- 0:04Speaker 1: We have reached the destination that is known as Friday
- 0:09Speaker 1: and the advent of the weekend. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Zone and where you can always listen to us
- 0:16Speaker 1: absolutely free of charge on the iHeartRadio app. My name
- 0:20Speaker 1: is Craig Way. Thank you very much for joining us.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I say it as I do every Friday. If today
- 0:26Speaker 1: is the traditional Friday work weekday for you and meaning
- 0:32Speaker 1: you've got a couple of days off, good on you,
- 0:34Speaker 1: Good for you. Hopefully you can enjoy the weekends to come.
- 0:37Speaker 1: For those of you in the middle of the week.
- 0:39Speaker 1: You did say this, Jay Carmon, our producer, that you
- 0:42Speaker 1: know some guys that Friday is merely the middle part
- 0:46Speaker 1: of their week. They're Wednesday through Sunday people. Is that
- 0:48Speaker 1: to deal?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yep, They've got Monday, Tuesday is their weekend.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Okay, all right, However it rolls for you on that.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I hope it goes well for you there. And for
- 0:55Speaker 1: those of you actually start the work week on Friday,
- 0:58Speaker 1: there are some of those off days or Wednesday and Thursday.
- 1:01Speaker 1: My brother and sister in law for many years were
- 1:06Speaker 1: those types of people. They worked in the in the
- 1:08Speaker 1: service industry, you might say. My sister in law was
- 1:12Speaker 1: a a delt Baccar ride in the high limit room
- 1:17Speaker 1: at the Venetian, where she encountered such people as Mike Ruyshewsky,
- 1:22Speaker 1: Dennis Rodman, Tiger Woods, Paris Hilton, who lost control of
- 1:32Speaker 1: her bladder there had had a fair amount to drink
- 1:35Speaker 1: there and lost control. But that's an entirely different story. Anyway,
- 1:39Speaker 1: their uh, their their. Their work week was Friday through
- 1:46Speaker 1: uh Tuesday, and then they were off on Wednesdays and Thursday.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So if if you fall into that category, hopefully we
- 1:52Speaker 1: can help you get your week off to a good start.
- 1:54Speaker 1: There's a lot of football to discuss on the program
- 1:56Speaker 1: today and some baseball to get to as well. Now,
- 2:01Speaker 1: on the football side of things, we are going to
- 2:06Speaker 1: hear from Loghorns, We're gonna hear from Cowboys, We're gonna
- 2:10Speaker 1: hear from Texans. So we're gonna we're going to hear
- 2:13Speaker 1: some of that coming up. We're going to continue our
- 2:16Speaker 1: SEC football previews here in just a few moments with
- 2:18Speaker 1: the Tennessee Volunteers, and we're giving away copies of Dave
- 2:22Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football magazine we have three more to give away.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Like we said, we've been giving away three copies of
- 2:29Speaker 1: the magazine each day, one per hour last week, this week,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and one more week next week, so we'll give you
- 2:37Speaker 1: the opportunity. Today's menu is two parts random and one
- 2:43Speaker 1: part trivia. In other words, we'll give away a copy
- 2:46Speaker 1: of the magazine this hour through a random We'll call
- 2:51Speaker 1: out the number, and you, you know, activate the talk
- 2:54Speaker 1: back feature on the iHeartRadio app and reach us that way.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And then whatever number we pull out a few hap
- 3:00Speaker 1: to be that number, then you're going to get a
- 3:02Speaker 1: copy of the magazine. Next hour will be a trivia question.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Shouldn't be too hard for you as well, so we've
- 3:06Speaker 1: got that. The key to that whole thing is to
- 3:09Speaker 1: make sure to download the iHeartRadio app on your smartphone,
- 3:13Speaker 1: be it an iPhone or an Android. Very simple, easy
- 3:18Speaker 1: to do, difficult or complicated, and it's free. And once
- 3:22Speaker 1: you download it, you search AM thirteen under the zone.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It'll pop straight up and when it does, you press
- 3:29Speaker 1: you'll see a red button with a white microphone on it.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And you press that red button, that's the talkback microphone. Now,
- 3:35Speaker 1: when we do it randomly on the giveaway. All you
- 3:38Speaker 1: have to do is say I want the magazine, and
- 3:40Speaker 1: your voice recording goes right into our system and then
- 3:43Speaker 1: we'll tell you in a little bit who's going to
- 3:46Speaker 1: be the one to get it. And when we do
- 3:48Speaker 1: the trivia, you just had to be the first one
- 3:50Speaker 1: with the correct response. We'll give away a magazine here
- 3:52Speaker 1: in a few minutes. Start off with some long run sound. Yesterday,
- 3:56Speaker 1: a lot of folks are very impressed. I count myself
- 3:58Speaker 1: among those with Raheem Biles, the transfer linebacker from Pittsburgh
- 4:04Speaker 1: and it is Raheem. I know you may have seen
- 4:06Speaker 1: it with an S in there and it is spelled
- 4:08Speaker 1: are a s h Eem like Rashim. But he said
- 4:13Speaker 1: the way he described it, he said that was a
- 4:16Speaker 1: mistake when he was born and that was what was
- 4:21Speaker 1: spelled out on the birth certificate. It's Raheem Biles and
- 4:25Speaker 1: has a foundation going to the Dream Foundation in Columbus,
- 4:28Speaker 1: Ohio where he grew up. That was very impressive to
- 4:31Speaker 1: hear about, and so a lot of other things as well.
- 4:34Speaker 1: But when it comes down to football for Raheem Biles,
- 4:37Speaker 1: he was asked how are the newcomers and he would
- 4:40Speaker 1: classify be classified as a newcomer because he came through
- 4:43Speaker 1: the transfer portal, But how are the newcomers coming together,
- 4:48Speaker 1: whether it be freshmen or those through the portal and
- 4:52Speaker 1: starting to build that all important communication.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I mean it's really just been like Sark, He's just
- 4:58Speaker 3: been like the culture. We was doing clutch Wednesdays in
- 5:01Speaker 3: the spring, so like that helped a lot. I feel
- 5:04Speaker 3: like I feel like we was all getting to know
- 5:05Speaker 3: each other, Like we were really opening up when we
- 5:07Speaker 3: had on different meetings. Every time you have a different
- 5:10Speaker 3: group or different people you with, so really just all
- 5:12Speaker 3: of us just opening up and just hanging out for
- 5:15Speaker 3: outside of football, Like just when we got done with work,
- 5:17Speaker 3: I was just chilling playing a game with each other,
- 5:20Speaker 3: like if you feel me, just doing a whole bunch
- 5:22Speaker 3: of different stuff, taking trips together.
- 5:23Speaker 4: In the spring time in the summertime.
- 5:26Speaker 3: That helped a lot, like just to grow a connection
- 5:28Speaker 3: and stuff with everybody on the team, just to make
- 5:29Speaker 3: it like very much easier just to communicate with this guy.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I know, this guy like just messed up this, but
- 5:34Speaker 3: let me go look this his head out. I know
- 5:35Speaker 3: he gonna get down for a little bit something like that.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Just it really helped with the communication on the field.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Just help us be a player let team for sure.
- 5:42Speaker 5: Okay.
- 5:42Speaker 1: One of the key things for incoming football players and
- 5:45Speaker 1: incoming student athletes and for that matter, incoming students at
- 5:50Speaker 1: the University of Texas is the art of parking. You
- 5:55Speaker 1: went through that as a student, did you not.
- 5:57Speaker 6: I escaped my time. I'm at UT with one parking ticket,
- 6:02Speaker 6: just one. I only had the car there when I
- 6:04Speaker 6: was an upperclassman, but just the one.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So your first two years you didn't even have to
- 6:08Speaker 1: have a vehicle, right, right, did you do?
- 6:11Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 6:12Speaker 5: I did?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Okay?
- 6:13Speaker 6: And but the junior year, I was joining some of
- 6:19Speaker 6: my Texas student television uh cohort to send off the
- 6:24Speaker 6: seniors at the Fountain and I parked like just past
- 6:27Speaker 6: the fountain down close by the Macomb School of Business.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Seventy five dollars ticket. I was there for like forty
- 6:32Speaker 2: five minutes.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, that'll happen. Ticket from one who has
- 6:36Speaker 1: had his a ticket or two. Okay, Cameron Parker had
- 6:41Speaker 1: had his car booted last year or year before during
- 6:44Speaker 1: basketball scene. That's an entirely.
- 6:46Speaker 8: Story on that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But anyway, UH football players had to learn this, so
- 6:50Speaker 1: Raheem Biles was as has he learned where to park
- 6:53Speaker 1: on campus?
- 6:54Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I ain't. I ain't learned about the tickets
- 6:56Speaker 4: no more.
- 6:56Speaker 9: We've been good.
- 6:57Speaker 4: I've been good with the tickets. I've been in a
- 6:59Speaker 4: man and girl.
- 7:00Speaker 5: I'm good now, Okay.
- 7:03Speaker 1: In addition to that, how would even describe his strengths
- 7:06Speaker 1: what I do well?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Like I said, I tried to be a three level player,
- 7:09Speaker 3: So like I feel like Muschchamp loved me and covered
- 7:12Speaker 3: because you know.
- 7:12Speaker 9: He obviously coach East coach DB's and stuff, so he.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Loved me and coverage my coach, like when I blitzed
- 7:17Speaker 3: and stuff. And then like I just been working working
- 7:19Speaker 3: a lot of passwords, like I went to this dude
- 7:22Speaker 3: named Dez Walker from Atlanta. He helped me with a
- 7:24Speaker 3: lot of pass rush over like the summertime, like when
- 7:26Speaker 3: we had downtime and stuff. So like I've just been
- 7:29Speaker 3: I don't know. My strengths has probably just been relentless.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Real for being relentless and men, like I say, a
- 7:34Speaker 3: three level player like be able to do everything on
- 7:37Speaker 3: the field and that's just like you play linebackers. You
- 7:39Speaker 3: got to like especially with his new day and A's
- 7:41Speaker 3: like my goal is just like to reset the market
- 7:44Speaker 3: field for for linebackers, like I'm trying to. I'm trying
- 7:46Speaker 3: to show everybody can cover, I can blitch, I can
- 7:48Speaker 3: rush like play linebacker, obviously, fit the run and stuff,
- 7:51Speaker 3: get off the boxers like that type of player I'm
- 7:53Speaker 3: trying to be.
- 7:54Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, well there's another thing. And then one
- 7:58Speaker 1: other things he was asked about is because of this
- 8:00Speaker 1: battle going on at the running back spot, what's his
- 8:02Speaker 1: take of that so far?
- 8:04Speaker 4: I'm gonna start with Hollywood. Hollywood is more like A.
- 8:09Speaker 4: He's more like A I would say, just like A.
- 8:12Speaker 3: If he gets the ball and he sees a whole,
- 8:15Speaker 3: he's hitting like his vision is great, like he got
- 8:18Speaker 3: great vision.
- 8:19Speaker 4: He got great speed, long speed like and he.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Can make you miss too, obviously, and he could catch
- 8:24Speaker 3: the ball and stuff, and he like very technical sound
- 8:28Speaker 3: with releaek.
- 8:29Speaker 4: That boy, he just man. He twitchy, like you got
- 8:32Speaker 4: to be on your p's and q's.
- 8:33Speaker 3: If you're trying to tackle him, because if not, he's
- 8:35Speaker 3: gonna make you miss every time.
- 8:37Speaker 4: He's explosive fast, and like I said, he twitches.
- 8:39Speaker 3: So his routes is very crispy and like everything I
- 8:43Speaker 3: feel like the Coop he's just like an all around
- 8:47Speaker 3: back like he got like he got the he got
- 8:50Speaker 3: the size, he got the speed, and he's just the
- 8:53Speaker 3: way he's been coming along has been like great, Like
- 8:55Speaker 3: you could really see the approvement. Like and I sit
- 8:57Speaker 3: right next to him in the locker, so he always
- 8:58Speaker 3: asking me like different.
- 8:59Speaker 9: Questions like what's up with this? Like why you fit
- 9:02Speaker 9: this way?
- 9:02Speaker 3: And then and it's like he's been really working on
- 9:04Speaker 3: his past blocking too. You could see, like we did
- 9:07Speaker 3: one on ones a day while he really like you
- 9:09Speaker 3: can see like the improvement he makes, like he always
- 9:11Speaker 3: trying to go with the older guys, like so he
- 9:13Speaker 3: can really get some real game time reps.
- 9:15Speaker 9: And I appreciate that from him because he's trying to
- 9:16Speaker 9: get work.
- 9:17Speaker 4: We're all trying to get better.
- 9:18Speaker 3: So like, yeah, Hollywood, he's like a like a striker,
- 9:22Speaker 3: like you better get hands on even quicker.
- 9:24Speaker 9: He's gone league.
- 9:26Speaker 4: He real twitchy receiver, like real twitchy.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And then the Coop he's just like a all around
- 9:31Speaker 3: type of back, like he can he could do everything
- 9:34Speaker 3: for real.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Okay twitchy, that's a key word to keep in mind there.
- 9:38Speaker 1: All right, U up next we're going to continue our
- 9:42Speaker 1: SEC football previews. We'll take a look at the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 9:45Speaker 1: That's next when we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 9:48Speaker 1: under the zone of the radio app Why the time,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I think it is written down somewhere that it's I'll
- 10:00Speaker 1: be written down somewhere that it's at the very least
- 10:04Speaker 1: an implied order, if not a direct order. Whenever a
- 10:08Speaker 1: broadcaster has a play by play voice of another college on,
- 10:13Speaker 1: they're supposed to either jump back with their fight song
- 10:15Speaker 1: or something like that. Happens to me every time I'm
- 10:17Speaker 1: on with Toby rolling Oklahoma, they come back with Texas
- 10:21Speaker 1: Fight or the Eyes of Texas. So the producer Jake
- 10:24Speaker 1: Herman thought it proved it. So as we continue our
- 10:27Speaker 1: SEC football previews, it brings us to the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 10:32Speaker 1: And that's Mike Keith, their play by play voice, who
- 10:35Speaker 1: joins us now. Mike, I really appreciate the time. How
- 10:37Speaker 1: are you this afternoon.
- 10:39Speaker 5: I'm doing very well, Craig, thank you so much for
- 10:42Speaker 5: having the interesting note. However, Rocky Top is not Tennessee's
- 10:47Speaker 5: fight song, well, or not even one of their fight songs.
- 10:50Speaker 5: There is strong discussion that after fifty years have been
- 10:54Speaker 5: playing as if there were the fight song, that it
- 10:58Speaker 5: should become an official fight song, but it is not,
- 11:01Speaker 5: which is quite a quite a strange thing in the
- 11:05Speaker 5: eyes of many even here.
- 11:08Speaker 1: You know what, I remember hearing that when it went
- 11:10Speaker 1: when I went up there to do I think a
- 11:12Speaker 1: women's basketball game several years ago, or it was a
- 11:14Speaker 1: men's either one that they said, well, you know, because
- 11:17Speaker 1: I made a comment about boy, they you know, they
- 11:19Speaker 1: play Rocky Top probably as often as Texas Fight gets
- 11:22Speaker 1: played to Texas or Boomer Sooner or some of the others.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And somebody said, well, you know, it's not a real
- 11:26Speaker 1: fight song, and I'd forgotten about that. And you're a
- 11:29Speaker 1: Tennessee grad, aren't you. Oh yeah, that's what I thought.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Well, you know, many folks for many years
- 11:36Speaker 1: were so or so used to hearing you do such
- 11:38Speaker 1: a fabulous job calling the Tennessee Titans. And what you
- 11:42Speaker 1: and I met a couple of years ago, I guess,
- 11:43Speaker 1: was that your first year back after Bob Kesling's retirement.
- 11:47Speaker 1: That is this your third year or more in uh
- 11:51Speaker 1: in reassuming all the play by play duties there for
- 11:54Speaker 1: volunteer football and men's basketball.
- 11:57Speaker 5: It's your two for me, and I've been here for
- 12:02Speaker 5: quite some time. I came immediately after the Titans season
- 12:06Speaker 5: ended in twenty twenty four, so I was here in
- 12:09Speaker 5: early January twenty twenty five. I've been here for going
- 12:13Speaker 5: on two years, but this is only my second school
- 12:17Speaker 5: year to be the announcer.
- 12:18Speaker 1: How much of an adjustment was it for you?
- 12:21Speaker 5: With all those years?
- 12:22Speaker 1: And what I always call was the you know, the
- 12:25Speaker 1: very set in stone and regimented routine of NFL teams,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and for that matter, I guess broadcasts to jump in
- 12:35Speaker 1: back into the college scene where there's football, owner's a
- 12:38Speaker 1: basketball game here, and then there's some overlap and then
- 12:40Speaker 1: there's another basketball game on down the road. How much
- 12:42Speaker 1: of an adjustment was that for you?
- 12:45Speaker 10: Massive adjustment, massive, massive adjustment, just understanding that, you know,
- 12:52Speaker 10: the two seasons overlap. The thing about working for the
- 12:57Speaker 10: Titans was unless I did a sort of a one
- 13:01Speaker 10: off event somewhere, like.
- 13:02Speaker 7: If I did a high.
- 13:04Speaker 5: School state championship where the Titans sent me out to
- 13:07Speaker 5: do some event of some sort, it was gonna be
- 13:11Speaker 5: the same. You know, it was gonna be You're gonna
- 13:14Speaker 5: play Indianapolis on Sunday at noon Central time. And you know,
- 13:18Speaker 5: it's just one thing, and I knew this would be harder,
- 13:22Speaker 5: but you know, I think at this point in my life,
- 13:25Speaker 5: I wanted to see if I.
- 13:27Speaker 7: Could do it.
- 13:27Speaker 5: I had not called basketball on the radio in thirty
- 13:31Speaker 5: three years, and I'd done TV games, but I had
- 13:36Speaker 5: not done it on the radio in thirty three years,
- 13:39Speaker 5: and I wanted to try it. You know, I wanted
- 13:41Speaker 5: to see, you know, I wanted to see what it
- 13:43Speaker 5: was like. I wanted to be part of the Southeastern Conference.
- 13:46Speaker 5: The fact that Texas and Oklahoma were coming in appeal.
- 13:50Speaker 7: To me greatly.
- 13:52Speaker 5: The fact that it's it's a play that football is
- 13:55Speaker 5: a playoff sport like the NFL appeal to me greatly.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Sort of the new wave of it, which seems very
- 14:03Speaker 5: much like the NFL when I got into it in
- 14:06Speaker 5: nineteen ninety eight. It has a familiar feeling because when
- 14:11Speaker 5: I started Craig in the National Football League, it was
- 14:14Speaker 5: only the fourth year of free agency in the salarycap, true,
- 14:17Speaker 5: and everybody, everybody was still I mean, they didn't call
- 14:21Speaker 5: it the Wild West like they do with what we're
- 14:24Speaker 5: getting right now, but everybody was still trying to bend
- 14:27Speaker 5: the rules. They were trying to find the different ways
- 14:32Speaker 5: to get into it. Make no mistake about it, though.
- 14:34Speaker 5: I mean, I was very honored and very happy to
- 14:38Speaker 5: work for the Tennessee Titans. The Adams family was wonderful
- 14:42Speaker 5: to my family, and it was the honor of a
- 14:45Speaker 5: lifetime to be with them. And now to have this
- 14:49Speaker 5: opportunity as another great honor as well well.
- 14:52Speaker 1: And just a side note, you get to work with
- 14:54Speaker 1: one of my favorite people on planet Earth, and that's
- 14:57Speaker 1: Rick Barnes. I spent sixteen years with him, so it's
- 15:01Speaker 1: and he's always kind enough to do a pregame interview
- 15:04Speaker 1: with me every year of the Texas and Tennessee. He's
- 15:06Speaker 1: a different sword, isn't.
- 15:07Speaker 7: He the best?
- 15:09Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 15:10Speaker 7: He was my He was my very favorite part of
- 15:12Speaker 7: year one.
- 15:14Speaker 5: To get to basically in bed with them, which is
- 15:19Speaker 5: what you know. I told him I started going to
- 15:21Speaker 5: basketball practice last summer and he's like, why are you here? Like, well,
- 15:26Speaker 5: this is this is kind of what I do. I
- 15:29Speaker 5: want to I want to watch it, I want to
- 15:31Speaker 5: learn it, and I'm listen, I couldn't tell you what
- 15:35Speaker 5: a football or a basketball play is, per se. I mean,
- 15:39Speaker 5: you know, if somebody kidnapped me and asked me to
- 15:41Speaker 5: diagram the plays of Tennessee to give him an advantage.
- 15:44Speaker 5: They would they would be very disappointed in me as
- 15:47Speaker 5: a hostage, because I mean, I don't know now. I played,
- 15:52Speaker 5: so I sort of know what the deal is. But
- 15:54Speaker 5: what I'm watching for is who were who are the
- 15:57Speaker 5: players in the lineup?
- 15:59Speaker 7: What are they focused on?
- 16:01Speaker 5: Just kind of understanding the overall philosophy and Coach Barnes
- 16:07Speaker 5: is amazing And what's really amazing to me, and what
- 16:13Speaker 5: is quite a thrill is he has totally embraced transfer
- 16:17Speaker 5: Portland and il the majority of his peers have retired.
- 16:24Speaker 5: They said, don't want any of this. He's just said, fine,
- 16:27Speaker 5: I don't have to go sit in the gym for
- 16:29Speaker 5: eight weeks all summer recruiting all high school kids. And
- 16:34Speaker 5: Tennessee funds basketball very well. You know Adolph upset about
- 16:38Speaker 5: Tennessee back in the nineteen fifties. He said, Tennessee is
- 16:42Speaker 5: a football school that takes its basketball very seriously. And
- 16:47Speaker 5: I think that's what Rick Barnes has found. He's found
- 16:50Speaker 5: a place that while it's known as a football school,
- 16:54Speaker 5: they very much loved their basketball and Here's the thing too, Craig.
- 16:58Speaker 5: They love him.
- 17:00Speaker 7: I love Rick bart.
- 17:01Speaker 5: He is beloved in this community and he can do
- 17:05Speaker 5: no wrong in terms of what he does as a person.
- 17:09Speaker 5: And being around both he and his staff and his players,
- 17:13Speaker 5: you know, he's got.
- 17:14Speaker 7: A certain standard.
- 17:15Speaker 5: As you know, not everybody can play for Rick Barnes. True,
- 17:18Speaker 5: and and to see these guys and to get to
- 17:22Speaker 5: know these guys, it was the highlight of year one
- 17:27Speaker 5: for me because I learned so much, no doubt, it's
- 17:30Speaker 5: really special.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Mike Keith is the play by Playboys of the Tennessee Volunteers,
- 17:34Speaker 1: joining us for SEC preview. Okay, let's talk about your
- 17:36Speaker 1: football team. And one thing I always remember about Josh Hipel,
- 17:41Speaker 1: other than the fact that he led Oklahoma to a
- 17:42Speaker 1: sixty three to fourteen win over Texas in two thousand
- 17:46Speaker 1: en route to winning the national title, was the was
- 17:50Speaker 1: the fact that he's looked at as being a real
- 17:52Speaker 1: offensive savan and offensive genius. And I would I would
- 17:55Speaker 1: submit that probably, And I don't know how coach Hypel
- 17:58Speaker 1: feels about this. Probably the greatest challenge for a real
- 18:04Speaker 1: offensive mind like coach Hypel is when he has to
- 18:08Speaker 1: break in another quarterback and now with the latest in
- 18:15Speaker 1: the quarterback derby being either the freshman Faison Brandon or
- 18:19Speaker 1: George McIntyre I guess, or the two that are looked
- 18:21Speaker 1: at most prominently. I'm sure he rolls up his sleeves
- 18:24Speaker 1: and dives right into it. But what's the vibe you
- 18:27Speaker 1: get on what he does with his offense and how
- 18:31Speaker 1: whoever is going to take the snaps at quarterback is
- 18:34Speaker 1: going to factor into this.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Well, what Hypeul likes to tell you, which is so great,
- 18:40Speaker 5: his dad was a longtime coach, longtime football coach. His
- 18:45Speaker 5: dad's background is in defense, So a lot of the
- 18:50Speaker 5: things that he incorporates for his quarterback and for his
- 18:53Speaker 5: offense comes from understanding what a defense is bothered by
- 18:58Speaker 5: the most. His father is actually around and keeps an
- 19:04Speaker 5: eye on some things for him a little bit too,
- 19:06Speaker 5: which is really an interesting dynamic. But Josh has buried
- 19:12Speaker 5: so many things in his time at Tennessee. He came
- 19:16Speaker 5: in and his offense looked one way, and he's put
- 19:20Speaker 5: in more routes. He's expanded the route tree, he's expanded
- 19:24Speaker 5: the run game. He'll go under center. There's more motion now.
- 19:29Speaker 5: I think the flexibility in him is what is most impressive.
- 19:33Speaker 5: And so whether it's Brandon or MacIntyre or both, I mean,
- 19:38Speaker 5: you know, we could certainly see that he'll announce a
- 19:41Speaker 5: starter at some point, but the starter he's gonna announce
- 19:44Speaker 5: is for the Furman game. It doesn't mean he's making
- 19:48Speaker 5: an announcement for the end of time, you know, right.
- 19:51Speaker 5: But both of these guys can play. They've got some
- 19:55Speaker 5: experienced offensive linemen and skill players around them, but he's
- 19:59Speaker 5: not gonna baby them, Craig. He's gonna expect them to
- 20:03Speaker 5: be able to go out and execute the offense. Now,
- 20:06Speaker 5: can he run everything that he ran with twenty five
- 20:09Speaker 5: year old Joey Aguilar? Maybe maybe not, but it's still
- 20:14Speaker 5: going to be his offense. I think the difference in
- 20:18Speaker 5: his offense this year and the overall difference to his
- 20:20Speaker 5: football team is they're going to be much more physical.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Tennessee felt like they got out physical down the stretch
- 20:28Speaker 5: a year ago, and Josh Haipel was not pleased with
- 20:32Speaker 5: any bit of that at all.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Interesting you mentioned that he's got some good pieces of
- 20:38Speaker 1: the court. Whoever is going to be the quarterback or
- 20:40Speaker 1: both have good offensive pieces around them at the skills spot.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Who do you think is really the standout. Might it
- 20:47Speaker 1: be a Braylyn Staley. Might it be you know, Mike Matthews.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Might it be Deshaun Bishop who really stands out to
- 20:54Speaker 1: you as the guy who, in addition to the quarterback play,
- 20:58Speaker 1: has to kind of be a bit of a bell
- 21:00Speaker 1: on the offensive side of the ball.
- 21:02Speaker 5: I think the two receivers you mentioned first, Staley and
- 21:05Speaker 5: Matthews have to be at the top of the list.
- 21:08Speaker 5: That's the best returning pair of receivers in terms of
- 21:13Speaker 5: productivity that Tennessee has.
- 21:15Speaker 7: Had in fifteen years.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Wow.
- 21:17Speaker 5: And so with that being the case, you know, those
- 21:20Speaker 5: guys have to come through. They played really well last year,
- 21:23Speaker 5: they put up good numbers, but they've got to be
- 21:26Speaker 5: guys that they can go to Ethan Davis at tight end,
- 21:30Speaker 5: Deshaun Braeme at tight end. They've got to find a
- 21:33Speaker 5: third wide receiver. Bishop, the running back, has a chance,
- 21:38Speaker 5: with a great year, to be Tennessee's all time leading rusher. Wow.
- 21:42Speaker 5: And I mean I think they're going to feature him.
- 21:45Speaker 5: But Tennessee likes to play three backs, and Javen Gordon
- 21:49Speaker 5: is a transfer from two Lanes playoff team, has done
- 21:53Speaker 5: well in camp and then Dwayn Morris is a sophomore
- 21:57Speaker 5: running back who has tremendous speed. So all those guys
- 22:00Speaker 5: are going to be counted on. They're going to have
- 22:03Speaker 5: to come through this year if Tennessee is going to
- 22:06Speaker 5: take a step back to being a playoff contender.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Talking Tennessee Volunteers Football in our sec pviews with all
- 22:12Speaker 1: of the play by play voices we do every day
- 22:16Speaker 1: here during this three week span, and today it's Mike Keith,
- 22:18Speaker 1: the voice of the Balls, who joins us now on
- 22:21Speaker 1: the defensive side. The layman might look at it, Mike
- 22:24Speaker 1: and say, hey, linebackers and secondary look better, look really
- 22:27Speaker 1: really good. If there's a question mark, maybe it's in
- 22:29Speaker 1: the down lineman. Do you see it similarly, or there's
- 22:32Speaker 1: some other things that come to your mind about the
- 22:34Speaker 1: Tennessee defense.
- 22:36Speaker 5: I think the down linemen are going to be fine.
- 22:40Speaker 5: They just I mean two years ago, you know they
- 22:42Speaker 5: I don't know if you know this.
- 22:43Speaker 7: I shouldn't say it that way. I apologize.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Two years ago they played sixteen down lineman. They rotated
- 22:49Speaker 5: sixteen defensive lineman, which is crazy. And five of the
- 22:56Speaker 5: players that they lost off last year's team are in
- 22:59Speaker 5: NFL camp so they have lost depth and talent. But
- 23:04Speaker 5: they have talent. Now the question becomes do they have depth.
- 23:09Speaker 7: Up front?
- 23:10Speaker 5: They brought in Xavier Gellim from Penn State, Jordan Norman
- 23:15Speaker 5: from Tulane to combine with Nathan Richardson and David Hobbs
- 23:20Speaker 5: and you know some other guys that were already here.
- 23:23Speaker 5: So I think they're I think they're okay there. They
- 23:25Speaker 5: have a lot of linebackers. They absolutely have a lot
- 23:29Speaker 5: of linebackers that the LEO position. That edge rusher, We're
- 23:34Speaker 5: not sure who that is. And if they can't find
- 23:37Speaker 5: that consistent player, do they use some sort of hybrid?
- 23:42Speaker 5: Do they use extra linebackers, do they play an extra
- 23:44Speaker 5: defensive back? I think they're probably like everybody else, every
- 23:50Speaker 5: football team from you know wherever junior high school to
- 23:56Speaker 5: the best team in the NFL. They don't have enough corners.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Every coach in America is going to tell you he
- 24:02Speaker 5: doesn't have enough corners. And Tennessee, Tennessee is really fighting
- 24:07Speaker 5: to find corner depth, just like everybody else. But again,
- 24:12Speaker 5: I didn't have one year in the NFL where the
- 24:14Speaker 5: coach said, oh, we got plenty of corners. It's great, you.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Know embarrassment of Riches doesn't exactly.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Oh yeah, i'd like to I'd like to see I
- 24:24Speaker 5: would like I'd like to meet that grass cutter coach
- 24:27Speaker 5: who would be willing to tell you he has enough corners.
- 24:30Speaker 5: But you get it, I mean, you get it. With
- 24:33Speaker 5: all the receiver stuff that people do you need them?
- 24:37Speaker 5: You know who's going to play the nickel? And do
- 24:40Speaker 5: you play a safety at nickel or do you play
- 24:42Speaker 5: a corner at nickel or do you have a player
- 24:45Speaker 5: who just basically a nickel. You know, we've seen that.
- 24:49Speaker 5: You know, the Tyron Matthews of the world come around
- 24:52Speaker 5: some too, so we'll see. Listen, Jim Knowles, the defensive coordinator,
- 24:59Speaker 5: is a heck of a defen defensive coach. He'll cook
- 25:01Speaker 5: something up. The biggest change in Tennessee was hiring Indiana
- 25:05Speaker 5: strength coach Derek Owings and the Ball's commitment to getting
- 25:11Speaker 5: back to physicality. They put they got pushed around down
- 25:16Speaker 5: the stretch and Josh Haipel after the Vanderbilt game, in
- 25:20Speaker 5: which the Commodore has won in Knoxville by twenty one points,
- 25:24Speaker 5: dominating the second half, his quote is I'm embarrassed, and
- 25:28Speaker 5: so he went out and got somebody and you know,
- 25:31Speaker 5: the best strength coach in the country. If you look
- 25:33Speaker 5: at what Indiana was last year, certainly the hottest strength
- 25:38Speaker 5: coach in the country because of what Indiana did. You know,
- 25:40Speaker 5: That's that's what he wanted and that's what he got.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and Texas fans very well acquainted with Jim Knowles
- 25:48Speaker 1: from his time first at Oklahoma State, then last year
- 25:50Speaker 1: obviously at Ohio State. Mike, before I let you go,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I want to ask you something I've asked all of
- 25:56Speaker 1: the other play by play guys who've been on and
- 25:57Speaker 1: the ones that'll be on next week during our week
- 26:00Speaker 1: of these previews, and that's about the whole nine game
- 26:03Speaker 1: conference schedule thing. That and some of the guys who've
- 26:07Speaker 1: been around calling it for a long time might have
- 26:09Speaker 1: a better perspective than you or I in terms of
- 26:12Speaker 1: the weekly grind of the SEC.
- 26:14Speaker 5: But I think we've both seen it.
- 26:16Speaker 1: You know, we saw it last year what the regular
- 26:19Speaker 1: grind is of an eight game schedule with a nine
- 26:21Speaker 1: game conference schedule. There are those who really have some
- 26:24Speaker 1: trepidation about it. Now your non conference schedule and it's
- 26:28Speaker 1: a good challenge to go to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech.
- 26:31Speaker 1: But the non conference schedule would seem to set up
- 26:34Speaker 1: well enough to where you get three games under belt
- 26:37Speaker 1: anyway before the Logorns roll In has tried the river
- 26:41Speaker 1: there on September twenty six. How about your thoughts on
- 26:44Speaker 1: the nine game conference schedule.
- 26:48Speaker 5: Well, I think it's the NFL. Yeah, I mean, I
- 26:50Speaker 5: think that's one hundred percent what it is. I've seen it.
- 26:54Speaker 5: And what I mean by that is you're gonna I mean,
- 26:58Speaker 5: let's say you go play LSU and you go play
- 27:02Speaker 5: Oh Miss, and you beat them both, great, right, but
- 27:07Speaker 5: you're so beat up? Can will you have a chance
- 27:10Speaker 5: to beat Florida the next week? And that sounds crazy?
- 27:14Speaker 5: You're like, well, LSU's gonna be good, No Miss is
- 27:16Speaker 5: gonna be good, and Florida's gonna be much approved. And yeah,
- 27:19Speaker 5: guess what, everybody's got it now.
- 27:22Speaker 7: And I think that's.
- 27:23Speaker 5: Gonna be what the nine game grind is overall is
- 27:28Speaker 5: it's going to wear on you as a way, in
- 27:31Speaker 5: a way like professional football that Hey listen, when I
- 27:35Speaker 5: started following the SEC six games and when they went
- 27:39Speaker 5: to seven, they said, oh the world's ending, We're going
- 27:42Speaker 5: to seven. And then you go to eight it's like
- 27:45Speaker 5: age too many, we shouldn't And the coaches didn't want nine,
- 27:49Speaker 5: and I one hundred percent geft why they didn't want nine,
- 27:54Speaker 5: Because this conference and the challenge that it puts you through,
- 27:59Speaker 5: especially with just one by week this year, the grind
- 28:02Speaker 5: that it puts you through, it's gonna be very, very
- 28:04Speaker 5: tough now for us as broadcasters. It's fabulous. For fans,
- 28:09Speaker 5: it's fantastic. If you if you have enough to get
- 28:13Speaker 5: in the playoff, you're gonna be ready for anybody.
- 28:16Speaker 7: You know, I think you know.
- 28:18Speaker 5: If you're Tennessee, your goal to start with is to
- 28:23Speaker 5: get to the LSU game at home on November twenty first,
- 28:27Speaker 5: still in the hunt for the playoffs, and if you can,
- 28:31Speaker 5: if you can make it that far, that the Georgia
- 28:34Speaker 5: Tech thing is going to be a big deal, a
- 28:37Speaker 5: much bigger deal for Tennessee than probably what it looks
- 28:40Speaker 5: like on paper because they play Colorado to open and
- 28:45Speaker 5: so they will have already seen a quality opponent to
- 28:50Speaker 5: begin and they play them on a Thursday night, and
- 28:53Speaker 5: then Tennessee goes in there, and you know, this is
- 28:56Speaker 5: a real new Georgia Tech team, kind of a new
- 28:58Speaker 5: Tennessee team. They've got to find a way to win
- 29:02Speaker 5: that football game. There's a lot of pressure in that
- 29:05Speaker 5: football game. And then Kennesaw State. That's a team that
- 29:08Speaker 5: won their conference last year. And Tennessee fans here Kennesaw
- 29:13Speaker 5: State and they think back to Georgia State in twenty
- 29:16Speaker 5: nineteen when they came into Knoxville and beat Tennessee.
- 29:20Speaker 8: So, you know, I mean you some of those.
- 29:23Speaker 5: Teams are you know, they're a lot more sort of
- 29:28Speaker 5: catchy than they were when Peyton Manning was here and
- 29:31Speaker 5: I was covering the team in the nineties. Tennessee would
- 29:34Speaker 5: start the season, Craig with eight wins. You knew they
- 29:36Speaker 5: had eight wins. It was going to be Georgia, Florida
- 29:39Speaker 5: and Alabama would be the other three games, and then
- 29:42Speaker 5: that would decide what kind of season you had. Today,
- 29:46Speaker 5: I think you start off with one, maybe two automatic wins. O.
- 29:51Speaker 5: There's some you you certainly think you can win. But
- 29:54Speaker 5: Tennessee knew they were winning eight games in that period.
- 29:58Speaker 5: They knew it, and today it's just not like that anymore.
- 30:03Speaker 1: You're right, it is something else. Uh, Mike Agent, tell
- 30:07Speaker 1: how much I am looking forward to calling a football
- 30:11Speaker 1: game for the first time. For me at Neiland Stadium.
- 30:13Speaker 1: I you know, I've obviously seen it on television and
- 30:16Speaker 1: heard everybody describing it. I'm I'm I'm looking forward to
- 30:20Speaker 1: UH to being in Knoxville there coming up to start
- 30:22Speaker 1: off SEC play. I appreciate you doing this and and
- 30:26Speaker 1: I would love to visit with you again game week
- 30:28Speaker 1: if that works for you.
- 30:31Speaker 5: Just saying Texas. UH had a chance to work with
- 30:34Speaker 5: coach Sarkisi and some when he was at Washington.
- 30:38Speaker 7: And a big fan of his.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Obviously, this is an historic matchup for both programs. And
- 30:45Speaker 5: you know, Greig, if you love college football like I
- 30:48Speaker 5: know you do, this is what you live for. You know,
- 30:52Speaker 5: you you live for moments like this where you're going
- 30:54Speaker 5: to get to see a first on campus meeting between
- 30:58Speaker 5: these programs, and that Saturday is going to be unreal
- 31:03Speaker 5: in Knoxville, Tennessee.
- 31:04Speaker 7: I can't wait for.
- 31:05Speaker 1: It me either. Hey, Mike, thanks so much. I appreciate
- 31:07Speaker 1: you doing this. I'll look forward to visiting with you
- 31:09Speaker 1: the week of the ball game and look forward to
- 31:10Speaker 1: seeing you in Knoxville at the end of September.
- 31:13Speaker 7: Thank you for having me on the program. I appreciate it.
- 31:15Speaker 5: You bet.
- 31:16Speaker 1: That's Mike Key, play by play voice of the Tennessee
- 31:19Speaker 1: Volunteers Market on your calendar September twenty sixth, when the
- 31:23Speaker 1: Logorrens and Tennessee likewise open SEC play against one of
- 31:28Speaker 1: both of these teams. By the way, Texas and Tennessee
- 31:31Speaker 1: played their three non conference games up front, and that
- 31:34Speaker 1: was the point I was driving home with Mike. At
- 31:36Speaker 1: least you get those non conference games, you know, underfoot,
- 31:39Speaker 1: whereas some programs like Kentucky has to play Louisville and
- 31:43Speaker 1: Georgie has to play Georgia Tech. We've talked about some
- 31:47Speaker 1: of those, got Florida, Florida State. Those teams that have
- 31:50Speaker 1: a third non conference game at the tail end of
- 31:54Speaker 1: the regular season only get a couple of weeks to
- 31:56Speaker 1: ramp it up and getting it South Carolina playing Clemson
- 31:59Speaker 1: at the end, that's another example of that. So Texas
- 32:02Speaker 1: and Tennessee both will have played their non conference slate
- 32:05Speaker 1: when they teed up to open SEC play on September
- 32:09Speaker 1: twenty sixth at Eland Stadium in Knoxville. All right, coming up,
- 32:13Speaker 1: it is inconceivable on a Friday. We know what inconceivable
- 32:18Speaker 1: on a Friday means, Jacob.
- 32:19Speaker 6: Down to the Sunshine State, the most flacset of the
- 32:21Speaker 6: lower forty eight for Florida Man and Florida Woman, which
- 32:24Speaker 6: you've had a lot of good Florida woman stories lately.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, stay tuned for that. We got more coming up
- 32:28Speaker 1: here on thirteen under the Zone, second hour of the program,
- 32:41Speaker 1: right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred. So I'm
- 32:43Speaker 1: glad to have you with us on a fire me
- 32:49Speaker 1: up Friday. We're fired up for the weekend as well.
- 32:53Speaker 1: I know a lot of folks are really fired up
- 32:55Speaker 1: for the start of the NFL season. The full fledged
- 33:01Speaker 1: start of the preseason began last night. Coming up here
- 33:06Speaker 1: a little bit later on this hour, we're gonna hear
- 33:08Speaker 1: more from the Loghorns. We heard in the first hour
- 33:13Speaker 1: of the program from Raheem Biles, We're gonna hear in
- 33:16Speaker 1: this second hour from a couple of different Longhorn guys.
- 33:21Speaker 1: And in addition to that, we'll also have a look
- 33:28Speaker 1: at some of the other things that are going on
- 33:31Speaker 1: this weekend in the NFL now speaking, and by the way,
- 33:36Speaker 1: we'll give away another copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football
- 33:38Speaker 1: Magazine this hour. This hour, we're gonna do it with
- 33:43Speaker 1: a trivia question, and later on this hour and in
- 33:45Speaker 1: the four o'clock hour, we will go back to the
- 33:50Speaker 1: random entry method of giving away a copy of the magazine.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Also in the four o'clock hour, Geene Watson, our good
- 33:57Speaker 1: friend MLB insider, was at the Field of Dreams game
- 34:02Speaker 1: last night, which was really cool if you got to
- 34:04Speaker 1: see any of it. There in the cornfield, they've built
- 34:06Speaker 1: kind of a new ballpark that backs right into the cornfield,
- 34:09Speaker 1: and so I think this thing is here to stay
- 34:11Speaker 1: now because they've made the ballpark larger. It's like double
- 34:15Speaker 1: a size, that kind of thing. Gene actually walked through
- 34:18Speaker 1: the cornfield, so we'll ask him if he saw any
- 34:24Speaker 1: ghost or if he heard He's his Bane or something
- 34:28Speaker 1: like that in the cornfield. If you build it, they
- 34:32Speaker 1: will come, that kind of thing anyway, he joins us.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Also in the four o'clock hour, let's jump to the
- 34:38Speaker 1: NFL Cowboys getting ready for their first preseason game, traveling
- 34:43Speaker 1: to Seattle today. They played tomorrow night against the Seahawks.
- 34:48Speaker 1: We know who the starting quarterback is for the Cowboys.
- 34:51Speaker 1: It's Dak Prescott. But Dak probably won't play or if
- 34:55Speaker 1: he does very little tomorrow, so it's going to be
- 34:57Speaker 1: a duel with the backup quarterbacks, and Brian Shottam has
- 35:01Speaker 1: to assess the situation of his backup quarterback right now.
- 35:05Speaker 4: For us defensively, you have to be able to say
- 35:06Speaker 4: that he is.
- 35:07Speaker 11: And I think it's been a very highly competitive contest.
- 35:17Speaker 11: I think, you know, Joe's you know, talent and ability
- 35:20Speaker 11: to thrill the football and athleticism jumps off the practice
- 35:24Speaker 11: field when you see it. I think Sam's doing a
- 35:26Speaker 11: great job of moving the team. But at the end
- 35:29Speaker 11: of the day, the preseason games they're gonna play really
- 35:33Speaker 11: the entire preseason, and that's where the bulk of the
- 35:38Speaker 11: evaluation will be. But I would say it's a very
- 35:41Speaker 11: good back and forth.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Okay, all right, that's that's one way to start it off. Anyway,
- 35:47Speaker 1: What has the film shown him from the scrimmage that
- 35:51Speaker 1: they have both with themselves and against the Los Angeles
- 35:54Speaker 1: Rams marked a couple of notes.
- 35:57Speaker 11: I thought we were really good in the red zone offensively,
- 36:00Speaker 11: really nice job. Turp had a couple of touchdowns, CD
- 36:02Speaker 11: had a couple of touchdowns.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Really good physical physicality.
- 36:06Speaker 11: In the run game, you know, against you know what
- 36:07Speaker 11: I think is a very physical defense. You know, we
- 36:11Speaker 11: didn't block movement very well up front in the run game.
- 36:13Speaker 5: We got to get our eyes up.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It's kind of.
- 36:15Speaker 11: Been a something consistent even through camp. You know, offensive
- 36:18Speaker 11: line blocking, you got to get their.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Eyes up anticipating movement.
- 36:21Speaker 11: On defense, I thought the play style was uh was felt,
- 36:26Speaker 11: the demeanor, the way these guys attacked it. I thought
- 36:28Speaker 11: the turnovers were great, and there was a couple, when
- 36:30Speaker 11: I say turnovers, a couple of fourth down stops as well,
- 36:33Speaker 11: areas we need to improve, you know, a little bit
- 36:36Speaker 11: soft in coverage a few times, it was a little
- 36:39Speaker 11: bit airy. I mean, this is a very tight match group,
- 36:41Speaker 11: but some mental layers and things like that provided too
- 36:44Speaker 11: much space that we haven't really done.
- 36:47Speaker 1: So get to the bottom of that.
- 36:48Speaker 11: And on special teams, we were absolutely dominant on the
- 36:51Speaker 11: outside with the gunners and the vice work that we did.
- 36:54Speaker 11: It was really cool to see showed to the team
- 36:56Speaker 11: this morning. And areas we need to improve on teams protection,
- 37:01Speaker 11: you know from our splits oar alignment, you know how
- 37:04Speaker 11: we punch and strike. But overall, I thought it was
- 37:06Speaker 11: a very competitive deal. And you know, like I said,
- 37:08Speaker 11: the film, the film showed that our guys played the
- 37:11Speaker 11: right way.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Okay, Jaydon Blue went through a spell of Texas where
- 37:16Speaker 1: he struggled to secure the football, had some fun linger
- 37:19Speaker 1: and he had a fumble there in the scrimmage as well.
- 37:20Speaker 1: So what was his message to Blue after that fumble?
- 37:24Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, ball can't go on the ground, but
- 37:26Speaker 11: one fumble doesn't make for camp. He's having a really
- 37:29Speaker 11: good camp, both he and Phil MafA. I thought he
- 37:32Speaker 11: rebounded from that, had some of his more physical runs, uh,
- 37:35Speaker 11: you know inside and the A and the B gaps
- 37:37Speaker 11: and uh, there's a cool crack replaced play where he
- 37:40Speaker 11: was up on the corner and put his shoulder down.
- 37:42Speaker 5: I thought that was really cool.
- 37:43Speaker 11: So you know, he knows he's got to protect the ball,
- 37:45Speaker 11: but not didn't.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Over coach it. Okay, didn't didn't over coach it. No
- 37:52Speaker 1: reason to uh to over coach it. Uh there the
- 37:56Speaker 1: uh Texans have already played, of course, the Cowboys played
- 38:02Speaker 1: tomorrow night in Seattle. The Texans lost to the Chargers
- 38:05Speaker 1: last night twenty seven to seven. And every time I
- 38:10Speaker 1: flipped over, I was kind of you know, watching Dodgers,
- 38:13Speaker 1: Brewers and a couple other things. But every time I
- 38:16Speaker 1: flipped over, the Texans were like back on their heels.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Not much was going right for them. But Demko Ryans,
- 38:22Speaker 1: who wasn't real pleased with overall. Nevertheless, you know, had
- 38:26Speaker 1: to take a look at it and look at individual
- 38:28Speaker 1: players like Kad McDonald. His thoughts on McDonald's I had.
- 38:32Speaker 12: To look at the film to see it up close
- 38:34Speaker 12: and see how he did overall. You know, I thought
- 38:38Speaker 12: he we got some good valuable reps. He needs to
- 38:40Speaker 12: get as many reps as possible. I had to continue
- 38:42Speaker 12: to improve his game and improve you know, our style
- 38:46Speaker 12: of play.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Okay, what were the biggest things that stood out to
- 38:50Speaker 1: Demico about the game?
- 38:52Speaker 12: I really want to go back and really dive into
- 38:54Speaker 12: the film to really get a great evaluation of all
- 38:57Speaker 12: the guys here. But I like, we had a lot
- 38:59Speaker 12: of different guys playing tonight, so we rolled a lot
- 39:02Speaker 12: of guys in a lot of guys got valuable playing time.
- 39:04Speaker 12: So for me, I have to really go and watch
- 39:06Speaker 12: it to you know, see who I can single out
- 39:09Speaker 12: from them.
- 39:09Speaker 5: Doing a really good job.
- 39:11Speaker 12: So overall, again it was it was some positive things.
- 39:15Speaker 12: But anytime you I tell our guys, anytime you suit
- 39:18Speaker 12: up and you're competing, you want to win the football game.
- 39:21Speaker 12: No matter who's out there, you want to compete to win.
- 39:23Speaker 12: So it didn't go our way, but it's still a
- 39:25Speaker 12: lot for us to learn and grow from.
- 39:27Speaker 1: One of the things that Devinko Rimes like should talk
- 39:30Speaker 1: about is playing football Houston Texan's style. So was there
- 39:33Speaker 1: a part of Texans style that he just did not
- 39:35Speaker 1: see the.
- 39:36Speaker 5: Style of played it.
- 39:37Speaker 4: I wanted to see.
- 39:38Speaker 12: I wanted to see us play physical, right, and I
- 39:40Speaker 12: did not see that the entire game. There were some
- 39:43Speaker 12: glimpses of us playing physical, but the Chargers day out
- 39:47Speaker 12: physical to us the entire game, right, So it was
- 39:51Speaker 12: not our brand of football. When I speak of playing
- 39:54Speaker 12: our style, that's a physical brand of football and that
- 39:57Speaker 12: was not up to par tonight.
- 39:59Speaker 1: CJ Strod did it not play? It was Davis Mills
- 40:01Speaker 1: doing the play. He was asked about the value of
- 40:03Speaker 1: having Mills there as a backup.
- 40:05Speaker 12: The backup quarterback is true, very valuable position. At Davis
- 40:09Speaker 12: has done a good job of just always being ready
- 40:11Speaker 12: whenever his number is called. He's ready to step up
- 40:14Speaker 12: and not just step.
- 40:15Speaker 5: Up and just to be out there.
- 40:17Speaker 12: He's out there and he can make positive play as
- 40:19Speaker 12: far as we saw him do right through this past
- 40:22Speaker 12: season where we were able to get on a winning
- 40:24Speaker 12: streak there. Davis was the guy who sparked us. So
- 40:28Speaker 12: he's very valuable to have around. We're happy to have him.
- 40:31Speaker 1: All right. And then he wants to have physical corners
- 40:36Speaker 1: in the run defense to be able to come up
- 40:38Speaker 1: and run support and do the job, and he talked
- 40:40Speaker 1: about that for.
- 40:41Speaker 12: Us defensively, you have to be able to set the
- 40:43Speaker 12: eds and it's not just defensive ends who set the eds.
- 40:46Speaker 12: Our corners are going to get challenged a lot because
- 40:49Speaker 12: our defensive end are getting a lot of attention right
- 40:52Speaker 12: from opposing offenses. So when that ball pops on the outside,
- 40:56Speaker 12: corners have to step up and be physical and you
- 40:59Speaker 12: have to tackle defense because you're gonna get a ton
- 41:02Speaker 12: of opportunities.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Probably different than other.
- 41:04Speaker 12: Schemes, but in our scheme, corners are going to get
- 41:06Speaker 12: challenge as tackling and also get.
- 41:08Speaker 4: Challenge down the field.
- 41:10Speaker 12: So you have to have that mental fortitude as a
- 41:13Speaker 12: corner to be able to cover, but also physical enough
- 41:16Speaker 12: to step up and tackle whoever has the football. And
- 41:19Speaker 12: Jay Rock did a really nice job there on their
- 41:21Speaker 12: sideline of making a physical hit.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Okay, all right, we'll hear more from both Brian Schottenheimer
- 41:27Speaker 1: and additionally Demiko. Ryan's coming up next time. What do
- 41:31Speaker 1: you think about Sam Howell?
- 41:33Speaker 6: Sam Howell as a commander, Well, I guess as a
- 41:37Speaker 6: member of the Washington football team at the time. I
- 41:41Speaker 6: saw in Sam Howell a quarterback who wasn't afraid to
- 41:45Speaker 6: kind of step in and sling the ball into harm's way.
- 41:48Speaker 6: But at times I thought his eyes were bigger than
- 41:51Speaker 6: his stomach on what he saw. And so I'm hoping
- 41:53Speaker 6: with experience right that Howell was able to take care
- 41:56Speaker 6: of the ball better, because if he does that, I
- 41:58Speaker 6: think you'll have a future a good NFL backup.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah, my wife still wishes they were called Washington football team.
- 42:05Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, I've got a shirt that well, I probably
- 42:08Speaker 6: wouldn't fit her. But while my Washington football team t
- 42:10Speaker 6: shirts getting a little old and raggedy because obviously it's
- 42:13Speaker 6: five six years old at this point, but it's a
- 42:15Speaker 6: it's a fun artifact I want to show my kids
- 42:17Speaker 6: one day.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I actually ordered for her online from I think from
- 42:21Speaker 1: NFL shop dot com whatever. I ordered her a long
- 42:25Speaker 1: sleeve back when they were Washington Football team long sleeve
- 42:30Speaker 1: T shirt where it said like Washington football team and
- 42:33Speaker 1: you know in the burgundy on the sleeves and a
- 42:35Speaker 1: gray shirt T shirt of it. She likes the long
- 42:39Speaker 1: sleeve t shirts and she really liked that one.
- 42:41Speaker 9: Well.
- 42:41Speaker 6: The big reveal in Washington today is that, you know,
- 42:43Speaker 6: in the end zone, the font is more similar to
- 42:46Speaker 6: what it used to look like before all the name changes.
- 42:48Speaker 6: The burgundy stripes are gone, the spear logo which we
- 42:51Speaker 6: knew was coming back. Yeah, they are trying to rebrand
- 42:55Speaker 6: with the colors and uniforms as close to the redskins
- 42:58Speaker 6: as possible while keeping the commander's name.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Interesting. All right, up next we'll talk some long
- 43:03Speaker 1: war and football, and we're here from a couple of players.
- 43:05Speaker 1: When we continue on thirteen hunderd the Zone in the
- 43:07Speaker 1: iHeart Radio app.
- 43:08Speaker 4: I'm kicking with that given because I'm working for the.
- 43:12Speaker 8: Aren't we all doing that?
- 43:14Speaker 1: As we roll into a weekend here on the fire
- 43:16Speaker 1: Me Up Friday on thirteen hundred of the Zone, Craig Way,
- 43:18Speaker 1: alongside the producer Jay Herman, Hugh Lewis, Huey Lewis, and
- 43:25Speaker 1: the News a very entertaining act in the eighties into
- 43:28Speaker 1: the nineties. Remember when I was telling me about that
- 43:32Speaker 1: we did that We Are the World thing. The other
- 43:34Speaker 1: day we were bumping back with Willie Nelson on the
- 43:36Speaker 1: textan Tuesday and his part of We Are the World. Ye,
- 43:39Speaker 1: Huey Lewis got a solo line in the song. Now,
- 43:45Speaker 1: when you're thinking about, you know, all these mega stars
- 43:48Speaker 1: like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen and
- 43:53Speaker 1: all these mega stars, how does Huey Lewis rate? He
- 43:58Speaker 1: was popular at the time about how would he eight
- 44:01Speaker 1: getting a solo line of time? What was because Prince
- 44:04Speaker 1: refused to show up?
- 44:05Speaker 7: Oh?
- 44:06Speaker 1: Yeah, he was supposed to come over after the American
- 44:08Speaker 1: Music Awards earlier but decided not to. And there were
- 44:15Speaker 1: two theories. One because he just didn't like being around
- 44:18Speaker 1: lots of people, there was one thing. Two although he's
- 44:22Speaker 1: been on other award shows uh and two Uh. Lionel
- 44:28Speaker 1: Ritchie beat him out for like six different categories. And
- 44:32Speaker 1: they said he might have been up in his feelings
- 44:35Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 44:36Speaker 2: You think he he cared about that kind of thing.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Well, they said he did. Yeah, And and Sheila e
- 44:43Speaker 1: was there. It had been you know, an entertainment actor
- 44:46Speaker 1: and had been a companion of his, and they had
- 44:49Speaker 1: a lot of interviews with her, and she said ultimately
- 44:53Speaker 1: had dawned on her that the whole reason she was
- 44:56Speaker 1: invited into that deal was to bring Prince, was to
- 44:58Speaker 1: get him.
- 44:58Speaker 6: To go, yeah, this is the little I won't think
- 45:01Speaker 6: it's too far off track with this.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Do you play the word?
- 45:04Speaker 5: I don't, but I know many who do.
- 45:06Speaker 6: There's a music and banned version of that that's come
- 45:09Speaker 6: out recently.
- 45:10Speaker 2: I think you get a kick out.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I might have to do that. Then.
- 45:15Speaker 1: So Huey Lewis got Prince's line and it was and
- 45:20Speaker 1: it was like right after Steve Perry's line, which was
- 45:24Speaker 1: right after Willie's line, which was right after we've probably
- 45:28Speaker 1: heard Morwick. So yeah, when you played it the other day,
- 45:30Speaker 1: we heard Huey Lewis's line on the tail end of
- 45:33Speaker 1: the verse when we did that. Let's hear from Loghorn's
- 45:37Speaker 1: defensive endaedge rusher Lance Jackson, the sophomore coming off that
- 45:42Speaker 1: outstanding freshman campaign, was asked what is he looking forward
- 45:44Speaker 1: to when they get on the field tomorrow in the scrimmage.
- 45:48Speaker 13: Pad's definitely been really good, because I mean you don't
- 45:51Speaker 13: really get true good looks until you're getting full pads.
- 45:53Speaker 13: So being able to tie up to the ground stuff
- 45:56Speaker 13: just makes it field like a game. And then the
- 45:58Speaker 13: scrimmage is Saturday, just really people flying around making the plays.
- 46:04Speaker 4: Not really focused.
- 46:05Speaker 13: I mean, also obviously focused on technique and stuff, but
- 46:08Speaker 13: it's trying to make plays fly around stuff like that.
- 46:10Speaker 5: All right.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Since he's talking about focus, how much focus has there
- 46:13Speaker 1: been on stopping the run even from the edge.
- 46:15Speaker 13: Yeah, definitely focus on the run a lot right now.
- 46:19Speaker 13: Champ wants us to focus on the run a lot
- 46:21Speaker 13: right now. So really our whole edge room, we really
- 46:23Speaker 13: have even gotten to our full bag with pass rush.
- 46:26Speaker 13: We're just focused on stopping the run right now, and
- 46:29Speaker 13: then when we get that down we're gonna start focusing
- 46:31Speaker 13: on our pass rush more and trying to get into that.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Okay, all right. Also, he's coming off a really good
- 46:37Speaker 1: freshman year, so he was asked, where's he going for improvement?
- 46:41Speaker 13: I really say not, just like being out there, I
- 46:44Speaker 13: feel like I know more what's going on. I can
- 46:47Speaker 13: scan the offense and kind of get an idea of
- 46:49Speaker 13: what's going on. Like last year as a freshman, kind
- 46:52Speaker 13: of just playing hard. I know what to do obviously,
- 46:55Speaker 13: but now I know what to do and then I
- 46:56Speaker 13: can also look at the offense and maybe see what's
- 46:58Speaker 13: coming in.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Okay, all right. Next, he was asked about, you know,
- 47:02Speaker 1: what are what are the biggest things that he's really
- 47:05Speaker 1: been working on in the offseason.
- 47:07Speaker 13: So mainly for me is just I was focused on
- 47:10Speaker 13: getting bigger focus, just focusing more on the IQ of
- 47:15Speaker 13: the game, like I was saying, just trying to be
- 47:17Speaker 13: more smart, knowing what's going on, not just being out there.
- 47:20Speaker 7: All right.
- 47:20Speaker 1: One of the things that can definitely help you is
- 47:22Speaker 1: when you're going up against a veteran player. Now he's
- 47:25Speaker 1: new to the Loghorns. However, Melvinciani, who started his collegiate
- 47:30Speaker 1: career Temple and was good last year at Wake Forest,
- 47:34Speaker 1: seemed to have locked into that starting offensive right tackle spot.
- 47:38Speaker 1: So what about Jackson going up against Siani in practice?
- 47:40Speaker 13: Oh, yeah, that's been really good. I mean, he's a
- 47:42Speaker 13: hard worker. He's never gonna stop working. Anybody will tell you.
- 47:47Speaker 13: There's a bunch of clips on film just going at
- 47:49Speaker 13: it with him. Yeah, So he's a worker, and I
- 47:52Speaker 13: mean he's never gonna back down from the front.
- 47:54Speaker 5: All right.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Jackson's only a sophomorres I mentioned, but he played a
- 47:57Speaker 1: lot last year, so does he feel like a veteran?
- 47:58Speaker 13: Oh yeah, I do feel older. Taking people under my wing.
- 48:02Speaker 13: Richard Wesley, that's my dog. He's gonna be a really
- 48:05Speaker 13: good pass rusher this year. How he's gonna get to
- 48:08Speaker 13: play a lot. So yeah, just taking the younger guys
- 48:10Speaker 13: under my wing, trying to help them as much as
- 48:12Speaker 13: I can.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Okay. Additionally, he was talked about areas of concentration for
- 48:17Speaker 1: himself and for the d.
- 48:18Speaker 13: I definitely want to be able to stop the run.
- 48:19Speaker 13: I mean, I feel like I got bigger for a reason.
- 48:21Speaker 13: That's the main reason I got bigger. So mainly just
- 48:24Speaker 13: focus on stopping the run, being a force, getting TFLs.
- 48:27Speaker 4: But then I also want to get my sacks.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Obviously, all right, so you know, in being able to
- 48:33Speaker 1: do that and making a difference in that concentration. And
- 48:37Speaker 1: he's asked about the differences for the defense from just
- 48:40Speaker 1: a year ago.
- 48:41Speaker 13: I really just feel like, in your face, getting after it, blitzing,
- 48:46Speaker 13: we're going. I mean, I feel like for a lot
- 48:48Speaker 13: of teams it's gonna be hard to pick up all
- 48:51Speaker 13: of our people.
- 48:52Speaker 4: Somebody's gonna be open all the time, all right.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Our friend Kirk Bowles from the Houston Chronicle formerly Austin
- 48:56Speaker 1: American Statesment is a stickler for details, especially it comes
- 49:00Speaker 1: to playing weight. So it was Bowls asking him about
- 49:03Speaker 1: the weight.
- 49:04Speaker 4: Two seventy five right now.
- 49:05Speaker 13: It's fluctuating since its fall camp, but it's around two
- 49:08Speaker 13: seventy five. Did you gave I was finished around like
- 49:11Speaker 13: two fifty five, I think last year.
- 49:13Speaker 11: So would you eat?
- 49:16Speaker 4: I just ate a lot.
- 49:17Speaker 13: Last interview that told about the Chick fil A. Watch
- 49:19Speaker 13: Chick fil A eating tank a lot. Really just eating
- 49:23Speaker 13: a lot and then trying to eat clean too. Someone
- 49:25Speaker 13: just getting fat.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Yeah, important stuff there, he said, eating in the tank.
- 49:29Speaker 1: That's the Texas Athlete is a nutrition center where you
- 49:32Speaker 1: get some really good meals in there. Also asked about
- 49:35Speaker 1: Will musch Champ. Might he slide Jackson inside?
- 49:39Speaker 13: Yeah, I'll definitely be a pass rushing from inside, but
- 49:41Speaker 13: I'll also be on the edge too. I rushed from
- 49:44Speaker 13: the three for five to nine, so I definitely be
- 49:48Speaker 13: rushing from the inside, but also be on outside too.
- 49:50Speaker 1: And when you're really going at it, Lance Jackson says,
- 49:53Speaker 1: you know there's there's gonna be some really good battles
- 49:55Speaker 1: between the offensive line and the defensive line.
- 49:58Speaker 4: I mean, I really just say we get after it.
- 49:59Speaker 4: I mean, sides of the ball, just nasty mentality.
- 50:03Speaker 13: I feel like in the offseason, Worth, we just work
- 50:05Speaker 13: just on focused on just being strong at the line
- 50:10Speaker 13: of scrimmage.
- 50:10Speaker 4: So it's really just what the us going at it.
- 50:12Speaker 1: He mentioned Melvintai earlier. Is he stood out in those
- 50:15Speaker 1: O line battles, I.
- 50:16Speaker 13: Really say all of them. I mean, Baker is also
- 50:18Speaker 13: really good inside. I feel like that was a really
- 50:21Speaker 13: good move for him. It's hard to pass rush against him.
- 50:23Speaker 13: He's he's super athletic, good feet, but he's also strong,
- 50:28Speaker 13: so I feel like he's a really good battle obviously, Trevor.
- 50:32Speaker 13: Really the whole line has been really good this season.
- 50:35Speaker 1: All right, how about some of the younger guys that
- 50:37Speaker 1: might wind up surprising some folks, Well.
- 50:39Speaker 13: I fine, like most of our young players are already
- 50:41Speaker 13: talked about a lot. But like I said, on the defense,
- 50:46Speaker 13: back Rocky looks really good.
- 50:48Speaker 4: He's obviously making plays Cozy. I think he's going to
- 50:52Speaker 4: be really good. He's not really talked about enough. He's
- 50:55Speaker 4: gonna have to play a lot.
- 50:56Speaker 13: He's not to step up special teams too, and then
- 50:58Speaker 13: obviously Richard Westley in our room gonna be a dog
- 51:01Speaker 13: for us in the future.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Okay, all right. Additionally, the system that will Muschamp is
- 51:09Speaker 1: installing for the guys, how much of that system enables
- 51:16Speaker 1: guys like Jackson or Colin Simmons or any of the
- 51:19Speaker 1: down linemen to create havoc.
- 51:21Speaker 13: I thought, just finding ways to get me open, had
- 51:24Speaker 13: me move in a lot because I'm big, but I'm
- 51:28Speaker 13: also athletic, so move me inside, getting go against bigger
- 51:31Speaker 13: people is gonna be really good for me, and then
- 51:32Speaker 13: slanting a lot, so yeah, I think it's gonna be
- 51:34Speaker 13: really good.
- 51:34Speaker 1: For me, all right. His position also allows him and
- 51:37Speaker 1: requires him sometimes to keep track of what's going on
- 51:40Speaker 1: at the tight end spot, whether it's Nick Townson down
- 51:43Speaker 1: there or the Michigan State transfer, Michael Massonis, Amari Winston, Spencer, Shannon,
- 51:49Speaker 1: all of those guys.
- 51:50Speaker 4: Yeah, the tight ends.
- 51:51Speaker 13: I think Banks has definitely really gotten them to focus
- 51:55Speaker 13: a lot more this year because the tight end has
- 51:57Speaker 13: looked very good this year in the run game. Nick, Mike, Spencer,
- 52:01Speaker 13: Shan and all of them have been really good in
- 52:04Speaker 13: the running game.
- 52:05Speaker 1: All right, is there a leader of the defense?
- 52:09Speaker 4: I thought, we don't really have just one leader.
- 52:10Speaker 13: I feel like our whole defense has a bunch of
- 52:12Speaker 13: different leaders. I mean, obviously he Colin Grayson on the
- 52:16Speaker 13: back end to bo, I mean, really our whole I
- 52:20Speaker 13: guess our defense doesn't just have one leader. Everybody's leader
- 52:23Speaker 13: out there. Everybody's talking out there, but there's not one
- 52:27Speaker 13: that's just it's there's not one that anybody that stands
- 52:31Speaker 13: over nobody.
- 52:31Speaker 4: It's just everybody leading.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Yeah, all right. We heard some talk yesterday about Justice
- 52:37Speaker 1: Terry and the progress he's made on the defensive front.
- 52:41Speaker 1: So it's natural that Lance Jackson would be asked about
- 52:44Speaker 1: Justice Terry's progress.
- 52:45Speaker 13: Uh, Justice has been creating havoc a lot. He's just
- 52:50Speaker 13: getting in the playbook. He's moving fast. Like when Justice
- 52:55Speaker 13: is out there, he doesn't really care what's going on.
- 52:57Speaker 13: He's just gonna go hard.
- 52:58Speaker 1: That thing about the leadership of the team, what does
- 53:00Speaker 1: it say about this defense if they do indeed have
- 53:03Speaker 1: multiple leaders?
- 53:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like definitely a lot.
- 53:06Speaker 13: That helped us a lot with our culture this summer,
- 53:10Speaker 13: just kind of being a player led team and all
- 53:13Speaker 13: and not just having certain leaders Like in our leadership committee,
- 53:18Speaker 13: it's not just one or two guys, we have like
- 53:19Speaker 13: sixteen guys in there.
- 53:21Speaker 4: Coach Beckson just trying to get us all the lead.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Okay, given the fact that Colin Simmons is a preseason
- 53:26Speaker 1: All American and pretty much consensus, he's gonna draw a
- 53:30Speaker 1: lot of attention. So with Jackson on the opposite side,
- 53:33Speaker 1: what does that mean about his importance?
- 53:35Speaker 13: Yeah, I think it's just definitely important for us because
- 53:37Speaker 13: it's just it makes us happy win out one on one.
- 53:40Speaker 13: I mean, if they're gonna put everybody on call and
- 53:42Speaker 13: then we got to win on one on one.
- 53:44Speaker 1: A lot of conversation about improving the run defense, what
- 53:47Speaker 1: does that look like on a day by day basis.
- 53:49Speaker 13: Really just focusing on technique, throwing your hands across the line.
- 53:53Speaker 13: I mean, that's really a lot to coming up for me. Mostly,
- 53:55Speaker 13: I think it's just a mentality at the end of
- 53:57Speaker 13: the day.
- 53:58Speaker 1: Is there a major difference between the Peak with Kowski
- 54:01Speaker 1: defense and the Will Muscham defense.
- 54:04Speaker 13: Oh, Like I said earlier, we're gonna be going blitzing
- 54:07Speaker 13: up in your face, like it's religous.
- 54:09Speaker 4: Biggest difference were kind.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Of and one more from Lance Jackson was asked for
- 54:13Speaker 1: a piece of advice if there was one coming from
- 54:15Speaker 1: the family of athletes.
- 54:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel really like just my brother. It's just
- 54:20Speaker 4: a mentality all the time.
- 54:21Speaker 13: Like I mean, if you have a bad day, you
- 54:23Speaker 13: can't let it move on to the next day.
- 54:25Speaker 4: You just got to go to day by day and
- 54:26Speaker 4: then just keep working.
- 54:28Speaker 1: Yeah, he's played in a great program at pleasang or
- 54:31Speaker 1: of Hya and Texa or Cana, and he is capable
- 54:34Speaker 1: of having a really big season. That's the sophomore Lance
- 54:37Speaker 1: Jackson up next. We'll flip to the offensive side. We'll
- 54:40Speaker 1: here from Brandon Baker when we continue on thirteen under
- 54:43Speaker 1: the Zone.
- 54:45Speaker 9: Thank God, it's time.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Love the baking sports right here. Thank God it's time. Ah, Yeah,
- 54:56Speaker 1: it is Friday. Glad to be with you here on
- 54:59Speaker 1: thirteen under his own, let's give away another copy of
- 55:02Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine before we hear from Brandon Baker.
- 55:07Speaker 1: This will be a trivia question. I've noticed over the
- 55:10Speaker 1: past several months. Then long worn fans, long worn die hard.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Long worn football fans. Probably a lot of long worn
- 55:18Speaker 1: fans are pretty proud of the fact that Oklahoma has
- 55:21Speaker 1: not scored a touchdown against Texas in going on three years.
- 55:26Speaker 1: The last time they did was twenty twenty three, which
- 55:28Speaker 1: was incidentally the last time Oklahoma won and won that
- 55:31Speaker 1: contest thirty four to thirty. So they didn't score touchdown
- 55:35Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four and they didn't score touchdown in
- 55:38Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. So I want to What I want
- 55:41Speaker 1: to know is put on your math hat here. I
- 55:45Speaker 1: want to know the combined total of points Oklahoma has
- 55:48Speaker 1: scored against Texas the last two seasons combined. Okay, the
- 55:53Speaker 1: last two seasons twenty twenty four. Make sure you understand
- 55:56Speaker 1: the question. The total number of points they scored against
- 55:59Speaker 1: Texas in twenty twenty four and the total number of
- 56:02Speaker 1: points they scored against Texas in twenty twenty five. At
- 56:05Speaker 1: them up. What's the total number of points Oklahoma has
- 56:09Speaker 1: scored against Texas in these last two seasons combined.
- 56:13Speaker 6: I won't give away the answer, but I'll tell you
- 56:15Speaker 6: this what you could add their points from twenty twenty
- 56:17Speaker 6: two also and also be correct.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Well that's true too, you could. You could so be
- 56:26Speaker 1: the first with the correct answer. And what you do
- 56:30Speaker 1: is download that free and easy iHeartRadio app search AM
- 56:34Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone. It'll pop straight up. Then you'll
- 56:37Speaker 1: see the red button with a white microphone. You push
- 56:39Speaker 1: that button and you tell us the combined total of
- 56:42Speaker 1: points that Oklahoma scored against Texas in the last two years.
- 56:48Speaker 1: And as Jake said, you can throw in twenty twenty two,
- 56:51Speaker 1: is you want, because that's when the long Wune won
- 56:52Speaker 1: forty nine nothing, so it won't increase the total.
- 56:56Speaker 5: So what is the total?
- 56:58Speaker 1: It's that number of combined points twenty twenty four and
- 57:02Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. All right, speaking of the long Horns,
- 57:04Speaker 1: Brandon Baker moving inside? Now? Is Baker moving inside from
- 57:09Speaker 1: tackle to guard?
- 57:12Speaker 14: Uh?
- 57:12Speaker 1: And uh?
- 57:13Speaker 5: Sure?
- 57:13Speaker 1: Do you ever present question from our friend Kirk Bowls
- 57:16Speaker 1: about the weight and his growth plates and all that
- 57:18Speaker 1: other kind of stuff for Brandon Baker?
- 57:21Speaker 14: So, my weight in the springtime is actually at three
- 57:24Speaker 14: or five I'm currently around three fifteen three eighteen range.
- 57:28Speaker 1: I know, do you do that because you're moving lived
- 57:30Speaker 1: into guard a little bit?
- 57:31Speaker 5: Or just yes?
- 57:32Speaker 9: Naturally? I'm also natural most so naturally.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Okay, all right, how about the biggest adjustment he has
- 57:37Speaker 1: to make moving from outside on the edge as a
- 57:40Speaker 1: tackle The inside as a guard.
- 57:42Speaker 9: I would just.
- 57:42Speaker 14: Say the body types going against Ian every day. Oh,
- 57:47Speaker 14: it's been a grind for sure, but I know facing
- 57:50Speaker 14: guys like that is only going to make me.
- 57:51Speaker 9: Better, So it's been great.
- 57:52Speaker 14: He's got a different bodies yeah, yeah, compared to Colin
- 57:55Speaker 14: Simmons or Lash Jackson.
- 57:57Speaker 9: Completely different.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Yeah. I'd say Art is really really big. We talked
- 58:02Speaker 1: about him yesterday. He weighed in earlier in the spring
- 58:07Speaker 1: at sixty five and three hundred eighty seven pounds too
- 58:10Speaker 1: far as now he's dropped some weight the Arkansas transfer.
- 58:13Speaker 6: Wow, he's he's still So he's dropped from from from
- 58:16Speaker 6: maybe three j Kermans closer to too.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's something like that. He has a large human Okay,
- 58:24Speaker 1: why is this move good for Brandon Baker from tackle
- 58:27Speaker 1: to guard?
- 58:27Speaker 9: That's a good question in my opinion.
- 58:31Speaker 14: I don't really like to say I'm a guard or
- 58:33Speaker 14: taboo center. From me, I play offense line, and so
- 58:37Speaker 14: wherever I'm at on the field, I feel like I'm
- 58:39Speaker 14: able to play on my strengths rather be on my hands,
- 58:42Speaker 14: my feet and just being able to stay in front
- 58:45Speaker 14: of guys. I feel like he's been a great, great
- 58:47Speaker 14: strength inside compared to tackle last year.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Okay, so does that mean he has to do things
- 58:52Speaker 1: differently to deal with these bigger bodies.
- 58:58Speaker 14: Yeah, absolutely, making sure I'm playing with levers again under
- 59:02Speaker 14: these guys, Like I mentioned in if I stand straight up,
- 59:06Speaker 14: he's gonna give me every time. So knowing that and
- 59:09Speaker 14: knowing that I have to get under him every time,
- 59:12Speaker 14: I feel confident.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I want to talk about eliminating or greatly reducing the
- 59:18Speaker 1: number of penalties for this team from compared to last year,
- 59:23Speaker 1: and he discussed that learning experience of all those penalties
- 59:26Speaker 1: that were called a year ago, a.
- 59:27Speaker 9: Huge learning experience for me.
- 59:30Speaker 14: And some of those penalties rather be holding or offsides,
- 59:34Speaker 14: We're just I wouldn't even say pregame jitters, just more
- 59:37Speaker 14: so anticipating in a snap count.
- 59:39Speaker 9: But now moving inside, I'm able to drift the ball
- 59:42Speaker 9: a lot, a lot easier.
- 59:43Speaker 14: So that's been a huge emphasis this offseason, being able
- 59:46Speaker 14: to get off the ball when the ball is snapped.
- 59:48Speaker 1: All right, Cole Hudson got his fifth year of eligibility.
- 59:51Speaker 1: He's getting ramped up back into the rotations the offensive line.
- 59:54Speaker 1: What does it mean to Brandon Baker to have Cole
- 59:55Speaker 1: Hudson back in the mix.
- 59:57Speaker 14: That was an interesting topic. But I heard the news
- 1:00:03Speaker 14: that he was returning, it was great. Cole has always
- 1:00:06Speaker 14: been a great locker room guy along with a great
- 1:00:08Speaker 14: leader on this team. He's somebody that coming in my
- 1:00:11Speaker 14: freshmany I was able to learn a ton from and
- 1:00:13Speaker 14: so having him back has been great and he's looked
- 1:00:16Speaker 14: great so far.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: All right. So with Hudson back and everybody melding into
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: their spots, how has the offensive line come together to
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: disappoint as a whole?
- 1:00:23Speaker 14: I feel like we're turning up and up all the
- 1:00:25Speaker 14: right right direction. And so for me knowing that and
- 1:00:29Speaker 14: really believing that, I feel like it's been great for
- 1:00:32Speaker 14: us collectively because I know I'm not the only guy
- 1:00:34Speaker 14: that feels that. I feel like we're all turning up
- 1:00:36Speaker 14: individually but also collectively.
- 1:00:38Speaker 9: So that's been a lot of fun.
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: So Baker is moving the right guard. That opens up
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: the spot at left guard there on that offensive front.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Lawrence Seymour, one of the long worn transfers, is a
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: guy who is a candidate for that starting spot as well.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Seymour was All Conference at Western Kentucky, and so Baker
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: was asked about Seymour and how he's coming along great.
- 1:01:03Speaker 14: Laurn Simour is doing great, phenomenal, phenomenal player, great hand,
- 1:01:07Speaker 14: super strong, quick feet.
- 1:01:10Speaker 9: He's gonna do great for us this year.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: One of the biggest topics of conversation in this summer
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: leading up is the recently pass five for five yearl
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: which allows you, once you are once you were on campus,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: you got five years to play. He played five years,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: you have five years. That's it. No more red shirts
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: things like that, it's five for five. What about Brandon
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Baker's spots?
- 1:01:32Speaker 14: Never really put much thought into it, but I find
- 1:01:34Speaker 14: it's a good opportunity for younger guys, but also also
- 1:01:38Speaker 14: older guys. Someone mentioned Cole Hudson's situation, so being able
- 1:01:42Speaker 14: to have him back for a fifth year has been great,
- 1:01:44Speaker 14: But also younger guys coming in knowing that they're not
- 1:01:47Speaker 14: gonna have to compete against the twenty five year old senior,
- 1:01:51Speaker 14: seventh eighth year senior. I find that would be a great,
- 1:01:53Speaker 14: great transition for college football moving forward.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: All right, new faces in the backfield, obviously at the
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: running back spot, most notably those being really Brown and
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Hollywood smothers. How about his thoughts and what the running
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: backs are bringing.
- 1:02:05Speaker 14: Electric, So Raheem he was actually after talking, I was
- 1:02:08Speaker 14: able to hear him a little bit. But everything that
- 1:02:10Speaker 14: he said about Hollywood, Rayleie, and Derek Cooper, I agree
- 1:02:14Speaker 14: with him with everything that he said, all electric. All
- 1:02:18Speaker 14: of them had different sets of skills. So I feel
- 1:02:20Speaker 14: like they'll be great for us this year, and so
- 1:02:23Speaker 14: we'll have a lot of fun flogging for him, that's
- 1:02:25Speaker 14: for sure.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: In Brandon Baker, you have the only married player on
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: the football team. You used to get one or two,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: sometimes three on a team. He's the only one this year.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Does he have any advice?
- 1:02:37Speaker 9: Actually, not that often. I tell guys all the time,
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: I'm an open resource.
- 1:02:42Speaker 14: So whenever they're going through some things, I letting him
- 1:02:45Speaker 14: know that I'm open, and when that opportunity does present itself,
- 1:02:50Speaker 14: I'm more than welcome to helping guys.
- 1:02:54Speaker 9: I guess you could say it.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: You're a marriage counselor. I guess you could say that
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: he's ready to talk. Certainly about we heard from Raheem
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Biles and how special he is, and Baker agrees.
- 1:03:06Speaker 9: Just his feel for the game.
- 1:03:08Speaker 14: He has a great feel for what's going on around him.
- 1:03:12Speaker 9: He mentioned his strings. He's a great blitzer.
- 1:03:15Speaker 14: He's a phenomenal pass rusher, really good hands, and he's
- 1:03:20Speaker 14: just I'm not gonna say shorter guy, but he's not
- 1:03:23Speaker 14: six four sixty five, so he has great leverage already
- 1:03:26Speaker 14: natural leverage. And so for a guy like that, you
- 1:03:29Speaker 14: have to know where he is on the field at
- 1:03:31Speaker 14: all times, because if you don't, you'll miss him.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: He would tell you a similar thing about the other
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: guy we just heard from Lance Jackson.
- 1:03:38Speaker 14: I would just say his feel for the game as
- 1:03:39Speaker 14: well being able to understand what's going on yesterday, actually
- 1:03:44Speaker 14: two days ago, I actually had a pull play and
- 1:03:48Speaker 14: I was pulling a block him and he was there
- 1:03:49Speaker 14: right now. So he's he's feeling these things, what's going
- 1:03:52Speaker 14: on around him. So I feel like for him, just
- 1:03:55Speaker 14: just taking the next step helped him a lot.
- 1:03:58Speaker 9: In the gamer say you got last year?
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Okay? All right? Then there is from Brandon Baker moving
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: inside from tackle to guard. We'll be back to wrap
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: up Hower number two here on thirteen Under the Zone,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: third and final hour of a week, as well as
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: today's program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Craig Way alongside of the producer Ja Kerman glad to
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: have you with us. In a few minutes, we'll talk
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: some baseball with Gene Watson, our MLB insider. I know
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: we visited with him at the start of the week,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: but he had an experience last night you have to
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: hear about if you saw a Field of Dreams game
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: telecase did you even? Did you see it?
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: I can't watch Netflix on my TV.
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: Oh yeah, they it's odd.
- 1:04:45Speaker 6: It's a real account sharing crackdown happening. So okay, yeah,
- 1:04:49Speaker 6: I didn't watch any baseball on my phone last night.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: I did see a highlight or too.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it was something else. It was quite the
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: sight to see, you know, the Hall of famers walking
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: out of the cornfield and and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: And I want to get his description on all that.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: And we have some other baseball questions to ask him,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: but we have him coming up in a few minutes.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: We are going to give away a third and final
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine for the week,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: so we'll have that. Stay tuned for that. So we'll
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: have that coming up in a little bit as well.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: It'll be a random giveaway here in this third and
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: final hour. Do that Okay to the NFL preseason before
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: we get the break. Texans, as you know, were rather
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: unimpressive in their loss in their preseason opener, and it
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: is important memory it's just a preseason opener and you're
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: not playing your regular guys for the balance of the game. Still,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: in all, Demko Ryans was pleased overall, how when he
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: was asked about those rookies that got in and in
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: his overall perspective.
- 1:05:53Speaker 12: For our rookies, think a few guys that are really
- 1:05:55Speaker 12: good outings just from being there on the sideline watching it.
- 1:05:58Speaker 12: Starting first off with Marlon Klein. He really shining today.
- 1:06:01Speaker 12: Everybody saw the pass that he caught. It's where I
- 1:06:05Speaker 12: see him where he can excel for our offense and
- 1:06:08Speaker 12: just open the offense up for us. It's his catch
- 1:06:10Speaker 12: radius is just tough to guard him right, and then
- 1:06:14Speaker 12: he definitely has to speed as well to run away
- 1:06:16Speaker 12: from guys. So he stood out to me, not only
- 1:06:19Speaker 12: just to catch him, but watching him in.
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: Line blocking in the running game.
- 1:06:22Speaker 12: I saw him finishing some blocks there exactly how we
- 1:06:25Speaker 12: wanted done. So a ton of positives there for him
- 1:06:28Speaker 12: anytime take the football away. I think Kamari Ramsey did
- 1:06:30Speaker 12: a good job of getting an interception there. Should have
- 1:06:33Speaker 12: had a few more that we let go through our hands.
- 1:06:36Speaker 12: But you know, I thought the backs ran well. Noah
- 1:06:38Speaker 12: Whittison did a good job running the football, Lewis Bond
- 1:06:42Speaker 12: getting him back.
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: Doing some punt returning.
- 1:06:44Speaker 12: I thought that was a lot of positives there for him,
- 1:06:47Speaker 12: something we can definitely continue to work more and he
- 1:06:50Speaker 12: can improve on. So just starting as we started the
- 1:06:53Speaker 12: game with our first first unit in our offensive line,
- 1:06:57Speaker 12: thought they did a really nice job that first drive,
- 1:06:59Speaker 12: just having a positive drive, driving down and getting the score.
- 1:07:03Speaker 12: Jerry Wayne showed up making a lot of good plays.
- 1:07:06Speaker 12: Davis made some good decisions there. So overall it was
- 1:07:09Speaker 12: some positive things there early on. Just collectively, it's not
- 1:07:13Speaker 12: our style of play and so a lot for us
- 1:07:16Speaker 12: to improve upon.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Ryan's also was asked if this is what he expected
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: from Klein. You know, there was a lot of talk
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: about him going coming out of the draft and what
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: he could do. So he was asked, is this what
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: he expected to see from him?
- 1:07:32Speaker 12: And we expect that and even he has more as well.
- 1:07:35Speaker 12: I think this is just a start of Marlon Klein
- 1:07:37Speaker 12: as he continues to grow and learn how we're doing things.
- 1:07:40Speaker 12: Like he's a really good athlete, right, and he's strong
- 1:07:44Speaker 12: and physical at the line of scrimmings. So that's what
- 1:07:46Speaker 12: we saw from the Michigan tape and that's what he's
- 1:07:48Speaker 12: been showing on training camp.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so there's something from Devinko Ranz. Now
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: the Cowboys and they get ready for their preseason opener
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: tomorrow night in Seattle against the Seahawks. Bryan shot I'm
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: or the head coach, was it was asked about a
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: variety of things we've heard from him earlier, but Shotty
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: was asked to expand on the specifics of this player
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: led council they have.
- 1:08:12Speaker 11: Yeah, I think you know, at the end of the day,
- 1:08:14Speaker 11: it's their council. It's not mine. We kind of created
- 1:08:17Speaker 11: it as a coaching staff and you know, selecting the guys,
- 1:08:20Speaker 11: but like I'm not, you know, very involved with it.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Todd.
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: You know, they're going to meet about every two weeks.
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: They'll report back to me.
- 1:08:28Speaker 11: A couple of them will come to me, not all
- 1:08:29Speaker 11: of them, not all eleven and hit me with issues, ideas, suggestions,
- 1:08:35Speaker 11: things like that. But it's really just about giving them
- 1:08:38Speaker 11: a voice and like we talked about the other day,
- 1:08:41Speaker 11: I didn't have conditioning planned and they decide they want
- 1:08:44Speaker 11: to run.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: What's that tell you?
- 1:08:45Speaker 11: It tells you that they realize and they believe that
- 1:08:47Speaker 11: what we're telling them about the science of you know,
- 1:08:50Speaker 11: conditioning matters. And there's a lot of strong leaders in
- 1:08:55Speaker 11: that locker room, and it's not just the eleven in
- 1:08:57Speaker 11: the leadership council.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Next, talk about the offense. Now we know about Schottenheimer's
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: influence on the offense, but of course Clayton Adams is
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator for this team, or at least sharing
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: in the play calling duty. So where shot he was asked?
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Has Clayton adams influence shown on the offense the most
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: great question?
- 1:09:19Speaker 11: I actually, I don't think it's anything you know, schematically.
- 1:09:23Speaker 11: I think it's his command in the meetings. You know,
- 1:09:26Speaker 11: I don't install passes anymore. You know, he'll do a
- 1:09:28Speaker 11: lot of the passes, does a great job with the passes.
- 1:09:31Speaker 11: It's kind of good for me to listen because it,
- 1:09:34Speaker 11: you know, makes my creative juices get going. Curiosity, how
- 1:09:37Speaker 11: you can compliment things and stuff like that. But just
- 1:09:40Speaker 11: his command of the entire system, not just the run game.
- 1:09:43Speaker 11: He's way more than just the run game coordinator. He's
- 1:09:45Speaker 11: truly an offensive coordinator now. And that's why I've allowed
- 1:09:48Speaker 11: him to call some plays throughout training camp. He called
- 1:09:51Speaker 11: the two minute and the one call it period we
- 1:09:53Speaker 11: had against the Rams, and you know, might let him
- 1:09:56Speaker 11: call some in the preseason. I'll probably do most of it,
- 1:09:59Speaker 11: but you know, probably let him call some because he's
- 1:10:02Speaker 11: earned the right to do that.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: And now that the Cowboys are in pads and they've
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: had tackling going on as they get ready for this
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: preseason opener tomorrow night in Seattle, the question for Shopenheimer
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: was how much more does he know or how much
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: more does he learn on a day in, day out
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: basis based on the practicing. Now that there is actual
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: tackling involved in these practices, I'm excited.
- 1:10:30Speaker 11: I'm excited about the running back room that we've built.
- 1:10:34Speaker 11: You know, I think, you know, Javonte probably won't get
- 1:10:37Speaker 11: a whole lot of run this preseason, so Jaden and
- 1:10:40Speaker 11: Fiel are gonna get a bunch of work. They're in
- 1:10:41Speaker 11: a tight battle for the backup running back spot. Emlie
- 1:10:46Speaker 11: Davis I've talked about is he I mean, is he's
- 1:10:49Speaker 11: a guy that keeps showing out. He had a good
- 1:10:50Speaker 11: scrimmage against the Rams the other day. He's explosive speed guy,
- 1:10:54Speaker 11: he's got good size. And then you know Jay Sean
- 1:10:57Speaker 11: Corbin that we brought in. I mean, he picked right
- 1:10:59Speaker 11: up where he left off. He caught up to those
- 1:11:01Speaker 11: five or six installs that he was behind. And you know,
- 1:11:04Speaker 11: we'll roll those guys through pretty well.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: So there's some thoughts from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: as well as hearing from Demico Ryans. We heard from
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: them earlier in the program, But some more thoughts on
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: that Cowboys and Seahawks tomorrow. In fact, the Cowboys play
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: two of their three preseason games on the road. The
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: only one they have at home is the last one
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: against New Orleans, but two of the three are on
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: the road for Dallas, and the first one is tomorrow night.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: Of course, Texans aid their first one last night. We
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: talked about it earlier. You know, some impressions, Fernanda Mendoza
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: looking impressive his first go around. Drew Aller also, so
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: you know, it is, after all, the first weekend of
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: the of the preseason, so you can only draw so
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: much from it. But at least it's the start of that. Okay,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: we do want to give away another copy of Dave
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Like I said, this hour is
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: going to be a random drawl. And what we mean
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: by the random draw is, you know, when as people
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: you know load in on the talkback microphone the talkback feature,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: we take a random number in the queue for who
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: has lined up in the queue. So here's the random
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: number for this hour. The random number is going to
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: be six. Six is the random number. So what does
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: that all mean? Well, and again I repeat it, will
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: continue to repeat it that. What you need to do,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: if you haven't already done so, is to download the
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: free and easy iHeartRadio app. You know, you go to
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: your app store and you look a Buyheart and it
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: comes up and you and you see says get and
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: then you pop it and then you have to kind
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: of double click on the side to install. That's about
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: as complicated as it gets. After that, it rolls in.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Right, And what was the complicated piece there?
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: You'd be surprised that the number of people who who
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: are a little bit put off by the word download
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: because we know about all the toxic and trashy downloads
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: that can happen on your laptop, but it can happen
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: on your iPhone or you're Android as well. But this
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: is not so it's safe, it's free, it's easy. So
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: you download the iHeartRadio app. Once you have downloaded, then
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: you just do a search in your search bar, search window,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: whatever you wanted to be. You do a search for
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred. The zone is I always say, it
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: pops straight up, and so when you enter AM thirteen
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: under the zone, it pops up. And then you're going
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: to see two buttons ones, a little white one that's
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: in the shape of an arrowhead or a triangle that's
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: to listen what's going on in the air at the time.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: It's the red button is what you want. The red
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: one there that has the little white microphone. You tap that.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: That's our talk back microphone. And then when you do it,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: just tell us just say I want the magazine. That's
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: all you have to say, I want the magazine. And
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: the sixth person to do it in the lineup right now,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: the six to one in the queue. I don't know
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: how to tell you how to be number six. Just
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: good luck to you on that. That's why we mixed
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: it up between the random nature of doing these and
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: trivia questions. You give folks some more than one way
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: to win. Because some folks are good with trivia but
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: just aren't very lucky on the draw. Others might have
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: more luck on the draw and aren't as good with trivia.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: That's why we want to give everybody an opportunity. So anyway,
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: be the sixth person again. If you haven't already, download
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: that free and easy iHeart Radio app, you search AM
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone. You press that red button with
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: a white microphone on it. It opens up your talkback
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: microphone and then you say I want the magazine. And
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: if you're the sixth person in line to do that,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: then you're gonna win a copy of it all right.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Up next, we talked baseball with Geene Watson from the
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox front office. When we continue on sports
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: Normally.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: On the program we take the opportunity once a week
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: to visit with our good friend MLB insider and front
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: office genius for the Chicago White Sox. That's Gene Watson
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: and Gino did visit with us earlier in the week. However,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: we thought it prudent to have another conversation with Gino
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: today for a couple of reasons. One, he's getting ready
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: to head off to the Pacific Rim and we'll talk
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: more about that a little bit, and we hope to
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: hook up when he's in Japan next week. But the
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: other reason is you talk about your polarity change. Yeah,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: he'll be in Japan next week. He was in the
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: cornfield last night in Dyersville, Iowa, for the Field of
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Dreams game. Phillies beat the Twins, but that played secondary
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: to all the other pomp and circumstance that happened last
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: night there in Iowa, and Gino joins us right now.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: Have you come down from Cloud nine? That was a
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: fun experience, wasn't it.
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: It was unbelievable and I really have not I mean,
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: I've had goosebumps for about twelve hours now just thinking
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: about all of the players and the connections to your childhood.
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: And you know, driving over with Jim, you know we're
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: gonna go into this tent and then they're gonna walk
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: us out on the field, and then you walk in
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: the tent and there's Tony LaRussa and Joe Torre and
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: Mike Schmidt, CC Sabathia, Billy Wagner, Jeff Kent, Bert Blylevin
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: Catfish Hunt. It was just it was unbelievable the guys
- 1:16:26Speaker 5: that I was able to interact with last night. And
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: the coolest part of it was seeing the young Hall
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: of Famers that were so excited to see Steve Carlton
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: and guys like that Andre Dawson.
- 1:16:38Speaker 8: It was it was really something to be.
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: A part of last night.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: It looked like it looked like Larry Walker was also
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: kind of filming it on on his iPhone as he
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: walked out of the cornfield with the guys.
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: The real cool part was as they came back to
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: the tent after the event, just the it was like
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: a rock star after a concert. The adrenaline was high,
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: the arts were beating, and you know, these guys are
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: competitors and I don't think they had felt that for
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: a long time.
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: But it was something special.
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: And the really cool part about it was was to
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: see that the honor and respect that each Hall of
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: Famer has for each other, and how within the group
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: of Hall of Famers and they were only twenty three
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: there last night, how the interworking's work of seniority and respect,
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: and it was really something I'll never get another chance
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: to do something like that again.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: It was something else. Gene Watson joining us here. Okay,
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: I want to ask you some specifics about all that.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: First of all, you said you actually you got to
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: walk out from the cornfield like the Hall of Famers.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Did you get to walk out through that or did
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: you get to walk through the cornfield?
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: I got to walk through through the cornfield at the
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: movie site. Yep. Rick Eckstein, who was one of our
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: coaches for the All American Game, we actually did videos
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: at the movie site.
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: The day before.
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: So I've actually got a video going into the corn
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: and then another video coming out of the corn saying
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: is this Heaven? It was really something in the movie site.
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: If you haven't been, it is worth every mile to
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: get there. And just the setting as the sun sets
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: and the sun hits the corn certain ways, it's magical.
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: It's not anything I got goosebumps. Again, It's not anything
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: you can ever describe unless you experience it firsthand.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: You know, Geno. One of the most oft asked questions
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: that I hear about that whole deal of the cornfield
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: when the fly ball goes in there for a home run,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: or when the guys are walking out, is what's out there?
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: What's in the cornfield? Are there ghosts orre this? I
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: imagine it's just rows of corn and stuff like that,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: but it probably gives you that little bit of a
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: surreal feeling walking through the actual very tall stalks of corn,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: just like in the movie where James Earl Jones and
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Radiot and all those guys are disappearing into it.
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: It's a little unnerving. I mean, the corn this time
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: of year is so high, it's it's well above your
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: head and I'm only five foot eight, but it gets
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: a little unnerving the deeper you get back there. And
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: and they had gotten tons of rain in the days
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: leading up to all the events, so it was a
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: little soft. But you know that wind gets blowing and
- 1:19:15Speaker 5: the corn gets to chucking each.
- 1:19:17Speaker 8: Other and it can get a little unnerving.
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: But you know, I had never seen that much corn
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: before in my life. Even the miles and miles and
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: miles leading up to the stadium.
- 1:19:29Speaker 8: It's just it's more corn than you can.
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: Ever imagine in your life. And it's such you know,
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: you imagine Iowa being this flat land, it's beautiful rolling
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: hills and and and inside the stadium. For them to
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: be able to grow the corn in between the stands
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: and the plane surface, the meticulous work that it takes to.
- 1:19:48Speaker 8: Do that, I mean, they they did not miss a detail.
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: In making this venue one of the most incredible things
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: you've ever seen in your life.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: Wow, all right, I have some questions just about you know,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: first of all, the guy who played in the game
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: looked like they really enjoyed themselves. Kyle Schwarber, who had
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: two home runs and it, had some really nice things
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: to say about you know, and maybe taking his son
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: back there some days, I may never get this opportunity
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: again in the history of it, and all of those
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: kinds of things off of that. And they hadn't had
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: it there I guess what in about four years, and
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: some of that had to do. You correct me if
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: I'm wrong, Geno. They had the old smaller field where
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: by the movie set thing, and they hadn't really committed
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: to the way that the state and the property and
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: the community have committed to it now where I think
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: I read there's three thousand permanent seats. But they enlarged
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: it by the temporary bleachers brought in to get it
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: to eight thousand seats, and it was jam packed last night.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: So I'm envisioning and imagining this is something that Major
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: League Baseball would like to do every year.
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: It is a full blown double A stadium.
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: Now, the infrastructure, the concrete, the suite, the media, sidelines.
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: It's incredible and there's gonna be games at this ballpark
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: for a long time, Minor league games, Tobe college tournaments.
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: The only real issue is the hotels. The closest hotels
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: probably thirty five to forty minutes away. But this is
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: going to turn into one of the top venues in
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: the country in no time.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: Well, and on that score, this is the other I
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: wanted to get your perspective on this. Over the past,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: really even the past six seven years, we've seen Major
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: League Baseball put games, especially as we've gotten in July
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: and into the dog days of August, into some alternate sites,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: which I thought was a fabulous idea. Obviously, they the
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: game in Williamsport during the Little League World Series. Apparently
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: that's here to stay. I thought this game in Dyersville
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: was here to stay, and then it went away for
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: a few years, but now looks like, like you said,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: with their commitment to the ballpark being larger, that it'll
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: probably be around. They played at the historic Rickwood Field
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: in Birmingham. Before where where the Birmingham Black parents of
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: the old Negro Baseball League played they played? They played
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: at Fort Bragg on the Army base in North Carolina,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: So they played in some different spots over the year years.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Is this something you could see MLB doing not just
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: in Iowa, not just obviously in Williamsport, but in some
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: other places when we're talking about a one hundred and
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: sixty two game schedule where there's maybe some flexibility to
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: play some of these games a handful of them, much
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: like what the NFL is doing in Mexico and Europe.
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: In South America, I think there is. I've been a
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: part of the Little League Game in twenty twenty one
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: with the Angels and then last night the Philip Dreams Game.
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: I think a really cool game would be the Rockies
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: and the Diamondbacks playing in Farmington, New Mexico at the
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: Konniemac World Series, which is essentially the High School Omaha.
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: But you've seen the Big League game in Omaha now
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: sent around the College World Series in an effort to
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: kind of merge college and professional baseball a little bit closer.
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: But no, anytime you can do these games, they're very
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: special in special venues. Travels certainly is a big deal.
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: Even yesterday, you know, we're worried about both teams getting
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: in with heavy rain.
- 1:23:27Speaker 7: Who is going to be.
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: Able to stay for the game today if it hadn't
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: been rained out from a Hall of Famers standpoint, So
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: you've got to schedule that off day in there, and
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: then you gotta have teams that it's easy to get to.
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: The Phillies were in Saint Louis, Minnesota was going back
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: with this series, and so it just worked out. But certainly,
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: anytime they can find these special venues to have these games,
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: it's it's special for everyone involved.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: So what you're telling me, Gino, is that the odds
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: of the Dodgers and Yankees playing in it, playing against
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: one another, might be limited a little bit because of
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: travel and nothing else.
- 1:24:01Speaker 5: I really think that the way they do the schedule
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: now is kind of electronically, and then when they had
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: the schedule set, they look at the date and they say, okay,
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: who can get to Dodgersville, and that's really what it's
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: going to be moving.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: Forward, no doubt about it. Gene Watson joining us here.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Do you don't want to ask you about a couple
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: other things. First of all, you know pitching very well.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: You were a pitcher, your son was a pitcher, And
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: I want to get your thoughts on this. Last night
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: Dodgers and Brewers play, and you mentioned it's gonna be
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: a big series coming up. It looked like the Dodgers
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: had it in the bag. I got a big three
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: run pinch hit home run for Max Munsey in the sixth.
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: They're up four to two.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: They go to the ninth inning, Edwin Diaz comes out
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: of the bullpen and he doesn't have it. He winds
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: up taking the loss because he and the Brewers did
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: it in.
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: Classic Milwaukee fashion.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: As you know, Geno, they had no extra base hits
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: in the game, so they bang out some single wrapped
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: around a couple of walks. Next thing you know, three
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: runs across the plate, and the Brewers get out of
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: there with a five to four victory. So Diaz now
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: has blown three consecutive saves, three in his last four attempts,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: and and four overall this season. He only blew three
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: total saves last year in pitching for the Mets. Now,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: he says he's sound physically coming off of the elbow surgery.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Uh there, but he just hasn't been consistent of He
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: had the slider looking really good a couple of times
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: and other times not so much. And and it looks
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: like the fastball is not what it was before. So
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: as a guy who knows pitching, and when you look
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: at a guy like that, who is a premier closer
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: who's going through the struggles, and we've seen it with
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: other relievers as well. You've seen it with other relievers
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: as well. What kind of conversation goes on, say between
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: Mark pryor the pitching coach and Edwin Diaz, or if
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: Dave Roberts gets involved, or other major league teams when
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: the closure all of a sudden can't find it or
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: can't find the strike zone consistently without giving up a
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: big hit, what are those conversations.
- 1:26:08Speaker 7: Like, can't believe you're asking me this.
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: We had this conversation at the All American Game, the
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: high school All American Game on Wednesday. Really, it takes
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: a special, special guy.
- 1:26:20Speaker 7: To get the last three outs.
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: Of a ball game, and it's not necessarily about stuff,
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: and it's not necessarily about command, and just the closers
- 1:26:29Speaker 5: that I've been a part of in my career, Jeff Russell,
- 1:26:33Speaker 5: Billy Wagner, John Smoltz, Fugus being a Wade Davis, got
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: just special makeups and guys that can go out and
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: blow a game and.
- 1:26:45Speaker 8: Have the willwithal to come back the.
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: Very next day and say give me the ball. It's
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: a special trait and not everybody can do it. And
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: in today's game, where everything is kind of matchup base
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: and finding that window for a reliever to be successful,
- 1:27:01Speaker 5: we're putting guys in situations that psychologically and mentally they're
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: not capable of holding up with it. And so I
- 1:27:09Speaker 5: think that since one thing that's kind of been lost
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: in today's game is we just look at all three
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: ounces the same. It tooks a really special guy to
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: get the last three outs of a game like that,
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: and then there's leverage for a team out of the playoffs,
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: and there's leverage for a team in a championship setting,
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: and that's too completely levels of pressure, and so I
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: think you just try to make him comfortable if you
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: don't have the alternative to put somebody else in that spot.
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: You better make the guy comfortable and make him feel
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: like you believe in him so he can go out
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: there and get the job done.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: Interesting stuff. Geene Watson, join us here to talk baseball.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: Here's the team we haven't talked that much about. We
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: mentioned him a time or two, but I want to
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: get your thoughts on this. Tampa Bay's won nine in
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: a row. They won nine of their last ten. They
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: by percentage now have the best record in baseball, even
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: better than to walk Milwaukee is one more win, but
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: they've got a couple more losses. Tampa Bay is up
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: six and a half on the Gankees, are up nine
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: and a half on the Red Sox, who finally snapped
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: their five game losing street yesterday. Here's my question. Are
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: the Rays equipped to run away and hide in this division?
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Right now? Here we are in early August. They're up
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: six and a half on New York.
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: They are, and they are truly the model organization right now.
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: They've taken some injuries with McLanahan and Rats Mudsen, which
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: they need to try to get those guys right. I
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: don't know that McLanahan will be before the playoffs. They're
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: just so very good at They've got Kevin Cash is
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: one of the best managers, if not the best manager
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: in the game of baseball. They know who they are
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: as an organization. They're very good at game planning. They've
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: got an incredible culture around that twenty six man roster.
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: They've got one of the best minor league systems in
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: all of baseball, and so they just know who they are.
- 1:28:52Speaker 5: They don't apologize for it, just like Cleveland, and this
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: is their opportunity right now to make that next step.
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: Maybe could they have gone a little bit more at
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: the deadline got me out of Schoogle. They certainly had
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: the players to do it. But this is a club
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: that has a window to win now and for the
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: next four or five years. And when you couple that, well,
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: what they've done the last five years, it truly makes
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: them one of the more exceptional organizations in baseball. They
- 1:29:20Speaker 5: just don't have that World championship yet.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: Okay, all right, here's the other thing, the other side
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: of this. We'll flip it over. You mentioned Cleveland. I
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: want to ask you about your division. Your ball club's
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: up two and a half on Detroit, which all of
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: a sudden has come to life again even after the
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: trades with Mace and school Ball leaving. They've won seven
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: of their last ten. They're two and a half back,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: the Twins are three and a half back after last
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: night's loss, and the Guardians, who have fallen off.
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: Are four back.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: But still we're talking about four teams within four games
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: of first place. If I asked you now here on
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: August the fifteenth or fourteenth, if I asked you today,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: if you thought this is going to go down to
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: at the very least the final week, if not the
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: final day of the regular season, would you agree.
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: You know, us beating Cleveland two out of three, we
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: actually even if they sweep us, when we play them
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: three more, we own the tiebreaker over them. We got
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: three big games against the Tigers this weekend in Detroit.
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: They're gonna come to us for a four game series
- 1:30:23Speaker 5: in September. The last seven games of the season, we
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: have Kansas City and Colorado, and you would think that
- 1:30:29Speaker 5: that could lend to us a little bit, but baseball's baseball. Uh,
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: you know, hopefully they'll start shutting down some of their
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: good starters by then. But Now this thing is going
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: to the final week of the season, and kudos to
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: the Tigers for just understanding where they are. The philosophy
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: is to win a world championship. You don't think you're
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: gonna be able to sign Scooba.
- 1:30:48Speaker 8: Long term, Go get the players for him.
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: You got Jackson job coming back. We're still gonna have
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: a chance to compete. And aj Hinch again one of
- 1:30:56Speaker 5: the best managers in baseball. He believes in his team
- 1:30:58Speaker 5: and he's got them ready to go.
- 1:30:59Speaker 8: So it's going to be a great.
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: Race down to the final week and looking forward to it.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: Is it a sign of maturity for your ball club
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: that you get on a roll, then there's a hiccup
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: or two, a bump in the road, and all of
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: a sudden it gets tied a little bit and then
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: you kind of write the ship a little bit that
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: you know, and it's kind of been tread and water,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: I guess over the last week. But you played a
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: red hot Red Sox team at one point before they
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: cooled off a little bit. Is it a sign of
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: maturity of your ball club? Uh, that they've been able
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: to weather that storm and still be standing in first
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: place in mid August.
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: No question, Craig. And you know we've talked about this
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: as an organization a lot this week. You know, when
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: we won the Wednesday night game against the Yankees and
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: comeback fashion that Thursday day game, I walked into the
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: clubhouse about two hours for first pitch, and every coach,
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: every support staff member, every player was in the clubhouse,
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: and the energy and the enthusiasm surrounding each other told
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: this old front office guy, you know, belonging here right now.
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: And I turned around and walked out. And whenever you
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: have that type of synergy around your team, you got
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: to let it go. You don't interfere, you staddle away.
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: And then we go to Boston and play arguably the
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: best team in baseball at the time, three very tough
- 1:32:15Speaker 5: games in front of a sold out crowd, and that
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: really was like, Okay, we can do this. Are we
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: there yet? No, we got a little bit to go,
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: and then unfortunately we lose the series versus the Reds
- 1:32:26Speaker 5: two out of three in three very close games. So
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: you know, we're teakering right on.
- 1:32:30Speaker 7: The edge of being great.
- 1:32:32Speaker 5: We have a good team. It's a young team.
- 1:32:34Speaker 8: The core is going to be together forever.
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: But you know, going into Detroit this weekend's not going
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: to be easy and it's going to be a dogfight
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: to the end.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: Speaking of fights, you brought up that game with the
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: Reds yesterday when you have one of those deals somebody
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: gets hit by a pitch and the temper is starting
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: to flare. How much of that is Do you think
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: that that that there's just on the team where the
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: batter is getting hit, where it's more about anger of
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: loss of control by the picture versus intent or is
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: there enough history? And I wouldn't think there would be
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: a lot of history there with White Sox and Reds
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: to bring out intent involved with that. What's your take
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: on that type of scenario.
- 1:33:16Speaker 5: I wish you could heard the conversations with Roley Fingers
- 1:33:19Speaker 5: and Bart Blylevin and Steve Carlton and those guys last night,
- 1:33:25Speaker 5: because that's what people were talking about and it was
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: really awesome to hear their perspective versus Andre Dawson and
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: Jim Tomy and Mike Schmidt. I mean, that was that inning.
- 1:33:35Speaker 5: Those at match were the talk of the.
- 1:33:38Speaker 7: Tent last night.
- 1:33:38Speaker 5: And you know, certainly anytime you go around the head
- 1:33:41Speaker 5: area it can be dangerous Davis Martin is one of
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: the nicest, greatest guys in the world, and there was
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: not any intent And if you watch the pitches leading
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: up to it, you can see him rubbing his fingers
- 1:33:54Speaker 5: against his jersey because he had a big blister, and
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: you could watch in the delivery that he wasn't finishing
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: uh with this with his follow.
- 1:34:01Speaker 8: Through, And so none of it was intentional.
- 1:34:03Speaker 7: I understand.
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: You get frustrated and then Soarez gets hit by McDougall,
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: and oftentimes there's recourse to that, and the recourse comes
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: in next spring or next season when we play them.
- 1:34:13Speaker 5: But uh, there was certainly not intentional on Davis Martin's park.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: All right, Uh, Gene Watson back home from Iowa, and now,
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: what in the world is taking you to the Pacific
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: Rim next week? What in the world has you going
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: to Japan?
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: Time you signed me to Takim Orkamy, you got to
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: play off of and try to double down. So Chris
- 1:34:35Speaker 5: gets our general manager, Carlos Rodriguez, Dave Keller and myself,
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: We're gonna go over to Japan on sign it kind
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: of a good wheel tour. We're actually gonna have one
- 1:34:44Speaker 5: of the major Japanese television markets following us around while
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: we're there, literally from the minute we land till the
- 1:34:51Speaker 5: time we leave, and so it's a it's a good
- 1:34:53Speaker 5: will trip. We're gonna be able to evaluate a lot
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: of the top players over there. It's a very good
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: class of players that could be coming over here. And
- 1:35:01Speaker 5: you know, we're gonna try to piggyback on mirror coming
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: and go over there and spread the brand of the
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: Chicago White Sox and just just let it known that
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: there were we're going to be competing for the next
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: few years.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: I hope you plan to wear that big cowboy hat
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: that's ever present with you.
- 1:35:14Speaker 5: It is not going with me on the trip.
- 1:35:17Speaker 7: It's a.
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: I've gone back.
- 1:35:19Speaker 7: I can't take my boots. I'm just taking the cowboy out.
- 1:35:22Speaker 8: But we're a lot of fun anyway.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: All right, Hey, I appreciate the time safe travels across
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: the Pacific. We will try to hook up with you
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: next week and find a time when we can visit
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: with you from Japan and find how find out how
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: all of that is going. I appreciate the time, save
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: travels my friend.
- 1:35:38Speaker 7: All right, Craig, thanks so much.
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: That is Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox uh Dyersville, Iowa,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: last night Japan. Next week, we have more coming up
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: as we continue here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: the Zone. Okay, here on a fire me up Friday.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: I have to say that I just can't hear this
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: song without thinking of the late Chris Farley and that
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: epic Saturday Night Live skit with him and the late
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: Patrick Swayzee where they're trying out as chippendale dancers. And
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: to see Farley shaking that large body of his around
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: is it's just classic. I don't know if you've ever
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: seen it, but you need you need to YouTube that one.
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: If you haven't seen it, Yep, I will.
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: I've got some weekend homework now.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: Okay, all right, that's that's great. By the way, speaking
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: of weekend homework, have you seen episode two of season
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: four of Ted last night?
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: No, that's on the list as well. It's on the
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: list as well. I'm looking forward to that as well.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: Yep, yep, watched that last night, and you know, there's
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: a little more integration of his time in England now
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: that Ted, so it was back ining on. I'll just
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: leave it at that. But but you know, Linna and
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: I were talking about this because I know you were
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: a little I don't know, you tell me disappointed, not unenthused,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: maybe from the first episode that you watched of season four.
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: Would that be fair to say it.
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: Just felt like something was missing and some of that
- 1:37:20Speaker 6: was based on what I thought already, and that is.
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: Like it or not, they ended the show. They ended
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: the show. So it felt like.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: You're convinced of that that they ended the show because.
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: I saw an interview.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: I saw an interview with Jason Sedeikas right after season
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: three and they said, is that the end of the show?
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: And he said, who knows?
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: But what cliffhangers were left? What do we still need
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: to see?
- 1:37:40Speaker 6: This is fine, It's just it's the reboot of a
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: completely different ted Lasso story from what I can tell,
- 1:37:46Speaker 6: and I'm.
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: Going to give it a chance, all right.
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: And therein by the way, lies I think the key,
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: as Sark would say, the key to the drill, it's
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: not so much the story, and and I would I
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: would caution you not to spare too much mental and
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: emotional energy trying to find a connective tissue between season
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: three and season four. I would say, as many of
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: us have and what really made this show I thought
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: really good. The characterization get lost in the characters that
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: ensemble cast any great show, whether it's a sitcom or
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: a drama or I've been watching Downton Abbey with with
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: with Linda. I never saw it the first time around.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: My late wife Laurie watched it, but I didn't see
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: it the first time through. And one night I came
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: up is when I got back from Tampa from SEC Media,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: she was watching like one of the episodes in one
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: of the middle seasons of it, and I kind of
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: took a little in it, and she said, you know,
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: you'd probably liked that because we did watch The Gilded
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: Age and liked that. So I said, all right, I'll
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: tell you what, I'll give it a shot. So a
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago we started. We're in the fourth
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: We're in the fourth season now, yeah, I think, or
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: fifth season now, fourth season, I believe, but we're well
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: into it right now. But it's the ensemble cast that's
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: what makes that show. That's what makes a lot of
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: the stuff that we watch in the streaming services work
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: ensemble cast.
- 1:39:08Speaker 6: So what I would kind of come back with on
- 1:39:11Speaker 6: ted Lasso is we're kind of cleaning the slate on
- 1:39:14Speaker 6: a lot of the ensemble here with the new season,
- 1:39:17Speaker 6: from what I understand, at least in terms of the players.
- 1:39:20Speaker 6: And you know, Jamie Tart's not going to be in
- 1:39:22Speaker 6: the new season either. I thought his arc was really
- 1:39:25Speaker 6: really fun to follow. I don't know how much Roy
- 1:39:27Speaker 6: Kent we're getting. That's still a mystery to me. You've
- 1:39:30Speaker 6: seen a fair bit of him the other ones. Not
- 1:39:32Speaker 6: what you're seeing is an entirely different cast the women
- 1:39:36Speaker 6: on the team, which is and this character that you're
- 1:39:39Speaker 6: going to be introduced to that's going to be like
- 1:39:42Speaker 6: an assistant coach, is a truly unique character, like so
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: many of them are. Okay, so I think you'll like that.
- 1:39:49Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: program on thirteen under the Zone.
