Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions. Possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking and just bring some joy into the world.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey everybody, good afternoon.
- 0:30We're not in the chicken coop right now.
- 0:32We are out watering and it is late afternoon and I'm doing the
- 0:37podcast now because it is just too damn hot and the girls are
- 0:42out. You'll hear the Roosters in the
- 0:43background, everyone's free ranging and there you go.
- 0:47There's Rufus and I am currently hand watering plants to make
- 0:52sure everybody's doing OK and all of this heat.
- 0:55So I figured, well, while I'm out here, it would be a great
- 0:58time to do the podcast, even though it's way late for today,
- 1:01which I apologize for. But when the heat is on, we have
- 1:05to change things up. So we're talking about a
- 1:08pleasing personality. Sounds so wonderful, doesn't it?
- 1:12Well, this whole thing came up because we were talking about, I
- 1:16was talking with a client and we were talking about how she was
- 1:19looking to hire someone who had a pleasing personality and how
- 1:24she was discouraged because she was not finding people with
- 1:27pleasing personalities. So when I asked her to define
- 1:31that for me, she kind of was like, well, what do you mean,
- 1:33you know, like a pleasing personality?
- 1:35And I said, well, I actually, I, I have my idea of what that
- 1:38means, but I need you to be very specific about it.
- 1:41So she started to put down on paper what her idea of a
- 1:44pleasing personality was. And as we we're going through it
- 1:48all, it was quite evident that what she was looking for was
- 1:53probably not going to be available to her in the price
- 1:58that she was paying. So she was, you know, looking
- 2:02for someone to manage a coffee shop.
- 2:05And this was something that's, and in my opinion, it's an
- 2:08important job when you're the manager because you're setting
- 2:11the tone, you're doing a lot of things.
- 2:13And while she was offering a decent salary, the list of what
- 2:18she was looking for was like off the chart.
- 2:21Now, I had just run into this with jobs that, you know, we
- 2:25were talking about for one of my other clients child.
- 2:28And she's like, I look this up and like he wants to be a, like
- 2:32a, a nature police officer, which here where we are, it
- 2:37would be a Department of Resources officer.
- 2:40And they require a degree, they require all these other
- 2:44certifications to do it. And they're offering a salary
- 2:48that's in the mid 50s. And you just look at a person
- 2:51who's put that much into their education is going to look at
- 2:55this and be like, this is not ideal for me.
- 2:58And so it's something that you keep running into like they
- 3:01can't get qualified people. And a lot of times they're, you
- 3:04know, you hear this, I can't get qualified people.
- 3:06I can't get qualified people. But can you not get qualified
- 3:09people because your expectation of the job is and who you want
- 3:14them to be is not in line with what you're willing to pay.
- 3:18And, and her pleasing personality was more than just a
- 3:21pleasing personality of being sweet and kind.
- 3:25It was the demands of the job were high for the personality
- 3:30piece. So it got me thinking about,
- 3:32well, how, how, where else does this show up for us?
- 3:35And where do we have to define what this looks like so that we
- 3:38understand what we're asking for So that we can really make sure
- 3:43we're not doing something to hinder our own progress by
- 3:46putting something out there that is just essentially not going to
- 3:50happen the way we wish it would happen.
- 3:52So have you ever considered it? Have you ever thought about it?
- 3:56How would you define a pleasing personality?
- 3:58How would you define aspects of who you're looking for in your
- 4:01job? Like something that's incredibly
- 4:03important to me, besides someone just being kind is that when I
- 4:07bring somebody to work with me, work on my team, work with me in
- 4:11some way, I'm always looking for how do they respond?
- 4:14Like are they slow in responding?
- 4:16Do they show up late? If there is one thing that makes
- 4:19me crazy, it's that someone shows up late in that part of my
- 4:24world. Now, if my clients are late,
- 4:26that's on them because quite frankly, they're paying for my
- 4:29time and they're paying me whether they're late or not.
- 4:32And I just don't get upset about it because things happen.
- 4:35But when I show up, I'm going to show up on time.
- 4:38And I think anybody that works with me knows that like I don't
- 4:41miss sessions and I like I'm always there, super consistent.
- 4:48If I have an appointment, I am on time.
- 4:50And I think for me, it's one of the biggest things that I really
- 4:55focus on is I want to know if I'm working with someone, do you
- 4:59show up on time? And if you don't, that's going
- 5:02to create a huge issue for me. I can already promise you that I
- 5:06do not like waiting and time is valuable.
- 5:09It's a precious resource and for us to be able to have it is a
- 5:14gift and I don't like to waste it.
- 5:16So I will make sure that I am consistent with my timing.
- 5:20A lot of people don't think of it that way and it's a sore
- 5:24spot. So you have to think about what
- 5:27does, what are your rules around this?
- 5:29Like what is a pleasing personality?
- 5:31And I'm using this as an example, but we could use this
- 5:33for any question. When you're looking for someone,
- 5:36when you're defining things, please make sure you understand
- 5:39how you define it because it's going to make all the
- 5:40difference. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:43you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:45Bye.
