.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And of course time time is always a thief of
- 11:33Speaker 1: of of of details and incidents and things like that.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And Gail really had to pride this guy at times
- 11:40Speaker 1: to remember certain details and other times she didn't. Sometimes
- 11:45Speaker 1: he would say he didn't remember something about a subject
- 11:47Speaker 1: and then at a different time seemingly recall all kinds
- 11:51Speaker 1: of things about it. He would contradict himself at times
- 11:54Speaker 1: as well. He was really reluctant to talk about Mary
- 11:58Speaker 1: Anne Sullivan and at times Sylvi Odio.
- 12:04Speaker 2: But you know, I think that this.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Interview with father McCann, it's still it's it's very interesting.
- 12:16Speaker 1: It's worth the price of this book alone, you know,
- 12:21Speaker 1: I mean, it's crazy. And then of course we have
- 12:26Speaker 1: The gun Runner by Doug Campbell, and he tells the
- 12:30Speaker 1: story of the Johnson thirty six and the story of
- 12:33Speaker 1: Jerry Hemming and Lauren Hall and the Johnson thirty odd
- 12:40Speaker 1: six rifle of course making its way to Dallas, and
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know, the story of Roy Payne and why his
- 12:49Speaker 1: fingerprints were found on it and all of that. It
- 12:52Speaker 1: goes through the story of it all, and it's an
- 12:58Speaker 1: important story and it's one that I didn't know before
- 13:03Speaker 1: Doug wrote about it, and it was really an eye
- 13:06Speaker 1: opening thing, truly. And then chapter nine concludes with closing
- 13:16Speaker 1: in on the Knicks film by Chris Kelly, where it
- 13:22Speaker 1: kind of updates the readers on the status of finding
- 13:26Speaker 1: the original the camera original Knicks film, which of course
- 13:32Speaker 1: Gail had written extensively about in her book The Missing
- 13:37Speaker 1: jfk Assassination Film, The Mystery Surrounding the Orvile Nicks Home
- 13:44Speaker 1: Movie of November twenty second, sixty three, which was published
- 13:50Speaker 1: let's see in early twenty sixteen, so it came out
- 13:58Speaker 1: shortly before this one.
- 14:04Speaker 2: So very cool.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Now when it comes to this book, of course, I
- 14:17Speaker 1: pulled it out and I reread the interview with father McCann.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Due to the subject matter of this week's show, and
- 14:27Speaker 1: you can kind of compare it to what we think
- 14:33Speaker 1: we know or or kind of can glean from the
- 14:37Speaker 1: documents about Sylvia Odio and Father McCann and the Cuban
- 14:45Speaker 1: community there in Dallas at the time. And I think
- 14:51Speaker 1: Father McCann is a very interesting character who kept some
- 14:54Speaker 1: things very close to his vest. He didn't really go
- 14:59Speaker 1: into detail about out why he decided to stop being
- 15:05Speaker 1: in the priesthood other than the fact that he never
- 15:07Speaker 1: wanted to be a priest. His mother pushed him into
- 15:11Speaker 1: that profession because he was the oldest son, you know,
- 15:17Speaker 1: and he was a mama's boy, and he did what
- 15:21Speaker 1: she wanted for a while until he just couldn't do
- 15:26Speaker 1: it anymore. His heart wasn't in it. So you know,
- 15:31Speaker 1: it's it's it's a very very enlightening book if you
- 15:35Speaker 1: really want to know the story of Father mcann as
- 15:38Speaker 1: much as we can know the story of Father mcannn
- 15:42Speaker 1: and whether or not he was being totally honest with
- 15:44Speaker 1: Gail or not, I don't know. Just from his answers
- 15:52Speaker 1: on some things, I would say that he's still holding
- 15:55Speaker 1: back some information and we may never know and probably
- 16:01Speaker 1: still not alive. I mean again, this was ten years ago.
- 16:06Speaker 1: He'd be ninety two. It's possible, but not likely. And
- 16:12Speaker 1: I don't know whether he.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Is or not.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I don't know, but so yeah, Pieces of the Puzzle
- 16:21Speaker 1: and anthology highly recommend this book. I can't tell you
- 16:27Speaker 1: enough for what it is, which is a very intriguing
- 16:34Speaker 1: book that mixes it up from a couple different authors.
- 16:37Speaker 1: It does it differently than the rest, and the subject
- 16:41Speaker 1: matter is not your typical same old, same old. So
- 16:46Speaker 1: if you want a book about the assassination that you
- 16:50Speaker 1: likely have never heard of or never known before, this
- 16:54Speaker 1: is the book for you. And again for Gail being
- 17:01Speaker 1: a very hard working lady. She's a former English professor
- 17:05Speaker 1: with the Masters and rhetoric from Texas Women's University. Now
- 17:09Speaker 1: it does sing on the back here, Gail, if you
- 17:11Speaker 1: ever watched this that this is the second in a
- 17:14Speaker 1: series of five books regarding the JFK assassination. Where are
- 17:19Speaker 1: the other three?
- 17:20Speaker 2: Damn it? I know of two.
- 17:25Speaker 1: If you got three more in you, we'd love to
- 17:27Speaker 1: see them. And Gail's a lovely lady. We had her
- 17:30Speaker 1: here on the show about a year or so. Agoes well,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and she's going through her own fight legal battles with
- 17:38Speaker 1: the government trying to get back her grandfather's camera original
- 17:43Speaker 1: Knicks film, and she can't really say a lot about
- 17:48Speaker 1: a lot. But I'm also privy to a message recently
- 17:56Speaker 1: from her two Doug and I about some things. She
- 18:01Speaker 1: had some very nice things to say about us in there,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and what we can expect once we do have some
- 18:08Speaker 1: kind of conclusion to the story that's been dragged out
- 18:14Speaker 1: for years and years and years in the courts.
- 18:17Speaker 2: But the book, folks, for.
- 18:24Speaker 1: What it is and what it was, it stands up
- 18:26Speaker 1: to test her time. It's unique, and it's subject matter.
- 18:33Speaker 1: It's very well researched and very well written. And what
- 18:38Speaker 1: more can you ask for in a book?
- 18:42Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:45Speaker 1: So with that being said, and I know I'm gonna
- 18:49Speaker 1: get roasted, ten get it ten guns up from your Boy,
- 19:00Speaker 1: Pop Up, Up, Up, Up, Up Up, ten Guns Up.
- 19:07Speaker 1: It's an excellent book. I'm thrilled to have it on
- 19:11Speaker 1: my bookshelf. I use it as a resource. Yes these
- 19:17Speaker 1: are my friends. Yes I'm a little biased, but honestly
- 19:24Speaker 1: it earned it's ten out of ten. The only criticism
- 19:28Speaker 1: I have of it is that it's not longer than
- 19:32Speaker 1: what it is that's my only criticism and I can't
- 19:38Speaker 1: take away from the score for that. So that being said,
- 19:43Speaker 1: I highly recommend this book. Go get your copy link
- 19:47Speaker 1: in the description. If you want to be a big
- 19:50Speaker 1: spender and get the hardcover go ahead. If not, get
- 19:53Speaker 1: the paperback version.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I get it. Times are tough. Times are tough.
