- 1:10Jonathan: Hello, Dork Squad.
- 1:12Jonathan: I'm Jonathan Cormur, and you're listening to Dorktales Storytime, the podcast for kids and their pop culture-loving grown-ups.
- 1:23Theme Song: It's a beautiful day for a story adventure and glory, new friends and old ones too.
- 1:30Theme Song: It's an excellent day to get swept away in a tale, so let us regale you.
- 1:55Redge: Jonathan!
- 1:57Jonathan: In the kitchen
- 1:59Redge: Oh, there you are
- 2:01Jonathan: Yes, you're right on time.
- 2:04Redge: Right on time for what?
- 2:07Jonathan: Redge, don't tell me you forgot.
- 2:09Redge: Forgot what, mate?
- 2:11Redge: Ah yes, that's it.
- 2:13Redge: I came here today because last night I left a piece of lemon meringue pie in your refrigerator.
- 2:20Redge: And uh I need that back.
- 2:23Redge: Pie is important, you know.
- 2:27Jonathan: What?
- 2:27Jonathan: Redge Look, I won't deny that pie is important.
- 2:31Jonathan: But last night you told me you'd return today to help me make this soup
- 2:38Redge: I did?
- 2:40Jonathan: Yes.
- 2:41Jonathan: We had an entire conversation about how I grew too many leeks in my garden, and you have too many potatoes at home.
- 2:49Jonathan: How are we going to make potato leek soup now?
- 2:53Redge: And you don't have any potatoes here?
- 2:55Redge: Not even out buried in your vegetable garden?
- 2:59Jonathan: I told you I used them all in my mashed potato art project last week.
- 3:05Redge: Ah yes, the epic potato castle you built.
- 3:09Redge: Star chopolis
- 3:11Jonathan: It had a gravy moat.
- 3:13Redge: And it was brilliant.
- 3:15Redge: But our soup making completely slipped my mind.
- 3:18Redge: I was one hundred percent fixated on pie, and must have well you know
- 3:26Jonathan: not been listening last night?
- 3:28Redge: Well not exactly.
- 3:32Jonathan: Mr.
- 3:32Jonathan: Redge, this soup was supposed to be a team effort.
- 3:36Jonathan: Now we'll just have to make up a different recipe.
- 3:39Jonathan: Let's see, uh maybe a leek bisque with uh hmm an essence of cauliflower, and a dash of creme fraiche.
- 3:52Jonathan: Arguably still tasty, but not the creamy potato leek I was hungry for.
- 3:59Redge: Aww.
- 4:00Redge: I'm sorry, friend.
- 4:02Jonathan: You you're sorry, you're you're sorry?
- 4:05Jonathan: Already?
- 4:07Redge: Ooh, terribly.
- 4:08Redge: I know how much potato leek soup means to you.
- 4:13Jonathan: But I haven't even told you a story to emphasize my point.
- 4:18Redge: Well, yes, I I realize I've let you down, and I need to listen better instead of focusing on my own pie related plots.
- 4:28Jonathan: Ah, so you have been following my story crumbs.
- 4:33Redge: Yes, I'm not always so attuned to the lessons from your tales, but I have learned what it means to be a good friend.
- 4:41Redge: And last night I must have been distracted Oh, hang on.
- 4:46Redge: Do you still want to tell your story to make your point?
- 4:50Jonathan: What you mean it?
- 4:51Jonathan: You won't zone out or interrupt?
- 4:55Redge: Well I can't promise I won't interrupt but uh I can promise I'll listen closely and try to relate.
- 5:04Jonathan: Oh okay.
- 5:05Jonathan: This is something I can work with.
- 5:08Jonathan: Alright, so uh the story I want to tell you is called The Little Red Hen.
- 5:16Redge: Ooh, it's about me the little Redge Hen
- 5:20Jonathan: Oh uh sorry, uh I think you misheard me, Redge.
- 5:24Jonathan: It's red
- 5:27Redge: Right, I heard you.
- 5:29Redge: I'm over here on the Redge of my seat.
- 5:33Jonathan: Wait, are you
- 5:35Redge: Redging my bets?
- 5:37Redge: Hogging the spotlight?
- 5:39Jonathan: Haha I was going to say hijacking my story to make it about you!
- 5:47Redge: What?
- 5:47Redge: I have a short attention span.
- 5:50Redge: It's just my way of keeping my interest.
- 5:53Redge: You'd rather I listen quietly and not be myself?
- 5:58Jonathan: No, no, of course not.
- 5:59Jonathan: I I'd never ask you to be anything but you, Mr Redge.
- 6:06Redge: It's just how my brain works.
- 6:08Redge: At times I need to give myself a little nudge in the noggin.
- 6:14Jonathan: Okay The little Redge hen it is.
- 6:19Jonathan: Once upon a time there was a little Redge hen pecking away in the garden.
- 6:25Jonathan: The hen was next to a big red barn, and came upon some seeds.
- 6:31Redge: Ooh that grew to be a magic bean stalk which the hen climbed, finding a giant at the top, and then the hen robbed the giant Yes, yes, I've heard this one before.
- 6:44Jonathan: Well, it's not so complicated, Redge.
- 6:47Redge: What do you mean?
- 6:49Jonathan: Redge Hen found the seeds and decided to plant them, asking friends around the barn.
- 6:55Little Redge Hen: Who will help me plant this wheat?
- 7:00Jonathan: You see, in this story, the seeds are just for growing wheat.
- 7:06Redge: Ah the details are getting grain-ular.
- 7:15Jonathan: Done?
- 7:16Redge: Oh I crack myself up but please glu- ten-ue.
- 7:23Jonathan: So little Redge Hen asked friends to help plant the wheat.
- 7:33Redge: Oh let me guess.
- 7:35Redge: They were reluctant to join the labor.
- 7:39Jonathan: Bingo!
- 7:41Unbelievably Unconcerned Cow: Hm not I
- 7:45Jonathan: Moo'd the unbelievably unconcerned cow
- 7:51Overly Obstinate Ostrich: Not I
- 7:52Jonathan: Cooed the overly obstinate ostrich and
- 7:58Sourly Stubborn Sheep: not I
- 8:01Jonathan: Baa'ed the sourly stubborn sheep
- 8:05Redge: Some friends!
- 8:07Jonathan: Indeed they were only focused on themselves.
- 8:11Jonathan: So Little Redge Hen set out to poke the seeds into the ground alone.
- 8:15Jonathan: But when the grain had grown taller than the mailbox, Little Redge Hen again sought out companions for assistance.
- 8:25Little Redge Hen: Hello, friends I've planted and grown the wheat.
- 8:30Little Redge Hen: Who will help me harvest it?
- 8:33Jonathan: The unbelievably unconcerned cow mooed
- 8:38Unbelievably Unconcerned Cow: not I
- 8:41Jonathan: and the overly obstinate ostrich fluffed out their feathers with a
- 8:48Overly Obstinate Ostrich: not I
- 8:50Jonathan: Finally, the sourly, stubborn sheep looked up from munching on grass with a
- 9:00Sourly Stubborn Sheep: not I
- 9:03Redge: Can I just say there is quite a selection of animals in this barn.
- 9:08Redge: I mean an ostrich?
- 9:11Jonathan: Well there are ostrich farms, mister Redge
- 9:14Redge: That hang out with cows
- 9:17Jonathan: Hm well unconcerned cows and obstinate ostriches tend to get along.
- 9:23Jonathan: But regardless, Little Redge Hen was alone again, picking every wheat stalk, pulling a full wagon to the mill, and grinding the wheat into flour.
- 9:35Redge: Ooh my goodness, I had no idea growing wheat and turning it into bread could be so complicated.
- 9:42Jonathan: Well, yes, there are many steps to making a loaf of bread.
- 9:46Jonathan: The little Redge hen wanted to make bread.
- 9:50Redge: Yes
- 9:52Jonathan: but couldn't find anyone to help.
- 9:55Little Redge Hen: Ooh I've planted the wheat and milled it into flour.
- 10:00Little Redge Hen: Now who'll help me bake it into bread?
- 10:05Redge: Oh Jonathan, Jonathan, I I believe I have a handle on their responses.
- 10:11Jonathan: You have?
- 10:13Redge: Yes.
- 10:13Redge: Let me guess the unbelievably unconcerned cow said nooooooo, and the over the top so over it ostrich hissed, Meh I'm so tired I couldn't possibly.
- 10:40Redge: And then that sheep, that fluffy fiend who loved grasses and grains, and should at least have understood from time hunting for the good stuff around the barn that Little Redge could use some assistance, turned toward a patch of grass in a sunbeam and replied, Baaa humbug! It's time for my beauty nap not I!
- 11:10Jonathan: Wow I love the embellishments to your narration, Redge.
- 11:15Jonathan: But I've never heard of a sheep taking beauty naps.
- 11:20Jonathan: Just regular old naps.
- 11:24Redge: Then you must not know many sheep.
- 11:28Jonathan: Good point.
- 11:29Jonathan: Well do you know the final piece?
- 11:33Jonathan: What did Little Redge Hen do in the situation when no friends would help?
- 11:39Redge: Well I assume that Redge Hen made the bread solo?
- 11:47Jonathan: Yes, the little Redge Hen knew exactly what to do.
- 11:52Jonathan: Using a little beak and a little stubborn ingenuity to bake loaves of bread, enough to feed their own family for days.
- 12:06Redge: I must interrupt.
- 12:08Redge: I'm feeling a pang of guilt again.
- 12:11Redge: If you'll wait just ten minutes, I'll rush home to grab the potatoes, and in the meantime, we can share my slice of pie from your fridge.
- 12:21Jonathan: Aw, that's really sweet of you to think of me, Redge.
- 12:24Redge: What can I say?
- 12:26Redge: We're mates.
- 12:28Jonathan: We are, and you know what?
- 12:31Jonathan: I bet if you hop on my shoulder, I can take us to your home faster than your little legs, and we could fill my pockets with potatoes.
- 12:40Jonathan: What do you think?
- 12:42Redge: Wow, we are not just mates, we're teammates!
- 12:47Jonathan: Potato leek soup will always taste better with a dash of teamwork.
- 12:52Redge: Righto! Now for the resolution to the story.
- 12:57Jonathan: Little Redge Hen wheeled steaming loaves of bread across the barnyard, and past, you guessed it, the cow, the ostrich, and the sheep.
- 13:08Redge: Ooh those selfish ones.
- 13:11Jonathan: They really let Little Redge Hen down.
- 13:14Jonathan: And our hen friend knew there was no relying on these animals in the future.
- 13:20Redge: Wise
- 13:22Jonathan: Remarkably so
- 13:25Redge: What happened to the little hen?
- 13:27Jonathan: Well, they ate all of the yummy bread themselves with their family.
- 13:32Jonathan: Just feet away the unconcerned cow, obstinate ostrich, and stubborn sheep could smell the fresh loaves, which filled them with quite a bit of regret.
- 13:47Redge: Serves them right.
- 13:49Jonathan: It would have been easy enough to lend a hoof, or talon, that's for sure.
- 13:55Jonathan: Even just a word of advice for their baking buddy.
- 13:59Redge: Jonathan.
- 14:00Redge: Uh you going to eat this soup in front of me to prove the story's point?
- 14:07Jonathan: No.
- 14:07Jonathan: I think homemade soup tastes better when it's shared.
- 14:12Redge: I see that now and agree.
- 14:14Redge: I'm going to do my best to be more generous too.
- 14:19Jonathan: I will too, Mr.
- 14:20Jonathan: Redge.
- 14:20Jonathan: Matter of fact, would you like to finish the story?
- 14:25Redge: What?
- 14:26Redge: You you mean I get to say the end?
- 14:32Jonathan: That's right.
- 14:38Redge: The end Ooh, that felt good.
- 14:41Redge: Why don't I end stories more often?
- 14:45Jonathan: Because I haven't been sharing the storyteller role as much as I should.
- 14:50Redge: Well, I'll let it slide just this once and forget to help you out again?
- 14:57Redge: Not I!
- 15:01Jonathan: That's a good one.
- 15:02Jonathan: You are a hysterically happy hedgehog.
- 15:06Redge: Ooh, a huggably handsome, heroic hedgehog.
- 15:11Jonathan: And humble too.
- 15:13Redge: Right then, let me climb on your shoulder and we'll head out on our potato quest.
- 15:20Jonathan: Here you go, buddy.
- 15:23Redge: Onwards to the Palace of Potatoes,
- 15:26Jonathan: to the stronghold of spuds,
- 15:29Redge: the Tower of Taters.
- 15:31Jonathan: And then we'll work together to make the most delicious soup in the entire kingdom.
- 15:38Redge: Huzzah!
- 15:45Jonathan: This has been a Jon Character production.
