- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Tuesday, it's the
- 0:1522nd of October, and you have invited me into your day.
- 0:19And for that, friends, I am so grateful because you and I get
- 0:23to continue reading through the story.
- 0:25Well, yesterday we kind of hit that peak, the climax where
- 0:29Nehemiah finished building the wall around Jerusalem and all of
- 0:33his enemies, the neighbours who had just peeved that they were
- 0:37trying to do this. Well, they didn't get their way
- 0:40and they couldn't stop Nehemiah and his crew.
- 0:44So here we are on the other end of this, and now it's time for
- 0:47Nehemiah to get on with what governors do, which is
- 0:50registering all the people who have come there and completed
- 0:53this work. And so here in this chapter, we
- 0:56have another one of these chapters with long lists of
- 0:58families and the number of people in those families.
- 1:02And I don't want you to get bogged down in all these names
- 1:05and numbers, but what I want you to do is hear God's faithfulness
- 1:10to these people. These are God's people that
- 1:13lived at that time and were led to achieve this incredible
- 1:18thing. When God is faithful to them and
- 1:21their families and bringing them home.
- 1:23Perhaps you can reflect as we read through these things on the
- 1:26people in your life that God has been faithful to and the
- 1:30promises that he has made to them and to us.
- 1:35Yes, this God is still active and alive and very much a part
- 1:39of the world and our lives. So let us reflect on that as we
- 1:44read this chapter together, which is Nehemiah Chapter 7.
- 1:58After the wall was finished and I had set up the doors and the
- 2:02gates, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
- 2:07I gave the responsibility of governing Jerusalem to my
- 2:10brother Hananiah, along with Hananiah, the commander of the
- 2:14fortress, for he was a faithful man who feared God more than
- 2:17most. I said to them, Do not leave the
- 2:20gates open during the hottest part of the day, and even while
- 2:24the gatekeepers are on duty, have them shut and bar the
- 2:27doors. Appoint the residents of
- 2:30Jerusalem to act as guards, everyone on a regular watch,
- 2:34some will serve as sentry posts, and some in front of their own
- 2:37homes. And that time the city was large
- 2:42and spacious, but the population was small and none of the houses
- 2:46had been rebuilt. So my God gave me the idea to
- 2:50call together all the nobles and leaders of the city along with
- 2:53the ordinary citizens for registration.
- 2:57I had found the genealogical record of those who had first
- 3:00returned to Judah. This is what was written there.
- 3:04Here is the list of the Jewish exiles of the provinces who
- 3:07returned from their captivity. King Nebuchadnezzar had deported
- 3:12them to Babylon, but now they returned to Jerusalem and the

- 6:23Asaph. 148 The gatekeepers of the families of Shalom, Atta,
- 6:30Talmon, Achab, Hatata and Shabba. 138 The descendants of
- 6:37the following temple servants returned from exile.
- 6:41Zia Hassafar, Tibayoth, Kerios Saya Pedon Lebanon, Hagabah
- 6:50Shalmai, Hanan Gidel Gaha Raya Resin nekada gazam uzza, Pasiya,
- 7:02Basai, Myanm, Nephisim, Bakbak, Hakafah, Harur, Baslath,
- 7:11Mehrdah, Harsha, Barkos, Sisera, Tamar, Naziah and Hatafah.
- 7:20The descendants of these servants of King Solomon
- 7:22returned from exile. Satai, Hassifereth, Peruda,
- 7:28Jala, Darkon, Gidel, Shephatiah, Hatal, Pokareth, Hazabaim, and
- 7:36AMI in all the temple servants and the descendants of Solomon's
- 7:41servants numbered 392. Another group returned at this
- 7:46time from the towns of Telmala, Telhasha, Karab, Adan, and IMA.
- 7:54However, they could not prove that they or their families were
- 7:56descendants of Israel. This group included the families
- 8:00of Delilah, Tobiah, and Nakoda, a total of 642 people.
- 8:06Three families of priests Hebiah, Hakos and Barzalai also
- 8:12returned. This Barzalai had married a
- 8:15woman who was a descendant of Barzalai of Gilead, and he had
- 8:19taken her family name. They searched for their names in
- 8:22the genealogical records, but they were not found, so they
- 8:26were disqualified from serving as priests.
- 8:29The governor told them not to eat the priest's share of food
- 8:31from the sacrifices until a priest could consult the Lord
- 8:35about the matter by using the Urim and Thummim, the sacred
- 8:39lots. So a total of 42,360 people
- 8:44returned to Judah, in addition to 7337 servants and 245
- 8:51singers, both men and women. They took with them 736 horses,
- 8:58245 mules, 453 camels and 6720 donkeys.
- 9:07Some of the family leaders gave gifts for the work.
- 9:10The governor gave to the treasury 1000 gold coins, 50
- 9:15gold basins and 530 robes for the priests.
- 9:19The other leaders gave to the treasury a total of 20,000 gold
- 9:23coins and some 2750 lbs of silver for the work.
- 9:29The rest of the people gave 20,000 gold coins, about 2500
- 9:34lbs of silver, and 67 robes for the priests.
- 9:38So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the
- 9:42temple servants, and some of the common people settled near
- 9:46Jerusalem. The rest of the people returned
- 9:49to their own towns throughout Israel in October when the
- 9:55Israelites had settled in their towns.
- 10:07Our loving Godfather, Son, and Holy Spirit, we pray to you
- 10:12today with great gratitude and thanks for everything that you
- 10:17do for us, but more importantly, for who you are.
- 10:22Our God, our Father, for all that you have done through time
- 10:25and space to show us your love for us, including the gift of
- 10:30your Son, Jesus. Jesus, for all you did for us,
- 10:35for that sacrifice that you gave, and for showing us the
- 10:38true heart of who you are, who the Father is by the way, that
- 10:43you loved and gave of yourself for us.
- 10:46And today we thank you for your Holy Spirit, this Spirit that
- 10:52moved in those people all that time ago as they moved back to
- 10:56their homelands and rebuilt that wall around their city to set up
- 11:01their lives once again in the land that you provided for them.
- 11:04Our Holy Spirit, here you are in US, moving us each day,
- 11:09comforting us and teaching us everything we need to know about
- 11:14Jesus. Come Holy Spirit, grow in US,
- 11:20transform us not just our minds to know more and more about
- 11:24Jesus and His will for us, but also transforming our hearts so
- 11:29that we choose in a deeper and deeper way on a daily basis to
- 11:34live for you. And that your fruits would ripen
- 11:37in us to become so evident to everyone around us so that they
- 11:42are captured by you and your heart for them.
- 11:46Now we pray all of this in the saving name of Jesus, Amen.
