- 1:12The. And welcome back to the Boundary
- 1:49Corner podcast along with my partners, Brian Ziegler and
- 1:52Shelton Moss in a late arriving Jonathan Talley.
- 1:55He will be here in just a little while.
- 1:57Y'all. My name is Curtis Wilson.
- 1:59Boundary Corner podcast is part of the College Huddle Network
- 2:02and this episode, as always, is brought to you by Doctor Jeremy
- 2:05Counts down at Counts Family Pharmacy Three O 1 S Main St.,
- 2:09Blacksburg. Your friendly neighborhood
- 2:10pharmacy. Season's over.
- 2:15All the regular season's over. The regular season's over.
- 2:18It went by fast, did it not? Such is life, man.
- 2:23I mean, we started the season, Sheldon didn't have a job.
- 2:26Now he's got a job. He's got a new apartment.
- 2:30He's writing articles for the key play Sheldon.
- 2:35He will feverishly be finishing out an article after we wrap up
- 2:38tonight for y'all tomorrow, Sheldon, just get a little tea
- 2:43on what you're going to be reviewing there for that article
- 2:46when it drops. Yeah, so I think it might be a
- 2:50two-part series, you know, Part 1 tomorrow, but because I got a
- 2:54lot of things to write about. But I would say, you know, I I
- 2:56just talked about how how much of an underachiever Virginia
- 2:59Tech was historical underachiever.
- 3:01If you saw my tweet the other day, Okies are last 20-3 years.
- 3:07They had the highest point differential against FBS plus
- 3:096.9 point differential for a team that did not finish with a
- 3:13winning record at 6:00 and 6:00. So I think the the defining
- 3:18aspect of this team will just be, you know, underachieving.
- 3:21I mean, they they should have won more than six games, but
- 3:23they didn't found a way to lose every close game O and five.
- 3:27And I think I think the play on the field was a lot better than
- 3:31what the record indicated, even though we certainly do have some
- 3:33criticism of coaching. But you know, I I talked about
- 3:36the defense and how, you know, they did statistically improving
- 3:39a lot of metrics from last year, but it was also somewhat of a
- 3:42mirage just because they faced a lot of backup quarterbacks.
- 3:44They didn't really win a game against any decent quarterback
- 3:48the entire season. You know, they gave us some big
- 3:51passing plays, a lot of explosives and they they
- 3:54struggled to stop the run consistently.
- 3:56So you think we look at those factors together, you kind of
- 3:58look at a defense that just really didn't.
- 4:01I think the the, the sum of the parts, you know, wasn't bigger
- 4:06than the whole, whatever the quote is.
- 4:08I don't know. But they just they didn't
- 4:09perform well enough. So there you go.
- 4:12All right, so definitely check that out tomorrow with Shelton.
- 4:15And you know, normally we will start with Tell the Truth
- 4:19Tuesday and review the game. But because we were waiting for
- 4:21Tally had to attend the basketball game and I can be
- 4:24sliding in here a little later, we're going to start it to be at
- 4:27the ending end at the beginning. So what we're starting with is
- 4:31we are going to start with our big screeners this week.
- 4:33We have decided to pick every conference championship game,
- 4:37all nine of them straight up money line, no spread involved.
- 4:42Who you think's going to take home the trophy potential bids
- 4:45into the CFP playoff? We can.
- 4:49We're going to actually discuss that and the rankings once we
- 4:52get this wrapped up. So a lot of fun, a lot of games.
- 4:55If you're a gambler like Jason Long, our buddy, I have a
- 4:59feeling either Jason come Sunday is going to have a lot of money
- 5:01to the bet on the NFL. He's not going to be able to bet
- 5:04on the NFL Sunday after Friday and Saturday, so.
- 5:09This is a fun one because I, I looked, it's kind of where we
- 5:12fell and it's a, it's a very interesting, interesting week.
- 5:16Yeah, after after a a few weeks here of having quite a few games
- 5:22where we're all in lockstep, we got a bunch this week that
- 5:27there's at least a couple stragglers here and there.
- 5:29There are some stragglers here and there.
- 5:32So let's get that graphic up and let's get it started.
- 5:37And we are going to start with one of the first games on Friday
- 5:40night where Jonathan Talley's alma mater, the Jacksonville
- 5:44State Gamecocks. But one Gamecock is going to
- 5:47have a championship this year. The other probably not going to
- 5:50be able to play takes on Western Kentucky.
- 5:52Western Kentucky is sneaking into this game after they beat
- 5:57Jacksonville State last week to get into the Conference USA
- 6:04title game, which is pretty crazy.
- 6:05I think it's a 3 point win. 16/19/16 I'll get that up to
- 6:09confirm. So we're going to start here.
- 6:12It's going to be Friday night. 7:00.
- 6:15Get your get your gambling ready because you know that's what
- 6:20you're going to do on this game. Going to be on CBS Sports
- 6:23Network, we're picking straight up the line is Jacksonville -3
- 6:271/2 and it is going to be at Jacksonville State.
- 6:31So at their home stadium where the match up I believe last week
- 6:35if I'm not mistaken was at Western Kentucky and it was 17
- 6:39or 1917 Western Kentucky with a walk off 50 yard field goal to
- 6:44beat Jacksonville State. So Brian, with all that being
- 6:47said. Teams this evenly matched.
- 6:50Winning a game twice is hard as hell.
- 6:54So for that reason, we're going with the cops, man.
- 6:58Got winning against the same team twice usually it's tough to
- 7:03do anyway. Winning against the same team
- 7:06twice in back-to-back weeks, I don't find that data point.
- 7:10Is that ever been done? I can find it be.
- 7:14So we'll let you look that up while we're going through this
- 7:16stuff. But for me, I'm also with Brian,
- 7:20I I think a close win. Wilshire, Kentucky's home field
- 7:24definitely saved one last week. Jacksonville Statewood home
- 7:26field Jacksonville State wins Conference USA.
- 7:31Yeah, I know Boise State and President State had a couple
- 7:33years where they they faced off back-to-back in the Mountain
- 7:35West because of the the championship game after regular
- 7:37season game. And those are some pretty good
- 7:39battles. I think.
- 7:39I think they split most of their meetings.
- 7:40But yeah, I'm taking, I'm taking Jacksonville State.
- 7:43I honestly don't really know anything about either one of
- 7:44these teams, but I'm just taking the home team.
- 7:47There you go. You know where Tally's.
- 7:49Going well, you know where he's going.
- 7:51And Miranda's going with Western Kentucky here.
- 7:55She thinks they can pull the double and.
- 7:58Jason's riding with the rest of the crew.
- 8:00All righty, Brian, where are we going next?
- 8:05Miami of Ohio and Ohio all. Righty the matching.
- 8:11The matching, this is totally gut feel for me.
- 8:18I'm going with Ohio. I'm riding.
- 8:20I'm riding with the Bobcats here.
- 8:25Gut feel for me. This is going to be noon by the
- 8:29way, on Saturday, ESP NS carrying this one game is let's
- 8:34say I think it's at Ford Field, the wonderful Ford Field, which
- 8:38is wonderful. Now it's a fun place to watch
- 8:40football. Now these teams matched up in
- 8:43the regular season with Miami of Ohio beating Ohio and it's kind
- 8:52of funny though when y'all think about it.
- 8:55So we have a Miami and an Ohio in conference championship
- 8:58weekend, but you know what? Is it either one we thought it'd
- 9:04be? Nope, not at all.
- 9:06Nope. I like Miami a little bit more
- 9:10and I'll tell you why on this one.
- 9:13Yes, they're going to pull the double, but that game was way
- 9:15back. When you take a look at their
- 9:17records this year, Miami's of Ohio's other three losses.
- 9:23They lost to Northwestern, they lost to Cincinnati and they lost
- 9:26to Notre Dame, and they were competitive in those games.
- 9:31So I'm going to want to go Miami of Ohio on this one.
- 9:37All right, Sheldon, what you got?
- 9:38Yeah, I'm taking Miami. Last three games they've given
- 9:41up a total of 28 points. Their defense is on fire.
- 9:44I'm taking the team with better defense today.
- 9:46So Miami. All right.
- 9:49Tally's riding with Y'all, Miranda's on my train here and
- 9:54Jason is with Y'all as well, so it's kind of a split house here.
- 10:01Little 42 action. Little 42 action there.
- 10:05All right. Oh baby, next one, Sunbelt
- 10:11Conference where this legitimately looks like a really
- 10:16good game. Marshalls nine and three,
- 10:20usually Louisiana Raisin Cajuns are tending to this game at
- 10:27Cajun Field, so it is a home field advantage for the Raisin
- 10:30Cajuns. Will be on ESPN on Saturday.
- 10:34Excuse me, yes, Saturday night 730 have a man cave set up.
- 10:41You don't miss any games, but everybody know that out there
- 10:46and and it's interesting. I'm trying to pull it up here.
- 10:49I don't think they played in the regular season because there's
- 10:51an East and West for this. Marshall coming off a win over
- 10:56JMU. They did not play in the regular
- 10:59season. So a first, first meeting of the
- 11:03season. Yeah, first match up and it's a
- 11:04good match up. They're both good, solid teams.
- 11:08Brian, what are you thinking on this one?
- 11:11You know, I've liked what I've seen from the Marshall games
- 11:14that I've watched all year. I haven't watched a ton of
- 11:16Louisiana throughout the year. Marshalls looked pretty
- 11:23impressive compared to what I thought we were going to get
- 11:25from them this year, so I'm going to take Marshall in this
- 11:28one. Yeah, Marshall, two of their
- 11:31three losses, obviously they lost to Tech and then they lost
- 11:35to Ohio State the following week.
- 11:38So two of their three losses are to Power Four teams, Raging
- 11:43Cajuns one and one against. Effectively not one in one.
- 11:46But Raging Cage's biggest win this year.
- 11:49Beat Tulane early in the season. Should be lost to Tulane early
- 11:53in the season, but beat Wake Forest.
- 11:55So with all that being said, I don't know, I like Charles Huff.
- 11:59I think this is more I like Charles Huff.
- 12:02He might be the coach in a couple years.
- 12:04So get on with bandwagon now. Well, I like Michael Desermo.
- 12:09That's the head coach for Louisiana.
- 12:11OK, he was, he was a little bit similar to pride in the sense
- 12:14that he got really unlucky his first two years.
- 12:17But this has been sort of the big turn around year for
- 12:18Louisiana. He's done a great job.
- 12:20They're they're tending to overall 7/1 of the conference.
- 12:22So I'm taking Louisiana. I think I just think they got a
- 12:25really good unit. Yeah.
- 12:27All right. Yeah.
- 12:29Tally's riding with you there, Sheldon, Miranda's riding me and
- 12:33Curtis and Jason they we got a full split here on this one.
- 12:36Hey Sheldon, just just a little background.
- 12:38Where did the Ormo come from? Where was he he?
- 12:42He's a, he was a first time head coach.
- 12:44He can't, he was an assistant there for a bunch of years and
- 12:47he actually came before that straight from straight from high
- 12:48school. So he was a running backs coach
- 12:50for one year and then switched over to tight ends for five
- 12:53years and then just moved up the ranks.
- 12:55Wow, that's that's, that's actually pretty impressive to do
- 12:59something like that. You don't see a lot of guys
- 13:01literally go from high school a straight into AG 5.
- 13:05That's that's one of the more impressive things, unless you're
- 13:07at one of the big time, you know, high schools within a
- 13:10state or something, which could be the case down in Louisiana
- 13:13where he was. I'd have to go do that research,
- 13:15but but good for him, good for him with ten wins.
- 13:19So yeah, all righty now we're getting into some of the bigger
- 13:23games, and this one is just this one's a juicy matchup.
- 13:30So first of all, Brian, I'm going to need you to play
- 13:33weatherman. Give me the weather for what's
- 13:38the exact name of the town where Army's located?
- 13:43I know it's on the east the the river and everything.
- 13:49Mitchy Stadium. Look up Mitchy Stadium.
- 13:51So this game Friday night it's 8:00 it's on ABC 2G5 teams like
- 14:00who are very good obviously Tech any if you're if you're a tech
- 14:04fan, you remember playing this two lane team in the bowl
- 14:06without players. A lot of players left last year
- 14:10Army what a great fucking season.
- 14:12Just straight up 10 and one the game the army Navy game is going
- 14:16to be incredible this year. They're both really good.
- 14:19They both run their offenses efficiently.
- 14:21I look forward to that game in a couple weeks, but this is a big
- 14:24one for the AACI don't think either one of the I don't think
- 14:28Army can backdoor its way into the playoffs with the win here
- 14:32based on where like UNL VS ranked.
- 14:35But Friday night, 8:00, it's cold right now on the East
- 14:39Coast. Brian, let's get a little
- 14:41weather report. What's going to be the
- 14:43temperature at kick off on Friday night for this game?
- 14:46Let's see. I'm getting there here.
- 15:03Let's see. Looks like it's going to be 25.
- 15:07So 25° from a team that plays, I'm not mistaken, Tulane still
- 15:11plays in the Superdome. Yep, definitely against the
- 15:16elements in that one. Tulane also coming off a hard
- 15:19loss to Memphis, which my for some reason my oldest son, I
- 15:23guess he watched that game or saw the score.
- 15:24He's like, yeah, Memphis won dad.
- 15:26Big win for Ryan Silverfield, Brian as well.
- 15:29It. Was yeah, it looks like it's
- 15:30going to be between 25 and 27 depending on what, where you,
- 15:33where you look at kickoff so. Cold, cold.
- 15:38All right. Well, with all that being said,
- 15:40Brian, who you got? Despite all of that, I I'm
- 15:44rolling with Tulane here. I think they just have a little
- 15:47bit more they're a little bit more dynamic both on offense and
- 15:52defense. So I I think that's going to be
- 15:54the difference in the game. I think they squeak one out, but
- 15:57army makes it very, very close. All righty.
- 16:02I think Army's going to win this game.
- 16:04I think Tulane, because if Tulane had won that game last
- 16:07week, maybe a shot potentially at a a bid.
- 16:13If they had held on and beaten Memphis, I think Army, big
- 16:17bounce back for them. Army wins.
- 16:22Yeah, I love army, but I got to take I got to take two lane.
- 16:26I just think they got more firepower and I think the Black
- 16:29Knights have been kind of a little bit going on some some
- 16:32good luck here. So I think Tulane will win.
- 16:39Yeah, Tally's ride with Army, Miranda's ride with Army and
- 16:43Jason is ride with Army. So shelved me and you were out
- 16:46there on our own on this one. Curtis, you are on mute.
- 16:55Listen, Throne team, 25° weather in the 15 mile an hour, winds
- 17:00falling off, but if they would, I'd speak to them.
- 17:05All righty. Finally, we get to the big ones
- 17:09because the next five games effectively are going to be
- 17:12automatic bids into the into the playoffs.
- 17:19Brian, you want to you want to talk about this one a little
- 17:22bit? Yeah, I mean, we got UNLV, we
- 17:25got Boise. Yeah.
- 17:27This is a really, really interesting match up.
- 17:31Like a little bit of contrasting styles there.
- 17:35I'm liking what I've seen from Boise.
- 17:37I think Boise holes Pat in their their March into the College
- 17:42Football Playoff and in my opinion, getting one of those
- 17:46automatic buys as well. So give me Boise State and we'll
- 17:52talk about that later. But yeah, we.
- 17:54Will teaser teaser. All righty, y'all know these
- 18:00teams played one time already and it was in Vegas, It was at
- 18:04Allegiant, it was a little bit warmer.
- 18:08Did y'all know that was Ashan Gente's worst game of the
- 18:13season? He averaged under 4 yards to
- 18:15carry UNL VS rush defense, ranked 10th in the nation, only
- 18:20given up 101 yards a game. That was a 2 point game the
- 18:24first time. It is at Boise.
- 18:27I'm sure it's going to be cold as hell there.
- 18:30I'm actually interested to see that.
- 18:32It's not going to change my pick, but you know, Friday
- 18:38night, yeah, you know, it's going to be about 40 at kickoff,
- 18:42so not terrible. I think UNLV shakes up
- 18:46everything because right now they're only two losses are to
- 18:50Boise in the overtime game against Syracuse very early in
- 18:53the season. Syracuse, obviously nine and
- 18:55three, had a great season. I think UNLV pulls the massive
- 18:59upset and shakes up potentially the CFP.
- 19:03All right. Yeah, I'm a I'm a big Boise guy,
- 19:06so I'm biased here, but I'm going Boise.
- 19:08I do think to Curtis's point, you and Eveleigh is the one team
- 19:11in the country that can limit Ash and Genti.
- 19:13So I do think this will be a very close game, but I'll take
- 19:15Boise straight up. Tally's riding with us, Sheldon,
- 19:21as is Miranda and Jason. So, Curtis, you're out there on
- 19:25an island, babe. Got got got to roll the dice
- 19:28occasionally at the end here all righty plus I don't know where
- 19:32we stand picks wise. I think I'm under 500.
- 19:34So you got to go opposite and try to get ahead of y'all.
- 19:36All righty, let's get into the Power 4 where on Saturday at
- 19:43noon down at ATT Stadium in Arlington, TX, the house that
- 19:47Jerry built it is 10 and two Iowa State at 10 and two or
- 19:52against 10 and 2 Arizona State. I I think, I don't think
- 19:58anyone's shocked by Iowa State being a good team this year.
- 20:01Matt Campbell's had numerous good teams since he has been at
- 20:05Iowa State for the last few years.
- 20:08But big shout out Kenny Dillingham.
- 20:11I think this is the biggest surprise of maybe the second
- 20:16biggest surprise. Maybe not maybe the biggest
- 20:18surprise of all the P4 teams in the championship game in my
- 20:21opinion, but what a season for them.
- 20:26And Brian, anything add on top of that anything you like,
- 20:29Sheldon, anything you like about these teams?
- 20:31You know, it's just an interesting match up.
- 20:32And I mean, we talked about how the Big 12 shook out and there
- 20:36was kind of really, you know, 5 or 6 teams there at the end that
- 20:39could have, you know, made a run here at the the conference
- 20:43championship game. Colorado probably
- 20:46notwithstanding, these are probably the the two best all
- 20:49year, you know, top to bottom. So you know, seeing them in
- 20:54here, I think it's a it probably the best outcome that you could
- 20:57have hoped for. And.
- 20:59For this one, I'm going with the the the team that has shocked
- 21:05everybody all year. I'm I'm going with with Arizona
- 21:07State. All righty.
- 21:11I'm up next on this one again. I've already mentioned it.
- 21:13I think it's already there. My love for Matt Campbell, Hell
- 21:17of a coach. One of those guys two years ago,
- 21:20could we could we go get Matt Campbell and bring him to Vt?
- 21:23He'd be a good culture fit here. He had not been able to get over
- 21:27the Big 12 hump the last few times they played in the
- 21:30championship game. I think he cements this, let his
- 21:33legacy and gets to the playoff with Iowa State. close game,
- 21:38war. These teams, if you look at
- 21:40where they're rated, similar defenses, similar offenses
- 21:44ratings wise, but I think Iowa State takes this one in.
- 21:50Matt Campbell Ginson, it's his legacy, is probably one of the
- 21:52better coaches in this era at a school that hadn't won a hell of
- 21:56a lot before he got there. Yeah, I'm taking Arizona State.
- 22:03You know, two programs here that really just are are solid but
- 22:06not flashy. I think I was really impressed
- 22:08with Arizona State's winner. BYU kind of handled a very
- 22:11physical BYU team and I think they can handle physical Iowa
- 22:14State team as well. So and they got Ken Scudaboo,
- 22:16who's awesome. Yes, Scataboo is pretty awesome.
- 22:19I'll I'll give you that shelf. Yep, and Curtis, once again, you
- 22:26were out on an island. It's because Tally, Miranda and
- 22:29Jason are riding with Arizona State as well.
- 22:32It's the white running back effect.
- 22:33If there's a good white running back, people gravitate towards
- 22:35that. I'm just being real.
- 22:39Come on. Hey, hey.
- 22:41Peyton Hillis once made the cover of Matt.
- 22:45Yeah. He did.
- 22:48Wow he had like 1100 yards. You wouldn't even like the 5th
- 22:51best running back that year. He was white.
- 22:52At at some point that was more meme than it was anything real.
- 22:56But you know what? Sometimes you ride a meme.
- 23:00Sometimes you're out of meme. All right, Ron, I'll let you
- 23:02leave. This one is.
- 23:05It arguably the best team all year in in college football.
- 23:09Oregon, you got Penn State. Penn State's really had a year
- 23:15that I think was probably as good or better than they
- 23:19expected. I don't know if they necessarily
- 23:21saw themselves in this position with the schedule that they had,
- 23:27but they put themselves here and you know, Oregon's more or less
- 23:31handled their business all year. So one of those classic, you
- 23:40wouldn't really say this is a classic matchup from a a big 10
- 23:44standpoint. You got Oregon in there.
- 23:45But I think this is this is a a batch up that you expect when
- 23:49you talk about, you know, top five teams meeting in the big 10
- 23:54for a chance to have that, you know, in this case a bye for the
- 23:58the first round of the playoff here, probably probably A at
- 24:01least a number one and #2 seed. So I like Oregon in this one.
- 24:06They've been the best team all year.
- 24:07I think they keep that up. Yeah, Brian, you, you said a
- 24:11lot. Oregon's been the best team all
- 24:13year, probably Penn State. I mean say what you will.
- 24:17Probably their best season since they won the Big 10 a few years
- 24:21ago because the Ohio State game, they did not basic.
- 24:26They basically hung in there the whole game.
- 24:27They just could not get enough to finish it.
- 24:30Obviously. I like what Jim said.
- 24:33That is a Rose Bowl match up, but I favor Oregon in this one
- 24:38for one big reason. It's going to be inside.
- 24:41I think if this was in the elements, if this was let's
- 24:45think they moved it to Ohio and put it in Cleveland or put in
- 24:49Cincinnati. This championship game, I favor
- 24:51Penn State. But I think being on that
- 24:54wonderful Dome that Lucas Oil is that Ryan's so familiar with
- 24:58Give me Oregon and they solidify the number one and they solidify
- 25:03going to the Rose Bowl. Yes, I am taking Oregon.
- 25:10I just don't trust Franklin enough in these types of games.
- 25:14And to Brian's point, Oregon is at worst a top two team in the
- 25:17country. Penn State is not on that level.
- 25:20There we go. Tally's riding with us.
- 25:24Miranda's going Penn State, Jason also going with Penn
- 25:29State. I mean, isn't, I mean, let's be
- 25:32real before we jump to the next game.
- 25:34I mean, obviously I think everyone was expecting Ohio
- 25:37State to be in this game and for the rematch from earlier in the
- 25:40season, which was an unbelievable classic.
- 25:43The the, the question is, where was Penn State?
- 25:47Where's Penn State's head? Because I think let's be honest,
- 25:51going into the end of last week as they prepared to play, who do
- 25:54they play? Somebody help me out here.
- 26:00Y'all going to make me pull up? Efforting, efforting, efforting.
- 26:03Do it. You people like Maryland who
- 26:07fired their offensive coordinator Dane Josh Gaddis,
- 26:1144, seven. The the question is, how quick
- 26:15can they get up? Because I think in their head
- 26:17was we're going to beat Maryland, Ohio State's going to
- 26:22beat Michigan, and we're going to be somewhere between 7:00 and
- 26:279:00. Where do we land?
- 26:30Are we on the road or are we at home?
- 26:32And now with this happening, Penn State's, if whether they
- 26:35win or whether they lose or they get to buy, they're guaranteed a
- 26:38home game. I do not see them go below 8 in
- 26:40this situation. There you go all.
- 26:46Right. Thanks, Jim.
- 26:48All righty. Next we go down to Charlotte.
- 26:53Probably the game that has the biggest implications in terms of
- 26:58which got which team gets in and and which team doesn't in terms
- 27:03of at large. If you looked at the College
- 27:07Football Playoff rankings and the way they shook out today,
- 27:12very interesting to to see where a certain team from Alabama was
- 27:19located on the on these rankings.
- 27:21So this game, I think, has a lot of a lot of odds at stake for
- 27:26what happens here. Curtis, you're muted.
- 27:35Yeah, 100%, Brian, this is, you know, like you said, it's so
- 27:41much riding. Where do teams fall?
- 27:43What happens in this case, based on what the playoff committee
- 27:47did tonight with their six different ways of explaining why
- 27:50people are wearing things. There's no fucking consistency.
- 27:53They have one goal, which is they're going to try to get
- 27:56Alabama in the best they can. That's all their goal is because
- 27:59they want that giant FPGA to be there at some point for all
- 28:04viewership. So with that being said,
- 28:10anything on this with Shelton before you give your pick,
- 28:12Anything that's caught your eye about either team?
- 28:18Yeah, I think SMU is like really, really talented.
- 28:21Top five offense in the country per SP plus Clemson is a little
- 28:25bit more balanced. They've got a good offense and a
- 28:27good defense, but not not necessarily elites in neither 1.
- 28:30I don't know. I think I just think Lasha has
- 28:32done a really good job. It's kind of funny when when
- 28:34when SMU lost to BYU earlier in the season, we thought, oh man,
- 28:37they must be overrated and they almost lost to Nevada as well.
- 28:40But it turns out BYU was also really good.
- 28:42So you just never know early in the season.
- 28:45I think I think SMU has just done a great job.
- 28:47Brian early in the seasons and rankings.
- 28:51Don't get me started yet. I'll, I'll, I'll be on that
- 28:56soapbox here shortly when we start talking about who's who's
- 28:59going to make the College Football Playoff.
- 29:00But as far as this one, I'm, I'm going Clemson for a lot of
- 29:05reasons. But number one, I think if if
- 29:07you, if Clemson wins, I think the ACC still gets two teams in.
- 29:11I think Miami's getting fucked at this point regardless.
- 29:14Yeah, this is going to obviously be SMU's toughest task to date.
- 29:21Clemson just got out of war with South Carolina, where they could
- 29:23have easily have won that game and been 10 and 2 coming into
- 29:27this game, probably ranked one spot behind them, probably
- 29:31pushed everybody down a little bit.
- 29:33And honestly, I think crowds going to be in their favorites
- 29:38of what, 90 minute drive up from Clemson up to Charlotte.
- 29:41I think Clemson wins a game, but I think this is probably going
- 29:45to be the most entertaining game of the weekend.
- 29:50I think the game is going to go, it's going to hit the over, but
- 29:53I think Clemson sneaks out like a three to five point win.
- 29:59This one is tough. I think Clemson has the better
- 30:02staff, or perhaps I should say the more proven staff, but I
- 30:07just think SMU has more talent across the board.
- 30:09So I'm thinking SMU, but I'm I'm fully aware that Clemson might
- 30:11very well make this a game. Yeah, Tally.
- 30:16Tally is going with Clemson as well.
- 30:18Miranda, Clemson and Jason is riding with you, Sheldon.
- 30:21Oh man. Yeah, saddle up.
- 30:25Yeah, saddle up on your Mustangs Air boys.
- 30:28Yeah, all righty. So one last game to pick and
- 30:33this is the one Jason's gambling on.
- 30:35So we have to put this last, but he's going to Atlanta for
- 30:39Georgia and Texas. Hey folks, welcome back to one
- 30:56more week of guitar licks and gambling picks.
- 30:59I'm Jason Long. It is championship week and here
- 31:02on the Boundary Corner podcast we're picking every game, but
- 31:05the one I'm most excited about is the SEC championship between
- 31:09Georgia and Texas. Now, a few weeks ago when this
- 31:12game was played the first time, I picked Texas, and of course,
- 31:16Georgia went on to win and I lost money.
- 31:18This time around though, Texas is traveling to Atlanta.
- 31:22I think that's going to be a huge advantage for Georgia.
- 31:24So I'm going to flip it. I'm picking the Bulldogs to beat
- 31:28the Longhorns this weekend in the SEC Championship game and a
- 31:32move on to that College Football Playoffs.
- 31:34Now, before we move on, I want to take a look at my season.
- 31:37Now, I've done 14 of these. Technically I'm 6:00 and 8:00,
- 31:41but I did give you a / a few weeks ago that hit.
- 31:45That makes me 7:00 and 8:00. But that is still a losing
- 31:47season so I apologize to anybody who might have been riding along
- 31:51with me and lost money this year.
- 31:53That being said, hey, that's the risk you take when you're
- 31:56gambling, so I want to leave you all with the best advice I ever
- 31:59received. You got no one to hold, no one
- 32:11to walkway when run. You don't count your money when
- 32:18you'll sit and head table the man time and don't come when the
- 32:24demons done. You got nowhere to hold, nowhere
- 32:31to follow, no in the walkway and no in the run.
- 32:37You don't count your money when you'll sit and head table.
- 32:43There'll be time in the count when the deal is done.
- 32:53So happy but responsible gambling this weekend folks.
- 32:57Now don't y'all forget. Check out my website
- 32:59jasonlongmusic.com to hear all of my music.
- 33:02Find out when I'm playing live. I've had a ball doing these and
- 33:06I'll see y'all next time. Have a good one.
- 33:11All righty. So Jason going with the dogs.
- 33:17Literally. And figuratively, literally and
- 33:20figuratively because the line, I do believe it is like a one
- 33:25point favorite. Again, that's another reason we
- 33:27didn't do lines this week because I think the biggest
- 33:30line, let me look this up. I just want to make sure I'm I
- 33:35think the biggest line is 4 this week.
- 33:37Let me get up to my GAMBLING SITE here.
- 33:41I just want to confirm this. Yeah, I think, I think there was
- 33:44a couple 3 and a halfs. It's a 5 1/2 is the biggest line
- 33:48this week. This game is Texas 2 and A.
- 33:54Half, yeah. That's why we did it this way
- 33:57'cause we're just two and a half, 3 1/2, even 55's, not a
- 34:00lot. You get to that areas where it's
- 34:02basically a pickle anyway, so. With so many teams getting rid
- 34:07of divisions, now you're you're getting the, you're literally
- 34:11getting the two best teams in in each of these conferences.
- 34:15There's not going to be that big of a gap in most of these cases.
- 34:19So and when we look at it, you know, a match up like Georgia
- 34:23and Texas here that that goes double.
- 34:27I'm going back to the well here with my reasoning it it's hard
- 34:31to beat A-Team twice. He is.
- 34:36Texas, the first time they played in Austin was still one
- 34:46of the best things I've ever seen and should be done more.
- 34:48When referees buck up calls, just throw beer cans at them and
- 34:52eventually they will get together and make the right
- 34:54call. That should be done more at
- 34:56games. It should not be penalized.
- 34:59You know what? Because for honest truth is, can
- 35:02we go back to Georgia, Georgia Tech real quick last week, those
- 35:06were three of the most atrocious calls I've ever seen.
- 35:09One way, the two PIS and the hold, the hold that was not
- 35:12called. I think people should be allowed
- 35:16to punch refs in faces when they blow that bad of a call.
- 35:21I think it's fair. You just hurt my emotions.
- 35:23I'm going to hurt your face now guys, how do y'all feel about
- 35:27that? Not going to say anything, are
- 35:29you? I do kid about that by the way.
- 35:32But there is no consequences. It's something that I'll say.
- 35:37You put that up there, James, the it's the big A they're going
- 35:41to put, they could lose seven games and they're going to put
- 35:43them in the year they put a six and six Alabama in is the year
- 35:47literally just quit watching college football because it's
- 35:49never about what's going on on the field.
- 35:51But reality is if y'all had, I know some of y'all listen to
- 35:55Josh Pate. I occasionally do.
- 35:58Even if he gets in his SEC bag, He is right.
- 36:02There is an officiating problem in college and it does need to
- 36:06be fixed. But as far as it goes for this
- 36:08game, Quinn Ewers first time they played was coming off an
- 36:11injury. He is still a little banged up
- 36:14but not as bad as he was. Played a great game against A&M
- 36:18by the way. They should have blown out A&M.
- 36:20You fumble the ball multiple times inside the 10 yard line.
- 36:23I think Texas wins by a touchdown.
- 36:29Yeah, Texas lost to Georgia once.
- 36:31It's not going to happen again. Taking Texas.
- 36:35There we go. Hook em, he says.
- 36:37Hook Em, Hook em Another another hooker from Tally.
- 36:40He'll come from Miranda and we know that Jason is riding with
- 36:43the dogs. Jason.
- 36:45Jason's on the ledge by himself on this one.
- 36:49Everybody else is riding with the Longhorns.
- 36:54All righty. So let's take that down and
- 36:59let's do a little brief discussion because we are what I
- 37:03did want to do. And Shelton, I know we didn't
- 37:05get yours, but I'm sure you've got it somewhere jotted down is
- 37:08what's your 12's going to be after the weekend?
- 37:11We're going to do that in just a second.
- 37:12But Brian, let's go, man, because I know it.
- 37:16If you've listened to this program for the last five years,
- 37:19that's one thing. Brian Siegler hates, I mean
- 37:21hates with a passion. And Brian?
- 37:27We still see the preseason rankings rearing their ugly head
- 37:30this deep into the college football season.
- 37:36And I know it's hard to get away from power rankings and stuff
- 37:42like that. But when we put out these
- 37:43official like the, these are the top 12 teams in the country.
- 37:48And the the problem we get is that we base quality of wins off
- 37:55of data that we don't really know was good.
- 38:02And it just, you know, it's, it's the whole bad data in bad
- 38:06data out philosophy. And it takes a while to really
- 38:10get to a point where, you know, you can actually make some,
- 38:15some, some some solid inferences from the, the winds that you're
- 38:20seeing on the field. And, and we end up making a lot
- 38:24of those inferences in September.
- 38:26And those really aren't telling us a whole lot.
- 38:30So now we're at a point where, you know, Alabama still hanging
- 38:34around with three losses. Two of them are, I would
- 38:36consider bad losses to, to teams that barely scraped into a bowl
- 38:40game this year in Oklahoma and and Vanderbilt.
- 38:42And Vanderbilt definitely is a better team than I think a lot
- 38:46of people gave them credit for, full stop.
- 38:48But they are still a team that is 6 and 6.
- 38:52Oklahoma is still a seven and five team that, you know, got
- 38:57blown out by a, a couple of average to, to, to slightly
- 39:02above average teams throughout this season.
- 39:04So to go in there and just curb stomp Alabama, that, that that's
- 39:11a bad loss for them. And, and I think that the
- 39:13problem that we have with we, we talked about it last year.
- 39:17We're we're talking about it again this year.
- 39:19Is that with the, the problem with the committee in general is
- 39:22that number one, I think they still do.
- 39:26Even though they don't put their rankings out until later, they
- 39:28are still colored and shaded by what pre season rankings are.
- 39:34And add to the fact that I don't think they give losses and the
- 39:42on the field outcome enough weight compared to the eye test.
- 39:49I feel like so much is eye test and OK, well, you know, who did
- 39:55you play? And, and, and it's kind of funny
- 39:57because we were looking at I think we were looking to
- 39:59strength of schedule, Curtis and you know, we compared I think it
- 40:04was SMU in Alabama and they're like 70 and 71 or something like
- 40:08that. You.
- 40:08Were you weren't? You weren't looking at that.
- 40:10You were looking at something else.
- 40:11You were looking at another metric.
- 40:13It was not strength of schedule. I don't know what you were
- 40:15looking at. Shelton might know.
- 40:18Anyway, there there was a metric we were looking at that that had
- 40:21them, you know, within, within a margin of each other.
- 40:26And, and, and when we look at some of the other pieces here,
- 40:29like when we look at, like I said, Alabama in particular, but
- 40:36they're, you can make a case for, for, for some of these
- 40:38other teams as well as that, you know, we, we need to I think
- 40:43penalize teams for bad losses more than we are and more than
- 40:47the College Football Playoff has historically.
- 40:50Losses in general. Yeah, losses in general, but bad
- 40:53losses even more so. So that that's my soapbox.
- 40:57I'll let I'll pass it on to Curtis and Sheldon here to to to
- 41:01add their two cents here. Well, I want to pitch to Shelton
- 41:03because Sheldon, you're our, you're our dad on stats guy.
- 41:07Do you believe there is something out there that is an
- 41:10unbiased metric that's not looking at polls?
- 41:13What do you feel like if if you were, if they called you
- 41:17tomorrow, somehow they, they, they found this and they found
- 41:21this as a smart kid. Let's put him in charge.
- 41:24Is there a certain metric or is there a certain data point out
- 41:27there? Do you say that could be the
- 41:31beginning of the methodology right here?
- 41:34Honestly, look, there's no such thing as a perfect stat.
- 41:36Like at the end of the day, you know, there's always going to be
- 41:39different numbers that can portray something a different
- 41:41way. You know, you could look at, you
- 41:43know, top 25 wins or strength of record, strength of schedule.
- 41:46Like it's just, you know, when you're dealing with numbers and
- 41:49stats, there's always a different way you can present
- 41:51something. And so I, I certainly don't envy
- 41:53the, the position of the committee just because there's
- 41:55only, you know, 12 teams, A12 game season, pretty limited
- 41:58sample size. If we just don't have the body
- 42:00of work to really, I guess, hash out a, a true representation of,
- 42:05of what each team really is. Because, you know, I, I saw
- 42:08David Hale there, they had this tweet where he, you know, made a
- 42:11case for why every top 20, top 25 team was actually bad, you
- 42:14know, looking at all their bad losses and they're, you know, if
- 42:17they have a bad check of the schedule and so forth.
- 42:18So I mean, I mean, everyone kind of beats everyone in college
- 42:21football. So at some point you do have to,
- 42:22you know, kind of acknowledge that.
- 42:23But, you know, I guess to answer the question, you know, I'm a
- 42:26big fan of strength of record, looking at the overall quality
- 42:29of wins in, in terms of a qualitative judgment.
- 42:31You know, I don't like looking at, say, for instance, win loss
- 42:35record versus top 20 teams or Top 40 teams or, you know, wins
- 42:39over 500 because that's a very narrowly defined subset.
- 42:43And it is sort of like a, you know, self self fulfilling
- 42:46prophecy. If you beat a team that finishes
- 42:49five and seven, you don't get credit for A500 win, but if you
- 42:52lose to them, they're six and six and that counts as a loss.
- 42:54So you know, that kind of makes itself.
- 42:56So I mean, there's ways I think, I think with, you know, today's
- 42:59analytics and everything, like there's ways you can have, you
- 43:01know, much better judgments for evaluating teams, again, like
- 43:05strength of record. But I just think it, it just
- 43:09seems like, you know, people, people are always going to be
- 43:11unhappy, I guess. And so I don't, you know,
- 43:14necessarily criticize the committee too much.
- 43:16But I do think in general, they tend to sort of work backwards
- 43:20from their conclusions. Like they work backwards from
- 43:23like, OK, what is the best SC team?
- 43:25And let's try to, you know, vouch for them and they'll,
- 43:28they'll look at anything, any stat that would that justifies
- 43:31their argument, they'll, they'll go with that.
- 43:32So I don't know. I, I just don't think they have
- 43:34a very clear process for how they kind of evaluate things.
- 43:36It kind of changes every year. Well, you know what I dislike
- 43:39and it and it happened tonight with the committee chair is data
- 43:43value different things for different teams.
- 43:45That's where I get upset. Like this is they're really good
- 43:49because of this. Well, they're better than them
- 43:51at that. Oh, well, that we're not going
- 43:53to look at that. We're going to look at this for
- 43:54this one and then this for this one.
- 43:55It's like, So what you're saying is your real goal is you want
- 44:01the biggest brands in. That's all they should say.
- 44:03I wish they would just say it. If they just fucking say it.
- 44:06Hey, is what it is. We get it.
- 44:08Hey, remember when we were in school and there was like, you
- 44:11know, you'd write a paper and there'd be a fucking rubric for
- 44:13the paper, right? Yeah, give me a fucking college
- 44:16football rubric and give me all right, this is weighted this
- 44:20many points. This is weighted this many
- 44:22points. So at least we can understand
- 44:24the process. And because when you when you
- 44:29have a boy more transparent process, you can at least say,
- 44:32OK, well, you can point to this and say This is why this team is
- 44:35better. You might not agree with it, but
- 44:37there is at least a justification behind that.
- 44:40It's not moving the goal post. It's not whatever the dollars
- 44:44and the ayes say. It's at least a very fixed
- 44:48matter of getting to the end point there.
- 44:52You're on mute, Curtis. But here's the thing, if they
- 44:57did that in the beginning, then they couldn't justify certain
- 45:00teams because if one people in the the bad metrics and it's
- 45:04like, Hey, that's what you said you'd go by and we really like
- 45:07that team. We leave that team in like, no,
- 45:09but I'm with you, Brian. If you actually were to put a
- 45:13rubric out there like that and have everything in the way it's
- 45:16weighted, then there'd be no questions.
- 45:18Because then also as certain people fell into certain
- 45:22rubrics, they couldn't back off of it be like, no, this is this
- 45:25is your methodology. This is what you're saying is
- 45:28going to determine the best 12 teams.
- 45:32Yeah, there's always going to be that like 1 anomaly team that
- 45:35doesn't has a really good record, but doesn't check very
- 45:39many boxes. And then on the on the flip
- 45:41side, there's going to be a team that may not have the best
- 45:45record, but they check a handful more boxes.
- 45:48And this at least gives you kind of a step by step way of
- 45:53justifying putting that one team in over the other or vice versa.
- 45:58Because right now we, it feels like we're cherry picking
- 46:01whatever stat we we can to get the, the lowest SEC team in that
- 46:08still has a chance into this thing every year, whether it's
- 46:11four or or 12. 100% I am looking currently at the AP poll at the
- 46:20beginning of the season. Let's see how good they were.
- 46:24You all ready? Yep, Georgia was number one.
- 46:29They've had a solid season. Ohio State Say what you will,
- 46:34they've won 10. Games.
- 46:35Both of those are within the margin of error.
- 46:37Right margin of error. Marriage and error.
- 46:39Oregon ranked number three. Yeah.
- 46:43Texas #4 Alabama's five. Ole Missus 6.
- 46:49Notre Dame 7. Penn State 8.
- 46:51This is where it gets fun. Brian #9 y'all remember who the
- 46:55number 9 team was this year? This is the number Michigan.
- 47:00Michigan. OK, Florida State was 11, right?
- 47:04Florida State was 10. Florida State was 10.
- 47:06OK. OK, so there's that value where
- 47:09you're talking about now Florida State within the first month, no
- 47:13one value to win over them, might even do the doors off
- 47:15them. But you know what I could say?
- 47:17Well, they were top ten at one point.
- 47:19Shouldn't that matter? No, no, no, that doesn't matter.
- 47:22Guess who 11 was? And this one's going to piss you
- 47:24off. Who's that?
- 47:28Missouri and Missouri still ranked 25th.
- 47:33Then we get to Utah. Bad season for the utes LSU fell
- 47:37out of the top 25 with losses. Clemson still hanging in
- 47:40Tennessee. Great season after being ranked
- 47:4315th. Oklahoma was preseason ranked
- 47:4516th. Oklahoma State was 17th.
- 47:53They didn't want a conference game.
- 47:56They didn't want a conference game.
- 47:58Beat Arkansas. Arkansas beat Tennessee.
- 48:00So tell me how that makes sense, doesn't It's why you play the
- 48:04game on the field and wins the most important Kansas State, who
- 48:07just fell out, and then Miami. This is the bottom of the top
- 48:1225. Texas A&M, Kansas, USC, North
- 48:16Carolina State, Iowa, they basically it's a coin flip if
- 48:20they've got any of them, a coin flip.
- 48:24And this is where Brian's point always becomes big.
- 48:28This is what we're basing things off of.
- 48:31This is what we're looking at the beginning, because in this
- 48:35sense, Missouri is 9 and three. Missouri is not a, is not a top
- 48:4025 team. They really aren't, but they
- 48:43stick in there because they started at 11 and they never got
- 48:46below 3 losses. We're A-Team like Duke or
- 48:49Syracuse. I don't, I know they both beat
- 48:51us. Pisses me off.
- 48:53They're both nine and three. Only Syracuse got ranked.
- 48:59So hey, all right, so real quick, we we've talked about the
- 49:04College Football Playoff. Let's lean into it.
- 49:09I'm going to start with you, Sheldon, because I don't have
- 49:11your stuff up here. So you've got your predictions
- 49:14in for the conference championship games.
- 49:16What do you think? Just go your top 12.
- 49:20Obviously, we can figure out who the four bys are by reading it
- 49:24down. Yeah, so bys Oregon, Texas, SMU,
- 49:30Boise, and then at large Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia,
- 49:36Tennessee, Ohio State, Indiana, reluctantly Alabama, and then
- 49:41Arizona State as the final AQ. All right.
- 49:46Which if you look at that, what's your most intriguing
- 49:49first floor matchup? Let me see Penn State, Arizona,
- 49:54Notre Dame, Alabama, George, Indiana.
- 49:57I don't know. I guess I'd go Notre Dame
- 50:00Alabama because that game is interesting.
- 50:02Because if I had to guess, Alabama, Alabama will be a
- 50:06slight underdog because they're on the road.
- 50:08But if that game were played on neutral field, I think Alabama
- 50:11would probably be favored. They've actually under, they've
- 50:14underperformed from their metrics a little bit.
- 50:16So I, I do think they're, they're probably qualitatively
- 50:18better than people think they are.
- 50:19But that would be a really, really close game.
- 50:22And I do think people are under selling Alvin a little bit.
- 50:24I know they aren't what they used to be, but they've still
- 50:27got some good football in them. So I'd be, I'd be very
- 50:30interested to see what, what would be into made of a matchup
- 50:32like that. All right, Brian, what about
- 50:37you? All right, so AQ buys, I've got
- 50:42Oregon, Texas, Boise, Clemson at large and this is in order of
- 50:48rank is going to be Notre Dame, Penn State, Georgia, Ohio State,
- 50:54Tennessee, Indiana, Arizona State, SMU all.
- 51:01Right. So looking at your core or your
- 51:06your first four games, which one intrigues you the most?
- 51:11You know, looking at this man, it's going to be, I got a couple
- 51:16like, you know, clash of styles here.
- 51:22I think my most intriguing is going to be Arizona State at
- 51:28Happy Valley Penn State. Hey, White running back
- 51:33downhill. Yeah, exactly.
- 51:35I mean, it's, it's good. I think that's interesting.
- 51:37I could, I could point to Notre Dame and SMU for very similar
- 51:40reasons, but I think I'll go with, with Penn State.
- 51:44Arizona State, probably least intriguing is going to be
- 51:48Georgia. Indiana could be interesting,
- 51:54but I, I feel like that's, that's going to be, I think
- 51:57Georgia handles them fairly well.
- 51:59Ohio State, Tennessee I think is going to be an interesting one
- 52:02as well. But in just in terms of like
- 52:04thinking of where it is, what the weather is going to be like,
- 52:09style of play, it's it's got to be Penn State, Arizona State for
- 52:14me. All righty.
- 52:16I'll give mine real quick here. So automatic qualifiers, Oregon,
- 52:22Texas, Iowa State, Clemson, those are 4A QS.
- 52:29Then it goes as follows, Notre Dame, Penn State, Georgia,
- 52:33Tennessee, Ohio State, SMU and then UNLV.
- 52:44My most intriguing game of those is Tennessee, Ohio State.
- 52:50It really is. And the reason I say that
- 52:52because if I'm not mistaken, the 8-9 goes to the goes to the one,
- 53:00right? Yes, a nine goes to one.
- 53:05I'm more intrigued by that game there because a Tennessee is one
- 53:09of those places. It's in the hills, it's in the
- 53:11mountains, It's cold. There is no effectively
- 53:14advantage for a for them with Ohio State, Ohio State, Ohio is
- 53:18cold. But the question is, can Ohio
- 53:21State actually get to the level where they can play?
- 53:25And I mean, when I say that, can they get to the level with all
- 53:27that talent? That's the one.
- 53:31Like, if, if you ask me right now, that would be your Saturday
- 53:33night 8:00 game, probably the Notre Dame.
- 53:37Look who's joined us, finally. Can can Ryan Day win a big game
- 53:41that matters? Who knows, man, But I think,
- 53:44hey, he's here. What's happening?
- 53:46Tally. I made it.
- 53:49You barely. You are barely bare.
- 53:54You all good, man? You all good.
- 53:56We just get in here telling lies about what the top 12 is going
- 53:59to be. Shelter's got Alabama in.
- 54:02I got them out. Everybody but have Alabama in,
- 54:06they're in. They ain't letting them out.
- 54:09They got, they got to have that money.
- 54:11They got to have that better money.
- 54:13Tally's saying the whole team could get sick and die and they
- 54:16somehow put them in. Right.
- 54:17They put them in man, once. I once I knew they weren't going
- 54:22once they had a couple of convincing wins and I and they
- 54:24weren't going to the SEC Championship.
- 54:27So it was no way for them to to lose that game.
- 54:29I said yeah, they did. As as as soon as I saw them at
- 54:3311 and not 12, I was like, they really going to try to get them
- 54:37in. They they, they really going to
- 54:39get them in. They going to try, they going to
- 54:41try their damnedest out. I think, you know, SMU losing
- 54:46could throw some some, some some janky stuff in there.
- 54:50I think if SMU was behind, who is it behind Indiana?
- 54:56They would definitely. They wouldn't.
- 54:57They wouldn't survive it. They wouldn't.
- 54:59Survive a loss. I think being in front of
- 55:01Indiana, it's going to be interesting.
- 55:02It's. Going to be interesting because
- 55:04do you drop like in my position here I got UNLV, do you drop
- 55:09them two spots? That's it.
- 55:13You got you got UNLV jumping I and I.
- 55:16I get what you're doing. I don't foresee that scenario.
- 55:19Well, again, I looked at that game from earlier this season
- 55:22and when you hold Janetti to under 4 yards, you carry.
- 55:25I think they can do it again and that's why I think they can pull
- 55:28the upset because again, they got to beat them twice in the
- 55:30same seat. Yeah, and that's the thing
- 55:34that's. Oh, go ahead.
- 55:36No. No, go ahead.
- 55:38I'll just say that's the thing like about Texas and Texas and
- 55:43Georgia, you know what I'm I'm saying it's like you got to play
- 55:48somebody twice. It's in the season.
- 55:51It's rough to beat you somebody twice, you know what I'm saying?
- 55:54But both of. Oh oh, we lost your mic tally.
- 56:00We got the Alabama buffer. Going y'all lose me?
- 56:02We lost your mic. That was weird.
- 56:04Like you're still moving normal and everything.
- 56:07Yeah, it's going to be interesting.
- 56:08I mean, and, and, and, and I don't know if you got a chance
- 56:11to get your who you think the 12's going to be.
- 56:13Obviously Alabama's going to be #11 or #12 per you.
- 56:17Let's just put that on there Is you're looking kind of that in
- 56:22your head about what could break out because you've got, let me
- 56:25just put it up here, tally, just so you can get your points in
- 56:27the air because you got Texas winning, you got Clemson
- 56:31winning. You got found it out here.
- 56:35You got Arizona State winning, you got Boise winning.
- 56:38So you're saying boys is going to get a buy?
- 56:41Yeah, I think boys are going to win and get a buy.
- 56:43Boys are wins and gets a buy and you got Oregon.
- 56:47So I mean, as you look at the other teams that are going to
- 56:51make it, do you think I'll ask you this, do you think it's
- 56:54going to be Notre Dame, Alabama on that on the 20 or 21st?
- 56:59Are they going to make that game that the the like the prized
- 57:04game of the week? Probably.
- 57:06I mean, that's, that's, that's a good, yeah, that's a good set
- 57:11up, you know what I'm saying? Because you're bringing two big
- 57:15money markets together and that's what they want.
- 57:19And it's got some history. Even though Manti Te'o's
- 57:23girlfriend wasn't real and I think the last time they played
- 57:25each other and all of that. But yeah, that they want, they
- 57:30want something like that. That's we'll probably see
- 57:33something like that. And that stuff we expect as fans
- 57:36to that stuff. That's one reason we all get
- 57:38excited about the playoff, that a a lot more teams have the
- 57:41opportunity to get a chance to go play, potentially win and
- 57:45then the big matchups. And then it's going to be big
- 57:47matchups not at bowl games, but at home fields.
- 57:51Because tally it. It was like 56 down there today.
- 57:54It was like 21 up in South Bend. It's probably like 15 there
- 57:58tonight and that I think they make.
- 58:00That no, it was like, it's like 39 here.
- 58:04That was during the day. Yeah, it's like 30.
- 58:08I think it got up to like 42. It's been cold.
- 58:15Hey, it's cold here too, man. We What do we do?
- 58:19Here. I'm I'm wearing layers.
- 58:21If I'm wearing layers, it's cold out.
- 58:23It's. Cold.
- 58:24It's cold. All right.
- 58:26Yeah, There you go. That's the way.
- 58:28That's the way a lot of people are feeling right now, Robbie.
- 58:31So you put it out there. Tally, tally, Robbie's on board
- 58:33with you here. Yeah, Think we'll let him loose.
- 58:36All right, well, let's get to it.
- 58:38We went through big screeners. We talked about the playoff.
- 58:41Let's get to what happened on Saturday night at Lane Stadium.
- 58:43Let's do a little tell the truth on Tuesday and y'all tell me
- 58:49tell me what y'all feel. I don't care who starts and what
- 58:51it's about. Just tell me what you feel.
- 58:53We go six and six. We make a bowl again.
- 58:56Yay. Guess I'm happy about that.
- 58:59Me and tally people get probably roasted us all them too, dummy
- 59:02Say UVA was going to win. I'm Yeah what we were in our
- 59:06feelings last week. Yeah, that's all I'm going to
- 59:08say. We were in our fields last week
- 59:10so but. What everybody forgot for a
- 59:13second that UVA is ass. There you go.
- 59:15But what in what in y'all's opinion?
- 59:18Y'all love Saturday night? What went well for y'all?
- 59:21I love seeing the two best players on the team eat one last
- 59:26time. APR facial tube.
- 59:31Love seeing that. Sheldon, what about you?
- 59:36Man, well, I missed, I missed a good check of the first half.
- 59:40I caught most of the second-half.
- 59:41I did. I did rewatch the majority of
- 59:43the first half a couple days ago, but I don't know, I mean, I
- 59:45thought I thought Pop was really good.
- 59:48They it seemed like they kind of structured the passing game
- 59:51around the strengths, you know, kind of mostly rolling them out,
- 59:54you know, quick reads, nothing too complex and deep shots to
- 59:58kind of protect him a little bit.
- 59:59So I thought Bowen did a really good job of kind of managing the
- 1:00:01game with Pop and they kind of maximize, maximize the skill
- 1:00:05sets. Yeah, deep shots, RP OS
- 1:00:09rollouts, I mean, that was basically basically what they
- 1:00:13went with. And they I mean, it was a it was
- 1:00:15a key to success and they did a good job executing.
- 1:00:17And I think pop the, the one thing I noticed about pop is in
- 1:00:21in this is I think even better compared to, you know, what we
- 1:00:25saw the week before with the week of practice against the UVA
- 1:00:30team. So we'll, we'll caveat it there.
- 1:00:34Pretty decisive with with whether it was running the
- 1:00:37football, whether it was keeping it, whether it was getting the
- 1:00:40ball out of his hands on the RPO.
- 1:00:43He he made decisions pretty quick and kind of rode with
- 1:00:46that. It wasn't any second guessing or
- 1:00:50pussyfoot did the back feel like when when he made a decision to
- 1:00:53do something he did it. Kylie, what about you, man?
- 1:00:57What? What caught your eye Saturday?
- 1:00:59Sitting there at the hell? Probably eating some leftovers,
- 1:01:03having a drink. Yeah, no, a little bit of that,
- 1:01:07a little bit of none of that. But yeah, just they mainly, it
- 1:01:13was like they knew they was better than UVA.
- 1:01:15They went out and and played like they were better.
- 1:01:18Like the coaches coached like they weren't scared.
- 1:01:20They coached like they knew they was going to win.
- 1:01:22The players act like they knew they were going to win.
- 1:01:25We just went in the game and played, you know what I'm
- 1:01:27saying? If we went into some other games
- 1:01:30like that instead of being like, well, shoot, we can't do this
- 1:01:33because this person might get hurt or we can't do this because
- 1:01:36we may lose. We probably would have won.
- 1:01:38So I just feel like they knew they would have better team and
- 1:01:41they just went, but they've been doing that like it's it's been
- 1:01:44happening. When they know that better than
- 1:01:46the team, they go play. If they think it's a chance that
- 1:01:49we could lose, we get a hold on, we might shouldn't do that.
- 1:01:53We may should try this. I don't know, man, but what went
- 1:01:59well where we just knew we were better than them and we went and
- 1:02:01played like it. Tally we, we've talked about
- 1:02:03this a lot with like the confidence of this team and
- 1:02:06maybe even specific players too. When this team plays with
- 1:02:08confidence, whether it's players coaches, they're a different
- 1:02:13team. They, they, they look like what
- 1:02:15we expected them to be from the start of the season to the end
- 1:02:19of the season, when they play with that type of confidence and
- 1:02:21when they coach with that type of confidence.
- 1:02:23And you know, we talked about some games them getting
- 1:02:26conservative on offense and defense.
- 1:02:27And we didn't really, you know, when, when UVA started moving
- 1:02:31the football on defense against our defense, I mean, we didn't
- 1:02:35hold back on offense. We, we, we leaned on what we do.
- 1:02:38Well, we got up there, got another touchdown, put the game
- 1:02:41out of reach. And, and that's, that was that.
- 1:02:44I think we we didn't overthink it like we have in some of those
- 1:02:48other games where, you know, the asshole is a little tight and
- 1:02:52we're not playing with that type of confidence or coaching with
- 1:02:55that type. Of confidence.
- 1:02:56I love what you said, Tally right there about how when we
- 1:02:58know we're better than a team, the confidence shows.
- 1:03:01When we think about it, we have moments, but we also in those
- 1:03:06moments, there are some moments where it's just like go to
- 1:03:08Miami, 17 1/2 point underdogs. And we just played in that
- 1:03:14throughout that whole game, even up to the last Hail Mary throw.
- 1:03:19We can win this game. We can win this game.
- 1:03:21Go to parts of the second-half of Vanderbilt way back in
- 1:03:24August, Think about it. And oh man, this isn't good.
- 1:03:28And then the second-half starts rolling.
- 1:03:29It's like we can win this game. And then what happens?
- 1:03:31We have one bad thing and then it just snowballs.
- 1:03:35And that to me is on coaching more than it is kids.
- 1:03:38These are 17 to 23 and some 24 year old guys out there.
- 1:03:44Again, Sheldon, you're like 25. You're just you're getting past
- 1:03:47that age. 26 Don't tell me short.
- 1:03:49You know, I was telling you a little bit younger, but you're
- 1:03:5226. And The thing is, everybody has
- 1:03:55that when you're in your 20s. You can have you can, you can
- 1:03:57have everything going for you in the world.
- 1:03:58And then one bad thing happens and it you up, straight up,
- 1:04:02whether it be a bad grade fight with your girlfriend, fight with
- 1:04:06a friend, it can match you up. And these guys are asked to do
- 1:04:09this every week. I'm going to go same route.
- 1:04:11Brian, you mentioned APR 8 because he was creating chaos. 3
- 1:04:16sacks should have got that phone.
- 1:04:18I'm still trying to figure out how he did not get that fumble
- 1:04:20recovery in my life. But I'm going to ask you all
- 1:04:23this. To me, there's a Pantheon or a
- 1:04:27Rushmore, 4 defensive ends in Virginia Tech history that go up
- 1:04:30there. Bruce Smith, Corey Moore, Daryl
- 1:04:37Tap, and I'm blanking on the guy from Lynchburg to play the
- 1:04:40glass. Brown, Cornell Brown.
- 1:04:43With the seasons he's had, I love Daryl Tap.
- 1:04:47We've interviewed him. Does he bump Daryl Tap off to
- 1:04:50Rushmore and is he effectively the defensive end?
- 1:04:52Rushmore. I mean you can definitely make
- 1:04:58that argument. I think if if he played one more
- 1:05:01season for the Hokies it would be a no brainer.
- 1:05:03If he even if he had a season like last year compared to this
- 1:05:07year, I think you'll be a no brainer.
- 1:05:09I think we're just looking at the the the two year sample
- 1:05:12size. You can make it argue it.
- 1:05:14I don't know if it if it quite gets there, but you can
- 1:05:16definitely make an argument. I think for him, because of the
- 1:05:21transfer portal and stuff, because most of the other guys
- 1:05:23came in and being like you want to say it's just because their
- 1:05:28college career, but it also has to do kind of how to get drafted
- 1:05:32and then what they do after they get drafted.
- 1:05:33So for him going to Florida, then coming back to Virginia
- 1:05:37Tech through the transfer portal, and like Brian had said,
- 1:05:40if he had one more season, but he doesn't, I think it'll come
- 1:05:43down to where he gets drafted in most like Hokey's heads.
- 1:05:47Like if he goes first round or high second round, I think
- 1:05:51people would be like, yeah, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:05:54If he slips down to the third round or, or whatever the case
- 1:05:57may be, you know, then people will be like, you know, they
- 1:06:01won't really think about it. But if he goes high, like, you
- 1:06:04know, some are predicting he will, then I think people would
- 1:06:07100% go, yeah, he's he's there. You know, you got to bump this
- 1:06:11person off whoever, anybody besides Bruce, you know what I'm
- 1:06:15saying? Like most people would say.
- 1:06:17But that's just my opinion. Your music, Curtis.
- 1:06:28Oh, I thought it was me. No, tell him you.
- 1:06:32Yeah, yeah. So what was the what's the
- 1:06:34problem I was researchers on? Defensive end don't watch more
- 1:06:38tech Smith or more. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:06:44I don't know if I'm qualified because I wasn't around for the
- 1:06:46glory days of BT football. So like my, you know, my top
- 1:06:51defensive ends are like obviously APR and then outside
- 1:06:54of that, I mean. Can a Kingdom?
- 1:06:57Yeah, it can. Who?
- 1:06:59I mean, who Trayvon. I mean Trayvon Hill, honestly,
- 1:07:01like if you're just talking my time frame of watching BT
- 1:07:03football, that like that's who that's who'd be the Mount
- 1:07:06Rushmore. My daddy, Daddy.
- 1:07:08Daddy. Yeah, daddy.
- 1:07:10So I mean, there've been a handful of decent ones, but
- 1:07:12yeah, I'm just not. I mean, obviously, you know,
- 1:07:14Corey Moore, I don't know, I I just, I just wasn't around for
- 1:07:18the glory days. So I don't know if I can really
- 1:07:19comment. I love putting you always.
- 1:07:22Sheldon's always gets to throw that out every time.
- 1:07:24He's I was, I was like 3. I don't know.
- 1:07:27Yes, yeah. So in Sheldon's eyes, he gets 2
- 1:07:29spots, he gets two. He gets 2 spots on Mount
- 1:07:32Rushmore because he's so, you know, he's young, he hasn't seen
- 1:07:35a a lot of, you know, defensive ends, but he.
- 1:07:39Absolutely say they have to be there because of all the
- 1:07:41accolades. Then APR gets 2 spots.
- 1:07:44All right, where do y'all? Where do y'all want us to go for
- 1:07:48a bowl? Birmingham, Birmingham tell.
- 1:07:52Them tally. Tell them tally.
- 1:07:56Tally Walton. Just so Bolton.
- 1:07:58I don't want to go back to Fenway.
- 1:08:00Fuck Fenway. We've never been to Fenway.
- 1:08:04I don't want to go to Fenway. I don't.
- 1:08:06Want to go to Fenway? I could probably.
- 1:08:07Get I've been to, say, Yankee Stadium, but I don't want to go
- 1:08:10there either. I've seen somebody.
- 1:08:13One of the predictions had us like against West Virginia
- 1:08:17somewhere, maybe armed forces ball or something.
- 1:08:19Fort Worth, Yeah, I saw. That something like that
- 1:08:21probably I mean, I don't know about Fort Worth, but I feel
- 1:08:24like opponent like playing against West Virginia probably
- 1:08:28would be good for us anywhere they go.
- 1:08:31It don't matter if we five and six, six and six, ten and six,
- 1:08:40Virginia Tech, Hokey Nation going to show up.
- 1:08:43So wherever they put us, they're going to have they're going to
- 1:08:46have Hoagie fans that for sure. Curtis said don't rain like it
- 1:08:50did last year. Oh my God, first bowl experience
- 1:08:54in a monsoon. We're not going back there.
- 1:08:58I don't think they're going to send us a Fenway just because
- 1:09:01for the simple fact that there's too many other good options
- 1:09:04where they can finagle us in. I'll, I'll go with Tally, get it
- 1:09:09to Birmingham. So that man go see his team play
- 1:09:11this year in person. We had a lot of stuff going on
- 1:09:13where we didn't get to make games this year.
- 1:09:15Shelton made enough for I think all of us.
- 1:09:18But yeah, give me that. All right, let's talk about the
- 1:09:21bad because there's there is one thing that went bad in my
- 1:09:25opinion. Tony Musket was the only damn
- 1:09:29thing they have running the ball and then off of those runs
- 1:09:32making some intermediate throws. And it literally took us until
- 1:09:36early in the fourth, mid fourth quarter to finally stop it.
- 1:09:39Yeah, I was sitting over here drinking my OGD, worried like,
- 1:09:43we're going to blow this game. We're going to blow.
- 1:09:45They're going to do something stupid because we've done
- 1:09:47something stupid all year. And they're going to score a
- 1:09:50touchdown. And then we're going to fumble.
- 1:09:52And then they're going to score another one and we're going to
- 1:09:53get in our heads and we're going to do this.
- 1:09:55Game Curtis saw another one score let down PTSD late late
- 1:09:59late in the third quarter he looked at the third he's like
- 1:10:02we're +2 in this quarter and I feel like shit I'm.
- 1:10:06Messing you that like we won this quarter but what?
- 1:10:09What else did y'all feel just watching the game?
- 1:10:11And I know it's like a 17 point win.
- 1:10:13It's like you can't find all the bad in that.
- 1:10:15But anything that just pissed y'all off made you want to throw
- 1:10:18shit. Yeah, you don't want to nitpick,
- 1:10:20you know, a good win like that, but just because we got to,
- 1:10:25that's why we're here. I feel like some of the
- 1:10:27offensive play calling was just unneeded, you know what I'm
- 1:10:32saying? Like a couple of reverses that
- 1:10:33we did could have went really bad.
- 1:10:37I think we fumbled. One yeah, the green yeah Cam
- 1:10:39knocked it out of green. Tan you.
- 1:10:41Know we had a couple of times where I just felt like we did a
- 1:10:43couple things with that situation because I feel like we
- 1:10:46were better than them. We just lined up and you know,
- 1:10:49you could, you could use some, some motion and stuff.
- 1:10:52But I feel like some of the play calls we just was kind of
- 1:10:56throwing stuff against the wall and hoping it's stuck.
- 1:10:59And if we were playing anybody else besides UVA, it wouldn't
- 1:11:02have stuck. Yeah, and I and I feel like we.
- 1:11:04Didn't really that's just right. Like I think that's.
- 1:11:07That's the thing. Like, we didn't need to do that,
- 1:11:09like, right? Sometimes it was getting too
- 1:11:10cute, right? Right, I'd love.
- 1:11:13To do I Duke Mayo bowl. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:16I mean, Duke Mayo is probably my favorite.
- 1:11:18Like non bowl any any bowl that doesn't really matter.
- 1:11:22Duke's my favorite so. Charlotte.
- 1:11:25Charlotte. Exactly.
- 1:11:26We want Charlotte. We do.
- 1:11:28Let's see if they'll give it to us.
- 1:11:29Let's see if ever get 2 teams into play all weekend.
- 1:11:32They flirt with us every year. They'll, they'll, they'll throw,
- 1:11:34they'll throw Lane in there every year and be like, hey,
- 1:11:37maybe. So, Sheldon, what about you?
- 1:11:40Data statistical wise? What went bad on Saturday?
- 1:11:45What went bad, man? I don't know.
- 1:11:48It's hard to really hard to pick too much.
- 1:11:50I mean, I mean 5 penalties for 61 yards, I guess like not, you
- 1:11:54know, not great. And then obviously a couple of
- 1:11:57big, you know, explosives towards the second in the
- 1:12:00second-half. But I don't know, I mean, I I
- 1:12:02thought it was a good performance all around.
- 1:12:04Like I really don't have any too many complaints honestly.
- 1:12:06Like you know you're favored by how, how much should it?
- 1:12:105 1/2, it got down to 5 1/2 like yeah.
- 1:12:13And and 1 by 1 by 20. So I just, I'm not going to
- 1:12:16nitpick a win like this is. It but a third screen
- 1:12:18quarterback. Yeah, third screen quarterback.
- 1:12:20Too. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 1:12:22There was an argument going and and I listened to Hokey Hangover
- 1:12:25yesterday and like people and people have been saying how have
- 1:12:29they hid pop? How have they hid pop?
- 1:12:31What did we say at the beginning of the season?
- 1:12:33And this is when people don't listen.
- 1:12:35We said the best thing that Pop was third string was why he ran
- 1:12:39the scout team every single week.
- 1:12:42Pop got so many reps leading in the season.
- 1:12:45That's why he didn't look rusty. That's why he didn't look funky.
- 1:12:48He'd been playing football every week as a scout team
- 1:12:51quarterback. Y'all know it was him because if
- 1:12:54you saw on Saturday all the stuff he does, it's like you can
- 1:12:57emulate that. He can put, he can throw the
- 1:12:58deep ball good. He sells fakes good.
- 1:13:01So Andrew Alex was like, why is he third string?
- 1:13:03Everybody on the Twittersphere? Oh, why is he third string?
- 1:13:06Why? Because he's a red shirt
- 1:13:08freshman all of y'all. If he had been too deep, y'all
- 1:13:10would have been losing your mind is like, why is the red shirt
- 1:13:13freshman to back up? That's not good.
- 1:13:16If you did that, you'd have everybody would have been
- 1:13:18critical of of even using wasting a scholarship on Collins
- 1:13:21League exactly. So somebody would have been
- 1:13:24bitching about something. I think the main thing is just
- 1:13:27his size, the way that he plays. If they're looking for him to be
- 1:13:33there for a while, they got to protect him, you know, and you
- 1:13:37got to get that nutritious point, that nutrition, playing
- 1:13:40in him as much as you can before he sees the field, so.
- 1:13:44Yeah. We've seen him late in the
- 1:13:45season. I don't even remember what he
- 1:13:47looked like at the beginning of the season or even in the
- 1:13:49spring. I mean, I knew he's I knew since
- 1:13:51high school he was he was a he was good.
- 1:13:53He could ball. But taking the kind of hits and
- 1:13:57things like that is like it, it, it gets you hurt.
- 1:14:01You know what I'm saying? I mean, look at Kyron.
- 1:14:03Yeah, I mean, is he built for 12 games, right?
- 1:14:06Now. So with him, though, he went
- 1:14:10from 170 out of high school, he's up to like 190.
- 1:14:13He's getting. You wish you had one more year,
- 1:14:17right? You wish you had one more year
- 1:14:19of him to get more meat on the bone, a little bit of fat, a
- 1:14:24little bit bigger. Because I think the way he
- 1:14:25moves, it's not going to take that away.
- 1:14:28You might. If he can get to 196 by, you
- 1:14:31know, start of fall camp next year, 197, you know, you might
- 1:14:34feel pretty good about it. Put that man on the steak and
- 1:14:37potatoes plan. You know another, you know, 6 to
- 1:14:418 lbs on him. I think you you're in a, you're
- 1:14:43in a pretty good spot there. I don't think you ever going to
- 1:14:46get him much over 200 regardless of what you do so.
- 1:14:49Who's he remind y'all of? Like just say, if you looked
- 1:14:52across college football right now, I think they said it during
- 1:14:55the broadcast. Who's he?
- 1:14:57Who's he remind y'all of? I'll see if y'all.
- 1:15:00You really reminds me of Tracy Mcsorley at Penn State.
- 1:15:04OK, that's the white. Quarterback like 511, like 100
- 1:15:06and 95200 lbs. That's who he reminds me of in
- 1:15:09the weight with a better arm. Who Brian?
- 1:15:13Who you think? Oh, let me, let me think of on
- 1:15:16this for a second. Sheldon.
- 1:15:20I'm, I'm going to go back a little bit.
- 1:15:22Give give me Denard Robinson. OK, shoeless.
- 1:15:26Yeah. Oh, Sheldon, who you thinking?
- 1:15:33I don't know. I think he reminds me of Tommy
- 1:15:36Castellanos. OK.
- 1:15:38The way that he moves, you know, he I think he's a has a little
- 1:15:42bit more skill throwing the ball and Castellano, but the way he
- 1:15:51he can maneuver and get out of stuff.
- 1:15:55He reminds me of him, how he moves in the all right.
- 1:16:00I'm going to throw this one up. I can't put him in this
- 1:16:03category. He's got some wiggle.
- 1:16:05He doesn't have Kyler wiggle. He does not have Kyler Murray's
- 1:16:07arm. He has a good arm.
- 1:16:10Kyler was a center fielder in baseball.
- 1:16:13You got to have an absolute rocket to play center field in
- 1:16:15baseball, and he has a rocket to be as small as he is.
- 1:16:19So, yeah, All right, real quick, before I got one more thing
- 1:16:22we're going to do, tell him we'll get it to you in a second
- 1:16:24because I know you got some shit to get off.
- 1:16:25You caused a ruckus on Twitter, making people all sorts of mad.
- 1:16:29Obviously national signing day is tomorrow.
- 1:16:32We have to commit earlier today. Portal seasons open.
- 1:16:35We've got 3 defensive lineman already there, probably more as
- 1:16:38we were sitting. We're going to come back next
- 1:16:40week and kind of unwrap that stuff because there's going to
- 1:16:42be probably more portal entries, maybe some other changes.
- 1:16:44So ain't no need to talk about it tonight.
- 1:16:47But Tally, the floor is yours because you go ahead and put it
- 1:16:52out now in spoken word. What you put in that tweet?
- 1:16:57No, SO most of the time for the season, of course everybody you
- 1:17:02got to have somebody that you got to put a blame on right.
- 1:17:06So I just like the debate. I'm not telling people that are
- 1:17:09wrong. I just want to hear what people
- 1:17:11say because I'm like y'all are telling me that Marv is the
- 1:17:16reason we lost all these games and I mean people was giving
- 1:17:18good stats. Well, we LED in this game.
- 1:17:20Well, we LED in this game. I'm like well, if you look at
- 1:17:22the games, it was more than just defensive let downs.
- 1:17:26Sure. Marvel wasn't adjusting well in
- 1:17:29the third quarter, I agree. But if I'm looking at it from a
- 1:17:36holistic standpoint, right, our top defensive player is, I mean,
- 1:17:44our top player that gets drafted is going to be a defensive
- 1:17:46player and we're going to have more defensive players drafted.
- 1:17:51Is that because they were developed well?
- 1:17:54Is that because of the scheme worked for them, You know what
- 1:17:58I'm saying? And then we had all these pieces
- 1:17:59come back on offense. You got everything you wanted on
- 1:18:02offense. You paid people big money.
- 1:18:05You got every piece back that you wanted maybe besides online,
- 1:18:10I guess they may or didn't get some online.
- 1:18:11But the pieces that we had you, you got them back.
- 1:18:14And we're still 6:00 and 6:00. So people say, well, you had
- 1:18:17this defensive, you had APR and you're still 66.
- 1:18:20I'm like, yeah, but the offense had as much talent, you know
- 1:18:23what I'm saying? I feel like it was more question
- 1:18:24marks on the defense then it was the offense at the beginning of
- 1:18:28the season and they said, well, people got hurt on the on the
- 1:18:31offense. Well, the starting safety got
- 1:18:33hurt in the first game, Stroman got hurt the first game.
- 1:18:37So it's you just I just don't understand how you pick one and
- 1:18:43not the other. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:18:46I'm picking the head man anyway. I'll just tell everybody that I
- 1:18:50feel like it's the head man's fault, the games that was that's
- 1:18:54my opinion. But if you just say somebody got
- 1:18:57to fall on the sword, I just want I was just wondering how
- 1:19:00people say it's Kyron's fault and it's Mars fault.
- 1:19:04So, Brian? What you think about it, I know
- 1:19:06you seen. The tweet that they was killing.
- 1:19:08Me, I I saw the tweet. They were killing you.
- 1:19:11If we talk about somebody got to fall on the sword and it's got
- 1:19:14to be somebody that's not Brent pride and not with Babcock,
- 1:19:17right. So we're, we're talking about
- 1:19:19somebody down the down the pecking order.
- 1:19:23I do lean Marv over Bowen and I'll give you my reasoning and
- 1:19:26most of it has to do with it. It's similar to to pride the,
- 1:19:31the things that Marv doesn't do well, regardless of game day, I
- 1:19:35think Marv doesn't do a great job of adjusting, especially in
- 1:19:39the third quarter. I think those game plans have
- 1:19:42been been pretty rough. I think that Bowen, even when
- 1:19:47things aren't working, he does adjust pretty well or is at
- 1:19:50least quicker to adjust to try something new in the game.
- 1:19:56But when I look at quarterback performance against linebacker
- 1:20:01performance, I think despite injuries and everything else, I
- 1:20:05think the quarterback still overall performed better
- 1:20:09individually at that position than the linebackers did
- 1:20:11collectively at their position. And then I look at the fact that
- 1:20:15Bowen can recruit and Marv can't.
- 1:20:18He, Marv is a minus recruiter, Bowen is a plus recruiter.
- 1:20:21So all that together, I think that puts Marv higher up on the
- 1:20:26on the chopping block then then then Bowen in my opinion.
- 1:20:31Show you go next. So I've, I've been a little,
- 1:20:37I've certainly been more critical of Marv this season
- 1:20:40just in terms of, you know, the, the Russian defense wasn't
- 1:20:44great. And when you isolate that, it's
- 1:20:45pretty clear the linebackers were a major, a major problem.
- 1:20:49Linebacker plays just wasn't good enough.
- 1:20:51Tech finished 62nd in Russian success rate, which you know, is
- 1:20:55not terrible, but again, with how much you returned and the
- 1:20:58fact that you had a full year to kind of revamp that linebacker
- 1:21:00room, it just isn't good enough. So, you know, I think the
- 1:21:04linebackers it it might be a bigger issue with recruiting
- 1:21:07than is with coaching, just because you look at a guy like
- 1:21:08Caleb Woodson, who was, you know, pretty much, I mean, one
- 1:21:11of the best performing guys in the entire room, arguably be
- 1:21:14best performing and he's a young guy.
- 1:21:16So, you know, there's there's some potential there, but I
- 1:21:20don't I don't think they manage that room correctly.
- 1:21:23And and that's mark custody, like that's he's got to own
- 1:21:25that. So I think, you know,
- 1:21:28metrically, you know, there's some nuance there because the
- 1:21:31defense did improve from last year and the offense, you know,
- 1:21:33kind of plateaued in some areas. But I also think the offense was
- 1:21:36dealing with, you know, a limited offensive line and
- 1:21:40injuries to key skill players, including the quarterbacks.
- 1:21:43So you kind of give going a little bit of the pass there.
- 1:21:45I just think I don't think the defense really maximized their
- 1:21:48potential. And I think the offense was a
- 1:21:50little bit closer to kind of doing, you know, as much as what
- 1:21:54they had. So I've been, I've been a little
- 1:21:56bit more critical of Marv this season.
- 1:21:59I like this because tally. Now I'll say this.
- 1:22:02Put up Robbie's. I'll throw this in too.
- 1:22:04Yeah, Robbie, thank you. That's my what?
- 1:22:06But I'll say this to him. Y'all.
- 1:22:07Excuse me, I'm eating some presses.
- 1:22:09You fine. Another thing that kind of threw
- 1:22:12me for a loop is like, OK, if we won, we won six games, right?
- 1:22:17So if we won eight games, if we won eight games and we lost
- 1:22:22four, we would probably be here in a lot different position and
- 1:22:27feel different, especially if those wins came against Miami
- 1:22:32and Duke. Yep.
- 1:22:34Your defense gave you, if I'm not mistaken, I know they gave
- 1:22:36you 4 turnovers against Duke because people say, well you
- 1:22:41know, we scored this many points.
- 1:22:42I'm like it's OK if you score 35, but what if you can score
- 1:22:4650? Like you got to take the layup
- 1:22:50points we we had. I know we got 4 turnovers and
- 1:22:54won the turnover battle against Duke.
- 1:22:56Still lost. We won the turnover battle
- 1:22:59against Miami. We won the turnover battle
- 1:23:01against Miami and I can't remember how many we had.
- 1:23:05We may have had three today, like one.
- 1:23:08But whatever the case is, I know we won the turnover battle there
- 1:23:11and we still lose. So it's like is the defense
- 1:23:14doing enough for us to win? Or is it like it's just to me, I
- 1:23:18feel like the defense and the offense never was on the same
- 1:23:21page. One would give us some stuff the
- 1:23:24other wouldn't. And then I feel like a lot of
- 1:23:27times again, I ain't trying to go down the rabbit hole with it,
- 1:23:29but this is just my thinking when I'm everything's done and I
- 1:23:33got time to analyze. We mismanaged injuries 100% and
- 1:23:39I wasn't in, I wasn't in the locker room, but I could on the
- 1:23:43outside looking in. We mismanaged injuries on both
- 1:23:45sides and we are where we are. So who does that fall on?
- 1:23:51Like I just feel like everybody was quick to say it's Marv, it's
- 1:23:55Marv, it's Marv. And then what Robbie said made
- 1:23:57the most sense to me. Like y'all told me that Pride is
- 1:24:01a not y'all, but the world says Pride's a defensive guru, right?
- 1:24:05So if my defensive guy is having a problem because he's a young
- 1:24:09coach and this is the first time coordinator he's having a
- 1:24:13problem, you mean to tell me you couldn't step in and show us
- 1:24:17some things that's going to help the defense or hell, Bud Foster
- 1:24:22walking around, We can't ask him to come in and run some kind of
- 1:24:25something to help. Like, I just feel like it's some
- 1:24:29things the head coach should do, could do to help the defense
- 1:24:32more than if there is a great offensive coordinator out there
- 1:24:38and proud of the defensive coach.
- 1:24:40I feel like we would we would benefit more from having a great
- 1:24:45offensive coordinator. That's just my opinion.
- 1:24:48Now, Curtis, I know you have some stuff that you want to go
- 1:24:50with what you got. You're on mute too.
- 1:24:54Get off mute first. Microphone, the microphone
- 1:24:56lights undone. This is what all of the point
- 1:24:59you're making is. There were times this year where
- 1:25:02the defense would like that. Opposite way is where there were
- 1:25:06times the offense just scored and scored.
- 1:25:10It would be like another score. Syracuse.
- 1:25:12In the Syracuse game, offense still put up, what, 31 was that,
- 1:25:19right, 31. I had to score for your second.
- 1:25:22I got 31, 31, right? Yeah.
- 1:25:26The offense put up 31 in that game and the defense played a
- 1:25:31great first half and then they just fell.
- 1:25:34It was never. And Price said it and he said it
- 1:25:37and he tried saying this is what his preaching thing is,
- 1:25:39complimentary football. We had very little complimentary
- 1:25:44football this year. We had very little score,
- 1:25:47touchdown, make a stop, go, put a field goal up, make a stop,
- 1:25:53pin them deep. We didn't have that.
- 1:25:56We didn't have any complimentary football all year.
- 1:25:58That's why we're six and six now to this point.
- 1:26:02Robbie does make a good point. If Marv isn't doing well in your
- 1:26:05former head coaches of DC, he should be getting in that room.
- 1:26:10How much does he go into that room is the question.
- 1:26:14And what we said, he go into that room, where do we see it
- 1:26:17more? But I'm like this, I'm like, I
- 1:26:21think both need to go because even though I like Tyler Bone as
- 1:26:25a recruiter and there are times where he's sitting at the
- 1:26:28blackjack table and he can't do no wrong, then there's times he
- 1:26:31does it and he busts every single hand in a row where he
- 1:26:34cannot put up anything. So, oh, there you go.
- 1:26:40That is a good question. Has anybody asked?
- 1:26:43Does he stand with it still goes back on pry here for the same
- 1:26:47reason Robbie brought up there, because if it prize in the
- 1:26:51defense that much and we're still having inconsistencies,
- 1:26:53then you know that that's still a reflection there.
- 1:26:58It's a it's a reflection on Pry. Now, if he did do that, that's
- 1:27:03probably why Marv's going to get the hook.
- 1:27:06But I've said this, and I said it after the Syracuse game, and
- 1:27:09I'm going to continue to say it. Things have to be changed.
- 1:27:13We are were multiple games under 500 in the whole 10 year the
- 1:27:17last two years because I give the free pass to the first year.
- 1:27:20It probably was the single worst P5 roster in the country.
- 1:27:25Think about that. The last, the only argument you
- 1:27:28can say is did did we do enough to try to flip it year one?
- 1:27:31But as far as? What that What?
- 1:27:33We did with the talent we had, that's you're not going to get
- 1:27:37much better than. But that was a cultural
- 1:27:39decision. That was a cultural decision
- 1:27:42that was basically, and we'll give everybody an opportunity
- 1:27:44that's already here and put them on there.
- 1:27:47The thing that needs to happen is you've got to change things
- 1:27:50in this staff. Inexperienced top to bottom is
- 1:27:52the killer. Yep, you've got to go find some
- 1:27:54old heads. And I don't care if it's a
- 1:27:56defensive coordinator, if it's an offensive assistant, if it's
- 1:27:59an offensive coordinator, you've got to change the dynamic in
- 1:28:02those rooms. You've got to put an old head
- 1:28:05that when somebody does some stupid, I mean, we all work with
- 1:28:07these people at some point in time in our life.
- 1:28:09They're older and you say something dumb and they just
- 1:28:11tell you straight up like that's stupid.
- 1:28:14Like don't, don't do that again. Now, some might do it in more
- 1:28:17gentler ways, but they need somebody in there smacking in
- 1:28:20the back of the head, right? Like, no, we ain't doing that.
- 1:28:22Why are you going to why are you going to run a cover 2 versus
- 1:28:25this? They're going to eat it up all
- 1:28:26day or why aren't you going to put a spy on the quarterback
- 1:28:30that can run? That was the only.
- 1:28:33One, he's the only one running. He's.
- 1:28:35The only one doing anything. He was the only one doing
- 1:28:38anything Saturday night and it took us 3 1/2 quarters to stop
- 1:28:42it. That is I can't deal with that.
- 1:28:46I can deal with the quarter. I can deal with the broken
- 1:28:48plate, can't deal with the consistencies like that.
- 1:28:52The question now goes, as we kind of start wrapping it up
- 1:28:56here tonight is when are we going to see the changes?
- 1:28:59We're seeing the portal. They're they're doing the big
- 1:29:03signing day thing tomorrow starting at like 7:00, which I
- 1:29:10think we're going. I don't think there's going to
- 1:29:11be any flips. I don't think I think we're
- 1:29:12going to sign everybody. But I think I said to I can't
- 1:29:16remember. I texted all y'all this or you
- 1:29:18this or put this somewhere. There's going to be pissed off
- 1:29:21people when they see all the coaches in the room glad hand
- 1:29:24and making announcements tomorrow because people going to
- 1:29:26be like all these other schools right now are letting people go.
- 1:29:29Josh Caddis got kicked to the curb today.
- 1:29:31Guy who was a quarterback coach for JJ McCarthy got kicked to
- 1:29:34the curb today. Plus, Miles on left, Jamie
- 1:29:37Chadwell's leaving, movements happening.
- 1:29:39We're just sitting here, oh, we're all good, everybody,
- 1:29:42everything's good. No, everything ain't good.
- 1:29:45You're an average football team with an above average roster
- 1:29:48this year and you epically failed.
- 1:29:54OK, so I have some some nuanced thoughts about this.
- 1:29:58So you talk about you talk about the assistance.
- 1:30:01Look, I do agree that you know, you have to make staff changes
- 1:30:03because I mean like there's no choice like you win six and six
- 1:30:06make staff changes. But I probably I probably learn
- 1:30:11more towards the tally way of looking at this because I think
- 1:30:14when you look at the overall body of work, there's just
- 1:30:17nothing that this team is really bad at, but nothing that they're
- 1:30:20also great at. And so I think you can make a
- 1:30:23case for keeping, you know, this assistant of that.
- 1:30:26But the ultimate problem is that you have a head coach who's 1
- 1:30:29and 12 and one score games and finds a way to lose and finds a
- 1:30:34way to snatch snatch defeat from the jaws of victory every single
- 1:30:38week. I just don't know that the the
- 1:30:41performance of the coordinators has been bad enough to justify
- 1:30:44an immediate like, you know, a reactionary decision.
- 1:30:48But it's like, it's just this weird situation where like the
- 1:30:52the play on the field exceeds the win loss record, but
- 1:30:55everybody wants to fire the assistants.
- 1:30:57But the main problem seems to be the head coach.
- 1:31:00I just, I think it's a weird, I just think it's a weird dynamic.
- 1:31:03So let me let me let me go here so.
- 1:31:05First of all, no, Brian, because I know you were doing that
- 1:31:07listening. So I think the problem that
- 1:31:10we're in is we're in a situation where from a buyout standpoint,
- 1:31:17it prize the problem. We can't move on from pry right
- 1:31:20now so that that we're starting at square 1.
- 1:31:24So, so if, if, if that's where we're starting at, then do we
- 1:31:30ride with what Sheldon's saying and like, OK, well, they they
- 1:31:33haven't been good, but they haven't been bad enough to to
- 1:31:36fire them. What's the middle ground here?
- 1:31:39Is the middle ground, bringing in a analyst some sort of
- 1:31:45experience, seasoned game management analysts that can
- 1:31:52work with pride to season some of these problems that we've had
- 1:31:58throughout the year in terms of game management, in terms of
- 1:32:04crucial decision making in those those key moments in the game?
- 1:32:08Because I mean, we talked about it, those those are probably
- 1:32:11cost us at least two, maybe three wins this year, right?
- 1:32:13It when we look at the, the cumulative effect, you know,
- 1:32:17this could easily be an 8 or 9 win team if a handful of
- 1:32:22decisions are made better on game day.
- 1:32:25So when we look at that, it is is the answer Stan and Pat and
- 1:32:31bringing in an analyst like that because you're not in a position
- 1:32:34right now to to scrap it again and start from scratch.
- 1:32:39That's a good question. Great question.
- 1:32:41And that's the thing I don't again, I'm not the one that's
- 1:32:45out here beating the drums saying fire pry, but I just know
- 1:32:50that I don't feel like Fire and Marv is going to make us win
- 1:32:54more games next year or the next year.
- 1:32:57You know, I don't I don't I can't definitively say that
- 1:33:00because Pryor is still the head coach.
- 1:33:03He is the one that's losing. He's the one like again.
- 1:33:07And Brian, I know you want to go, so don't forget what you're
- 1:33:09going to say, what you what you think about saying.
- 1:33:11But it's like if we do bring in a new coordinator, of course,
- 1:33:16Oh, he's got to learn a system that's going to set us how many
- 1:33:18years back and it's going to do this and it's we're still making
- 1:33:22the same mistakes. Who?
- 1:33:24And it's a long list of things that went wrong, but who leaves
- 1:33:29the quarterback in when his foot is broke?
- 1:33:33Who makes that decision? Whose decision was it to not
- 1:33:36play Caleb Woodson? Well, whose decision was it to
- 1:33:40not play Caleb Woodson early in the season?
- 1:33:46Whose decision was it to not get Q Reddish on the field earlier?
- 1:33:52You know, just little things like that.
- 1:33:53Like I don't know who it is. I don't know if it's the
- 1:33:56defensive coordinator, I don't know if it's the head coach, I
- 1:33:58don't know if it's the position coaches.
- 1:34:00I don't know, man. Like it's just a lot to think
- 1:34:02about. And again, I don't want people
- 1:34:04to thank anybody who's here listening, who interacts with me
- 1:34:08on Twitter. Like I'm not argumentative.
- 1:34:11I like to have discussions. So I genuinely was asking like I
- 1:34:16see this happening. I just want to know what do
- 1:34:19y'all think and why do you think that Brian, what was you going
- 1:34:22to say? Oh Curtis, you got some.
- 1:34:24You was going. Brian, Brian, I got mine.
- 1:34:26I'll let you. I'll let you go first.
- 1:34:27Man, so I'm I'm with Brian, you have to make some change and
- 1:34:30Shelton, you have to make some change.
- 1:34:31If you don't do an overhaul, that's fine.
- 1:34:34But this is what you do. You do 3 positions.
- 1:34:36The first one is Brian, your point?
- 1:34:39You've been, you've been, you've been beating a hammer.
- 1:34:41Like if you're not going to make many changes, give him a Jerry
- 1:34:44Kill type figure to help manage the games, make decisions, all
- 1:34:48that crap. I'm good for that.
- 1:34:51I think what you do on both sides of the ball, if you feel
- 1:34:54to Tally's point and Deshaun's point, we aren't terrible
- 1:34:59anywhere. It really is true.
- 1:35:00We're not terrible anywhere now. We're terrible at times, we're
- 1:35:04awful at times doing stuff. You bring seasons we're rarely
- 1:35:08consistently bad at. Anything.
- 1:35:10Exactly. Bring in that older voice.
- 1:35:14It's basically let 1 member of the staff on each side go bring
- 1:35:18in the older voice who has the experience.
- 1:35:20You don't have to name an offensive or defensive
- 1:35:22coordinator, but you come in and say, listen, your job is to
- 1:35:27improve this person. Your job is to improve this
- 1:35:30person. Like, you know, the name's been
- 1:35:33floated out there a lot. I love Pearson.
- 1:35:36Prelude to death. A lot of people know Pearson
- 1:35:38didn't want that coaching job. Let him go back to director,
- 1:35:41player personnel, bring in Bob Chute because one Bob Chute
- 1:35:44knows the systems. Bob been a safety coach for a
- 1:35:47long time. There ain't no learning curve.
- 1:35:49He's like 5758 years old. He may not help you on the
- 1:35:52trail, but The thing is, if you believe in Chris Marr, if you
- 1:35:56believe in Chris Marr can be a good defensive coordinator.
- 1:36:00Get an old head in that room with him consistently and
- 1:36:03constantly. Other side, same way, bring
- 1:36:06somebody in, let go of Stu Holt, Ron Crooks.
- 1:36:12What was one of those two guys? Bring in somebody who's seasons,
- 1:36:15it's called plays. It can get you out of the ruts
- 1:36:17because with Tyler, it's never about when he's not on.
- 1:36:20It's when he's off. It's so bad.
- 1:36:23It's so bad. So let me let me throw this out
- 1:36:26there. You know, we talked about a
- 1:36:29Jerry Kill type, but I mean, what this staff is lacking,
- 1:36:36regardless of what position they are, whether coordinator,
- 1:36:39position coach, head coach, this staff does not have a lot of
- 1:36:44head coaching experience on it. One guy and and that doesn't
- 1:36:51really count, at least not at least not in a in, in, in, in
- 1:36:56the in the meaningful way that we're we're looking at here.
- 1:36:58So and and that was a very short tenure as well, correct.
- 1:37:04So when we look at that, you know, do you do you two birds
- 1:37:10with one stone? You get a former head coach.
- 1:37:13That's fine. Being a coordinator that has
- 1:37:15that experience. Is that a, is that a half step
- 1:37:20where you're still spending the same amount of money and not
- 1:37:22having to hire a new coordinator and a Jerry Kill type?
- 1:37:26Whether you have the budget for that or not, I don't know.
- 1:37:30I'm, I'm, I'm wondering if a, somebody with that type of
- 1:37:34seasoning that's willing to be a coordinator underneath a, a
- 1:37:39Brent Pry could, could rub off on him and be kind of that kind
- 1:37:44of that right hand man from a game management perspective,
- 1:37:49regardless of whether they're running the defense or running a
- 1:37:51position group or whatever, whatever it may be.
- 1:37:54Because I think, you know, I think the biggest problem is
- 1:37:56that just this staff top to bottom lacks experience of
- 1:38:00managing games because you've got fresh coordinators and a
- 1:38:05head coach that never did it till he got here.
- 1:38:08It's true. It's true.
- 1:38:09I think all of us here, Sheldon, anything you want to add
- 1:38:11additional as we get ready to wrap this thing up in the
- 1:38:13higher? Mac?
- 1:38:14Listen, Mac Brown doesn't know how to manage a game better than
- 1:38:17Brett Brown. I'll say that.
- 1:38:18So Sean, anything you want to. Yeah.
- 1:38:21I mean, I certainly think you could, you know, maybe consider
- 1:38:23adding some consultants or analysts and that'd be fine.
- 1:38:26But I just think when I, when I look at the data, I'm not seeing
- 1:38:31the the justifications for significant staff turnover.
- 1:38:35If, if the team had performed up to their expectations, win loss
- 1:38:39record wise, like if if the staff had, you know, not bungled
- 1:38:43a bunch of games that we were seeing here, 8 and four, maybe
- 1:38:44nine and three. I think we'd all, yeah, we'd all
- 1:38:47be happy. And the stats would be the exact
- 1:38:49same. The data, the metrics would all
- 1:38:50be the exact same. But we're nine and three.
- 1:38:53So we're thinking, hey, man, it's all good.
- 1:38:54Let's keep it rolling it. May not have hit the the heights
- 1:38:57we expected, but it's at least kind of the incremental steps.
- 1:39:00It's the expectation, you know, levelling out at least.
- 1:39:03Yeah. And then the final thing is, you
- 1:39:05know, I think text coordinators are paid probably around the 35
- 1:39:08to 40 range in Power 5, some in the ballpark.
- 1:39:11And I think you got to wonder like if you did decide to move
- 1:39:14on, you know, could you make a, could you make a legitimate
- 1:39:17upgrade with that salary range? I just maybe you could I just I
- 1:39:20don't, I don't know. And it is.
- 1:39:23Yeah. And it is risky, you know,
- 1:39:25always making those changes because you just don't know.
- 1:39:26Maybe it turns out to be worse or or it's a downgrade.
- 1:39:29So I don't know. Anything else, gentlemen, before
- 1:39:33we put a wrap on this, I think anything tally Brian?
- 1:39:38Nope all. Right back up the brinks to
- 1:39:40Jerry Kill and let's see what we can do.
- 1:39:43I think it's just this, I think we all need to see changes
- 1:39:47happen. And I think Shelton, to your
- 1:39:49point, because of the way you look at the metrics is if we
- 1:39:51went on through, you'd all be happy.
- 1:39:53Maybe 6 and 6 was the best thing to happen to basically show this
- 1:39:57staff is not going to be the staff that gets us where we want
- 1:39:59to be. That's all I'll say.
- 1:40:02Now with that being said, that does wrap up this episode of the
