Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Luxon needs a game plan to deal with Winston
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Luxon's stucky. Poor old Luxon stuck between a rock and
- 0:03Speaker 1: a hard place, really is. And it's only going to
- 0:05Speaker 1: get worse as we head into next year. Just when
- 0:08Speaker 1: he's done dealing with David Seymour and the Treaty Bill
- 0:10Speaker 1: he never wanted to go with but agreed to to
- 0:13Speaker 1: get into government that was shut down on Thursday, another
- 0:16Speaker 1: fire kicks off. He's having to hose that down too.
- 0:19Speaker 1: He's been hosing it down since last Friday. Now that's
- 0:23Speaker 1: Winston and his big noting about how to deal with Trump. Right,
- 0:26Speaker 1: the phone calls that Luxon hastily arrange to avoid being
- 0:31Speaker 1: in the House for the death of the Treaty Principal's
- 0:34Speaker 1: Bill are the same phone calls that have now started
- 0:37Speaker 1: this tussle with Winston. He just can't win either way.
- 0:41Speaker 1: There's Coalition land mines to step on. Here's the thing.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Winston first made these comments last Thursday. He said Luxon
- 0:49Speaker 1: should have called him or whatever the words were, so
- 0:52Speaker 1: he should have just picked up the phone, called them
- 0:55Speaker 1: straight away, squared it off, have it out, whatever, move on. Instead,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you're trying to announce a tourism boost at SkyCity on Monday,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and it's still dragging out. Some journalist in the press
- 1:08Speaker 1: conference yesterday even asked Luxon where the head apologized to
- 1:12Speaker 1: Winston Peters. For goodness sakes, what an outrageous question. For
- 1:17Speaker 1: the record, Luxon gave a speech basically saying he supports
- 1:20Speaker 1: free trade, big deal. We all do. Then he calls
- 1:22Speaker 1: a couple of world leaders he's met and tells them
- 1:24Speaker 1: he likes free trade, big deal. Guess what, that's fine
- 1:28Speaker 1: because he's the Prime minister. That's actually his job. He
- 1:32Speaker 1: is the boss. Winston's just feeling a bit left out
- 1:35Speaker 1: over and tonguer obviously, so he's running his mouth off.
- 1:39Speaker 1: What does Luxeon do. Does he just have a private
- 1:42Speaker 1: call and hope that Winston calms down, or does he
- 1:45Speaker 1: take a harder line in public with Winston call him out,
- 1:50Speaker 1: tell us he's only the Foreign Minister, not the Prime
- 1:53Speaker 1: Minister and he should stay in his lane. Whatever the strategy,
- 1:57Speaker 1: he needs to figure it out quick smart. As I
- 1:59Speaker 1: wrote about at the weekend, Winston's only just getting started.
- 2:03Speaker 1: There's an election to fight next year, and he'll be
- 2:06Speaker 1: unshackled from the Deputy pm rains next month. Then it's
- 2:10Speaker 1: all on for young and old and Luxon this week
- 2:13Speaker 1: has been warned for more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Listen live to News Talks at B from five am weekdays,
