- 0:43football four Here on ninety seven three ESP and Andrew,
- 0:47welcome in. How you doing today?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Doing well? Josh, Good to be with you for you.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Before we dig anything specific, was there something that was
- 0:56eye opening or if you caught your eye the most
- 0:59the last two days at these joint practices, because the
- 1:02last time these two teams played it felt like Day
- 1:05one and Day two were completely different animals. Was it
- 1:08a similar vibe this time, Whether there's something that stood
- 1:10out to you the last two days.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah. So the first day I really fixated on the offense,
- 1:17and I thought that Jalen Hurts looked largely confounded by
- 1:21what the Browns were looking to accomplish that day, and
- 1:25he threw a couple of interceptions. I'll only credited him
- 1:27with the one that I saw in seven on sevens
- 1:29where linebacker Devin Bush jumped in front of him and
- 1:33he was trying to get it to Dallas Goddard, but
- 1:36it looked like he was a little scattershot. Obviously, that
- 1:39happens when you have Miles Garrett rushing the quarterback. At
- 1:42Miles Garrett completely Rex practice, there was a number of
- 1:45different times where you could have credited him with the sack,
- 1:48and there was some interior pressure. I thought the Eagles
- 1:51locked it up pretty well against the run. Will Shipley
- 1:53had some nice runs. AJ Dillon had some really nice runs,
- 1:57but largely from an offensive perspective, I didn't think the
- 2:00Eagles were particularly sharp on day one. Davonte Smith scored
- 2:04a touchdown. AJ Dillon scored a touchdown on a little
- 2:08dump off there, and Davante is so automatic in these
- 2:10practices you almost take it for granted, but everything he
- 2:13does looks so effortless. But really, aside from that, nothing
- 2:17particularly stood out from an offensive standpoint, And then today
- 2:21I focus solely on the defense.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Let's go back to what you said about the offense,
- 2:24because Nick Sirianni himself was very complimentary about the run
- 2:29game offensively in camp so far. So what have your
- 2:33observations been of what is basically a recalibrated backfield At
- 2:38this point, you know there's no more Kenny Gamewell. He
- 2:40was a staple of team the last couple of years,
- 2:42and now it's the baton has been pasted. I'll we
- 2:45call it to Will Shipley and AJ Dillon behind Saquon.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Well. I mean, if training camps any indication, Veagles are
- 2:53again going to have another high octane rushing attack, and
- 2:58I really like this backfields. They have a balanced, unique
- 3:02attack with say Kwon Barkley, who's the dynamic bellcal and
- 3:06he can do it all. Then you have an ideal
- 3:08change of pace running back and Will Shipley, who is
- 3:11such a natural pass catcher and has juice after the
- 3:14catch and he's a developing player in terms of pass pro.
- 3:18Then AJ Dillon has some wiggle and again, that's all
- 3:21relative because he is two hundred and fifty pounds or thereabouts.
- 3:26But he's shown some nice bursts and some catching ability
- 3:29out of the backfield. So I think they're all going
- 3:31to compliment each other quite well. And then you have,
- 3:34of course, the league's best offensive line paving the way.
- 3:37I do believe it. That's going to be an emphasis
- 3:41for this offense. They're going to continue to lean on
- 3:42the running game, and they have the players to do it.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Andrews Checko joining us, of course, he covers the Eagles
- 3:48inside the Birds dot Com, Inside the Birds Podcast. At
- 3:52Andrew de Checko on the Twitter x platform, you mentioned
- 3:54the offensive line good news is Land and Diggerson may
- 3:58it appears to practice today. Bad news. He was hitting
- 4:01out beers Aw the lineman. He was not practicing himself.
- 4:05There's no literal timetable that I know. They're hoping Dickerson
- 4:08might be back for a week one, there's no guarantee
- 4:10of that. So what is your perspective right now? Andrew,
- 4:14speaking of the offensive line, talk to us about left
- 4:18guard without Dickerson.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Well, right now it's Brett Toath and that's not really
- 4:23a surprise. Whenever Landon's had to come out of the
- 4:26lineup this summer. It's been Brett Toath, who's entering his
- 4:29seventh season. And there is a misconception about Brett Toath,
- 4:33largely from what I've been able to glean, and he
- 4:37does a lot behind the scenes to really help the
- 4:41unit and help the team and bring the young players
- 4:44along and really establish that culture. A lot of folks
- 4:47may not even realize he came up through the ranks
- 4:50of being there with Jason Peters and Jason Kelsey and
- 4:54Brandon Brooks, Isaac Samalo, and he always talks about the
- 4:58standard and making sure that he's doing his part and
- 5:00making sure he's upholding that standard. And there's also something
- 5:03to be said for the staying power that he has
- 5:06and mastering really the technique from Jeff Stoutlin and being
- 5:10able to apply that on the field. He's a player
- 5:12that the team values, they trust, and I do believe
- 5:15that he's had some positive moments in this training camp.
- 5:18He can also play anywhere on the offensive line, and
- 5:21that those are players that they don't necessarily grow on trees.
- 5:24You want to find a way to keep them in
- 5:26house and maximize their value.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Andrew you just mentioned about, you know, maximizing toast value
- 5:34kind of let me in my next thought, which is,
- 5:36you know, there's obviously for people who are not at
- 5:39practice every day now watching this team as closely as
- 5:41you are, the gut reaction might be, well, why don't
- 5:45you just throw Matt Pryor over there? What about Trevor Keegan?
- 5:48You know, so what you think is the reasoning for
- 5:52why maybe those guys are not getting more shots at this.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Well, at least initially, it doesn't make it to a
- 6:00sense to uproot Tyler Stein, who's been spending all summer
- 6:03building that continuity alongside Lane Johnson and Cam Jurgens, and
- 6:07then moving him to the left. Now Tyler Steen can
- 6:09play on the left side, he's done that before. But
- 6:11Brett Toath has been working with Jordan my Lot in
- 6:14Cam Jurgens and establishing that chemistry. And also Brettoath knows
- 6:19exactly how Jess Doutland once it blocked up, He knows
- 6:22the technique. There is a lot of trust and confidence
- 6:24there despite what outside perception may be. And so I
- 6:29just think, rather than move two different players and disrupt
- 6:33the chemistry, I think it makes more sense to lean
- 6:36on a player who's been there, who who knows the system,
- 6:40knows the scheme, and knows that is very familiar with
- 6:43those with his teammates. And Matt Pryor is he is
- 6:48a right tackle, he's a right guard. I don't believe
- 6:50he's ever even played left guard. So I think the player,
- 6:54if you're going to look for an outside like a
- 6:56name internally that folks aren't talking about, would be Darien Kinnard.
- 7:00Darryn Canard has played right tackle. They've tried him at
- 7:03right guard in camp. He's done well there and they've
- 7:06now for the since the Dickerson injury, have been giving
- 7:09him second team work with that left guard. So it
- 7:12really does suggest that they like what they've seen from
- 7:14him and they're trying to see if he can handle
- 7:16multiple hats because a young player with some upside.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Speaking of guys with upside, let's talk about what's going
- 7:23on with the tight end position. We know the top
- 7:25two are Andrews so far, we know it's got her,
- 7:28we know it's kal Katara, but what are your observations
- 7:31about who might steal that third spot in the tight
- 7:34end depth chart?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Well, right now, and it's taken a while for a
- 7:39player to emerge, but I think that guy would be
- 7:41Kylon Granson, who the Eagles signed in free agency. He
- 7:45was drafted by the Colts. He's a unique type of
- 7:48tight end because he doesn't fit the prototype. And what
- 7:51I mean by that is he's more along the lines
- 7:53of an h back. He can he's lined up in
- 7:55the backfield before he's lined up out wide, and you know,
- 7:59he can just provide a lot of different you know,
- 8:01a lot of different qualities to the offense. And he
- 8:04also provides special teams upside. And I'm somebody who watches
- 8:09every detail in practice and I couldn't help but notice
- 8:12that he's been getting first, you know, first crack on
- 8:15the kickoff team and the kick return game. And that
- 8:19speaks to what Michael Clay and the Eagles believe that
- 8:22he can provide. And I think of all those tight ends, Harrison,
- 8:26Brian and EJ. Jenkins, he's flashed a little bit more
- 8:29as a receiver as well. But being third in the
- 8:31pecking order, you're not going to see the football and
- 8:33awful lot. I think it just lends itself to being
- 8:36able to do different things offensively. That kind of body type,
- 8:39that kind of skill set. I'm still not one hundred
- 8:42percent short the Eagles would even keep two tight ends.
- 8:44But if you're looking at a third one to emerge,
- 8:46I think Kylon Granson slowly being that guy.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Andrews flipping over to the defense into the Checko joining
- 8:52US Football on four powered by the Inside of the
- 8:54Birds podcasts, Inside the Birds dot Com for all of
- 8:57Andrews Eagles covered and of course at Andrew Checko on
- 9:00social media. Andrew Cornerback. You know how Eagle fans are.
- 9:04They've been losing their mind for days now about Ringo
- 9:07and Jackson. So talk to us about the state of
- 9:11the cornerbacks because they did trade for Jakoreiam Bennett last week.
- 9:14So what is your take on the latest with the
- 9:17number two cornerback position.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Well, right now, I think it's fair to say that
- 9:22they're still on shaky grounds and there hasn't been a
- 9:26player who's yet to step up and sees the job.
- 9:30So Kille Ringo had a tough showing on Wednesday, the
- 9:34first joint practice, gave up some catches and you know
- 9:38you didn't see the fundamentals on one particular reception. Jaquorian
- 9:43Bennett struggled yesterday as well. Now he's also still learning
- 9:46the defense. That was really only his second full practice
- 9:49with the Eagles, so the context is really important there.
- 9:53He's still getting up the speed. Today he got some
- 9:55first team reps and Adorri Jackson's solid. If I'm spectacular,
- 10:00I just think that there's something to be said for
- 10:02a player who's played in ninety seven games and you
- 10:04kind of know what you're getting. If you're the Eagles,
- 10:07you're hoping that Kivie Ringo, you know, continues to trend forward,
- 10:12and you've spent years developing him, and ideally you'd like
- 10:15him to be that starting corner. But I think the
- 10:18natural fallback plan would be Jacoreyan Bennett, who of course
- 10:21they traded for, and he's still getting up to speed,
- 10:25but really none of the three have really stepped up
- 10:29and seized this opportunity.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I talked to Eric at home earlier today on Nice
- 10:35Every three ESPN Andrew, and he talked about how much
- 10:37he liked Jacorey and Bennett coming out of college, and
- 10:40he thinks that, you know, as things are going, he
- 10:43thinks that Bennett might be the best option of the three.
- 10:47Do you think that's a bit of a premature estimatia.
- 10:50Do you think it might be trending in that direction.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I still think that's a little premature. You know, folks
- 10:58have to be careful with whenever you add a young
- 11:01a young player who started some games and it's the
- 11:05shiny new toy, for lack of a better term, there's
- 11:08the natural instinct to get natural inclination to be bullish
- 11:13on that player and view them as a savior of sorts.
- 11:16But Jaquorian Bennett, he's not going to be handed anything.
- 11:19He's going to have to go out there and earn
- 11:21the job, and he now is tasked with trying to
- 11:24get up to speed as quickly as possible. I mean
- 11:28he's mortal as well. He struggled the other day, like
- 11:31I mentioned, and all the players, all the three guys
- 11:35in the mix here, have all had their up and
- 11:37down periods. I think he does have some upside. I
- 11:39want to be clear about that. I liked him coming
- 11:41out of Maryland, but it's not a slam dunk, and
- 11:45he's not so far and ahead of these other players
- 11:48there that you think it would be a no brainer
- 11:51to insert him there as the starter.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Andrew, I want to stay in the secondary here for
- 11:56a minute, because there's also been a lot of conversations
- 11:58about the season, deposition, what they're going to do, what
- 12:02they're not going to do. You know, if if you
- 12:06had to put kind of like a bit of a
- 12:11I'm trying to like put it like in a way,
- 12:12I'm not going to put you on the spot. Okay,
- 12:14but if you were to sit there and say, look,
- 12:16I think that between Sidney Brown and Drew mccooba, who
- 12:21you think the Eagles want to win the job versus
- 12:25who do you think will win the job? Like, do
- 12:28you think there is that difference or do you think
- 12:30the Eagles are being open minded with this?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Okay, I'll try to unpack this as best I can.
- 12:37I think the Eagles would like for Drew mccouba to
- 12:39win the job. They draft him in the second round
- 12:41and he has some coverage ability, the versatility, the football
- 12:45intellect that to me suggests that he's a tailor made
- 12:48safety for Vic Vangio right. However, both players have their
- 12:51own skill sets. Like today, encompass what Sidney Brown is
- 12:55all about, a heat seeking missile. The Browns did a
- 12:59lot of running plays and he was attacking the interior,
- 13:02getting downhill he was in his natural element. Unfortunately for him,
- 13:06that's not I mean, you need to do more than
- 13:09just that. It's an all encompassing position in Vicvangio's system,
- 13:14and I could see him contributing situationally, just just I'm
- 13:18not quite sure how he's going to fit as a
- 13:20post player in this defense. But I think Drew mccooba
- 13:24and this we're going to see his first preseason action
- 13:27here on Saturday, he's going to have an opportunity. He's
- 13:29been getting some first team reps. It's largely been Sydney
- 13:32Brown and Red Blanket Ship. But I think after this game,
- 13:36and after you see some momentum starting to build, you
- 13:38might see Drew mccooba get some more first team reps
- 13:40and then you're able to the playing field is a
- 13:43little bit more level, and I think you have to
- 13:45give you the nod to the player who has a
- 13:48little bit more athleticism, can make plays on the football
- 13:51and be that rangy back end player that Vic Veangio
- 13:54tends to cover it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And then how does Cooper de Gene factor into all
- 13:58of this, Because we know the Eagles when they first
- 13:59drafted then the viewed him in some ways as a
- 14:02guy you could do a little bit of everything, right, Yeah,
- 14:05he can.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Do everything, and he was very physical today and it
- 14:09showed signs of maybe that, you know, that safety background
- 14:14perhaps in the future, but I really do think he's
- 14:17too valuable at nickel to consider moving him anywhere right now.
- 14:21The Eagles don't have a viable option behind him. I
- 14:24guess you could say mac McWilliams, but mac McWilliams the
- 14:26last three practices has been repping outside, so the Eagles
- 14:30are really tapping into his versatility there. And I mean
- 14:35Christian Parker has mentioned that, you know that's still that's
- 14:39still in play outside. They're still going to get him
- 14:41some reps. But the bottom line is in this training
- 14:44camp thus far, Cooper Degene has not taken one rep
- 14:47at outside corner. So I think that in a perfect scenario,
- 14:52the safety position gets solidified with Drew mccooba, maybe jacoryan
- 14:56Bennett or Keey Ringo starts to emerge here and they
- 15:00have that cornerback two situation figured out and Creuper Degen
- 15:03can kind of do what he does and thrive in
- 15:05that nickel role but also be a valuable chess piece
- 15:08that Vic Vango can deploy elsewhere if you have deficiencies
- 15:13in multiple areas that really limits their flexibility and how
- 15:17they're able to deploy them.
