- 0:27Speaker 2: bad we're in it now The family group text It's
- 0:31Speaker 2: quite sacred But I think there is a little conversation
- 0:35Speaker 2: to be had about family group text etiquette.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Exhibit A. How much you send?
- 0:43Speaker 4: No.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Well, first of all, F you, Kevin Jonas. It's about no.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I've spent. Look at these. I send one, two, three,
- 0:51Speaker 3: four messages. And all I get are. Emoticons, or what
- 0:56Speaker 3: do you call those? Joe, we're with each other all
- 0:58Speaker 3: the time.
- 0:58Speaker 5: You show us the pictures in real life.
- 1:00Speaker 2: You're texting us as we're sitting at the table together.
- 1:03Speaker 3: This is for mom and dad. We're with you while
- 1:07Speaker 3: you're sending it.
- 1:07Speaker 6: This is for family photos.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You literally go like this.
- 1:09Speaker 5: I will challenge you on this.
- 1:10Speaker 3: You'll be like, look at this.
- 1:11Speaker 4: It's so cute.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I feel attacked right now. I'm like, oh, that's so cute.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Do I have to then respond on the thing? Hold on.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I'm just like, you guys are coming at me right now,
- 1:18Speaker 3: and I'm just feeling really interested. You started it.
- 1:20Speaker 5: You gave it up.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I just was trying to have a casual conversation.
- 1:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Well, next time.
- 1:24Speaker 3: No, I'm just saying before you speak, listen, there are
- 1:26Speaker 3: a lot of people in this group text your wives.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 3: And they're responding. We're together with you. We spend all
- 1:32Speaker 3: our time together. I'm just saying, all I'm saying is
- 1:35Speaker 3: if you send something, I feel like a little, like
- 1:37Speaker 3: a little bit more than a, I don't know, call
- 1:39Speaker 3: me old fashioned, but what is this Instagram? Why am
- 1:43Speaker 3: I just getting likes out here? So here's what I'll do.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I will not exclamation point. I will not respond in person.
- 1:48Speaker 5: When you show me a video or picture of your
- 1:49Speaker 5: very cute kids, I'll go.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 1:51Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I'm going to save it for the group text.
- 1:52Speaker 3: What is the context of these messages? It doesn't matter. Well,
- 1:56Speaker 3: this one might not be a good example of what's
- 1:58Speaker 3: happening in our group chat. The top one is, so
- 2:00Speaker 3: I took a screenshot of Franklin Jonas' text messages for
- 2:03Speaker 3: me from way back when, because it was his birthday,
- 2:05Speaker 3: and he said, to Margaritaville, and thought that was funny.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And then I wrote, happy birthday, Frank. That I got
- 2:10Speaker 2: a like. Probably from Kevin Sr. You ran this joke
- 2:13Speaker 2: by us before you posted.
- 2:15Speaker 5: It on the group text.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You literally said it to me in the gym. I
- 2:17Speaker 3: like he said posted it on the group text. Like
- 2:18Speaker 3: it's a feed.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Okay, boomer.
- 2:21Speaker 3: But it's great. Denise Jonas, I came as, I saw,
- 2:23Speaker 3: I conquered. Which came as wine. We'd love to get
- 2:26Speaker 3: our mom sponsored. That's important.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It'll save us a bunch of money.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You workshopped that joke with me in the gym right
- 2:33Speaker 2: before you sent it.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Okay, Kevin. We want to get our mom sponsored.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Okay miss okay and finally but not uh lastly oh
- 2:40Speaker 2: you're in your summer clothes which is a call back
- 2:41Speaker 2: to hey jonas podcast which was actually a screenshot of
- 2:45Speaker 2: an instagram and i'd say that's very funny and you
- 2:47Speaker 2: should have gotten some response that's really funny i didn't
- 2:49Speaker 2: even get anything it's funny because in the car when
- 2:51Speaker 2: you posted it on the family chat i said that
- 2:53Speaker 2: was funny in real life i love.
- 2:54Speaker 3: You said posted on the family chat so funny anyway
- 2:57Speaker 3: um i'm stressed out let's bring in our guest because
- 3:00Speaker 3: he's an incredible person and honestly He's playing a character
- 3:04Speaker 3: that solves a lot of family problems. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 3:06Speaker 3: please welcome to the pod, Bill Hader, everybody. Bill Hader
- 3:08Speaker 3: on the podcast. I never even noticed that. All I had, Bill,
- 3:12Speaker 3: was this.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Needless to say, this place has everything.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I do have that.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Or this.
- 3:18Speaker 3: So just in case. We've got options.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Oh, good.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Oh, good.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Hey, Bill, where are you FaceTiming us from?
- 3:24Speaker 4: Los Angeles, where it's 100 degrees right now.
- 3:27Speaker 3: It's very warm there.
- 3:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 4: It's obscenely hot right now.
- 3:31Speaker 3: It's great to see you.
- 3:33Speaker 2: We were just talking before you hopped in how we
- 3:36Speaker 2: go way, way back. Kevin actually said, wait, he was
- 3:39Speaker 2: the wizard in the SNL skit that we did with him, right?
- 3:41Speaker 4: I was like, yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 3: The ageless wizard. The ageless wizard of Property of the Queen.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Which we just recently saw that again, and it holds up.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Not every bit holds up.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 3:52Speaker 3: Oh, good.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Do you remember.
- 3:54Speaker 3: any of the sketches or are there ones that stand out? Like,
- 3:57Speaker 3: is it just one big blur?
- 3:59Speaker 4: Some stick out. I remember that one just cause I
- 4:01Speaker 4: had to wear that, that beard was so itchy.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Sorry about that.
- 4:05Speaker 4: And also it was nice though when I came and
- 4:06Speaker 4: you guys were laughing so much. So I was like, well,
- 4:08Speaker 4: that's good.
- 4:09Speaker 3: That's probably rare too.
- 4:10Speaker 5: You did a sketch with a bunch of teenagers, um,
- 4:13Speaker 5: on the show.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 4:15Speaker 5: I was back in 09. Valentine's Day 2009. Oh my God.
- 4:21Speaker 4: No, Andy Sandberg and I texted, uh, yesterday was the
- 4:27Speaker 4: 21st anniversary of our first show wow so we've been
- 4:31Speaker 4: on we were on snl the legal drinking.
- 4:34Speaker 8: Age you can finally drink yeah yeah now you probably
- 4:37Speaker 8: told the story a million times so sorry to ask
- 4:39Speaker 8: you this question but can you walk us through your
- 4:41Speaker 8: audition for the show and what happened when you found
- 4:44Speaker 8: out you got it i.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I got very lucky megan malaly saw me in a
- 4:48Speaker 4: in a um second city show like in 2004 that
- 4:53Speaker 4: her brother-in-law was in. And, uh, and she, you know,
- 5:00Speaker 4: Matt Offerman is really funny, great guy. And, and, uh,
- 5:03Speaker 4: we were in the show together and then she afterwards
- 5:06Speaker 4: was like, Hey, you're really funny. And then I was
- 5:09Speaker 4: working as an assistant editor at the time on Iron
- 5:13Speaker 4: Chef America. I was a nighttime assistant editor and, And she, yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 4: it was pretty awesome.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Did you do the, did you edit Iron Chef Masters
- 5:21Speaker 3: as well?
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yeah, no. Well, I don't know. It was just Iron Chef.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I don't know what the masters were. I didn't really
- 5:29Speaker 4: pay much attention to be honest. I just had a
- 5:31Speaker 4: lot of footage of Bobby Flay running around and Mario
- 5:36Speaker 4: Batali running around. And I had one thing, Bobby Flay
- 5:39Speaker 4: electrocuted himself once. We were like, oh shit.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You're going to watch the rest of the year.
- 5:44Speaker 4: He grabbed this pan and just kind of dropped. He
- 5:48Speaker 4: was fine, though. And then, yeah, she called me and
- 5:50Speaker 4: was like, I went and had dinner with Lorne Michaels
- 5:53Speaker 4: and I told him about you and they'd like to
- 5:56Speaker 4: meet you. And so I went out there and met him. He,
- 6:01Speaker 4: you know, said, yeah, you should audition. And I auditioned
- 6:04Speaker 4: a couple times. Like they came to L.A., they saw
- 6:08Speaker 4: me perform. Then we went to New York. I performed there.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And then I did a proper audition. And then the
- 6:18Speaker 4: summer of 2005, I found out I got the job.
- 6:22Speaker 4: And I remember flying up with Andy Samberg.
- 6:25Speaker 3: No way, really?
- 6:26Speaker 4: Yeah, we were on the flight together up, kind of
- 6:29Speaker 4: going like, wow, this is crazy. That's so cool, man.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And then we had dinner. I remember with Lauren. And
- 6:36Speaker 4: as we walked out, Conan O'Brien was walking in. And
- 6:38Speaker 4: we met Conan O'Brien.
- 6:39Speaker 7: And we're like.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Whoa. Like I, we were just like starstruck the whole time.
- 6:44Speaker 4: So yeah, it was really cool.
- 6:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 3: That's how I, how soon after that final audition, did
- 6:49Speaker 3: you find out that you got, uh, it was.
- 6:52Speaker 4: It was like three weeks later. I got a manager
- 6:55Speaker 4: solely off getting the audition. Like they were like, whoa,
- 6:57Speaker 4: SNL wanted to meet you. And I got a manager,
- 6:59Speaker 4: you know, Miodenkerk. And I remember we were eating and
- 7:03Speaker 4: I went to the restroom. As I came back, she
- 7:05Speaker 4: had her phone and she handed it to me and like, hello.
- 7:08Speaker 4: And it was Marcy Klein saying, Hey, so, Yeah, you're hired. Wow.
- 7:12Speaker 4: That's so awesome.
- 7:13Speaker 3: That's so cool.
- 7:14Speaker 4: That's crazy. Yeah, life changer.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Feels like from some of the other comedians that have
- 7:21Speaker 2: been on this show and other people we've talked to,
- 7:22Speaker 2: it just seems like such an intense process, though, of
- 7:25Speaker 2: going through the auditioning. What was the thing that you
- 7:28Speaker 2: went in there and was like, I can do this
- 7:29Speaker 2: and I can do it well? What gave you a
- 7:32Speaker 2: little bit of confidence going into the room?
- 7:33Speaker 4: I mean, I knew I was pretty good at impressions,
- 7:35Speaker 4: so I knew I had that. Actually, the thing that
- 7:38Speaker 4: was most helpful was finding out that, you know, you
- 7:40Speaker 4: should make your audition kind of, like, quick. Like, get
- 7:44Speaker 4: it down to, like, five minutes.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Right.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Don't go in there and, like, take your time. You know,
- 7:50Speaker 4: because I was, you were seeing people with, you know,
- 7:54Speaker 4: props and, like, different, you know, wigs and stuff they
- 7:57Speaker 4: were putting on, and I was like, I don't have
- 7:59Speaker 4: any of that. I just kind of, it was like
- 8:00Speaker 4: a stand-up, like a five-minute stand-up set. you know? And, uh,
- 8:06Speaker 4: so I kind of had the idea where I was
- 8:08Speaker 4: going to do this character. I used to do on
- 8:10Speaker 4: the show, Vinnie Vadeci, he was an Italian guy and
- 8:13Speaker 4: it was him doing impressions. So I was doing a
- 8:15Speaker 4: character doing impressions. So there would be, so here's some
- 8:19Speaker 4: of my character work and here's some impressions that I
- 8:21Speaker 4: can do. And then within that, I would do other
- 8:25Speaker 4: characters like Vinnie Vadeci would go, this is a character
- 8:27Speaker 4: I have called so-and-so, you know, whatever. And so I
- 8:30Speaker 4: was able to get it into a really tight five minutes.
- 8:34Speaker 4: And so my feeling was like, well, at least I'll
- 8:37Speaker 4: do it and they won't be bored. It'll be, I'll
- 8:39Speaker 4: be in and out, you know, so I'm not going to,
- 8:41Speaker 4: you know, maybe that'll be a plus. But I knew
- 8:43Speaker 4: it was good because a couple minutes, a couple seconds
- 8:48Speaker 4: into it, Tina Fey started laughing.
- 8:51Speaker 5: That's always a good sign.
- 8:52Speaker 4: And I really relaxed. I was like, whoa, Tina laughs. Okay.
- 8:55Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And is this in front of the other people auditioning
- 8:57Speaker 2: as well that you're doing this or is it just.
- 8:59Speaker 4: You can hear them. That was messed up. We're all
- 9:02Speaker 4: in dressing rooms, and you could hear the auditions happening.
- 9:06Speaker 4: So you were hearing other people audition, and I now
- 9:10Speaker 4: know I could have just turned it. The knob is
- 9:12Speaker 4: in the room.
- 9:12Speaker 3: The knob's in the room. But I didn't know that.
- 9:15Speaker 4: That's so interesting.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So you could listen to the other auditions.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I don't know if they did it on purpose, or
- 9:20Speaker 4: they just didn't. They forgot that some of the dressing
- 9:24Speaker 4: rooms had the sound up. I don't think everything would
- 9:25Speaker 4: be on purpose.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Nick and I had an audition for Wicked. Nick and
- 9:30Speaker 2: I both auditioned for a part in the movie.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Didn't get it.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah, didn't get that one. But I think what got
- 9:36Speaker 3: me was hearing.
- 9:36Speaker 7: That's okay.
- 9:36Speaker 4: It didn't do well.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Nah.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Too bad. I could hear the guy auditioning, and I
- 9:42Speaker 3: was like, oh, okay. So he's singing three octaves higher
- 9:45Speaker 3: than I planned.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Okay.
- 9:46Speaker 3: And he sounds really, really good.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Perfect. Okay. No problem.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And then he walks out, and he's like, oh, hey, man.
- 9:52Speaker 3: And you know, they're waving back. They're like, all right.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And they're clapping. You're just like, oh, great.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Here we go. That's the worst when you're auditioning to
- 9:58Speaker 4: anything and you see the person in front of you
- 10:01Speaker 4: come out of the room and they're all like, oh,
- 10:02Speaker 4: my God, that was amazing. You know, and you're like,
- 10:06Speaker 4: sing it again.
- 10:07Speaker 5: So you were doing Second City before this.
- 10:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 3: It was Second City, L.A.
- 10:11Speaker 4: So it wasn't like in Chicago or, you know, that's like.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Still, you're doing it.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Were you auditioning a ton in L.A. before you got
- 10:18Speaker 5: to audition for SNL?
- 10:20Speaker 4: No, I was trying to be a filmmaker. Acting wasn't
- 10:24Speaker 4: even a thing. I did Second City because a friend
- 10:28Speaker 4: of mine, I went and saw his Level 5 show.
- 10:31Speaker 4: This guy, Eric Falkowski, I went and saw his Level
- 10:34Speaker 4: 5 is Your Final Show. And I was like, wow,
- 10:36Speaker 4: there's people my age doing comedy. I didn't even cross
- 10:40Speaker 4: my mind to do improv or sketch comedy. And so
- 10:44Speaker 4: I've been living in L.A. for, at that point, six years.
- 10:50Speaker 4: I hadn't really done anything creative. Like I was trying
- 10:53Speaker 4: to write these movies and things like that, but I
- 10:55Speaker 4: was trying to make a living. So I was PA-ing
- 10:58Speaker 4: on movies and I was an assistant editor and then
- 11:01Speaker 4: a post PA. And I was just kind of like,
- 11:04Speaker 4: not really like, oh man, I got to make something.
- 11:06Speaker 4: So I was like, well, if I take these classes
- 11:08Speaker 4: and it's like, okay, once a week I'm doing something
- 11:10Speaker 4: creative and, and then I'll meet people. Maybe that can
- 11:13Speaker 4: be in my short films. You know, that's how I
- 11:16Speaker 4: thought it would go. Right. And then when Megan Mullally
- 11:20Speaker 4: saw me in the, I got, I met Lauren and
- 11:23Speaker 4: then I got, you know, Naomi Odenkirk became my manager.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Then I, I went and did that, uh, what do
- 11:30Speaker 4: you call it? Uh, pilot season. And I read for, uh,
- 11:35Speaker 4: what did I read for? And I bombed everything. Oh,
- 11:37Speaker 4: I read for how I met your mother pilot. I
- 11:39Speaker 4: bombed that. I read for new adventures of old Christine,
- 11:43Speaker 4: bomb that hard.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Um, Did you know immediately that you bonded or you
- 11:47Speaker 2: just felt it after?
- 11:49Speaker 4: That one I think they told me I bonded. They
- 11:51Speaker 4: were like, okay. Oh, no.
- 11:53Speaker 3: You're not going to get this role.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I forget which one, but one of them I think said,
- 11:57Speaker 4: you know this is a comedy, right?
- 11:59Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I made a terrible mistake. A morning show in the audition,
- 12:05Speaker 3: they were like, all right, and you can read off
- 12:07Speaker 3: the sides if you like. I'm like, no, I got it.
- 12:10Speaker 7: Oh, no.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Never do that.
- 12:11Speaker 4: You read for those? I mean, you know a lot
- 12:14Speaker 4: of people won't read. I know.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I'm very grateful.
- 12:17Speaker 4: That's nice.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Lesson learned. Just if they offer sides, you hold those
- 12:21Speaker 3: damn sides.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Hold your sides.
- 12:23Speaker 3: So how soon after SNL did Barry come about? And
- 12:28Speaker 3: was that something that you were cooking up while you
- 12:29Speaker 3: were doing the show?
- 12:31Speaker 4: No, I was trying to write movies. And I had
- 12:33Speaker 4: written a movie for Jed Apatow that didn't really work.
- 12:36Speaker 4: And I wrote something for Scott Rudin, and that didn't
- 12:38Speaker 4: really work. And I was just... I very quickly was like,
- 12:44Speaker 4: if I could learn, you know, I need to learn
- 12:46Speaker 4: to write. So that's why I went and worked at
- 12:49Speaker 4: like South Park and I did stuff at Pixar a
- 12:52Speaker 4: little bit just to see like how things can be written.
- 12:58Speaker 4: And then after I'd done the movie Trainwreck, I had
- 13:01Speaker 4: a meeting at HBO and they said, we would really
- 13:05Speaker 4: like to work with you, but not like what you
- 13:08Speaker 4: did on SNL. You know, they'd seen a film I
- 13:11Speaker 4: was in called Skeleton Twins. And they were like, we
- 13:13Speaker 4: really liked your work in Skeleton Twins. We think something
- 13:16Speaker 4: more like that as opposed to like sketch.
- 13:20Speaker 3: And I was like, all.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Right, I wasn't expecting that. And then they were saying,
- 13:27Speaker 4: you know, there's this guy, Alec Berg, who just, he
- 13:31Speaker 4: has a show, Silicon Valley, which is about to come out.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Love that show.
- 13:35Speaker 4: I was like, all right. So I met him. And
- 13:39Speaker 4: then I saw Silicon Valley like, wow, this is great.
- 13:41Speaker 4: And then he and I met and just started talking
- 13:45Speaker 4: about ideas. And we had one idea that we tried
- 13:48Speaker 4: to write for a couple of months and it just
- 13:50Speaker 4: wasn't working. And then almost in frustration, one day we
- 13:54Speaker 4: were at this S & W diner in Culver City
- 13:58Speaker 4: and we were sitting there and we were frustrated. And
- 14:01Speaker 4: I said, well, what if I was like a hit man?
- 14:04Speaker 4: But like, you know, it's me. you know, just like
- 14:07Speaker 4: me being myself, but I'm a hit man. And then
- 14:12Speaker 4: quickly somehow the idea of him being in an acting class,
- 14:16Speaker 4: like we still, we were talking about this the other day.
- 14:19Speaker 4: We still have no idea where acting class came from,
- 14:21Speaker 4: but we were like, Oh, he should be in an
- 14:22Speaker 4: acting class. I don't know if it's similar with songwriting
- 14:25Speaker 4: or what you guys do. We're just, there's some things
- 14:27Speaker 4: that just doesn't work. It doesn't work. It doesn't work.
- 14:29Speaker 4: And then suddenly you come up with an idea and
- 14:31Speaker 4: then it, it's like a tree. It just starts to
- 14:34Speaker 4: grow in the right direction. You're like, Oh, OK, so
- 14:38Speaker 4: he lives in darkness, but he wants to live in
- 14:40Speaker 4: a spotlight like he has to like those two things
- 14:43Speaker 4: don't go together, you know. And that's like, oh, what
- 14:46Speaker 4: if he meets these people? And then he's like getting into,
- 14:48Speaker 4: you know, it's like therapy for him. He's like understanding
- 14:52Speaker 4: why he does these things. And, you know, and but
- 14:54Speaker 4: he's getting it through this acting class. And and we
- 14:59Speaker 4: are really excited. It was that feeling, you know, we
- 15:01Speaker 4: were like, OK, this is this is a thing.
- 15:04Speaker 3: It definitely was a thing.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And yeah, I think songwriting is very similar to that,
- 15:07Speaker 2: at least for myself and our experience. Like I'll see
- 15:10Speaker 2: an idea start with, I don't know, a melody over
- 15:13Speaker 2: here with Joe and then a lyric with Nick. And
- 15:16Speaker 2: then it translates to be something completely different once someone
- 15:20Speaker 2: else collaborates as well. It's just really cool to see
- 15:22Speaker 2: how creativity can be like its own, like you said,
- 15:25Speaker 2: tree with so many different branches.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Yeah, just sometimes you plant a thing and it grows
- 15:29Speaker 4: like sideways. It just kind of dies. Or it goes
- 15:32Speaker 4: up and it goes right back into the ground and
- 15:34Speaker 4: you're like, okay, that's not going to work. Yeah, that's
- 15:36Speaker 4: the best feeling, you know, when you're like, oh man,
- 15:41Speaker 4: none of these things have worked and you just have
- 15:43Speaker 4: to keep doing it and suddenly something clicks.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Well, something that definitely worked in my household with you
- 15:49Speaker 2: is Cloudy with a Chance.
- 15:50Speaker 3: It is one of our favorite films ever. It's one
- 15:54Speaker 3: of my favorite films, and I always wanted to go
- 15:57Speaker 3: to a restaurant that made certain items like that from
- 16:01Speaker 3: the movie.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Oh, huge. It's huge. Yeah. I'm sure you could find
- 16:06Speaker 4: a place like that. You guys should open that up.
- 16:08Speaker 3: There you go. See, this is the tree growing. This
- 16:10Speaker 3: is the tree. It's starting to grow.
- 16:11Speaker 4: It's starting to grow. Exactly.
- 16:14Speaker 2: The ice cream scene where they were like, where he
- 16:16Speaker 2: gets like, pretends like he got like shot with the
- 16:18Speaker 2: ice cream is like the funniest thing.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Such a good movie. It's so well done.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Your voice is perfect. And you know, your voice work.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Do you enjoy doing voice work?
- 16:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I do. I mean, I think I say this
- 16:29Speaker 4: a lot, but I think the thing that people don't
- 16:31Speaker 4: assume is that it's really easy and you kind of
- 16:33Speaker 4: just waltz in and you do it but it's i'm
- 16:35Speaker 4: so exhausted after i do it dude it's physical right
- 16:38Speaker 4: you're it's yeah you guys have done stuff like that
- 16:40Speaker 4: it's like it's it's really you're just like.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Yeah afterwards you're like i'm i'm just like where are
- 16:45Speaker 3: we going for dinner nowhere i'm gonna get fried i'm
- 16:47Speaker 3: like my bed.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Like don't you just roll out of bed in your
- 16:50Speaker 4: pajamas and you just do it i'm like no man
- 16:52Speaker 4: i have to like go take a nap i like
- 16:54Speaker 4: i'm like because you're screaming for.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Four hours And then they always make you do like
- 16:59Speaker 3: an hour or two of, it's called efforts for those
- 17:02Speaker 3: that don't know.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Yes.
- 17:03Speaker 3: And that's the hardest part. What's an effort? I haven't been.
- 17:06Speaker 3: It's just. Please give me your best efforts. Well, there's
- 17:12Speaker 3: some really awkward ones too. Like, you know, obviously not
- 17:14Speaker 3: in the animated stuff. There's not going to be, but
- 17:16Speaker 3: when you're, you know, and you're doing ADR.
- 17:17Speaker 4: ADR.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Sometimes there'll be like an intimate scene.
- 17:20Speaker 5: You have to be doing the efforts or, you know.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:25Speaker 3: It's really strange.
- 17:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:26Speaker 3: But there's a great video there's a great video of
- 17:28Speaker 3: hugh jackman doing the efforts for wolverine for logan it's
- 17:32Speaker 3: so intense it's it's yeah it's inspiring and i think
- 17:35Speaker 3: that was probably one of the first videos we saw
- 17:38Speaker 3: we're like oh yeah like he it's like people like
- 17:41Speaker 3: oh it's so funny he's like pretending to do it
- 17:42Speaker 3: it's like.
- 17:43Speaker 4: What do you expect yeah no you have to i
- 17:46Speaker 4: have a video we did an episode of barry where
- 17:49Speaker 4: i'm there is this little karate girl episode running Lily
- 17:54Speaker 4: that where there's this big fight scene. It's like the
- 17:56Speaker 4: whole episode is a fight scene. And this guy, Daniel,
- 17:59Speaker 4: who's like one of the, he kind of looks like,
- 18:01Speaker 4: I think he might've doubled Hugh Jackman. He looks a
- 18:03Speaker 4: lot like Hugh Jackman.
- 18:04Speaker 3: He's a huge jacked man.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Huge jacked man. He's actually a lot of the agents
- 18:10Speaker 4: in the matrix. That's like, a lot of those are
- 18:13Speaker 4: him with like some, like he's this insane, he's unbelievable. Wow. And, uh,
- 18:19Speaker 4: I have a video of him watching a fight, like,
- 18:22Speaker 4: a fight scene like that, the Hugh Jackman one where
- 18:25Speaker 4: he's just doing all the efforts. And, yeah, it is. Like,
- 18:28Speaker 4: he's giving 100%. By the end of it, he was, like,
- 18:31Speaker 4: just drenched in sweat. I mean, it was wild. It's awesome.
- 18:35Speaker 4: But the weird thing about the efforts, too, is, like,
- 18:37Speaker 4: sometimes we'll be like, all right, kicked in the stomach.
- 18:40Speaker 4: You go, ugh. And it's like, kicked in the stomach
- 18:42Speaker 4: by a horse.
- 18:44Speaker 7: Ugh.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Kicked in the stomach by a robot.
- 18:48Speaker 3: It's all the same, but just the same kicking.
- 18:50Speaker 4: It's all the same thing. And I'm like, can you
- 18:53Speaker 4: go back to horse again? Just do that one more time. Oh, okay.
- 18:55Speaker 4: That was good. All right. We like that.
- 18:57Speaker 2: What kind of efforts did you have to do for
- 18:59Speaker 2: Cat in the Hat? Let's talk about that for a minute.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Very excited about this.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Yeah, so excited.
- 19:04Speaker 5: I'm a longtime Dr. Seuss fan, lifelong Dr. Seuss fan.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Cat in the Hat, obviously one of the greatest of
- 19:11Speaker 3: all time. And by the way, not your first time. Yeah,
- 19:14Speaker 3: something with Cat in the Hat. In 2014, we played
- 19:16Speaker 3: a very different version of Cat in the Hat. We
- 19:19Speaker 3: played a naughty Cat. We'll play the clip now.
- 19:20Speaker 4: You want to see me dance? Great dance.
- 19:25Speaker 3: She gets it from you.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Wait a second.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Is she my daughter?
- 19:34Speaker 3: It's a little different.
- 19:36Speaker 4: That was a little different. That was a hard one
- 19:37Speaker 4: to explain.
- 19:38Speaker 8: To the kids.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Is it similar to Barry where they're like, we like
- 19:40Speaker 3: what you did there, but we want it to be different.
- 19:46Speaker 4: You think this is going to be like cloudy, but
- 19:48Speaker 4: we want you to do is you did this snl
- 19:50Speaker 4: sketch we want this to be like a naughty.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Cat what's that been like for you and you know
- 19:56Speaker 3: are you a lifelong fan are you excited to be
- 19:59Speaker 3: to be like bringing this into a whole new universe.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Yeah i mean it's where you learn how to read
- 20:04Speaker 4: you know as a kid i mean those were the
- 20:06Speaker 4: first books that you were given were dr seuss yeah
- 20:10Speaker 4: We all have that. And then having those read to
- 20:13Speaker 4: me and then reading them to my kids.
- 20:15Speaker 3: A fellow girl dad.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Yeah, three girls. How many do you have, girls?
- 20:21Speaker 3: I've got two. I've got one. We're deep in the
- 20:25Speaker 3: throes of Cat in the Hat right now, too. Our
- 20:27Speaker 3: daughter's four and a half. She's really getting into Dr.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Seuss. Awesome. How old are the rest of your guys' daughters?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Almost 13 and 10. Six and four.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Yeah, man. The teenagers. Get ready, guys. It's fun.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I'm already starting to see it.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I got a 17 and 14-year-old. Oh, wow. And an 11-year-old. Awesome.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Congrats to you.
- 20:49Speaker 4: They're great, but it's, you know.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's real.
- 20:51Speaker 4: It gets intense. It's real. But they're awesome. And they
- 20:55Speaker 4: still love Dr.
- 20:56Speaker 7: Seuss.
- 20:56Speaker 4: They're all three really excited for the movie. So pumped.
- 20:59Speaker 4: And it's genuinely really funny. I know it's like, okay,
- 21:02Speaker 4: you have to go out there and you have to
- 21:03Speaker 4: sell a movie, but it's I mean, you guys, you
- 21:07Speaker 4: have to go on and do a press tour and
- 21:08Speaker 4: you're kind of like, it's good. Yeah, it's good. It's
- 21:10Speaker 4: for the family. This one, it's actually really good. It's
- 21:16Speaker 4: so good.
- 21:16Speaker 3: It's the best feeling.
- 21:17Speaker 4: In the world. I really am proud of it. I
- 21:21Speaker 4: took my 11-year-old to see a screening and she brought
- 21:23Speaker 4: a bunch of friends. And we were all just dying laughing.
- 21:27Speaker 4: It's very funny.
- 21:28Speaker 3: It's such a relief, isn't it? When you go to
- 21:31Speaker 3: the first screening and you watch it and you go, oh,
- 21:33Speaker 3: it's nuts. terrible it's good it's like the best feeling.
- 21:36Speaker 2: We did a christmas film last year and nick watched
- 21:38Speaker 2: it much earlier than i did and he's like it's
- 21:40Speaker 2: great and i'm like i just wouldn't watch it like
- 21:42Speaker 2: for a long time i just could not break i
- 21:44Speaker 2: was like there's no chance.
- 21:46Speaker 3: It's gonna be good no it's actually good we're like
- 21:48Speaker 3: uh yeah uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh i'm sure it is and
- 21:51Speaker 3: so we finally watched it well we can't wait it's
- 21:53Speaker 3: gonna be so fun i mean literally even in the
- 21:56Speaker 3: trailer there's a fart joke in any movie that has
- 21:58Speaker 3: fart jokes in the trailer.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Yeah i mean it goes hard i.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Think the quote is You've gone too far. Did you
- 22:04Speaker 3: say too fart? Too fart?
- 22:06Speaker 4: Yes.
- 22:07Speaker 3: So good. Classic.
- 22:09Speaker 4: No, it's very classy stuff like that.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Now, there's obviously been some iconic.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Fellow actor friends of yours and people that we just
- 22:19Speaker 2: adore that have played Cat in the Hat. Did you
- 22:22Speaker 2: do any chats with some cats beforehand?
- 22:25Speaker 4: Did they meet Mike Myers about it? Yes. weird like
- 22:29Speaker 4: a connection that Alec Berg was one of the writers
- 22:32Speaker 4: on that the Michael Mike Myers movie oh cool wow
- 22:35Speaker 4: yeah so I asked him about it he's like I
- 22:38Speaker 4: don't remember much it's different from that I mean I
- 22:42Speaker 4: actually haven't seen it so I should see it but
- 22:47Speaker 4: I remember it my kids saw it and they were
- 22:49Speaker 4: like it's wild.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Well we do this thing where we answer voicemail questions
- 22:54Speaker 3: on our podcast that we have no credentials for and
- 22:58Speaker 3: We have a couple voicemails we'd love to do with
- 23:00Speaker 3: you if you don't mind.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Oh, great.
- 23:04Speaker 3: It's voicemail time. Voicemails are presented by Hyundai. Make everyday
- 23:07Speaker 3: epic in the Hyundai Palisade hybrid. FYI, guys, every time
- 23:11Speaker 3: you leave a voicemail, you are automatically entered to win
- 23:14Speaker 3: a trip to Los Angeles to see our show at
- 23:16Speaker 3: the Hollywood Bowl. How cool is that?
- 23:17Speaker 4: Wow, yes.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Thanks to Hyundai. We will fly you in hotel and
- 23:21Speaker 3: box seats for our show at the Hollywood Bowl. It's
- 23:24Speaker 3: the Burn It Up Tour all over again. Let's do it.
- 23:28Speaker 3: This one's from Julie.
- 23:29Speaker 7: Hi, my name is Julie. I'm from Texas. And one
- 23:33Speaker 7: thing I just have always wondered is like when you shower,
- 23:39Speaker 7: do you physically like wash your feet?
- 23:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:44Speaker 7: Because I feel like when I have this icebreaker question,
- 23:48Speaker 7: when I'm like meeting groups of people and. I learn
- 23:50Speaker 7: a lot about the person right away because if a
- 23:53Speaker 7: person tells me, no, I'm in the shower, I just
- 23:56Speaker 7: let the soapy water trickle down my legs and it
- 23:59Speaker 7: washes my feet.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Huh?
- 24:03Speaker 7: You don't physically take either a washcloth or your loofah
- 24:07Speaker 7: and like physically scrub your feet. What about the crusty
- 24:11Speaker 7: crust in between your toes? So please, I need to
- 24:14Speaker 7: know where y'all stand. Are you a Water, soapy water
- 24:19Speaker 7: trickles down your legs and it cleans your feet? Or
- 24:23Speaker 7: do you physically scrub in between your toes?
- 24:25Speaker 4: And she asked this to like groups of people.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Thank you, Julie, for your question. That's actually.
- 24:30Speaker 5: It is.
- 24:31Speaker 3: A break the ice question.
- 24:32Speaker 4: It is a break the ice question. That's a pretty
- 24:34Speaker 4: good question. What do you think?
- 24:35Speaker 3: And also, I guess if you feel comfortable answering.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think it depends on how, you know,
- 24:43Speaker 4: how much time I have, you know, because you are
- 24:45Speaker 4: getting a lot of soapy water on the feet. But
- 24:47Speaker 4: then sometimes, see, the problem is I've had a thing
- 24:51Speaker 4: where I'm like, okay, I got like something is on
- 24:53Speaker 4: my feet and I have to wash it. And then
- 24:55Speaker 4: your feet are really slippery when you walk out of
- 24:57Speaker 4: the shower. That's true. That's another thing. Dangerous. But no,
- 25:02Speaker 4: I don't really, I don't really think, I don't really
- 25:03Speaker 4: wash my feet. I just let. You're standing in soapy water.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Let gravity do its thing. I let soapy water dribble
- 25:09Speaker 3: down to my feet.
- 25:11Speaker 5: You know what I do, since you asked, Julie?
- 25:16Speaker 3: I sort of like do this.
- 25:18Speaker 5: I lift one foot up, and I give it a
- 25:19Speaker 5: quick wipe off. Yeah, but I'm standing, but I sort
- 25:23Speaker 5: of do the tree pose.
- 25:24Speaker 4: And then do you really have to dry your feet, though,
- 25:27Speaker 4: when you walk out, right?
- 25:28Speaker 3: I have a mat that absorbs a lot of the moisture.
- 25:31Speaker 5: It takes the slippery.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Are you putting soap on it?
- 25:33Speaker 7: No.
- 25:34Speaker 5: No, it's sort of just the soap from, it's the
- 25:37Speaker 5: soap that's there.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Residual soap.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Right, right, right, right.
- 25:39Speaker 5: I'm not like adding fresh soap.
- 25:42Speaker 4: You put the soap on it, it's when they slick.
- 25:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:44Speaker 5: It's dangerous.
- 25:45Speaker 3: I would say, Julie, maybe don't go with this as
- 25:47Speaker 3: your first leading question on a group.
- 25:49Speaker 4: I would say something like, where are you guys from?
- 25:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:51Speaker 4: That's a good opening iceberg.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Or this next question from Milo. We got our little homies,
- 25:57Speaker 3: five years old. Milo is calling in.
- 26:00Speaker 7: Hi, my name is Milo.
- 26:02Speaker 4: I'm five. Uh, who are your heroes?
- 26:06Speaker 3: Who are your heroes? Thank you, Milo. Great question. Phil,
- 26:09Speaker 3: who's your hero? Heroes.
- 26:13Speaker 4: Pete Rose.
- 26:14Speaker 5: Pete Rose.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Did you say Pete Rose?
- 26:17Speaker 4: Or heroes?
- 26:18Speaker 7: Heroes.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I thought you said Pete Rose. That's fantastic.
- 26:23Speaker 5: That's the best answer.
- 26:23Speaker 4: You could give me. Who's your hero?
- 26:25Speaker 3: Pete Rose?
- 26:25Speaker 4: Yeah, actually it is. That's crazy.
- 26:28Speaker 3: How'd you know?
- 26:28Speaker 4: Ugh. I don't know. I have a lot of heroes.
- 26:30Speaker 4: I mean, it's like filmmaker heroes. I mean, you know,
- 26:34Speaker 4: I have the usual, you know, Scorsese and Kurosawa and
- 26:38Speaker 4: people like that. And then a hero in life. I mean,
- 26:41Speaker 4: my dad, pretty great guy.
- 26:44Speaker 7: Great.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Yeah. Great answer.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Gentlemen.
- 26:47Speaker 5: Pete Rose, obviously.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Pete Rose.
- 26:50Speaker 6: Shout out.
- 26:51Speaker 5: Shout out. Pete Rose, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey. Just the
- 26:56Speaker 5: obvious ones.
- 26:59Speaker 3: I mean, our dad, our dad too, for sure. You know,
- 27:03Speaker 3: I think people that work in the healthcare space, pretty amazing,
- 27:07Speaker 3: especially ICU, NICU, pretty, they're like angels to me.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 27:12Speaker 3: You want to follow, Kevin? Kevin, you want to follow
- 27:14Speaker 3: after Nick on that one?
- 27:15Speaker 5: Mic drop.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Thanks, Nick.
- 27:18Speaker 3: I second your answer.
- 27:21Speaker 4: You're like the icy view in our first responders, and
- 27:23Speaker 4: you're like, I like Usher.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Okay, we have time for one more voicemail. Yeah. Okay,
- 27:32Speaker 3: this is from Anonymous.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Hey, guys.
- 27:35Speaker 6: I just listened to your most recent podcast, and I
- 27:39Speaker 6: just wanted to let Kevin know that I am also
- 27:42Speaker 6: a firm banana hater. I've always hated bananas.
- 27:46Speaker 4: I don't know what it is.
- 27:47Speaker 3: It's the texture.
- 27:48Speaker 7: It's the taste.
- 27:49Speaker 6: It's the smell. It's all of it. And so I
- 27:53Speaker 6: just really wanted to stand in solidarity with Kevin and
- 27:55Speaker 6: just let you know that you are not the only
- 27:59Speaker 6: banana hater.
- 27:59Speaker 4: Love you guys. Big banana.
- 28:02Speaker 2: The big banana mob is going to come after you, Kev.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I'm coming up against big banana right now. Kevin would
- 28:07Speaker 2: go with that he's allergic to bananas for years. So
- 28:09Speaker 2: that it wouldn't show up in my food. Most recently,
- 28:11Speaker 2: he just says, he's like, I just don't like them.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:14Speaker 3: I stopped lying to the general public, essentially. Bill, correct
- 28:17Speaker 3: me if I'm wrong, because we have a lot of
- 28:19Speaker 3: peanut allergy. We're a peanut-free band.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Because we have a lot of peanuts in our vicinity.
- 28:25Speaker 3: But you have a peanut allergy, correct?
- 28:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 4: And you voice Mr. Peanut?
- 28:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:30Speaker 4: I was the voice of Mr. Peanut.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Insane.
- 28:32Speaker 4: I told that I was allergic to it on a
- 28:35Speaker 4: Howard Stern, live Howard Stern broadcast. And he was like,
- 28:39Speaker 4: so you're the voice of Mr. Peanut and you're allergic
- 28:41Speaker 4: to peanuts, right? And I go, yeah. And I don't
- 28:44Speaker 4: know if the Mr. Peanut, if the Planners Peanut people
- 28:47Speaker 4: knew that. The minute I said that, my phone just
- 28:51Speaker 4: started going. And in my head, I was like. I
- 28:56Speaker 4: bet I wasn't supposed to say that.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Somewhere in the fine print, we'll not disclose you have
- 29:01Speaker 3: a peanut allergy. That seems like something they should.
- 29:04Speaker 5: Ask the person they hire to voice Mr. Peanut before.
- 29:07Speaker 5: One last thing.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Do you have any allergies we should know about?
- 29:12Speaker 4: No, but they were cool. They were like, well, we
- 29:14Speaker 4: don't care.
- 29:16Speaker 3: We just called to tell you we don't care. Bill,
- 29:18Speaker 3: thank you so much for being on our podcast, and congrats.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Thanks for taking the time to talk to me, guys.
- 29:23Speaker 3: We are so pumped. We are so hyped for you, man,
- 29:25Speaker 3: and we hope to see you soon.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, guys. Thank you.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Thank you so much. Bill Hader, love that guy. What
- 29:31Speaker 3: an incredible interview. I love that guy.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Such a good vibe, such a gem, and so knowledgeable.
- 29:37Speaker 7: On it.
- 29:37Speaker 5: I love how he casually dropped.
- 29:38Speaker 3: He's like, then I want to work with Pixar. Pixar
- 29:41Speaker 3: and South Park. He's like, and just to figure out
- 29:44Speaker 3: how it's done.
- 29:46Speaker 4: I'm like.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Wow, that's a pretty sick thing. We never asked him, actually.
- 29:51Speaker 3: He could have been helpful. Or Cat in the Hat
- 29:53Speaker 3: could have been helpful. With his three daughters. Our sibling dynamic. Family... Well, really.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Group chat etiquette. If you think that Joe is full
- 30:05Speaker 3: of shit and that this take is dumb.
- 30:09Speaker 5: Because you actually spend time with your sibling and respond
- 30:11Speaker 5: in real life.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Or if you back me up. If you think I'm
- 30:13Speaker 3: in the right, that it deserves more than a like
- 30:14Speaker 3: or an exclamation point, or am I just getting too old?
- 30:17Speaker 5: I think you're being very needy.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I'm sorry I have needs. Pick me.
- 30:23Speaker 5: If you agree or disagree, please call us at this hotline.
