- 1:35All right, folks, hail and welcome back to this week's
- 1:38episode of the reign of even ramblings podcast brought to you
- 1:43by anchor Spotify. Or wherever it is that you.
- 1:50There we go. Wherever it is that you catch
- 1:52your podcasts. So, appreciate you all coming
- 1:56back being here this week. Got some guests lined up for us
- 2:00today, who have an online and Grassroots group in the
- 2:05southwestern, Ohio area, as I recall I'm going to need to pull
- 2:12up my handy-dandy yeah, Southwest Ohio.
- 2:16So we're going to be bringing on to folks Heidi Beth and Roger
- 2:23these. These folks run the runestone
- 2:27heathens Of Southwest Ohio. It's a Facebook group.
- 2:32It's a Facebook Community but as I understand it they also have
- 2:36very regular. You know Grass Roots type stuff.
- 2:41You know they do things with people in a very Grassroots sort
- 2:47of approach on things and so if you're not on Facebook and
- 2:50you're hearing about this for the first time going to be
- 2:53talking with them today and try to get as much information
- 2:55about, you know what they're doing.
- 2:57I have been corresponding back and forth with them a bit via
- 3:02email and another really neat thing that at least Roger is
- 3:07involved with is Being a scold and finding the place in modern
- 3:13times for the scald. So he plays a liar or lie, or
- 3:19whatever the the string and kind of harp instrument that you see
- 3:21like something like that over there that you see on the, in
- 3:25the background. But yes, hoping to have some of
- 3:30his, you know, Talent displayed here on the podcast today and
- 3:35and just talk about, you know, that.
- 3:37And some else of what Doing in the Southwest Ohio area.
- 3:42So without further Ado, let's go ahead and welcome in Roger and
- 3:48Heidi Beth of the runestone heathens of Southwestern Ohio.
- 3:56This meeting is being recorded. Yeah.
- 3:59Right. Folks, will we are here and with
- 4:02Roger and Heidi Abney, who are first-time guest on the podcast.
- 4:08But as I've come to learn long time, lurkers supporters viewers
- 4:12of midgard musings and now the podcast.
- 4:14So, welcome to the show. Roger and I T.
- 4:18Thank you hail and well met. Jesse appreciate that.
- 4:22I appreciate that. So it was great.
- 4:24I actually got reached out to Bye.
- 4:27Heidi. Over an email, I guess it was
- 4:29like, you know, last week or sometime and we've kind of
- 4:32correspondent back and forth and you guys gave me a little bit of
- 4:36your background, but we were just talking a bit offline about
- 4:40our backgrounds respectively and I think that would be a neat
- 4:43place to start for the listeners and the viewers.
- 4:46If you don't mind just kind of rehashing some of that, I know
- 4:49it was mostly me telling you about what's going on up here.
- 4:52But you had some neat things to say about what you guys are
- 4:54doing in your neck of the woods, which is Southwest Ohio.
- 4:57Is that right? Yeah.
- 4:59Yeah. And we're in, we're just south
- 5:02of Dayton. So we're kind of in the
- 5:05Cincinnati Dayton area and we have well what I was mentioning
- 5:11was about to adopt two and a half years ago, we had decided
- 5:17we were ready to start trying to find others in the area who were
- 5:21Heathen that we could practice with.
- 5:23Because there wasn't, we knew some old School heathens, we
- 5:27have some members who of our local community group.
- 5:32Runestone heathens of Southwestern Ohio that have been
- 5:36practicing Heathen since the 70s and 80s.
- 5:39So, we knew these older members who had been through a lot and
- 5:44seeing the changes that also, true and Heathen re have been
- 5:48through over the years but finding people that we could get
- 5:52together with and learn from and meet there, just wasn't really
- 5:55anything. In the area.
- 5:57There's a vibrant Pagan community in the area but an
- 6:00actual northern European Germanic religious-based group.
- 6:05There wasn't really anything. So yeah.
- 6:08Yeah, we kind of started. I listen when I was I've only
- 6:15been Heathen for maybe pushing three years, but I was I was
- 6:19Norse Wiccan before that everybody laughs and turn the
- 6:23podcast off, but don't do that. Say that you Just opened up a
- 6:27follow-up question for me then, because what is even that is
- 6:30would be a question, but go ahead.
- 6:31I'll come back to it. Okay, yeah.
- 6:35So, you know, it was basically through Rune work that I became
- 6:41interested in like, full-on Heath Andre because I was
- 6:46already Norse Wiccan. It started, getting heavy into
- 6:49the runes and decided it's time to leave the wiccan ritual forms
- 6:55behind. And Take on learn this new form
- 6:59of ritual. So, I was listening to a lot of
- 7:07the Ravens call Eric shervin. Yeah.
- 7:10When I when I was first learning because he had a lot of good,
- 7:15information is great podcast. Yeah, I've had him on the show a
- 7:19couple of times and he's been a good friend of mine for years
- 7:22now, so that's great to know that you found him and that he
- 7:25has kind of helped you segue into this.
- 7:28Yeah, I was listening to his podcast and that's how I learned
- 7:32about yours and started listening to yours, too.
- 7:35Around the same time. And so he was talking, you know,
- 7:39as a video, that's titled something.
- 7:41Like what do I do if there's no heathens in my area and he gave
- 7:45this, this blueprint of, you know, start a Facebook groups,
- 7:51advertise, it start having moots, take pictures at your
- 7:55moods, it don't matter. If you're the only one there,
- 7:57take pictures post it. Let people know that you're
- 8:00there. So having Heidi and doing that
- 8:04was Major blessing because having both of us, it attracted
- 8:09a like different kinds of people, highly attracts people
- 8:13that I wouldn't attract and vice versa.
- 8:15But we followed that that prescription, that he gave
- 8:19there. And we've been fortunate that
- 8:22the gods have blessed. It's humming young and, and
- 8:26grown it. Absolutely, absolutely, we've
- 8:29been fortunate, but we've also put in a lot of work.
- 8:32We've, it's Rune Stones taken a lot of work.
- 8:35Winston heathens. It was founded in October of
- 8:392020 and yep two years we've just been doing it to you.
- 8:46I know when people find that out there like we thought you were
- 8:48around forever know I've been Pagan myself and then switch to
- 8:53Heathen a few years ago. But Pagan for 28 years.
- 8:57So, I've been walking this path for a very long time.
- 9:00But the the call of the Norse gods was when I resisted for a
- 9:04little while. Because as a woman, it can be a
- 9:08little intimidating to become Heathen.
- 9:12It's theirs, it's so masculine and it's perception.
- 9:18And yeah, that was fun things. I really set out to try and
- 9:23change and so I've done a lot of my focus on making people more
- 9:29comfortable with the feminine side of it, and I started a
- 9:36group this year for women for magic practitioners of the
- 9:40northern European Traditions. So I have a group that focuses
- 9:45specifically on feminine magic and that was so like you said,
- 9:50we tend to attract different aspects of people to the group
- 9:55and then when they get together they realize they have things in
- 9:58common and so it has been It's been a really good thing for us,
- 10:07but it is definitely work. And we also, when we started,
- 10:11that group were fortunate to have people who have been in the
- 10:13community for a long time, taking an interest in what we
- 10:16were doing. Yes.
- 10:17And that really helped to sink Our Roots into the Earth.
- 10:20Yep. So I'm sure it because like to
- 10:23your point when you were saying that some of the people that you
- 10:25knew who have been doing this you know since the 70s and 80s
- 10:29before there was the internet before there was any of you know
- 10:32all your research was in books. There was no you couldn't just
- 10:34go. Something.
- 10:35If you had a question it was it was real, you know, nose to the
- 10:38grindstone boots on the ground, real work to studying and
- 10:44learning of things. And so now you've got people
- 10:46like that that are seeing I guess a fresher newer
- 10:48perspective that it would I'm sure draw some interest and
- 10:51attention from the veterans of the industry as it were right.
- 10:56Yeah that have been around and seeing things and it's you know
- 10:59it's I don't know of course I don't have that many years under
- 11:02my belt just from living I was born.
- 11:05In 84, but just knowing the progression of heathen real.
- 11:08Like I've heard crazy things about the way it was in the 90s
- 11:11and then the is the insertion of the growth of the modern, the
- 11:16Asatru movement, you know, from like in the 70s I guess it was
- 11:21and how it kind of turned into. I always always looked at
- 11:25because when you were mentioning her before about like Norse
- 11:27Wiccan, I always thought that also true was this, was that it
- 11:31was wicked with a Norse veneer or, you know, They follow much
- 11:36of the Wicked Wheel for their celebrations.
- 11:40Their holy Tides instead of maybe leaning more towards the
- 11:44the more historical. Yeah.
- 11:46Reckoning of when holy Tides were kept keeping in mind also
- 11:50the regional differences of you know how the swedes did it
- 11:53versus how the Norwegians did it versus how the Danes would have
- 11:57done or the icelanders or, you know, all of those Folks up
- 12:01there and then you course you have Mainland Germania the the
- 12:04Ins, and all of that too. So it becomes quite the The you
- 12:11know, you you really get into the minutiae of it, all you get
- 12:14into the nitty-gritty and you're like, well, where do I fit in?
- 12:17And I know your kind of made it like, well here you can just do
- 12:19everything and be, you know, I think that was part of the
- 12:23growing pains for for early also true.
- 12:27When you go back to like the founding of the truth and things
- 12:30like that. A lot of the people were trained
- 12:34in Wicca already and so naturally, those practices are
- 12:39going Kind of color what they're doing in a more
- 12:42Reconstructionist religion. So but yeah, I mean it's
- 12:49something that scholarship evolves on and the more that you
- 12:53study reading things like HR Ellis Davidson and yeah like
- 12:58Rudolph's iMac and things like that.
- 13:00You there's plenty to put together a coherent and vibrant
- 13:06practice without having to lean on.
- 13:09Ceremonial magic and things like that, although I still use a
- 13:13hammer hollowing. So, hey, if that's what if
- 13:16that's what works for you, right?
- 13:18I've been an advocate of if it works for you, then, you know,
- 13:22your how you Heathen, how anyone heathens?
- 13:24Whether it's a individual solitary practitioner or whether
- 13:27it's in a group setting, whether it be a kindred or tribe or
- 13:30whatever, you know, your Collective is called, whatever
- 13:35works for you, you know what, it's not going to work for
- 13:37everybody. It's not, it's not That in that
- 13:40way. So and I think a lot of it to
- 13:42comes from doing things, figuring it out.
- 13:45And yep, that work. They're not at that really
- 13:47didn't work. So well, let's try something
- 13:48different and kind of being of all, you know, of allowing
- 13:51ourselves to evolve and grow through the doing of things and
- 13:56practice. Union, figuring it out as you
- 13:57go. And we've done a lot of that.
- 14:00We've, we were involved with the also true Community for quite a
- 14:04while. Probably about.
- 14:06I'm not quite a while 18 months. And we worked with them because
- 14:12we were looking for guidance on how to we in founding a
- 14:20community organization. We wanted to make sure we
- 14:23actually serve the community so we were looking for guidance on
- 14:28ways to actually do the service and the also true Community had
- 14:33some good framework. So we and we knew totally no.
- 14:38Topher weave. I've done ritual with Topher
- 14:41before. So that was a nice place to
- 14:44start. But then we kind of branched out
- 14:48because that's more for people who are online and don't have
- 14:53access to in person and we wanted in person even through
- 14:57covid. We were, we were focused on when
- 15:00covid Z over. This is what we're doing to get
- 15:02in person. Yeah.
- 15:04And so, and it was around that time, I was listening to Eric
- 15:08shervin's like We need to go this Grouse, this Grassroots
- 15:11route. Yep.
- 15:12And we're members of the truth, but we're not like ambassadors
- 15:19of the truth or anything like that.
- 15:21We just support what the truth does and the excellent
- 15:24literature. Their scholarship is really
- 15:29Beyond Compare and it was it was something where we're just
- 15:35trying to pull in the good elements of things that we see.
- 15:39And our philosophy is if your Heathen or your Asatru, or your
- 15:46Vana true, or your Roca, true, or your, or your Heathen
- 15:51friendly or Heathen light, or your Pagan and you don't have a
- 15:54home. Then our group is one that can
- 15:57provide you with access to others, as long as you're
- 16:01willing to be open and inclusive and your, your interest is in
- 16:09the Purity of creating something good, you're not looking to
- 16:13create something that's divisive.
- 16:16And that's I think one of the hardest parts when you create
- 16:20something like this is especially for those of us in
- 16:24the Heathen Community. You know, we have unfortunately,
- 16:27some some negative press from some bad apples and we, oh, you
- 16:33know, we're forced to take a stand so that we make sure that
- 16:38it's understood what our Mission is but then we don't want that
- 16:42to be the totality of what we do.
- 16:44The whole thing is religion. Yeah, and and, you know, I think
- 16:49for me, that was what finally pulled me into Heathen re after
- 16:53having a dream from Odin, that told me, you know, this is where
- 16:56you need to go. And then I was like, it, finally
- 17:00felt like I had that spiritual home, and it felt grounded in
- 17:08antiquity. Me and it felt it felt like I
- 17:12had the ability to connect with something greater than myself,
- 17:16which I had been looking for for a long time.
- 17:19And so we just want to give other people that chance to have
- 17:23that experience to. Yeah, and there's no pressure in
- 17:27runestone. I mean you, come and go and
- 17:30rice. You, hey, you grow with us or
- 17:33you go other places. It's, you know, it's just a
- 17:35place to gather resources. Yep.
- 17:37Yeah. And I love them group.
- 17:41Make make human connections. So thank you.
- 17:43I know, I love that. You're part of it.
- 17:46I appreciate the invite and or point me in the direction
- 17:49because, you know, from from your, in my initial email and
- 17:53you kind of, you know, laid it all out and introduce yourselves
- 17:57offered the. Runestone heathens group was
- 17:59like, yeah, sure. I'll check it out.
- 18:00I mean, why not? You know, and it's honestly and
- 18:03I've only been in there just for, like, the last week or so,
- 18:05and still kind of scrolling through and seeing really,
- 18:08really cool stuff. I mean Mean all of the the
- 18:10educational content, some of the people that are engaging in
- 18:13their freely sharing their own UPG, which I think is very
- 18:18important nowadays to dissimulate.
- 18:20The differences between you know Source material and UPG and to
- 18:24not discount utg. It should not discourage and you
- 18:28shouldn't be discounted. There's so much of what we
- 18:32experience day-to-day with our individual cultic practices in
- 18:36our homes, as well as when we share ritual with others, All
- 18:39right, that is largely. Or if not entirely that UPG
- 18:45moment or experience that is valid, and it makes absolute
- 18:49sense in the moment. And it, you know, like I say it
- 18:52validates what we're looking for, whether it's, you know,
- 18:55that spirituality, that that community, that that place to
- 18:58call home as it were. So I don't, you know, as long as
- 19:02it's as long as it's just, you know, we give that disclaimer
- 19:04that, hey, this is what I think and this is my UPG Let it Fly as
- 19:08what I say, you know. Yep.
- 19:11And that was another thing. That was integral in the
- 19:15foundation of the group was providing resources for people,
- 19:19because if you join Heathen groups, previously, and you
- 19:24asked a question from times, you were afraid of how it was going
- 19:29to be perceived. Whether you were going to be
- 19:31seen as ignorant, or you were going to be getting 15 different
- 19:35opinions and being an argument. And we just wanted to give
- 19:40people basic tools to start for themselves.
- 19:43You know, here's a reading list of books that we know are from
- 19:46safe sources. They have good foundational
- 19:49information, but always from there, do with it.
- 19:53Like you said, what it, what works for you?
- 19:56So I think that was intimidating was for a lot of people finding
- 20:03that resource information because if you ask Old-school
- 20:07here then how you learn how to be Heathen, they're going to
- 20:10tell you to read the poetic Edda and the sagas and you're like,
- 20:15okay, there's so much more to it than that, you know, what did I
- 20:18do? Yeah.
- 20:19But then why, you know, I go okay.
- 20:21You want me to read, you know stuff that's, you know, a
- 20:22thousand years old, that was relevant to the time and that's
- 20:27that's one thing. I think that gets lost in all of
- 20:29this is is and you guys may be can weigh in on this too from.
- 20:36So like Heidi, you For instance, you were Pagan for several
- 20:40decades. Nearly right Roger.
- 20:44You said you came into this from being as you called it Norse
- 20:48Wiccan for how many, for how long.
- 20:52Well, I've been begging all together for about six years.
- 20:55Okay, so, he then for right around 3:00 and I spent the
- 20:59first three Wiccan and okay, real study in the crap out of
- 21:04Taro as a mystery tradition. okay, so you know you've got,
- 21:08you know, collectively you've got nearly, you know, four
- 21:11decades worth of of Non-traditional religious
- 21:16beliefs or practices, right? And all of, which are rooted in
- 21:20different things and have backgrounds and different, you
- 21:22know, different areas different times.
- 21:25But my whole thing is like, you know, we are modern pagans.
- 21:31We are practicing many of us old ways in modern times.
- 21:36So you get told as a newer Pagan or as a newbie or somebody
- 21:40coming into this, do you know it.
- 21:41Get told to go back and they get I told to read all these things
- 21:45that are maybe a bit archaic or I don't have relevancy, they're
- 21:48still important because they lay the framework, they lay the
- 21:51foundation down. I said I still think some of
- 21:53these things are important but they don't have any like, where
- 21:56do you, where do you apply it? Like, why why is, why is the
- 21:59halva Mall? Such a big deal, right?
- 22:01Well, there's there's, there's words of wisdom there.
- 22:04There's things that are important for Norse, pagans to
- 22:06take away from in the Hall of them all.
- 22:07But it's like, literally just the scratching of a surface and
- 22:10why was it important? Why were those things?
- 22:12Why is it so Harp the pain in the Hall of mul to be a
- 22:15hospitable guest in the hospitable hosts.
- 22:17Well you need to understand the culture.
- 22:18You need to understand that at the time and why things like
- 22:22that were so important. So it has to be there's
- 22:24relevance to it all and without learning the culture with now,
- 22:28without getting into understanding, what World Views
- 22:32were like back then you're kind of just, you don't, you don't
- 22:35have it yet. It's hard to apply it in a
- 22:37modern context. What do you guys think, right?
- 22:40Yeah, you get. You'll get part of it.
- 22:43It, you know, cattle die Kinsmen Die.
- 22:45So one dies oneself, you'll get the things like that when if you
- 22:49read Hobb them all with no type of, okay?
- 22:52Here's what I'm looking for when I go into this kind of
- 22:55foundation, but then you'll start reading about Odin going
- 23:00into goon, Lots cave, and being there and taking the meat of
- 23:04poetry and all these esoteric names and things that you're not
- 23:08going to have any idea what's going on.
- 23:10So when it comes to like telling One brand new, who what lore to
- 23:16read? I generally say read the pro
- 23:20seta first before you start getting into the poetry because
- 23:24then at least you're going to have an idea of who's who and
- 23:26what's what. Yeah and then when it comes to
- 23:30the practical application, this is something that I and a lot of
- 23:38people have been talking about recently in our group the sagas
- 23:42were written centuries ago, thousand years ago, more than a
- 23:47thousand years ago, the they were practiced.
- 23:50These actions were practiced and we need to be writing our new
- 23:55sagas because we need to be creating the lure that will be
- 24:01helping the future Heathen to practice.
- 24:04So, it's time to apply what we've learned and take it
- 24:09forward. That's why, you know, Roger is
- 24:11so passionate about the skulls path because the scold is the
- 24:15one that's going to be telling our tails.
- 24:17The scold is the one that's going to be writing down what
- 24:20we've done and carrying it forward for the next
- 24:23Generations. Yes.
- 24:25So instead of having a dead lifeless book, that's a book of
- 24:29myth that that is interpretive, we have a living breathing faith
- 24:36that grows and changes and expands and UPG is Essential, I
- 24:42have a personal UPG regarding magic in this world today
- 24:48because I believe if you look at the Lord, there's the word are
- 24:52ghee. And a lot of people have been
- 24:54like, hinky about that word. What what does are you have to
- 24:57do my personal UPG? Because I am afraid a devotee.
- 25:02Is that it refers to the fact that magic is inherently simpler
- 25:08for women to understand we deal with life?
- 25:11If and death because we have a womb, we create it and it comes
- 25:16from us. So we are already in touch with
- 25:21magic simply by our being and a man in order to get in touch
- 25:28closer with magic needs to allow himself to become in touch with
- 25:33that feminine principle. And so, I think the word are GE
- 25:36is not so much about something bad and As it is opening an
- 25:43embracing, the feminine perspective, so that you can
- 25:47then be more in touch with your own magic because magic is not a
- 25:52hammer nailing, something into a board.
- 25:54You have to become passive magic is fluid magic.
- 25:58Has some, you have to, you can put out, but you also have to
- 26:02receive. So I look at work with women and
- 26:08helping women to bring magic back to themselves.
- 26:11Elves, as our way of bringing magic back into the greater
- 26:15world, as the women learn their magic and they become more
- 26:19comfortable with their empowerment.
- 26:21They're able to spread it out and we can make real change.
- 26:26So that's that's one of my passions.
- 26:29That's one of the things and we have great.
- 26:31Wonderful Heathen, women who've been doing it for, for the past
- 26:3540 years and years. Diana Paxson.
- 26:38Patricia Lafave owl and you know, Sorry touring.
- 26:42They have done amazing Saga, Erickson Erickson.
- 26:47Yes, amazing work for women. But we need to expand that
- 26:53because it's through the women becoming more comfortable and
- 26:56included. And he's in re that he's in re
- 26:59is going to expand, because we then can hand it down to our
- 27:01children. So it's, it's essential that we
- 27:07don't just focus on the history, but we focus on the The living
- 27:12work and how it's going to move forward.
- 27:14It's always the woman that initiates the hero in the lore.
- 27:18It is right? Yeah.
- 27:20No. I think I think that's a really
- 27:21good point and it's one of the things that seems to get or
- 27:26seems to get buried in the progress of.
- 27:30I think a lot of newer heathens because you do you see like you
- 27:32mentioned earlier? Heidi this is hyper-masculine
- 27:37demographic that is attracted to Germanic even re specifically
- 27:40because of the Viking. Things and the, you know, Odin
- 27:43and Thor and all this Macho crap, you know, and yes, like
- 27:48the men were the backbone of the society.
- 27:51All of the things that made a society function was, you know,
- 27:55largely due to The Bravery, the Courage, the tenacity, the, the
- 27:59wit, you know, of the menfolk. But please don't disregard the
- 28:03fact that at the, when the men were away doing, what men were
- 28:06doing, right? The women of the tribes, the
- 28:09women of the communities, where the ones keeping it all together
- 28:13practically and hospitably and in all other factions, you know
- 28:17what I mean? Like there's I 100% think that
- 28:21there's a need to, you know, really get in touch with the
- 28:30feminine Divine and then the power that there that is there,
- 28:34it's not just, it's not all like, you know, sunshine, In
- 28:37rainbows and sunflowers and softness no man I'm talking like
- 28:41there's Darkness there is brutality, there is there is
- 28:44scary shit that goes on that women deal with you know and and
- 28:48that we can learn from and you guys are something else just to
- 28:52say just my part it's like let's we get a kick when people say
- 28:57free as a love goddess. Yeah, well yeah.
- 29:00I mean partially, but right well, that much, you know and
- 29:06because who is Only goddess who is actually able to keep up with
- 29:11Odin. There is no God, that can have a
- 29:14discussion with Odin and put him in his place.
- 29:17Only for a guy. She is the only one who actually
- 29:21challenges him and can win and beat him at his own game.
- 29:25I mean when you look at the interplay of the two of them,
- 29:28it's exciting and fun to read the sagas that include the two
- 29:32of them together, doing things because you can see the
- 29:35calculating vulva that she is. And the way she was weaving
- 29:39those threads into the tapestry and creating her own pattern.
- 29:43Yeah, she knows she knows the things that even the Gods and
- 29:47Men don't you know she's got that vision and let's all not
- 29:52forget too that even Odin in his in his Wily wit, you know, goes
- 29:57to the Cirrus goes to the void of are four questions.
- 30:00There had to get answers to things.
- 30:02So even though he knows you know, and we know that he gets
- 30:07it was Locust Center where he gets kind of, you know, ribbed a
- 30:10bit about practicing sather, you know, and yeah, yeah.
- 30:14It's low-key. Yeah, you're gonna be hearing
- 30:17from all the island of Sam Tsui. All right.
- 30:21Yeah, yeah. And I learned a thing or two.
- 30:24So what? Right amazing, the whole like
- 30:26and then Heidi you mentioned it to like the the term energy as
- 30:29you know, I think it's only recently gotten any sort of
- 30:33derogatory or negative connotations because of Some of
- 30:38the backwards progression. It's not even progression.
- 30:41It's not an advancement. But us as a species us as
- 30:44humans, we've regressed, we haven't progressed.
- 30:47We've regressed in things and seeing men being vulnerable or
- 30:51men having, you know, effeminate ways or whatever.
- 30:54Like that's not what LG means. It's not what it ever meant, at
- 30:58least not from what I was understanding and some Scholars
- 31:02have actually gone into that. An illogical roots of that word
- 31:07and it's like, they didn't look, as, you know, men that were, you
- 31:12know, homosexual or gay, or anything like that, that wasn't.
- 31:16Taboo, like kind of just happened.
- 31:18It was it just you know, part of society is the stigma, this
- 31:23Dogma whatever. The stigma of it has really been
- 31:26the problem with us as a modern species as modern humanity and
- 31:29way we've regressed in this way to put negative connotations of.
- 31:34And that's why I think it's great that you guys have a
- 31:36community that is you know inclusive because you know
- 31:40you've been paying now for how many years.
- 31:41Heidi. I mean and you to Roger at least
- 31:45here In Middle Tennessee, Are pagan Community is very
- 31:48colorful. We have all types of people
- 31:51from, you know, The LGBT cues communities and we want people
- 31:58to feel welcome and feel safe and in what we do and not to be
- 32:02like, oh no, it's the Vikings doing the Viking thing again and
- 32:05wearing Furs. And, you know, bearded rough
- 32:08men, that scream and holler, Odin Thor.
- 32:10I do not write. That can be, that's fun.
- 32:24There's a lot has a place practice and develop self
- 32:30development. That goes on then just drinking
- 32:33Mead and screaming god names. Right?
- 32:37Yeah. I mean, it's, you know, it's the
- 32:40the Bro. Statues are the ones that I call
- 32:42those types. You know where that's, you know,
- 32:44till Valhalla this and that like okay whatever.
- 32:48Yeah, I don't want to go to Valhalla.
- 32:53For me because I don't want to get up every day and have to
- 32:55keep fighting. I want to rest.
- 32:59When we go visit, hell, and and have a have a break Nikki and I
- 33:03will know whether very well by then anyway, because you can't
- 33:07do. You can't do magic work in
- 33:09modern day. You can't do Volvo work without
- 33:11working with hello. So not devolve word.
- 33:14Yeah, I I've actually had a very recent encounter with hell from
- 33:21attending a loan. our group in our area called The Raven, Moon
- 33:27Hearth, there a Germanic Pagan group in the Nashville area and
- 33:34every year they have an open event called Shadow Moot and it
- 33:39usually Falls around the mid October time frame and it quite
- 33:47often corresponds to the historical timing of winter
- 33:50nights motivator Netter, you know, so so it kind of it's a
- 33:54celebration of that it's their version of winter nights but
- 33:59they have a held low at the in the evening time and this this
- 34:06past Year's hell boat was Life-changing, you know, when
- 34:10you when you, when you go to this virtual space and, you
- 34:14know, see and I'm just, you know, going to speak for myself,
- 34:18just seeing what at one point in time, where trees, you know, the
- 34:23wood line transform and take on this Royal, I don't know chamber
- 34:31of of huts and homes and stuff and just the way it all changed
- 34:34and you like you're literally in hell.
- 34:36In the Hall of hell, you know I mean like in he'll Hane.
- 34:41Puts a lot of things. Put a lot of things in
- 34:42perspective for me and then my spirituality and how I am
- 34:46advancing as a heathen you know, because I didn't come into this
- 34:49path and you know, I don't think any of us have And you know,
- 34:54with the with the with the same approaches that we have now back
- 34:57then you know however many years ago it was or however long ago,
- 35:01it was we're not the same pagans or not, the same heathens,
- 35:05whatever term you want to put it to it.
- 35:07You know we're not the same people that we were back then
- 35:09we're not practicing the same way as we did back then either.
- 35:12At least I'm not no no change. I practices transform totally
- 35:19yeah yeah that we're very complimentary.
- 35:23He is when he started looking into paganism.
- 35:29He looked at it from a very ceremonial Magic, High magic
- 35:32perspective and I have been the hippie one who has always been
- 35:38like, okay, I'm going to cast a spell here, I'ma sit my butt
- 35:41down on the ground, and my circle is my finger.
- 35:44And here we go. So we have this good balance
- 35:48between us because he's able to make things feel more whole Lee
- 35:53and more present, because of the ceremony that he can sometimes
- 35:59create, and I'm able to pull him down and let him realize we
- 36:02don't need any of that all the time.
- 36:04Yeah, sometimes. All we need is just sitting down
- 36:08and, and touching the Earth and I've moved into with that kind
- 36:12of idea. Working magical charms, with,
- 36:18with Calder in Verses that I've wrote in the in the Norse M.
- 36:26So for me, this log, the old, the hot butter Galt or a log.
- 36:30So I've taught myself how to write English English
- 36:35alliterative poetry in those meters.
- 36:38So, wow. Well, needing all of the
- 36:40ceremony anymore for like a quick hollowing or something to
- 36:45change your mindset about just icky Darkness, that's coming up
- 36:50within you and things like that. So, So I'd like to talk about
- 36:56that then Roger specifically with your skaldak work, you
- 37:02know, like or your skaldak practice is learning the liar
- 37:05writing Modern English in, you know, in Poetic meters that are
- 37:13outdated for all intents and purposes.
- 37:15You know, where did that starts? How did how did you?
- 37:20Yeah. So how I've kind of arrived at
- 37:24it. Well, the first thing that got
- 37:26me interested in like the alliterative style of Germanic
- 37:31poetry was reading books by their off Gunderson.
- 37:36And the way that he would reply in alliteration right now, I'm
- 37:41reading rheingold. It's his fictional series,
- 37:45that's based in the, in the world of The Saga of the
- 37:48volson's and a lot of that alliteration and poetry's there.
- 37:52And he's Really good. So rest in peace, Nightwolf.
- 37:57But so I became interested. They're so, so I started writing
- 38:02that what I'm really in M, but it was a literation.
- 38:07Well, really, when I became inspired reading his work, I
- 38:11began to write my own poetry in alliterative meter or not.
- 38:15No, not alliterative M, just the literation, but I met a
- 38:21gentleman through Scott Shell. He's a friend of the group name
- 38:27is, is erequest coat and he's got a website called the Eagles.
- 38:34Mead, I think, is what it's called, or like the eagles gift
- 38:39or something like that, but he has been doing this writing
- 38:44English poetry in in these old Norse M for a long time since
- 38:51like twenty, thirteen or fourteen.
- 38:53So I took his work and I took some of my favorite poetic Edda
- 39:00translations. Mainly I like Bellows out of
- 39:03that's the that's the poetic one that I like to go to and and
- 39:09then looked at like Crawford because Jackson Crawford's got
- 39:12some really good videos on the old Norse M.
- 39:16And he's actually got some where he shows you how to write
- 39:19English poetry in Old Norse or in the Old Norse.
- 39:23M. So I just took those three
- 39:26resources and I studied them. I looked at.
- 39:30Okay, so this is, this is for need this log.
- 39:33So, this is how many syllables a half line has, this is how many
- 39:38like a, like, a, a key line of beeline counting syllables and
- 39:43seeing kind of, where the English M should kind of fall in
- 39:48between. So, for instance, like a for
- 39:51neat, this log line, Issued have an English anywhere from about
- 39:57five to seven syllables. Now, doing it in English is not
- 40:02the same as originally in Old Norse because the word order and
- 40:06all of that kind of thing. But there's a difference between
- 40:11like when I when I know I, when I've wrote something and I'm
- 40:14like, that's a good line and I write something and it's like
- 40:17that line needs work because it needs to sound good when you
- 40:21speak it out loud. So that's kind of and and then
- 40:25also like a lot of memorization of the things that I write and
- 40:29also memorization of actual Old Norse.
- 40:35And I'm getting into Old English now and lots of memorization of,
- 40:40you know, verses from the poetic Edda and figuring out how to how
- 40:45to use that ritually though. And and last thing on this.
- 40:53Take like what I earn our selves it does.
- 40:55And this is this was my inspiration for learning to play
- 40:57liar. Taketake like what he does, and
- 41:01bring that to the Hearth level. So, meaning, like, in in the
- 41:07home with people, right? Yes.
- 41:09Yeah. In the, in the Kindred group,
- 41:12yeah. Be like, oh yeah, because like,
- 41:16you are like you before that we started recording.
- 41:19You were talking about how it's it's like creating a family.
- 41:23That's how our Kinder is for us. Our Kindred is very small and
- 41:28it's chosen family. Its people that we share things
- 41:32with that. Are are on a deeper level than
- 41:37what we would do in public like we've, we've been blessed.
- 41:41Our Kindred has had the opportunity to do the closing
- 41:44ritual for the past two years for the date and Pagan pride.
- 41:49And so we've had an opportunity to show other pagans who aren't
- 41:55Heathen, what a heathen bloat, kind of looks like, but, you
- 42:00know, when you get it down to the Hearth level when you're
- 42:03doing it on your Kindred level, it so much.
- 42:05Intimate and so many more things can happen.
- 42:09So he's, he's done some beautiful work with his writing
- 42:15though. He's got a real gift.
- 42:18From what I've seen in the runestone heathens group.
- 42:21Because I know Roger you've shared some poems or reciting is
- 42:27of things and I believe it was Old English, you were?
- 42:30Yeah, I was what again everybody that listens and watches, you
- 42:36know, the group is going to be linked.
- 42:40So you may be getting some requests to join just to be able
- 42:42to hear Roger stuff. Maybe I hope that's all right
- 42:45because I want people to experience it as well, I think.
- 42:48It's I think it's amazing. He has a he does have a great
- 42:50gift. He has a wonderful talent that
- 42:52needs to be shared with the world.
- 42:56But yeah, II, you know, I've been asked actually somebody
- 43:00here in our area who's infatuated with the role of the
- 43:05scold. And you know, for people that
- 43:10don't know and Roger since this is kind of, you know, in your
- 43:13wheelhouse, maybe you can talk a bit to it, my recollection of
- 43:16the role of the scholar at You know, medieval and like the
- 43:20Viking agent in those times was they were pretty damn important
- 43:24to the to the point that they would be, you know, invited into
- 43:28Royal happenings like they had a very prominent place in society
- 43:33because they were the storytellers.
- 43:34They were the ones that in a time where people weren't very
- 43:37literate to write down things and whatnot.
- 43:39They were the people that could relay and tell You know, stories
- 43:45of Heroes and kings, and all this stuff.
- 43:47So, you know, for the Kings to have a scald in their Court was
- 43:51like, Check this out, you know, like it was pretty, pretty big
- 43:54deal, right? Yeah, they would they would
- 43:57definitely have been on the payroll, that, that, that's,
- 44:02that's why I King is called a giver of rings.
- 44:05He has to reward is Triton's and he rewards us called as well.
- 44:08But but yeah, take take for example, the original skull ragi
- 44:16the god brog E-boat assassin ragi in Godly the old, you know.
- 44:21It said that he was Part of Ragnar Lothbrok says revenue and
- 44:24was retinue and and was writing poetry.
- 44:29He liked his. I think it's like 12 versus Rock
- 44:32nose. Throat that he had written.
- 44:35So yeah. As a scald could could like make
- 44:43you more than you are and he could also trust you.
- 44:46There are were there were also a handful of female skulls.
- 44:52Out there to one that comes to mind her name was Yoda and so
- 44:58yeah that the thus cultic kind of position in the retinue was
- 45:05one of high honor he sat close to the king and the hall.
- 45:10So he had an honored seat. Yeah yeah.
- 45:14It's now also though I think that comes from an older and
- 45:22older Position. So if you've read Beowulf, you
- 45:26come across work unferth challenges Beowulf and third and
- 45:31fourth is crop Gars fool right now, that's kind of what
- 45:37survives in the role of authorial in our modern lore or
- 45:42if you know and the Lord that we've got, but I think that
- 45:45comes from an older. ritual oratory position where maybe
- 45:53like lineages and deeds would have been recited ritually and
- 46:00this Thule position may have been the counterpart to the male
- 46:05vulva or the female vote rather really that's an interesting
- 46:10take I've never heard the comparison between fool and like
- 46:15which made I've always looked as I've always looked at the Thule
- 46:19as being sort of kind of like a regulator or enforcer to
- 46:26moodle's as it were, you know, kind of like, hey don't don't
- 46:29speak such a big game that you can back it up and oh by the
- 46:31way, I'm going to make sure that everybody knows was you know,
- 46:36sorry, go ahead. Yeah.
- 46:40Yeah seems that the Thule like In Beowulf, in particular, he
- 46:47said the things that the King was probably thinking, so that
- 46:52way the keying didn't have to say it and possibly like break
- 46:58Griff. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:00At that point, right? Um, so you know, that that could
- 47:05have even I could I could now this is UPG here.
- 47:08We'll put this out there but I could I could definitely see how
- 47:13a Thule could serve in that. A troll in challenging people
- 47:17that come to the hall but also being a type of a sage that the
- 47:23king would go to for read. I could easily see that, okay?
- 47:28So attracts a bit actually, you know, because again, one of the
- 47:32things that would happen and we're talking, you know,
- 47:37Specifically you know so you mentioned Beowulf you know and
- 47:39and that is a Saxon that's like that's one of like the big ones
- 47:43in terms of lore and then sagas especially for Mainland Germanic
- 47:47heathens you know folks that are maybe following a more
- 47:51Anglo-Saxon approach to to Henry I think is that the the tribal
- 47:57structure or the way that groups are formed quite often in Saxon.
- 48:03Heathen, groups are very warband like so.
- 48:07Have a, they have their, you know, they have their dryden's.
- 48:10They have their pools, they have, you know, this and then in
- 48:13one of the things that happens that we read about in Beowulf.
- 48:15That is a primary source for understanding sambal, is the the
- 48:22the giving of baits or boasts. And, and Oaths is not as it's
- 48:29more than just a promise. It's not just, I promised to do
- 48:31XYZ, it's the fact that now everybody here is bound.
- 48:37By this oath and is responsible in a way because our luck is on
- 48:40the line and all of these. Pretty heavy-duty things that a
- 48:46fool is absolutely responsible for it because, you know, here
- 48:50you got, you know, bail will come here, talking about.
- 48:52I'm going to kill Grendel and then do a second.
- 48:54Now, big guy, you know, what about this?
- 48:55The thing out of the other that you did or didn't do you know,
- 48:57you know, is you are you biting off more than you can chew and
- 49:00he challenges the Boast as it were of what you're going to do.
- 49:06The Thor, make sure no miasma crap, makes it into their, The
- 49:11Well of their sambal. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:14So in that way, understanding the metaphysical workings of
- 49:19sambal, right? Why sambal is done a certain
- 49:21way. Who has the the positions that
- 49:24they have, who does what they do.
- 49:26Why they do it understanding all that and going back to your
- 49:30analysis of the role of the Thule and in What he is
- 49:35responsible for and having that sort of like, you say, you like
- 49:38a sage or see her kind of roll it tracks.
- 49:41It makes logical sense to me. I think we could deduce that
- 49:46that probably is maybe more than U PG, but we can get into the
- 49:51semantics of it. I had a later.
- 49:52Well, you know, you know, I want to because I don't know for
- 49:58sure. It seems logical.
- 50:00I've never read and in like You know Stephen Pauling ton or
- 50:05anything like that but you know it makes sense.
- 50:07There's a lot of conjecture educated she's conjecture that
- 50:12probably was so that we have to go with if we're gonna
- 50:16reconstruct this thing as fully as we can, right?
- 50:20Yeah. And it goes back to I think
- 50:22again the type of you know, Heathen re that were talking
- 50:25about because It's such a it's such a regional, it's such a
- 50:31region. It was at least such a
- 50:32regionally focused thing, you know.
- 50:34Yeah. We're talking northern Europe as
- 50:35a generalized term, but you got the mainland and then you've got
- 50:41Scandinavia where to choose wherever.
- 50:43I mean like they got all that stuff from the mainland I think
- 50:47is where it originated. I mean the Germanic tribes were
- 50:49there and then things kind of went North from there and they
- 50:54had, you know, yes they had their own Living Traditions, the
- 50:56the Swedish had The genus people, the icelanders had their
- 50:59indigenous people. The Sami, of course in the in
- 51:02Sweden, but where did it? Where did it originate from?
- 51:06Where did where did so much of what we have?
- 51:09Kind of stem from and then, where did it, where did it
- 51:15Blossom? You know, when it reached Tyson,
- 51:17when it reached Denmark, when it reached Sweden, when it reached,
- 51:19all these places, you know, the swedes did things a little bit
- 51:21different than the Norwegians did.
- 51:23Then the Danes did then. And everybody did, you know,
- 51:26eventually the fans did their own thing entirely?
- 51:30Oh, yeah. Oh yeah.
- 51:31Oh yeah. And the Finish which has I love
- 51:46that, who goes pretty close to four.
- 51:48Yeah, yeah. I'm not too close into, like,
- 51:53the, the Finish lure, or that side of things.
- 51:57But I've heard that there's debate, whether or not there
- 52:01they were considered even like a part of the Scandinavian.
- 52:06Their language was not Indo-European, right?
- 52:11It's kind of, yeah, there are their own indigenous people.
- 52:14Yeah. Yeah, it did their own stuff
- 52:17conjecture. But, yeah, which, I mean, it
- 52:20does it goes, It goes back to what we're doing now.
- 52:23It's, you know, I've said it multiple times, I'll say it
- 52:26again, that, you know what is tradition, right?
- 52:28It's not shouldn't be. At least the worship of the
- 52:31ashes. It should be the preservation of
- 52:33fire. So there's these coals that are
- 52:35burning These Embers that are glowing that need to be soaked
- 52:42and New Life needs to be breathe into it and that's what we as
- 52:46modern Heathen should be doing. Now is yes, we know certain
- 52:49things about the past but the past was the past and so let's
- 52:53do things now that are Heidi. I think you mentioned it before,
- 52:59you know, writing our own sagas or telling our own stories and
- 53:03creating our own Traditions to be lived.
- 53:06Here. And now for the future for the
- 53:09next Generations, you know, something that they can sink
- 53:13their teeth into and practically apply.
- 53:18Yeah, that's exactly it. Can I say it better?
- 53:23The only way to continue this, the only way to perpetuate it is
- 53:26to keep it alive and glowing. I like that idea of the coals
- 53:30burning, keeping the coals burn you.
- 53:32How did you say that again? We're not.
- 53:36Serving. That's the way I've said it.
- 53:38Is that tradition is not the worship of Ashes.
- 53:41It's the preservation of fire nice.
- 53:47So there you go. Put that into your skull dick M
- 53:49and then maybe write a song about that.
- 53:51Maybe I don't know, like it's become a memorial.
- 53:56Now speak it into existence, put it, put it on the wire as it
- 54:01were He's already working on an Epic Journey.
- 54:11This journey. Yeah.
- 54:13So tune in. That's too many verses to
- 54:16memorize. Do you have a platform that,
- 54:21like, for your music and for your scold at work?
- 54:23Roger, like Is there anywhere that you know, or will it be?
- 54:28I mean because again I get I get excited about stuff like this
- 54:30because for some folks that are maybe interested or that have a
- 54:34bug that they're trying to be, you know what I'm saying?
- 54:37Like I said there's a guy here locally who's expressed an
- 54:40interest in wanting to kind of be a part of us.
- 54:42He's like, do you guys have room for a scold?
- 54:44I'm like, I don't know. Make sure why not like, but what
- 54:47does he even like? What do you mean by that?
- 54:49You know, are you going to be, you know, sitting writing songs?
- 54:52Are you going to be, you know? Scribing down stories, are you
- 54:55going to be keeping a log of stuff?
- 54:57Like what's the, what's the, what do you think?
- 55:00The skulls position is in modern times and how does it?
- 55:04It's a mix. It's a mix of all what you said.
- 55:07I mean for, and in every individual scold is going to
- 55:11have a, an individual expression of that.
- 55:15So as we as we progress and do things like, we just built this
- 55:21big shelter that we can do an outdoor.
- 55:24You'll event in and stay warm and have fire that keeps us warm
- 55:28and stuff like that. So, you know, something that I
- 55:33could could do potentially is write a verse about the building
- 55:36of the shelter and then recite that verse in Praise of the
- 55:40group. When we were there on you'll
- 55:42that's an example of how of how that could work within context
- 55:48of what we're doing now. But then also, you know, I
- 55:53wanted, To learn how to play an old instrument.
- 55:56So I've been working on that for a year and I've gotten pretty
- 56:00decent at it. I still got a long way to go.
- 56:02There's people who are way better than me but, you know, I
- 56:06I wouldn't be kadmon in the hall.
- 56:08If the, if the lyre was passed to me, I wouldn't run away.
- 56:12You know, you've only learned this Talent the skill within the
- 56:17year. Oh, year, and some change, maybe
- 56:21that's impressive. It's not even been.
- 56:24Either you're really since he started fully devoting time to
- 56:28it, it was after you will last year that he really started
- 56:32putting time into it. And he has talked about
- 56:36developing similar to my group, with women with magic.
- 56:40He would like to develop a group of people genderless who are
- 56:46involved in skaldak work, because he feels like, that's,
- 56:50I'm speaking for yeah, because you aren't going to say it out
- 56:54loud. Ah but he feels like it's part
- 56:56of his calling as to help perpetuate that for future.
- 56:59So yeah, your idea of a place to have all that housed is a good
- 57:04one that I think we need to think about right now, it's all
- 57:07on runestone. Yeah, I just goes in the
- 57:09runestone and I sometimes post what I'm doing in the Trove.
- 57:13Yeah, well, I would be definitely interested in keeping
- 57:17track of it, as much as you're willing to share excited to hear
- 57:21and see it grow. But from what I was little, you
- 57:25shared what I have seen, its I'm itchin for more.
- 57:29Yeah. All right.
- 57:30Well, it sounds great. I mean, it's to give you an
- 57:33example that right now because I got to warm up and stuff and
- 57:39things. Got a little, got a limber up,
- 57:40them limbs, right thing, I'm digit.
- 57:42I really have not touched it today.
- 57:44So all all speak a verse that I wrote.
- 57:48Now I'm gonna make it clear. This is not in any type of Old
- 57:53Norse. M.
- 57:54This is just, it's basically inspired by Spoken Word.
- 57:59So all right, here we go. Mead Halls, Minstrel, Mighty
- 58:07word, mixer boden's, beer, bear, bore of blood and of spit hide
- 58:12write-ins dearest danglars through in Laurel days and
- 58:17highest halls in the world with worms and woven walls there.
- 58:21Stood, the Strummer of the tree of strings stories.
- 58:24He told this called he was called, let us not fall from the
- 58:28highest Hall of hail dropped nor lose the lure of Lera.
- 58:32So-called I am to the cunning craftiness Often carry the staff
- 58:36of the wordsmiths work, berserk snow more nor Bernie shirts, but
- 58:40the blood Finch feeds on dirt frosted flesh.
- 58:44No Tales are told to kingly courts but the Clans who the
- 58:46call of a Seer here Brew, I the beer of Bowden and poor for the
- 58:51pleasure of the people of Sid long, may they live give do I
- 58:55the prize of gout and with pleasure?
- 58:58I pour a measure of the mightiest need two men and women
- 59:00who would well receive the water of that.
- 59:02Well, let brag, he's You a boon to bars and the beer of boiling,
- 59:07big fear flow. I exhale, bear.
- 59:10I'm called, it's called indeed and sick with scores of the lure
- 59:14of lowther. A life with a hell of a singer.
- 59:17I am. This boy is bound to Boden.
- 59:20So, Nando there a year, the Eagles me from an oath links
- 59:23horn, scold. I am called in a singer of songs
- 59:27long forgotten, but never lost hail hail.
- 59:32Wow, wow, yeah, man. You definitely captured my
- 59:36attention. That was impressive in the fact
- 59:39that you just recite in like you've put a lot of work into
- 59:42that. I'm sure.
- 59:42And you just have it ready to recite basically on the on a
- 59:48whim. Yeah, memorize on the wind and
- 59:51that's that's an impressive skill as well.
- 59:53I mean, just with everything else that we've got going on in
- 59:56our day-to-day lives to have the, the mental fortitude of
- 1:00:00retaining and memorizing, the verses And I like how, cuz I
- 1:00:06mean at the beginning, especially it seems like you set
- 1:00:08the tone of this poem through the use of Kennings, which I
- 1:00:15think is another thing that is important in at least being a
- 1:00:19good skull, right? Is, is being able to describe
- 1:00:22something in ways that, you know, will, you can call me, you
- 1:00:27know, whatever. It's you know.
- 1:00:30Golden Tears or something. I mean, like, you know, I'm
- 1:00:32terrible at it, but you get one. Golden, Brew the be sweat,
- 1:00:37right? Right, right, right.
- 1:00:41Don't get me going. Stir It Up Man.
- 1:00:47Stirred up. That was great.
- 1:00:51How long did it take you to come up with that?
- 1:00:54That one just right now like I'm, I'm not kidding.
- 1:01:00No, no, no, no. He's like, well, that took me
- 1:01:03like I just spotted out right now.
- 1:01:05That was it. No, I'm not the Heathen him in
- 1:01:09them. But basically that one in
- 1:01:16particular a day, a day, I had ran across something on YouTube
- 1:01:22where somebody was doing something.
- 1:01:23And similar to this sum rule obscure Channel, mainly a
- 1:01:27Channel about firefighting, but then there's these couple of
- 1:01:30videos of him doing skaldak stuff.
- 1:01:32And it was this spoken word thing that he done, not really
- 1:01:36in m, just kind of, you know, were jam on the microphone in
- 1:01:41the coffee shop kind of thing and I don't like, I could do
- 1:01:44that. So so I wrote that, and actually
- 1:01:49basically committed it to memory the same day to ya.
- 1:01:53So I become really, honestly the woad begins to flow, and I
- 1:02:00become a man obsessed. So, so for people that maybe
- 1:02:04don't know when you say, the, when the woad begins to flow,
- 1:02:07what are you, what are you talking about?
- 1:02:08Like, an you can you elaborate on that for people that are
- 1:02:10like, was he talking about here? That is like the, okay?
- 1:02:16So that's like that's like on Sue's.
- 1:02:19It's the inspiration of Odin or Or I would say in my UPG bra GE,
- 1:02:26it's the the madness that causes somebody to either go crazy and
- 1:02:33self-destruct or commit commit, Deeds of great Valor and warfare
- 1:02:40wogan is one of those things that is is channeled into
- 1:02:44different types of creation. That's the thing about woad is
- 1:02:50that if there's not an outlet, for it can show up.
- 1:02:53As anger and rage. But, but yeah.
- 1:02:58The thing is aching. It learning how to crank it down
- 1:03:02from an 11 to about a six or seven and work with it.
- 1:03:07I have like yeah, yeah exactly that's what I was going to get
- 1:03:13to is is like the older, the the divine inspiration and how
- 1:03:20things like that are. Like where that inspiration
- 1:03:25comes from her how I guess triggered, could be a word,
- 1:03:29right? Because I have experienced
- 1:03:33myself and I am by no means comparing. what I've done to the
- 1:03:38likes of us called you or others because to be honest, like, what
- 1:03:43you did was very impressive but there are times when Occasions.
- 1:03:54Activities can really Trigger or stimulate, maybe is a better
- 1:03:58word because I think stimulate is probably the better word.
- 1:04:00What stimulates us to I don't know exude this sort of woad as
- 1:04:05you say, right? Like in to be this sort of
- 1:04:07thing. Different elements.
- 1:04:09Different conditions can stimulate us and I've been I've
- 1:04:13been stimulated in a way and I'll just find myself sitting
- 1:04:15there sometimes. Just like in my mind, like
- 1:04:18almost Whispering or or speaking out loud.
- 1:04:22What to what some in the room with me might perceive as like,
- 1:04:28He's insane, he's over here just like we've ever, you know,
- 1:04:32uttering things of seemingly innate battle, but there's
- 1:04:37there's purpose to it. There.
- 1:04:38There's, it's almost like you're, you're getting these.
- 1:04:41I don't know if it's, if it's been this way for you but for me
- 1:04:43it's in like certain flashes of words or scenarios or stories or
- 1:04:49things and you just like I got to I got to express and I got to
- 1:04:51put it out there and it becomes kind of like a run-on sentence
- 1:04:56of A story that starts somewhere and somewhere else.
- 1:05:00Like, you know, you just go down this sneaky windy path of
- 1:05:04wherever and then it becomes this thing.
- 1:05:08She knows I can identify with that exact acutely.
- 1:05:11Absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:05:13One of the things that I do is like to practice, especially
- 1:05:19what I've committed to memory, because I found that if you
- 1:05:21don't recite it here and there are these things that you work
- 1:05:25very hard to commit to memory, you'll Forget it.
- 1:05:28So, so, one of the things I do is people think I'm a Madman,
- 1:05:34but I'm driving down the road, I am on the phone or nothing.
- 1:05:36I'm in my little old beat-up car and I'm just talking, you know,
- 1:05:41and but, but yes, it is. It just starts with an idea or
- 1:06:00like I wrote a couple of verses in gold or log about a month
- 1:06:05ago, for a hollowing that we wanted to do because our ritual
- 1:06:10was based on on a need fire and this, we want this ritual to be
- 1:06:15a ride of cleansing and hollowing.
- 1:06:17So to put on top of Gaul Durant, on top of our go to these
- 1:06:21hollowing ritual, I wrote this verse to speak for the hollowing
- 1:06:25to, so you Take an idea, maybe a maybe a canning or something
- 1:06:30comes and then it just all gets kind of fleshed out around that
- 1:06:34so well. So there's only want one thing.
- 1:06:39Like if you're going to pursue this skaldak path, you have to
- 1:06:43be in the lore. You have to have that stuff
- 1:06:47stirring in your subconscious for you, to be able to pull it
- 1:06:51out, and come up with with things that people are going to
- 1:06:54like. And that's going to be effective
- 1:06:57to Two. So you have to have your roots
- 1:07:01deep in the in that in that aspect of things.
- 1:07:04And that's a good that's a good point to make and also wanted to
- 1:07:08explore with you real quickly. The, you know, you have a
- 1:07:12background in as you mentioned earlier and we really didn't
- 1:07:15even approach this in depth Norse Wiccan or Norse Wicca.
- 1:07:19But the but the higher magic element, I think that Heidi
- 1:07:22alluded to that. You found yourself in and now
- 1:07:26you're in this. Skaldak path.
- 1:07:30There's there's, there's a reason that it's called
- 1:07:33spelling. I mean, you, we are weaving
- 1:07:35words even through speech, but especially in, I think song or
- 1:07:40in any of scold, it works like this.
- 1:07:42This is its captivating, its mesmerizing, it's enchanting.
- 1:07:46Its casting of spells. We are you are when you put
- 1:07:50letters together and create words you are spelling, right?
- 1:07:52But there's a reason why it's called that we are literally
- 1:07:56casting spells You are capturing the attention of people that
- 1:08:02have never seen your face in person, through auditory means
- 1:08:06and through all these other ways and it's quite it's magical.
- 1:08:09It's literally magical. Yeah.
- 1:08:12Yeah, Golder music verse song. All of it.
- 1:08:18It changes your your normal Consciousness into something
- 1:08:22else. Therefore, it's magic fun.
- 1:08:25And when you understand the very basics of matter, Magic stuff
- 1:08:28like this. Yeah.
- 1:08:30I mean I've seen instant Ramen the jaw harp, you're pretty good
- 1:08:34at that stuff man. You're a you're a damn good
- 1:08:36drummer but it's in the same sort of way and thank you by the
- 1:08:40way. I appreciate that.
- 1:08:41I, you know, in and I think maybe in a similar way and
- 1:08:44that's why maybe I can relate to what you're saying in terms of
- 1:08:49that altered state of consciousness.
- 1:08:51That something like, What's again, seems just like insane,
- 1:08:55Babble, or 1/8 Babble of whatever, you know, you could
- 1:08:58just be reciting words, rhyming, Kennings, whatever the thing
- 1:09:01that you're doing drumming, right?
- 1:09:03It's this rhythmic. Thing that takes you from, I'm
- 1:09:09here. And now I'm there, and I'm
- 1:09:12going, and I'm going places, and I'm traveling, I'm going outside
- 1:09:16of myself to explore things, and it's a, you know, if anything, I
- 1:09:22think to your point earlier as you were talking about like, you
- 1:09:24know, the scold, the fool, the The Seer, and how they're all
- 1:09:28connected. I'm the lines.
- 1:09:30I'm starting to connect the dots with it all because it's For
- 1:09:34some it might just be a song. Oh it sounds great.
- 1:09:36That's very inspiring. Right?
- 1:09:38For others. Who have Gone to other places
- 1:09:43and have used these types of, you know, methods to get there.
- 1:09:50There's more to it than just than just that.
- 1:09:53I think, you know. Yeah, well, Heidi, you seeing
- 1:09:58all the time in your work so you can definitely.
- 1:10:02Oh, yeah. But it's, it's not, it's, I
- 1:10:07think, any of us who have the ability to have honed, Ability
- 1:10:13to enter an altered state of consciousness have done.
- 1:10:17So, through different means for me, Iraq.
- 1:10:19I literally when I'm, when I'm working up toward a trance, I'm
- 1:10:24rocking as I'm doing it. And then I start singing, But
- 1:10:28the rocking is the rhythmic part of it for me, that's what really
- 1:10:32gets me started. So I think you all.
- 1:10:35It's like you said, in the very beginning, it is how it works
- 1:10:39for you. You have you are I taught the
- 1:10:43basic premise Diana Paxton has an amazing book called
- 1:10:46transportation, and it gives you the basic keys on how to get to
- 1:10:53a trance state. But she continually says,
- 1:10:57customize this for yourself as you're going through the X.
- 1:11:01And, and that's what I teach my women, as you're going through
- 1:11:04the exercises, you're learning, but make sure that you
- 1:11:10understand, you don't have to stay.
- 1:11:12Rigidly with the way this is. And I tell them all the time.
- 1:11:15It's muscle memory. You're just building up mental
- 1:11:17muscle memory, you repeating these steps again and again, so
- 1:11:20that it becomes something that you don't even have to think
- 1:11:22about anymore. But that's that's what you guys
- 1:11:26when you're doing, when you're doing your recitations, it's all
- 1:11:31to help us get into that altered state and a finely crafted bloat
- 1:11:37is the same kind of thing because you're weaving the
- 1:11:40pieces together. Weather so that you end up with
- 1:11:44an ability to have everyone have an altered experience and when
- 1:11:49it happens it's just chillingly. Amazing.
- 1:11:54Yeah. But it doesn't happen every time
- 1:11:55and that's okay to do. Yeah.
- 1:11:57It's but when it was, when it water clicks when it man, I
- 1:12:01really like you said, with the hell, yes, you guys should come
- 1:12:10and I think where you guys they're at if you're you said
- 1:12:14south of Dayton Cincinnati yes and that area yeah there was a
- 1:12:19fellow that came from I don't remember exactly where but he
- 1:12:24had like a six to eight hour drive from Ohio somewhere and
- 1:12:27came for the weekend because they have at least in the past
- 1:12:31you know they've made it a camping event you know so people
- 1:12:34come and it's you know it's on property of one of the Hearth
- 1:12:40members Who interesting Lee enough I believe is their fool.
- 1:12:44I believe that's his role in the group.
- 1:12:47It's name is Dawn and he's got a nice spread up in Springfield
- 1:12:50Tennessee and people come and they camp out.
- 1:12:53And that's what my wife and I did.
- 1:12:54And we spent, you know, we got there Friday and left Sunday
- 1:12:58and, you know, It was it was it was just one of those things
- 1:13:03where I'm like, you know, online, he even reads.
- 1:13:07It's all fun, it's all nice. It's great.
- 1:13:09It's great for sharing of knowledge and making friends,
- 1:13:12long-distance. But man, like, that's where he
- 1:13:15even re is at, man. It's when you get out there and
- 1:13:17you put your body on the earth and you, you interact with
- 1:13:20people and you do these types of things, you know, true.
- 1:13:26Yeah. We one of the first things that
- 1:13:28we did as a gathering after Were able to get together for
- 1:13:32runestone. With covid-19 did a camp out
- 1:13:35together. We it we had about 25 people and
- 1:13:40mostly adults, we have feeds Aldrin and it was a lot of
- 1:13:44drumming and a lot of sitting around a fire.
- 1:13:47It was, it was pretty incredible.
- 1:13:49Yeah. And that's one of the things
- 1:13:51that we were talking about doing something like that in the
- 1:13:55spring, doing a spring event, where we have a camping thing.
- 1:14:00So yeah, we were wanting To gather there's a group that that
- 1:14:04we share forthwith up in Columbus called the Mead Hall.
- 1:14:08So Kevin Atherton. If you're listening hail to you
- 1:14:11and your folk up there, but yeah, they've guided us along
- 1:14:15the way and we want to have like a regional like like all thing
- 1:14:21kind of no you guys too. Well, we're we had talked about
- 1:14:26it so it's still in that rocking back and forth, bubbling on the
- 1:14:29stove. Stay same here.
- 1:14:31Same here. Finding that we're quickly going
- 1:14:33to end up with more things than we can actually do with and
- 1:14:38still work because yeah, several festivals that we've been
- 1:14:42invited to now for next year. But I'm definitely going to the
- 1:14:45one with hell so that one's on the books.
- 1:14:49Yeah, I'm just glad to hear about stuff like this happening
- 1:14:53in our respective areas, man. I mean, because I hear, I don't
- 1:14:57know about you guys but like, especially with with my
- 1:15:00platforms, you know? A lot of people like, well,
- 1:15:02there's nothing going on in my ear.
- 1:15:03I'm like, why not? There's a and if there's not,
- 1:15:06then then do like, what people like yourselves are doing.
- 1:15:09If you can't find a way, then make one, absolutely make
- 1:15:15something happen. Do it.
- 1:15:16It's going to require work, it's not going to happen overnight,
- 1:15:19but at least plant that seed. Yeah, it can happen anywhere.
- 1:15:24It just starts with that, one seat to be planted and then next
- 1:15:27thing, you know, there's there's other people that want to get in
- 1:15:29on it and, you know, It can happen guys.
- 1:15:35Like it can it can definitely happen and it's not going to you
- 1:15:37know, you it's interesting that you said you know you guys
- 1:15:40started the runestone heathens the year that covid.
- 1:15:43Hit the world, our tribe basically became We named our
- 1:15:51tribe in. I think it was at you'll January
- 1:15:56of twenty, twenty two months later.
- 1:15:59Everything went up in Flames with covid and we're like, okay,
- 1:16:02great now what, you know, so, you know, but we had, we had
- 1:16:08enough, we had enough history with our core members that to
- 1:16:12know that. Okay, well, we're just, you
- 1:16:14know, on the back burner right now, we're just kind of laying
- 1:16:17low we're simmering, we're keeping the fire stoked, we're
- 1:16:19keeping those coals alive, we're not letting it go out and then
- 1:16:23whenever they saw then goes over whatever we're going to really,
- 1:16:26you know, bring it back up. And we've, you know, the
- 1:16:29Tennessee. Heathens group is over, you
- 1:16:31know, five hundred and some odd people.
- 1:16:33Now and you know maybe every couple of months we're having
- 1:16:36meetups we start trying to and you know there's their stuff
- 1:16:39going on not just in our area but in neighboring areas and so
- 1:16:44the regional presents that he even re has has really made
- 1:16:51itself known yes. And which I think is great, you
- 1:16:54know, that there's wholesome holistic views on this and that
- 1:16:58people are doing things like your folks are doing to make.
- 1:17:03People feel welcome and included and know that it's a safe place
- 1:17:07to Pursue their their, their, their spiritual needs.
- 1:17:12Their religious needs whatever. You know.
- 1:17:15And just be, just be Phil. Welcome, you know?
- 1:17:19Right. Great.
- 1:17:20That's the most important part is making people feel welcome.
- 1:17:25Because as you mentioned before, how do you know?
- 1:17:26Like there's there's this stigma, there's this
- 1:17:30unfortunate, you know, bad press that Heathen re has gotten so,
- 1:17:34how do we? You know, how do we counteract
- 1:17:38that? Well we create good.
- 1:17:40Press we, we do things like this where it's You know, good
- 1:17:44conversations people feel welcome and want to know more
- 1:17:49and you know. So you know, for those that are
- 1:17:51listening and watching today you guys are based out of Southwest
- 1:17:54Ohio, but the runestone heathens group on Facebook is, it's, you
- 1:18:00know, you got some questions to answer, whatever to join, but
- 1:18:03it's open to anybody that's that's curious, right?
- 1:18:05I mean, it's not just shifted to the Southwest Ohio, right now
- 1:18:10we've got members from other other Jim's.
- 1:18:14Absolutely, because we've got friends from all over who have
- 1:18:17joined and we have a pretty robust online presence.
- 1:18:22We've been doing a series of God conversations over messenger and
- 1:18:29zoom the past couple of months and we've got one coming up next
- 1:18:33week, not this week but next Wednesday on frigg and because
- 1:18:38it's Mother's night this month and so frig is our Focus this
- 1:18:42month last month we did. Oh Odin in the wild Hunt.
- 1:18:45And then Loki before that the lucky one was well attended, and
- 1:18:49the one on hell was very well. Yeah, yep.
- 1:18:53But yeah. So there are online things for
- 1:18:56people who don't have access and then we're always always happy
- 1:19:00to help with any kind of advice. Anyone wants on how to get
- 1:19:04started because the goal is to just get the information out
- 1:19:08there. So more people can get party, be
- 1:19:09part of it and we have got a massive library in in runestones
- 1:19:15the file, second file section. Yeah, there's tons and some of
- 1:19:20its rare stuff. So we really good files.
- 1:19:24Yes. Yeah, yeah I'm going to I'm
- 1:19:29going to be digging around there, you know, I mean I'm
- 1:19:31always going to be poking around and checking stuff out because
- 1:19:35and that's just and that's the other wonderful thing about
- 1:19:38modern times, right? Like it information is so
- 1:19:41readily available and that's what, that's what cracks me up
- 1:19:44about people, that try to act as Gatekeepers to all this stuff.
- 1:19:50It's kind of like, what? This isn't a closed-off
- 1:19:53religion. Number One, never has been Maybe
- 1:19:57certain regions had had Customs that you like.
- 1:19:59I mean, I remember hearing there were forget if it was the swedes
- 1:20:04or the Norwegians, whoever that would literally run people off
- 1:20:07strangers from their Alpha bloat ceremonies because it was a
- 1:20:11family only thing. And if you were a stranger, you
- 1:20:13got get out of here. Like you weren't welcome right?
- 1:20:17That's different. We're not talking about stuff
- 1:20:19like that, guys. Like for instance I are our
- 1:20:21winter nights which you could debate was Alpha bloat, Centric,
- 1:20:26Focus. Our winter nights are tribes
- 1:20:28winter. Nice thing was closed off.
- 1:20:30I didn't even invite my friends that aren't tribe over.
- 1:20:33It was just tribe. You know what I mean?
- 1:20:36That's okay. You can have stuff like that,
- 1:20:37but all of this other like, you know, I don't know, cancel
- 1:20:41culture appropriation. Who Do You Think You Are by
- 1:20:44wearing this particular thing? That or the other, like, I'm
- 1:20:46sorry. But who are you this even say
- 1:20:47that? Like we're not.
- 1:20:49We're not we're not. It ain't like that, guys.
- 1:20:52It's not a ritual being closed and a Entire culture and
- 1:20:58religious practice being closed. Yes.
- 1:21:01This has not been practice continuously by an indigenous
- 1:21:05group of people for centuries. Unlike the Sami practices or the
- 1:21:10practices of the of the indigenous, people of this
- 1:21:13continent. You know, that's an entirely
- 1:21:15different thing because they actively practiced at they have
- 1:21:18a right to their clothes. Ceremonies, we don't we're all
- 1:21:21learning at new and fresh from archaeological digs that's where
- 1:21:26we It's our info from so we have a right to anyone out of it.
- 1:21:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:21:31And I'm glad that we agree on that.
- 1:21:34It's refreshing and you know it gives people I think a hope you
- 1:21:39know or feeling of hope that oh wow, I can explore this more and
- 1:21:44not feel like I'm appropriating something because I think a lot
- 1:21:47of folks especially people that are knew coming into.
- 1:21:48This may feel like they're doing the wrong thing, or maybe I
- 1:21:53shouldn't be doing this because I don't have the ethnic
- 1:21:55background or any of that. The garbage, you know, like
- 1:21:57right, you know what I'm talking about, right?
- 1:22:00It's yeah, absolutely. We want people to regardless of
- 1:22:04that despite that it doesn't matter.
- 1:22:08Check it out, if it feels right to you, if it calls to you, for
- 1:22:10whatever reason you could say it's the God's calling to you.
- 1:22:13You could say it's your ancestors speaking to you
- 1:22:15through through through through or log.
- 1:22:19Whatever. It's something's touching you.
- 1:22:22Something's reaching you and you need to act upon it.
- 1:22:24So call it whatever you want. Up just do something about it.
- 1:22:28Just act upon it. I think is the overall message.
- 1:22:31We're trying to shit out here. Don't let anything stop you from
- 1:22:35from reaching out and trying to learn with people like us.
- 1:22:40Hopefully those people don't run into the assholes out there but
- 1:22:45I mean it's a give it time. I mean, you know you just you're
- 1:22:48bound to hit those, you know you go on enough, Journeys you going
- 1:22:52enough adventures and you're going to run into Bandits along
- 1:22:55the way, you're going to run into the out.
- 1:22:56Outlaws. You're going to run into those,
- 1:22:58the bad guys. Yeah.
- 1:23:00But we want to Manhattan have as much ammo to use against those
- 1:23:04Bandits as they possibly can to keep themselves safe.
- 1:23:08Yeah. Yep.
- 1:23:09Arm yourselves appropriately. And know where you can you know
- 1:23:14find your safe haven their shelter along the way?
- 1:23:17Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:23:17That's the most important thing is when people are spanking new,
- 1:23:21when they go and find groups like like the FAA that there,
- 1:23:26They can, they're still at a point where they could
- 1:23:28potentially be indoctrinated by some other beliefs and, you
- 1:23:32know, that's why we need to be out there and open.
- 1:23:35So when people are searching like Asatru Heathen read, they
- 1:23:39don't come across those groups first, and come across the truth
- 1:23:43and Tack and yeah, and us, you know?
- 1:23:46So, Absolutely. Well, I definitely appreciate
- 1:23:50what the both of you were doing and then the overall, I guess
- 1:23:53the bigger Collective of runestone heathens, you know.
- 1:23:58So I know it's not just the two of you, but I'm speaking to the
- 1:24:00two of you so I can say that I appreciate, you know, the
- 1:24:03approach that you both take and then the larger group that you
- 1:24:07guys have that seems to share the same values and approach to
- 1:24:11it. It's, that's refreshing.
- 1:24:12That's great. Glad that we got it.
- 1:24:15I got a chance to talk about this stuff and Get people aware
- 1:24:18of what's going on in your area. It's good stuff.
- 1:24:21Absolutely. Well, thank you and same.
- 1:24:28Same down here, you know, if you ever, you know, the get the
- 1:24:30whole Shadow moot thing that's a in Raven, Moon Hearts.
- 1:24:33I'll be sure to share with you guys.
- 1:24:35You know, stuff that you can find them on Facebook too.
- 1:24:37But they have, they have a summer time thing called Sunnah
- 1:24:42bloat, which is usually like in June.
- 1:24:44And then they have a chateau Mouton.
- 1:24:46The So over time frame, those are all public events, you know.
- 1:24:50So those are things that are open to people from anywhere and
- 1:24:54everywhere that, you know, as far as you're willing to travel
- 1:24:57just their they're welcoming, so definitely check them out.
- 1:25:02And so yeah, if you ever find yourself down in this area, you
- 1:25:05know, our Hall is open for you. So, oh yeah.
- 1:25:09But if you don't mind, I'm gonna wrap this up here.
- 1:25:11I think we covered a. Lot of great things.
- 1:25:13Is there anything else that we miss anything?
- 1:25:14That that was that in the back of your minds?
- 1:25:17That I didn't cover that you'd like to say before I wrap it up
- 1:25:19and when I do don't go anywhere. I want to touch base with you
- 1:25:22offline, but I do wrap things up for the people listening and
- 1:25:25watching. So is there anything that I
- 1:25:26missed anything else that you want to share nothing that that
- 1:25:30we can't talk about the next time we come on, I like that.
- 1:25:34I like that and that's the next time you come on then there will
- 1:25:37be a next time. I love to hear that.
- 1:25:38People want to come back you know on stuff like this because
- 1:25:41I think there's there's so much that we can talk about that you
- 1:25:44know we could go on for hours and so It's refreshing.
- 1:25:48I'm would have to be, would be happy to have you back on, right
- 1:25:52on? Yeah.
