- 0:00SPEAKER_04: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:04SPEAKER_04: Very somber moods.
- 0:06SPEAKER_04: I am your host, a depressed Texas Tech fan.
- 0:10SPEAKER_04: My co-host, another depressed Texas Tech fan.
- 0:14SPEAKER_04: This day has been shitty to say the least.
- 0:21SPEAKER_04: We're recording this directly after the Kirby Hokut press conference announcing uh that Chris Beard has officially left Texas Tech to go coach the Longhorns.
- 0:33SPEAKER_04: And, you know, I think speaking for all Texas Tech fans, this is not only a betrayal, but it's just something that we never thought would have come to fruition.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: I think.
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: I think there was some doubt, you know, in some of our minds.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: And we just recorded our pod yesterday that just came out yesterday, and we were very, you know, positive towards him not leaving.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: And uh really he just kind of tricked all of us and just kind of you know really showed his true colors during this whole ordeal.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Um and and decided to go coach a uh uh an interconference rival.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: And uh man, I mean, what what were your initial thoughts uh after hearing the news this morning?
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Uh initially heartbroken, like just immediately sad, not mad, mad came later.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Um, I was just immediately just broken because it was just like whenever it first broke, like my my heart just sunk into the pit of my stomach.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Like I just I couldn't believe what I just read, you know, in the in the way and after you finding out the way you went down, how he's been acting this this past week and the past few months, even um, it's just like maybe we idolized the man way too much.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: And because this kind of came out to be he went against everything he he said he was gonna do in the culture that he built, he thought it's just kind of all looking like it's for show at this point because I guess he didn't really mean the words he'll say.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Um I don't mean to be so you know negative, but I feel like I'm allowed to right now.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: But you are, yeah.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Uh it's just I'm drinking the hard stuff.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: Uh my heart still hurts because it's just you know, TexTech had something really, really special, and you can't help but feel like it's gone right now.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I I agree 100% with what you just said.
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: Um, I I felt a little bit of the same.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Uh I was working and much like most people on a Thursday, um, you know, and just kind of keeping up with it because we all thought something was gonna happen today.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: Um, and when that news popped up, I think the first thing I saw was the Jeff Goodman tweet saying that that Texas hired Chris Beard.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: And uh that came direct it was like a it was like a really short kind of timeline at the beginning of the day because Roy Williams retired from North Carolina first, I think maybe like 30 minutes before the Texas announcement.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: And so we were like, oh shit, now we know we're not only worrying about Texas, but we're worrying about North Carolina now too.
- 3:06SPEAKER_04: And really directly after after the Roy Williams retirement news came out, you gotta think Texas was just like, okay, let's get this done.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: And they did, and they got it done.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, just it looks utter yeah, no, go ahead.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: Go ahead.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say, and when you say they got it done, it looks like they got it done a week ago.
- 3:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: They really did.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: And yeah, it seems like this was uh in a much longer, this has been in discussion for much longer than even this past week.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Maybe even before Shaka was fired.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: Like this is this this feels really scummy because not only did he keep us in the dark for a decision he clearly already made after listening to Kirby Ho Cuts conference, he made us wait until his buyout got cheaper.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Are you serious?
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Like you're gonna you're gonna do that to us, you're gonna you're gonna hinder our ability to go replace you just for because like because UT strapping for cash, aren't they?
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: You know, yeah, yeah.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're really having a real issue with that million dollars, Chris.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it just it it really hurts because right after that final game in the March Man, it's like we're not done.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: We're gonna get this team to Monday night, we're gonna we're gonna take this team to to where we where it belongs, you know, like street dogs.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Well, Chris, now you're now you're a purebred, pet smart little chihuahua.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: You ain't no street dog.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, really just lies.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: They're just constant, constant lies.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: You know, the guy I and and and we heard in the Kirby presser, which was it it actually uplifted me a little bit.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: You know, you you really appreciate Kirby Hokut.
- 4:39SPEAKER_04: Uh his his just pissed, he was pissed off.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: You could tell everything that he just really wanted to say something, but he's such a professional that he couldn't.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: And you know he was holding back a lot of words.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: So I appreciate that from Kirby for sure.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: He's angrier than everyone else.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: I you can really tell.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: Like, and I know that would be some sort of corny thing he would say, you know, like a politician answer, but no, you could see it in his face how devastated and how pissed off he is, and how tired he looks.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: The man looked exhausted.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: He's obviously been at this for he probably hasn't gotten any sleep for days.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so um, I really appreciate that.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: It was some real fearless leading right there, and it kind of reduced my opinion of him.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: So I I really I'm really glad that he's the leader right now because I really appreciated that uh that conference, like you said, immediately made made me feel better, which is the point, obviously, but you can definitely hear it in his voice how emotional he was while keeping a professional attitude.
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: And he said some really interesting things in this press conference.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh, you know, I wrote down a few of them, but uh, first off, months ago, Chris Beard was offered a lifetime contract with us, and he there was pretty clear indication that he did he wanted no part of that.
- 5:54SPEAKER_04: So that was kind of the first domino to fall in all this.
- 5:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, for a guy that's been saying, you know, this is home and uh eventually we're gonna get there, you know.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: Mama called me home.
- 6:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're building something here, you know.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: Uh that's the first domino to fall, and really in the back of his mind, and what he was keeping from everybody is that he was just waiting for the Texas job to open.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: And this is what, and and you know, I I don't blame UT.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: I uh I hate UT for doing this, but I don't blame them for jumping on it and getting a guy who is an alumni who is, you know, all that.
- 6:29SPEAKER_04: But I'm not gonna go into UT because you know that we don't need that right now.
- 6:33SPEAKER_04: What I thought also was interesting in the press conferences, uh, they're hiring a search firm, which most universities do these days, uh, when they're looking for new candidates, and a four-person search committee consisting of Kirby, President Skuvenek, Dusty Womble, of course, you know, had put in the huge investment, one of the biggest donors at Texas Tech for the new practice facility at Texas Tech, the brand new one.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: And then I thought this was interesting too.
- 6:58SPEAKER_04: Tony Batti is going to be the fourth member of this, obviously, uh, Texas Tech basketball legend, really great player, played in the NBA for a lot of years, one of the real first NBA players to come out of Texas Tech.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: So, um, you know, I thought that's that's cool that they're keeping that, keeping the Red Raider faithful and the alumni base in here uh to get this search party started for somebody that really fits this job.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, man.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: I that that kind of brings me to what I was thinking earlier.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: Uh how pissed off are the boosters are right now.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: You know, they just they they poured so much of their own resources into the program because of Chris Beard, because of what he did for the program.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: And and now it just like doesn't even matter.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: You know, it's like it's just I mean, I'm not I'm not just trying to sit here and defend rich guys, but those rich guys made this help make this possible.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: So I just I can't imagine how pissed off they must be right now and how just like angry they are at Chris Beard for hoodwinking them, you know.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: It's just this goes this goes much deeper than just taking a a a dream job.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: It's it's it's him really just giving a big fuck you to allow.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: First F-bomb in the pod history.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: It really, but it really was.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: It just like uh a huge middle finger, a huge middle finger.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: And you know, you talk about coaches that leave programs to go coach other programs, interconference things.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: This is gonna be the revenge game of all revenge games.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, when Texas decides or when they do come to Lubbock uh for that first game back.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: And I mean, you know, we we are a rowdy bunch and we are passionate, and we are gonna give that guy absolute hell.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: It's there, I don't think they'll be able to play any audio from the game in on the broadcast.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: I think they'll be bleeped out the entire time.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: I think there's gonna be a lot of colorful language that includes Chris's name.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: So, and honestly, I think it's deserved.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: I I don't think you do not get a pass.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: You be you you build this and then you turn your back on it, you're gonna get you're gonna get the other side of what you thought we we what we thought you were.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: You know, this is this gonna this is gonna this is like like everyone's been saying, this is gonna be like Baker Mayfield on steroids.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is gonna be horrible.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: This it's gonna sound really bad in a good way for us.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 9:19SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: Really, I uh what pissed me off too was uh Beard saying, calling Kirby this morning, telling him quote unquote, he's ready for a new challenge.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: Like, no, you're not.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: No, you're not either.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: Were you finished?
- 9:35SPEAKER_04: What what what like did you did you accomplish this challenge here at Texas Tech?
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: Because no, you didn't.
- 9:41SPEAKER_04: You didn't do that.
- 9:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you took us to new heights and to uh you know heights that we have never been to before.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: You know, you have been our best coach in history, but you didn't accomplish the goal here.
- 9:52SPEAKER_04: No, you skipped out before you accomplished the goal and you went to go coach Texas.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Okay, you you tied for a Big 12 title and you made it to the national championship game.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Was that really your to-do list at tech?
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Was that what you came here to do?
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: Tie for a Big 12 title and uh go to the go to a super championship game.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: No way, it's just it was just his nice way of saying I'd rather be there.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: And I say nice way, but you could tell how livid Kirby was when he heard that.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: He says, I don't understand it.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: He obviously wouldn't wanted to say like something else, yeah.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Um, he oh he understood it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: He just um obviously, but it's just yeah, I I can't I can't believe Chris.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: I I I just I loved the man, and now I just I I can't I have a freaking tech basketball mouse pad right here in front of me.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: I'm just so angry.
- 10:43SPEAKER_04: You know, we're angry and we're upset, and I think the program itself is obviously gonna take a hit from this, you know.
- 10:51SPEAKER_04: I as much as you know, Kirby wants to stay positive and keep us, you know, engaged and involved, and we still will be.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: We're Texas Tech fans, we're not Chris Beard fans, we're Texas Tech fans.
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: So, you know, we we have faith in this program.
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: Obviously, we've seen it with what Chris Beard has built here.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: He is not the only person that has built this program.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: A lot of different things have gone into this to help us reach where we've reached before, but you know, we're gonna find that next guy, and hopefully that next guy is gonna be doing just the same.
- 11:21SPEAKER_04: We have new practice facilities, we have the best fan base in the Big 12, and probably the nation.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: You know, we just have guys that and and girls that really care about this program and really care about this team and just put everything into it.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: I love I love the passion that I've seen like on social media around this, like and how upset tech fans are, but how little I've seen of oh no, no, we're gonna be irrelevant.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: It's just been nothing but oh my god, F you, I can't wait for the tech the tech UT game.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: Like, that's that's what I've seen for the vast most part, which I really like to see.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: And I mean that that kind of excites me because I feel like the guy, the guy, next guy we hire has to know what mission number one is now, you know.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely, always be better than UT, you know, and not as if that wasn't obviously a goal as a tech program in general, but holy cow is it personal!
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: And I think talking about that, we should go into what effects, what domino effects this leads for the actual team itself and the players, because we've already seen Kyler Edwards has announced he's transferring, uh, which we kind of we kind of thought may be true before that, before Chris Beard even got hired away.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: But you know, now we're gonna see guys.
- 12:34SPEAKER_04: Kevin McCullough had a spooky tweet, you know, saying you know, he's gonna start having to look at his options now.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: Kyler was encouraging it.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: That wasn't cool.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that wasn't cool.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: That that wasn't, I mean, all the love to Kyler, but dude, what do you this the fans love you, man?
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: What are you trying to do?
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: You're trying to, we were like, okay, we get it, you can you can go, but trying to like drag the rest of the team down.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if the team didn't betray you, your coach did.
- 12:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and he just it and you know, a player coach relationship is something like no other with all this stuff.
- 13:05SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't even be surprised if he decided to go to Texas now and go play with Beard.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: But golly, this is gonna be make that game even worse.
- 13:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, this is gonna be even deeper on the team.
- 13:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, I I would be surprised if we don't see a few more transfers out of all this, you know, guys like Tyreek Smith or guys like I don't know, Agbo or or PV, or uh, you know, you know, you just don't know right now because right now they're playing on a team that has no head coach.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: Um, and so we need to make this process extensive.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: Well, we need to be mindful in this process and make a good decision and not rush it, but we also need to get something going here pretty quick because guys are gonna start leaving.
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: It's just it's the state of college basketball right now, it's what players do, they enter the transfer portal as soon as stuff gets hard.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: So, you know, you we can't be going uh too long.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: And Kirby said this may take weeks.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: I you know, you don't have that much time, unfortunately, in today's age of college basketball to you know, you really either need to nail this higher or you need to get somebody in here quick to re-recruit your current players, and that's just what has to be done.
- 14:16SPEAKER_04: There's also you know, a guy like Jalen Tyson who's supposed to be coming in to Texas Tech.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: Now, you know, the guy he committed to is not here anymore.
- 14:25SPEAKER_04: So is he gonna still is he committed to Chris Beard or is he committed to Texas Tech?
- 14:30SPEAKER_04: And you know, he I saw on Twitter that he liked to post uh that Chris Ogden was joining Chris Beard's staff in Austin.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: So, you know, it's it's iffy right now.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: It's it's really murky for the current guys on the team to remain with this team.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: Uh, but and I really don't expect Mac or Shannon to be back for sure now.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: I I don't think there's any way those guys come back.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, we're gonna have a brand new team next year.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: We're gonna have a lot of new players and and we're gonna we're gonna regress a little bit.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: And that's hard to it's a hard pill to swallow, but that's just what comes with it.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Do you know who I hurt for the most on the team though?
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Who's that?
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: Avery Benson.
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he had an emotional kind of tweet.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Oh, I haven't seen that yet.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: I just because he's obviously not gonna go to UT with him.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: I bet he'll stay at tech and play another year, but I I hope he I hope so too.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: He's a he's a good guy to have on the team, but um yeah, I I yeah, and it that's unfortunately just what comes with this whole process.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: So dominoes are gonna fall, it's gonna get worse before it gets better.
- 15:35SPEAKER_04: That's just what's gonna happen.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: Um, but the good news is that this is a new slate, brand new thing.
- 15:42SPEAKER_04: We can bring in a really good guy to come in and coach this program.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's really not a time for the next guy to be negative about the next hire because I think that guy has a lot of resources, a lot, a brand new practice facility.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: He's got access.
- 15:58SPEAKER_04: We are now a destination, yeah, to be at.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I think we should talk about some possible candidates coming up to be the new head coach here.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and before we dig into that, I just want to say like, bring all this energy, like that.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: We're so upset at at what Beard did because how much we like this program.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: Bring that same intense passion and support the next guy even more because of it, you know.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: So bring like this this next guy could be our hero, you know, and we can now Chris Beard's obviously the villain.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: So I'm really looking forward to seeing who we counter that uh Chris with because man, it's it's it's an ex it's it's also an exciting time, you know.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: Like you said, it's a clean slate, and maybe this next next guy is even better.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: There's no point in being doom and gloom about the next guy.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: We can be sad that Chris Beard left us and did what he did to us, but I think the biggest, the best, oh yeah, f you back is keeping that fire and being just as good, if not better, than we are now.
- 16:52SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 16:53SPEAKER_04: So I think the hottest, the hottest candidate right now is is Mark Adams.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, when you're talking, when you're just talking about Twitter, you know, the still on staff instant.
- 17:04SPEAKER_04: He is still on staff.
- 17:05SPEAKER_04: That was an interesting thing that that uh whoever pointed out, uh, they took Chris Beard's name off of the staff directory at tech, but the two that have and they took guys like Ulrich Malege, who is you know a top assistant who would be a big time loss for us uh in terms of recruiting.
- 17:21SPEAKER_04: He's a great recruiter um for the for the team, but two names remained on Texas Tech's directory, and those guys were Mark Adams and Sean Sutton.
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: So uh I thought that's interesting.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: I I you know you'd think they already announced that Chris Ogden was gonna join Chris Beard's staff in Austin, and they didn't announce Mark Adams.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: So, you know, he could be a real, real candidate uh to be head coach at Texas Tech, and and really it kind of remains a lot of that culture.
- 17:50SPEAKER_04: A lot of that culture is gonna remain with hiring Mark Adams.
- 17:54SPEAKER_04: The thing I well, and you go ahead.
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: What what do you think?
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: I was just gonna say it look at every former player who's still like who who cares, tech fans.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: It's Texas Tech that matters, not Chris Beard.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Um, like you know, you're seeing all that from this these former players.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: They're saying that you gotta hire Mark Adams.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: That was our dude.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so that really that speaks volumes.
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: Guys like Norren love this man.
- 18:15SPEAKER_04: Norrence Odiasi, Keenan Evans, Justin Gray, those type of guys are saying hire Mark Adams.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: Like, this is the dude that really the OGs.
- 18:23SPEAKER_04: The O yeah, the OGs, and the and I mean, if anything, a player, a former Texas Tech player telling you that is very telling and very uh, you know, uh uplifting to see if we hire Mark Adams.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: I I think the thing with Adams that we have to keep out with is he's 64 years old.
- 18:41SPEAKER_04: He's been at it a long time.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: This is uh he's never really had a power five coaching job before.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: He's obviously been under beard at Little Rock and then a tech for his whole tenure there.
- 18:51SPEAKER_04: Um, so I I'm not gonna say it's it's a bad hire.
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm actually would be very happy if we kept Mark Adams on staff and made him the head coach.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: But uh he's 64 years old, and that's you know, that's a late age to start building a program.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: You know, that's usually the the age at which guys start, you know, kind of just settling for stuff and and kind of you know settling down with their with their families and their kids and all that kind of stuff.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, I don't know Mark Adams' family life, so you know he may just be ready, ready for the moment and as fired up as ever.
- 19:22SPEAKER_04: So I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna, you know, try to try to read the guy's mind or let y'all know what he's thinking through all this, but uh I think it would be a great hire.
- 19:30SPEAKER_04: I think it would be.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: I I agree.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: It's it keeps it keeps that culture that we love here.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: And he's a West Texas guy.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: He seems like a Texas tech guy.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Obviously, he's not leaving us for UT, or as so it seems right now.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Um so I I I really like it, especially just what I like the most is the way is our favorite players talk about him.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: Like those were those were you and I's ears, uh, the players you were naming off.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Those were our guys that we went to the court and watched.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: Um, and they were the beginning of this revolution in Texas Tech basketball.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: So I trust them immensely.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: So if they think he's the guy, I I think obviously Kirby Holcutt should give him a good look.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: And I'm sure he's going to.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: I'm sure that's gonna happen very soon.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: And I, you know, we it Mark Adams isn't the only guy, they're gonna probably interview a few different candidates.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: I think some interesting names to bring up uh when you're talking about Texas coaches and guys who are familiar with the landscape, familiar with recruiting in Texas.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, Joe Golding, Abilene Christian's head coach, uh, obviously friend of Chris Beard, and you know, a guy that had had a really, really good season with with Abilene Christian, upsetting the Longhorns in the tournament, really running their conference for the most part.
- 20:39SPEAKER_04: They played tech very well when they came to town.
- 20:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, they had a really, really good year, and this guy seems like he's fired up.
- 20:46SPEAKER_04: You know, I think he would be a good option.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: And then also, keeping with the Texas theme, Grant uh McCasslin, the North Texas head coach, uh, guy who has been at Texas Tech before, knows the program, uh, and and had another great season with North Texas.
- 21:02SPEAKER_04: You know, they won a game in the tournament.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, those those are two good options that I think we're gonna take a look at as well.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: I think those are the top three favorites from from the initial look.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: I'm sure maybe other names will pop up and be like, wow, that's also a great choice.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: But I really do want to stick with the Texas scene.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: I think understanding how to recruit Texas is pinnacle for a school like Texas Tech.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: We're not really gonna go and be able to go and pillage from other states as much as we'd like to be able to, but we have amazing talent here at the Lone Star State.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: Like the basketball scene here is really taken off.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: So I really like uh I really like the idea of keeping a guy who understands the Texas culture and even better for whenever we talk about these guys like uh Abel Abeline Christian, the West Texas understanding and UNT understanding the uh you know, the not the sexy market, you know, not uh just understanding how you recruit in the area and getting awesome players to get fired up for you uh at your program.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: So I like it.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: I like what you named off.
- 21:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: And I think, you know, uh coming kind of a wild card a little bit.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: He's still a Texas Tech guy.
- 22:06SPEAKER_04: Darvin Ham's name has been thrown around a few times.
- 22:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, he has been a longtime assistant now in the NBA.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: He's been an assistant now with Milwaukee for the last three years, I think.
- 22:16SPEAKER_04: Um, and he's another option, uh a guy that former player, uh well respected, obviously played at Texas Tech, knows the program very well, uh, was still involved with the program.
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: You could see him in in videos and stuff that that the media that Texas Tech Media put out this year.
- 22:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, he's still Texas Tech Red and Black through and through.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: So that's another interesting option.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: And then I'm gonna throw in, I'm gonna throw in another one just, you know, to throw out a real wild card.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: And that's Porter Mosier, the uh uh Loyola Chicago head coach.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: Been a hot name now ever since Loyola made their final four run, you know, a few years ago.
- 22:51SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 22:51SPEAKER_04: So I think a lot of teams are gonna be looking at him.
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: I think it's I you know, maybe he's looking Texas Tech, like like I said earlier, is a destination, has great resources, is a good-looking job for a lot of people.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: So uh I I would keep his name out his name uh an eye out too.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: For real.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much to Tubby Smith and I guess Chris Beard.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: I just don't want to give him any props for making this a a school where people want to come and uh coach because I don't I can't see a world where any of those kit coaches don't consider it.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so um, and the Darvin Ham one's kind of fun because he has that NBA experience and he's the former player, so he'd obviously be able to come in here and get players fired up for that.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: Um, so I those are all very exciting names.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: The I haven't heard the Leo Chicago one out in the the sphere yet, but uh your reasonings are great, and I could see I could see him definitely try to take a peek at a P5 job in the best conference in the country.
- 23:44SPEAKER_04: He's definitely a long shot, and he's not like Texas or anything like associated, but I'm just thinking in terms of Texas Tech being a uh a job that people want, uh, and this guy being a very hot candidate right now for a P5 head coaching job, you know, I I just think I thought I'd throw his name in there.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: Obviously, I don't have any like any insider information or anything.
- 24:08SPEAKER_04: I'm not close to the uh Porter Mosier circle, but you know, who knows?
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: Who knows?
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: I I I I do like your options there.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think we will the odds are we go with someone in the Texas sphere.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I I mean all those are great candidates.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to see how it unfolds here within the next two weeks, as Kirby said.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: So I would say the first three guys you mentioned are probably gonna be the ones that come out of the hat.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, and and it's a it's an extensive interview process.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: I don't expect Kirby and and this group of this four-person search committee to be light on it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: I I expect it to be a pretty extensive process.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: Um, so you know, during that time we're probably gonna see some bad news, see some guys transfer out, and and that's just gonna be what it is.
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: But there's still a lot to look forward to with this basketball program.
- 24:56SPEAKER_04: I know this is a bump in the road, and it's a big bump in the road, but it's something that we can move past as a fan base.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, Chris Beard was not the only person that was making this program run, you know.
- 25:07SPEAKER_04: There was a lot of people that went into it.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: So uh now that those people are gone, there's just more room for people to take their place and to even be better.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: People that want to even more.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: So keep your heads up, Red Raider Nation.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, this this is still a special program, and like I said, there's no better fu to be good, you know.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: If we get X Tech keeps kicking UT ass, my god, that is ecstasy.
- 25:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: And we are going to go all out next season to kick their ass and just really just give them give them hell.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: How about that Kirby comment saying, Hey, whenever we go to the UT, our fans will uh still show out more than theirs.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: I loved that slide.
- 25:47SPEAKER_04: And he referred to that he referred to him as that school, like he's so mad right now.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: So mad.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he the only UT respect he gave at all was Del Conte.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: That was it.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, that was that was so sick.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: That was just that was just about the best press conference he could have had because he still maintained professionalism while still kind of throwing the elbow at Chris Beard, like, hey dude, what the hell?
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you go he, I just like for the people that don't get it, it's just this was the worst possible outcome imaginable.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: And that's why people are like getting out tech fans, it's like this is alma mater, it's it's a better job.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: No, first of all, the second part, no, and the first part, bro, you don't get it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: We hate UT.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: Everyone in the state loathes them.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: And this is just the most UT move of all time.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: They're just like, we're the big honcho, we take what we want, and Crispier just fed right into it.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: They're just it's just a spoiled fan base.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: It's it's a fan base that is arrogant, that is spoiled out of their minds, and they just don't appreciate how good they have it, with in terms of unlimited money, in terms of recruits just begging to come there because of their brand.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: They just they don't know what it's like to be, you know, to grind and to really get through it.
- 27:14SPEAKER_04: They don't know, they don't understand it.
- 27:15SPEAKER_04: And that's what's and that's the most frustrating part, I think, when I'm talking about UT.
- 27:19SPEAKER_04: Uh obviously there's good fans and there's bad fans.
- 27:22SPEAKER_04: I think with UT, there's a lot of bad fans.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: So it's the biggest brand in the country.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: So you're gonna get you're gonna get a whole lot of people that just want the the brand and the wins.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: So it's it's it's very few of them that are just you know passionate good fans like my uncle, you know, that aren't like dicks about it for sure.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: Um it's still heartbreaking.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: Uh and kind of another thing to bring up, uh, so there was like this weird rumor.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: I doubt there's any way to it.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: I just think we maybe we could talk about it on the podcast.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: Was Chris was complaining about the uh Under Armour contract versus Nike?
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: Why did that even go around?
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: I cannot imagine that being a reason to leave.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: No, Kirby Kirby shut that down in the press conference.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: He was like, There's no there's no validity to that.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: Under Armour, I I you know, I don't get people's deal.
- 28:08SPEAKER_04: It's like obviously, you know, whatever.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: Nike and Nike Under Armour Adidas, like Under Armour has been a really good sponsor with us, has been a really good partner to Texas Tech.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: There's no reason, yeah.
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: There's no reason why that would piss Chris Muirdo enough to leave.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Why what player is basing the school off of what logos on their jersey?
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: That is the most shallow player I've ever heard of.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: If that's the chance, it's it definitely happens.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: It definitely, but it's this it's the same as if people choose like USC or something because it's in LA.
- 28:42SPEAKER_04: Like it's it's the same type of deal.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: That is so that is some weird tribal corporatism.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Like, if you're not working for the company, that's weird, dude.
- 28:51SPEAKER_03: Like that to make it matter that much.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: I think it's kind of cool because you know, Under Armour's only at a few schools, I think that kind of makes it a little unique.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, and like are y'all really think that AM is suffering recruit-wise because they're Adidas?
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Because that's definitely worse than Under Armour.
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, come on, yeah.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: I do well, in terms of uniforms, no way, like sexiness and everything.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Like, under Adidas is not as sexy as Under Armour, and you think they're suffering with recruits?
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: Come on, yeah.
- 29:17SPEAKER_04: I I don't buy into most of that, you know.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, but I will say today I was sad, but I would have been more of a wreck had the Kawhi Leonard thing not already happened to me, and because that broke me.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: That really that really that really warmed you up for this, you think?
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: I I think it did.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: I think it helped me handle it better than I would have because uh you know, going through that whole process in in 2018 when we when he I saw that Wosh tweet that said Kawhi Leonard once out of San Antonio, I was I was a mess.
- 29:52SPEAKER_04: I didn't talk to anybody for like a day.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: Wow, I was like, I can't like I I'm passionate about my teams, and you know, uh putting I tell I told you and and Austin this in in our group text earlier, but there's only a few certain guys that I have put 100% of my faith in, and Chris Beard was one of them.
- 30:10SPEAKER_04: And that you know, it's really it's like Greg Popovich, Tim Duncan, and Chris Beard.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: And Tim Tadlock.
- 30:17SPEAKER_04: And Tim Tadlock, and but uh and and for Chris Beard to do this and just prove that he is the complete opposite person of what I thought he was, uh, it stings, but I I think I can thank Kawhi Leonard in some ways uh for uh preparing me for something like this uh as a sports fan.
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: But I and I said this in a tweet earlier, and it remains true.
- 30:41SPEAKER_04: I appreciate both of them.
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: I appreciate Chris Beard for his time here for the heights that he brought us to, but I absolutely wish him the worst moving forward, and I hope he does he gets nothing out of what he thinks he's gonna get at UT.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: And I hope he doesn't succeed in the slightest.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: 100% can't agree at like at all more.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: That's exactly how I feel as well.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna always be grateful for the the memory of going with Austin to Minneapolis for the final four, like one of the best times of my life, obviously.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: But now I I hope he never comes even close to doing it again at anywhere, no matter what.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: I hope his career is like basically done in the sense of being a big time coach.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: I hope he ends up I hope he ends up like every UT coach in the last five years.
- 31:27SPEAKER_04: You know, I hope he ends up like Tom Herman or like Shock of Smart, where just disappointing, and and basically the UT fan base is shitting on you for three or four straight years.
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: I I I hope that happens to him.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: And even when you're doing well, it's not even that big of a deal.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just they won't fill your they would they will not be the same fan energy that you got in Lubbock.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: You're it's not.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: You've seen that stadium.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: You've been in there, you've coached in there when more than half of the people have been Red Raiders.
- 31:55SPEAKER_04: So yeah, uh, you know, this blows my mind and it blows everybody's mind, but we're gonna get through it.
- 32:00SPEAKER_04: It's not, you know, it's not the end of the world.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: This isn't friggin' apocalypse or anything.
- 32:04SPEAKER_04: No, it's a it's a bump in the road, it's a big bump in the road, but we will move past it.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: Now it just gives Susie another reason to hate UT.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: I just I didn't know that was possible.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: I I just didn't.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Uh there's very few things that could have made that possible, and I just want you all to take a moment and appreciate the kind of coach uh who I think is now the greatest coach in Texas Tech history.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: That is Tim Tadlock.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: Like, take a moment and appreciate a man that can't be bought.
- 32:31SPEAKER_04: There's very few of them, as we've seen, and he's one of them.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: So uh appreciate baseball.
- 32:37SPEAKER_04: Uh they're they're kicking butt right now, and they're gonna kick butt for years to come because we have a really loyal guy at the helm.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: Uh and hopefully he he did what Chris Beard should have done.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: He he already gave UC the cold shoulder saying, I'm happy.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: This is where I am.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and you know, it it it is what it is.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: Tim Tadlock rocks, he's the best.
- 32:55SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm gonna have to cut Chris Beard out of the outro, which I'm perfectly fine doing.
- 32:59SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: And and hopefully we get the next guy in here soon.
- 33:02SPEAKER_04: He's gotta give us a good quip.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: For the outro.
- 33:06SPEAKER_04: Get us a good open presser so I can cut some stuff and put a stupid put a stupid beat by it and put a stupid, just put some dumb shit going on.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I want to I want to hear something real good after.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: We'll always have that.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: That's the best part of the outro, anyway.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: So we had to get rid of Chris.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: Maybe we'll have to get rid of Matt Wells, but oh wow, always be there.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: Always.
- 33:33SPEAKER_04: I love that guy.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: Well, all right.
- 33:37SPEAKER_04: Closing statement.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: Keep your heads up, Red Raider fans.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: This is a bump in the road.
- 33:41SPEAKER_04: We will move past it.
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: Uh uh Chris screw Chris Beard, screw Texas.
- 33:46SPEAKER_04: Uh, we're better.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: Can you believe this is this is our conversation right now?
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: Screw him.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: I don't care.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is but I'm I'm excited for the future.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: I think Kirby Holcut's got his got his vision, so I'm happy for it.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: Let's go, Red Raiders.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Wreck'em.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: I'm ready to just destroy UT in every single sport.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: I'm ready.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: Fan base, let's unite.
- 34:06SPEAKER_04: Let's get it, let's get it, kick UT's ass.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: Always wreck'em tech.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: Wreck'em tech.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Uh wow.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Uh we fed off of it.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: I think it goes back and forth.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Tremendous.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
