- 0:12Hey everybody, welcome back to Eggs the podcast.
- 0:14Today's special guest is speaker, best selling author and
- 0:17founder of the multi $1,000,000 global consulting company, Life
- 0:20is now David Nagle. David, welcome to the show.
- 0:21How are you? Thanks for having me, Ryan.
- 0:23Thanks for having me, Mike. How are you?
- 0:26Yeah, thrilled to death to have you.
- 0:28Well, for people who maybe don't know where to begin with the the
- 0:31David Nagel story, maybe we should talk about your early
- 0:34beginnings and sort of maybe the big pivotal moment that led you
- 0:36down the path that you're on today.
- 0:39Yeah, the big pivotal moment was I was a high school dropout,
- 0:44lost everything, the car repossessed, bankrupt, the whole
- 0:47thing. The only skill I had was to
- 0:49either drive a truck or drive a forklift, right.
- 0:52So I was working in a warehouse, manual labor.
- 0:54We had to leave our apartment building in the middle of the
- 0:56night because I I went in good faith.
- 0:59I went to the owners of the building and I said, listen,
- 1:02I've had a financial hardship. I can't pay the rent.
- 1:05Would you let me out of the lease?
- 1:07And I thought they were going to.
- 1:08And he just looked at me across the desk and said no way.
- 1:12And I was like, OK, so that led to me getting a truck in the
- 1:15middle of the night. And book in and out of there
- 1:18like 60 miles. And we had to live in a bad
- 1:20neighborhood for a couple years. So I was working in this
- 1:25warehouse and everything was just getting worse.
- 1:27Now my mind was focused on the idea.
- 1:30Somehow I came up with this idea that if I could just raise my
- 1:34income enough, I could go back to school, which would be a
- 1:37brick and mortar school, by the way.
- 1:39Like there's no Internet back then.
- 1:40And but I didn't have the time and the and the money to do it.
- 1:43I was working 6 1/2 days a week. I had no extra money.
- 1:47We were on food stamps and I had no extra time.
- 1:50So my mind doesn't switch off on this problem, it stays on the
- 1:54problem. I need to find a way to make
- 1:56more money. For two years I tried everything
- 1:59that I could. Nothing worked.
- 2:01Absolutely nothing. So I go into work one day, and
- 2:06this is after months of just being like completely beat down.
- 2:09Every time I go home, I'm almost in tears because I'm so
- 2:12humiliated by where we're living, you know, as as a
- 2:15family. I get to work and I got written
- 2:18up in discipline twice before I even started my shift that day.
- 2:22So I was just furious. I was, I'm screaming at the boss
- 2:27like, like, they're the problem, right?
- 2:28That's where my mind was, like they're the problem.
- 2:31Literally screaming at this guy. So I go to work.
- 2:34I don't know how I don't get, didn't get fired, but I, I get
- 2:37in there and I'm working. Everything's going wrong.
- 2:40My partner at work didn't show up to help me work on the dock
- 2:43stuff swollen over. My attitude is absolutely
- 2:47terrible. At about 2:00 in the morning,
- 2:49it's freezing cold out to 2:00 in the morning.
- 2:52I'm pulling into this truck with a whole load of food that's
- 2:55stacked on a pallet and the thing just tips over as I'm
- 2:58putting it down all over the place and I just started crying.
- 3:02It was like, that was it. I just hit like rock bottom at
- 3:05that point and I'm sitting there bawling my eyes out and I'm
- 3:08going, God, please show me something.
- 3:10I can't do this anymore and I don't know what to do.
- 3:13Nothing's working and on my kids.
- 3:17A voice said to me, David, change your attitude.
- 3:20That's all I heard and it was audible like I could hear it.
- 3:24And I'm looking around the trailer and and it it's so
- 3:26pulled me out of what I was experiencing.
- 3:31I gained my composure. I went over there, I started
- 3:34stacking stuff up and I'm, I'm thinking about what did I just
- 3:38hear? What does this mean?
- 3:39And I realized that I have been hearing this ever since I was a
- 3:43little kid because I was a terrible student in school.
- 3:46And the teachers would call my father in and then my, and they
- 3:50would say to him, David's a pretty bright guy.
- 3:51If he would just change his attitude about his work, he
- 3:53could be a good student. So I would go home and my father
- 3:58would yell at me and then say, go to your room.
- 4:01I'm taking all your privileges away until your next report
- 4:04card, weekends included. And but nobody ever said, let me
- 4:08show you how to study. Let me see if there's a learning
- 4:10discipline disability there, something that never happened.
- 4:14So this was my whole childhood until my parents got divorced
- 4:19when I was 13. And then basically nobody was
- 4:21around. So it was just me and my brother
- 4:23kind of raising our self at that point.
- 4:26So I said, what is this attitude thing?
- 4:28The guy that that I worked for that owned this company was the
- 4:31largest food importer in the United States.
- 4:35And his story was legendary in the company because he started
- 4:39it in his garage in a suburb of Chicago, built it up from
- 4:43nothing into, you know, like the largest food importer in the
- 4:46United States. And I thought, what is the
- 4:48difference between his attitude and mine?
- 4:51And I recognize three things immediately. 1.
- 4:54He must have loved what he did because he stuck with it till he
- 4:57had this success #2 He must have done a really great job at what
- 5:01he was doing. And #3 one of the things that I
- 5:04noticed that stood out to me was that as this guy would walk
- 5:07through the warehouse, we had one of the very first in the
- 5:1080s, but we had one of the very first automated warehouses in
- 5:14the area, partially automated. It was like this whole new
- 5:16thing. So they were always walking CE
- 5:19OS through the building. They're all in their suits,
- 5:21right? And they're coming through.
- 5:23They're coming through the warehouse.
- 5:24Like 80% of the warehouse doesn't even speak English, but
- 5:27the owner would never walk past an employee without saying, hey,
- 5:31how you doing? Patting him on the back, how's
- 5:33the family? Anything I could do for you?
- 5:35I don't care how many people he had with him.
- 5:37And for some reason, I used to notice this and I recognized
- 5:40later because I grew up in an environment where they hated the
- 5:43people that they work for. They were always saying you're
- 5:46just a number, nobody cares about you, you know, all that
- 5:49kind of stuff. I recognize this person was
- 5:52different in some way. So I said I'm going to change
- 5:55three things. I'm going to act like I love
- 5:57what I do, I'm going to do every job to the best of my ability
- 6:02and I'm going to start treating people with total respect.
- 6:05Now in my parents defense, they did not raise me to be
- 6:07disrespectful, but because I had no skills in anything as I was
- 6:13going down in life, it would I was taking it out on other
- 6:16people unfortunately. But anyway, I said I was going
- 6:18to change those those three things and I said I'm going to
- 6:20do it for a year and see if it makes any difference whatsoever.
- 6:2430 days later, my income tripled because I made these changes.
- 6:28It tripled. It went from 20,000 a year to
- 6:3062,000 a year. And it, it just blew my mind
- 6:34that this happened and it put me on a road to study because I
- 6:37wanted to find out how is this even possible because I was in
- 6:41no way in any position for no, for no reason should my income
- 6:45go to 62. I didn't, nobody in my family
- 6:48even made 62,000 a year back then.
- 6:51And here I was to make this quantum leap and I can't figure
- 6:53out how the hell I do it. So I started studying.
- 6:55I mean, I don't want to get long winded on it.
- 6:57I'll tell you as much as you want, but I started studying
- 7:00everything I can get my hands on.
- 7:01I turned my car, I got rid, I got rid of the cassette tapes in
- 7:05my car and I started getting tapes, books on tape,
- 7:08biographies on tape. I got Tony Robbins personal
- 7:10power on tape, which that's a really interesting story.
- 7:15And I had to drive 100 miles one way to work and 100 miles home.
- 7:19So this became my study period. And I did that for seven years
- 7:23and then I started my own business.
- 7:25Wow, yeah, you're time on the road.
- 7:27Sounds like our friend Mike here.
- 7:28He's commuting between Sun Valley, ID and Chelan, WA most
- 7:32nights or most weekends for weddings and things like that,
- 7:34That he works and stuff. How far?
- 7:36Is that it's, it's a 12 hour drive.
- 7:39It's a bummer. Yeah.
- 7:40I, I, as you were saying that I'm like, I, I had a very
- 7:43similar kind of switch from music to hey, here's a podcast,
- 7:48here's an audio book. Here's something that's going to
- 7:50edify and help me learn instead of just waste the time listening
- 7:54to the latest greatest. Whatever.
- 7:57Yeah, right. So right.
- 7:58Exactly. Yeah.
- 7:59So based on your on your story there, and there's some more
- 8:03color around the story being sucked through dams and all
- 8:06kinds of things. But to keep things sort of
- 8:07business focused for the moment, I want to talk about faith
- 8:10versus belief. I think a lot of people read
- 8:12these types of books, you know, the millions within included,
- 8:14but also the the classics, you know, the, the think and grow
- 8:18riches and these types of books. And, and I think one of the
- 8:22things that happens is there's a lot of well-intentioned
- 8:24information about mindset and belief and getting yourself
- 8:27right. And to be clear, I believe all
- 8:29these things are true, but I wondered if you wouldn't talk a
- 8:32little bit about just sort of the difference between faith and
- 8:34belief. And, and what I mean is that it
- 8:36seems to me that faith for people, especially if they have
- 8:39maybe a religious tradition or something like that, faith could
- 8:42be something that you don't even think about, right?
- 8:43It's just implicitly true. It's built in.
- 8:45There's no two ways about it. But to frame it in the realm of
- 8:49the millions within and the type of actions and activities that
- 8:52you talk about in your own life, setting your mind to something
- 8:55or believing that something is possible is really kind of the
- 8:57key to everything else. Like nothing else can happen
- 9:00without belief. And so I wondered if you'd talk
- 9:02a little bit about belief just as being AI guess something
- 9:05active, you know, something that we're we're proactively getting
- 9:08involved with versus just having a faith that things will be
- 9:11there for us. Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:14So when it comes to belief, we have to understand something.
- 9:17Just because we agree on something doesn't mean that I
- 9:20believe it. It means I have an intellectual
- 9:22understanding of it. I might believe in your belief,
- 9:25I might agree with your belief, but it doesn't mean that I
- 9:27actually believe it. Because when I was when I was
- 9:30studying, I was also studying religions.
- 9:33Now, I was raised Catholic, but I was not all that impressed
- 9:36with the education that I got from the, the Catholic religion.
- 9:40But I would read in the Bible and it would say if you could
- 9:43believe, basically you could do anything.
- 9:46Like, it's mentioned so many times, and I thought, I believe
- 9:49I've always believed something different, but that's not what
- 9:52showed up in my life. What is the difference in the
- 9:56word? So I then started looking at
- 9:59books that were written, you know, in the day, in the 90s or
- 10:02whatever. And the way they used belief was
- 10:06more of an agreeable thing. Like, I believe this.
- 10:09You could tell me something that I have no experience with, and I
- 10:12could go, I believe that. Yeah, I believe that's true,
- 10:14Right? But that's not really a belief.
- 10:17A belief is when energetically you've got it in your thinking,
- 10:21your emotions and in your physical actions.
- 10:24They're all in integrity with each other and you're not
- 10:28fighting it everyday, right? So I might say I'm going to be
- 10:31successful. I have to get up and I have to
- 10:33make sales calls in the morning and I get up and I'm thinking,
- 10:36oh man, I really don't want to make sales calls.
- 10:38So they just don't feel like it. If you've got a real belief,
- 10:42you're going to get up and you're going to do it.
- 10:43You're not going to have that battle in your mind, and that
- 10:46belief doesn't waver, no matter how difficult it gets.
- 10:50Does that make sense? Yeah, I think it makes sense and
- 10:53I think it maybe leads me into kind of where I wanted to go
- 10:55with this, which is a stickiness component, right?
- 10:58I think it's easy to have belief, like you say, it's easy
- 11:00to agree in something. And I'll just use my own
- 11:02anecdote. When I read think and Grow rich,
- 11:04I, I stuck a piece of paper on my wall with my mantra, you
- 11:07know, that Napoleon told me I had to put together that this
- 11:10was my income goal and this was my business goal.
- 11:12And I tried to, you know, and I, I came into the, the office
- 11:15every morning and I, I read my little piece of paper, you know,
- 11:18tried to commit that thing. Well, Needless to say, I'm still
- 11:20not a multimillionaire. I'm still not doing the things I
- 11:22should have been. You know, the, all the things on
- 11:24that paper did not work out. And so to your point about
- 11:26having sort of this internal alignment, I think for me, I had
- 11:30written down this stuff and therefore I believed it.
- 11:33Yeah. But but I think that there was
- 11:35still of this component that maybe I was leaning too into the
- 11:38woo woo and not enough into the, you know, just because you're
- 11:41saying this out loud doesn't mean that you're actually doing
- 11:44anything. Well, I don't think that it's a
- 11:46person's leaning too into the woo woo.
- 11:47I don't think they understand how the woo woo works.
- 11:51So the idea is that if you believe something, if you said
- 11:53an intention, the universe is going to respond to that all the
- 11:57time. Your then participation is to
- 12:00recognize that response and then take action on it immediately.
- 12:04And it goes back and forth like that to the to the achievement
- 12:07of whatever goal that you want. The faith part is interesting
- 12:11because right there's a really great book on faith.
- 12:13It's called God works through Faith by Robert Russell.
- 12:16If you don't have it, you should get it and read it.
- 12:18I really think you'd like it, but they use Christian
- 12:21principles in that book to point out, number one, God's already
- 12:26created everything. It's already done, it's already
- 12:28here. That's a promise to God, to
- 12:30human beings #2 you have to act with that belief, with faith,
- 12:37that whatever it is you're going to do is going to show up.
- 12:40Like if I give me, for instance, with money, because I work with
- 12:43people on this all the time, all the money is already here,
- 12:47right? But most people say I can't do
- 12:50things because I can't afford them.
- 12:52So they have the problem. The process reversed.
- 12:54The idea is when you make the decision, the money will show
- 12:57up. There's no reason for extra
- 13:00money if you're not making the decision.
- 13:03But most people won't do that. They're like, well, that's
- 13:05irresponsible. How am I, you know, I can't just
- 13:07spend money like that. If you're willing to follow
- 13:10through on it, you absolutely can't because the money will
- 13:14always be there. The problem is where a person
- 13:16stops in their own belief system.
- 13:19If they stop short, you know, it's Napoleon Hill's 3 Feet from
- 13:22Gold. If they stop short, they're so
- 13:25close they but they don't know it because they don't have the
- 13:27experience and then they don't get it.
- 13:30That was that was the, the huge awareness, the aha that I had
- 13:34when I tripled my income. I could not see something that
- 13:38was around me for two years because my attitude was so bad.
- 13:43And when I changed my attitude and I started running it like a
- 13:47machine every day, it changed my perception.
- 13:50And when my perception changed, I saw the opportunity that was
- 13:53right there with me every week. And I said yes to it and my
- 13:56income tripled. And I was like, you got to be
- 13:59freaking kidding me. I was raised in like a religious
- 14:04household and I'm not necessarily that religious
- 14:07anymore, but there was a, a quote I remember.
- 14:10I don't know if it's a scripture or a verse, but it's faith
- 14:14without works is dead. And that to me is like, if you
- 14:19have the faith that you're going to succeed or get what you want
- 14:23or do whatever, if you don't go and actually apply the the steps
- 14:27that it takes to get to where you want to be, you might as
- 14:31might as well just be a a pipe dream.
- 14:34Correct. Yeah.
- 14:35So as you've been talking, that verse has been in my head the
- 14:38whole time and, and it just, it makes so much sense when you
- 14:42think about it. You, you can wish all you want,
- 14:45but if you don't get up and actually do the steps that it
- 14:48takes, do those sales calls, meet with the right people, do
- 14:51whatever you need to do, you're just going to stay in place and
- 14:54not making any forward momentum. That's right, 100%.
- 14:58And there's something interesting about that.
- 14:59Also, there is a big dilemma when it comes to a what way were
- 15:03you raised around work, around money, even religion to A to a
- 15:08great extent. If you were raised hearing
- 15:10things like you don't need that, money doesn't grow on trees, you
- 15:14can't do anything that you want in life.
- 15:17Your foundational belief system is at that level.
- 15:20It's not at what you want, so it has to be raised to what it is
- 15:23that you want, which means you have to push yourself past
- 15:25what's comfortable in order for that to happen.
- 15:28But at the level that you're at, you'll always get what you need
- 15:31when you need it. You won't always get what you
- 15:33want, but you'll always get what you need when you need it.
- 15:36So the idea is that if I know I want to become a millionaire, I
- 15:40have to answer the mathematical question first.
- 15:43How does the math add up? Like if you have a business,
- 15:46what am I going to sell? How much do I need to sell and
- 15:50how can I do it so that it's easy?
- 15:53I do not believe God wants us to struggle in any way or sacrifice
- 15:58in any way other than things of a lower nature to become
- 16:01something of a higher nature in our life.
- 16:04God, like Christ said, my yoke is easy, my burden is light,
- 16:08right? Christ came like if you believe
- 16:10in that, Christ came to forgive people, not to keep their life
- 16:13being a burden, but to actually make it easy.
- 16:16So if you, we are raised with the idea, with the ethic, if you
- 16:20will, hard work is what you base your value on.
- 16:24I'm the hardest worker in the room now.
- 16:26When my income tripled, I went to work for another company and
- 16:29I climbed to the top of that company with nobody in the
- 16:32history of that company outside of the family that owned it had
- 16:36done that. And I did it by working harder
- 16:38than everybody else. When I started my business,
- 16:41working harder than everybody else almost crushed me because I
- 16:45did not understand how to make it easy.
- 16:48Once I understood that my income went from when I started the
- 16:51business, I was making for about the first 3-4 months about the
- 16:54equivalent of 50,000 a year in sales.
- 16:57And then I was working with my mentor and he said, David, it's
- 17:00easier. You're really making this
- 17:01difficult. This is easier.
- 17:03And I'm like, how am I making this difficult?
- 17:06But he was pushing me to to figure this out on my own.
- 17:09So after two months of trying and totally failing, I went OK,
- 17:14if he's right, if it's easier, what would be the easiest way
- 17:17for me to do this? And I thought well it would be 1
- 17:20client at 50,000 but I didn't think that I could do that at
- 17:23the time. So I said what if I raise my
- 17:26price to 15,000? Bam like that I hit the 50,000
- 17:30in two weeks and I wasn't on the phone 20 hours a day trying to
- 17:34sell people for peanuts and stuff.
- 17:36And then it was like OK I got it right I understand how to do
- 17:40this. And then took it over 1,000,000
- 17:42and beyond after that. It's the higher you go, the more
- 17:45you make, the easier it is. And you have to break past the
- 17:49idea because here's this part. I left this part out.
- 17:54When you're raised with the idea that hard work is the ethic that
- 17:57you have to have now, I think you need to work diligently.
- 17:59There's no question there. But it's not the hard part that
- 18:03gets the win. OK?
- 18:05It's the math that gets the win and the consistency that gets
- 18:08the win. But here's what I didn't
- 18:11realize, because my mind was so indoctrinated into the idea of
- 18:17hard work, when I would strategize out what I was doing,
- 18:22unconsciously, I was creating it to be hard because my mind hurt
- 18:26all my life. You got to work hard, you got to
- 18:28work hard, you got to work hard. So I never thought about saying
- 18:31to myself, what's the simplest way to a million, right?
- 18:35What's the easiest way to actually do this?
- 18:38So it was like create this system and make 10,000 phone
- 18:41calls and do this and you know, and we make it so damn
- 18:45complicated that it's a it's a wonder anybody ever gets there.
- 18:49But when I broke through that, everything changed.
- 18:53Well, it's a great point and there's a few things to unpack
- 18:55around this, getting back to this notion of stickiness.
- 18:57And what I mean is that for me, and you know, using my example
- 19:01of Napoleon Hill and my stupid piece of paper on the wall, I
- 19:03tried a version of this with your book, which was either a
- 19:06couple little moments and their key things that like your your
- 19:08mentor had given you, you know, like, hey, you know, what if you
- 19:10could make in a month what you make in a year, you know, things
- 19:13like that, right? So I tried to realign my sort of
- 19:15personal income goals and stuff around some of those frameworks
- 19:18just as a way to think about things, right?
- 19:20So it was a way to progress. But for me, and maybe, you know,
- 19:24I'm, I'm not particularly religious either, but I have
- 19:26little moments in my life where I go, OK, well, there's
- 19:28something magical about that, whether it's, you know, faith
- 19:31or, or a deity or just this is the nature of the universe.
- 19:34I've uncovered some of these things as we go.
- 19:36And so for me, a big part of buying into the underlying
- 19:40message in the millions within and in other books like that, I
- 19:43think what I had to rely on was evidence.
- 19:45And so I took a little minute and kind of tried to reflect on
- 19:48what I had done over the course of my career and how every time
- 19:51there was, you know, to your point about, you know, having
- 19:53what you need, even if it's not what you want and stuff like
- 19:55that. Like, I mean, there's little
- 19:56moments. And I always use this anecdote
- 19:57about, you know, putting out into the universe.
- 19:59I run a marketing agency. Or a design shop.
- 20:02And so every time I needed work, I just kind of put out into the
- 20:04universe is how I describe it. You know, that I needed more
- 20:06work and then work came along, right.
- 20:08And this year it hasn't worked. And so this year has been a
- 20:11really hard, hard year for me. And you know, because the
- 20:14systems, even though hope isn't much of a system, you know, the,
- 20:18the things that have always worked for me in the past
- 20:20weren't working that well. And so I have this business
- 20:23coach. I went out to London this year
- 20:27and went to this conference with him.
- 20:28His name's Michael Janda, and as part of that conference, we came
- 20:32back and he's the one who introduced me to your book just
- 20:34at the end of October, October 30th this year.
- 20:37And, and one of the things that I did in doing this little
- 20:41inventory was that as bad as things were this year, I spent
- 20:43two weeks in Spain. I went to London for a
- 20:45conference. I decided to do all the stuff
- 20:47with no money, Like how, how was there money to spend a week in
- 20:51London, you know, But nonetheless, it happened, right?
- 20:54So I started taking this little inventory and it really helped
- 20:58me jump the hurdles where I might have otherwise been
- 21:00cynical on the belief front. So, but now here I am.
- 21:03And like I say, I mean, I got really excited about these
- 21:05ideas, right? So I took the the learnings of
- 21:08the book and basically I broke it into a 5 an essay or a series
- 21:12of five essays to help me just kind of make concrete these
- 21:16notions in my head, right? So it was like my way of doing
- 21:19that. I do a weekly newsletter.
- 21:20So each week for five weeks in November, I wrote an essay and
- 21:23each one is sort of on different aspects of this, you know,
- 21:25belief and reprogramming, and yet, you know, these different
- 21:27things. And it was really a notion to
- 21:29help me build that or make it concrete in my head.
- 21:31Then, you know, that turned into a downloadable object that was
- 21:35supposed to be 20 pages that turned out to be 200 pages.
- 21:37That's now going to be a physical book and all this
- 21:39stuff. And so I'm seeing all this
- 21:40traction all of a sudden, right then this week, there's two days
- 21:44this week just, I mean, this morning and yesterday that I
- 21:46woke up feeling really uneasy about things and feeling like
- 21:50all of a sudden I'm, I'm not making progress.
- 21:52And even though I'm getting more sales calls and I'm talking to
- 21:54more people in the realm where we're trying to take our
- 21:56business, I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere.
- 21:59And so what's starting to happen is I think the same thing that
- 22:02happened when I had my little piece of paper on the wall,
- 22:04which is now doubt is coming in and, and messing with me.
- 22:08And so back to this notion of stickiness, I think what happens
- 22:11for some entrepreneurs, maybe I'm just projecting.
- 22:13So maybe I should just say, at least to me is my own brain or
- 22:18my own thought processes will start to get in my way and
- 22:20they'll keep me from sticking to these things.
- 22:22So I can see you can, I can just mean laid out for you a month of
- 22:26evidence that just changing my mind worked pretty well.
- 22:29I got a lot done in November, but, but you know, now I'm like,
- 22:33well, I don't know. And now I'm starting to think
- 22:35business as usual. And I just had a call with my
- 22:36accountant and there was sure a lot of negative talk in there.
- 22:39And, you know, and like I'm, I'm feeling myself starting to spin
- 22:42back out, right. And so I wonder if you'd just
- 22:44talk a little bit about like, even in your own case, you know,
- 22:46you were obviously in a really difficult situation when you
- 22:48decided to make the change. And, and you know, you, you had
- 22:51the, whatever it is, call it intuition about changing your
- 22:53attitude, but somehow you managed to take that and stick
- 22:57with it forever. And I don't want to make a
- 22:59generalization about you being from Chicago, but I know
- 23:01Chicagoans could be a little bit, you know, aggressive or
- 23:04assertive and, and they might get passionate about things or
- 23:06excited about things. And that is not my personality.
- 23:10I don't get jacked about much. And like, even when I'm enjoying
- 23:12myself, like I'm not hitting these high highs that a lot of
- 23:15people do. And so I'm not hungry for the
- 23:17money outside of to say that I'd like to not worry about the
- 23:20money. And I'm not, you know, dying to
- 23:23win 100 new clients because like, I just need enough to get
- 23:26by, you know? And so, but that sort of
- 23:27dichotomy that's happening in my head, I think is keeping me from
- 23:31getting to the level of stickiness to build the type of
- 23:33consistency you're talking about for like a long run.
- 23:36So I wonder if you could talk about all that, if there's any
- 23:38way to parse all that nonsense into.
- 23:39Something there is. So I call that a sabotage
- 23:42strategy, and everybody has one. And the idea is to understand
- 23:47what yours is. So let me tell you how it works.
- 23:49First, your subconscious mind operates on pattern recognition.
- 23:55It knows every pattern to keep you exactly where you are right
- 23:58now. That's why I say you always get
- 23:59what you need when you need it right now.
- 24:02Here's the thing. You set a goal to go past that
- 24:05pattern. Your subconscious mind doesn't
- 24:08know that that's safe. Not for any person.
- 24:12If you're setting a goal that you've never accomplished
- 24:14before, you have to go into the unknown as a human being.
- 24:18Your subconscious mind senses the deviation between where you
- 24:23are and that goal that you say that you want, and it goes,
- 24:26wait, hold it, hold it, hold it. That's dangerous.
- 24:29We don't have a pattern for that.
- 24:31I've got to figure out a way to stop, Brian.
- 24:34So then it starts running a pattern.
- 24:37And what it's looking for is to create some kind of a
- 24:40distraction in your life that you will agree with in order to
- 24:45stop as soon as it finds it. If you don't know that you're
- 24:50running a pattern, you will go along with whatever it notices,
- 24:54right? It could be what the accountants
- 24:56are saying, a Bumble here or there, Something's not working.
- 25:00And you get focused on the wrong thing.
- 25:03And then you say to yourself, I don't have time to go after that
- 25:05goal right now. I got to pay the bills.
- 25:07Now I don't have time to do this other thing.
- 25:10It could be in your family. It could be in your personal
- 25:12health. It could be in your team, it
- 25:15could be absolutely anywhere. But the key is remember this
- 25:19always. In order for it to work, it has
- 25:22to get you to agree with it. That's the sneaky part.
- 25:26That's the insidious part about your subconscious mind, because
- 25:30when you agree with it, you're under the false premise that
- 25:33you're actually thinking and you're not.
- 25:34You're triggered and then that for a person will stop right
- 25:38there. Well, I think that makes a lot
- 25:40of sense the way that I described it.
- 25:41So we had Bob Berg on the show not too long ago and he, you
- 25:44know, is famous for his go giver movement and all that stuff.
- 25:47But one of the things I talked to him about was, you know, that
- 25:50I have this feeling in my life that I've run into like an
- 25:52invisible barrier, right? Like I've I've hit a peak or
- 25:55whatever and I can't get through it.
- 25:56Like I can't see the other side or like I, I can understand
- 26:00that, you know, there's something in the way that's
- 26:02keeping me from moving, right. And he described it as the lid,
- 26:04I guess, is a psychological concept, this, this notion of
- 26:07the lid. But so as it pertains to
- 26:10stickiness and all the stuff, I think what you've described is
- 26:12exactly that, right? So now we've seen the, the, the
- 26:15side that I think a lot of us live.
- 26:17But now what's the solution? Like, how do we work through
- 26:20that? And I've always attributed this
- 26:22to fear or lack of, you know, like, like you almost need
- 26:25somebody to hold your hand and walk you through it.
- 26:26Because once you've done it, then you're prepared to teach
- 26:28others, but tell them, how do you get through that?
- 26:31So the idea is that you you have to ask yourself 2 questions
- 26:36whenever you're going to do a new goal.
- 26:38First one, am I able to do it? If you don't think you're able
- 26:43to do it, you'll sabotage yourself before you even get out
- 26:45of the gate. So you have to answer yes to
- 26:47that. OK.
- 26:48The second question is, am I willing?
- 26:52Am I willing? But am I willing?
- 26:54What? Well, we don't know because we
- 26:56don't know what it's going to take for you to get to your
- 26:57goal. But you have to say, yes, I'm
- 26:59willing. I'm willing to do whatever it
- 27:00takes to get to the goal. Now, the idea is that once you
- 27:04start in that direction, the thing that you have to be
- 27:06looking for is what is the next step?
- 27:10And then you have to take that next step in faith.
- 27:12So my question to you, Ryan, would be where do you stop?
- 27:16What is the thing that gets your attention that causes you to
- 27:20stop and not move forward? I think for me, it ends up
- 27:23coming back to financial matters.
- 27:25And so, and it's I'm a pretty creative guy.
- 27:28I'm a little bit spastic in that I sort of chase down everything
- 27:32and, and Mike and I have traced down a number of these things
- 27:35together. In fact, this podcast started
- 27:37out as one of them nine years ago.
- 27:38And you know, so so I tend to jump onto the new thing pretty
- 27:42quick, right? So it's a little bit of that
- 27:44shiny object syndrome. And so as I think about my
- 27:47career and things like that, like I'm usually good for about
- 27:503 years someplace and then in almost every job I've ever had,
- 27:53I go three years and then I'm on to the next thing.
- 27:55And so it although it almost every time comes from a layoff
- 27:57and then I go back to. Work somewhere else, so it's a
- 27:59force situation. Yeah, well, that's what it feels
- 28:02like anyway. And so, and like I say, I mean,
- 28:04it's it's not financial to the point of greed.
- 28:07It's financial too. I just want to be creative every
- 28:09day and not even worry about it, you know what I mean?
- 28:11And so and I know a lot of people have the objective of,
- 28:14you know, I want to make $1,000,000 so that I can just,
- 28:17you know, whatever life, life would be so much easier like
- 28:19that. But like for me, it's not even
- 28:20really about that. I want to be able to do more for
- 28:22more people. And so and money would
- 28:24facilitate that. Me getting out from under some
- 28:26of the problems in our life as to in terms of finances and
- 28:29things like that would be great. In the past, I've always been
- 28:32able to sort of, I guess, quote UN quote, manifest this money by
- 28:35wishing new work into existence. And after I took a year out of
- 28:39my business last year, it just isn't working out that way.
- 28:42There's all these kinds of things, but so they're all
- 28:43stacking right now. But right now, money seems like
- 28:46the answer, even though it may not be money.
- 28:49Yeah, it's rarely the answer because it's rarely the problem.
- 28:53What do you think? You have a money problem?
- 28:55You're looking in the wrong direction.
- 28:56Money's in effect. It's not a problem.
- 28:58It's not a cause, something else is causing it.
- 29:02So the, the number one question you need to ask yourself, and I
- 29:05think that you need to seriously answer this question and it's
- 29:08not a right now answer this question.
- 29:10It's think about it. What do you really want?
- 29:15And you have to you have to determine what you want without
- 29:18any kind of justification behind it.
- 29:20You can want it because you want it no matter what it is.
- 29:24Now we're not taught that. So it's a big thing to
- 29:27breakthrough it. When my mentor said to me, when
- 29:30he told me this, he said you may have to think about this for a
- 29:32year to figure this out. Everything in our life is
- 29:38programmed based on what we need, right?
- 29:40We're problem first thinkers. We're trying to deal with the
- 29:43issues that are going on in our life and all of that's bullshit
- 29:47because it's not taking you where you want to go.
- 29:49As long as your subconscious keeps focusing on problems that
- 29:53you can fix, you're not charting the course for your own life.
- 29:57Yeah, well, and that that notion of what you really want is
- 30:00actually it's something that I had written down here, which is,
- 30:02you know, so to to broaden this out a little bit out of just my
- 30:05own personal experience, I think there's a lot of people who get
- 30:08caught up living somebody else's dream.
- 30:10And some of this is, you know, maybe it's that that inner
- 30:13voice, you know, and you're, you're chasing after whatever it
- 30:15was your mom and dad didn't get. Or you saw something on
- 30:18Instagram. Yeah, they want people to like
- 30:20them. That's the thing that corrupts
- 30:23most people, that they don't have success.
- 30:26They're not answering their own heart.
- 30:28What do I want? This is my life, right?
- 30:32I'm an adult. I should be able to go towards
- 30:34the life that I want, not considering whether other but
- 30:37somebody's going to like me or agree with me.
- 30:40That is a death trap for everybody, right?
- 30:44Because if you were to ask me, what's the number one problem
- 30:46that I've seen in 26 years of coaching people?
- 30:49It's that poor people back out of their own dream.
- 30:52It's that somebody in their family disagreed with what they
- 30:56were doing and gave them hell. And then they had they They
- 31:00couldn't get the person to change, so they quit.
- 31:03Instead of walking away from the person, they quit on their dream
- 31:07number one reason. Yeah, no.
- 31:09And I totally believe that. And I wonder, you know, if just
- 31:13as we're talking about this topic in particular and we can
- 31:15pivot here shortly, but the the idea of, I guess uncovering what
- 31:19it is that you actually want like this is, you know, of
- 31:21course, a big question with probably an even bigger answer,
- 31:24but. How do we?
- 31:26How do we? Strip away a lot of these
- 31:28things, right, Because I mean, I mean, there's a lot of people
- 31:30that might just you know, or, and this maybe goes back to my
- 31:33comment about the Chicagoans, no offense to the Chicagoans, but
- 31:36you know, for some people, I feel like passion or the thing
- 31:38they're chasing is more obvious, right?
- 31:40So for, for, you know, somebody, maybe their thing is, you know,
- 31:43all I want to do is give back. Or like, if you look, listen to
- 31:45like Tony Robbins origin stories or whatever, you know, his whole
- 31:48thing was just, I didn't eat. So I want to feed everyone, you
- 31:50know, these kinds of things. So the passion sort of reveals
- 31:53itself, right? And then it doesn't feel like
- 31:55work because you're doing the thing you love.
- 31:57So for a lot of people who are caught up doing whatever it is
- 31:59they're doing, I don't know that they have this clarity around
- 32:02their, their thing. They're busy playing whack A
- 32:04mole or they're chasing the problem of the day or whatever
- 32:06it is. And they're not thinking in the,
- 32:08in this sort of, I guess, grander scheme of things.
- 32:11I wonder if you'd talk about that.
- 32:12And I mean, you know, I don't expect it to be an easy answer,
- 32:15but I wonder if you had some thoughts.
- 32:16It's actually a simple answer. Easy is different, but it is a
- 32:19simple answer. So what you're asking here was
- 32:22the spiritual question of my life since I was a child.
- 32:25So I was born in 1966. So I saw even though I was
- 32:29little, my father was in in Vietnam.
- 32:32I saw and heard the talkings of the assassination of Martin
- 32:35Luther King and Robert Kennedy Junior and Malcolm X and like
- 32:40all this, all this stuff, and then all the craziness that was
- 32:43going on that was on the news or whatever.
- 32:44And I'm, I'm starting to go through the catechism classes as
- 32:50a Catholic and they're telling you God loves you.
- 32:53God loves all of his children, all that kind of stuff.
- 32:55And I would say that why are there so many people that are in
- 32:57such a mess? And I would get railed for this,
- 33:01right? I'd get whacked from the nuns or
- 33:03punished from the priest or whatever.
- 33:05They did not like this question and nobody ever in all the years
- 33:09that I asked a question gave me an answer other than there's
- 33:13some things God just doesn't want us to know.
- 33:16And I thought, that's bullshit. I do not believe that for a
- 33:20second. And here's what I used because I
- 33:22spent, I did. I did come was born and raised
- 33:25in Chicago. But in the summertime, we used
- 33:28to go fishing and hunting up in Wisconsin.
- 33:30We spent a lot of time out in nature.
- 33:32I love being out in nature and I used to, I used to sit and just
- 33:36ponder life like I'm sure many people have.
- 33:39And I would say, you know something, the animals don't
- 33:41wonder what they're supposed to do.
- 33:43They know extinctively what they're supposed to do.
- 33:46They don't fight with who they are every day they get up.
- 33:50They do whatever a squirrel does.
- 33:51You don't ever see a squirrel sitting in the yard going, I'm
- 33:54worried I'm not going to have enough nuts for the winter.
- 33:56And then a psychiatrist squirrel comes over and gives them some
- 33:58Xanax to calm them down. You don't ever see this.
- 34:02And I thought, wait a minute, If God created nature that way, why
- 34:06would God create us in a way where we have no direction in
- 34:09our life? And then that thought led to the
- 34:13next thought was, well, maybe God did create us to have
- 34:16direction in our life, but we're not taught how to find it and
- 34:20follow it. So I pursued that question for
- 34:23years and I found the answer. And the answer is that God did
- 34:28give us a purpose and a direction for our life, but
- 34:31almost everything that we've learned as kids is taught to
- 34:34ignore it because it comes from the desire of what you really
- 34:38want. So we're not allowed to have
- 34:40what we really want. We're focused on survival and
- 34:43what we need and taking care of our family and being responsible
- 34:47and doing what other people tell us, which is a whole other thing
- 34:50that I could talk to you about, however.
- 34:52So I figured out a way to get people to breakthrough this
- 34:55adults. And the idea is if you don't
- 34:57really know what you want, start with this.
- 35:01Identify the things in your life that you know that you want.
- 35:04I don't care how small they are. Could be a new wallet, but
- 35:07you're telling yourself no. And it doesn't matter what the
- 35:10reason is. That's not the right time.
- 35:11I don't have the money. I'll buy it for Christmas.
- 35:13I'll do and start saying yes to it.
- 35:16Because all this is, is a subconscious pattern.
- 35:19If you break the subconscious pattern, that desire, that God
- 35:23desire, that spirit desire, that universe desire will come up
- 35:26from the inside and you will become face to face with it.
- 35:31That is exactly how I figured out what I wanted to do.
- 35:35But The thing is, is that you have, it has to be OK for your
- 35:38subconscious mind to show you what it is.
- 35:41Otherwise a person will shut down right around it.
- 35:44So every person that I give this to, if they do what I what, what
- 35:47I'm saying, identify what you want now that you're telling
- 35:52yourself no about. And then you do two things.
- 35:55Number one, you start saying yes to those things, but then you
- 35:59have to take it one more step. The things that you know that
- 36:03you don't like and that you don't want to do in your life,
- 36:06you have to say no to. And that's another problem.
- 36:09People say yes to shit all the time and they don't want to do
- 36:12it. It's like you're wasting your
- 36:13life doing those things. And it's usually because they
- 36:16want to make somebody else happy.
- 36:17They're not taking authority back for their own life, Saying
- 36:20no to what you don't want and yes to what you do want.
- 36:24And if you do that, I would think within a month or two you
- 36:26probably have a real big epiphany about your own life.
- 36:29Well, I think that's great. And I think one of the things
- 36:31that you use as evidence in the book anyway for for this notion
- 36:34is that the idea that if somebody called you and said,
- 36:37Hey, I've kidnapped your kid and you didn't have the special set
- 36:39of skills, you know, and they said you got to come up with,
- 36:42you know, some ransom cash or whatever, Like what would you do
- 36:44to make it happen? Right.
- 36:45And I think most people, whether it's, you know, I need a new
- 36:48car, I need a new apt, I need a new whatever it is in your life,
- 36:52I think most people would figure it out.
- 36:55You know, now I would caveat that or maybe ask you about
- 36:58which is there's a way to get it done and then there's like maybe
- 37:02a not, maybe it's not super responsible way of getting it
- 37:04done, which is, hey, I want that new Porsche.
- 37:06I don't really have any money, but I could get the loan.
- 37:09So I'll just go get the loan and then I can't pay for it, you
- 37:11know? So it's like there's an
- 37:11irresponsible way to get into the thing you want.
- 37:14Just to. Like scratch it off.
- 37:16It's only irresponsible if you don't intend to pay for it.
- 37:20So that's that's the first thing that most people do.
- 37:23They start going, I, I really want a Porsche, but I shouldn't
- 37:27want that first. I should build the business
- 37:28first. No, you shouldn't.
- 37:30That's the way. See, people don't understand how
- 37:33God works. God is working through you to
- 37:36lead you to something. If you constantly say no to it,
- 37:39you can't get to it, right? So I wouldn't say this to a
- 37:45group of high school students without teaching them the
- 37:48opposite. The flip side, like here's what
- 37:50it is that you actually have to do, but you have to think to
- 37:53yourself. Responsible means my ability to
- 37:56respond. It is not a judgement for what
- 37:59you do or what somebody else thinks you should do first or
- 38:02second, If you want that car, go get the car and then go to work
- 38:07to pay that car off because that car is going to open up
- 38:10something in you that you haven't met inside yourself yet.
- 38:12You just don't know it because you haven't gotten the car.
- 38:17In all of nature, all nature is attracted to itself.
- 38:23It's attracted to the thing that it's supposed to be with.
- 38:25And you're going to tell me with human beings, that's supposed to
- 38:28be the opposite. We're not supposed to be
- 38:30attracted. We're supposed to be rigid and
- 38:33do a bunch of shit we don't like our whole life.
- 38:37Yeah, yeah. It doesn't make a lot of sense.
- 38:39It doesn't make sense. Even Robin said.
- 38:41Success leaves clues, but don't necessarily look at people for a
- 38:45great example of it. Look at nature and say, does
- 38:48this make sense in nature? I do it all the time because
- 38:51it's like, if it's true there and life flourishes amazingly in
- 38:55nature, unless we unless we interrupt it, right?
- 38:59It does it really does what it does on its own just perfectly.
- 39:03But human beings, they can't get out of their own way.
- 39:05And it's because we've got a subset of rules.
- 39:07A lot of it was indoctrinated in the Industrial Revolution
- 39:11because they wanted to create people to do what they're told.
- 39:14Yeah, 9:00 to 5:00. You got it.
- 39:16Exactly. And then that's been going on
- 39:18for several generations now. People don't know anything any
- 39:21different. Yeah.
- 39:23No, I think that's right. Yeah, Go ahead, Mike.
- 39:26So you've mentioned Robbins a few times and I'm not going to
- 39:29name drop or say what I do or what I have the opportunity to
- 39:34work with him coming up here in a little bit.
- 39:35I've never read these books. I've never read your books.
- 39:38Apologies. I'm going to.
- 39:39Can you maybe talk about your relationship with him and how
- 39:43he's affected your life? Because I'm going to have some.
- 39:47100% So, so this, this is an interesting story.
- 39:52I didn't, I had no idea who Tony Robbins was, but this is way
- 39:55back in the early 90s. I come home from work and my
- 39:59wife would make me some food. I'd get it out of the out of the
- 40:01refrigerator, put it in the microwave and I'd sit down and
- 40:03turn a television on, right. So this is like 3/4, 5:00 in the
- 40:06morning. One day I turn the TV on and
- 40:09there's Young Tony with Fran Tarkenton.
- 40:11How can his personal power tapes, right, is the first
- 40:15infomercial. And the first night I sat there
- 40:18and I'm like, Oh my God, this guy's talking about everything
- 40:21that I'm thinking about. But because we had gone
- 40:25bankrupt, we made this agreement with each other that we wouldn't
- 40:28charge anything. So I'm like, forget that.
- 40:31And I shut it off, went to bed, didn't even think about it the
- 40:34next day. Come home the next night, same
- 40:37thing. And I'm like, it's only 167
- 40:41bucks. I think that's what the price
- 40:42was. I'm going to do this.
- 40:44So I get up, right? This is where the phone's
- 40:46hanging on the kitchen wall, right?
- 40:47No cell phone. So I go in the kitchen, dial the
- 40:49number, the operator answers, and I freaked out and hung up
- 40:52the phone. I couldn't buy it.
- 40:53I was too scared. Third night, I managed to pull
- 40:57the trigger and I bought it. And I started listening to his
- 41:01thing and he wasn't answering the spiritual question for me
- 41:05because he didn't talk about that at all back then.
- 41:08But he was answering a lot of other questions.
- 41:09And I was also hearing him talk about books that he read.
- 41:12So that got me reading some of the right books because I didn't
- 41:14even know what direction to go with that.
- 41:17But I got an opportunity, 1993, to go to one of his seminars in
- 41:21Dayton, OH. It was 3600 bucks to go.
- 41:25I had just fulfilled one of my goals.
- 41:27I bought a fishing boat and it paid it off, but I didn't have
- 41:30the 3600 bucks to go to this seminar.
- 41:33And I'm standing in my kitchen with my wife and I'm like, I
- 41:36really want to go. I feel like I need to go to
- 41:38this. I got to go.
- 41:39It was in February, this was December.
- 41:41And she said to me, well, come up with the money.
- 41:43You could go. But I don't know if we're going
- 41:45to get 3600 bucks plus you got to travel, plus you got to feed
- 41:48yourself like those like 5 grand when you're done, right?
- 41:51And I'm looking out my kitchen window and I see my boat there
- 41:54and I, it dawns on me if I can figure out what I'm doing, I
- 41:58could buy any boat that I want. Sold the boat that week I went
- 42:01and bought my first computer. So I went to the Tony Robbins
- 42:04thing. I had 12 grand.
- 42:06I bought a computer, started to learn how to use the computer.
- 42:09However, I started going to Tony Robbins stuff pretty regularly
- 42:12and I got an opportunity to be on his behind the scenes team
- 42:15and all this stuff which I really didn't participate in,
- 42:18but I got to know him a little bit.
- 42:21And then so every, I was looking for somebody to answer the
- 42:25spiritual question, which he wasn't answering.
- 42:29So I was kind of doing his stuff.
- 42:30And I was also looking at a few other people.
- 42:34However, when I started the business, there was a guy at the
- 42:384th year that I was in business that embezzled $5 million from
- 42:42our company, left me broke, took my, my, my marketing list that I
- 42:47had built over 4 years. And I didn't know what to do.
- 42:49So I reached out to Tony and he told me exactly how to fix the
- 42:52problem right? And I turn it around in a year.
- 42:56He told me how to renegotiate all my credit.
- 42:59He told me how to breakthrough and get people that you could
- 43:01renegotiate credit with. And then he's like, and here's
- 43:05what he said that I thought was amazing.
- 43:07He said don't. He said you need to call every
- 43:09creditor that you owe money to and you need to tell them what
- 43:13you're willing to pay. He said just call him.
- 43:15So you had a financial hardship. You tell him what you're willing
- 43:18to pay, even if it's 5 bucks a month, he said, but have enough
- 43:22money leftover so you can take your wife out to eat.
- 43:25He said you don't want to put yourself in a position where you
- 43:27hate what you're doing, he said, But you've already built this.
- 43:30Go out and do it again. You'll build it faster the
- 43:33second time. And I followed, but he's told me
- 43:36to a tee, turned everything around in 12 months.
- 43:39So that was the extent of my relationship with him.
- 43:43I worked with some people that were like Carolyn McCormick, who
- 43:46was worked with him very closely in the latter years, but she
- 43:50passed away in 2014. But, but that's really what gave
- 43:55me my start in, you know, thinking differently.
- 43:58And then my, my big mentor was Bob Proctor. him and I worked
- 44:01together very closely for a period of about 7 years.
- 44:05And I think that the major change that I had came from Bob.
- 44:09Yeah. Procter Campbell, is that Bob?
- 44:13By Pardon me. Oh, yeah.
- 44:16Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 44:18All right. OK, so just to kind of circle
- 44:21back and keep going on our, our little journey here.
- 44:24So we have, you know, let's say we've locked in our thing that
- 44:27we want to chase down that we actually want.
- 44:29And we have some, you know, beliefs structure starting to
- 44:32show up and we're starting to feel good about what we're
- 44:34doing. We've decided to be disciplined
- 44:36enough to be sticky and actually be chasing these things and
- 44:39feeling what we want. But there's one thing that I've
- 44:41sort of noticed with, you know, books like, I mean, or, and
- 44:44maybe I just missed it, maybe I, I'm not the best reader of all
- 44:47time, but like in Napoleon Hill's book and things like
- 44:49this, there's a lot of here's all the belief and here's all
- 44:52the things that you should do and here's all the stuff.
- 44:54And then we're rich. So there's this gap or this
- 44:57thing that I call the gap that sort of appears in, in a lot of
- 44:59these texts. And a lot of these guys like,
- 45:02you know, Napoleon Hill, like, I mean, he really didn't make his
- 45:05money until he started selling the idea of wealth to everybody,
- 45:08you know what I mean? So it wasn't like he came up
- 45:10through the ranks. So like in your case, your
- 45:12story, I think is a little more compelling in that, you know,
- 45:15even though I think a lot of the truths that he shared are
- 45:17similar to truths that you talk about in your book, you know,
- 45:19and and I will say to your point about Tony Robbins, like your
- 45:22book hit me at the moment that my brain was ready to hear those
- 45:25things, right when I heard it from Napoleon and some of these
- 45:28other guys over the last several years, you know, it just didn't
- 45:30do anything for me. But this time around, it was
- 45:33different, you know, the way you phrase things or your experience
- 45:35or whatever. But when I started looking at
- 45:37some of those other authors, you know, so many of them, you know,
- 45:41even the Tony Robbins, like, you know, they made their money
- 45:43telling people how to make their money.
- 45:45You know, they didn't, they didn't really come up through
- 45:46the ranks that somebody who's working kind of rank and file
- 45:49might. And so I wondered if you'd talk
- 45:51about it and maybe. How do you do that?
- 45:52Well, I guess what I mean is that so in your case, your your
- 45:56story goes, hey, I'm, I'm. And maybe it's just because it's
- 45:58not all in the book, but it's, you know, I was forklift
- 46:01operators making 20 grand a year, then I tripled and then
- 46:04now we're building millions of dollars a month, right?
- 46:06But there's a big gap there. I think just an instruction in.
- 46:10Terms of I went to the top, I went to the top of the company,
- 46:14Yeah, right. Yeah, so I understand that now,
- 46:17but I learned that in listening to podcasts, you know, preparing
- 46:19for this, you know, and listening to other interviews, I
- 46:21heard that stuff, that little bit of gap was missing.
- 46:24But when I look at guys like Napoleon Hill, and I think you
- 46:27pointed this out, which I thought was really good.
- 46:28So the point is that, you know, even though Napoleon didn't
- 46:30like, he wasn't an executive in some company, he wasn't like a
- 46:33Ray Dalio type. In his case, he interviewed the
- 46:37top 500 people and basically, you know, parsed that advice
- 46:40into something actionable. And so the way that that was
- 46:44done, I think is really powerful.
- 46:45And so I wondered if, I mean, what I, what I'm trying to get
- 46:48at here in, in this gap, it's for people who, you know, get to
- 46:51a certain point, they buy into the belief, they buy into, hey,
- 46:54I'm willing to have a mantra or whatever, you know, depending on
- 46:56which book you're reading, there's that, that gap between
- 47:00where the results start to show up.
- 47:01And I think we talked a little bit earlier about doubt, but I
- 47:03think some of that doubt is like trying to uncover if you're
- 47:06actually on the right path, you know, and I wonder if you had
- 47:09some indicators or some markers for people as they're starting
- 47:11to move. You know, in your case, and I
- 47:13think yours will be the case of a lot of people moving up
- 47:15through a company where you have sort of milestones, right?
- 47:17You hit a thing, but you could never have made millions as a
- 47:20forklift operator. You know, instead you had to
- 47:22move up through this rank of things.
- 47:23And I don't know, I mean, maybe you loved put the petroleum
- 47:26business and that was the that was the way to go for you.
- 47:28But for a lot of people, you know, if you're just rank and
- 47:30file and you're working retail somewhere and you've got grand
- 47:33aspirations of doing something, I guess how do you know that the
- 47:36path you're on is meandering in the correct path?
- 47:39Or if if there's even a way to know.
- 47:41I was just trusting. See, the thing that was most
- 47:44important to me was to fight. So First off, let me start with
- 47:48this. When my income tripled, that
- 47:50open to curiosity in me that I had never seen before, I wanted
- 47:54to know how that happened. I knew that it wasn't just luck,
- 47:57OK? Because I believed in God and I
- 48:00believe that there's an order to the universe.
- 48:02I don't believe in luck whatsoever.
- 48:05So I'm like, how did this happen?
- 48:07So I'm following that path. I was working at the petroleum
- 48:11company because I found something that I can make enough
- 48:13money to treat my family well, to be able to raise my, my kids.
- 48:17And I worked very hard at it, right?
- 48:19Because I was like just changing as a person.
- 48:22So worked very hard at it. Went to the top of the company,
- 48:25started there as a petroleum truck driver.
- 48:28When I left, I was in charge of expanding the company across the
- 48:31country. So that'll give you that ride.
- 48:33OK. But when I left, I didn't know
- 48:36what I was going to do. So I started waking up at 2:20
- 48:41every morning with a voice in my head that said, David, if you
- 48:43want to live your dream, you have to leave.
- 48:45Now prior to this I was thinking about owning a hot dog stand, a
- 48:50pizza place, corner drugstore, like a like a convenience store
- 48:54711. Like I was thinking about things
- 48:56that I thought that I could do. I wasn't thinking about what I
- 49:00really wanted and I wasn't sure what I wanted.
- 49:03So I start having this experience six months into it.
- 49:07I'm getting no further ahead. So I went to Proctor and I said
- 49:11to him, I said I don't know what the hell this is.
- 49:14I said but it's saying if I want to live my dream I have to
- 49:16leave. And he said to me then just
- 49:18quit. I said I can't just quit.
- 49:21I got 4 kids now. I got a house mortgage, you
- 49:24know, the whole thing. I can't just quit.
- 49:27And he, that's what he said to me, you'll always get what you
- 49:29need when you need it. I'm so I'm like, this path is so
- 49:34crazy. It's the craziest thing.
- 49:36Sometimes I think I'm losing my mind on this path because it's
- 49:40having me do things that just busted the logic of every way
- 49:43that I was raised. So I thought about it.
- 49:47I really thought about what he said.
- 49:48You always get what you need. At first I totally disagreed
- 49:51with it, but then as I began to study my own life and other
- 49:55people, I realized he was 100% right.
- 49:57I'm like, how can that be? How can that actually be?
- 50:02So it got to the point where I said I've got to know.
- 50:07I've got to know the answer to this.
- 50:09This was first and foremost before making a million, before
- 50:12wanting to even make a million. I said I'm going to quit.
- 50:16I'm going to do what he said, and the guy's never steered me
- 50:19wrong before. I'm going to quit and see what
- 50:21happens, right? So I quit.
- 50:24I quit. Didn't tell anybody.
- 50:25The only person that knew was my wife.
- 50:28And I waited and I waited for 30 days.
- 50:31Halfway into the waiting, I'm starting to get nervous.
- 50:35Nothing is showing up, right? I'm talking about my life's
- 50:38purpose, my work. Like what is it?
- 50:42We get a phone call from the woman that lives next door to
- 50:44us, and she says she's talking to my wife on the phone.
- 50:47My kids just went to school and my wife's going.
- 50:50Huh. Huh.
- 50:51Yeah, sure. Yeah, You need to come over.
- 50:53OK, So she my wife says to me, she called and said she she has
- 50:59this thing where she wakes up in the middle of the night and she
- 51:01gets a message for someone. She said her husband thinks
- 51:04she's crazy. And her husband said, don't you
- 51:06dare call the Nagels because we don't want to lose our friends.
- 51:10But he went to work and she said, I have to call you.
- 51:13She said, can I come over? She said, yes, I'm sitting
- 51:15there, We're sitting there and I said you didn't say anything to
- 51:18her, ninja. She says, I didn't say anything
- 51:19to anybody. Nobody knows but you and me.
- 51:22She goes sometimes I get a message from God for people in
- 51:26the middle of the night. She goes, now if you want to
- 51:29think I'm crazy, I'm crazy, but I have to tell you this and then
- 51:33you do with it whatever you want.
- 51:35She said God woke me up at 2:20 in the morning, 2:20 in the
- 51:39morning, OK, the same time I was waking up and said go tell David
- 51:44it's on its way, hang in there. And I just started crying.
- 51:49I was sobbing at the table. It I was like, I cannot believe
- 51:54this is happening. 2 weeks later, I got an invitation from
- 51:57my mentor, a generic invitation not directly to me to be a
- 52:02facilitator for his programs. And I didn't even answer the
- 52:07e-mail. I was like, no, that's not it.
- 52:11And my wife saw it because we had a joint account right back
- 52:13in the AOL days or whatever. And she looks at it and she
- 52:17goes, are you effing crazy? This is what you're supposed to
- 52:21do. And I'm like, there's no way
- 52:23that's what I'm supposed to do. I'm like, I can't, I couldn't go
- 52:26to those people have probably have a PhD and this and that or
- 52:30another. And she said, I don't think so.
- 52:32She goes, I think this is it. And then she said, look at the
- 52:35smile on your face. So that was it.
- 52:37I made the decision, I went that that would that everything was
- 52:39history after that. And I love it more than anything
- 52:43I've ever done in my life. Yeah, I love that.
- 52:45And I think it kind of makes the point that I was hoping to try
- 52:47and get at, which is that, you know, you know, at least in my
- 52:50mind, many of these books, there is this gap of how to.
- 52:53But I think what that points to is actually the notion of being
- 52:56receptive to things and being well able to, yeah, I guess
- 52:59recognize when it comes. You know, we have the, you know,
- 53:01don't let the gift horse in the mouth.
- 53:02And we have these kinds of idioms that people have said for
- 53:05as long as you can remember, But I think so many of us, you know,
- 53:08hear the opportunity and then don't pursue it.
- 53:10Or like, for example, in my case, right now, we're in the
- 53:12middle of of trying to reposition our agency into an
- 53:16agency that focuses on a specific niche of clientele.
- 53:18And the one of the doubts that's running through my head is am I
- 53:21building an agency because I actually want to build an
- 53:23agency? Or am I building an agency
- 53:25because it's what I've always done?
- 53:27And so that's why I asked about, you know, did you love the
- 53:28petroleum business and you were just trying to grow through
- 53:30petroleum, You know what I mean? But if that wasn't actually your
- 53:33calling and you later encountered your calling, you
- 53:35know, how do people, I guess, understand when the opportunity
- 53:38is there to chase or are there mechanisms or things that we can
- 53:42develop that we can start? To trust where you are.
- 53:45So every person that I work with, we start right where they
- 53:48are and I ask him this question. Tell me what you really want and
- 53:52if they can answer the question, we start there.
- 53:55If they can't answer the question, we start with the
- 53:57exercise that I gave you. Start saying yes to what you
- 54:01want and no to what you don't want.
- 54:02That will clear the path instantly and the next step will
- 54:07be shown and then for everybody, everywhere.
- 54:13Yeah, no, I love that. So I guess kind of, you know,
- 54:16the way that people start to take these beliefs and and move
- 54:20into their sort of, I guess future state.
- 54:22Like I mentioned to you earlier, like I, I spent a lot of time
- 54:24trying to look at the evidence and this trying to convince
- 54:27myself I'm doing things, you know, the right way.
- 54:28So if you're if you're faithful, not faithful, you know, whatever
- 54:31it is that you think, for me, it made a lot of sense to look at
- 54:34my so-called evidence of of, you know, being able to achieve
- 54:37things when I wanted to. Are there any other things like
- 54:40that that you might mention? I mean, obviously there's,
- 54:42there's so much of this story and so much of these types of
- 54:45stories that really do require you to kind of open yourself up.
- 54:49So I think maybe that comes naturally for people who are
- 54:52maybe raised in a religious tradition or have a particular
- 54:55affinity for a faith or something like that, like
- 54:57they're used to being faithful. But for people who don't have
- 55:00that, you know, outside of just being open and being receptive,
- 55:05I mean, are there telltale signs?
- 55:07Are there red flags that were doing the wrong thing?
- 55:10I don't know about there's could be red flags in a person's life,
- 55:13but what you're really referring to is the idea that they have to
- 55:17follow something that they can't see, spell or touch, right?
- 55:21You can call it God, you call it spirit, you call it the
- 55:23universe, you call it energy. I don't care what you call it,
- 55:26but you have to follow it because that's the answer.
- 55:29It's not you. What what you're asking is how
- 55:32can a person have some kind of assurance?
- 55:34You cannot. You cannot.
- 55:37You have to be willing to move forward and make mistakes and
- 55:39then learn from the mistake and pick up and move forward again.
- 55:44Yeah. No, actually I think that that's
- 55:46a great little insight. It's funny, I just felt a little
- 55:48like explode moment. One of the well, one of the
- 55:51things that you know, and sorry to make this so much about me.
- 55:54I'm a little maybe I'm being a little too selfish here with
- 55:56this show, but you know, but I don't get the opportunity to
- 55:58talk to you very often. So, you know, so for me, I feel
- 56:02like a lot of my life, you know, to your point earlier, in some
- 56:04of our earlier discussion, you know, I've ended up doing the
- 56:07things that I think people think I should be doing right, not
- 56:10doing the thing that I think is necessarily right for me.
- 56:12And actually, what's right for me may not be all that different
- 56:14from what I'm doing, but the reason I'm doing what I'm doing
- 56:17is because I think it's what it's what's expected of me or
- 56:19it's what I've always done. It's, you know, those kinds of
- 56:21things. So I guess your point about, you
- 56:25know, there isn't a flag, there isn't a path, there isn't
- 56:27anything. It's just, you know, you just
- 56:29have to believe and keep doing The thing is actually for me,
- 56:32maybe a little bit of a relief, right?
- 56:33Because I spent a lot of time and I think a lot of people who
- 56:35read books like these, you know, are looking for somebody to
- 56:38solve the problem for them, right?
- 56:40It's like, Hey, you know, what can I do?
- 56:41You know, I'll just read Tony Robbins.
- 56:43He'll he'll work it out for me, you know, and it doesn't mean
- 56:45that there isn't good information and stuff in there,
- 56:47but we're almost trying to offload our agency to somebody
- 56:50else, right? And and you know, whether that's
- 56:53a podcast you like or a book you read or whatever it is.
- 56:56And so I think just even hearing you say that and just understand
- 57:01that the answer about is there a path is that there is no path or
- 57:04you know that there is an answer or or not is I think I don't
- 57:07know. For me anyway, that's a it's a
- 57:09pretty deep insight, right? Because it challenges the belief
- 57:11that was in my head, which is somebody out there will have the
- 57:14answer. I just have to keep asking.
- 57:16Right, And the answers have been in you with the whole time.
- 57:19That's what I found out. Now you can have somebody guide
- 57:21you to it, right? But the answer's inside of you.
- 57:24That's the secret that's in at the beginning of Think and Grow
- 57:28Rich that he talks about. You know, I read it several
- 57:31times and I was looking for the secret.
- 57:33I couldn't find it. It dawned on me that he
- 57:37interviewed 500 of the world's most successful people.
- 57:40He found out what they had in common.
- 57:41He came up with the principles of success, right?
- 57:44But they didn't follow those principles.
- 57:47Those were prints. They followed their heart.
- 57:49Those were the principles that showed up when they decided that
- 57:52they were going to go on a successful journey.
- 57:55But because you see, you see, all those principles in all of
- 57:58success follow your heart. He says desire in the chapter of
- 58:03Desire. Read that.
- 58:04That'll tell you how to do it. Yeah, I love that.
- 58:07And I'm not sure we could put any better bow on this.
- 58:09Well, David, I really appreciate your time, man.
- 58:12Thanks so much for doing this for us.
- 58:14Any last minute parting shots? You know, where can people learn

- 58:23You know, where can people find you if they just kind of want a
- 58:25single source of truth on David Nagle?

- 58:44It's it's done a lot for me and it hit me at the right time,
- 58:48right age, right set of thoughts and circumstances.
- 58:50So I couldn't be happier with the book.
- 58:52So thanks so much for putting it together.
