- 1:49Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 1:51Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 1:54Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 1:58Speaker 1: about the great music cities of all time. Okay, We're also,
- 2:05Speaker 1: of course talking about our disgrace Land full episode on
- 2:08Speaker 1: Bobby Brown and some of the research that went into
- 2:11Speaker 1: making that episode, and of course your voicemails, text and more,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and as always a whole lot of rosie.
- 2:16Speaker 2: All right, Discus, let's get into it, all.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Right, disc goes. I don't think the world thinks of
- 2:34Speaker 1: Bobby Brown as a Boston artist, because Bobby Brown transcended
- 2:39Speaker 1: his hometown long ago, became a global superstar. He relocated
- 2:44Speaker 1: to Atlanta to copulate with ghosts. You can listen to
- 2:47Speaker 1: the full episode of Disgrace and to hear what I'm
- 2:49Speaker 1: talking about there, and you know, Boston kind of let
- 2:53Speaker 1: go of Bobby Brown a little bit too. I think,
- 2:55Speaker 1: I guess I don't know. I'm from Boston, and throughout
- 2:57Speaker 1: the making of this episode, I barely thought of Bobby
- 2:59Speaker 1: Brown as a Boston artists, even though part of it
- 3:01Speaker 1: is set there. But he is, He's Roxbury and he's
- 3:05Speaker 1: eighties combat Zone at his core. I started thinking of
- 3:09Speaker 1: Bobby this morning as a Boston artist. Though Bobby's first band,
- 3:14Speaker 1: New Edition, an incredible boy band before we even called
- 3:17Speaker 1: them boy bands. It was a group that gave way
- 3:19Speaker 1: eventually to Bell Biv Devaux, and a group that, had
- 3:23Speaker 1: they never happened, New Kids in the Bloc likely never
- 3:25Speaker 1: would have happen either. And if that didn't happen, If
- 3:28Speaker 1: New Kids didn't happen, then Marky Mark wouldn't have happened,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and then Boogie Nights probably wouldn't been as awesome. And
- 3:33Speaker 1: I'm getting off track, but you can start to see
- 3:35Speaker 1: the point that I'm trying to make Boston music. Boston
- 3:38Speaker 1: has an incredible music lineage, an incredible music history, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: is always has been an incredible music scene. I can't
- 3:48Speaker 1: really speak to the current scene. I no longer live
- 3:51Speaker 1: in Massachusetts full time, and even before I left, the
- 3:57Speaker 1: scene just had changed, like most music scenes had changed,
- 4:00Speaker 1: sort of leading up to COVID and then of course
- 4:02Speaker 1: during and after COVID. But you cannot mess with Boston's
- 4:07Speaker 1: place as a music scene in history and how it
- 4:11Speaker 1: stacks up to other cities other than New York City.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Though I can't think of a better music city than Boston.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I'm putting New York City aside because nothing can compare
- 4:20Speaker 1: musically with New York City. It's where jazz, disco, punk, rock,
- 4:24Speaker 1: hip hop were invented. Hell, it's probably even where pop
- 4:28Speaker 1: music was invented. At the very least, it's where pop
- 4:31Speaker 1: was refined and honed to become the cultural juggernaut that
- 4:34Speaker 1: it became in the twenty century. But back to Boston.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Let's put New York City aside and ask the question,
- 4:40Speaker 1: what is the greatest music scene of all time? Okay, Seattle,
- 4:47Speaker 1: that's gonna be what most of you are going to
- 4:48Speaker 1: say for Seattle, Okay, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Memphis, Chicago, Philadelphia.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm quickly running out of options, Philly, Gamble and Huff, Hollinoates,
- 5:00Speaker 1: low Ka, Kannie and k and Dagger. Who else is there?
- 5:02Speaker 1: I'm being a smart ass, but off the top of
- 5:04Speaker 1: my head, I'm finding it hard to come up with
- 5:06Speaker 1: other notable artists from Philly, Frank Stallone, Chicago, The Blues, Okay,
- 5:12Speaker 1: you got a point, Chess Records, etc. Muddy Waters all
- 5:16Speaker 1: the way to Steve Albini. I can see the argument
- 5:19Speaker 1: at least, but I'm not buying it. Memphis. Strong argument
- 5:23Speaker 1: here because of course of Sun Records and Elvis Presley.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But after Stax Records and into the eighties and the
- 5:29Speaker 1: nineties into the now, how much hustle and flow can
- 5:33Speaker 1: we actually ride on? New Orleans. I'm sorry, but jazz
- 5:36Speaker 1: unfortunately is not influential enough when it comes to the
- 5:39Speaker 1: zeitgeist when it comes to modern day culture of the
- 5:42Speaker 1: last twenty thirty years. Lil Wayne, no disrespect, He's huge
- 5:45Speaker 1: in all, but I'm not buying New Orleans. Los Angeles though,
- 5:49Speaker 1: super strong argument. You got big bands, West Coast Swing,
- 5:54Speaker 1: Hollywood Vampires, punk rock, the most violent hardcore scene ever
- 5:58Speaker 1: probably hair metal, Guns n' roses alone, NWA, all the
- 6:02Speaker 1: gangs to Wrap, to say nothing of Los Lobos, and
- 6:05Speaker 1: I'm sure a bunch of different musical genres that have
- 6:08Speaker 1: had influence on popular culture and very significant ways. And
- 6:11Speaker 1: I'm not even thinking of at the moment, but overall,
- 6:16Speaker 1: h kind of spotty. La is the closest, though. I
- 6:19Speaker 1: think the Gibs Boston a run for its hard earned
- 6:22Speaker 1: working class money. Seattle, I'm sorry, but no fucking way.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Seattle was a blip okay, like like a tweet storm,
- 6:32Speaker 1: very loud, very powerful and impactful, but ultimately not a
- 6:36Speaker 1: lot behind it and not for a very long time.
- 6:40Speaker 1: But let's run it down, okay, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I guess you want to call him a Seattle band,
- 6:46Speaker 1: mud Honey, the greatest Seattle band of all time, The Melvins,
- 6:50Speaker 1: Alison Chains, Temple of the Mother, Love Bone Dog, the Gets,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and I think I'm done. Actually no, not Kenny g Sir,
- 6:56Speaker 1: mix a Lot, Macamore. Who's who am I missing? I
- 7:01Speaker 1: know I left off my list some subpop bands that
- 7:05Speaker 1: I should be mentioning, some good ones. They're just I
- 7:08Speaker 1: can't think of off the top of my head right now.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But you know, Seattle's impact is very much excuse me,
- 7:15Speaker 1: Seattle's impact is very much one time, really one era,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I should say, and I know, I know, it's kind.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Of a big era.
- 7:24Speaker 1: It's kind of a very super important era and impactful era.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I've acknowledged that, but over the course of time, it
- 7:33Speaker 1: does not compare to Boston. With Boston, we're starting in
- 7:39Speaker 1: and around the sixties, early sixties, and we're going all
- 7:42Speaker 1: the way up into the oats okay of just producing
- 7:47Speaker 1: wildly influential, great bands, so in no particular order of awesomeness.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Just you know, before as I list these right, just
- 7:55Speaker 1: to put a little little shine on what I just said,
- 7:58Speaker 1: there just one more thing when I list these bands,
- 8:00Speaker 1: ask yourself, which other city can boast such an impressive
- 8:03Speaker 1: list of bands that weren't just subjectively great, like from
- 8:06Speaker 1: my opinion, but that actually had an effect on culture.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Again that they affected culture, They affected the Zeikeist, they
- 8:11Speaker 1: were on the charts, they were featured in films, television,
- 8:14Speaker 1: had mega influence over our artists from other cities. I'm
- 8:17Speaker 1: talking about the fact that Nirvana wouldn't exist without the Pixies.
- 8:21Speaker 1: But anyway, here's the list. Let's start there with the Pixies. Okay, Pixies,
- 8:24Speaker 1: Dinosaur Junior, Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richmond, The Cars, Boston, Aerosmith, Lemonheads,
- 8:31Speaker 1: Blake Babies, Juliana Halfield, Dropkick, Murphy's Mighty Mighty, Bostones, Morphine
- 8:35Speaker 1: Till Tuesday In Amy Man, Mission of Burma, Slapshot, Bane, Buffalo,
- 8:38Speaker 1: Tom The Remains, Looked Them Up, The Real Kids, That
- 8:41Speaker 1: Jay Fucking Giles Band, Del Fuego's Donna Summer, James Taylor,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Come Gangstar, New Kids on the Mother Humping Block, Converge,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and of course New Edition In the subject of this
- 8:49Speaker 1: week's episode, Bobby Brown. So, I want to ask the question,
- 8:55Speaker 1: which city, historically speaking, has the greatest music scene? That's
- 9:00Speaker 1: question I want to ask. But it feels like LA
- 9:03Speaker 1: might be the only city that comes close. Someone from
- 9:05Speaker 1: Los Angeles give me a call. Let me know why
- 9:08Speaker 1: La is a better scene than Boston. I can almost
- 9:11Speaker 1: make the argument myself, but I'm not quite getting there.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Anyone else that thinks the Boston list is whay, Hit
- 9:18Speaker 1: me up. Tell me why you know whatever Omaha's music
- 9:20Speaker 1: scene or Portland or wherever else is better than Boston.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Old head Boston music scenesirs. I know you hate me.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Call in let me know what an uneducated poser I
- 9:28Speaker 1: am for not including the Nets, Big Dipper, the neighborhoods.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I see you fuckers. Okay, it was an accident. There's
- 9:32Speaker 1: just too many great bands and I just mentioned him anyway,
- 9:35Speaker 1: So get in touch all of you. I want to
- 9:36Speaker 1: know greatest music scenes in history, or why your scene
- 9:42Speaker 1: is better than Boston and why Boston scene sucks, whatever
- 9:45Speaker 1: it is, Hit me up and let me know. Six
- 9:47Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. I'll
- 9:49Speaker 1: be back in a flash, all right. As I mentioned
- 10:12Speaker 1: at the top of the episode, we got some brand
- 10:14Speaker 1: new Disgraceland merchandise. If you're an All Access member, you
- 10:17Speaker 1: already know about this because you've got a preview and
- 10:20Speaker 1: a first crack to snag the stuff last week. We've
- 10:22Speaker 1: opened it up to everybody, however, and you can now
- 10:24Speaker 1: order right now by going to disgracelamdpod dot com, slash
- 10:28Speaker 1: merch or you can just hit the link in the
- 10:29Speaker 1: show notes for this episode. There you'll find the og
- 10:33Speaker 1: Disgraceland black T shirt which comes with a pin, and
- 10:36Speaker 1: of course, the new rock rolla shirt inspired by the
- 10:38Speaker 1: classic Coca Cola logo, which also comes with a pin
- 10:41Speaker 1: or grab the classic enamel zombie Elvispin. Again. That's disgracelampod
- 10:45Speaker 1: dot com slash merch cops some cool stuff as soon
- 10:48Speaker 1: as you can, because it's gonna go. It always goes.
- 10:51Speaker 1: It goes quick, and then I take forever to restock it.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I'm trying to do better to restock it this time.
- 10:55Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about sources for this week's episode
- 10:57Speaker 1: on Bobby Brown. Our primary source is a book that
- 11:00Speaker 1: came out in twenty sixteen, and it's a whopper. It's
- 11:04Speaker 1: called Every Little Step My Story, and of course is
- 11:06Speaker 1: written by Bobby Brown himself, along with Nick Chilla's Chili's
- 11:11Speaker 1: Child's I don't know how to pronounce it. Nick, I'm sorry.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I know you're an award winning journalist and I know
- 11:16Speaker 1: I should know. But anyways, Bobby Lay's it all out,
- 11:18Speaker 1: the good, the bad, and believe it or not, probably
- 11:22Speaker 1: the most batshit crazy story that we've ever uncovered in
- 11:27Speaker 1: any episode of Disgraceland. Um more than one, actually, okay,
- 11:34Speaker 1: don't I don't even know what is. What is the
- 11:35Speaker 1: craziest the sex with the ghosts are making chicken with cocaine,
- 11:39Speaker 1: having sexual intercourse with the ghosts in is Haunted Atlanta Mansion,
- 11:42Speaker 1: of course, partying in Japan with Mike Tyson the night
- 11:45Speaker 1: before the heavyweight champ lost that fight the Buster Douglas,
- 11:49Speaker 1: thank you very much. Bobby Brown hooking up with his
- 11:52Speaker 1: sister's friend in jail so much, it's just it's just nuts,
- 11:57Speaker 1: it's just crazy. To give you an idea, here's a
- 11:59Speaker 1: direct quote from the book, all right, quote one memorable night,
- 12:03Speaker 1: one of the ghosts descended from the ceiling and had
- 12:05Speaker 1: sex with me. After you stop laughing, I need you
- 12:08Speaker 1: to hear what I'm saying, because I'm not making this up.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And let me add this. This was before I ever
- 12:14Speaker 1: touched any drug besides weed and alcohol. That, of course,
- 12:17Speaker 1: is Bobby Brown talking, not me. Bobby then goes on
- 12:20Speaker 1: to describe in the book the sex that he had
- 12:23Speaker 1: with the ghost in great detail. I swear I'm not
- 12:25Speaker 1: making this up. All right now, seeing as this book
- 12:28Speaker 1: was written by Bobby Brown and it's one hundred percent
- 12:31Speaker 1: Bobby's pov throughout, you won't be surprised to find out
- 12:34Speaker 1: that a big part of the narrative is trying to
- 12:36Speaker 1: prove that Bobby wasn't the bad boy that he was
- 12:39Speaker 1: made out to be the bad boy by the press,
- 12:42Speaker 1: by the media, by other people, that his bad boy
- 12:45Speaker 1: image was, in his own words, a label that feels
- 12:48Speaker 1: two one dimensional. Now, of course, there is sufficient evidence
- 12:52Speaker 1: out there, a lot of which happened out loud in
- 12:55Speaker 1: the public eye, that would prove otherwise that Bobby Brown
- 12:59Speaker 1: was indeed a bad boy. So, of course, in our
- 13:03Speaker 1: research we balanced out Bobby's book with other points of view,
- 13:06Speaker 1: profiles written on him during his reign on the pop charts,
- 13:08Speaker 1: video interviews, including the explosive one that we documented in
- 13:12Speaker 1: this episode where he blows up when an interviewer calls
- 13:15Speaker 1: his mom a riot. You can find that online, that's
- 13:17Speaker 1: easy to search out. And most importantly, the perspective of
- 13:20Speaker 1: his former wife, Whitney Houston, who gave a powerful interview
- 13:23Speaker 1: to Oprah Winfrey in two thousand and nine, just a
- 13:25Speaker 1: few years before she died. In that interview, that perspective
- 13:29Speaker 1: of Whitney's was crucial for the conclusion of our narrative.
- 13:32Speaker 1: If you heard the episode, you're going to know what
- 13:33Speaker 1: I mean. Go check that out, all right, Let me
- 13:35Speaker 1: know what you think. Let me know what you think
- 13:37Speaker 1: of our take on Bobby Brown. This balancing this one
- 13:41Speaker 1: was important to us. You know, when I did the
- 13:42Speaker 1: Whitney Houston episode back in gosh, when was that two
- 13:46Speaker 1: thousand and twenty one or something like that. Twenty twenty,
- 13:49Speaker 1: might even be twenty nineteen, it doesn't matter. But when
- 13:52Speaker 1: I was researching Whitney Houston, I was like, oh my god,
- 13:54Speaker 1: there's a Bobby Brown episode here as well. A lot
- 13:57Speaker 1: of the research that I did on Whitney Houston, there's
- 13:59Speaker 1: a lot of fingers being pointed at Bobby Brown. Nothing
- 14:04Speaker 1: is that binary to me. However, we tried to balance
- 14:07Speaker 1: it out here, but still it was. It was tough,
- 14:09Speaker 1: and you know, as someone who actually really uh W,
- 14:14Speaker 1: how do I put this, appreciates Bobby Brown as a
- 14:16Speaker 1: pop star? You know, I don't know. It's like, you
- 14:20Speaker 1: don't want to just do this completely one sided depiction
- 14:23Speaker 1: of the person. But this one was hurt not too
- 14:26Speaker 1: But anyways, let us know how you think we landed
- 14:28Speaker 1: the plane six one seven nine oh six six six
- 14:31Speaker 1: three eight. And while you're at it, get in touch,
- 14:34Speaker 1: send us a voicemail, leave us text. I want to
- 14:37Speaker 1: know if Bobby Brown's hometown of Boston is the greatest
- 14:41Speaker 1: music scene of all time. It's to a voicemail here,
- 14:44Speaker 1: this one from the two to oh six on Bobby Brown.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Hey Jake, what's up? It's Tony from the two oh six.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Just listen to the Bobby Brown album My Prerogative is
- 14:56Speaker 3: one of the greatest R and B new jet swing
- 15:00Speaker 3: albums of all time. But there was something in there
- 15:03Speaker 3: that I wanted to pick your brain at. When you
- 15:06Speaker 3: talked about Mike Tyson losing because he was partying with
- 15:11Speaker 3: Bobby Brown the night before. There's always been this conspiracy
- 15:16Speaker 3: that the referee essentially allowed Buster Douglas to have more
- 15:21Speaker 3: time to get up, because if you look at that
- 15:23Speaker 3: fight when Tyson locked him down, you know the referee
- 15:28Speaker 3: gave him more great time to get up, Like when
- 15:30Speaker 3: the rest counts, he's like one, two, back up, Mike, Mike,
- 15:33Speaker 3: I need you to back up, three four, Mike, I said,
- 15:37Speaker 3: back up, I really need you to back up five six.
- 15:40Speaker 3: So where you see Tyson gett knocked out. Tyson's trying
- 15:45Speaker 3: to get up and he's trying to grab his mouth
- 15:46Speaker 3: piece and everything. So there's always been this conspiracy. Even
- 15:50Speaker 3: Mike talked about this himself and his One band show
- 15:53Speaker 3: just curious to know your thoughts on that. I know
- 15:55Speaker 3: you did a Mike Tyson episode a few a while back.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Hopefully you'll release that as a rewind episode in the future.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Much love and hope you some's going good.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Peace, Hey Tony from the two oh six interesting take,
- 16:10Speaker 1: and to be perfectly honest with you, I've never really
- 16:14Speaker 1: I don't know about this. I don't know about the
- 16:16Speaker 1: ref throwing it here from Mike. I wouldn't be surprised. However,
- 16:20Speaker 1: nothing would shock me when it comes to Mike Tyson,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and nothing would shock me when it comes to boxing,
- 16:25Speaker 1: especially in the eighties or early nineties, whenever this was,
- 16:29Speaker 1: things were a little how do you say, looser? So
- 16:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna check that out. I'm on probably YouTube that
- 16:34Speaker 1: tonight and try to come to my own conclusion. Appreciate
- 16:38Speaker 1: the call, Thank you. Let's do some text here. Let's
- 16:42Speaker 1: see what we got here on the old message box
- 16:45Speaker 1: eight one eight right, say hey, Jake Mickey here the
- 16:48Speaker 1: Bobby Brown episode was ace. I'm a big Bobby fan
- 16:50Speaker 1: and a huge New Edition fan, so I knew my
- 16:52Speaker 1: fair share about him. But then I listened to this
- 16:54Speaker 1: episode and got educated even more. Good stuff, My man,
- 16:56Speaker 1: keep doing what you're doing. Thank you, Mickey, appreciate it.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I love your you of the word ace in the
- 17:02Speaker 1: text five to four to oh rights And Okay, So
- 17:04Speaker 1: here's an episode idea, the Adventures of Burt Reynolds. You
- 17:07Speaker 1: want to talk about icons, well, at least for you
- 17:09Speaker 1: and me, he is one of the biggest. Just a thought.
- 17:11Speaker 1: It's a good thought. The history of Burt Reynolds. I
- 17:14Speaker 1: kind of know a little bit about it. I know
- 17:15Speaker 1: a little bit about it. I'm not going to tell
- 17:17Speaker 1: you why because I'm saving that for when I actually
- 17:19Speaker 1: do an episode on Burt Reynolds. But I have a
- 17:23Speaker 1: very personal connection to Burt Reynolds and Bert in his life.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And again I'm gonna save that one, so that will
- 17:29Speaker 1: be coming up at some point. Two of seven rights
- 17:31Speaker 1: in Tiger Woods, Anthony Bourdain not a disgraced an athlete,
- 17:35Speaker 1: but still I think he'd be a great golf buddy.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And Lawrence Taylor. I haven't heard you do an episode
- 17:40Speaker 1: on him, but if you haven't done one of you should.
- 17:42Speaker 1: His story is wild. Of course, that is an answer
- 17:44Speaker 1: to we were asking what celebrity force and would you
- 17:47Speaker 1: put together? Tiger Woods, of course would be at the
- 17:49Speaker 1: top of anybody's list, and Lawrence Taylor will certainly be
- 17:53Speaker 1: in the disgrace Land feed at some point. We asked
- 17:56Speaker 1: last week in the after party, we had that O. J.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Simpson episode, and I kind of made the point that
- 18:01Speaker 1: for people who grew up in the nineties, the OJ Chase,
- 18:06Speaker 1: at least before nine to eleven, the OJ Chase, the
- 18:09Speaker 1: televised White Bronco Chase was kind of like our our
- 18:13Speaker 1: Kennedy assassination. It was kind of like you knew where
- 18:16Speaker 1: you were. Everyone knew where they were. I asked the question,
- 18:18Speaker 1: were you guys were? I got a bunch of tecks
- 18:19Speaker 1: on this. I'll answer more in the exclusive bonus portion
- 18:23Speaker 1: of this episode, but I want to get here. Eight
- 18:25Speaker 1: Poho two hits us. Where was I during OJ's Bronco Chase.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I was in my dorm room up at Chaplin College
- 18:30Speaker 1: in Burlington, Vermont. This is Kelly from Brattleboro, Vermont. Your
- 18:34Speaker 1: podcast helped get me through my workdays. Much appreciated. Thanks Kelly,
- 18:38Speaker 1: I appreciate you. What do you do for work? Text
- 18:40Speaker 1: us back, let us know all right six one seven
- 18:43Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight voicemail and text again. Guys,
- 18:47Speaker 1: I want to know about your music scenes, even if
- 18:49Speaker 1: your music scene cannot compete with Boston. That's my dog,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you hear my dog. I left the door to my
- 18:56Speaker 1: studio open outside the booth. That's Dusty. I think she's okay,
- 19:01Speaker 1: maybe someone's at the door. I'm gonna take a break.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I'll be back in a flash. All right, we got
- 19:20Speaker 1: interrupted there at the end of that block. Apologize for that.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I was about to say, even if your music scene
- 19:28Speaker 1: cannot compete with Boston's, or Los Angeles or New York's,
- 19:32Speaker 1: no one's can with New York. Like I said, hit
- 19:34Speaker 1: us up and just let me know where you're from.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Let me know what music scene you came up in
- 19:39Speaker 1: that you have all the warm, fuzzy nostalgic feelings for
- 19:42Speaker 1: what bands who were going to see let me know
- 19:45Speaker 1: six one seven, nine oh six sixty six three eight.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And of course I want to know if you think
- 19:48Speaker 1: you've seen this better than Boston or what the best
- 19:51Speaker 1: music scene in the history of music is, because it's
- 19:53Speaker 1: a fascinating topic for me. All Right, anyhow, we're back,
- 19:56Speaker 1: and as I promised at the top of the show,
- 19:58Speaker 1: I wanted to tell you this wild story about Bbby

- 20:34Speaker 1: course everything is going to be ad free. Our exclusive
- 20:38Speaker 1: episode this month is on Waylon Jennings and here's a clip.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Check it out. August twenty fourth, nineteen seventy seven, American
- 20:49Speaker 1: Sound Recording Studio, Nashville, little over a week since the
- 20:53Speaker 1: King himself, Elvis Presley, took his last seat on a
- 20:56Speaker 1: porcelain throne. Whalan was eager to finish Lane down this
- 21:00Speaker 1: harmony track on his wife Jesse's new song, equally eager
- 21:04Speaker 1: to then dip into the stash of cocaine sitting at
- 21:06Speaker 1: his feet one kilo he just had sent to him
- 21:09Speaker 1: through the mail drugs via the United States Postal System,
- 21:13Speaker 1: just the sort of brass ball's outlaw move that only
- 21:16Speaker 1: Waylon Jennings could pull off. Or so the thinking went.
- 21:22Speaker 1: On the other side of the double glass wall in
- 21:24Speaker 1: the control room, where Waylan's drummer Richie Albright, was running
- 21:27Speaker 1: the recording session, the outside door flew open. Two men
- 21:31Speaker 1: stepped inside, dagents who had been tracking Willeland's package of cocaine.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Richie was fast, he thought, fast, acted fast. He leaned
- 21:40Speaker 1: back against the recording console and pressed his hand down
- 21:43Speaker 1: on the talkback button. Now this is an important detail.
- 21:48Speaker 1: The American Sound Recording studio was equipped with a Harrison
- 21:51Speaker 1: mixing console, which, unlike most mixing consoles at the time,
- 21:55Speaker 1: had a talkback button that, when pressed, allowed both the
- 21:59Speaker 1: control room whe Richie was in the studio room where
- 22:02Speaker 1: Whalen was to simultaneously talk to and hear each other.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Other consoles only allowed for one way communication, so Richie Albright,
- 22:10Speaker 1: without the dea agent's knowing was allowing Whalen through the
- 22:14Speaker 1: headphones he was wearing in the studio to hear this
- 22:17Speaker 1: entire conversation with the FEDS as it unfolded. So Richie says,
- 22:22Speaker 1: can I help you? Boys? This is a closed session.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Agent number one goes, what happened to that package that
- 22:27Speaker 1: was just delivered? Richie goes, do y'all have a warrant?
- 22:30Speaker 1: Agent number one says, we have a warrant for Whalon
- 22:32Speaker 1: Jennings's arrest. Richie, listen, boys, I'd love to help you,
- 22:36Speaker 1: but we're right in the middle of one last vocal take.
- 22:38Speaker 1: This place is like two hundred bucks an hour. Caho
- 22:40Speaker 1: just finished the take, and then Whaleen is all yours.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Agent number two looked at Agent number one and gave
- 22:45Speaker 1: a curt nod of approval. Richie ran the tape from
- 22:49Speaker 1: the top and Whalen began to sing again. Halfway through
- 22:53Speaker 1: the chorus, Richie stopped the tape and pressed on the
- 22:56Speaker 1: Harrison talkback button again. Whalen, I'm sorry, but there's something
- 23:00Speaker 1: wrong with your microphone. Let me come in there real
- 23:02Speaker 1: quick and swap it out for another. The agents waited impatiently,
- 23:07Speaker 1: Whichie slipped into the studio room, replaced the mic, and
- 23:10Speaker 1: then very carefully, without anyone noticing, remove the bags of
- 23:14Speaker 1: cocaine from the box at Whalan's feet and slid them
- 23:17Speaker 1: down the front of his jeans. Minutes later, he was
- 23:21Speaker 1: flushing the contents down the toilet in the studio bathroom
- 23:24Speaker 1: while the DEA agents grilled Whalan where I come from?
- 23:28Speaker 1: Whalan said, possession means got it, and you boys ain't
- 23:32Speaker 1: got it?
- 23:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 23:34Speaker 1: That was a clip from our brand new episode on
