- 0:22Thanks for listening. Good morning.
- 0:30This morning's scripture reading comes from Genesis chapter 3
- 0:34verses one through 19. Now the serpent was more crafty
- 0:39than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.
- 0:43He said to the woman, did God really say you must not eat from
- 0:47any tree in the garden? The woman said to the serpent,
- 0:51We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say,
- 0:54you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of
- 0:58the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.
- 1:02You will not certainly die, The serpent said to the woman, For
- 1:06God knows that when you eat from it, your eyes will be opened,
- 1:09and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
- 1:13When the woman saw the fruit of the tree was good for food and
- 1:16pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom,
- 1:20she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her
- 1:23husband who was with her, and he ate it.
- 1:27Then the eyes of of both of them were opened and they realized
- 1:32they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves
- 1:34together and made coverings for themselves.
- 1:37Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he
- 1:41was walking in the garden in the in the cool of the day.
- 1:44And they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
- 1:48But the Lord God called to the man, Where are you?
- 1:51He answered. I heard you in the garden and I
- 1:54was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.
- 1:58And he said, Who told you that you were naked?
- 2:00Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat
- 2:03from? The man said the woman, You put
- 2:06me here, put here with me. She gave me some fruit from the
- 2:09tree and I ate it. Then the Lord God said to the
- 2:12woman, what is this you've done? So the woman said, the serpent
- 2:16deceived me and I ate. So the Lord God said to the
- 2:19serpent, because you have done this cursed are you above all
- 2:24livestock and all wild animals, You will crawl on your belly and
- 2:28you will eat dust all the days of your life, and I will put
- 2:32enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and
- 2:36hers. He will crush your heel and you
- 2:39will, I'm sorry, He will crush your head and you will strike
- 2:42his heel to the woman. He said, I will make your pains
- 2:46in childbearing very severe with painful labor.
- 2:49You will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your
- 2:52husband, and he will rule over you.
- 2:55To Adam, he said, because you listened to your wife and ate
- 2:59from the fruit of the tree which I commanded you, you must not
- 3:02eat from it. Cursed is the ground because of
- 3:06you, through painful toil you. You will eat food from it all
- 3:10the days of your life. It will produce thorns and
- 3:13thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field by
- 3:16the sweat of your brow. You will eat your food until you
- 3:19return to the ground, since from it you were taken.
- 3:23For dust you are, and to dust you will return.
- 3:27This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 3:30Thanks be to God. Amen.
- 3:36I think one of the biggest questions that people ask and
- 3:41have been asking probably for as long as there have been people,
- 3:46is what does the future hold for me, right?
- 3:52We want to know what is going to happen in our lives and in the
- 3:57lives of our family and, and those we love and, and even in
- 4:01the world in which we live, right?
- 4:03Things seem uncertain to us. These are normal questions that
- 4:09we ask because it's normal to wonder about the unknown.
- 4:13I think those big questions that we ask about the future speak to
- 4:18some of our biggest fears, right?
- 4:23Some of our biggest fears, which are not being able to control
- 4:27what happens, and two that will make the wrong choices and ruin
- 4:33our futures. Or maybe that at the end of the
- 4:36day, our lives won't actually have mattered for much of
- 4:41anything. But what if I told you?
- 4:45What if I told you that you could live with a relationship
- 4:50of conversational intimacy with the One who knows the future,
- 4:57the one who's guiding all things toward his ultimate purposes?
- 5:02What if I told you that is the kind of relationship that you
- 5:06were created to have with the God of the universe?
- 5:11Now, I'm not talking about God being some kind of cosmic
- 5:15crystal ball or or treating the Bible like a magic 8 ball that
- 5:21you ask a question. You remember those magic 8
- 5:22balls. You ask a question and you shake
- 5:25it up and then flip it over and it would either say yes, no,
- 5:29maybe not likely those kind of things.
- 5:32And when you didn't like the answer, you'd shake it again and
- 5:34flip it over and hopefully get a different answer.
- 5:39That's not what I'm talking about this morning, right?
- 5:43What I'm talking about is a real relationship with a real person
- 5:48who we can know and be known by. Now notice I I didn't say a
- 5:54human being, but a person, right?
- 5:58Because God, the God who made us, is a personal being who's
- 6:03been described by Orthodox Christians forever as a Trinity,
- 6:10right? Three persons in one being,
- 6:13Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And so part of being made in
- 6:18God's image is that we are made for relationship.
- 6:23We're made to know other persons and to be known by them.
- 6:29We see that, I think, from the very opening verses of the story
- 6:33that God is telling. And in particular we see it in
- 6:36the passage that will read for us this morning from Genesis
- 6:40chapter 3. And here in Genesis 3, we're
- 6:44told the story of how in the midst of the good world that God
- 6:49had created and in the midst of the good garden where God had
- 6:53placed the very good man and woman, the serpent came and
- 7:00deceived those first humans. They disobeyed the one command
- 7:06that God had given them and sin entered the world and and and
- 7:11separated humanity from the God who made them.
- 7:16This morning. We don't, we don't have time to
- 7:18go through all 19 verses of that passage, but I want to focus in
- 7:22on verses 89 and 10 because I, I think these 3 short verses teach
- 7:29us three key truths, at least three key truths.
- 7:33We're, we're going to focus on three this morning.
- 7:36So I want to walk through these 3 verses together and remember
- 7:40these 3 verses we're talking about verses 89 and 10 of
- 7:44chapter 3. This is after the man and the
- 7:48woman disobeyed God, right? It's after sin came into the
- 7:53world and into the human experience and into the equation
- 7:56between God and humanity. So Genesis 3, beginning with
- 8:01verse eight, let me read it for us again.
- 8:02It says then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord
- 8:07God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day
- 8:10and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
- 8:17First tells us that they heard the sound of God walking in the
- 8:22garden. This is seems to be something
- 8:24they were familiar with, right? Something they had done with God
- 8:28since the days that they themselves were created.
- 8:31Something that didn't seem out of place to the man and the
- 8:35woman there in the garden or like God was somehow coming in
- 8:39like a principal who's called in when a rule gets broken.
- 8:47They were used to it. They've done this before.
- 8:50God had shown up in the cool of the day to walk with the man and
- 8:55the woman. And part of what it means to be
- 8:57created by God is that they and we were created to walk with
- 9:05God. Just like that.
- 9:07Even though Adam and Eve had sinned, they had disobeyed.
- 9:12God still wanted to walk with them and talk with them.
- 9:18And God came looking for them because he can't tell me that
- 9:24God didn't know what had happened or that God came
- 9:29looking for them and didn't realize that anything had
- 9:32changed between them until he realized that they were hiding
- 9:36from him, right? God knew.
- 9:40God knew. He always knows.
- 9:45And even though God, new God came looking for them and
- 9:52friends, God comes looking for us even when we try to hide from
- 9:58him, because we're created to walk with him.
- 10:03That's his desire. He, he comes looking for us
- 10:06because that's why he created us or he created us to be in
- 10:09fellowship with him. That's his desire, that's his
- 10:12intention. And so he comes looking for us
- 10:18to walk with him. And in verse 9, it continues.
- 10:23That's what the Lord God called to the man.
- 10:27Where are you? This wasn't how it was other
- 10:33days. So God was not only looking for
- 10:37the man and the woman to walk with, He called out to them,
- 10:41right? God spoke in a way that they
- 10:44could hear, a way that they could recognize as the voice of
- 10:49God. And notice God doesn't come in
- 10:54with guns blazing to nail them to the wall because of what
- 10:58they'd done. He comes and he asks the
- 11:01question. He asks the question, and I
- 11:06don't think that's incidental. Have you ever noticed if you've
- 11:10read through the Gospels like we did in the fall together, have
- 11:15you ever noticed how many times the gospel record has Jesus
- 11:20asking a question? Anybody know?
- 11:24No, 307 times in the Gospels, 307 times, Jesus asks the
- 11:33question. Often it's in response to
- 11:36someone asking him a question, which if you've ever had
- 11:40children, you know is infuriating, right?
- 11:43They come in, you know, you ask them a question, they ask you a
- 11:45question back, and they never really answer the question.
- 11:48Well, apparently Jesus does that to you.
- 11:51But anyway, the the thing about asking a question is that
- 11:56questions open the door for more conversation, right?
- 12:01Think how differently this story about God and the man and the
- 12:06woman would sound if God came into the garden that day and
- 12:11said stop hiding, come on out. Or, or he just launched into
- 12:17those curses that are recorded in the second-half of chapter 3.
- 12:24But he doesn't do that. He comes asking a question and
- 12:30the story actually God asks 4 questions before he says
- 12:36anything. He was using the the questions
- 12:40to create conversation because humanity.
- 12:44We were created to hear God's voice, to be in conversation
- 12:50with Him to to not just speak to God, but to hear from him as
- 12:55well. And because God cares about our
- 13:00conversation and he invites us to play a role, to to own our
- 13:05stuff so that he can bring the work of transformation in our
- 13:10lives. But it starts with a question,
- 13:14starts with hearing God speak. And then in verse 10, we hear
- 13:21the man's response to God's first question, right.
- 13:25He answered the man, I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid
- 13:31because I was naked. So we hid the man and the woman
- 13:38had heard God walking in the garden.
- 13:41They had heard God's voice calling to them and they knew
- 13:47something wasn't right. They were afraid for the first
- 13:53time because they knew that their relationship with God was
- 13:59broken. They knew that they had been
- 14:02created to know God, not just to to walk with him, not just to
- 14:06hear his voice, but to know Him. And that relationship was broken
- 14:17as as we'll talk about hearing God over these next few weeks, I
- 14:24think this is something we have to to keep in mind.
- 14:27It frames the way we think about hearing God's voice, right?
- 14:34The primary point of communication isn't just the
- 14:37information that's exchanged between people.
- 14:40The primary point of communication is the
- 14:42relationship that's developed between those two people.
- 14:47God speaks to us not primarily so we can know the future.
- 14:53He speaks to us so we can know Him.
- 14:58All right. God doesn't just speak to us so
- 15:00we can know the future. He speaks to us so that we can
- 15:05know Him because God already knows us intimately, right?
- 15:11Luke records Jesus saying that God knows the very number of
- 15:15hairs on our heads. Psalm 139 says that God knit us
- 15:21together in our mother's wombs. He he knows our thoughts before
- 15:26we even have them. First Samuel tells us that God
- 15:30knows our hearts right? That famous passage where Samuel
- 15:36is going to anoint the new king and and Samuel's looking at the
- 15:41outward appearance and God says, no, I don't look at the outward
- 15:44appearance, I know the heart. God knows us intimately, but He
- 15:53also wants to be known by us. Jeremiah 24/7 says that God will
- 16:00give us new hearts to know Him. He says I will give them a heart
- 16:05to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people and I
- 16:10will be their God, for they will return to me with all their
- 16:15heart. There's so many other stories
- 16:20throughout the Bible that talk about God speaking to people,
- 16:23revealing Himself so that they can know Him, right?
- 16:30God calls Abraham to follow him. God gives Joseph dreams.
- 16:34He speaks to Moses from a burning Bush.
- 16:37He sends a messenger to encourage Joshua to give him a
- 16:40battle plan for going against Jericho.
- 16:43God calls Samuel's name in the night.
- 16:46He reveals himself to Elijah in the gentle whisper.
- 16:49He appears to Saul on the road to Damascus.
- 16:52He tells Philip to go walk on the Gaza road to meet the
- 16:56Ethiopian. He sends an Angel to speak to
- 16:59Cornelius so that Peter can share the good news with with
- 17:04him friends. These are just a few examples
- 17:07that I could give. And I say examples on purpose,
- 17:12right? They're not just illustrations.
- 17:14I think we often tend to think of of the characters and
- 17:19scriptures. We read their stories and we
- 17:21say, oh, wow, that's the exception.
- 17:23Those are the really extra super holy people.
- 17:26And I could never be one of them.
- 17:30Somehow these people that got written about in the Bible that
- 17:34God showed up to, they're, they're somehow quite different
- 17:37from us. It's just not true, right?
- 17:43These are normal people who were living normal lives before God
- 17:52appeared to them. James 517 tells us that Elijah
- 17:56was a man, a human being just like us, even as we are.
- 18:00He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not
- 18:04rain on the land for 3 1/2 years because God told him to pray
- 18:10that prayer. They were normal people who
- 18:17encountered the living God and said yes eventually anyway, they
- 18:25responded to what God was saying just like we can.
- 18:31And I think we need to read the Bible that way because just like
- 18:36Adam and Eve, we too have been created to to walk with God, to
- 18:42hear his voice, to know God intimately.
- 18:48Like friend. Some parts of Scripture, it's
- 18:53even described as a relationship between a lover and the beloved
- 18:56intimate relationship in his book, How to Hear God, A Simple
- 19:03guide for normal people, The kind of book I need to read.
- 19:09Pete Gregg says learning to hear God's voice, his word and his
- 19:16whisper, it's the single most important thing you will ever
- 19:20learn to do. I'm not exaggerating.
- 19:24Hearing God is not peripheral. It is integral to human history.
- 19:28Neither is it an optional extra for wild eyed Mystics and those
- 19:34who happen to be spiritually inclined.
- 19:36Hearing God is essential to the very purpose for which you and I
- 19:43were made. Without it, everything falls
- 19:48apart. Learning to hear God's voice in
- 19:56whatever way it might come to us Because it does come in
- 20:00different ways at different times, Learning to hear God's
- 20:06voice is essential if we want to fulfill the purposes for which
- 20:12God created us. And if we believe Jesus's words
- 20:21in John 10, as he's speaking about himself as the Good
- 20:25Shepherd, he says the gatekeeper opens the gate for him.
- 20:29The Good Shepherd and the sheep listen to his voice.
- 20:35He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
- 20:38When He has brought out all of His own, he goes on ahead of
- 20:41them, and his sheep follow him because they know what He looks
- 20:47like. No, because they know the path
- 20:51he's going to take. No, the sheep follow him because
- 20:58they know His voice. Friends, learning to hear God's
- 21:05voice speaking to us is integral to our ability to follow Him.
- 21:14If we don't hear His voice, if we don't recognize His voice
- 21:20among all the other voices that are trying to speak to us, if we
- 21:24don't know His voice, we can't follow Him.
- 21:33That's what Jesus said. We don't know His voice.
- 21:35We can't follow Him, or at least if we do know His voice, we will
- 21:43follow Him. So what's it mean to hear God's
- 21:49voice? Well, we're going to spend the
- 21:52whole next 5 weeks going over that, getting into that.
- 21:56We're going to look at how we hear God's voice, where we hear
- 22:00His voice, and how we recognize it to be His.
- 22:05We're going to talk about why God speaks to us and how to not
- 22:09hear God's voice. I think we're all, we can all be
- 22:13pretty good at that sometimes. And we're going to talk about
- 22:17how we respond to God's voice. I could never sum up all of that
- 22:22in this one sermon, so we're going to spread it out.
- 22:26But for today, let me just say that just as God spoke to people
- 22:34in the Bible in a variety of ways, God still speaks to us,
- 22:40and he still speaks in a variety of ways.
- 22:43It doesn't mean we always hear an audible voice speak from a
- 22:48cloud, right? Like what happened to Jesus on
- 22:51the day of his baptism. He gives dreams, He gives
- 22:56visions. He sometimes gives us a sense of
- 22:58leading about what we should do or who we should reach out to.
- 23:03Sometimes he whispers in our hearts, right?
- 23:06That's where God's Spirit lives after all, isn't it?
- 23:09In our hearts. So we wouldn't, shouldn't be
- 23:12surprised if He speaks to us there.
- 23:15His word can come to us through the word of a friend, through a
- 23:18passage of scripture, through a sermon, a song, a book, and on
- 23:23and on it goes. The key isn't trying to find out
- 23:28the one way that God speaks to us.
- 23:32The key is learning to recognize that it's God who is speaking to
- 23:36us. And not just last night's tacos.
- 23:44Now, this might be a new idea for you this morning.
- 23:48This might be outside of your experience, outside of the realm
- 23:52of what's comfortable for you. You may have thought or been
- 23:55taught at some point that the only way we hear God speaking
- 23:59today is through reading the Bible.
- 24:03And that is certainly one of the primary ways we hear God
- 24:07speaking to us. You might be hearing all this
- 24:11and, and your heresy alarm is going off full blast right now.
- 24:16Maybe you're thinking, isn't it a bit presumptuous to believe
- 24:22that God would take time to speak to me?
- 24:29To which Dallas philosopher Dallas Willard says, and I would
- 24:33agree. Isn't it more presumptuous and
- 24:37dangerous, in fact, to undertake human existence without hearing
- 24:43from God? To think that we can know
- 24:48better, that we should be able to figure it out apart from God?
- 24:55You might feel uncomfortable with the idea of God speaking to
- 25:00individuals. Or maybe you're sitting here
- 25:02wondering, have I ever heard God's voice?
- 25:08Maybe you just don't think that God speaks to people, let alone
- 25:11Someone Like You. I want to challenge you.
- 25:17I want to invite you to approach these next few weeks of sermons
- 25:24with an openness to hear the stories of Scripture as examples
- 25:30for us to follow, rather than the exceptional, extraordinary
- 25:35methods that God uses when He has no other options.
- 25:41And I want to invite you to ask God to speak to you this week.
- 25:47I want to encourage you to create some space in your life
- 25:52over these next 5 weeks to hear God speaking.
- 25:58That might mean you need to turn off the TV or the radio or the
- 26:04podcast or the audio book to experience some silence in the
- 26:10midst of our noisy world in which God could then speak to
- 26:14you. Might mean you need to pull out
- 26:18your Bible, blow off the dust, crack it open, right and and
- 26:28read and, and get familiar with what God's voice sounds like,
- 26:35right? Because in Scripture, that's
- 26:37where we learn to hear what God sounds like.
- 26:40You don't know where to start reading.
- 26:42Pick one of the gospels. See this Jesus, who is the
- 26:47clearest representation of God, the clearest self revelation of
- 26:51God that humanity has ever had, and it's recorded here in
- 26:56Scripture. Get to know God's voice again.
- 27:01Open up. Well, it might mean you need to
- 27:04pause and take some time before making that next decision to
- 27:13give him some space again to speak.
- 27:20Just the other day, I was faced with a choice between going to
- 27:28my physical therapy appointment and attending an important
- 27:33meeting that I could sit in and observe but I couldn't actually
- 27:38have any impact on. But there was a part of me that
- 27:44really wanted to know what was going to be said in that
- 27:48meeting, to hear it first hand, to know what was going on so I
- 27:52could be able to, to, to have all the information right.
- 27:56That's, that's a big thing for me, having the information,
- 27:59knowing things, how I try to control what happens.
- 28:03So when I found out that this meeting had gotten changed in
- 28:09its time and it conflicted with my PT appointment, immediately,
- 28:14I called the the physical therapy office and said, hey, do
- 28:18you have any other appointments? They said we have one other
- 28:21appointment, 7:30 in the morning, you can have it.
- 28:26I said, OK, I'll take it. My friends, I hate getting up in
- 28:29the morning, let alone getting out of the house on Friday,
- 28:33which is the one day I don't come over to the church.
- 28:35I don't come into the office. I try to take it as Sabbath,
- 28:397:30 in the morning. I said, OK, set my alarm.
- 28:42I go to sleep. My alarm never goes off.
- 28:46I wake up at 7:45 to a voicemail that says, hey, we just wanted
- 28:51to check in on you because you're never late.
- 28:53Is everything OK? I said, yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm
- 29:00fine. I just, my alarm didn't go off.
- 29:03I, I didn't wake up. I guess you can go ahead and,
- 29:06and charge me my no show fee. And they said, well, would you
- 29:10want to come in later? Do you have time?
- 29:12Could you come in? We have a 10:30 appointment.
- 29:15I said, I, I know that was my appointment as of yesterday.
- 29:20Well, they said, what would you want to come in then?
- 29:27The meeting, the appointment, I didn't want to go to PTI, didn't
- 29:39want to miss that meeting. But in that split second of
- 29:46making the decision, in that little bit of a time it took me
- 29:50to take a breath, God said, will you surrender this meeting?
- 30:00I said, OK, I'll take the PT appointment.
- 30:03And I went to that. I didn't get on the meeting.
- 30:07I didn't hear what was going on, what was said or anything like
- 30:11that. And the rest of the morning I
- 30:14struggled through I, I, I had to work through that decision I had
- 30:18made to say yes to God's invitation, even though I still
- 30:25wanted to be in that meeting. I had to, to surrender.
- 30:28I had to submit that to God. But it showed me again that that
- 30:35God cares about our transformation, right?
- 30:41He, he, he said to me over that morning, Scott, how much do you
- 30:45think it matters if you're there in that meeting?
- 30:48I said, well, I guess not a whole lot.
- 30:54He said, who, Who does it matter to be there?
- 30:59I said, God, you need to be there and if you're there, then
- 31:02I can trust you with the rest of it.
- 31:09Friends, we've been created to walk with God.
- 31:14We've been created to hear His voice because we've been created
- 31:19to know God intimately, not just know about Him, but to really
- 31:29know Him. And as we do, He wants to deal
- 31:36with those fears and those anxieties, those hopes and
- 31:41dreams, those attempts to control the world around us.
- 31:51Because He cares about our transformation.
- 31:54He cares about shaping us into the kind of people who can walk
- 31:57with him, people he can entrust with his presence and his
- 32:02authority. People he can send out into the
- 32:05world to carry his presence to people who need to know him.
- 32:20He wants to. He is speaking to us, and He
- 32:24wants us to learn to hear Him. And by revealing Himself not
- 32:30just as our Creator who made us and left us to run life on our
- 32:34own, but as our Good Shepherd who wants to lead us and guide
- 32:42us and shape us and mold us, who knows us and wants to be known
- 32:50by us. He's speaking.
- 32:57I think the bigger question is, are we willing to listen?
- 33:03Would you pray with me? God, we are grateful that you
- 33:11made us and that you love us. You care about us enough that
- 33:18you want us to walk with you and hear your voice and know you to
- 33:28relate to you, not just as as some God to be appeased, but as
- 33:33a friend to be known, a shepherd who wants to lead us and guide
- 33:39us and show us the way we should walk.
- 33:47So, God, this morning and over these next weeks, would you help
- 33:53us create some space? Would you help us know some of
- 34:01the things we meet, maybe need to say no to so that we can
- 34:07create some time, some silence, some solitude so we can hear
- 34:13your voice? And would you help us to
- 34:16recognize? Would you help us to recognize
- 34:20your voice as you're speaking to us, as you're showing us more of
- 34:24who you want us to be and who you are and, and your thoughts
- 34:28and plans for the world? God, would you help us to
- 34:34listen? Would you help us to respond?
- 34:36And in faith and in trust and surrender, God, we give you
- 34:46ourselves. We believe you're speaking, and
- 34:53we want to be people who listen. So would you speak, Lord, for
- 34:58your servants or listening? Jesus, we pray this in your
- 35:06name, Amen.
