Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: Job Security (w/Ryan Day)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: It is to GOADSA Company presented by FanDuel and the
- 0:23Speaker 1: FanDuel Sportsbook. Ryan Day, the head coach of the Ohio
- 0:27Speaker 1: State Buckeyes, get to join us in about ten minutes. Mikey,
- 0:31Speaker 1: It's fascinating to me that Ryan Day was a guy
- 0:35Speaker 1: who I would say would lead all coaches in terms
- 0:38Speaker 1: of guys who were always on the hot seat. And
- 0:41Speaker 1: now he is the guy I think in college football,
- 0:43Speaker 1: unless you guys correct me, with the most job security
- 0:47Speaker 1: of any coach in America, Like, is there anyone else?
- 0:49Speaker 1: And I'm happy for him because he's earned it and
- 0:51Speaker 1: he deserves it, and I'm excited to talk to him
- 0:54Speaker 1: at ten minutes. But when you think of coaches that
- 0:57Speaker 1: have job security, you certainly think of which was not
- 1:01Speaker 1: the case three years ago.
- 1:05Speaker 2: The only name I can come up with that probably
- 1:07Speaker 2: has more job security. Two names I can come up
- 1:11Speaker 2: with have more job security than Ryan Day, Pat McAfee, yes,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and Kurt Signetti and Signette, those are the only two
- 1:21Speaker 2: guys that I could think of that are probably have
- 1:24Speaker 2: more jobs.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm saying Ryan Day could lose all his games this
- 1:27Speaker 1: year and lose to Michigan, not win a single game
- 1:29Speaker 1: and he'd still be the Ohio state head coach next year.
- 1:31Speaker 3: How about that he would be the Ohio state coach
- 1:34Speaker 3: next year. But the dangerous part about saying that Ryan
- 1:37Speaker 3: Day has this certain level of job security. If you
- 1:41Speaker 3: do lose the Michigan game, yes, all bets are off
- 1:45Speaker 3: and everything's back on the table. In terms of Ryan
- 1:47Speaker 3: Day putting himself back onto the hot seat.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I think. I mean, they're in the playoffs every year.
- 1:52Speaker 1: They churn out more NFL players I think than any
- 1:55Speaker 1: other university, any of the program in the country. And
- 1:58Speaker 1: the guy won a national championship. I mean, and what
- 2:03Speaker 1: do you mean if he loses to Michigan, He's not
- 2:05Speaker 1: gonna get fired. Man, those days are over. I don't
- 2:08Speaker 1: know that.
- 2:09Speaker 2: They are absolutely crazy in Columbus, Ohio about this team,
- 2:13Speaker 2: especially when it comes to that rivalry. I'm not saying
- 2:15Speaker 2: he doesn't deserve more job security. I'm not saying he
- 2:19Speaker 2: isn't you know, a capable and really good head coach.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I'm just saying these people aren't what you'd call saying.
- 2:26Speaker 1: In fairness to what it is you are saying Ryan Day.
- 2:30Speaker 1: The year he won the national championship, they lost to Michigan.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And fans weren't happy.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I mean, yep, that's a completely different thing. You should
- 2:37Speaker 3: not be able to lose. You should not be able
- 2:39Speaker 3: to lose to your biggest rival in the season and
- 2:42Speaker 3: still make the playoffs and have the chance to win
- 2:44Speaker 3: the national championship. There's something there's something flawed in that
- 2:50Speaker 3: logic where take me back to the days in college
- 2:52Speaker 3: football where you lose a game and it feels like
- 2:55Speaker 3: your world's ending, your season's over. A program as storied
- 2:59Speaker 3: and prestigious as Ohio State should not be able to
- 3:02Speaker 3: lose the game to Michigan and then still have something
- 3:06Speaker 3: to look forward to. That that's not some some bowl
- 3:09Speaker 3: game in Orlando, Florida.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So what are you saying here? If they lose to
- 3:13Speaker 1: their rival, they should not make the season, should be over, over.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Right, have fun at the rely questo, why do they
- 3:22Speaker 3: get to play in that? I mean somebody has to
- 3:24Speaker 3: fill the cheese at ball spot.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It's a punishment. Yes, yeah. Can you think of coaches
- 3:31Speaker 1: who have similar job security to Ryan Day? I would
- 3:34Speaker 1: say Dan Lanning in Oregon, of course, Kurt Signetti in Indiana,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and I would also say Lincoln Riley at USC. I
- 3:41Speaker 1: don't know why the guy just never got anything, didn't
- 3:43Speaker 1: do anything, and never gets fired the Todd Bowls of
- 3:47Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 3:48Speaker 3: The name I will throw out there would be Marcus
- 3:51Speaker 3: Freeman at Notre Dame. Good one, just because Notre Dame
- 3:54Speaker 3: is coming off of that Brian Kelly experience where they
- 3:56Speaker 3: don't want that Brian Kelly stink back on them, right,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and it feels like Notre Dame is not going to
- 4:01Speaker 3: put Marcus Freeman in spots to to really test themselves
- 4:05Speaker 3: outside of the conference, Like Notre Dame is more than
- 4:07Speaker 3: happy with with Marcus Freeman getting double digit wins going
- 4:11Speaker 3: to the playoff, and especially now that they have that
- 4:13Speaker 3: that basically guaranteed playoff spot. Yeah, if Notre Dame is
- 4:16Speaker 3: ranked inside the top.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And he looks great just standing on the sideline, Yes,
- 4:24Speaker 1: where do.
- 4:25Speaker 2: We put Lane Kiffin on this scale? Considering all they
- 4:27Speaker 2: did to bring him there? Wow, all of that hoopla,
- 4:31Speaker 2: it'd be hard to be like, yeah, you know what,
- 4:33Speaker 2: this isn't just this just isn't work it out.
- 4:35Speaker 1: He's got a year, right, he does before people start
- 4:37Speaker 1: criticizing him.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you could you could make the argument this year
- 4:40Speaker 3: that Lane Kiffin is under the most pressure in the
- 4:43Speaker 3: SEC to win, which sounds crazy because he's just getting there.
- 4:47Speaker 3: But in this era of the transfer portal and all
- 4:49Speaker 3: the hoopla that comes when you hire Lane Kiffin, lane
- 4:52Speaker 3: Kiffin does have an expectation to win year one in
- 4:54Speaker 3: Baton Rouge.
- 4:55Speaker 1: It sounds crazy when you consider Kailin de Bores in
- 4:57Speaker 1: the same conference.
- 4:58Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, one the Mikey Ware. I don't think
- 5:04Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin deserves the the level of job security because
- 5:08Speaker 3: if you're if you're LSU, you know that Lane Kiffin
- 5:12Speaker 3: will screw you over the second he gets the chance
- 5:14Speaker 3: at some point. So LSU can't go in and say like, oh,
- 5:17Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin has this job for life when you know
- 5:20Speaker 3: behind Lane Kiffin's back it's a knife getting ready to
- 5:23Speaker 3: dagger you in the neck.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So you fire him the future. I'm sorry, I can't. Yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 1: that was a lot.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I'm not saying that Lane doesn't have job security. I'm
- 5:37Speaker 2: wondering if LSU has employer security, because that's where it
- 5:40Speaker 2: would be, right.
- 5:41Speaker 1: How about McGuire Texas Tech. He's got security, right, he does.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I can't believe I'm smart. I'm smart, Taylor, you make
- 5:49Speaker 1: that face. But the guy with the most job security
- 5:52Speaker 1: is the head coach at Indiana.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, Joey McGuire just has job security because
- 5:57Speaker 3: it's Texas Tech though, And it's like, Okay, what are
- 6:00Speaker 3: we gonna tak that he just says.
- 6:02Speaker 2: We're a security because it's Indiana.
- 6:03Speaker 3: We're gonna fire Joey McGuire and try to convince somebody
- 6:06Speaker 3: else to come to Lubbock. Like joe McGuire is doing
- 6:08Speaker 3: a good job, good enough job to be like, Okay,
- 6:10Speaker 3: we don't have to worry about him if if he
- 6:12Speaker 3: has a couple of down seasons, right, we trust Joey
- 6:14Speaker 3: McGuire to figure it out instead of trying to restart
- 6:17Speaker 3: this process in Lubbock.
- 6:18Speaker 1: So he has job security, I mean he does, he
- 6:20Speaker 1: really does. Sark does not. Who are the guys who
- 6:23Speaker 1: don't have Who are the guys who his schools are
- 6:26Speaker 1: just waiting for them to trip up so they could
- 6:28Speaker 1: fire him? Unc un c.
- 6:31Speaker 3: U and C is at the top of the list.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Uh tough one, Sark, for sure, you think so, oh,
- 6:39Speaker 4: no doubt, just because of the level of coaches that
- 6:41Speaker 4: would want that job if it ever opened.
- 6:43Speaker 1: The level of coaches that would want that job. The
- 6:46Speaker 1: expectations there, the amount of money that Texas has to
- 6:50Speaker 1: offer a new head coach. Austin is a great spot,
- 6:53Speaker 1: great place to live, no state tax. I believe in Texas.
- 6:56Speaker 1: So yeah, there's got to be and you have a
- 6:58Speaker 1: manning at quarterback, do something with them.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I mean, Stu, I think you mentioned the school with
- 7:03Speaker 3: the coach with the hottest seat and ready to kind
- 7:07Speaker 3: of turn the program and find a new coach. I
- 7:10Speaker 3: think it's Alabama.
- 7:12Speaker 1: He made the playoff last year and that's the problem
- 7:14Speaker 1: with the expanded playoff. He could just say, hey, I
- 7:16Speaker 1: made the playoffs last year. Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Man, if you're Alabama, the standard can't be making the
- 7:21Speaker 3: playoff and then getting run off the field by Kirk
- 7:23Speaker 3: Sinnetti and Fernando Mendoza. Like Alabama fans are watching them
- 7:27Speaker 3: lose to Indiana and saying, that should be us running
- 7:30Speaker 3: you off the field.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Yep, Mikey, you agree. It's Kaylen de Bor, the guy
- 7:34Speaker 1: with the most amount of pressure on him. This year, probably.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Kaylen de Bor could win forty five nothing and they'll
- 7:39Speaker 2: wonder why it wasn't fifty two.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Like that's what it's like for Kaylen de Boor in Alabama.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Put that on the Paul Taylor could Kaitlin de boor
- 7:47Speaker 1: win a game by forty five points and the fans
- 7:49Speaker 1: would wonder why it wasn't by fifty two.
- 7:52Speaker 3: The coach who's on the coach who's on the hottest
- 7:55Speaker 3: seat that doesn't really care if his seat is hot, Yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 3: because he just has like staring contest with him or
- 8:01Speaker 3: who's gonna bling first contest with them? Right, Clemson and
- 8:05Speaker 3: Dabo Sweeney.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Right, he should have been fired three years ago.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Like every time they have a down season. Dabbo just
- 8:12Speaker 3: looks at Clemson's powers that being like, I dare you
- 8:15Speaker 3: to get rid of me. You're not gonna do better
- 8:16Speaker 3: than me, And like, if you think you're gonna do
- 8:19Speaker 3: better than me, I'll gladly take whatever buyout money you
- 8:22Speaker 3: want to give me.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I never imagine that this day would arrive where I
- 8:26Speaker 1: would be able to say this, But the head coach
- 8:28Speaker 1: at college football with the most job security in the
- 8:32Speaker 1: entire sport outside of Kurt Signetti, Ryan Day joins us next.

- 10:27Speaker 1: The head coach of the Ohio State Buck Guys, Ryan Day,
- 10:30Speaker 1: is with us very excited about this. College football is
- 10:33Speaker 1: ten eleven days away from week zero. What is the
- 10:37Speaker 1: coach of the Ohio State Buck Guys doing over the
- 10:40Speaker 1: next ten days to get his team ready for the
- 10:43Speaker 1: upcoming season?
- 10:44Speaker 5: Coach, Well, I just left a special teams meeting. We
- 10:47Speaker 5: had a big practice this morning, so sort.
- 10:50Speaker 6: In the middle of the grind right now. This is
- 10:52Speaker 6: a big week for us.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, probably, And I guess you know, practice thirteen
- 10:57Speaker 5: now and this is where you find out about yourself,
- 11:00Speaker 5: you know, as a player.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Some of the freshmen.
- 11:01Speaker 5: I feel like I remember feeling like this is a
- 11:03Speaker 5: freshman where you feel like you're in the middle of
- 11:05Speaker 5: the ocean and everywhere you look as water there's no
- 11:08Speaker 5: there's no island there or land in sight. So they're
- 11:11Speaker 5: swimming right now. But it's all part of the process,
- 11:14Speaker 5: and uh, these guys will come out of it soon.
- 11:16Speaker 6: In order to feel good, you got to feel bad,
- 11:18Speaker 6: you know what I mean. So, uh, these guys are
- 11:20Speaker 6: going through that. Now.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Let me be the first one to congratulate you on
- 11:23Speaker 1: getting the most votes from the media and being the
- 11:25Speaker 1: number one team in the country before we snap the football.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Congratulations coach. Yeah right, you don't like the preseason AP rankings,
- 11:37Speaker 1: you know.
- 11:37Speaker 5: I will say this, like, I don't think it affects anybody,
- 11:41Speaker 5: Like I don't even think that TV, you know, because
- 11:44Speaker 5: like whether it's now or in like three weeks, you know,
- 11:47Speaker 5: we're always sort of like right up there. And I
- 11:50Speaker 5: don't even think it even phases in, Like nobody even
- 11:52Speaker 5: brings it up. It's not even anything that we even
- 11:54Speaker 5: focus on.
- 11:55Speaker 6: Like at all, you know what I mean.
- 11:56Speaker 5: So it's not even one of those things I even
- 11:58Speaker 5: worry about whether it is or it isn't. But but
- 12:00Speaker 5: I will say, like, I just so antiquated now because
- 12:03Speaker 5: nobody even knows these teams because everyone's guys leave and transfer,
- 12:07Speaker 5: so it's even less relevant.
- 12:10Speaker 6: Now.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Do you like today's college football?
- 12:13Speaker 6: Yeah? I love it. I love it because you're right from.
- 12:16Speaker 1: A fan standpoint, it's confusing as to where you know
- 12:18Speaker 1: who's gone where and who's playing quarterback where it's just
- 12:21Speaker 1: confusing for fans, that's all.
- 12:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, are there things that we all want
- 12:26Speaker 5: to see changed? Absolutely? The offseason is not fun, but
- 12:30Speaker 5: the season is because it's still it's still football and
- 12:34Speaker 5: that's what it's all about.
- 12:35Speaker 6: And it's still you know, eighteen to.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Twenty two year olds and helping them in the most
- 12:38Speaker 5: formal years their lives, and that part of it has
- 12:41Speaker 5: not changed. You know, these kids do change, the generations
- 12:45Speaker 5: are different, but that hasn't and that's that's what makes
- 12:48Speaker 5: this fun.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Coach, I don't know if you saw, but Akron is
- 12:51Speaker 3: actually doing a promotion where they're letting a fan do
- 12:54Speaker 3: the opening drive, work with the coach and call the
- 12:57Speaker 3: opening drive in their in their first game. Is there
- 12:59Speaker 3: an gift to Ohio State Booster could give you for
- 13:02Speaker 3: you to kind of reciprocate that and let let them call.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Series full disclosure. I think like two years ago we
- 13:10Speaker 5: did this auction, and you know, we're doing all these
- 13:13Speaker 5: different things. And I got up there and I said, yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 5: anybody who wants to call the first play? And I
- 13:18Speaker 5: forget exactly what what the opener was. I said, you
- 13:20Speaker 5: guys can call the first play. And it went for like,
- 13:23Speaker 5: I don't know, twenty thousand dollars, and they didn't go.
- 13:27Speaker 6: They didn't call the first play. But that wasn't going
- 13:32Speaker 6: to happen this.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Did he even try to call the first play? Was
- 13:38Speaker 1: it rejected? What happened?
- 13:41Speaker 6: I think? I said, well, what do you like?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Run or pass?
- 13:43Speaker 6: Passed?
- 13:46Speaker 1: Run it up the middle hand? Them is twenty thousand back.
- 13:49Speaker 1: I mean, oh, man, coach, so you're starting the season,
- 13:57Speaker 1: let me let me do this because I'm so happy
- 13:59Speaker 1: for you, because I was saying, before you won the
- 14:01Speaker 1: national championship, there is no reason that Ryan Day should
- 14:05Speaker 1: be on the hot seat every single season. And so
- 14:08Speaker 1: you have gone from a guy who's always on the
- 14:09Speaker 1: hot seat to a guy who has I think the
- 14:12Speaker 1: most job security in college football. And I was just
- 14:14Speaker 1: wondering how that feels to you, Well.
- 14:18Speaker 6: I didn't feel like that before. I don't feel like
- 14:20Speaker 6: that now.
- 14:22Speaker 5: I think that there's just an expectation of the tradition
- 14:25Speaker 5: that comes with Ohio State, and like this time of year,
- 14:28Speaker 5: like everything just gets ramped up because it means so
- 14:30Speaker 5: much to so many people here and we have to
- 14:33Speaker 5: hold up that standard year in and year out. And when
- 14:36Speaker 5: you look at this season, you know, it's a monster.
- 14:39Speaker 5: We got to be really good on the road this season,
- 14:40Speaker 5: and then we got to finish the season better than
- 14:42Speaker 5: we did last year. And so no, I mean just honestly,
- 14:46Speaker 5: it's year to year when it comes to you know, producing,
- 14:50Speaker 5: but then also making sure that it isn't year to
- 14:52Speaker 5: year how you're recruiting and how you're retaining and how
- 14:54Speaker 5: you're building your staff. And I think every year we've
- 14:57Speaker 5: gotten stronger, we've built we've done the different things that
- 14:59Speaker 5: we need to do to establish, you know, credibility, you know,
- 15:05Speaker 5: because you know, truth be told. For me, this is
- 15:08Speaker 5: my first time as a head coach here ot Oho State.
- 15:10Speaker 5: And you know, once you when you when you have
- 15:12Speaker 5: that opportunity, man, you got to take it and run.
- 15:15Speaker 5: And but you also have to have victories along the way,
- 15:18Speaker 5: and then certainly you have to prove you know your
- 15:20Speaker 5: worth and so along the way. You know, certainly, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 5: we've built up a lot of credibility here with with
- 15:25Speaker 5: the people in Ohio.
- 15:26Speaker 6: But hey, man, try losing a game. See how it goes.
- 15:29Speaker 5: I mean, it doesn't go over it well if you
- 15:31Speaker 5: don't win games. But we know that that's that's not
- 15:34Speaker 5: something we run from. I mean from I remember from
- 15:36Speaker 5: the first press conference I had, I said, hey, you know,
- 15:38Speaker 5: the expectation is to win the rivalry game and win
- 15:40Speaker 5: every other game after that, And that's still the way
- 15:43Speaker 5: it is right now eight years later.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Coach, I know you take a lot of pride in
- 15:46Speaker 3: how many guys Ohio State and your program puts into
- 15:50Speaker 3: the NFL. Eleven players drafted. Uh this past NFL draft.
- 15:54Speaker 3: What are the challenges replacing that group and that level
- 15:57Speaker 3: of talent.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Well, the good news is we have a lot of
- 16:00Speaker 6: practice doing it.
- 16:02Speaker 5: The bad news is, yeah, I mean we have to
- 16:04Speaker 5: do it again this year with a bunch of guys
- 16:05Speaker 5: who left in three years, which is great for them,
- 16:07Speaker 5: not great for us. But I think the first thing
- 16:10Speaker 5: is just the production, but then the leadership and the
- 16:13Speaker 5: experience and so yeah, I mean we.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Got to do a good job of that. We tried
- 16:18Speaker 6: to replace some of those things in the portal.
- 16:20Speaker 5: We have some guys who have experience not playing at
- 16:23Speaker 5: Ohio State but at other places, and so that's all
- 16:26Speaker 5: part of the process that we're working on right now
- 16:28Speaker 5: and putting those pieces in the puzzle.
- 16:30Speaker 6: And I think Matt does a great job of that.
- 16:32Speaker 5: On defense, always has you know, when you look at,
- 16:34Speaker 5: you know, what we did last year with our vel
- 16:36Speaker 5: and Sonny and Caleb, you know, there'll be a lot
- 16:39Speaker 5: of things that we do that are similar and then
- 16:40Speaker 5: other things that we have to make sure that we're
- 16:41Speaker 5: putting our guys in the right positions to be successful.
- 16:44Speaker 5: When you look at the Patriots and what he did there,
- 16:47Speaker 5: you know, each year it looked a little different based
- 16:48Speaker 5: on what he had. So that's part of this preseason
- 16:52Speaker 5: and you know, we're building our identity over there.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Now.
- 16:54Speaker 3: What do you like about your quarterback? Julian saying as
- 16:56Speaker 3: he enters his second year now as the full time
- 16:59Speaker 3: starter for all Ohio State.
- 17:01Speaker 6: I like the way he's practicing right now.
- 17:03Speaker 5: I like his approach, acting like a pro and really
- 17:06Speaker 5: enjoys working with Billy Fessler, but really enjoys working with
- 17:09Speaker 5: Arthur Smith. Just the challenges that he brings on a
- 17:12Speaker 5: daily day basis coming from Aaron Rodgers, you know, to
- 17:16Speaker 5: somebody who has just had so much experience and so
- 17:19Speaker 5: much feedback and can handle so much information, just has
- 17:21Speaker 5: a rolodex of plays and games to a young young
- 17:25Speaker 5: player like Julian.
- 17:27Speaker 6: But but Julian's embrace that it's been a challenge for him.
- 17:29Speaker 5: I think his leadership and his voice has become, you know,
- 17:32Speaker 5: really good with our guys. And I think he's vibing
- 17:35Speaker 5: well with the offensive line and the skill guys. So
- 17:38Speaker 5: they're moving around a lot of confidence right now in
- 17:40Speaker 5: the Woody and they're practicing that way.
- 17:42Speaker 6: So that's been good. I got to keep building on it.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Coach, you mentioned the Rivalry game, and it seems like
- 17:48Speaker 2: new Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is trying to like
- 17:51Speaker 2: lower the temperature on this game. Are you a fan
- 17:54Speaker 2: of him lowering the temperature of that game or are
- 17:56Speaker 2: you like, nope, let's keep it going.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Well.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I mean that game is the biggest game, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 5: in the world. You know, we know that it has
- 18:06Speaker 5: been that way for a long, long time, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 5: and and we'll continue to be that way. Before you
- 18:11Speaker 5: know the coach or you know the coach will change,
- 18:13Speaker 5: the players will change, but that that won't change. And
- 18:16Speaker 5: I will just say this, I have I have a
- 18:18Speaker 5: tremendous round respect for for Kyle.
- 18:19Speaker 6: I have tremendous round respect for their rivalry.
- 18:20Speaker 5: That's why we work it every day and we know
- 18:23Speaker 5: that that's you know, the first thing you know on.
- 18:26Speaker 6: Our goal board every year. And so that won't change
- 18:29Speaker 6: the season.
- 18:29Speaker 1: All right, coach, we have a game for you here.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Mikey and Taylor are gonna ask you some questions. The game.
- 18:34Speaker 1: The name of the game is Day or Nay. So uh,
- 18:37Speaker 1: I feel ridiculous explaining this to you, but I have to. Uh.
- 18:41Speaker 1: If it's something you agree with, it's Day. If it's
- 18:43Speaker 1: something you don't agree with, it is Nay. Do we understand?
- 18:46Speaker 1: Are we understanding? Why am I talking like that?
- 18:51Speaker 5: I don't know what the hell's come happen, but I
- 18:55Speaker 5: know the rules.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I've probably played this before, Coach, you've played it before
- 18:59Speaker 1: with us. It's I think I think he played it
- 19:01Speaker 1: the day he was on with us and he was
- 19:03Speaker 1: telling us about he plays tennis to relieve stress. Has
- 19:06Speaker 1: a tennis game?
- 19:06Speaker 6: Cook tennis game is not very good?
- 19:09Speaker 1: Right, it's all right. I promise these questions will be delicate.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I promise you. Or no, okay, I promise Taylor take it.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Away golfing in season day or nay?
- 19:25Speaker 2: Football stakes cooked well done?
- 19:34Speaker 1: How about ketchup on stakes? I want to get involved
- 19:36Speaker 1: in the game. Ketch up on steak? No, my wife
- 19:42Speaker 1: did it first date? I almost left her.
- 19:43Speaker 6: I did you gotta get her some better steaks.
- 19:47Speaker 1: That was the best steakouts in Miami. Taylor going.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Football games played abroad day ornee.
- 19:58Speaker 1: A Nay.
- 20:02Speaker 6: If it's us day for other people, I think it's
- 20:04Speaker 6: good for the.
- 20:04Speaker 5: Sport over the ocean, go play it for else.
- 20:10Speaker 6: It's good for the sport, and I'm glad to see
- 20:11Speaker 6: other people.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Doing day for everyone else. Nay for you, I got
- 20:15Speaker 1: it fair enough. Uh.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Pumpkins, spice lattes, Nay.
- 20:21Speaker 6: I look that my dog. My daughter loves some lottes.
- 20:24Speaker 3: But Taylor, helmet stickers are are getting too out of control.
- 20:32Speaker 3: We've got too many helmet stickers.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Day or Nay.
- 20:36Speaker 6: I'm in the middle on that one. I do agree
- 20:38Speaker 6: with you.
- 20:38Speaker 5: I think that we need to make sure that we're
- 20:41Speaker 5: earning all of our stickers, and so we made sure
- 20:44Speaker 5: we take a look at that. But we're also playing
- 20:46Speaker 5: more games, so you're seeing a lot more stickers on
- 20:48Speaker 5: the helmet. So we try not to just give away
- 20:52Speaker 5: those Buckeye stickers. They should mean something, So it's something
- 20:56Speaker 5: I'm keeping a close eye on. It's like inflation, you
- 20:58Speaker 5: know what I mean, keep an eye on.
- 20:59Speaker 1: It's exactly Coach.
- 21:01Speaker 3: We have a friend, Lucy Rodean, who's our college football
- 21:04Speaker 3: expert here, and she said that if she was a
- 21:06Speaker 3: college football player, she would buy stickers and put them
- 21:09Speaker 3: on her helmet. What would you do if she was
- 21:11Speaker 3: a member of your team and you found somebody putting
- 21:13Speaker 3: their own stickers on the helmet, that would.
- 21:16Speaker 6: Be a bad day.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Days on their own helmet, that would be bad.
- 21:24Speaker 1: All right day? Or nay. Chris Simms told the story.
- 21:27Speaker 1: We talked about it earlier on one of our podcasts.
- 21:30Speaker 1: But delivery drivers not getting out of the car to
- 21:33Speaker 1: bring food to your door because they're afraid of your
- 21:35Speaker 1: dog day or nay, nay.
- 21:38Speaker 6: There's there's no dogs at our house. That's no chance.
- 21:42Speaker 5: My wife is not going to have it, and that's it.
- 21:44Speaker 5: My youngest wants dogs, but she's not going to win
- 21:47Speaker 5: that battle. So that's not an issue at our.
- 21:50Speaker 1: House, all right. But if you had a dog, would
- 21:51Speaker 1: you expect the delivery guy to bring the food like,
- 21:54Speaker 1: and the dog was roaming free in the front yard,
- 21:55Speaker 1: would you expect them to get out of the car
- 21:57Speaker 1: and bring your food to the front door.
- 21:59Speaker 6: No?
- 22:00Speaker 5: No, I mean yeah, it's like, I give my father
- 22:03Speaker 5: in law a lot of credit, he says. Everybody says
- 22:05Speaker 5: their dog doesn't bite. He says, well, how is it
- 22:07Speaker 5: over two million dog bites in the United States every year.
- 22:09Speaker 6: He's got a good point. I don't trust it.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Wise man, got me.
- 22:17Speaker 2: All right, last one for me, coach Indiana is now
- 22:20Speaker 2: a football school, not a basketball school.
- 22:25Speaker 6: No, I mean, listen, listen.
- 22:27Speaker 5: Uh, you know you got to give them a lot
- 22:29Speaker 5: of credit and what they did and how they did
- 22:32Speaker 5: and uh, and how they played last year, and hey,
- 22:34Speaker 5: they're defending national champs. So that's it, you know, much
- 22:38Speaker 5: respect and and you know, looking forward to playing them
- 22:40Speaker 5: this year. There you know that that they've really changed
- 22:43Speaker 5: so much about what they've done just in terms of
- 22:46Speaker 5: you know, the home environment and so you know, we're
- 22:49Speaker 5: expecting them to be really strong, just like they were
- 22:51Speaker 5: last year.
- 22:51Speaker 6: And hey, they're defending champs, so we got to go.
- 22:53Speaker 6: We gotta go play them.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Coach, how did you feel about the game? We're done?
- 22:56Speaker 1: Now you're done, the game's over. How'd you feel it
- 22:58Speaker 1: wasn't it? It was fine? Right?
- 23:00Speaker 6: So that was fine? That was easy though.
- 23:02Speaker 1: That was.
- 23:04Speaker 6: A lot tougher questions than those.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Yes, well, no, we don't do difficult questions here. That's
- 23:08Speaker 1: why we want to have you on more often. Okay,
- 23:10Speaker 1: we will not press you on anything. I probot you
- 23:13Speaker 1: for day or night. Of course. That's how we We'll
- 23:17Speaker 1: talk to you next week. Okay, right, coach, real quick
- 23:22Speaker 1: on the way out. I do want to ask this,
- 23:24Speaker 1: and I'm being serious. I know you don't pay attention
- 23:26Speaker 1: to the AP preseason pol I get it. I understand why.
- 23:30Speaker 1: But did you take any delight in seeing that no
- 23:32Speaker 1: SEC team got any first place votes for the first
- 23:35Speaker 1: time ever?
- 23:38Speaker 5: No?
- 23:38Speaker 6: Again, I don't. I don't think people know. I don't
- 23:40Speaker 6: think they know what these teams look like.
- 23:41Speaker 5: And then I think when you look at last year's
- 23:44Speaker 5: someone showed me the preseason poll from last year, it
- 23:46Speaker 5: was nothing really to what it looked like at the
- 23:48Speaker 5: end of the season. So I just think there's so
- 23:50Speaker 5: many unknowns, like let's just go play some football. But
- 23:53Speaker 5: but I do think like it doesn't matter what happened
- 23:56Speaker 5: last year. Doesn't you know that the past doesn't really matter?
- 23:59Speaker 5: That question is like, all right, what are we doing
- 24:01Speaker 5: this year in our conference? We want to be the
- 24:03Speaker 5: best conference in the Country's certainly we've won the national
- 24:05Speaker 5: championship last three years and we can all argue, but
- 24:07Speaker 5: what matters is what we put on the field this
- 24:09Speaker 5: year and.
- 24:09Speaker 6: Then where we're going. And I think our conference is
- 24:12Speaker 6: very very well positioned moving forward.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Ye, coach, we appreciate this, good luck this season. Hopefully
- 24:16Speaker 1: we'll talk to you again down the road. We always
- 24:18Speaker 1: enjoy having you on and good luck to you and
- 24:21Speaker 1: the kids this season.
- 24:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I appreciate you guys, Go bucks. Thanks all right, man,
