Boise’s beloved orange Hefty bags—your go-to for hard-to-recycle plastics like styrofoam and candy wrappers—are being phased out, with the program ending July 1, 2027. Since 2018, these bags diverted roughly 2,000 tons of plastic from landfills, but without them, an extra 240 tons could end up in the dump each year as the landfill fills faster than expected. The program was born after China stopped accepting recyclables, and while diesel production failed, the bags found new life in cement kilns and construction blocks.
