Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: December 29th, 1957 brought CBS Radio back to Dodge City
- 0:05Speaker 1: for Gunsmoke, episode 299. It is Christmas time, and a
- 0:11Speaker 1: robbery accusation sends Marshal Matt Dillon and Chester toward a
- 0:15Speaker 1: homesteader's cabin while a hard winter storm gathers. The man
- 0:20Speaker 1: they seek maintains his innocence, but urgent work at the
- 0:23Speaker 1: isolated farm and concern for his wife keeps the marshal
- 0:28Speaker 1: and his deputy from making a quick return. William Conrad
- 0:32Speaker 1: is Matt Dillon, with Parley Bear as Chester. The cast
- 0:36Speaker 1: also includes Howard McNear, Georgia Ellis, Joseph Kearns, Virginia Gregg,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and Ralph Moody. Les Crutchfield wrote the script, and Norman
- 0:46Speaker 1: MacDonald produced and directed... The episode is Where'd They Go?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Here is the original broadcast.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 1:06Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:12Speaker 2: gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the
- 1:36Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:40Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:46Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:50Speaker 3: It's a chancy job, but it makes a man watchful.
- 1:55Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 2:11Speaker 5: We gonna stop in at the Long Branch for a minute, Mr. Dillon?
- 2:13Speaker 4: Might as well, Chester. There won't be much doing around
- 2:16Speaker 4: town tonight.
- 2:16Speaker 6: So I do hope they got a rip-snorting fire going.
- 2:20Speaker 4: The wind's got a nip.
- 2:21Speaker 5: To it, all right. And it's gonna blow up worse
- 2:24Speaker 5: one morning, too. Listen, Yeah. I thought Doc might be here,
- 2:34Speaker 5: but I don't see him no place.
- 2:36Speaker 7: Oh, Matt.
- 2:36Speaker 5: Yes, there you go, Miss Kitty.
- 2:38Speaker 7: You want to go over to the stove?
- 2:39Speaker 6: It's warm.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah, it feels warm right here, Kitty, after that wind outside.
- 2:43Speaker 7: It goes right through you, doesn't it?
- 2:45Speaker 5: So I think I'll reach on over to the stove, Mr. Dillon.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Might be some kind-hearted stranger who'll buy me a beer.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Justin never gives up hope, does he?
- 2:55Speaker 5: Sit down, Kitty. See if you're not too busy.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Thanks, Matt.
- 3:02Speaker 7: Don't you believe in kind-hearted strangers?
- 3:05Speaker 4: No, not since I was nine years old.
- 3:08Speaker 5: I'm not sure if you're so large.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I was kind of slow growing up. Would you like
- 3:13Speaker 4: a beer?
- 3:15Speaker 7: If you'll let a kind-hearted stranger buy it.
- 3:17Speaker 4: I wouldn't exactly call you a stranger, Kitty.
- 3:20Speaker 7: Well, you'll have to admit I'm kind-hearted, then. Sam, a
- 3:24Speaker 7: cup of beer.
- 3:24Speaker 5: All right, mister. Thank you.
- 3:27Speaker 7: You think a real bad storm's coming up, Matt?
- 3:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's that time of year.
- 3:32Speaker 7: I remember the blizzard last year around Christmas time.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 4: It was a rough one, all.
- 3:37Speaker 5: Right, wasn't it?
- 3:40Speaker 7: Matt, things would be rough this time of year, even
- 3:42Speaker 7: if the weather weren't bad.
- 3:45Speaker 6: Oh?
- 3:45Speaker 5: What's that mean?
- 3:47Speaker 7: Oh, holiday season. Families getting together and all. Just ordinary, decent,
- 3:56Speaker 7: good times.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Yeah. Do people still live that way, Kitty?
- 4:02Speaker 7: Not many out here.
- 4:04Speaker 5: I sure don't.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I'm sorry, man.
- 4:07Speaker 7: I've been here... I was thinking too much and remembering
- 4:12Speaker 7: too much.
- 4:13Speaker 8: That's no good, Kitty. This is a hard town and
- 4:16Speaker 8: a hard country. You go soft and they'll kill you.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 4:22Speaker 7: I remember nights you'd come in here after you had
- 4:26Speaker 7: to kill a man. Nights you stayed till sun up,
- 4:30Speaker 7: not talking, alone mostly, and dying a dozen deaths inside.
- 4:35Speaker 4: You know something, you're as sentimental as Jester.
- 4:39Speaker 9: No.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Well, give me a chance to... I've been robbed, Marshal.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Held up right in my own store.
- 4:53Speaker 4: How'd it happen?
- 4:55Speaker 6: A fellow come riding in after closing time.
- 4:58Speaker 9: Bandana over his face. Stuck a gun in my stomach
- 5:00Speaker 9: and took everything in the cash drawer.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Sixty-eight dollars.
- 5:03Speaker 4: It sure took you long enough to get around telling
- 5:06Speaker 4: me about it.
- 5:07Speaker 5: He tied me up. Left me there in the back room.
- 5:09Speaker 5: I just now got loose. You got to go after him, Marshal.
- 5:12Speaker 8: That's kind of a tall order, isn't it, trailing a
- 5:15Speaker 8: five-hour head start?
- 5:16Speaker 5: Well, that don't matter now, because I know who he is.
- 5:20Speaker 4: I thought you said you couldn't see his face.
- 5:22Speaker 9: I couldn't, but I could tell by his voice and
- 5:24Speaker 9: his walk and everything about him.
- 5:26Speaker 5: It was Clint Doty.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Clint Doty?
- 5:30Speaker 5: Yeah, he's the homesteader up the river.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I know him, I know him. I can't believe
- 5:34Speaker 4: Clint's the kind who'd do a thing like that.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Well, it was him, all right. I'm 100% certain.
- 5:38Speaker 9: Well.
- 5:41Speaker 4: All right, we'll ride out in the morning and bring
- 5:42Speaker 4: him in.
- 5:43Speaker 5: In the morning?
- 5:44Speaker 4: Well, if it was him, he'd be there.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Oh, but Marshal.
- 5:46Speaker 8: Look, Jonas, I'm not going to ride 12 miles up
- 5:49Speaker 8: that river bottom at midnight with a blizzard coming up
- 5:51Speaker 8: for $ 68.
- 5:52Speaker 4: No. We'll leave in the morning. Let's sun up.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Well, he must have heard us riding up, Mr.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Jones. Yeah, you'd think so.
- 6:14Speaker 5: I suppose he's got a hole up in the house
- 6:16Speaker 5: and just tried to shoot it out.
- 6:17Speaker 4: I don't think Dodie's his type, Chester.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Well, nobody didn't think he was the type to hold
- 6:22Speaker 5: up Mr.
- 6:23Speaker 7: Jones, either.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Well, morning, Marshal. Chester.
- 6:27Speaker 6: Dodie.
- 6:28Speaker 4: How are you, Dodie?
- 6:29Speaker 5: Come on in and sit. I got some coffee on
- 6:31Speaker 5: the stove.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Well, we might warm our hands a little bit. Come on, Chester.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Yes, Chester.
- 6:40Speaker 10: I reckon Medora can rustle up some eggs inside and
- 6:42Speaker 10: eat if you ain't at.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Thanks, Dottie, but we had breakfast before we left Dodge.
- 6:46Speaker 5: And you can get warm at least. What you trying
- 6:50Speaker 5: to do, Marshal? Blow up a storm?
- 6:52Speaker 4: That looks that way.
- 6:53Speaker 10: It's been snowing since daybreak out here in the river bottoms.
- 6:57Speaker 10: With that wind blowing, it's going to start drifting.
- 6:59Speaker 4: It probably will.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Well, I'll heat this coffee up with. What brings you
- 7:05Speaker 5: out this way, Marshal?
- 7:09Speaker 4: You, Sody?
- 7:11Speaker 5: Me? What do you mean?
- 7:13Speaker 4: We're here to arrest you. Take you back in.
- 7:17Speaker 5: What for?
- 7:17Speaker 4: Armed robbery.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Armed robbery? You mean that hold up at the general store?
- 7:24Speaker 8: That news seems to travel fast, doesn't it?
- 7:27Speaker 4: How'd you know about it?
- 7:28Speaker 5: Well, I... What's all this about armed robbery? Oh, you
- 7:33Speaker 5: know my wife again.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Yeah, sure. How are you, my darling?
- 7:35Speaker 7: Did I hear you accusing Clint of robbery, Marshal?
- 7:39Speaker 4: That's more a matter of Wilbur Jonas accusing him, ma'am.
- 7:42Speaker 5: When did this happen, Marshal?
- 7:45Speaker 4: Yesterday evening around 7 o'clock.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Clint hasn't been away from this place for two days.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, Medora.
- 7:50Speaker 8: My wife's word might not stand for much under those circumstances, Medora.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Are you calling me a liar? No, Medora, stop that.
- 7:58Speaker 5: There's people seeing me in town yesterday evening.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Wilbur Jonas claims he's one of them.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Well, the way I heard it, the fellow that held
- 8:05Speaker 5: him up was wearing a mask.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Because he recognized your voice.
- 8:10Speaker 7: I saw apples of the head and mouth full of them.
- 8:13Speaker 8: Well, I guess that'll be something for the judge.
- 8:15Speaker 4: To decide, ma'am.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Then you're going to take me into jail?
- 8:19Speaker 4: Unless you can prove you were.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Somewhere else at 7 o'clock last night.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Well, that might be kind of hard to do, Marshal.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Then we'd better get started. We've got a hard ride
- 8:28Speaker 4: ahead of us.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Oh, no, wait a minute. I can't go off and
- 8:31Speaker 5: leave Medora like this with a storm coming on.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Maybe one of the neighbors should come over and stay
- 8:36Speaker 4: with us.
- 8:37Speaker 7: There's none closer than five miles, Marshal, and they all
- 8:40Speaker 7: got plenty of troubles of their own this time of year.
- 8:42Speaker 10: I ain't even got enough firewood to split it up
- 8:44Speaker 10: the last term more than a day and a half.
- 8:47Speaker 10: I was aiming to get some laid in today.
- 8:49Speaker 8: I'm sure she's made out before.
- 8:51Speaker 10: Well, maybe so, but not in her condition.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Condition? What are you talking about?
- 9:00Speaker 5: Well, she's going to have a baby, Marshal.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Oh, for the love of me.
- 9:05Speaker 5: It's mighty hard on a woman having her man took
- 9:08Speaker 5: off to jail and not even wood in the house
- 9:10Speaker 5: to keep warm.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Now, look, Doty.
- 9:13Speaker 5: You know, it wouldn't take no time at all if
- 9:15Speaker 5: the three of us were to pitch in together.
- 9:17Speaker 8: All right, Doty, let's get at it.
- 9:22Speaker 4: THE END.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Oh, God, the vessel.
- 9:44Speaker 4: What's the matter, Chester?
- 9:45Speaker 6: Well, this piece of ax needs sharpening again, Mr.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 9:48Speaker 10: It ain't too good a steel.
- 9:50Speaker 5: And the marshal's got the vessel.
- 9:52Speaker 4: You couldn't prove it by me.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Well, listen, Chester, don't hold it there. Or here, Chester,
- 9:56Speaker 5: let me touch it up for the stove. Oh, my gracious,
- 10:00Speaker 5: that itches my teeth. If you ask me, we've already
- 10:03Speaker 5: chopped enough wood to last through this.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Winter and a half of it.
- 10:06Speaker 9: Stop that, Dodie.
- 10:07Speaker 5: That stove eats it up pretty fast.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Oh, Chester's right, Dodie. We've chopped enough.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Well, she's got to use some of it to cook with, too,
- 10:15Speaker 5: you know.
- 10:16Speaker 4: It's enough here to laugh so she can make other arrangements. Now,
- 10:18Speaker 4: let's pack it into the shed and.
- 10:19Speaker 8: Head back for town before that snow gets anywhere.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Well, whatever you say, Marshal.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Yes, sir. I must see him.
- 10:27Speaker 5: You must be sure I've taken on some vittles.
- 10:29Speaker 7: I've got some nice hot stew ready.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Did you say vittles?
- 10:33Speaker 4: Now, we've got to get started, Medora. It's getting late.
- 10:35Speaker 10: Oh, it won't do no harm to you. First, it'll
- 10:38Speaker 10: make the trail shorter, Marshal.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Well.
- 10:42Speaker 5: My!
- 10:43Speaker 3: Just look at all that firewood!
- 10:47Speaker 5: I'm right obliged to you, man.
- 10:49Speaker 4: You're welcome, Maduro.
- 10:50Speaker 5: I reckon I'll need every stick of it, too, with
- 10:53Speaker 5: this wind.
- 10:53Speaker 7: Driving the snow into the north wall of the cabin.
- 10:57Speaker 5: God dang it, I clearly forgot.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Forgot what?
- 11:01Speaker 5: The chinkum.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Chicken?
- 11:03Speaker 5: No, the chinkin'. The chinkins all fell out of the
- 11:05Speaker 5: north wall of the house. Oh, I was aiming to
- 11:08Speaker 5: fix it today. I got a lot of bark slabs
- 11:11Speaker 5: cut laying out back to the barn. Now, look, Dodie.
- 11:13Speaker 10: Oh, it's mighty hard on a woman in Medora's condition
- 11:16Speaker 10: with the snow and the sleet blowing.
- 11:19Speaker 5: In on her.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Dodie, would it be all right if we eat first?
- 11:25Speaker 7: Well, I reckon that about does the job down at
- 11:27Speaker 7: this end.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Yeah, just about through here, too. You know, that ain't
- 11:31Speaker 5: a bad piece of work if I do say so myself.
- 11:34Speaker 7: Oh, sir, a carpenter couldn't.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Have done one bit better.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Well, that ought to keep the wind up.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Oh, that looks fine, Marshal. Just fine. I'm mighty obliged
- 11:57Speaker 5: to you, man.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Oh, that's all right.
- 11:59Speaker 5: Well, I know you got your duty to do.
- 12:01Speaker 10: You got to take me in, and I want you
- 12:03Speaker 10: to know there's no hard feelings about it.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Oh, sure, Tony.
- 12:06Speaker 5: And I appreciate the way you've both been so decent.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Help me get things.
- 12:10Speaker 6: In shape so Maduro will be all right here alone. Well,
- 12:14Speaker 6: it ain't many lawmen that take this trouble.
- 12:16Speaker 8: Well, she's got enough problems without making a word for it.
- 12:19Speaker 8: Let's put the tools away and get started. It's going
- 12:20Speaker 8: to be dark before.
- 12:21Speaker 4: We get to Dodge.
- 12:23Speaker 6: Sir, you sure are right about her having plenty of problems, Marshal.
- 12:27Speaker 5: In her condition and all. And now the cattle gone.
- 12:31Speaker 4: The cattle gone?
- 12:34Speaker 10: Oh, of course, we only had about 20 head, but
- 12:37Speaker 10: with me going to prison, maybe it's... There's been enough
- 12:41Speaker 10: to see her through, her and the little one.
- 12:43Speaker 4: What do you mean, the cattle's gone?
- 12:45Speaker 10: I had them there in the meadow, back at the corral,
- 12:47Speaker 10: letting them pick clean what pasture was left.
- 12:49Speaker 5: I guess they drifted off. Well, of course they drifted off.
- 12:53Speaker 8: When that storm hit, they turned tail and moved along
- 12:55Speaker 8: with the wind. Cattle always do that.
- 12:57Speaker 10: Well, I guess it don't matter much, though. Medora couldn't
- 13:01Speaker 10: take care of them no how, not in her condition. Well,
- 13:03Speaker 10: she could if you'd hold them in the corral there
- 13:05Speaker 10: next to the barn.
- 13:06Speaker 4: All she'd have to do is push the hay out
- 13:07Speaker 4: of the loft door.
- 13:09Speaker 10: I reckon they drifted down south there about three miles
- 13:11Speaker 10: and come up against the bluff. Oh, they'll probably mill
- 13:15Speaker 10: around and freeze to death there if the storm keeps up.
- 13:18Speaker 4: About three miles, huh?
- 13:19Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 13:20Speaker 10: I was aiming to go after them, but, of course,
- 13:22Speaker 10: one man alone wouldn't have had much chance.
- 13:24Speaker 4: All right, Dodie, come on. Let's go find your cattle.
- 13:41Speaker 6: Ah!
- 13:41Speaker 4: Ah! Go on in there! Let's get in there!
- 13:48Speaker 5: Well, that's the meanest, crankiest, ornate bunch of cattle I've
- 13:52Speaker 5: ever seen in all my born days.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Storm's really got a boot.
- 13:56Speaker 10: You know, that hat turned out to be more of
- 13:58Speaker 10: a trot than I thought, Marshal.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it sure did, Dodie.
- 14:03Speaker 6: I just don't know how I'd have managed without you
- 14:06Speaker 6: fellas helping. We're mighty grateful to you, me and Medora both.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Well, we couldn't let the cattle freeze.
- 14:13Speaker 10: Well, if you wait now till I put these lanterns
- 14:15Speaker 10: in the barn, we can leave any time you say.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Unless, of course, you'd like some hot coffee first.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Dodie, it's dark now.
- 14:21Speaker 8: You know, as well as I do, we're not going
- 14:23Speaker 8: to ride back to Dodge tonight.
- 14:25Speaker 10: Well, say, in that case, maybe you wouldn't mind helping
- 14:27Speaker 10: me kill and dress a couple.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Of dozen hens. A couple of dozen hens? And hang
- 14:31Speaker 5: them up under the eaves to freeze. Oh, my gracious!
- 14:34Speaker 5: Chicken broth, mighty good for a woman in the door.
- 14:38Speaker 8: Look, Dodie, we've already chopped your wood, fixed your house,
- 14:41Speaker 8: and rounded up your cattle.
- 14:43Speaker 5: Oh, you've been mighty decent.
- 14:44Speaker 2: All right.
- 14:46Speaker 4: All right, we'll help you dress your chickens.
- 14:48Speaker 8: We'll make soap for you, salt down the pork, preserve eggs,
- 14:53Speaker 8: anything you say, up until midnight.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Then I'm going to get some sleep.
- 14:57Speaker 8: And at sunup, we're going to ride into Dodge, and
- 15:00Speaker 8: you're going to jail.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Judge, I'm sorry. Hey, Chester, come on, wake up.
- 15:25Speaker 5: What's the matter, Mr. Jones?
- 15:29Speaker 4: You tell me. You're the one who's supposed to be
- 15:31Speaker 4: on guard. Huh?
- 15:33Speaker 5: Well, it's after daylight. I must have dozed off for
- 15:37Speaker 5: a second.
- 15:37Speaker 4: You made a couple of hours, don't you?
- 15:40Speaker 5: Queen Doty didn't get away?
- 15:41Speaker 8: No, he's in there. I just woke him up.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Oh, well. I kind of figured he wasn't going nowhere
- 15:48Speaker 5: in that storm.
- 15:49Speaker 4: What storm?
- 15:50Speaker 10: Hmm.
- 15:52Speaker 5: Why, it's over.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it died out during the night. You better get
- 15:55Speaker 4: yourself collected, Chester. We're heading for Dodge.
- 15:58Speaker 5: My, just look at that sun on the snow, will you?
- 16:01Speaker 5: Turned out for them boots that I just wore. Oh!
- 16:04Speaker 4: What's the matter?
- 16:05Speaker 9: Oh, Mr.
- 16:05Speaker 5: Dillon, I'm so lame.
- 16:06Speaker 6: I don't even know if I can stand up straight.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Well, keep trying.
- 16:10Speaker 5: That's right. I'm going to have to be spoon fed
- 16:13Speaker 5: for a month. I never worked so hard in all
- 16:15Speaker 5: my life. Hello? Is anybody home? Somebody outside.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Yeah. By golly, it's Doc.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Doc?
- 16:28Speaker 4: Well, come on in, you old reprobate.
- 16:30Speaker 6: I'm coming to sign up my horse and buggy.
- 16:32Speaker 5: I wonder what he's doing out this way.
- 16:35Speaker 4: He's being a patient, I guess. He must have left
- 16:37Speaker 4: town awful early.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Hey, did somebody ride up?
- 16:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's Doc. You about ready to leave, Billy?
- 16:43Speaker 5: There's still a morning to take.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Nothing's changed.
- 16:46Speaker 1: There, Matt.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Yes, sir. Well, this is the way I've been hiding out.
- 16:56Speaker 4: How are you, Doc?
- 16:57Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Oh, good morning, Clint. Morning, Doc. Got any coffee? Oh,
- 17:02Speaker 5: I have some in two shakes, Doc. Medora!
- 17:05Speaker 7: Yes, Clint?
- 17:05Speaker 5: Will you come out and fix some coffee?
- 17:07Speaker 4: Yes, sir. What are you doing out here this time
- 17:09Speaker 4: of morning, Doc?
- 17:10Speaker 6: Oh, the Murdoch baby was acting up. Touched the troops,
- 17:13Speaker 6: so I spent the night there. Thought I'd just drop
- 17:15Speaker 6: over and say hello to the doders, as long as
- 17:17Speaker 6: I was this close.
- 17:18Speaker 4: You could have done that in town. I'm taking him in.
- 17:21Speaker 6: You're taking him in?
- 17:23Speaker 5: For what?
- 17:24Speaker 4: Rob and Jonas sent those store a night before last.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Rob and the.

- 17:44Speaker 6: lot of money into a poker game, and the boys
- 17:46Speaker 6: got kind of suspicious. And he finally admitted the whole thing.
- 17:50Speaker 6: So they borrowed the jail keys from Judge Bent and
- 17:53Speaker 6: locked him up until he'd get back. But Clint, didn't
- 17:56Speaker 6: you tell him?
- 17:57Speaker 5: Well, I.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Tell me what?
- 17:59Speaker 6: Clint here couldn't have done it, Matt. He was playing

- 18:04Speaker 6: the back room of the livery stable.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Doty.

- 18:11Speaker 5: if I could prove where I wasn't. I didn't know
- 18:13Speaker 5: Doc's word was actual proof. Come here, Doty.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 18:17Speaker 5: He done that deliberate, Mr. Dillon, letting us think he
- 18:20Speaker 5: was Dilly just to get us to do all that
- 18:22Speaker 5: work for him.
- 18:22Speaker 4: And I suppose the story about your wife having a baby.
- 18:25Speaker 5: Oh, that's the gospel truth, Marshal. Well, it sure is, Matt.
- 18:28Speaker 5: I'll vouch for that. Let me see now. It's about
- 18:30Speaker 5: another six months. Let me... Around the 1st of July.
- 18:33Speaker 4: 1st of July?
- 18:34Speaker 6: Yes.
- 18:35Speaker 5: I didn't say when, Marshal. And you didn't ask me.
- 18:38Speaker 7: Ain't you gonna.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Wish it well?
- 18:40Speaker 4: The 1st of July... Oh, help me, Dodie, for two cents.
- 18:46Speaker 10: Oh, we might even name him after you, Marshal, if
- 18:49Speaker 10: we can't think of nothing else.
- 18:57Speaker 4: All right. All right, Dodie. How about some of that coffee, huh?
- 19:02Speaker 5: Oh.
