- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Global News podcast on YouTube, where we
- 0:02Speaker 1: go behind the headlines of a story and why it matters.
- 0:06Speaker 1: On this episode, we're discussing the visit of the Saudi
- 0:09Speaker 1: Crown Prince Muhammed bin Salman. He's visiting Donald Trump in
- 0:14Speaker 1: Washington and it's his mission to reclaim his place on
- 0:17Speaker 1: the world stage after the uproar caused by the twenty
- 0:20Speaker 1: eighteen killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Hashoji. It looks like
- 0:24Speaker 1: Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler is expected to get the
- 0:28Speaker 1: pomp and pageantry of a lavish welcome when he meets
- 0:31Speaker 1: Donald Trump at the White House in his first visit
- 0:34Speaker 1: to the US since the killing of the high profile
- 0:37Speaker 1: Saudi critic. So what might the two leaders discuss. Well,
- 0:40Speaker 1: they are expected to sign deals on defense and civilian
- 0:44Speaker 1: nuclear power in what seems to be a sign of
- 0:46Speaker 1: how the Saudi leader has been rehabilitated in the eyes
- 0:50Speaker 1: of the Trump administration. And what about the role of
- 0:53Speaker 1: Saudi Arabia in the Middle East and how it might
- 0:56Speaker 1: help in carrying out Trump's peace plan for Gaza. To
- 1:00Speaker 1: discuss this further, I've got our State Department correspondent Tom
- 1:02Speaker 1: Bateman who's on the line from Washington, and Rushdi Abu
- 1:06Speaker 1: Alouf correspondent who's based in Istanbul. Tom Let's kick off
- 1:10Speaker 1: with Muhammad bin Saman and how in the eyes of
- 1:12Speaker 1: Donald Trump has managed to rehabilitate his image and gain
- 1:16Speaker 1: this lavish welcome to the White House.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, that started in twenty eighteen, when, as you've mentioned,
- 1:21Speaker 2: the Saudi dissident and columnist who was based in the
- 1:27Speaker 2: United States wrote for the Washington Post newspaper was murdered
- 1:31Speaker 2: and his body dismembered by Saudi agents at the Saudi
- 1:35Speaker 2: consulate in Istanbul. As I say, back in twenty eighteen. Now,
- 1:40Speaker 2: after that there was global outrage and really a sense
- 1:43Speaker 2: of isolation for Muhammad bin Salman, the Crown Prince. An
- 1:48Speaker 2: intelligence assessment by the CIA concluded that he had approved
- 1:53Speaker 2: the operation that led to Hashogji's death, and although he
- 1:58Speaker 2: always denied any prior knowledge, he did later say that
- 2:02Speaker 2: he took responsibility for it as the leader of the country. Now,
- 2:07Speaker 2: what then happened over the next few years into the
- 2:11Speaker 2: Biden administration. You had a President Joe Biden, who campaigned
- 2:15Speaker 2: on the idea of making Saudi Arabia a Pariah over
- 2:19Speaker 2: that issue, but also the supply. The US supply of
- 2:23Speaker 2: weapons to Saudi Arabia, giving its role in the war
- 2:26Speaker 2: in Yemen, came under increasing question, a lot of pressure
- 2:29Speaker 2: from Democrats during the administration, and in the end the
- 2:32Speaker 2: Biden administration cut off offensive weapons as they put it,
- 2:37Speaker 2: then to the Saudis. The major turning point in all
- 2:40Speaker 2: of this, strategically, it was the Russian invasion of Ukraine
- 2:44Speaker 2: because that caused a global surge in the price of fuel,
- 2:46Speaker 2: so gas prices were going up in the US. Joe
- 2:49Speaker 2: Biden went to Saudi Arabia in twenty twenty two, and
- 2:53Speaker 2: then you saw this sort of start of a rehabilitation
- 2:56Speaker 2: of Mohammed bin Salman in the eyes of the West.
- 2:59Speaker 2: There was very famously, or perhaps notoriously a fist bump
- 3:03Speaker 2: between President Biden and the Crown Prince when he visited
- 3:09Speaker 2: Read and then you saw a process really of reintegration
- 3:12Speaker 2: back into the fold of the Americans and the West
- 3:16Speaker 2: more broadly. And then into this second Trump term. What
- 3:20Speaker 2: has happened, I mean, one of the big changes has
- 3:22Speaker 2: been caused by the war in Gaza, and the role
- 3:26Speaker 2: of the Saudis has become absolutely critical in the American
- 3:29Speaker 2: led attempts to try to get the ceasefire and a
- 3:34Speaker 2: broader stabilization of that situation. So they have leant heavily
- 3:40Speaker 2: on the Saudis, and then you have all the personal
- 3:42Speaker 2: and business connections between mister Trump and crucially his family,
- 3:46Speaker 2: and not just the Saudis, but a lot of Golf
- 3:50Speaker 2: Arab leaders. And so here I think you see the
- 3:53Speaker 2: sort of zenith of that process with Mohammed bin Salman
- 3:56Speaker 2: coming to Washington for the first time in seven years
- 4:01Speaker 2: in all but name a state visit for the de
- 4:03Speaker 2: facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, you know, visiting the White House,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and there will be an announcement about the things that
- 4:09Speaker 2: the Saudi Crown Prince wants for Saudi Arabia and in
- 4:12Speaker 2: return multi billion dollar investments from read into the United States.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So it is quite the turnaround then from a Saudi perspective,
- 4:21Speaker 1: from a Muhammad Bill and Salman perspective as well, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: you outline how that's happened. But I guess now when
- 4:26Speaker 1: they both sit down together, the two leaders, what will
- 4:29Speaker 1: the objectives be as well, Because there are some fears
- 4:32Speaker 1: as well from the American side, particularly from some defense officials.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean what Mhammed bin Salman wants three things. Broadly,
- 4:39Speaker 2: he wants a defense packed a security deal with the
- 4:43Speaker 2: United States. It looks as though he'll get something like
- 4:45Speaker 2: that which would effectively say that the US would support
- 4:51Speaker 2: the Saudis militarily if the country ever came under attack. Now,
- 4:55Speaker 2: President Trump signed a similar arrangement recently with Katar. That
- 4:59Speaker 2: was our the Israelis attacked Doha, you remember a few
- 5:04Speaker 2: months back. So the Saudis wants something like that. That
- 5:06Speaker 2: will be probably an executive order, so it won't have
- 5:08Speaker 2: all the backing of a proper congressionally backed treaty, and
- 5:13Speaker 2: a future president could in effect undo that. But that's
- 5:16Speaker 2: very important to the Saudis. They also want to buy
- 5:19Speaker 2: F thirty five's the most advanced American fighter jet. The
- 5:24Speaker 2: reason that's regionally important is because the Americans have never
- 5:27Speaker 2: allowed other countries in the region, aside from Israel, to
- 5:31Speaker 2: have the same level of military hardware. Now only the
- 5:35Speaker 2: Israelis have F thirty five jets in the Middle East,
- 5:37Speaker 2: So that has the potential to change the regional balance
- 5:42Speaker 2: of military power and crucially, Israel's aerial superiority in the region.
- 5:47Speaker 2: The other thing that Mahmmi bin Salman wants is access
- 5:50Speaker 2: to American nuclear technology. They want to start civilian nuclear
- 5:54Speaker 2: power programs, so nuclear energy are basically for Saudi Arabia.
- 5:59Speaker 2: They say they have no intentions to later weaponize that
- 6:03Speaker 2: kind of a program. But all of these things very
- 6:06Speaker 2: contentious for some of the reasons I mentioned before, the
- 6:08Speaker 2: concerns about increased levels of armed supply to the Saudis.
- 6:14Speaker 2: In return, the Saudi leadership is touting a six hundred
- 6:18Speaker 2: billion dollar investment into the US in areas across the economy.
- 6:23Speaker 2: That builds on a huge amount of sovereign wealth investment
- 6:26Speaker 2: that the Saudis have already made into the United States.
- 6:29Speaker 2: So quite a transactional deal going on. But the Americans
- 6:33Speaker 2: see it as part of their security interest to have
- 6:35Speaker 2: an increasingly strength strong relationship with the Saudis, to try
- 6:39Speaker 2: and offset Chinese influence for example, in the region, and
- 6:43Speaker 2: crucially to build a more secure Middle East in their
- 6:47Speaker 2: eyes against the threat of the Iranians. So lots of
- 6:52Speaker 2: strategic interest going on. The big thing that President Trump
- 6:55Speaker 2: would want, the big prize, would be to get a
- 6:59Speaker 2: normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, but that
- 7:03Speaker 2: is not on the cards at the moment, namely because
- 7:06Speaker 2: the Saudis would demand an independent Palestinian state as a
- 7:10Speaker 2: quid pro quo of such a deal, and certainly the
- 7:12Speaker 2: current Israeli government is in no way going to accept that.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Okay, let's get another perspective then from Rushdi Abu aluf
- 7:20Speaker 1: Our Gods, a correspondent based in Istanbul. Rushdi, I guess,
- 7:24Speaker 1: going forward, then what sort of a role could Saudi
- 7:27Speaker 1: Arabia play when it comes to the conversation in terms
- 7:31Speaker 1: of carrying out the next phase of President Trump's peace plan?
- 7:34Speaker 1: And then how would this affect the region?
- 7:37Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Since the beginning of the war.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I mean, the soldiers have been supplying Gaza with a
- 7:43Speaker 3: lot of aid coming through Egypt into Gaza. They were
- 7:47Speaker 3: not involved in the ongoing negotiation to secure the ceasefire,
- 7:53Speaker 3: but they were supporting the effort. And we have seen
- 7:57Speaker 3: the Soldi Is backing the US solution yesterday and even
- 8:02Speaker 3: before during the first stage of the Sea is fire.
- 8:05Speaker 3: WI the Saudis were involved in making this happening, and
- 8:11Speaker 3: it seems to be willing to take part in this
- 8:13Speaker 3: and being Gus. They believe that without the Saudis it
- 8:18Speaker 3: is going to be very hard to rebuild. Guys, given
- 8:22Speaker 3: the special relation between the Saudi King and the Saudi
- 8:28Speaker 3: Crown Prince and the Americans, and we are welcome to
- 8:33Speaker 3: see the ground Prince in the White House and they
- 8:38Speaker 3: bebling Gaza. Hope that he will discuss in detail the
- 8:43Speaker 3: plan for Gaza.
